What’s “Fat” about a

Quarter?

Like most other crafts, the quilting craft has its own jargon. A seam is always a quarter-inch wide, for instance – unless otherwise stated. Backing is the fabric you use to form the bottom of the quilt. Wadding is the padding that you put between the patchwork (quilted or not) and the backing. There are lots of other terms, including one which amuses people when they first hear it, “quilting in the ditch”. But the one which is most obvious to anyone who walks into the average patchwork and quilting supplies store – mostly because there are lots of them, and they’re usually well-displayed – are “fat quarters”. What are they? we are often asked by new customers. Good question - A “quarter”, in this context, is a quarter of a metre, 25cm of fabric, almost always 100% cotton. If you asked for a quarter-metre of fabric in a

Made with an authentic Italian recipe Pizzas from as little as £6.30

fabric shop, the sales assistant would measure 25cm along the edge and cut across the width of the fabric. In most cases this would be 25cm wide by 110cm long. To a quilter, this is a “long” quarter. A fat quarter, on the other hand, is measured differently. If you asked for one in a patchwork shop, the sales assistant would measure 500mm (50cm) along the bolt and cut that off. Then she or he would cut that in half across the width, giving you a piece of fabric 50cm wide by 55cm long. You never cut ONE fat quarter, you always cut two. So a “fat quarter” is a quarter metre of fabric cut “fat”. Fat quarters are more useful to a patchworker because a near-square of fabric gives her more cutting options than a “long” quarter. So there you are. You now know what a “fat quarter” is!

Fry’s

footie corner

he month of May is an important one in the football calendar because it’s the business end of the campaign where promotions and relegations are sorted up and down the country. It’s also a very exciting time because the play-off finals at Wembley Stadium take place in May. The play-offs are incredibly exciting, particularly in the Championship.

T

It is billed as the ‘richest game in football’ with the winners getting promoted into the Premier League, guaranteeing them at least £100 million over the next four years. Not as much money is at stake in the League Two and League One play-off finals, but it’s still a fantastic weekend for the teams involved. The play-offs have been a great invention as it gives team’s below halfway in the league table a chance of pushing at the turn of the year. It keeps the season alive for the majority of the teams in the division. The extra revenue it generates is also important to the football club. You sell more replica shirts, scarves etc. I have been very lucky to be at Wembley Stadium for three play-off finals and been victorious in each of them and I was fortunate to be at Old Trafford last year with Peterborough United when we clinched promotion to the Championship. I dread to think what it would be like to lose a play-off final and having only three months to recover ahead of the new season. It is so hard to bounce back from that heartache and it is why a number of club’s reach the play-off final, lose and then struggle the next campaign. The FA Cup final takes place in May with Chelsea meeting Liverpool. On paper, this is a very attractive final and both teams will be desperate to lift the silverware. Both teams have taken stick for their big money signings with Andy Carroll struggling at Liverpool to justify his £35 million fee. However, he went and scored the crucial goal against Everton in the semi-final. Chelsea spent a British record of £50 million for the services of Fernando Torres and he has struggled at Stamford Bridge for form and goals. He has had a difficult time, but is still a very good player. Also in May is the League Manager’s Association dinner where all of the bosses vote for the Manager of the Year. This is the biggest honour in the game. Overall, it has been a very exciting time in the Championship for us at Peterborough United. We have gained three promotions in the last four years and that has been a tremendous achievement, but in my opinion, to retain our status this year is just as miraculous because we are punching so far above our weight. The fact we have survived proves that the small Fry can exist. Enjoy the summer!

Let’s focus on

Here are few of my favourite lippies and shades tried and tested by yours truly: No7 Vital Brights Lipstick (Limited Edition): Shade – Blossoming Pink (£10.00) Rimmel Colour Show Off Lipstick: Shade Be Bold (£6.29) Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter: Shade – Candy Apple (£7.99) MAC Lipstick: Shade – Watch Me Simmer (£13.50)

option to go in full pelt with a solid bright! There are two reasons for embracing a bright lip: Firstly of course it really brightens up your face. And secondly, it saves you having to spend triple the time making your eyes the focus. Just lashings of mascara are all that’s required to pull off this look.

S

ummer is almost here, which can mean only one thing… big, bold and beautiful lips! I’m not talking the deep berry shades that are always a hot trend at Christmas. Oh no, I’m talking Pillarbox Reds, Tangerines and Hot Pinks.

Hot Tips for the Lips: For the boldest look, choose a matt shade. This not only creates a denser colour, but lasts so much longer!

So many of my clients don’t believe they suit bold shades on their lips, but when I ask them what shades they’ve tried, they coyly admit that, in fact, they haven’t dared try any…yet.

If you suffer with dry lips, a moisturising lipstick will work better. There’s nothing worse than seeing cracked lips when they’re supposed to be the focus.

One of my recent clients (a mother of the bride) wanted to try red lips, but had never taken the plunge herself. She was adamant that it wouldn’t suit her, but wanted to give it a go, since I was there to take charge. So on went the red, and up went the smile. She was so shocked at how much she loved it. She looked absolutely beautiful.

Choose a bright bold lipgloss if you’re wanting to dip your toe into this look before diving in. It gives you enough sheer colour without making your lips pop like a lipstick would. Exfoliate your lips as you would your skin. Use an old toothbrush or flannel to massage your lips before applying an intense moisturiser.

With this in mind, I think I need to spread the bold love. There are two options to this beauty trend. Either take it slowly by using a sheer shade that tints your lips with a bright colour, or the 10

De-Fuzz the Face No one likes unwanted hair. Especially on the part of the body that is always on show… your face. When the hotter months creep in, you’ll want to avoid that sweaty top lip. Awful as it may sound, we all get one ladies. Some of us are lucky enough not to have to worry about these female problems. Others unfortunately, do.

ashamed. I would be ashamed if I didn’t and it remained there in all its’ glory for all to see. It’s just called care and attention to your appearance. It’s not even vanity. I just don’t want to offend anyone with a grizzly moustache! Here are a couple of products and treatments that can help you in preparing your top lip for Summer:

It’s nothing to be ashamed of, so long as you’re doing something about it. It’s never a good look to have a shade on your top lip. It’s not sexy, it’s certainly not fashionable, but it CAN be disposed of! And that, my beautiful readers, is what you must do.

Veet Wax Strips – to be warmed in the palm of your hands, however I prefer to hold them against a warm radiator for a few seconds to get them really soft, ready to apply and strip. Or alternatively, call your nearest salon!

If you’re too conscious to take yourself to a salon to ask them to get rid of this nasty fluff for you, then there are plenty of products that you can use yourself, in the privacy of your own home. I will put my hand up and say that yes, I de-fuzz my top lip, probably once a month. I’m not

Nair Hair Removel Cream – make sure you read the instructions carefully. It’s best not to use this product when you’ve used other chemicals on your skin that day. Only to be left on for a matter of minutes to avoid drying out or reacting to your skin. Laser Hair Removal – usually offered in specialist salons, this gives you a more permanent end to hair growth. Always book a consultation before going ahead with this treatment. A De-Fuzz DON’T: Avoid bleaching the hairs on your top lip… There are kits out there that help you ‘lighten’ the hair, but if I’m honest, light hair or dark hair, it doesn’t really matter. Just get rid of it! I have been witness to “lightened” top lip hair, looking like straw. A definite ‘no, no’ in my books! Don’t shave the hair; it’ll just grow back as stubble. Your “girly nights” will never be the same again. Sabina Ventriglia, Professional Makeup Artist sabinav@hotmail.co.uk www.sabinaventriglia.co.uk

Spring into

Action

At last the sun is coming out and we are surrounded by flowers in full bloom. don’t know about you but this time of year makes me want to get outside, enjoy fresh air and feel healthy. As the warmer weather approaches lots of us think about trying a new form of exercise or picking back up where we left off last year. I know lots of my clients get back into running in the evenings, especially as the nights get longer. Running is a great form of exercise, it helps improve your cardiovascular fitness keeping your heart and lungs strong, it can help with weight loss and can be a fantastic form of stress relief.

I

I know getting into running can be a daunting task but here is my step by step guide to running a 5km run. In July this year the Race for Life takes place in Bedford so ladies why not set that as your goal? Get the Right Kit Well fitting trainers are essential for running. The amount of times I see people out running with fashion style trainers on frightens me. Our feet are so important when running, they absorb so much impact that they need to be well looked after. There are lots of sports shops that do a gait analysis, they will look at whether you pronate, supinate or have a neutral foot position. They will then give you a shoe that fits your foot perfectl, offering the correct amount of support in the right places. Ladies you will need a good sports bra, you can do permanent damage to the breast tissue and ligaments without good support. Check out www.lessbounce.com for a great selection of sports bras. Running kit - there is no need to go out and buy specific running kit but you may decide, once you get into it a bit more, that you want some proper running tops which allow your skin to breathe better. In the meantime leggings or shorts and a t-shirt will do just fine. 14

Be Injury Free Unfortunately with running there comes a risk of injuring yourself, but you can hugely reduce the risk of injury by following some simple guidelines. Always warm up with an easy walk and stretch before you run, then after your run it’s important to do stretches for your legs and hips. There are some great online images on the Runner World website. Type Runner’s World Complete Guide to Stretching into your search engine and it is the first link. I would also advise you get regular sports massages. If you are running regularly then every 4-6 weeks would be great (more frequently if possible). A good sports massage will keep your muscles in good condition and will reduce your risk of injury and aches and pains. I hope this beginner’s guide to running gets you started on a summer of lovely runs. If you feel you need more help then why not get in touch jules@hollgroup.com or call me on 07808 739651. Happy running!

Insomnia Recent research suggests that 1 in 3 of us are having less than 5 hours poor quality sleep and at some point we are all going to suffer from a bout of insomnia. Insomnia, once it becomes habitual, can be quite difficult to resolve alone. But there are many practices, herbs and treatments which can help, without resorting to prescription medication. In natural medicine we do not look at just the nervous system when looking to treat insomnia. Other factors are of equal importance, particularly the digestive system. Gas, bloating and constipation are a sign of a Vata imbalance and insomnia is often part of the symptomatic picture. To resolve any digestive imbalances within the body often results in a good night’s sleep. Both the functioning and energetic health of the liver is also important. Whilst we sleep the liver does most of the vital work of detoxifying the body and if this is compromised by insomnia, this may lead to excess heat in the body, which in turn may lead to restlessness and waking several times during the night. Equally, if we are too cold from poor circulation, we’ll find it difficult to drop off to sleep. In Ayurveda, our constitution determines both the quality and the number of hours of sleep we need. Vata dominant individuals (air type) typically need the least sleep. They can survive on around five hours which is usually light and restless. They are the most prone to chronic insomnia from over-thinking and worrying. It is really important for their general health to ensure they seek treatment to help maximise the length and quality of their sleep, as sleeping patterns can change quickly.

Kapha (water type) enjoy the best quality sleep for between 8-10 hours and rarely have problems sleeping, unless one of the other doshas is out of balance, if this is the case some warming spices and herbs for a short period will generally resolve the problem. Whilst different herbs are prescribed depending on the constitution, ashwaghanda, an Ayurvedic herb with a multitude of health benefits, taken along with passion flower are two of my favourite herbs to help sleep. But there are many others, depending on individual needs and constitution, such as vervain – great if you’re overworked and stressed, lemon balm, rose, chamomile and hops. These can all be taken as teas, tinctures or capsules. A few drops of a relaxing essential oil on the pillow such as lavender may also help. Massage is one of the great stress relievers. Either visit a professional or have a neck and shoulder massage before bedtime.

Ayurvedic Health tip If you have a juicer, juice 4 sticks of celery and add 1 teaspoon of honey and drink late in the evening. Alternatively, if you drink milk: warm a glass of cow or soya milk and add a generous pinch of nutmeg and pepper along with a little honey to taste and drink before going to bed. If you are taking prescription medication or pregnant, please consult a professional before taking a herbal prescription for insomnia.

If you are Pitta dominant (fire type) you will generally need between 5-7 hours sleep a night. However, if you are too hot, stressed, frustrated or If you would like help in conquering insomnia angry you will suffer from insomnia. Alcohol will naturally, for a tailor-made prescription please definitely make this problem worse as alcohol is contact.... very heating for the body. It’s handy to have a hat or scarf to cover the hair when you are out and about in the sun. This will not only protect your hair but also your scalp – if you don’t like to wear hats, then use a leave-in conditioner to help protect and moisturise your locks. Always rinse hair after swimming to get rid of as much chlorine as possible, and after a day enjoying the sun why not apply an intensive treatment overnight to really help hydrate dry, sun-scorched hair. 18

Let us introduce you to

GelColor M

anicures with super-shiny extra long lasting wear? Affinity brings you the scoop on the latest gel innovation by OPI.

There’s nothing worse than painting your nails, or getting them done at a salon, and then smudging or chipping them straight away, and believe me I am the world’s worse for this. It’s pretty much impossible to keep your nails looking good unless you sit around doing literally nothing all day, and you have someone holding things for you. Which I have to say is a privilege very few of us can enjoy. Which is why I was really excited to be asked by TK Heaven, Beauty Therapy Clinic in Mill Yard, Bedford to try out their brand new OPI gel manicure, guaranteed for two weeks! It sounded like a great idea – unlike a regular manicure you can leave straight after it’s finished, with none of this ‘waiting around for your nails to dry’ business. It’s quick, easy and effective and lasts at least two weeks without the least sign of chipping!! It sounded too good to be tru, so let’s try it out…….. OPI gel manicure uses OPI base coat, top coat, and nail lacquer in an assortment of colours as well as avoplex nail and cuticle oil. After the gel manicure I was amazed how my nails looked and was almost too scared to touch them for fear of smudging. It took me a few hours to forget I didn’t have to behave all daintily with my hands and now, as I write this nearly two weeks later, my nails look as good as when I walked out the salon.

GelColor by OPI

Everyone has commented on my nails and I take great delight in waving my hands around for people to admire. This is a must for anyone who constantly finds themselves with chipped nails, or who doesn’t want to have to keep getting them painted. It’s a blessing for the lazy lady like me who wants her nails to look good without too much effort! TK Heaven 7 Mill Yard, Bedford 01234 363044 www.tkheaven.co.uk

Wiggles replace

Wobbles ocal lady, Leanne, 31 from Clapham has shed an amazing 3st of baby weight with Slimming World and is now wiggling her way around Bedford performing belly dancing at several community events.

L

Leanne found the pounds had quietly crept on over the years, but it was only when she was preparing to get ready for a friend’s wedding that she noticed just how much weight she had gained. “As I pulled the dress on I found, to my horror that it would not zip up. I quickly started pulling everything and anything out of my wardrobe trying them on, and as each and every one of them refused to button up I burst into tears.” Leanne says that this was her lowest

point. “I was so ashamed and couldn’t believe that I had got that big – particularly as I am a dance teacher, I just felt a complete failure. Like many women I have always been conscious of my weight and have tried lots of different slimming methods over the years but I couldn’t stick at anything.” It was as this point Leanne decided to make a life changing decision - to join a Slimming World group. “I was really sceptical at first, but I felt encouraged by the member’s successes and just how friendly they all were. My mum set me a challenge, offering me £50 when I lost half a stone and to her surprise this only took me two weeks!” Spurred on by her weight loss and

Mucky Races

A

s I looked down at my jelly belly, I knew the time had finally come. I had spent my entire pregnancy raiding the biscuit tin, reasoning that I’d have to go on a postbaby diet anyway, so I may as well enjoy my food in the meantime.

in moderation after that. This would be tough. Over the course of two months I lost 12.1 Ibs and 16 inches and my BMI fell by 2.4. Due to the fact I was breast-feeding I couldn’t follow the diet to the letter and other bootcampers did lose more in the same time

Biggest Losers:

I’d promised myself (and my rather concerned husband) that I’d sort my body out after our baby was sleeping through the night. But how? I really didn’t fancy returning to my old gym, where the classes were full of yummy mummies prancing about in their designer gear and make-up. Neither did I want to be shouted at army-style and told that I was a loser if I didn’t hit the deck and manage 100 press-ups.

Books Rattu lost 13lb in his first 3 weeks Julia Juksa lost 6.2% body fat, 2% of which was visceral fat (the important one, the fats around those vital organs) in 2 months. Wendy Smith lost 18 Inches in 2 months. Amber McCardle reduced her BMI by 6 in 2 months. My challenge ended by competing, with Camille and other bootcampers, in Northampton’s 5K “Mucky Race”. We braved torrential rain, hail stones and pools of mud and went on to win fastest female group.

No, I was looking for someone firm but friendly, motivational but not intimidating and professional but not too serious. I found these qualities in Camille Stephens, founder of Bedford 5 Star Fitness Bootcamps, who I’d read about when she won Bedfordshire Self Employed Business Woman of the Year last year.

But the benefits went far beyond mere weight loss or fitness. I felt much better in myself, happier, my hair and skin looked healthier and I was sleeping better. I’d also met some lovely people. As corny as it sounds, Camille’s bootcamp can be life-changing. It certainly has been for two fellow mums in my group.

I felt sick to my stomach before my first session, comforting myself by thinking that maybe it would be cancelled due to the rain. No chance. Before I knew it I was doing burpees, squats and sit-ups to the beat of loud music and- surprisingly – I was quite enjoying it.

Inspirational sixty-four year old Joan was very overweight, with various medical problems, when she joined. She was extremely self-conscious too and after the first session went home in tears.

Camille’s approach is based on the latest thinking in fat loss that favours short, sharp bursts of high intensity effort with small rests in between. Typically the main session lasts for about 25 minutes with the remaining time spent doing a “finisher”, usually sprints, an abdominal work-out or some kind of team game.

“I thought to myself ‘what an earth am I thinking? I’m too fat, too old and too unfit to do this’,” she says. “But then Camille called and was very supportive. I went to the next session and now I’ve lost weight, reduced my medication and I run. Something I never thought I could do!”

But exercise alone won’t cut it. As Camille kept reminding us, weight loss is 70% down to what you eat. So, no more biscuit tin for me. Instead, she advised me that for best results I would have to follow the “Bootcamp Bible” diet plan, alongside the fitness programme.

Geeta has gone from an unconfident, reclusive size 18 to a bouncy, chatty size 12. She no longer suffers from panic attacks, her relationship with her husband has improved dramatically (he’s now coming to Bootcamp too!) and she says she feels pretty again for the first time in years.

This diet is based on the belief that our bodies function best if we eat what nature intended us to eat: lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, meat, eggs, nuts etc. Certain things were definitely out: processed food (no more ready meals), unrefined carbs (no cakes and other goodies) and alcohol (goodbye dearly loved Rioja). My favourite staples – bread, rice and pasta – were also outlawed in the first two detox weeks and advised only

“It’s time we had more Camilles,” says Geeta. “She got me what I have been longing for for so long. She got me my happiness back. She will be a friend for life, come rain or shine.”

Top 5 Tips From Camille: • Write down your goals and keep them with you so you stay motivated: success is about having commitment and the right mindset • Take a 'before' photo and keep measuring and weighing yourself at regular intervals so you can see your progress • Eat like a caveman: the more food you can eat in its natural, raw form, the better. Processed foods are harder to digest and slow the weight loss process down • Drink lots of water: try and drink 3 litres a day as this will help weight loss • Create a support network: bootcamp is about training with like minded people who share the same values, which is an incredibly powerful way to get motivated and stay motivated

Bootcamp Vital Stats: Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10am in Bedford Park. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.30pm or 7.30pm (this is the only group open to men) at St Andrew’s School playground on Kimbolton Road Sunday at 8am for running club in Bedford Park, with a cycling club soon to launch on Tuesday evenings.

T

hey say that being pregnant can bring on some unusual cravings: gherkins, ice cream or spicy food, perhaps? Mine was a sewing machine. Not to eat, mind! Having never demonstrated any interest in sewing or making things for the first 30something years of my life, as soon as I knew I was expecting my daughter, I became obsessed with spending my days hunched over the table, creating all manner of handmade things ready for her arrival.

We will then suggest to you the items we think would make your nursery complete from our wide range of soft furnishings, and we will help you to select the perfect fabrics to create your unique and special room, before sewing every single item especially for you. If you are looking for something smaller however – perhaps a gift for a new arrival, or a birthday present for a special child in your life - why don’t you check out our funky sock toy range? We make monkeys, pigs, caterpillars, cats and dogs, all from brightly coloured socks in whatever colours you like! Or maybe you would prefer some bespoke bunting, with your new baby’s name on it?

So by the time Sophie was born in May last year, I’d made her a mountain of vibrant and funky handmade fabric toys and decorated her nursery with lots of brightly-coloured accessories. Now that Sophie is approaching her first birthday, I’ve managed to turn this obsession into a business, and so evolved “handmade by sewphie”!

All of our items are made from scratch, with love. We are passionate about making the perfect products for each and every one of our customers, using stunning fabrics and creating items that will last for years.

Our aim is to replicate what I’ve done in our house, and to help mums and dads to create their own unique and bespoke nurseries, full of gorgeous accessories and unique toys.

See our current range on our website: www.handmadebysewphie.co.uk info@handmadebysewphie.com

Our nursery accessories range is always expanding, but includes the basics such as cot or crib bumpers, nappy stackers, laundry bags or cot tidys; things to make the room more comfortable such as cushions, beanbags, doorstops or keepsake boards; and fantastic personalised items such as fabric letters, or bunting. If there’s something you need for your nursery that we’re not yet stocking – just ask and we’ll get sewing! We also offer a full nursery design service, which begins with a consultation visit in your home, so we can get a really good understanding of the things you like: colours, patterns or themes. We will then take the time to find out what you'd like us to use as our inspiration for your room: some favourite wallpaper, a set of bedding or even the colour scheme from your wedding!

of missing out on something.” I decided to see how obsessed myself and three girlfriends actually were when we went out for a girlie evening. I didn’t tell them what I was doing as I wanted them to all behave normally. On arriving at the village pub and ordering drinks two of my friends got their phones out of their bags and placed them on the bar in front of them, (checking them before putting them down), I lasted 10 minutes before I checked mine for any emails (and I was aware of the experiment I was trying out!). During dinner I counted each one of us averaged reaching for our phones to check for texts/emails, tweeting, texting, finding an image/song, making a phone call and anything else you do with a phone approximately 7 times each, does this make us obsessed?

Research shows twothirds of us are addicted to our phones

Research shows two-thirds of us are addicted to our phones, and fear of losing them is a common ailment which even has it’s own name; ‘nomophobia’ (‘no mobile phone phobia’), interestingly, more women worry about losing their phone than men.

Someone call, text, ping me

Think about the amount of time we spend toying with them, dressing them up in fancy covers, caressing them lovingly, and texting/emailing/playing with words with friends when they are sat in front of us and we should actually be talking to them.

Then there’s the getting in the car after to find myself looking through my bag yelling ‘stop the car, I’ve left my phone at the pub (although I’m sure I sent a text as I got in the car), hang on it’s ok I’ve found it in my bag!!!!!!!!!!

Get your lawn in great shape with

I

f your lawn is not looking at its best, don’t worry now is the perfect time to give your lawn a well-needed Spring boost and prepare it for all those bank holiday parties later in the year. Whatever its condition Lawnscience has a treatment plan to fit its needs and your pocket.

Quite often at this time of year moss is the major issue for homeowners and if this is a problem affecting your lawn it really is vital to fully understand the reasons why moss is invading your lawn, because without this knowledge it is impossible to correct the situation and return your lawn to a healthy lush state. One of the reasons why the Lawnscience treatment programmes are so effective is that Lawnscience carry out the most thorough investigation into the condition of your lawn and the soil underneath it before they do anything. “It’s all part of the service says Lawnscience’s MD Terry Nicholson. “We can’t treat your lawn until we thoroughly understand it and that’s why we review its condition before we start to treat

it, and continue to review it throughout your treatment programme. You’ll always know how its progressing with Lawnscience. It’s one of the reasons why we have the best Guarantee in the lawn care industry. So if your lawn needs de-mossing, de-weeding or just a little TLC call in the local experts. We’ll arrange for one of our qualified technicians to carry out a thorough appraisal, advise you as to its current condition and prepare a treatment plan to bring it back to a lush healthy state... all for free.

And Lawnscience’s treatments appear to work well if their customers are anything to go by. A customer recently sent this glowing testimonial: “After you gave it the special treatment it looked as if nothing was going to happen. Then suddenly it all started to grow and we now have the most amazing, thick grass... And for the first time in 20 years (and after a wasted fortune spent with your competition) we are heading for a decent lawn, having nearly decided to plough it up this year and start again. We now receive regular compliments about our lawns, so many thanks.

Following the birth of her two children, she decided to set up ‘Rock and Roll Baby World’ to focus on her two passions; music and children; she had specialist knowledge in both fields and so split the agency into two divisions. In one there is a specialist Social Media Marketing Agency providing clients with an opportunity to extend their traditional marketing methods across the ever expanding social media platforms, utilising primarily the mummy / parent blogging community. As a baby, family and parenting specialist she can also offer clients a full national press, radio and TV service. The second division is frontline Music PR campaigns. Affinity sat down with Louise who told us about her upcoming projects, being star struck and her wink from Russell Crowe!

What clients are you working with at the moment? A guy called Justin Fletcher who is a huge star of Kids TV - if you’ve got children you will have heard of him, he is a god. Another children’s project called ‘The Land of Sometimes’, which is an audio book all about twins who go on a magical journey around the world. They meet amazing characters along the way, who all have their own individual songs so it teaches children about different genres of music ranging from New Orleans Jazz to Irish Folk; a new type of children’s boot called Splats (they are waterproof like a wellington boot but totally flexible, they even fold up to fit in your bag); a couple of projects with Nickelodeon ‘Dinosaur Train’ and ‘Dora the Explorer’.

he had literally just got out the shower, looked over at me and winked!! He was fantastic, he just did all the interviews and was very professional, no one mentioned him being late and then once he’d finished he flew off to meet Nicole Kidman! We were all very impressed. Were you in awe of him? Yeah sort of, like with him he was this huge American star who lives in a complete other world, he has his own PR as well as a personal PR - I must admit it was quite scary. I have to say though the one person I’ve met and got embarrassed about, and I have no idea why, was Sir Cliff Richard, I mean he’s not my era or anything, and I can’t say I have ever been a big fan of his, I can only think it was because he was so engaging. He gave me his full attention, looked directly into my eyes and came straight up to me as if I was the only person in the room, he was so friendly and professional, very odd but a lovely lovely chap I really, really liked him.

Then on the music side Deacon Blue who are about to release a new album, The London Community Gospel Choir, Billie Myers and a country artist called Charlie Landsborough. Who would you say is the most famous person you’ve worked with? Probably Russell Crowe, he had a band called ‘Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts’ (I have no idea where that name came from). We got invited to the Berlin film festival when he did the film ‘Beautiful minds’. We took loads of music journalists over there with us and the night before interviews everyone went out to a nightclub, including Russell who was surrounded by his bodyguards all night. The next morning we had booked a conference room for 9am and at 9.30am he hadn’t turned up. We all knew that he’d been out the night before and had got in really late, and we were beginning to get a little worried. He rolled in at 10am, looked like

How did you get into the industry? At University I did a communications course which included a radio and TV module. I started writing for a student newspaper and basically started going to gigs to review them and found it quite exciting. I had to deal with the record companies to get passes and I think that’s what sparked my interest. In my third year at Uni I got work experience with a music PR company in London and worked the summer there. I absolutely loved it and decided that this was what I wanted to do. I left Uni and wrote off to loads of companies, ‘Quite Great’ came back for me to attend an interview, it was

34

quite a hard interview but I managed to get through it and got the job as a junior assistant and worked my way up to PR manager and managed a whole team. I stayed there until I had my children, I never left because I progressed so rapidly up the ladder, it was a great experience and has set me up for life.

Have you got any embarrassing moments? There’re a few embarrassing moments I’m not sure I can mention. There was one where I was quite young at the time and we had these annual music awards at the Grosvenor Hotel in London. We had a big table full of music industry executives, the wine was flowing and I had had a few drinks. I spotted Simon Cowell near our table, and at the time he was managing Westlife when they were absolutely huge. I got up out of my seat and headed towards him ready to greet him as if I had known him for years - luckily I was pulled back just in time because I can imagine that would have been pretty embarrassing! But apart from that nothing major thank goodness, you always have these funny moments when you worry someone will turn up drunk for an interview or you have to stop an interview.

Who would you love to have as your client now? That’s really hard because the pinnacle of the children’s area that I am known for is someone like Justin Fletcher. I know you don’t know him but in my industry he is one of the highest you can really get. I was talking to The Sun newspaper last week and they were saying how hard he is to get hold of, even harder to get hold of and pin down for an interview than someone like Jay Z, he is so in demand! I would love to get into Disney, as well as Hotels for families. I can also see the music side of things getting bigger, and aside from their fame and fortune I love finding out about people’s backgrounds, they all seem to have a story to tell, which will not necessarily take them into the Music section of a magazine/paper. Take Chris Rea, when he was recovering from pancreatic cancer, he started painting these amazing pictures, he was in so much pain, it gave him an outlet to focus his energy and pain on, and so we then focused on this and his recovery, which made interesting reading. People were able to read about Chris Rea the person and not just his music. The approach is about creating a story around the person, not just album reviews and music features as these alone are not going to sell albums. Also people who pick up the paper may not necessarily read the music section, but they will read something in the lifestyle section.

Have you had that happen often? There was one particular artist who was incredibly famous and who obviously I can’t name (he actually passed away a couple of years ago). We had set up a day of interviews. He turned up a bit wobbly on his feet and you could smell the whisky on him but he was intent on doing the interviews. We did the first two and they went ok, we then broke for lunch and when he came back afterwards you could smell even more drink, so I had to call his manager to come and assess him to check he thought he was ok to continue. You have a responsibility, just like if I turned up drunk you would probably write about it so you have to be careful in these situations.

35

Where do you see the business in five years time? I would like to have an office that’s not in my house, possibly in The Castle Quay area of Bedford, with a couple of members of staff who I can bounce ideas off, and we will be known as an agency.

Be Part Of It –

Redken NYC Hair Awards 2012 he Redken national hair awards is a competition all about finding new talent and empowering stylists to advance skills and reach new heights. It was our turn to inspire the world of hairdressing by opening our eyes to infinite possibilities and prove we have what it takes.

T

Hundreds of stylists entered from salons all across the UK. Our stylists Jo Picton, Teresa Rosato, Natalie Manning, Sam Warren and Natalie Amodio entered the three categories giving them the chance to win amazing prizes, training and a Redken Symposium trip to Las Vegas in 2013. “Men’s Runway” requires a modern, stylish, high end, on the trend but contemporary look. “Runway Colour” is looking for a high, classy fashionable but multi dimensional look and “Runway to Reality” must be a wearable but commercial cut and style with plenty of texture, inspiration and sophisticated execution. Finding models always proves to be a tough task and is vital to achieve the desirable finished look. Behind the scenes we share with you the journey for success. Research is the key; our teams spent hour after hour scouring through web and magazine pages to search for the perfect autumn creation required. When satisfied with the perfect vision they would then attempt turning it into a reality. Hair colour testing, clothing, photos, make up, practice work and creating a mood board, all needed to be carefully planned and taken into consideration. The stylists tell a story; a story of how the transformed result had to be a cut above the rest. The hair colouring was tested on blocks (scary looking mannequin heads with human hair!) to create the perfect colour. When satisfied the process was repeated on the hair of their chosen live model. Shopping for clothes proved a hard shout. Now in spring months the teams would need to predict the

perfect autumn trend on catwalk. The photo shoot had to be booked with location in mind. Their photographer would need to deliver only the best quality of work. A mood board was made for all categories and showed a fashion journey. Created with care it featured the colour chosen, fashion inspired and Redken product used to finish the look. Thank you to the Art Centre who kindly helped to stick tiny diamante’s strategically placed! After several sessions working in between clients and days off the models began to come alive. One fine Sunday in March (thank goodness for the weather!) it was no longer a dress rehearsal…, this was it! The models hair was cut, styled, coloured and they dressed for the very last time ready for the photo shoot. The entries were then delivered by hand to Redken head office in Hammersmith, London. They all worked so hard and created some fabulous work but it was now to be in the hands of the judges. Before Easter you could feel the tension, waiting to know what fate would bring. Every 10 minutes the girls looked on the Redken official website for any sign of announcements. Due to the judges not reaching a final decision the girls needed to wait until after the Easter break. Then we heard…..two of our three teams made it through to the regional heats in Bristol in June. We got through with the “Men’s Runway” and “Runway Colour” categories. In my eyes all three teams are true winners and I am extremely proud of them for transforming their job into a career. There will be a judging day held in London at the end of April. The two qualifying teams will prepare their models once again for a panel of judges and celebrity hairdressers. They will keep their lips tightly sealed about the winners until the final announcement made on the catwalk in June.

Our 5th Avenue team are actively encouraged to improve skills and expand knowledge as it is part of 5th Avenue culture to consistently lift performance. We love our work and would like to thank all of our clients for their valuable support.

On the

Couch

Is Paranoia

ruining your life?

Worried about your last tweet? Think everyone’s talking about you? Do you panic if you don’t get an instant reply to your text? You’re not alone, until very recently – the last 15 to 20 years in fact - no one suspected just how many people had paranoid thoughts. But several research projects have now lifted the lid and the results are astounding.

cent thought there might be a conspiracy against them. Take Nicola a 36 year old female who works in banking ‘When I’m in the car driving I think the person driving behind me is following me to where I’m going! Every time I’m out socialising and someone gives me a drink or I get something to drink I think it’s been laced with something and I start panicking. I also have this problem when I’m out somewhere in public - like a supermarket - I get this scary feeling about men that they’re following me and planning to do something to me when I leave the shop. I hate these feelings, I scare myself but I can’t stop them’.

Paranoia has a damaging effect on our social lives, jobs and mental health. A study by Professor Daniel Freeman carried out over a month found an amazing 42 per cent of people said at least once a week, they thought negative comments were circulating about them, 27 per cent felt people were deliberately trying to irritate them, and 19 per cent had thought that were being observed or followed, whilst the remaining 5 per

Paranoia has a damaging effect on our social lives, jobs and mental health For Nicola and others there is no hard and fast rule for deciding for certain whether a worry is realistic. But by asking yourself these questions you can determine the probability of the suspicion being justified: • • • • • • • • • • •

Would other people think my suspicions are realistic? What would my best friend say? Have I talked to others about my worries? Is it possible that I have exaggerated the threat? Is there any indisputable evidence for my suspicions? Are my worries based on ambiguous events? Are my worries based on my feelings rather than indisputable evidence? Is it very likely that I would be singled out above anyone else? Is there any evidence that runs contrary to my suspicions? Is it possible that I'm being at all over-sensitive Do my suspicions persist despite reassurance from others that they are unfounded? 38

Affinity Magazine May2012_Layout 1 copy 19/04/2012 12:46 Page 37

The probability that your fears are unrealistic increases the more you feel that: • • • • • •

No one else fully shares your suspicions There is no indisputable evidence to support your worries There is evidence against your suspicions It is unlikely that you would be singled out Your fears persist despite reassurance from others Your fears are based on feelings and ambiguous events

Taking steps to change paranoid thoughts can seem like a daunting task, especially if you feel that there are good reasons for you feeling suspicious and fearful. However, there are strategies which can make a difference to the way you respond to your fears, and help you to recognise and avoid triggers. Dr Freeman said in the past paranoid thinking had been assumed to occur only in people with severe mental illness, partly because of a reticence in the general population about talking about paranoid thoughts. He said that until recently little was known about how to help people overcome their fears. But he said there were now effective ways - such as cognitive behaviour therapy and self-help techniques - to tackle the problem.

Ways to overcome Paranoia • • • •

Remember paranoid thoughts are common Share thoughts with people you trust Imagine another person’s perspective. Do not treat thoughts as facts and think of alternative explanations of your events. • Try not to dwell on your thoughts. • Do not let thoughts stop you from doing what you want to do. • Remember the positive things about yourself ‘Overcoming Paranoid thoughts’ by Constable and Robinson. So next time you don’t get an immediate response to your text, it doesn’t mean the person on the receiving end hates you, it means they are probably busy and will respond later when they have more time – ask yourself how many times have you not responded straight away because of circumstances. will see many more going beyond all limits of their strength and endurance to break records – quite literally ‘going for gold’.

ver recent years there has been a considerable rise in both the number and popularity of books/dvds and seminars on ‘achieving your dreams’. Whilst no one should fall into the trap of believing that positive thinking alone can change our lives, undoubtedly our attitude and state of mind has a huge impact on what we can achieve.

Having the right mental attitude is also crucial in order to overcome the challenges and obstacles that are bound to turn up on the pathway to our dreams. Even a cursory read of biographies of those who have achieved greatly will reveal that often it was their refusal to give up that eventually bore fruit. Harry Potter was rejected by no less than 12 publishing houses before it eventually came to print. Many successful people will be able to tell tales of the setbacks and self doubt they may have faced, but what ultimately makes them successful is their determination and a mental attitude which simply doesn’t see giving up as an option. In the words of Sir Edmund Hilary who conquered Everest in 1953;

This was recognised a long time ago, Thomas Jefferson 1743-1826, the 3rd president of the US and author of the US declaration of Independence reputedly said “Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal. Nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.” History is full of stories of folk who have beaten the odds to achieve success in their chosen field, and of course this summer with the Olympics we

“It’s not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.” 42

Affinity Magazine May2012_Layout 1 copy 19/04/2012 12:46 Page 41

But of course the best mental attitude also needs an aim. It sounds silly but we can all end up just drifting through life coping with all the everyday necessities and enjoying lots of it or not, BUT without ever making a conscious plan or having any goals to work towards. What we know about ‘high achievers’ is that they have a clear sense of purpose and something to aim towards. This is true for sports men and women as well as people in business, artists and philanthropists. Setting goals and repeating this exercise regularly is important for many reasons. We do not fully understand how powerful our subconscious can be, but recent thinking suggests that when we write down our ‘intentions’ this is a powerful message to ourselves, our subconscious selves, and this in turn may influence the way we respond to all sorts of situations and choices. And for the cynics, before you become too sceptical about the role of your subconscious, just think about the complex tasks you perform every day that involve the subconscious - catching something before it falls, deciding in seconds if it is safe to cross the road by making judgements about the speed of an oncoming car, or riding a bike, once learned you can do it without even thinking about it..

gain a qualification then first you may need to find about courses, where and when they are held, how much they cost, how long to gain the qualification etc and then get enrolled.

So having an aim or goal is important and committing it to paper is important. But like anything that’s important, it’s worth devoting a bit of time to thinking about it, BEFORE you commit it to paper. Aims and goals are more than ‘to do’ lists, they provide an opportunity to think about what is important to YOU, and where you want to get to. This may be moving your career forward, gaining a qualification or finding a way or working that enables you to experience less stress, or more time with your family, or it may be about pursuing a hobby or personal challenge like playing an instrument or running a marathon.

The process of mapping has been shown to be effective in everything from a business plan to an individual re-evaluating their career path. It has also been used by students to plan research projects or even make revision plans. That is because it is the process itself that gives us the chance to sort out our mental attitude, think about what we really want, make that our aim, then commit it to paper in a mind map which gives a plan. This will help us to stay focused and work towards our aim. In the words of Arthur Ashe, the only black winner of the Wimbledon men’s singles;

Our knowledge about how our brains work with the left and right sides working together but in different ways, suggests that using colour and images when we ‘map’ our aims as well as words involves both the left and right side of the brain, it also makes mind maps more ‘fun’. But of course when the mind map is made it’s useful to put it somewhere that will mean you can see it and remind yourself what it is you are aiming at and then make sure that what you DO will actually contribute to achieving those aims. It’s a bit like planning a journey to a particular destination, you may take a break, possibly even take the scenic route to visit something else, but what you know is that you will only reach the destination by moving towards it and sometimes that means you decide NOT to do other things. When other inviting opportunities arise simply ask yourself will they help move you forward towards your goal or will they actually take you away from it, and then make your decision.

It really doesn’t matter what your aim is, it’s yours, it doesn’t even matter if you change it as very often when people start aiming for something or setting some personal goals they amend them or write several ‘sub’ goals.

“Success is a journey not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.” So you can start your journey to success right now – and for any help and support with the process or to book a coaching and life mapping session contact attuned education.

Once you have decided on your aim and written it down, the next step is to think about what you need to do to achieve this – so if your aim is to

Welcome to the musings of Yummy Mummy. mouldy when we left it in a damp shed - so make sure between children you store your pushchair better than we did! The Luna was fantastic as it was roomy, felt very sturdy and again had a big basket and wasn’t too bulky.

A

So my checklist included a fairly compact yet sturdy and spacious pushchair with a good shopping basket and of course it goes without saying, it had to look good too!

The Pursuit for the Perfect Pushchair Baby number four will soon be with us so The Husband and I decided that the pushchair we used for the first three children had seen better days! As we weren’t planning on any other major expenditure we thought she should at least have a decent set of wheels. When I say the pushchair we used for the first three, I actually mean pushchairs of course. The first one we bought was when we were inexperienced on the dos and don’ts of parenthood and it was a case of ‘look at that lovely big 3 wheeler travel system that will protect our tiny baby’. But once delivered, assembled and after the first walk out we realised it would only actually fit in the boot of my 4x4 (another pregnancy purchase – small baby means buy really big stuff!). The really great thing about it was that it had a very big basket for putting all the shopping in - so that was a must on the requirement list. After the 3 wheeler we progressed onto a McLaren stroller – fantastic and compact with great handles for hanging the shopping on (you may notice a shopping theme here!) however beware as when the toddler gets out and the shopping is still hanging on.....the pushchair falls spectacularly backwards! When Roman arrived I just had to have a Mamas and Papas Luna pushchair, well the McLaren went

The hunt began and I became obsessed with checking out pushchairs in the street and I am surprised that nobody ‘had a quiet word’ with me as to why I was staring at them. I even stopped a couple of people to question them on the pros and cons of their pushchair and my evenings were spent surfing baby shop websites - I completely lost the storylines to Coronation Street, so thank goodness for ITV Player! So with the children at the godparents, the time had come and off to House of Baby, Mothercare and Mamas and Papas we merrily went, armed with very firm ideas and a strict budget. An exhausting day ensued of combating my bingo wings as I pushed various models around the shops. However as soon as I saw ‘The One’ all ideas of budgets and checklists went out of the window as we paid the deposit for our new Bugaboo – well it is red and fantastic looking so what more do you need? P.S It did actually fulfil all our checklist criteria – honest!

May is one of the best months of the year for gardens – everything is lush and borders are full of life. Spring flowering perennials are at their peak and the summer ones are preparing to give their show from June to September. If you are growing vegetables now is the time to plant tender crops such as French beans and courgettes. Salad seeds can also be planted now along with spinach, radish and carrots.

My plant of the month is Aquilegia (common names Columbine and Doves at the Fountain). They are old fashioned cottage garden perennials and are flowering now. They have wonderful grey/green lobed foliage which lasts well into the summer and charming nodding bonnet shaped flowers, often two tone. There are many different varieties but my favourite is Aquilegia ‘Nora Barlow’ which has frilled pink flowers with green banding. Others in the Barlow range include ‘Magpie’ which has dark maroon, almost Malindi Hammock £65 black, flowers with a white centre, ‘Blue’ with blue www.sterck.co.uk flowers, ‘Rose’ which has dusky pink flowers and ‘Black’ which is a very dark purple. They are happy in full sun or partial shade and will flower for weeks on end.

After much deliberation I was tempted by the wild mushroom and parmesan risotto, finished with truffle oil for my starter. Perfectly presented, it was full of flavour and cooked to perfection. My husband’s choice was pigeon breast Caesar salad served with parmesan shavings and croutons another culinary treat. The pigeon was tender and the dressing on the salad was delicious.

I couldn’t leave without giving into the delights of the dessert menu, Baileys bread and butter pudding with homemade ice cream - the presentation and detail were spot on yet again and the taste didn’t disappoint. And by sheer coincidence on the menu was the exact dessert we have featured this month, ginger crunch bombe with orange sorbet – this was total indulgence - the homemade orange sorbet combined with the bombe was pure pleasure, the flavours were delicate and zesty without being sharp.

Our main course was just as appetising, chicken breast stuffed with roasted tomatoes and mozzarella served with a pesto cream on a bed of I was surprised at how reasonable the prices were spinach. The chicken was tender, moist and oozed flavour. Many of you will be familiar with the traditional recipes associated with asparagus, so I thought I would show you one that isn’t so well known, but is absolutely delicious and can be used for a family meal or as a dinner party dish.

The perfect Bottle

Asparagus and Mozzarella Bake

Domaine du Colombier Chinon A light Loire, cabernet franc-based red with some fresh herbal tones of its own. Pop in fridge for 20 minutes before serving. £6.99 Sainsburys

Ingredients 32 large asparagus spears 8 tbsp Italian extra virgin olive oil Knob of butter 4 mozzarella balls, finely sliced 3 tins chopped tomatoes (good quality) 600g parmesan cheese (grated) Salt and ground pepper to taste 1 bunch basil leaves

Recipe Cook the asparagus in salted boiling water until al dente. Drain and allow to cool, then toss in the olive oil. Grease a baking dish (approximately 44cm x 24cm) with the butter. Lay sixteen of the asparagus spears on the bottom, cover with some of the mozzarella slices and sprinkle some basil leaves on top. Pour over half the chopped tomatoes, season with salt and pepper and then sprinkle 200g of grated parmesan on top. Repeat the process making sure that when finished the top is covered with the remaining parmesan. Bake in the centre of a preheated oven at 180c or Gas 4 for approximately 20 minutes. Once cooked, allow to rest for five minutes before serving. Serve with a green salad and hot crusty bread.

Annie’s

Gingercrunch and Meringue Bombe Ingredients For the Orange Sauce For the Bombes 350ml orange juice 300ml double cream 100g caster sugar ½ vanilla pod ½ vanilla pod 25g icing sugar 2 tsp cornflour 1 small orange , zested 2 meringue nests, crushed 25g gingernut biscuits , crumbled

Corner ocktail

As Spring is now well and truly upon us our thoughts turn to summer breezes, warmer days and longer evenings. Which can mean only one thing – outdoor entertaining!! This month’s cocktail is ideal for such events with its’ light fruity flavours, it’s ideal for a springtime aperitif.

Method Line 6 small ramekins or teacups with cling film, or use a silicone muffin mould, if you have one. Whip the cream in a large bowl until it just holds its shape. Scrape the seeds from the vanilla pod and add them to the cream with the sugar, orange zest and meringues. Gently stir, then add the gingernut crumbs. Divide among the prepared moulds or teacups and freeze for at least 2 hrs. To make the sauce, put the orange juice in a pan with the sugar and vanilla pod. Bring to the boil, then simmer until the sugar has dissolved. Put the cornflour into a small bowl with 2 tbsp orange juice mixture. Stir until smooth, then add to the pan. Simmer and stir until the liquid has thickened, discard the pod, then leave to cool. The sauce can be made 2 days in advance. To serve, take the bombes out of the freezer and place in the fridge for 10 minutes. Turn them onto a plate and drizzle with sauce, decorate with an orange segment.

British

Traditions W ith The Diamond Jubilee being celebrated this year, closely followed by the Olympics, we take a look at another Great British tradition ‘Fish and Chips’ Two years ago saw the 150th anniversary of the fish and chip shop and, with nearly 11,000 of them across the UK alone, it seems the nation’s favourite takeaway food is as popular as ever. Winston Churchill called them "the good companions". John Lennon smothered his in tomato ketchup and Michael Jackson liked his with mushy peas. For generations, fish and chips have fed millions of memories - eaten with greasy fingers on a seaside holiday, a pay-day treat at the end of the working week or a late-night supper on the way home from the pub. Few can resist the mouth-watering combination - moist white fish in crisp golden batter, served with a generous portion of hot, fluffy chips.

But fish and chip shops don’t just sell this traditional dish as most of them offer a large variety of food to choose from. Bromham Fish & Chip Shop, set in the rural village of Bromham in Bedfordshire, is one such shop, serving a vast selection of food ranging from traditional fish and chips right through to the newly introduced ‘Big Boy Pizzas’ - there is sure to be something on offer to suit everyone’s tastebuds. Because of its’ village location Caroline Bennet (proprietor) offers a delivery service within a five mile radius for all orders over £10. She told us “We want to try to help the local community who might not have access to transport or for people who want the more personal touch rather than using one of the big fast food chains” So whatever tempts your tastebuds why not pay Bromham Fish & Chip shop a visit for a traditional freshly cooked treat!

Classic cars at

Sharnbrook

ar shows may not be what you would normally associate with The Sharnbrook Hotel & Vesuvio, however since moving to their new premises on theA6/Park Lane in Sharnbrook, the Ciampi family have slowly become a local mecca for the car enthusiast.

to increase the car show franchise.

C

Ciro added, “by 2009 our Italian Car Day had expanded to accept Italian Bikes such as Ducati, MV Augusta, Bellini, Aprilia and vintage Lambretta & Vespa’s, this of course widened the appeal catapulting the success of the show further. In this time we also hosted several car clubs for their own AGM events and our ability to showcase our venue was attracting a lot of interest from car enthusiasts. We had to turn away people in their Porsche or Aston Martin from our Italian Car Day as it is exactly what it says on the tin ‘an Italian Car Day’, but because of this we decided to add another event to welcome owners and enthusiasts of non-Italian vehicles.”

This annual classic car show event returns this month giving local jalopy enthusiasts the opportunity to get their gleaming classics out of their garages and bring them along to let us all appreciate their beauty as well as nostalgia. The annual event attracts a great variety of Vintage, Americana, Classic and Sports Vehicles as well as Motorcycles. It was nearly five years ago in July 2007, that Ciro & Massimo Ciampi arranged their first car event exclusively for Italian Cars which was supported by the globally reputed AutoItalia magazine.

He continued “So in May 2010 we launched Classics at The Sharnbrook, which in turn was again another instant success. Our 1st Classics Show was as successful as our 3rd Italian Car Day!”

“Our first event was an opportunity for us to attract new visitors to the hotel as well as organise a gathering for likeminded individuals. We knew that Italian cars had a longstanding popularity and with attracting makes such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo we successfully hosted a vibrant yet intimate event that everybody enjoyed” explained Massimo.

Each year each event has grown and there are now 3 Annual Car Shows which are ‘Classics At The Sharnbrook’ on Sunday 13th May, ‘The Bedfordshire Italian Car & Bike Day’ on Sunday 24th June and ‘The Supercar Sunday’ on Sunday 9th September. Visitors who come along can choose to dine in VesuviO or The Amalfi Suite at lunchtime and take in the day’s live Grand Prix action or alternatively enjoy the Pig Roast & BBQ in the gardens.

The event inevitably grew annually with show cars increasing as well as public attendance swelling year on year, so they decided it was time 66

Magical

Marrakesh “ J “

Exciting, colourful, vibrant and shrouded in the mysteries of Arabia spices and you are expected to haggle, so never pay the first price asked. Most tourists flock to this area at night to breathe in the unique atmosphere with its acrobats, dancers, storytellers and snake charmers. It is also probably the most interesting place to eat as improvised ‘tent’ restaurants are set up in the evening, serving everything from fish to traditional Moroccan dishes like couscous, tagine and pigeon pie. This is best left to the more adventurous, as hygiene is not to our standards and travellers with delicate stomachs are warned to beware!! Moroccan cuisine is rightly celebrated and the French influence is reflected in the high standards in most of the hotels and restaurants. Although you will find nightclubs, folklore shows and cinemas throughout the city, everything else is a bit tame compared to The Medina Square.

ust 3½ hours flight time from the UK lies Morocco’s ‘Red Imperial City’ of Marrakesh. From humble beginnings in the 11th Century the modern city of Marrakesh offers a mystique all of its own and is the country’s prime tourist destination.

Comprising two distinctly different parts, the ‘new city’, planned by the French from the early 20th century has wide boulevards housing world class hotels with vast manicured gardens and inviting pools. A haven of peace and quiet in a busy bustling city. However in my opinion, by far the most interesting place is the old Moorish part of the city, with its famous Medina and the largest market square in Morocco, Djemaa el Fna Square, probably the busiest in Africa. With a myriad of souks it must be one of the most fascinating shopping spots in the world. Visitors are presented with a mind boggling array of handicrafts, rugs, perfumes, fabrics, leather goods, jewellery and

I visited Marrakesh last November for a three day travel conference. Although most of my time was taken up in the Palais Du Congress, I did manage to glance at a few of the hotels available to would-be visitors and there is a

68

Affinity Magazine May2012_Layout 1 copy 19/04/2012 12:50 Page 67

vast choice for any budget. From the Ancient Merchant Houses or Riads which have been converted to Boutique Hotels and Guest Houses, to a number of international hotel chains which have discovered the city’s charms. I was lucky enough to stay at La Mamounia, described by Sir Winston Churchill as ‘the loveliest spot in the world’. The newly refurbished luxury hotel dating back to 1923 remains to this day the most celebrated hotel in North Africa and is a haven of elegance within a walled oasis of orange groves and 100 year old olive trees. To enjoy a cocktail in the bar of La Mamounia is described by many to be a ‘must do’ for any visitor to the city. Unfortunately for many people a single cocktail here could break the bank! Even though it is a Muslim country alcohol is widely available so look out for the local wines, the best of which are red. Temperatures here vary considerably and whilst we did have a little rain, we also enjoyed pleasantly mild daytime temperatures. The best time to visit will depend on what you want to do. The summer is hot and dry, perfect for those looking for sunbathing opportunities by the pool, followed by exciting nights exploring the souks and markets of The Medina. During the winter months you can expect mild temperatures and a little rainfall, ideal for exploring the historic buildings such as the 12th Century Koutoubia Mosque or a round of golf on one of the internationally acclaimed courses. Local guides can be hired to show you around but may refuse to take tourists to the ‘cultural sights’ without including a visit to the Medina, as they receive substantial commission on purchases. Watch where you point your camera as the snake charmers and jugglers in the Square will expect a contribution if you take any snaps. However, if you do strike up a conversation with a local it is not unusual to be invited back to their home for dinner, as Moroccan hospitality is legendary and their generosity can be nothing short of astonishing. The city is framed by the High Atlas Mountains, which are snow covered at times and where it is possible to ski from Christmas to Easter. Hiking trips are popular and it is best to organise a Berber guide for a few days to discover spectacular scenery. Sir Richard Branson owns a Spa Retreat Hotel here, as the air is clean and the views are mesmerising. It is popular to combine a few days in the city with a few days in the mountains for a complete contrast.

Driving looks like a nightmare and tourists are advised to think twice before hiring a car here. Pushbikes, motorbikes and camels are in abundance and I will always remember seeing a motorcyclist with his Alsatian dog riding pillion, navigating the evening rush hour traffic! By far the best way to see the city is by horse-drawn carriage, called a caleche, - there are plenty about and very reasonably priced. There is a good network of buses and taxis as long as you negotiate the rate first. The prestigious golf clubs of the Palmeraie are 15 minutes drive away and are home to renowned golf courses and very luxurious hotels. Marrakesh used to be a retreat for hippies, rock stars and fashion designers in the 60s but these days there is much to encourage travellers of all ages and walks of life. An exciting, vibrant, mysterious city and one I intend to revisit to explore in more depth.

Tailormade breaks are available with flights from local airports. Call Sue Alexander of Eagle Travel 01234 348882

Readers questions I am nearly 50 and have been on my own for about nine years now, I meet men but for one reason or another, things don't work out, do you see me forever destined to be on my own or will I eventually meet someone and things will work out?

I have been having an affair with a married man for just over 10 years, he is a workaholic and never sees his wife because of the hours he works, he tells me that he loves me, but he says he won't leave his wife as he is too old to start again, he is so unhappy though and now has major health problems that he hasn't even told his wife about - do you see us eventually being together or am I kidding myself? Dianne

The cards tell me that you put too much into every relationship, turning yourself almost into a mother figure to try to fill every possible need of a partner, and you then end up resenting it when they treat you like a doormat, stepping over you to get on with the rest of their lives, seemingly without a care of how you feel. Your problem is that you don’t see yourself as worthwhile to them unless you are so giving, so why should they see you as any more worthwhile themselves. The cards suggest that you start doing things in life that you really want to do regardless of whether or not other people want you to. That way you will attract people to you that like the things you do and who you are, instead of who you pretend to be. The men that you attract at the moment are usually in need of healing, and once healed, move on. Go for a more sorted out kind of man. One who has no baggage or difficulties for you to sort out for him, who can then love you for who you are not what you can do for him, or how you can look after him. Then you can be equal and happy together. Yes, you do meet someone who attracts you who you are brave enough to go towards, he has dark hair with a touch of grey, and is wirily strong, He comes this year before the end of September, and has something to do with study, or teaching.

It depends on what you are expecting. If you are expecting him to love you, confide in you and be with you whenever he gets the chance you are not deluding yourself. If you think that he would destroy his wife’s view of him and his family’s attitude to him by breaking up their very long marriage and family home, then you are deluding yourself. He would be of the opinion that if ever anything happened to his wife and family it would be you he would be with. I have no doubt of his love for you, (or for her.) But he is not going to instigate it. The Tarot is completely non judgmental, and would advise you to ask yourself if you would be happier living as you are now, with love, or moving away from him, work and colleagues for what you assume that you should be wanting, and all that that ensues.

Smudging and clearance of negative energies

In this ‘New Age ‘of spirituality you will hear talk of Negative Energies and Negativity, the Clearance of, and protection against such effects; It can sound like gobbledegook, but makes sense when you look further into how it is believed to work.

The spiritual way is borrowed from the Native American Indians, and uses white sage, dried, bundled, and lit to smoke out or ‘Smudge’ the area, erasing the problem and getting ghostly and difficult energies to leave.

Vicious acts, hurt and misery have an intensity which pervades the air. We have all been in situations where you could literally cut the air with a knife, as the feelings of difficulty between people hangs between them, often even after the chief protagonists have gone.

The bundle of sage is lit, the flames wafted out and the stick is left to smoulder, Sometimes a wedge of feathers (The Native Americans would have used Eagle feathers) is used to waft the smoke in to all the corners. Every room of the home or workplace should be covered, and loose or rock salt scattered down drains and toilets to cleanse these areas.

This attitude settles within the surroundings, like miniscule settlings of dust or ‘smoke’ and invades brick, ground and surfaces with its unseen sense of hurt. Many people will go into a perfectly pristine new house and feel that they have to paint all the walls just to feel a sense of refreshed energy.

Many people also use crystals once the area has been smudged, they place them around the home, where salt lamps and candle holders are thought to absorb the energies as they emerge, helping to keep a clear space more healthy. Other stones which help in this way are smoky quartz, and black tourmaline.

The only downside comes when stories about her private life become front page news, Laura begins to distrust those closest to her, and her life starts to spiral dangerously out of control. About Last Night by Adele Parks 'I need you to say that I was with you.' For thirty years, best friends Steph and Pip have been through thick and thin. There's nothing they would not do for one another. Until these simple words change everything. Steph, eternally solid and dependable, is begging her friend to lie to the police as she's desperately trying to conceal not one but two scandalous secrets to protect her family. Pip, selfconsigned to the role of scatty hot-head, is overwhelmed; she's normally the one asking for help in a crisis. It's a big ask. So what would you do? How far would you go for your best friend?

Before I Go to Sleep by SJ Watson Christine wakes up every morning in an unfamiliar bed with an unfamiliar man. She looks in the mirror and sees an unfamiliar, middle- aged face. And every morning, the man she has woken up with must explain that he is Ben, he is her husband, she is forty-seven years old, and a terrible accident two decades earlier decimated her ability to form new memories. But it’s the phone call from a Dr. Nash, a neurologist who claims to be working with Christine without her husband’s knowledge, which directs her to her journal, hidden in the back of her closet. For the past few weeks, Christine has been recording her daily activities—tearful mornings with Ben, sessions with Dr. Nash, flashes of scenes from her former life—and rereading past entries, relearning the facts of her life as retold by the husband she is completely dependent upon. As the entries build up, Christine asks many questions. What was life like before the accident? Why did she and Ben never have a child? What has happened to Christine’s best friend? And what exactly was the horrific accident that caused such a profound loss of memory? Every day, Christine must begin again the reconstruction of her past. And the closer she gets to the truth, the more un-believable it seems.

I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella I've lost it! ( The only thing in the world I wasn't supposed to lose. My engagement ring. It's been in Magnus' family for three generations. And now, the very same day his parents are coming, I've lost it. The very same day. Do not hyperventilate, Poppy. Stay positive!! :) A couple of glasses of bubbly with the girls at a charity do and Poppy's life has gone into meltdown. Not only has she lost her engagement ring, but in the panic that followed, she's lost her phone too. As she paces shakily round the hotel foyer she spots an abandoned phone in a bin. Finders keepers! Now she can leave a number with the hotel staff. It was meant to be! Except the phone's owner, businessman Sam Roxton, doesn't agree. He wants his phone back, and doesn't appreciate Poppy reading all his messages and wading into his personal life. As Poppy juggles wedding preparations, phone messages and hiding her left hand from Magnus and his parents, can things get any more tangled?
