A bit of a
Stretch
efore we went into the threadcraft business, elastic was just something that was there, it held your skirt or shorts onto your waist and your knickers up! Of course, elastic has dozens of other uses, but if you were ever asked that’s what you would say, isn’t it?
B
We sell a fair amount of elastic, in varying widths, for multifarious purposes. Recently when we were stocking up we wondered (aloud) how elastic was made and that inevitably led to a Google search and a few surprises. Like most people (probably) I’d assumed that elastic was made from rubber. Wrong. Nope, it’s made from styrene and other petrochemical compounds mixed up with soapsuds. Just another type of plastic! How romantic can you get? Rubber is much more interesting. Rubber comes from trees in South America, although hardly any rubber is grown there these days. The tree was chopped down, and the latex scraped off the inside of the bark. This was then mixed with morning-glory vine juice by the Mayans (who also
used the same juice as a party drug!). The mixture was then laid out in strips to dry, giving them “elastic” bands. Or rubber bands, quite literally.
In the 19th century, Macintosh and Handcock industrialised the production of rubber to make waterproof clothing and, among other things, elastic. Out of those early experiments came all of the rubber products we have today, such as tyres, rubber sheets, balls, and — bungee cords. Rubber production moved from South America to Southeast Asia, and today most of the real rubber comes from Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. The trees are “tapped” rather than chopped down, and the latex oozes into containers hung under the “taps”. So although most “elastic” we sell comes from crude oil you will be pleased to hear that rubber bands are actually made of rubber. Some things haven’t changed. At least, not yet! MAN of the month
Kevin Kavanagh Age: Ageless Resides: In a beautiful area just 50metres off the Embankment. Occupation: Owner of Frescoes Coffee House Businessman, Chairman of Bedford BID Management consultant to the wealthy - Lol Describe yourself in 3 words? Bald, passionate and impatient.
You can't leave the house without? A jacket - I just don't feel dressed without one.
What makes you stand out in a crowd? I’m bald, passionate, and impatient!
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Right here, I have great family and friends, live in a nice part of town, play in Bedford Town Band and enjoy my business interests. Oh, and I make the best coffee in the world at Frescoes Mill Street!!
Your top 3 movies? The God Father, Lock Stock & 3 Smoking Barrels & The English Patient. What do you do to relax? I play Euphonium for Bedford town band. We came 9th in the national championships last year. I relax by playing for 40 minutes at home most days, and it keeps my ombrochure in good shape.
What three people dead or alive would you invite to dinner and why? My parents split when I was very young, (they've both passed on now) and I can't remember ever having dinner together, so I would love to entertain them at my table and then invite Billy Connolly to meet them- what a night that would be!
Most extravagant purchase and why? My Euphonium. It’s a Stirling Vertuoso. It was made specifically for me by a mate of mine in the band. He makes the best brass band instruments in the world. Very clever bloke.
What makes you happy? Seeing Frescoes full of people inside and out, enjoying what we do there.
If you could be anyone or anything in the world what would it be? Me. Just me. I'm very happy and comfortable with who, and what I am.
Who inspires you? Bob Dylan and Martin Luther King - they changed the western world for the better through Bob’s political songs, and Martin’s evangelistic stance on human rights.
Describe your ideal woman Strawberry blonde, slim, elegant with a huge sense of playfulness! Best holiday destination and why? Lilly Beach Island in the Maldives, bang in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and completely isolated. My wife and I walked around it, one foot in the sand and one foot in the sea, with a gin and tonic and it takes only 13 minutes - it’s tiny.
Saturday night you can be found where? Playing in a concert with Bedford Town Band, Boccellis (Joe’s place), Noble Rot (Charlie's place). Owner of Frescoes Coffee House, 20, Mill Street, Bedford. 01234 325747 8

Dior Garden Party Make-up Collection Spring 2012
Spring
Sensation This spring brings warm, luminous faces with just a hint of colour, with either a focus on soft eyes with sheer pastel colours and well-defined brows; bronzer for a sun-kissed glow on the cheeks and eyes; or metallic and sparkling shadows in lighter shades paired with soft pink, coral or nude shades on the lips. There will be bright, vibrant colours of course, but toned-down versions of neon shades that were hot last summer. Smoky eyes will return, paired with bronze lids. Eyes will be lined with pastel shades of green, lavender, silver and soft baby blues.

Cheeks Blusher is the most flattering beautifier out there. It makes anyone look ten times fresher, healthier, more awake - in fact let’s just say prettier. Placement is crucial, you need to sweep from the top of your cheekbone upwards and bring to the corner of your eyes, for that gorgeous glow. Tip: If you have pink undertones in your skin, choose a peachy blush; if your skin is more yellowbased, steer towards pinks.
Estee-Lauder-Topaz-Bronze £35, Debenhams
Lips Coral and pinky shades return for spring, along with neutral shades that compliment skin tones. When using soft tones, go for more of a wash over the lips as opposed to solid colour. Since this spring’s top trend is the nude look, a great gloss will also make your lips stand out.
YSL Volupte Sheer Candy Glossy Balm in Cool Guava £23.50, Debenhams
Eyes Like delicate spring blossoms you’ll see pastel shadows, as well as metallics this spring. Don’t be afraid to experiment, these colours are actually surprisingly flattering on the skin when you stick to sheer textures. To finish the look line your eyes with eyeliner. Applying some gold on your lids will definitely make you look like a spring goddess. Get this look by applying a gold shimmery eye shadow across your lids. Line your eyes with eyeliner. Curl your lashes and apply a coat of mascara.
Shimmer Cubes £16, Bodyshop
Nails Expect to see barelythere nail polish and neutral nail trends for spring 2012. The upcoming season will boast pretty pastels, nude polish, and delicate, feminine styles.
Caramel Nail polish Marks and Spencer, £7.50
For women who crave colour, Spring 2012 offers an array of pastel options. Muted pink, light blue, and soft lavender are ready to hit store shelves. Also, expect to see colours such as "eggshell" and "ivory" make a comeback. The lighter the tint, the better. Remember spring 2012 is all about subtle colour. 11

Hayfever t seems quite strange to be writing about hayfever with the temperature barely able to get above freezing and with a few centimetres of snowfall, but within a matter of weeks we could well see the first signs of spring and the misery of hayfever, or allergic rhinitis will begin. Symptoms typically include sneezing, runny nose, burning eyes, lethargy and headaches. For those who suffer, the pleasure of the spring and summer months are ruined by their allergy to pollen.
I
In Ayurveda, symptoms are classified by the three different constitutional types. • Vata (an air type) will usually have a cough with some phlegm, headache, insomnia along with restlessness and anxiety. • Pitta, (a fire type) are likely to suffer with burning eyes, thirst, yellow nasal discharge and skin rashes. • The Water type, known as Kapha, will produce abundant clear or white phlegm and will feel the most dull and lethargic. As a result treatment will vary for each type, depending on which is the most dominant!
Naturally the trigger is the allergy to pollen. However, allergic rhinitis can also result from other environmental sensitivities from pollution to dust, washing powders and animal hair to name just a few. Whilst hayfever sufferers will know when to expect their first symptoms, we are all at risk after a period of stress or debilitating illness, when the immune system has been on high alert and working harder than usual to protect and heal our body. Stress, overwork and illness weakens our immune system and as a result it overreacts and becomes hypersensitive to these environmental factors which it has coped with well in the past. With allergic rhinitis, this overreaction comes in the form of the overproduction of histamine in the mucous linings in the nose and sinuses.
with sugary foods, all of which increase the production of mucous. If there is no health reason to avoid it, local – local is important – honey with warm water and fresh ginger tea, taken regularly in the run-up to the start of the season, has many fans who report a reduction in symptoms during their next bout of hayfever. For treatment of allergic rhinitis, I concentrate on symptom relief, strengthening the digestion, fortifying and calming the immune system, soothing the nervous system as well as stress reduction. There are many herbs that offer both symptomatic relief and long term treatment and also have the added advantage that they do not cause drowsiness.
A strong immune system, which reacts appropriately to bacteria, viruses and pollution, and not overly threatened by dust, pollen and other allergens, is, in Ayurveda, linked to strong digestion with a seasonal diet of freshly prepared warm food, along with a balance of work and downtime. It is important to avoid a diet rich in cheese, yoghurt, ice-cream and cows milk along
Ayurvedic Health tip Regularly cleanse the nasal passages using a neti pot with warm salt water. Regular use will really help to clear the congestion and phlegm, soothe the inflamed mucous membranes and therefore
reduce the irritation. If this can be done regularly throughout the year it will help to reduce the symptoms and prepare for the following hay fever season.

Exercise for
Mums-To-Be! Since it is the Mother’s Day I found during my first Edition of Affinity pregnancy that everything was Magazine I thought it changing - my body shape, my quite apt to focus on mental attitude, the foods I liked and disliked, my hormones went exercise for new into full swing and for me exercise Mums to be! was the only constant throughout. I
regnancy is an exciting yet nerve-wracking time in your life. You want the very best for your baby’s health and your own too, yet the guidelines on what you can and can’t do during pregnancy vary massively. It can be very confusing and can actually turn women off the thought of exercising in case they hurt themselves or their babies.
P
could go into the gym and switch off from everything. I would do my workout and thoroughly enjoy being ‘me’. My workout helped me sleep better, allowed me to move better rather than waddle around and made me feel confident and proud about my ever increasing bump (and it was a BIG bump!!)
Exercise during pregnancy has been proven to help with numerous aspects of not just your pregnancy, but labour and the health of your baby too. Women who exercise are more likely to have a healthy weight baby rather than a heavy baby, they are less likely to suffer from back pain during pregnancy, they are more prepared for the physical apsect of labour and they have a better chance of getting back in to shape after the baby has been born.
So what kind of exercise can you actually do during pregnancy? I’m asked this all the time by my pregnant clients and my answer varies for each of them but the general rule of thumb is this: If you did it before you fell pregnant, and it doesn’t cause you any pain or discomfort doing it now you’re pregnant, then carry on and stop if these circumstances ever change.
Another huge benefit in my eyes is the mental wellbeing of the mum to be during pregnancy. 14
Affinity Magazine 2012 March main_Layout 1 copy 17/02/2012 15:14 Page 13
If you didn’t do any exercise beforehand then the first trimester is not really the best time to start something new, so wait until your second trimester and gradually introduce some gentle exercise. The best forms of exercise during pregnancy are walking, swimming, yoga (a prenatal yoga class with a qualified instructor is best) and light resistance training (weights) as this can help reduce the pain any postural changes cause, such as a big arch in the lower back or rounded shoulders due to extra weight in the breasts. How hard should I work? This again varies from person to person but you should aim to still be able to hold a conversation throughout your exercise session - if you’re puffing and panting too much to talk, then ease off a little. It’s ok to feel a little ache the following day but if the ache persists for 3-4 days, then perhaps you’ve overdone it and you need to ease off next time. How often can I exercise? A little exercise every day is ideal during pregnancy - this could be a 20 minute walk or even general housework is enough to build up a little sweat and get you out of breath. Aim however to do 2-3 slightly more intense workouts per week but now more than ever - listen to your body. If you’re exhausted then exercise really isn’t the best thing for you right now, but if you feel good then go for it.
What to avoid There are hundreds of exercises you can do during your pregnancy but there are a few we would advise you avoid: - Lying on your back or on your tummy after the first trimester - Any exercise or activity where there is a risk of falling and causing abdominal trauma such as snowboarding, skiing, horse riding, mountain biking. - Overheating, especially during the first trimester. Ensure you wear light clothing and a well fitted sports bra, drink plenty and exercise in a cool environment. - Holding static positions for long periods of time - this is particularly relevant during yoga when some positions are upside down, as this can increase your blood pressure I hope these tips have helped you choose some kind of activity during your pregnancy. If you need any more information then please feel free to contact me at jules@hollgroup.com. I am a National Academy of Sports Medicine Pregnancy Exercise Specialist so would love to be able to help with your pregnancy.
When not to exercise I know I’ve said exercise during pregnancy is great but there are times when we’d advise you not to exercise. These are the times: If you have experienced any bleeding or discharge, any sudden swelling of the ankles, feet and/or face, unexplained abdominal pain, severe headaches or dizziness and insufficient weight gain (less than 1.0kg per month during the last 2 trimesters)

Celebrate C
reative Beauty specialise in Semi Permanent Make-Up and Non Laser Tattoo Removal, and they are about to celebrate their First Anniversary.
Creative Beauty was started by Susie Bavister who is a fully qualified semi permanent make-up technician. She offers lip, eyebrow and eyeliner treatments that will last on average for 2 years so no more wasting time on make-up applications.
she only uses the highest technical digital equipment, no treatment will be carried out until you are 100% happy with your colours, shapes, consultations etc.
It is also great for people with alopecia or who have had chemo treatment – if you are going on holiday or are a fitness fanatic, whatever the reason you choose for letting Susie work her magic you know you can get up in the morning and look as good as you did the night before. If you are someone who has unsteady hands, bad eyesight, or simply find it hard to apply the perfect touch then semi-permanent make-up is the procedure for you. Susie also offers e-raze a NON LASER Tattoo removal procedure. The e-raze treatment works much like having the original tattoo, but instead of ink uses a specially formulated cream that bonds with the original ink and draws it to the skin surface. The cream doesn’t remain in the skin or replace the tattoo and the treatment is so effective that a tattoo can be completely removed in just three or four sessions. You can just get it lightened so you can have another tattoo over the top, or completely removed - it is entirely up to you.
Whatever reason you contact Creative Beauty you can be assured at all times that Susie’s aim is to ensure you leave feeling fantastic and looking great.
So don’t let an unwanted or unsightly tattoo stop you from wearing the clothes you want or stand in the way of your career! Susie carries out both these techniques in and around Bedford as well as other areas of the UK. She has her own treatment room as well as rooms within a large number of salons, so give her a call to arrange a mutually convenient location and time to meet and discuss your requirements. Susie is highly trained by ‘Finishing Touches’ and

Mother’s Day Heaven at
other's Day is an excuse to show all those mums out there how much they are appreciated and loved. So this Mother’s Day why not spoil your mum silly and make her feel like a queen for the day with one of the Mother’s Day pampering treatments available at TK Heaven in Mill Yard, Bedford. Packages range in price from £35 to £95, so as a mum myself I decided to see what it would be like to be spoilt for just a little while.
M
I decided to try out the ‘Relaxed, Revived and Rejuvenated Mum’ package which lasts approx 3 hours, so let’s be pampered………… My treatment started with an essential aroma full body massage which lasted an hour. I chose a ginger, lime and peppermint in coconut oil aromatherapy body oil that made me feel completely relaxed and soothed all the stresses and strains of everyday life away. I completely relaxed as my therapist Carrie massaged this soothing oil into my skin, it was the ultimate in relaxation. Once the massage was complete Carrie turned her attention to my Beaute aromanique facial where she used Mary Cohr products on my face – this facial was pure luxury, the face mask left my skin feeling tingly and refreshed, and the facial massage felt like pure indulgence. Whilst I was still lying on the couch after the facial, my eyebrows were shaped and so all that was left to complete my pampering was my manicure.
TK Heaven I was left alone to finish relaxing, get dressed and then my hands were given the attention they deserve – my hands were soaked in warm water, nails were filed, cuticles tidied, a hand massage given and the colour polish of my choice – WOW three hours are up, it only seems five minutes ago that I walked through the doors. The verdict: Does the package live up to its name? ..... Yes, definitely, I feel completely ‘Relaxed, Revived and Rejuvenated’ - so much so that I have booked the exact same package for my own mum as a Mothers day treat, (I hope she’s not reading this!) As I leave I am given my Mary Cohr goodie bag and go home to carry on relaxing TK Heaven offer all different packages and treatments, as well as the Mother’s Day ones, so why not give them a call and see what they recommend – go on you and your mum are worth it! Mother’s Day
Pamper his mother’s day make sure you relax from head to toe. Try this homemade hair mask, it’s good enough to eat, and using some cupboard essentials it won’t break the bank. If you are treating your mum why not make up a pot of her own special hair treatment - that homemade touch will show how much you care.
help to absorb the nutrients. As you've used egg, add a gentle shampoo to your hair first, work into a lather, then wash with luke warm water to make sure you don't end up with scrambled egg on your head (not the relaxed pamper treatment you are after!)
T
Top Tip Don’t comb hair when wet, leave till damp, then comb through starting at mid-lengths and ends and working up to the roots. Using a wide toothed comb will avoid damaging hair. When wet, the hair is at its most fragile, so take care!
You'll need…* 1 ripe avocado 1 egg yolk 1 teaspoon of honey Squeeze of lemon juice Fork Bowl Cling film/shower cap Hair in need of a treat
Benefits Avocado is great at helping to hydrate the hair, and it contains vitamins C & E which improve circulation and act as an antioxidant for hair follicles. Copper is also found in avocado, which is known to promote hair growth. Egg contains protein which is great for strengthening your hair; it also helps give great shine. The teaspoon of honey will help smooth the cuticle, promoting healthy looking hair. There are plenty of cupboard ingredients that will enhance your hair, and making your own means you can add exactly what your hair needs. It’s a fantastic tailor-made beauty treatment from your kitchen that is 100% natural.
H ow to Chop your avocado, and place in a medium sized bowl, add the rest of the ingredients and work into a paste. Using a ripe avocado and fork helps avoid too chunky a paste. Cover your hair and give yourself a good massage to help loosen your scalp and relax you. Leave for 20-30 minutes, this will make sure all the goodness in the ingredients get to work. I find popping a shower cap on helps avoid leaving the mask everywhere - f you don’t have one to hand try using cling film. Keeping the head warm will

If you’d rather the avocado was in your salad, why not give one of these three high street treatments a try. They will help treat those tresses and have you back to your hair best in no time. Used on a regular basis intensive treatments can help combat the damage we put our hair through on a daily basis, through colouring, and heat styling. They can help give you more manageable hair and help battle the elements.
The L’Oreal Hair Expertise EverStrong Nourishing Intense Mask will help repair fragile, brittle tresses. Using natural ingredients and with no sulphates it’s gentle whilst helping to reinforce hair. This treatment will refresh your scalp and hair using rosemary and juniper, giving a pleasant cooling sensation and leaving hair feeling light and in great condition. RRP £6.99 Lee Stafford’s hair care line is an ever-expanding range of products that promise to tame, encourage shine and repair your hair. Argan Oil from Morocco Deep Nourishing Treatment uses a Pro-Argan Complex containing Argan Oil, which is an age-old beauty secret of the Berber women known for its healing properties. This treatment smells fantastic and we love the quirky design and as Lee says “Have fun, look wicked, smell beautiful” RRP £14.99
All of the above brands recommend leaving the product on hair for a couple of minutes then rinsing, but if you want to really pamper hair then leave on for a couple of hours for a guaranteed result. If you and your hair have really fallen out, then pop the treatment on overnight. Combine the treatment with a relaxing head massage from a loved one and you’ll be on cloud nine!
The Pantene Pro-V 2 Minute Deep Repair Masque gives hair an exquisite treat, creating mirror shine. This intensive treatment contains micro-nourishers which help restore dry and damaged hair, leaving you with swishable locks. The sleek packaging will definitely bring the spa experience to your bathroom! RRP £4.49

after so many months of development and to meet with fans. I loved the pop-up gentleman’s club, which felt both traditional and brand new. It’s the same mix I hope men will find in the Bodywear collection. It was an amazing evening to launch my new collection.”
e was recently voted the sexiest man on the planet by Heat magazine so I thought it only fair here at Affinity that we continue to perv and check out all the hype surrounding Beckham in his pants!!!
The footballer also told how his sons aren't so impressed with his latest project. On glimpsing their dad modelling his designs, Beckham confessed their reaction was, "Oh my god daddy, not again. It's good, but everyone is going to see you in your pants!"
Last month in London, David Beckham celebrated the global launch of his new David Beckham Bodywear for H&M with an in-store launch, followed by a cocktail party at a pop-up gentleman’s club created especially for the occasion. At the in-store event at H&M on Regent Street, David showed his new television commercial, signed the collection and met with fans.
Meanwhile, the birth of his baby girl Harper has put an end to the family's "naked days", he explained: "I definitely walk around the house in my underwear. But not naked. With the boys it's not a problem because they're naked all the time, but with a little girl now it is different."
At the cocktail party, guests such as Jessica Ennis, Bianca Jagger and Emma Bunton were treated to a unique David Beckham for H&M experience, with decor, food and drink designed to reflect not only classic gentlemen’s clubs but also David’s British roots.
This debut collection is the first in a long-term partnership between David and H&M, and is available in 1,800 H&M stores worldwide, as well as online, so ladies why not get your man in a piece of the Beckham Bodywear collection and see if he too can ‘bend it like Beckham!’
David told us “I am very proud to launch my Bodywear collection for H&M in London. It was amazing to see the product at the in-store launch 31

Welcome to the musings of Yummy Mummy. Living in Bedford she is married to ‘The Husband’ and together they have 3 children, Rafferty, 7, Violet, 5, Roman, 3 and baby No 4 is due this year. elcome to my column! All my views are my own and are not intended to offend anyone, alas I may frustrate you as I certainly do myself and no doubt those around me at times. I would love to hear from you, your views, questions or just to share your experiences of trying to be a Yummy Mummy. Email me at info@affinitymag.co.uk
Husband forgot to book a restaurant for lunch and after a morning of fun spent at Robinson Pool we were all starving so headed to town for a bite to eat. First, and we hoped the only stop, was Frankie and Benny’s which was heaving with happy families tucking into their lunch. As you can guess it was full, so off to Pizza Express we went, only to be greeted with yet another full house! By now I was tempted to eat one of the children, however as we were in town we headed to a sandwich shop and Mother’s day lunch was a big baguette – thankfully, I’m not a no carb kind of Yummy Mummy and bread was my saviour that day!
W
How to Make Our Day Mother’s Day is fast approaching and this year I will be receiving the best gift any mummy could hope for – a baby! Number four is due just after Mother’s Day so I am hoping that she makes an early arrival in time for the celebrations. I’m in those last few weeks of pregnancy where nature prepares you for the arrival of sleepless nights and precision organization by making you as uncomfortable as possible, so you just will your little one to arrive.
Of course you don’t have to go out for lunch as there are other ways to spoil us, so Dads and children don’t leave it until the last minute to grab us the perfect pressie. Husband - if you are reading this - flowers always go down a treat (but not garage forecourt ones) as well as some essential pampering treatments. And there are plenty of local gift shops to choose a treat for us from.
The true Mother’s Day is, of course, the day your children enter the world and by whatever means they choose. In a perfect world it would be lovely if they arrived naturally, without medical intervention and minimal pain relief. The chorus of birds singing is entirely optional too! However I am pragmatic enough to realise that nature will indeed decide and, to be honest, as long as they arrive healthy and safe, who cares how they get here. Anything has to be better than last year’s Mother’s Day - even if I am in the throes of labour (I’ll spare you the details of my labours......well maybe I’ll save them for a later column!). The
Tip to Mummies – leave the magazine open at this page for the rest of the house to read!
At least The Husband cannot get into trouble this year as we have decided not to go out for lunch just in case the baby makes an early appearance! However a word of warning to all other Dads out there, book somewhere in plenty of time - there are loads of places to choose from, so no excuses.

On the
Couch
Helping children cope with
DIVORCE blaming your ex partner, this won’t help your children come to terms with their feelings or do your relationship with them any good in the long run.
t is estimated that one in four children experience divorce before they reach the age of 16. There is no magic word that will help children adjust perfectly to divorce, but, there is lots of help available.
I
Don’t ask children to choose between you, take sides, or be go-betweens; they may have divided loyalties or even worry about you. Just keep it simple; let them know it wasn’t their fault and that they are still loved by you both.
Many families manage the rollercoaster of feelings and emotions, and children adjust to their changing family over time, but for some it can prove overwhelming and devastating.
Listen carefully without taking sides or stressing your point of view. Let them express their sadness, anger, frustration etc. without trying to justify or blame anyone.
Parents all too often underestimate the impact of divorce on their children. So how do you break the news to your child that you and their mum/dad no longer wish to be together? Try not to pretend ‘it will be alright’ – as in their eyes it may not, don’t make promises that you will find difficult to keep - “nothing will be different” or “you can see mum/dad whenever you want to”. What you say will be dependent on your children’s ages, but ask yourself, and think carefully, about how much detail of the relationship breakdown they really need to know?
Encourage them to be honest about how they feel and if this is too difficult a conversation for you, then encourage them to talk to someone you and they trust. Let them ask questions. Some may be obvious, some strange – “Where will I live? What happens at Christmas? Will I have to move?” They may make assumptions based on what has happened to their friends or even what they have seen on the television.
No matter how angry you are you MUST avoid 34
Affinity Magazine 2012 March main_Layout 1 copy 17/02/2012 15:17 Page 33
Children who are confident and happy before the divorce will adapt more easily than shy or nervous children. While children with high intelligence still experience emotional problems, they will be less severe. It is possible that some children may even benefit from divorce later in life, with increased skills in social problem solving. Equally important is the custodial parent’s well-being. A well known child psychologist says that “less obvious” forms of stress placed on a child such as a parent’s depression can be difficult for children.
Let school know what is happening at home; you are warning them that your child may be upset, confused and may need a little more patience and understanding than usual. For the majority of children, maintaining a relationship with both parents helps them come to terms with what has happened. Deciding how to parent when you don’t live together may mean accepting that different houses have different rules, values and routines. Try to keep disagreements between you and your ex private and stick to agreed arrangements and commitments. Keeping communication respectful will show your children that you can put them first and help them adjust, accept and move on.
Simply speaking, happy parents make for happy children. This means that when mum and dad invest in their own physical, mental, or psychological health, the children benefit. And no, this does not mean parents are encouraged to sign up for luxury holidays in the Caribbean while the little ones sit alone in front of the TV: the children come first. Here are a few tips to remember as you try to help your children cope with your divorce.
It is a myth that children of divorce will inevitably be damaged in some way. They will be changed, yes, but only as far as any experience will change a person. With effort and commitment, parents can successfully help their children through a challenging time. Parents are still parents. Maintaining good parenting skills during a divorce is crucial to a child’s positive development.
out of school. If you feel your adolescence is struggling go meet with the teacher, and discuss strategies that can help. Relationship with siblings During a divorce, parents have a tendency to give older children a parental role over their younger siblings. Extra help around the house may be justified, but children should NOT be given the care giving tasks of an adult.
Children should NOT see their parents fighting. Studies show that when bad blood between parents continues to boil, children absorb some of the steam. Parents should try to continue a positive relationship with their children by sharing details of each other’s life. However anything related to the divorce should be avoided, as children worry about their parents. “The National Association of Social Workers warns that exposing children to negative comments or using them as messengers between fighting ex-spouses, will “create lifelong relationship issues for all involved.”
Free time Infants and toddlers need more support during imaginative play. School-age children may begin to steal or become violent. Adolescents may engage in delinquent acts or become antisocial. Outlook on life Adolescents from divorced families have a higher chance of starting to smoke or use other drugs. Some develop low self-esteem and become depressed. Younger children may feel depressed while pre-schoolers may feel responsible for the divorce. If this happens don’t panic - it will take some time for your child to work through their issues about the separation or divorce, but you should see gradual improvement over time.
Social support Friends, neighbours, relatives, schools, and youth clubs can be almost as important as good parental care. Grandparents can provide valuable support during a divorce. Children who have close relationships with their grandparents will have fewer adjustment problems. School Children from divorced families have a greater risk of doing poorly in school, especially adolescents. Some studies show that adolescents from divorced families are twice as likely to drop
If things get worse rather than better after several months, it may be a sign that your child is stuck in depression, anxiety or anger and could use some additional support from a counsellor. 35

Fry’s
footie corner
Kick Racism out of Football FIFA, followed by the Premier League, The Football League, The LMA and PFA are all united in their efforts to Kick Racism out of Football. The latest developments have turned the progress they have made upside down. It really has been going on too long and the massive strides that everyone has made over the last few years to stamp it out does feel like it has been trampled on with recent events. The most disappointing thing for me is that if people do make a mistake, it takes them too long to apologise for that mistake. As far as I am concerned and everyone that I know in football is concerned, nobody has any time for racial abuse in the game and we need to rid it as soon as possible. I am sure the governing bodies will be even stronger in a bid to stamp it all out. I feel very passionate about this subject, when I was at Barnet over 30 years ago I was the first manager to employ a black assistant manager, Edwin Stein. I also employed a black coach in David Howell. These two gentlemen came with me to Southend United and Birmingham City where we had tremendous success together. When I became Peterborough manager, I didn’t have the finances to employ them, so they both went into nonleague management themselves. Whilst I was owner of Peterborough, I again was one of the few people to appoint a black manager in appointing Keith Alexander, who has done such a wonderful job for black managers and coaches in this country. I don’t care whether you are pink, green, yellow, black or white, if you are a human being it doesn’t matter what colour you are. As soon as we stamp this ignorant, terrible racist abuse out of the game, the better.

id You Know? Marigolds were first discovered by the Portuguese in Central America in the 16th century.
D
They are hardy, annual plants and are great for cheering up any garden. Marigolds come in different colours - yellow and orange being the most common. Most marigolds have a strong, pungent odour and have great value in cosmetic treatments. There is a variety for everyone and for every need. There is a profusion of colours, multi-colours, and hues. Marigolds also come in a wide range of sizes from miniatures smaller than a foot to giant varieties that can grow up to four feet tall! You can select the colour and size that is perfect for your flower garden. And don't overlook marigolds in container gardens, as the smaller varieties do well in containers.

They are grown from seeds and like full to partial sun. Marigold seeds can be directly sown into your flower garden, or seeded indoors for transplanting later. If you plant marigolds in pots and containers indoors then transplant them outdoors, it will allow you to make the proper spacing without the need for thinning seedlings. Marigolds are robust, non-fussy plants that bring a lot of sunshine to your garden.

he Royal Shakespeare Company comes to Milton Keynes Theatre this month with Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, The Taming of the Shrew, directed by Lucy Bailey, exploring love, sexual politics and the art of illusion. This cool, sexy, sassy and funny production, transports the audience to 1940’s Italy and features Lisa Dillon and David Caves as the sparring lovers, Katharina and Petruchio. Charismatic and brash Petruchio of Verona is seeking his fortune through his abilities to gain the hand in marriage of a rich woman, and he’ll do anything! Katharina’s father, longing for his daughter to be married, is offering a generous
dowry for his daughter’s hand, but not until Katharina is tamed and her wild and unruly ways put to bed. Will the flamboyant Petruchio succeed in taming Katharina to a submissive life of domesticity? Talking about the production of The Taming of the Shrew, Lucy Bailey told us “Although written over 400 years ago, The Taming of the Shrew is a surprisingly modern piece. Shakespeare explodes the orthodox view of marriage as primarily a business transaction, that ensures financial security and legitimate descendents. Instead he champions marriage as a meeting of souls and an instinctive love bond with one's true mate. What is hilarious, and at times disturbing in The
Shrew, is that these intimate negotiations often take place in painfully public arenas and become a kind of voyeuristic spectator sport for the curious and the idle. The beauty of the play is that Kate and Petruchio finally come to a private understanding that is profound and indestructible.” Lucy Bailey is one of the UK’s leading directors. Her previous credits include Dial M For Murder, The Postman Always Rings Twice starring Val Kilmer, the National Theatre’s West End transfer of Baby Doll and Timon of Athens and Titus Andronicus for Shakespeare’s Globe. So let the battle of the sexes commence!!

Parmesan, squash and porcini mushroom
Risotto Ciao everyone! This wonderfully creamy risotto makes the most of simple, classic Italian ingredients In the vast culinary world of edible mushrooms, only one can be called king. What Italians affectionately call the Porcini (the piglet) is a ruling class of the delicious fungi. The meat-like texture of Porcini, with its earthy and somewhat nutty flavour is unequaled among mushrooms and lends itself to countless dishes. Because of their flavour, either fresh or dried Porcini mushrooms are one of the most sought after mushrooms in the world. Porcini mushrooms are a “wild harvested” mushroom, picked fresh from the forest floor then cleaned with a brush, sliced and naturally air-dried. No chemicals are used in the drying process so they can be classified as Organic Dried Porcini. The European (Italian) and the Asian Dried Porcini are the most popular because they have the rich earthy flavour for your risotto. Why not also try them in your next omelette or in a sauce or gravy over your favourite meat or poultry.

MarcelloPizzeria Marcello’s Pizza and Pasta is authentic home made Italian food at its very best.
A family run pizzeria that not only specialises in pizza but in real Italian homemade dishes such as freshly made pasta, parmiggiana (deep fried aubergines oven baked with a touch of parmesan and tomato sauce), Lasagne, Penne Amatriciana to name but a few, shut your eyes and you can imagine you’re in Italy. Marcello is no stranger to Italian food having previously owned two restaurants of the same name one in Hitchin and then for twelve years one in Milton Keynes where he won “The Pizza, Pasta and Italian Food industry awards for the best Italian Restaurant of the year. The food at Marcello’s speaks for itself. Affinity were given the chance to try a variety of dishes freshly prepared by Marcello - and the verdict (remember I am married to an Italian) was absolutely delicious. You need to try Marcello’s for yourself, whether it’s for Pizza, Pasta or other authentic dishes, be it for you, your family or a big celebration your taste buds will not know what has hit them.

Ladies make sure you drop enough hints!
who I would employ to work with me. Anglia News picked up on the story and came to Bedford College to interview us about it. We were emphasising the fact that apprenticeship placements are the key to success. Students are given the opportunity to learn technical skills alongside hands on experience in their chosen trade. It’s about giving the student the whole package and the chance to earn whilst they learn. An excellent standard of work with the ability to build confidence, enthusiasm and know how, to provide exceptional customer service.
Bedfordshire Business Women hosted a marvellous International Women’s Day Networking Event on Thursday 16th February. Shuttleworth College in Old Warden was the perfect location to host the lunch. On behalf of BBW I would like to thank Bedford College for helping to make it a huge success for us, the support and sponsorship was greatly appreciated. The day attracted 188 business guests from all over the county, 20 business stands, and two amazing guest speakers. Companies booked stands to showcase their businesses during the network coffee morning and proceeds from stands, raffle and auction were donated to St Johns Hospice – my chosen charity for the year. We enjoyed a gorgeous two course lunch prepared by the wonderful Bedford College catering team and listened to inspirational talks from the excellent Ruth Badger and T Sandeman. A fantastic day was had by all.
Our 5th Avenue client was the proud winner of a national competition. Nouveau Eyelashes promoted their prize draw to beauty salons throughout the UK. The winning prize was a three night break to New York and it was our client that won! Join us for our next network meeting on Thursday 15th March at 6.00pm. We would like to thank Elms BMW Bedford for allowing us to use their excellent car showroom facilities on the evening to host our “Network & Fashion Show.” Many thanks go to Impeccable Style by Punam, Stylizers Style Consultancy, the team at 5th Avenue and Michael Bailey for organising a great show line up just for you. We are excited about a celebrity hairdressing guest who will be popping by to give lots of up to date hair tips and advice and BMW staff will be available to demonstrate car basics to our lady guests on the evening.
Bedfordshire Business Women are proud sponsors for this years FSB Bedfordshire Business Awards which will be held on Wednesday 13th June at The Mansion House, Old Warden. “Bedfordshire Business Woman of the Year 2012” is an award category right up our street and perfect for our organisation. Focus on
Phonics a seaside scene and a child will be able to predict that the word ‘sand’ or ‘beach’ will crop up. Children also use the shape of the word to help them identify the word. So for example, without knowing the letters, the shape of the word sand is different from that of the word beach, and of course guessing and knowing what looks right is something we all do when it comes to spelling – we simply write the word we are unsure of a couple of ways and can often spot the correct spelling or confirm what we thought was right.
any people will have heard from the news that the government are rolling out phonics tests this year in schools. But many parents remain puzzled about what exactly we mean by the word ‘phonics’.
M
Efficient readers will use all sorts of skills when they are reading. Often, whilst reading, they will predict what the next word or words will be, and this is one reason why it is often hard to proof read something you have written yourself - you see what you intended to write and not what you have actually written. Even small children do this if they are used to stories and the general structure and pattern they have. Young children may well ‘read’ a familiar story aloud to themselves simply by looking at the pictures and re-telling what they have heard and, whilst this isn’t strictly ‘reading’, it involves a lot of the essential skills. Early books with pictures may, for example, show
58
But to read and spell efficiently we also need knowledge of phonics and skill in using phonics. When you are very familiar with something it is often hard to teach others; when you can ride a bike it is almost like second nature and trying to teach a child is a challenge at best because it is simply something you ‘just do’. So with phonics if you read well you will be using the skills but might not always be able to identify those skills to help your child.
Affinity Magazine 2012 March main_Layout 1 copy 17/02/2012 15:21 Page 57
Phonics is a method of teaching reading and spelling based upon sounds. As a fluent reader we don’t have to stop and work out how to read each word BUT we will have to do that with an unusual name for example. It may be that we were never explicitly taught phonics, and a lot of children will simply pick it up as they learn to read, but others, if not taught using a phonic approach, may always struggle with their reading and spelling. If you are reading this then you will be able to read the word cat. That is because you know the sounds that the letters ‘c’ ‘a’ and ’t’ usually make. Putting those three sounds together, in phonics called ‘blending’ means you can say the word cat. It’s the same with words like ‘splat’ ‘crumpet’ ‘splendid’ and ‘criminal’, each letter is one sound and by knowing the sound and being able to blend those sounds together we can read the word. In terms of spelling the word we do the opposite. We say the word, take the sounds apart and, hey presto we can spell it. Separating the sounds is usually called ‘segmenting’ in phonics. These one letter, one sound words are usually the first that children learn. But of course there are lots of more complicated words where one sound may contain several letters. Think of the word ‘plop’ and ‘shop’ both have 4 letters, but ‘plop’ has 4 sounds (p l o p ) whereas ‘shop’ only 3 (sh o p) as the letter ‘s’ and ‘h’ together make the sound ‘sh’. It’s the same in the word ‘glow’ (4 letters 3 sounds) where the ‘o’ and ‘w’ together make the sound ‘ow’. Now this is where it can appear to get more complicated because in other words the letter ‘o’ and ‘w’ make a different sound as in ‘cow’ (3 letters but only 2 sounds). Sometimes the sounds that letters make depend on the context in which the word is being used - ‘bow’ if we tie it on a present, but ‘bow’ if it’s part of a ship, same spelling but different sounds. Sometimes it is more than 2 letters that make up a sound, the following words all have the ‘oo’ sound but all made with different letters.
School Shoe Through Threw Cruise
The good news is that although many words are longer the system doesn’t get more complex. Long words are simply broken into segments or chunks and then decoded in the same way as shorter words. Some sounds are harder to identify and there are some ‘exceptions’ but there is a lot of research to show that using phonics to teach reading IS effective and that’s why the current government is putting an emphasis on this method. In terms of helping your child there are a few simple steps every parent can take: Concentrate on the ‘sounds’ in words rather than the letters. Long before they are attempting to read children can think about sounds. This can even be a game and doesn’t feel like ‘work ‘ as you don’t even need pen and paper, simply ask what are the sounds in ‘help’ ‘black’ ‘ink’ ‘fish’ even ‘tesco’. It doesn’t matter whether or not they can spell or read the word, the aim is just to get them thinking about sounds. But in fact it is something that parents often find tough as well, so make sure you join in! Words that aren’t even real words can be just as useful in terms of teaching the technique, so children can even try making up words ‘flob’ ‘stenip’ – ‘crindestinderbam’ – be as creative as you like! Once children get used to listening for the sounds in words the whole task of reading and spelling becomes easier. Make a link between the sounds in words and the letters that make the sounds. When children do start to write encourage them to say the sounds aloud as they write, even with single letter sounds. When you are reading books to them make a point sometimes of pointing to the letters as you say the word – obviously not all the time or it would ruin the flow of the story. Encourage trial and error When children begin reading and spelling get them used to trying things out. ‘Boat’ happens to be spelled ‘b o a t’ but phonetically it would make just as much sense to be ‘b o w t’ or even ‘b o t e ‘. Always try, especially with young children, to keep it light hearted and fun. There will always be some children who struggle with reading, for a whole variety of reasons, but if a phonic approach is used from the outset the likelihood is there would be far fewer who struggle and far more who become effective readers. Get on your
Bike
“Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride.” John F. Kennedy and have a slightly raised heart beat. You should be able to talk while cycling. Remember - take it easy to begin with. When you first start cycling you should aim to cover five kilometres in 20 minutes. As you become fitter and more comfortable on your bike, start to increase your speed and distance.
Now that spring is fast approaching and we all wriggle out of hibernation, what better way to enjoy this lovely season than cycling. Cycling is an activity that can benefit people in a variety of ways. It can be a wonderful way to improve your health and fitness while enjoying the beautiful weather and scenery; it is something that can be done on your own, with a partner or friend or as a family activity.
There are plenty of cycle routes in the local area, and many charity events use cycling as a way of raising money. One such event is the 2012 Champneys 10th annual Charity Bike Ride on Sunday 20th May this year. You have the choice of a 22 or 36 mile route around the Bedfordshire countryside to raise funds for Silver Star appeal, Target Ovarian Cancer, Prostrate Cancer and Champney’s Charitable Foundation.
Regular cycling will: Make you feel more energetic Help you sleep better Reduce stress Strengthen your heart Improve your blood pressure Help you manage your weight Spend quality time with family Unlike going to the gym, cycling is a relatively inexpensive way to achieve better health and fitness. You can also save money by cycling to and from work, to the shops or to school.
The event is a chance to get on your bike and have some fun with friends, family and work colleagues and challenge yourself. It's an enjoyable day out with a little bit of exercise thrown in and a fantastic way to help some great charities.
To get the most out of cycling, try to go at a pace that makes you breathe a little faster, feel warmer
Whatever your reason for cycling it is something that will bring you immense pleasure. 61

Questions from readers I am jealous of my ex husband, he left me for another woman over 12 years ago and has managed to move on in his life. He has married this woman and, although I hate to admit it, is very happy. I, on the other hand, never manage to hold down a relationship, I sit at home thinking of ways to get back at him and her but none of them seem to work - it is so unfair - he is happy and I am not? Your hurt is with you still because you feed and nurture it, yes you were broken when he left you but you are still here and to allow something which happened 12 years ago to rule your life now is so sad. My cards tell me that he is a completely different man now and that he will never be with you again. You need to mourn the death of the relationship so that you can begin to move on. They also say that your biggest fear is that another relationship would not be easy to find, and that you would feel worthless if you did not live on your past, there are so many men who feel just as you do, but you cannot expect them to cut through the barriers that you have put up against them, without you at least putting on a welcoming smile and trying to cut the barbs of the thorns first.
I am a 48 year old man, why do I have a constant fear of growing old? The cards tell me that your fear is not of getting older but of death and what you assume is the darkness associated with it. You fear the possibility of judgement due to an instigation of belief of evil through religion. Because you regret some of your past difficulties and know that you have done some things which you assume are unforgivable. I would have to tell you that as I have seen spirits and talked to them the judgements which come are from your own soul and amending things is your own choice, with angelic help, rather than being shown as cast into rivers of fire eternally. I have just started a new job, it is in an area that I have worked in previously and in which I was very successful and loved it. Do you see me being successful this time round and how quickly will the success come? The success that you crave does come, but first you have to realise that all that you know from before has changed, so you cannot rely on your old way of working. Instead of fearing this, embrace it, as it allows more of your natural charisma to shine through. which brings great things and is the way to new success. 62

Crystals and stones to help ‘The Third Eye’ The new age of Spiritual development is leading many people to try to discover their own psychic abilities, and there are several crystals in varying degrees of strength which are known to help this. The third eye, which is situated between the eyebrows and up towards the centre of the forehead, is where intuitive clairvoyance is believed to show pictures to the mind, and the laying of crystals on this area, and even taping them on to the third eye during sleep has been encouraged by some psychics through the generations, to help open the gateways to the intuition. The stones, metals and crystals below are the most widely used for this purpose:
Selenite This white stone is made up of miniscule tubes all aligned next to each other, which can allow light to travel through them, and this is one reason that this magical stone was believed to bestow enlightenment to the mystic mind. It is also believed to be endowed with the ability to attach to angelic energies.
Iolite Iolite has different colours in various directions in the crystal. A cube cut from iolite will look a violet blue, almost like sapphire from one side, water-clear from the other, and a honey yellow from the top. This property led some people to call Iolite "Water Sapphire". Its clarity and gentle vibrations are believed to stir the balance of the brains vibrations to a higher spiritual plane, enhancing clear visions.
Azurite With its bright blue colour and alignment with the higher Chakras, this beautiful stone, also known as ‘The Stone of Heaven’ is used to open the Crown and Third Eye Chakras for enhanced spiritual development and alignment with higher consciousness. Azurite is related to malachite, being a copper based crystal but instead has a remarkably vibrant deep sky blue colour and as such is also believed to lighten the ‘winter blues’ syndrome.
Silver One of the most psychic of metals, silver is believed to be able to transform the human mind into a mirror into the happenings of the other world. It is meant to be able to tell the difference between the soul and human-kind; and be able to draw spirit in. For this reason after a death in the home, householders used to cover mirrors with black cloth, to stop the recently deceased’s spirit staring back at them or becoming trapped on an earthly plane.
