By the time you read this it will have been the Bank Holiday weekend of celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, and hopefully amongst the celebrations the sun decided to pop out from behind the clouds.
But as we all know the Great British summertime has a mind of its own, which is why it’s so popular when the sun is shining that we all love to spend as much time as we can outdoors. For most of us our gardens have now become an extension of our homes and how they’re styled is just as important as our inside interior. We’ve put together some of our favourite garden furniture pieces (page 37) to ensure your garden is a stylish sanctuary to enjoy this summertime.

To me summer ready, also means updating my wardrobe with a few pieces I know will see me through the summer and beyond, page 21 gives you lots of inspiration for your summer wardrobe.

HORMONES AND MENTAL HEALTH Did you know hormones and mental health are linked? Hormones greatly influence our emotions and behaviours and having a better understanding of this can help us improve emotional wellbeing. What Happens To Your Emotions When You Have A Hormonal Imbalance? Let’s look at the sex hormones and their role in emotional wellbeing.
When there is no presence of a hormonal imbalance, estrogen promotes the activity of serotonin and dopamine in the brain, which encourages emotions of happiness and motivation. The presence of testosterone in the body at optimal levels also helps to promote dopamine activity.
Meanwhile, progesterone has a close relationship with the neurotransmitters GABA (which, when balanced, promotes feelings of calmness and contentment) and glutamate (which helps maintain mental alertness and contentment). Imbalances of these hormones contribute to the dysregulation of neurotransmitters, which in turn play havoc with our emotions, leaving us feeling low, demotivated, anxious, and other negative sensations. It may also lead to certain behaviours as a result, such as becoming inactive, avoiding interactions with others, snacking and consuming higher levels of alcohol. If you have a hormone-related condition and have experienced a change in your emotional wellbeing, a hormonal imbalance could be the reason why.
Dr Asha Chhaya, hormone expert at The Marion Gluck Clinic explains, “When my patients experience emotional and psychological symptoms due to a hormonal imbalance, I always advocate making simple changes first. What I mean by this is that we must look at our basic needs and if they are being not just met, but optimised, in our lifestyle. These needs include hydration, exercise, diet and stress management. It’s important to take stock of the last two months and assess whether these needs have been met, and if not, try to meet them going forward, rather than jumping straight to medications and treatments that may not be necessary if your wellbeing needs are fulfilled in the first place.” How To Improve Your Hormone Balance For Better Emotional Wellbeing Making healthy choices in your lifestyle can help you
balance your hormones. These include: • Practising mindfulness • Reducing stress • Improving sleep hygiene • Engaging in regular exercise, especially resistance training • Eating a nutritionally balanced diet and reducing sugar consumption • Reducing alcohol intake
Some people who experience negative emotions and low mood, especially during periods of hormonal imbalance, may try to numb these feelings with alcohol. However, the problem with this is that alcohol is metabolised by the liver, but the liver is also metabolising hormones, and when it’s busy metabolising alcohol, hormones cannot be metabolised as efficiently. That can lead to further imbalance. Even though some people might say alcohol helps them with their sleep, it probably isn’t giving them the nourishing sleep that they need, and they find that they are tired the following day, and this causes greater impact to their emotional wellbeing. Dr Chhaya explains: “Prioritising sleep is important. Even just one night of poor sleep can impact your emotions the next day. Unfortunately, many perimenopausal women struggle with getting a good night’s sleep. Along with implementing good sleep hygiene, there is one supplement I recommend for easing sleep problems, which is magnesium glycinate. This is one of the best forms of magnesium to prepare the body for sleep.”
Can BHRT Improve Emotional Wellbeing? Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) helps to regulate hormones, and should be used alongside positive lifestyle changes that are also associated with hormone rebalancing, such as improving nutrition, increasing exercise and reducing stress.
When used in this way, BHRT can contribute to an improvement in mood in those with hormone-related disorders. One study found that even a low dose of BHRT improved emotional lability (mood swings) by 25%, and decreased irritability and anxiety by 25% and 22% respectively.
If you are testosterone deficient and are experiencing negative emotions as a result, BHRT can be used to address this specific deficiency in a dosage and delivery method that causes little to no disruption to the regulation of other hormones.

Hair and Beauty Spectacular
Businesses of Bedford rallied to make the return of the Bedford College Hair & Beauty Show a success.
The catwalk event at the Corn Exchange, a highlight of the social calendar in town, had been sadly missed for two years due to lockdowns and restrictions. It came back with a bang on Thursday 26th May with the anticipated fantastic fashions.
Hair and Beauty students from the Brooks High Street training salon, which is part of The Bedford College Group, prepared a range of outstanding styles.
The event was sponsored by Love Bedford, which represents 600+ businesses in the town centre. The BedfordBID organisation gave £500 worth of Love Bedford shopping vouchers as prizes. BedfordBID also arranged for professional filming of the big day - which will be shown across various channels in the coming months. In addition goodie bags were donated by Body Shop in Silver Street and the finale was a fantastic £150 voucher from Bakers Brothers of St Peter’s Street.
Said Gemma Jones from Brooks: “This has been an enormous journey for many of our students and to be part of this event is a highlight of training. We are very grateful for the backing we have received from Love Bedford and businesses.”
Sam Laycock, Chair of the BedfordBID said: “Hair and beauty are two services which cannot be accessed over the internet, these businesses, represented here by their young apprentices and by the trainees of the future, are at the heart of the town centre of Bedford.” For more fantastic events in town www.lovebedford.co.uk

MENOPAUSE The Six Most Common Questions With nearly half of women (46%) around the globe unaware of perimenopause1, many women take to search engines for more information on menopause and how it affects their mind and body. But what are the most common questions asked regarding menopause? We spoke to the experts at Stella (www.onstella.com) an app for menopause relief, who have utilised their internal experts and doctors to help answer them.
What are the symptoms of menopause? Perhaps unsurprisingly, the thing people want to know most about menopause is what the symptoms are over 534,000 people searched for answers to this question in the past year. There are 34 symptoms of menopause and every woman’s experience of menopause is different. Some experience many of these symptoms, while some will only experience a few. The most common symptoms of menopause are: • Vasomotor: hot flushes, night sweats, chills, heart palpitations
• Psychological: mood swings, depression, panic attacks, anger, anxiety, low confidence • Somatic (physical): headaches, joint pain, sleep issues, weight gain. • Urogenital (sex and pelvic floor): painful sex, low libido, vaginal discomfort, urinary incontinence
What are the early symptoms of menopause? Over 25,000 people have been searching for information about the early symptoms of menopause in the past 12 months. Menopause is when a woman hasn’t had a period for a year and isn’t on hormonal contraception. The time leading up to it is called perimenopause and this is when menopausal symptoms first appear for many women. But what are the first signs that your body may be experiencing menopause symptoms? The most common symptoms include increased anxiety, unexplained mood swings, low libido, erratic periods, restless sleep, weight gain and hot flushes.
How long does menopause last? Many are going online to see how long their menopause symptoms may last. In fact, there have been nearly 20,000 searches for this topic in the past year alone. Perimenopause tends to last for an average of 10 years and symptoms can appear during this time, but it differs for each person. It’s also important to note that menopausal symptoms can last well into postmenopause, so can be longer for many.
How does menopause affect sleep? Disturbed sleep is one of the most common menopause symptoms, and 2,260 people have been wondering how menopause affects sleep in the last 12 months. The majority of women will experience sleep issues. The reason for this is fluctuating hormone levels which make it harder to fall and stay asleep. Paired with night sweats, it can be hard for women to get a restful night’s sleep. It’s important to know that it is temporary and the quality of sleep for most women will improve postmenopause.
What happens during menopause? Even if you may know the symptoms, nearly 2,000 people have been asking what actually happens during menopause - a 13% increase from this time last year. Menopause is defined as the time when a woman hasn’t had a period for a year and isn’t on hormonal contraception. It is a natural consequence of ageing that your ovaries stop producing eggs. During the menopause journey, your body produces less oestrogen and progesterone, which leads to menopausal symptoms. A surgical or medically induced menopause is when your ovaries are removed or if you take medication that stops your ovaries from working.
Does menopause cause weight gain? One of the most common asked questions was if menopause contributed to weight gain, with over 1,700 searches on the matter. On average, a woman will put on 5lbs during menopause, and notice this gain mostly around their middle. Your body produces fewer hormones during menopause, and lower oestrogen levels mean your body stores more fat and redistributes it differently – mainly around the stomach area. Muscle mass also decreases as we age, which is why many women put on weight as they age and during menopause. To help, try increasing your intake of non-starchy carbs, healthy fats, water, and herbal teas, and look for food high in protein and fibre. Commenting further, Andrea Berchowitz, Stella CEO and Co-founder, says: “Menopause can be a challenging time for many women and they often take to search engines to find relief and an understanding of what their bodies are going through. We wanted to see the most asked questions regarding menopause and help answer them, to show women that they’re not alone, and help is always at hand.”

Midlife Madness I’m the kind of person that likes to practice what I preach, well sometimes anyway, so I try to build in to my day things that will help me stay positive and grateful so I’m able to deal with the ups and downs of life. I regularly walk, my favourite place is in the woods – trees seem to have nailed serenity, and unless there have been some particularly irritating dogs – the kind who run up to me like I’m a long-lost mate and put muddy paws or drool all over my clothes, I usually come back with a greater sense of calmness and peace.
I’ve also built a bit of creativity into my routine, I play the guitar and sing a bit with hubby, he’s a really good guitar player, and again I enjoy it – neighbours haven’t complained yet but the cat strangely runs away!! I started to crochet again, I really enjoy that too but I’m not speedy. I started to make a cot blanket for a friend who had a baby but to be honest it’ll be a teenager by the time I’ve finished, not ideal but its not about the blanket it’s about me! For a while I struggled to fall asleep, like many others that’s when my brain seemed to think it would be good to sift through all the problems, real and imagined, considering how awful the outcomes might be. For a pretty positive person when it comes to night time I have a pretty negative brain.
I’d read that phones etc aren’t good for relaxing down into sleep so I tried listening to meditation tapes on my phone through headphones instead. They were really good till the video stops and some blaring advert jolts me out of my peaceful slumber with such vigour that I have to start all over again. A bit like Groundhog Day – but at night.
So, I decided to get back into the habit of reading at bedtime. I have pretty eclectic tastes usually but of late I feel myself drawn to the dark side of life, well of literature I suppose. I like a book that will have me turning the pages until my eyelids droop and what seems to do it for me are murderous detective stories. Now I need to say that I live with hubby who is usually curled up asleep beside me at this point. I must confess if I was sleeping alone it might not be my first choice of reading material. I am the person, who at 60 years of age (old enough to be sensible and rational) got out of bed at midnight in a hotel to check under the bed and in the wardrobe after watching Line of Duty! Anyway, I have strangely found that a diet of serial killers somehow sends me to sleep like a lullaby. These novels are not for the fainthearted with detailed descriptions of murder, dismemberment and decay and female protagonists (I just like female detectives) who are always going to the proverbial basement when there is a thunderstorm. Honestly, they never learn! The current FBI heroine has been almost drowned, almost strangulated and shot in the head in her relentless pursuit of evil men who maim and kill women! In my latest read there is a lot about how insects invade corpses and the number of blow flies can give an indication of when they deceased. Fascinating stuff but again not for the faint hearted. I’ve become much the same in my choice of TV shows to watch. I think my hubby worries that it is all extensive research, but honestly, he’s not THAT irritating. It’s definitely not for everyone but somehow it’s my wind down, the more gruesome the better – and I don’t even have nightmares. Who’d have thought it!

It’s All About Balance We’ve all heard about balance – something we try to achieve in various areas, work life balance for example but even in terms of a healthy diet it’s all about balance.
If we are honest we probably all know as well that there are things which ‘give’ us energy and things which deplete our energy so we need to bring some balance to our lives so that we don’t become exhausted or burnt out. So, let’s think about some of the things that ‘take’ our energy – some of them are unavoidable but in a minute, we’ll also look at things which can give us energy and we can achieve balance if we include some of both.
As with other areas of life we need the basics to be right, not getting enough sleep, exercise or nutritious food will have a negative impact on us. If we sit for too long or regularly skip meals that will reduce our energy too.
But apart from those physical aspects of life our emotional and social life can be energy giving or energy taking. Spending too much time on social media can be okay but for some it leads to feelings of inadequacy or dissatisfaction as the imagine everyone is having a much better more fulfilled life than they are. How we see ourselves can also drain our energy – if we have a very low self-esteem everything can feel like an uphill struggle. So, for some people limiting time on social media can help bring balance.
As with other areas of life our thoughts can also be the source of happiness or can drag us down. Training our selves to be positive and focus on the good can be immensely energy giving. It might not be easy at first but our thoughts have a huge impact on our wellbeing. Our mindsets and limiting beliefs can also drain our energy, if for example we are a people pleaser, always putting our needs last as we feel we need to please others, we will find energy disappears fast. You deserve to be able to care for yourself. You and your needs are as important as anyone else’s.
The company we keep can also be a huge drain on our energy obviously we can’t immediately abandon people that are dear to us (though we can set boundaries about the impact they have on us). If people you spend time with regularly
drain your energy then maybe it’s time to limit how much time you spend with them or somehow ensure you pass on to them your positivity rather than picking up their negativity.
In addition to things that drain our energy there are things that can give us energy. We all know what some of these are, getting enough sleep, exercise, water and nutritious food – these are good places to start. But time in nature can be energising, whether it’s a hike or a simple sit in the garden or visit to a park. Any creative endeavour will usually be something that gives us energy – its not about how good the creative product is it’s more about the process. Slowing down and spending time just being rather than doing is restorative too – whether it’s a few minutes of mindfulness, a meditation session or simply pausing in your day to be present, it will benefit you. Part of the benefit comes from the activity itself but part is also from the message you give to yourself when you decide to put yourself fist and prioritise your needs.
As humans we are wired to connect with others and while some may only need a small circle of friends and others may need more we all need some connections. That’s why lockdown was so tough for so many, as lots of those regular connections ceased – zoom is brilliant but not the same as a meet up in person. And lock down aside often what stops us connecting with mates as much as we’d like to or spending more time with family is busyness. Yet that social contact is one of the things that gives us positive energy so again it’s something to prioritise.
If you need to restore some balance to your life think about doing things that will give you energy each day, build them into your routine whether it’s exercise or training yourself to think positively and try to limit the things that will take your energy. Remove rosemary and thyme stems leaving behind any leaves that have fallen off. Squeeze the juice of 1 lemon and serve with crusty bread. Optional to garnish with fresh parsley. RECIPE: The Bare Bird

200g salted butter 200g granulated sugar 200g self raising flour 4 large eggs 4tbsp milk 1⁄2 tsp baking powder 300g raspberries 400ml double cream 50g meringue nests 1⁄2 vanilla pod 3tbsp raspberry jam 10 Guylian Belgian Chocolate Sea Shells

Fry’s Footie Corner Wow, what a finish to the Premier League campaign! I, like so many others, struggled to keep up with all the drama. While it is great that the scheduling means all of the games kick-off at the same time, for someone like me, who loves every aspect of the beautiful game, I found it difficult to pick a match to watch!
Last month, I had the pleasure of attending the LMA awards dinner in London and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was in attendance, alongside his coaching staff and players. Given the scheduling that they faced ahead of the Champions League, I thought that was wonderful that he was there and spending time speaking to everyone, including our manager Grant McCann.
I can understand why he was named Manager of the Year, Jurgen has pushed Manchester City all the way despite a smaller squad and whilst winning two domestic finals and getting to the final of the Champions League.
Pep will get all the accolades in terms of what he has achieved. Four title wins in five seasons is an extraordinary effort and despite a little wobble on the final day, they got the job done and their celebrations were great to see.
We are blessed in this country to have two top clubs slugging it out for the title and make no mistake, with Chelsea’s takeover, they will be pushing themselves next term. Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Manchester United
should strengthen too and Aston Villa join Newcastle United in the category of ‘having a right go’.
At the bottom, I was sad to see Burnley relegated on the final day. Sean Dyche did a wonderful job at that club and sometimes the grass is not always greener on the other side. I am sure they will be looking to bounce back at the first time of asking, but it will be difficult in a hugely competitive Championship which welcomed back Sunderland via the play-offs.
While from a revenue point of view, it is great for clubs like ourselves at Peterborough United to have them in League One, I think everyone recognises that they are a Championship club and Alex Neil deserves all the credit in the world for getting them over the line after so many years of trying. Finally, a word for my good mate Steve Evans who helped keep Stevenage in the Football League after a difficult campaign. Credit to Phil Wallace for making the change when he did and to Steve for organising his players and getting the results they needed. They will be looking higher next time around. Enjoy the summer!

GO TO HELL! The perfect tribute to music legends Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman, Vicky Edwards catches up with Martha Kirby and Glenn Adamson from Jim Steinman’s Bat Out of Hell The Musical.
If you didn’t already know that Bat Out of Hell started life as a musical, it’s a fact that probably comes as no surprise - the songs are so theatrical and anthemic. Entitled Neverland and written by Steinman in 1974, the premise was a futuristic Peter Pan story. But producers didn’t bite, so in 1977 the album was recorded instead, claiming an eight-year tenancy in the UK charts and turning Meat Loaf a global superstar. And when the show finally hit the stage in 2017, the result was pretty much the same: two sell-out West End seasons and a ‘packed-to the-rafters’ run in Manchester. Now, in the wake of Steinman’s death last year, and more recently that of Meat Loaf, it certainly feels like a fitting time for their theatrical legacy to be embarking on a national tour.
“The show has always paid tribute to both Meat and Jim’s work. It is now our place to continue sharing their legacy and greatness,” says Martha, who plays Raven.
“Meat was a true inspiration of mine and I always hoped that when he was well enough to perform again that he would join us for a song or two. He was famous for never performing a song the same way twice. I hope we can carry that with us - he was my type of performer,” adds Glenn, who plays the forever-young Strat. But you don’t have to know anything about the album to appreciate the show - both Martha and Glenn are adamant on this count.
“It is just a great night out; high octane, high energy and like a party,” says Glenn. “Just what we need after all that we have been through lately. Yes; it’s nostalgia for people who grew up with the album, but it is also a really great story that resonates with younger audiences.”
Martha nods her agreement. “The music was what initially drew me to the show. I’d never heard it, but I listened to it before I auditioned and just loved it. Singing and being engulfed by such incredible music every night is something I will never take for granted.” And while the storyline has its roots in JM Barrie’s Edwardian classic, there is a rather startling prescience in this big, bold and gripping reimagining. “A group of teens have been frozen at the age of eighteen and can’t age past that point. But Raven manages to evade the virus and to age. She meets Strat, one of ‘the Lost’, and we follow their love story,” explains Glenn.
Picking up the thread, Martha says: “The fact that Raven can’t age because of a strange virus is almost too scary really - she’s confined to her room and her family are shielding her.” So we’re talking about a production in which pure musical brilliance meets a modern reworking of a classic, garnished with a hefty pinch of art intimidating life. Is that a fair analysis? Glenn nods his assents, adding: “And it is almost funny that when the script was written people thought it was farfetched!”
Far-fetched or not, there’s no denying the show’s success.
june22.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 05/06/2022 19:07 Page 49
Winning critical acclaim, being voted for BBC Radio 2s Audience Award for Best Musical and receiving eight nominations in the What’s On Stage Awards, audiences have also been wowed in Canada, Germany and New York. As for the album of the same name, it remains one of the most successful of all time, selling more than 50 million copies worldwide. Furthermore, its sequel (Bat Out of Hell ll: Back into Hell), which included the monster hit I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That), didn’t do too shabbily either. “Great music is timeless and ageless,” agrees Glenn. “Queen, Bon Jovi, Tina Turner - this album is in the same bracket as those by of these classic artists. New audiences are coming to older music all the time. And nobody wrote rock anthems that are essentially musical theatre numbers like Jim. I think this was his finest work and I’m just so glad that he got to make this show before he died.”
“You can hear the theatricality of the songs; you really feel the fact that they were written as musical numbers,” Martha chips in, pointing out that while some younger people discover the music first and then come to the show; others do it the other way around. “We get a lot of younger people coming to the show and discovering Jim’s music for the first time. It’s labelled as being suitable from age thirteen upwards, which I think is about right,” she says, grinning at the memory of her teenage brother experiencing the show for the first time.
“He’s a typical teenage boy and so when he said that he really liked it I knew for certain that it had broad appeal. Everyone falls in love with this show.” As for the tour, the cast will have to think of it as a marathon rather than a sprint. Already booked until the end of October, with new dates still being added, not many people in the UK will lack the opportunity of ‘going to Hell.’
“It is so exciting to see all these places and to visit all these wonderful theatres,” sighs Martha.” As for Milton Keynes, Glenn has a particular reason for being happy that the show is scheduled to stop there. “I’m a local boy there, so all my family will be coming along. It’s going to be so good to be at home and to see everyone”. Bat Out of Hell plays at Milton Keynes Theatre from Tuesday 14 to Saturday 25 June. The Gate House in North Norfolk’s Finest Estate ention the word Gate House and in most people’s minds it conjures up the English dictionaries definition of a small house at a gate that leads into a park, castle or other large building, often lived in by someone who takes care of the estate. Which is exactly what the Gate House at the entrance to Wolterton Park, a stunning 18th century 500acre estate in North Norfolk used to be, but now it’s been utterly transformed into a little piece of heritage heaven!
M
This Grade II listed building takes centre stage at the entrance to the Park and is the latest property on the estate to be brought back to its former glory by award-winning interior designer owners Peter Sheppard and partner Keith Day who bought the Park back in 2016 and have slowly been turning the whole estate back into a peaceful haven in the Norfolk countryside.
If first impressions are anything to go by, we are in for a real treat. The charming Georgian building greets us with its private gardens and stone columned portico that was brought from St Anne’s house, Kings Lynn in 1914.
Stepping through the large impressive front door it is more than evident how much care, thought and love has gone into the restoration, from the 18th century reclaimed panelling in the hallway to the Persian rugs and eclectic array of paintings and pictures everywhere – Your eyes dart from one to the other wondering what stories they have to tell. There’s two cosy sitting rooms, one is perfect for taking morning coffee as the sun shines through the window accentuating the many period pieces of furniture and crystal chandelier. The marble fireplace complete with
june22.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 05/06/2022 19:08 Page 53
open fire and logs is the essence of warmth and relaxation. The other sitting room has a more relaxed atmosphere and lends itself for curling up by the fire and simply chilling after a busy day exploring North Norfolk and all it has to offer.
The 18th century panelling continues upstairs in one of the bedrooms (there are 3 bedrooms – 2 doubles upstairs and 1 single downstairs) painted a heritage duck egg blue, with 18th century hand painted Dutch tiles in the fireplace, this is my favourite bedroom. The dark antique furniture against the blue panelling, exposed wooden floorboards and rugs, create a visually rich combination of understated grandeur.
Both upstairs bedrooms have their own ensuite bathrooms, one with ‘Jack and Jill’ doors leading onto the landing. Both beautifully appointed with cast iron baths, Burlington basins and large walk in showers, the interior genius behind the design is imagination at its best. Back downstairs, to the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of the house – The kitchen. The aesthetics here are a mix of country cottage chic and traditional farmhouse. Daylight floods through the tall window creating a bright and airy space.
The large wooden table takes centre stage, and the kitchen itself is equipped with all the mod cons you could possibly need, all blending with the traditional effortlessly. The stable door leads out into the private garden, perfect for sitting in the evening with a cool glass of wine watching the sun slowly fade away or greeting the sheep in the field next to the gate with your morning coffee, a beautiful, tranquil space to relax and breath in the fresh country air.
Exploring the Estate is a must, whether it’s taking out one of the canoes on the private lake, enjoying a little horse riding, or just a leisurely stroll there is so much to see and do, and of course you can’t stay here and not wander up the long drive to the main house and take delight in a tour (included in all stays) where you can see the splendour and impressiveness Sheppard and Day have created in all the rooms of this palatial home. The Estate is perfectly situated for exploring the many beaches and quaint towns North Norfolk has to offer, be it a stroll along the soft, golden sand at Wells-next-the-Sea or a visit to Sheringham, a traditional seaside town, grown around an old fishing village, you’ll never tire of the abundance of things to do and see.

Be sure to pay the historic Georgian town of Holt a visit. Around every corner there’s something of interest, from charming courtyards and alleyways to hidden boutiques and coffee shops and for the more cultured amongst us, there’s art galleries and book shops galore! If you only have a small amount of time to spend in Holt, then it has to be Afternoon Tea at ‘Byfords’. This higgledy-piggledy building is thought to be the oldest house in Holt (the cellar dates back to the 15th century), a survivor of the great fire of Holt in 1708 and a further fire in the building in 1906. With so many local pubs and restaurants within walking
distance or a short drive from The Gate House, you’ll never go hungry. Two of our favourites were The Saracens Head, a Georgian Inn within walking distance of the Estate. Wholesome British ingredients are showcased throughout their mouth-watering menu. We tempted our taste buds with cauliflower veloute and Tandoori pigeon in a chipotle and cashew sauce, this was an utterly delightful dish, full of strong flavours and textures. Roast chicken breast with brioche pudding and Norfolk venison loin served with black pudding croquettes followed, both dishes produced a burst of flavour that was a simply delicious.

Once all the exploring and eating is finished it’s time to head back to The Gate House, a union of timeless elegance, contemporary comfort and effortless luxury, all in the heart of the Wolterton Estate, it sets the standard for so much more than just a place to stay, it’s a home that you never want to leave.

Live Like the Queen with a Four-Night Stay at The Phoenicia and The Xara Palace in Malta With Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee nearly this month, why not celebrate this momentous occasion, and the long bank holiday weekend in style with a four-night stay at The Phoenicia and The Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux in Malta. And her career is booming: she's just hit three million followers, her new book Chaste has gone straight to the top of the bestseller lists and she's appearing at sell-out events. Determined to speak her truth and bare all to her adoring fans, she's written an essay about her sexual awakening as a teenager, with her female best friend, Lisa. She's never told a soul but now she's telling the world. The essay goes viral. But then - years since they last spoke - Lisa gets in touch to say that she doesn't remember it that way at all. Her memory of that night is far darker. It's Sam's word against Lisa's - so who gets to tell the story? Whose 'truth' is really a lie? 'You put yourself on that pedestal, Samantha. You only have yourself to blame.'
