Maintaining Motivation

I’ve read and written quite a lot about motivation and as a teacher for many years it was something I considered and studied to enable me to better motivate the students I was responsible for teaching.

As adults we all do things that we perhaps don’t want to do but somehow, we motivate ourselves to do them –putting the bins out, cleaning the house etc and while we might not enjoy them we often like the results, a clean house and empty bins. Sometimes we don’t even think about doing them we just kind of get on with – almost habit like when it comes to these repeated actions.

But what about motivation for other, perhaps less mundane things like looking after ourselves, effecting some changes in our lives, pursing things that are important to us. When it comes to these things it is easy for them to get a bit lost in the humdrum of life and find we have little energy left over to be motivated about them.

Every morning you have two choices. Continue to sleep with your dreams or wake up and chase them

Recently I was doing a big general knowledge crossword with hubby and he noted I seemed disengaged – he was right - I was. The reason was there were so few questions I knew the answer to. I don’t mind wracking my brains a bit but if I really have no idea I become demotivated. When teaching I always see it as important to make sure students experience some success at the start of each lesson – struggling with problems is easier when we have a previous experience of success.

It is important to have overarching aims but also to break these down into smaller steps or goals so we can see a bit of success and be motivated by our progress.

But in essence like so many other aspects of life, motivation is rooted in mindset. If we believe certain things we are more likely to be able to be motived. Believing in ourselves, our abilities and the fact that we deserve success and happiness will help us be motivated and stay motivated even if things get tough and we feel we aren’t making progress.

The first step then in creating long lasting motivation is to make sure your mindset is not limiting you. A good way to keep on top of this is to create a set of daily affirmations aimed at reminding yourself of some truths – such as

• I deserve happiness

• I am enough

• My potential is unlimited

• Today I will learn and grow

• I will focus on my goals

• Today is full of possibilities

• I will never give up on my dreams

There are plenty more you can devise for yourself.

But as I mentioned in the beginning forming habits can be very helpful for our motivation.

So, the next step is working out what habits will lead you nearer to your goals. We’ve probably all had times when we’ve started something new, an exercise programme a new eating plan or even a hobby and at first we may be very enthusiastic but it is normal for things to wane a bit unless a habit has been formed.

According to Psych Central it can take 59 to 70 days to form a new habit. Although of course this varies from person to person. If you are a highly incentivised or monitored they form more quickly and of course if they are things that you enjoy or can take pleasure in then forming them may be quicker. Rewarding yourself can be important and as with all things its worth starting slowly and building – people don’t train for a marathon by running 26 miles on their first run. Being clear about how the habit is going to help you fulfil your goals will also help with your motivation.

Other things that can help with your motivation is to find others who are on a similar journey – chasing the similar goas or dreams in the same way you might have a training partner if you are starting to run.

Depending on your specific goals it can be helpful to have some mentorship – from someone who has achieved what you are motivated to strive for.

So, while sustaining the motivation you need to achieve the goals you have set for yourself may present some challenges but there are a number of things you can do to ensure that you keep yourself motivated and moving forward.

When it comes to achieving our dreams, creating a life we are happy and fulfilled in then it really is up to us – there is no ‘sort your life out ’ cavalry coming, no fairy godmother to wave a wand.

Quite literally your future depends on you, work out what you want, how you want life to be for you then set goals and stay motivated to achieve the changes to support you living your best and most fulfilled life.

The Best Foods to Help Digestion

Digestion plays a significant part in our overall health and wellbeing. It breaks down everything we eat, so that essential vitamins and minerals can be delivered to every cell in the body. How well we digest our food will determine things like how comfortable our stomach feels, how easily we can go to the toilet, how much energy we have, and how well we feel in general.

The type of food we eat plays a key role in supporting digestion; some by improving the digestive process in the stomach, and others by helping to support the intestines.

Peppermint

Drinking peppermint tea is an old remedy for curing digestive problems – though is there any truth to it? Science says yes. Peppermint leaves contain menthol; a compound that’s been shown to improve digestive issues, including bloating, stomach pain, and the symptoms of IBS.

It seems as though menthol also has a soothing effect on the muscles of your digestive tract, which in turn may help improve the digestive process. Plus, peppermint oil can also reduce indigestion by speeding up how quickly food passes through our digestive systems.

Yoghurt

Yoghurt is a well-known source of probiotics – but it’s important to know that not all yoghurt contains probiotics. When buying yoghurt, try to make sure that you buy live yoghurt; as this contains active cultures that carry good bacteria and help our guts stay healthy.

Greek yoghurt is one of the best yoghurts to eat if you want to consume the live, active cultures that act as probiotics.

Kefir

Aside from live yoghurt, another dairy product that can aid digestion is kefir: a fermented milk drink that’s made by adding kefir ‘grains’ to milk.

Kefir is created when these grains (which contain yeast and bacteria) are mixed with milk – and just like the probiotics found in live yoghurt, these cultures can make it easier for our bodies to digest lactose, and reduce side effects like bloating, cramps and gas.

Studies show that kefir can increase the number of good bacteria in our guts while simultaneously reducing the number of harmful bacteria. Eating kefir is also linked to decreased inflammation in the gut, which can further help improve digestion.

ChiaSeeds

Chia seeds are high in protein, packed with omega-3 fatty acids, contain many essential minerals and antioxidants, and have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

They are also high in fibre, which is why they’ve been

proven to improve digestive health. Once they reach your stomach, these tiny seeds form a jelly-like substance that acts like a prebiotic. They help your gut to grow good bacteria, which improves digestion and promotes bowel regularity and healthy stools.

Whole Grains

Whole grains aren’t only powerful weapons in the fight against inflammation, but they’re also great for improving digestion. Some of the most popular types of whole grains include oatmeal, brown rice, barley, quinoa, bulgur wheat, and whole wheat bread.

The reason whole grains are so good for improving digestion is that they contain lots of fibre. Fibre reduces constipation and can also act like a probiotic and feed our healthy gut bacteria.

Tempeh

Fermented foods like tempeh are a great dietary sources of probiotics (healthy bacteria), and studies show they have a beneficial effect on the gut microbiome. They form a protective lining in your intestines to protect them from harmful bacteria and can help ease IBS symptoms, prevent diarrhoea, reduce bloating, and improve the regularity of bowel movements.

Tempeh is also an excellent source of plant protein and is packed with many other important nutrients.

Papaya

Papaya isn’t only delicious and refreshing – it also contains digestive enzymes called papain and chymopapain. Both papain and chymopapain can aid digestion by helping to break down protein fibres and, in turn, making it easier to digest certain proteins.

Papain is also thought to alleviate common symptoms of IBS like constipation and bloating. It’s so powerful that it’s often used as the main enzyme in digestive supplements.

Ginger

Ginger has been used for thousands of years for its medicinal benefits – and it’s known to be especially good for digestion. One comprehensive review found that aside from helping to lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar, ginger is effective in treating gastrointestinal issues like nausea and vomiting.

Miso

Miso is a traditional Japanese seasoning that’s made by fermenting soybeans with salt and kōji (which is a type of fungus). It’s so healthy that one of the world’s top wellness spas serves it for breakfast every day – and in Japan, it’s consumed as a failsafe hangover cure too! Like other fermented foods, miso is packed with probiotics that boost the healthy bacteria in your gut. These probiotics can also reduce digestive issues and help you get over gastrointestinal illnesses like diarrhoea.

Midlife Madness

I need to start by stating for the record that I know I am very lucky to have cleaners. Without a doubt they are a luxury, one I enjoy as it means I know that kitchen and bathrooms are regularly cleaned and I don’t need to spend my Saturday mornings pushing the hoover around or working up a sweat removing coffee stains from the coffee table.

My particular cleaners are very friendly and operate in a pack (2 or sometimes even 3 people) so it is over with very quickly which I like. The standard of cleaning is good but there are just a few things I wish I could change.

The first is random happenings. Like the sky box not working and we find it has been unplugged – the microwave clock not working, and we find its been switched off. The plug for the bathroom sink being nowhere near the bathroom sink or indeed even in the bathroom! This kind of thing happens regularly and although in themselves they are easy to fix once you know the issue – I’m not always a great detective. My approach to the TV not working is usually trying very hard not to launch the remote through the window. When I can’t find the plug to the sink I borrow one from another bathroom - thankfully interchangeable - but clearly it creates a bit of a trail.

We also discover a number of random items. Most weeks some cleaning products are left in various rooms but as I am disinclined to clean it’s fairly selfevident from whence they have come! Some of the other more random items are harder to pin down as we always assume they belong to someone else in the house.

My husband once made numerous comments about my new coat – yes, I was puzzled as I hadn’t bought a

new coat BUT one of my frequent ruses is to dash out something new and pretend I’ve had it for ages! So, I assumed it was an older coat that he may not have seen and replied – true to my knowledge that I’d bought it ages ago! There was also a cardigan – which to be honest looked very like one of mine – left lying around in the kitchen so hubby kindly gathered it into the wash. It was only when I was about to put it away that I realised it was a few sizes too small for me!

What caused considerably more consternation was a hairbrush with red hair entangled in it, found- wait for it – under our bed! I am not a suspicious person, so wondered if it belonged to son’s girlfriend though didn’t know why they’d have been in our room! So of course, I had to tackle him about it, he said he had no idea at all – but obviously even if he did and was ‘up to no good’ that’s what he’d say. Sadly, over the next few days there was also an earring – dropped I suspect while the en-suite shower was being cleaned. As it followed the hairbrush incident, in fact in the same week you can understand my consternation. It isn’t a very convincing response to simply say you haven’t any idea how it got there.

It is a blooming good job that deep down I trust him – lets be honest many other spouses have found themselves out on their ear for less. But our cleaners are nothing if not patient and most weeks they have to remind me to pay them – I always intend to do it immedictely but somehow days get busy. often they need to WhatsApp me a payment reminder – so the mystery was cleared up when the message also included a question as to whether we had found and earring and a hairbrush. In this instance it was a case of all’s well that ends well – but it could have been very different.

How to Take the Perfect Selfie

With social media now a part of everyone's day-today routine, selfies have become a key part of capturing moments with friends and loved ones.

But have you ever found yourself scrolling through your Instagram feed and thought, “Why don’t my selfies look as flawless as everyone else's?” As it turns out there are a few things you need to consider to make your selfies ‘insta worthy.’

With this in mind, we chatted to the team of experts at Likewize Repair who share their top tips, from choosing the best angle, to using the right filter, that will help you snap some amazing selfies this spring.

Get the angle right

First and foremost, when it comes to taking a selfie, one of the key things you need to consider is getting the angle right. Instead of holding your phone straight in front of you, try tilting it from left to right to see which side you think looks best.

Once you’ve figured out your best angle, make sure you are looking up at the camera with your chin pointing down with the camera up. While you might consider yourself a pro at taking selfies, no photo is going to come out perfect. If you're holding the camera low, point it upwards towards your chin.

Top Tip: To get the perfect angle, try holding your phone so that the bottom of it is at the same height as your eyes. This will ensure it is high enough to avoid the unflattering angle of your chin, but is still enough to snap that flawless photo.

Find the best lighting

Next up is finding the best lighting for your picture - no one wants a selfie where shadows are cast over their face, or the light is so bright it has them squinting.

To get the perfect lighting for your picture, make sure to steer clear of any harsh lights, such as computer screens or bright bulbs, and instead consider positioning near big windows with natural light. It's also important to face the light source, and move the camera so that the light sits at around your eye level, so you avoid any shadows.

Top Tip: Consider what time of day you are taking a selfie if you’re relying on natural light - you’ll often

find you get the best lighting for those all-important photos when the sun is at its lowest point in the day - otherwise known as ‘golden hour’.

Pay attention to the background

This is often at the bottom of a lot of people’s priority list when it comes to taking a better selfie, but what is in the background of your photo does actually matter.

For the best selfie, make sure that your shot is free from any distractions, whether it be clutter around the house or strangers walking by.

Top Tip: While the backdrop colour of your picture isn’t always in your control, especially if you go for natural lighting, light and neutral backdrops usually work best, as they accentuate the features on your face. This is, arguably, the whole point of a selfie!

Make use of your phone's camera features While selfies can be hard to get right sometimes, your phone actually has a number of tools to help make it that little bit easier.

If your front-facing camera just isn’t cutting it, due to the lighting or its quality, you can always try using the camera on the back of the phone. While it seems logical to take a ‘selfie’ on a front-facing camera, the camera on the back of your phone is actually better at taking photos and gives a much better resolution.

Top Tip: You could also try taking your selfie in portrait mode, which blurs the background of your photo, to give your face a sharper finish

Relax and Smile

Finally and most importantly, when taking selfies, remember to relax and smile! Taking photos with our phones is supposed to be a fun and enjoyable experience, so sitting rigid or forcing yourself to pose a certain way can make it a stressful experience.

You could try different poses such as pursing your lips - but if this just feels awkward, a genuine smile can work just as well.

Top Tip: To get that perfect pursed lip look, try blowing air through your lips as you take the photo as it stops them from looking so ridged!

Strawberry Caprese Farro Salad

“This strawberry caprese farro salad is full of delicious summer flavours all tossed together with homemade pesto”

Ingredients

1 cup uncooked farro rinsed

1 small garlic clove

2½ oz fresh basil leaves

¼ cup toasted pine nuts

80ml extra virgin olive oil

2 tbsp finely grated ParmigianoReggiano cheese

Kosher salt

Freshly ground black pepper

8 oz ripe strawberries

5oz fresh mozzarella pearls

3oz cherry, or other small heirloom

tomatoes halved

Method

Fill a medium saucepan with cold, salted water and bring to the boil. Add the rinsed farro, stir, and cook for 25 to 35 minutes or until the farro is tender and cooked through. Drain the farro and spread into a thin layer onto a half baking tray (alternatively, you can place it in a large mixing bowl – the goal is to cool the farro quickly). Cool completely at room temperature, or place in the fridge for 10 to 15 minutes to speed up the process.

As the farro is cooling, prepare the pesto. In a large food processor, pulse the garlic until finely minced. Add the basil leaves and pine nuts, and pulse until coarsely chopped, scraping down the sides of the bowl as necessary. Slowly pour in the olive oil, processing until mostly smooth. Stir in the Parmigiano-Reggiano. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Hull and quarter half strawberries and set aside. Once the farro has cooled, place in a large mixing or serving bowl and generously toss with the pesto until evenly coated. Add the strawberries, mozzarella pearls, and tomatoes and toss gently. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve at room temperature.

Spaghetti with Roasted Tomatoes

“Quick, easy, and flavourful this dish is easy enough for a weeknight dinner, but sophisticated and impressive enough to serve on a special occasion”

Ingredients

2½ lbs small heirloom tomatoes or large cherry tomatoes

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

7 large cloves of garlic smashed

Kosher salt

Freshly ground black pepper

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1 medium shallot finely chopped

½ cup panko breadcrumbs

1 garlic clove finely chopped

12 oz dried spaghettini pasta (otherwise known as ‘thin spaghetti)

Extra virgin olive oil

2 oz fresh basil leaves

Grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese

Method

Preheat oven to 450°F. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil for the pasta. Rinse the tomatoes and pat them dry. Place the tomatoes and 6 smashed garlic cloves on a baking tray, drizzle with olive oil, and season with kosher salt and pepper. Spread them out evenly. Roast the tomatoes for 20 to 25 minutes, flipping them every 5 to 10 minutes or so, until they are soft and have just begun to collapse. Meanwhile, in a small skillet prepare the breadcrumbs. Heat the olive oil over a medium-low heat. Add the chopped shallot and sauté for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring frequently, until the shallots have softened and become translucent. Add the panko breadcrumbs and chopped garlic. Reduce the heat to low and toast the breadcrumbs for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring constantly to prevent the breadcrumbs from burning - or until golden and fragrant. Remove from heat and place the breadcrumbs in a small bowl. Season to taste with salt and pepper and set aside. While the tomatoes finish roasting (and the breadcrumbs are prepared), boil the pasta until al dente. Reserve ½ cup of the starchy pasta cooking water and drain the pasta. Place the pasta back into the pot and drizzle with a spoon of olive oil, and gently toss to coat. Add the warm, roasted tomato and garlic mixture as well as the basil ribbons, and toss gently until combined. Add reserved pasta water as needed to help loosen the pasta until the sauce coats the noodles evenly.

Garnish each pasta serving with basil, torn or sliced into thin ribbons, and a generous sprinkling of toasted garlic breadcrumbs. Serve with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese.

Ingredients

200g flour

125g butter, vegan

60g of sugar

2 tbsp cold water

360g sweet apricots

3-4 tbsp of sugar, depending on the sweetness of the fruit

160g yoghurt

150ml whipped cream

1 1/2 sachets of Agar Agar

Apricot Tart

“This fluffy, creamy vegan tart is the perfect summer treat “

Method

Preheat the oven to 180C. Put the flour, butter, sugar and cold water in a Food Processor, or by hand until a crumbly dough. Press into the tart and also on the side. Bake blind for 20 minutes and allow to cool completely.

Stone the apricots and in a saucepan cook gently with sugar and 60ml of water. Puree well and pass through a sieve. Allow to cool slightly and mix with the yoghurt. Beat the cream very stiff and lift it evenly under the fruit mass. Boil Agar Agar with 60ml of water for 1-2 minutes while stirring. Add 2 tablespoons of fruit mousse to the agar and stir into the rest of the mixture. Spread the fruit mousse into the tart tin and smooth it out. Leave in the fridge for at least 5 hours or overnight. Decorate with flowers and fruits.

A Personal Touch: A Signet Ring with a Story to Tell

Father's Day is just around the corner, and if you're like most people, you're probably struggling to come up with the perfect gift for the dad in your life. Sure, you could go with the standard tie or socks, but why not give him something truly special that he'll treasure for years to come? That's where men's signet rings come in.

When it comes to jewellery, you want something that's not only stylish but also meaningful. That's why a men's signet ring from Baker Brothers, in Bedford is the perfect choice. With an extensive selection of high-quality signet rings, you'll find the perfect piece to suit their style and taste.

For those who aren't familiar, a signet ring is a piece of jewellery that features a design or symbol engraved on the top. In the past, these rings were often used as a way to seal letters or documents with a personal mark. Nowadays, they're more commonly worn as a fashion accessory, but they still carry a sense of history and tradition.

So why should you consider a signet ring as a Father's Day gift? Well, for starters, they're incredibly stylish. Whether they prefer a classic gold design or something a bit more modern, there's a signet ring out there to suit his taste. Plus, they are versatile enough to be dressed up or down, so he can wear it to the office or out on the town.

But beyond just looking great, signet rings also hold a special significance. They're a symbol of heritage and family history, which makes them a particularly meaningful gift for Father's Day. Whether they have a family crest or coat of arms, or you want to choose a design that speaks to his interests or hobbies, there are endless options to personalise a signet ring.

So if you want to give your Dad a gift that's both stylish and meaningful this Father's Day, consider a men's signet ring. It's a piece of jewellery that he'll cherish for years to come, and every time he wears it, he'll be reminded of how much you care. Plus, who knows? Maybe you'll start a new family tradition of passing down the signet ring from generation to generation.
