Midlife Madness The Evils of Exercise
I
know I am not getting any younger, but I do still want to keep in shape. Exercise not only helps, but means I can eat more, obviously, because if I exercise I burn calories. But like so many things as I get older it seems to become harder. I used to enjoy running, but frankly I find it hurts my knees now (lots of my joint seem prone to unexpected, completely unwelcome, aching). So I thought joining a gym would be a good plan. Well first let me tell you I was shocked by the price but I justified this – after all it will be good for me and help keep me young and beautiful!
good for my flexibility. Well not sure about increasing flexibility but it was nice and calm – especially the relaxation at the end. Apparently they woke me up 2 hours after the end of class because they needed to lock up and go home. I do hope I didn’t snore. But forgetting the gym one thing I have always loved is walking and with my handy iphone app I can monitor the calories I burn and it seems a good way of burning calories, I don’t get too sweaty, I don’t even need cool gear to do it and I can even save money by choosing to walk somewhere rather than take the car.
There were a few things I hadn’t bargained on however. First everyone seemed so young and clearly they had such perfect bodies they had no need to be in a gym. Maybe someone needs to start a gym for the folk who haven’t got perfect bodies ….yet. How come some women can turn up looking beautiful in designer gear, full make up and slick hair do’s then exercise and still look beautiful. Or maybe what I should ask is why can’t I. Okay I know my gym wear is dated, but that apart when I exercise I sweat (doesn’t everyone); my face goes a shade a bit like beetroot. However I try to fix my hair it fails and by the end I look like I have been dragged through a hedge backwards, and if I do have make up on my sweating means it all runs, especially the mascara, so I look a bit like a vampire who hasn’t seen the light of day for a while.
What can possibly be the problem with that? Well firstly the weather, I love walking but not in pouring rain, bitter cold, fog, wind, hail, sleet or snow – so that’s several month of the year ruled out! Secondly dogs – I am simply a bit of a coward and when a great big rottweiler comes bounding up to me I nearly have a heart attack, and I am totally unconvinced by the owner’s reassurances that I needn’t worry and they are just being friendly!!! But the worst problem is, sadly, age related. I seem to need to go to the loo far more frequently than before and with much greater urgency, especially after a coffee. It simply isn’t fun trying to walk while crossing your legs and making absolutely sure you don’t sneeze or cough or the results could be disastrous. Maybe I should just forget about exercise – pass the wine and choccies someone?
Then when I staggered back to the changing rooms following my non nonsense stint on the treadmill, rowing machine and cross trainer, the room was full of young, slim, shapely women in various states of undress, chatting amicably while applying body option to various pert …..parts while naked. Is it necessary, really, or am I just a bit of a prude? It might be the stuff of male fantasies but it did nothing for my gym experience other than put me off. So on my next visit I thought I would try some classes. Zumba was fun and it got my heart beating fast but when I turned the wrong way and knocked over the young girl next to me, who promptly fell and caught the cable for the sound system, a simple sorry didn’t seem to cut it with 20 disgruntled ‘Zumbees’, not to mention the irate teacher. I thought Yoga may be calmer and

Trendy Tresses A
s summer fast approaches and there are BBQ’s and weddings galore, what better way to prepare than to brush up on the best trends and styles out there for your hair.
chic look. Those with short hair, it’s time to accessorize! Grab colourful scarves and playful clips to dress hair up, cute 60’s styles were a big hit at Fashion Week. If you have slightly longer hair try weaving scarves through a plait or twist to add interest to a hairstyle.
Braids and plaits are still hugely popular this year, so it’s time to get in some practice! Start small and try a simple three-strand plait, then begin experimenting. The great thing about the braid trend is that texture is huge this season, meaning you can get away with the odd mistake or flyaway hair. Just tell anyone who asks that you are working a London Fashion Week look.
Fancy a fringe? Sweeping or the fashion forward supershort, along with eye-skimming fringes have all been spotted on celebs and catwalk models. Pick yours to suit your face shape and use a small barrel brush to blow dry your fringe into place and finish with some hairspray to hold. Why not go for a heavy fringe that parts in the middle? Alexa Chung and Caroline Flack have been spotted with the fringe which gives an effortless air of cool. Inspired no doubt by the timeless style of Brigitte Bardot, the ‘undone-done’ look which gives ladies that aren’t masters of their hair the chance to wear an up do a little messy and still look great. Hair can be left without a polished finish, helping to give it a softer more romantic look.
The London Fashion Week catwalks were divided between very low maintenance hair, with little product use and the higher impact ‘wet look’ styling. Wet look styles, such as a slicked back bun, or gelled finger waves look fantastic on holiday hair - if you find your hair goes frizzy in hotter climates it’s well worth considering a look that is simple to recreate and looks great. Look out for products that contain UV protectants to help keep hair safe whilst in the sun. Those that prefer the casual approach to hair, make sure hair is kept in top condition by regularly using a hair mask or treatment. The lowmaintenance look meant the strengtheners were ditched, so work with your hairs’ natural texture and movement. You can enhance natural texture by using a sea-salt spray or spray wax, avoid the root and concentrate on the mid-lengths and ends.
Colour is all about creating your own personal hue, and being brave. The dip-dye bandwagon is still in town, and with temporary sprays and semi-permanent ranges from Lee Stafford and Schwarzkopf you can get the look without the commitment. So either work a high-impact look or leave things looser for a textured finish, two completely different but very workable trends that will look great this summer! For more hair tips from Kelly visit our hair clinic at www.affinitymag.co.uk Kelly gay www.klghairadvice.com
The simple ponytail is an easy style to recreate and was seen in a number of designer’s catwalks. Keep yours low and straight, and finish with a little serum for a glossy, 12

H
ere at Affinity we love a little pampering so when The Day Spa at Whittlebury Hall Hotel released a new package for Spring/Summer (well we can pretend the sun is shining!) which includes full use of the Heat and Ice Experiences, Spa and Leisure Club, a two course buffet lunch and TWO treatments all from ÂŁ99 per person, it sounded too good to miss, so we felt (in the name of research for our readers) we had to go and try it out.
Spring Sensation
We took advantage of the extensive experiences on offer within the Heat and Ice area, including the salt steam room, traditional sauna, caladrium and hydro pool before heading off for our two course buffet lunch, which as always was delicious. After lunch it was time for our treatments, a Clarins Aromatic Balancer Facial for me. This facial is pure luxury whatever your skin condition, it is customised to you and will rebalance and coax your skin back to looking gorgeous. My skin was slightly dehydrated so a hydra quench mask was one of the products used, this was 50 minutes of relaxing indulgence and I came out feeling rejuvenated with gorgeous glowing skin. Whilst I was having my facial my husband was experiencing an Indian Head massage, which he said was just wonderful and so de-stressing he fell asleep. 14
Affinity May 2013 _Layout 1 copy 17/04/2013 19:45 Page 13
For our second treatment both of us had chosen the ‘Day Spa Signature Massage’ which we enjoyed in a dual treatment room. This is a body massage that is designed to deliver relaxation and enhance well-being and includes legs, arms, a soothing back, neck and shoulder massage. My therapist’s touch was just perfect, the ESPA soothing body oil was massaged into my body leaving me feeling completely relaxed in body and mind - simply bliss! After the pure heaven of our treatments we were left to enjoy the facilities some more; I just relaxed by the pool, but my husband was a little more adventurous and chilled in the sauna. What a truly tranquil day that left us both feeling completely refreshed and rested. If you want to escape for the day and experience some pampering with this exclusive ‘Day Spa Whittlebury Day Package and Seasonal Treatment Choices,’ then visit their website or give them a call. www.whittleburyhall.co.uk

The Role of Detoxification in
Good Health
I
t always worries me when I see so many newspapers and magazine articles encouraging detoxification immediately after Christmas, as an antidote to over indulgence during the Christmas break. The winter months are really not the time to detox the body. This is the time to build-up the body’s reserves, when we need hearty nourishing food to cope with the cold weather - particularly this year when we have experienced such a cold and protracted winter. Detoxification can weaken the body’s defences and lay the body open to opportunistic infections and colds and chest infections. In Ayurveda late spring or early autumn are seen as the ideal times to detoxify the body, from the excesses and sluggishness developed over the winter and heat over the summer. If carried out now a spring clean of the body will be far more effective than most measures we take in early January. Whilst current medical opinion generally seems to believe the body has the natural capacity to detoxify itself, Ayurveda believes that regular detoxification is the cornerstone to a long and healthy life and has a rejuvenative effect on the body, if done correctly.
However, you can do a gentle and more ad-hoc detox at any time by including some of these measures in your daily regime: • Increase your intake of warm water and drink a herbal tea such as dandelion, burdock and artichoke to start the process of cleansing the liver and kidneys.
Ayurveda’s belief in detoxification is underpinned by the fundamental belief that toxins – primarily from an irregular lifestyle, poor digestion, and nutritional deficiencies, along with emotional stress, anxiety, anger and depression - are the root illness. These two factors cause imbalances in the body’s natural constitution which, if it becomes chronic, eventually results in illness.
• Starting the day with a cup of fresh ginger tea with lemon to kindle the digestive fire. • Use a skin brush first thing before a shower to help the skin with its’ role of detoxifying the body. An Ayurvedic detoxification needs preparation and planning with supervision and support and lasts for 10 days. Preparation – by giving-up alcohol, coffee and simple carbs such as biscuits, cakes and chocolate and eating a simple diet for at least three days with herbs and spices. The actual cleansing includes taking oils internally, massages, a prescribed diet and various other measures to make the cleansing process as effective as possible and to achieve the desired result. After the detoxification is complete, herbs and diet are given to replenish and rejuvenate the body and strengthen the immune system.
Detoxification is great for a wide variety of complaints, including all digestive complaints, skin problems, such as eczema, acne, psoriasis, high cholesterol and blood pressure, arthritis, diabetes, stress and weight gain. Detoxification can both help to resolve these health problems and act as a preventative for further problems later on. Some of the benefits include: • Improved immunity with fewer coughs, colds and infections. • Reduction in fatigue and lethargy
However, please seek professional advice before under taking any detoxification programme. It’s not suitable for everyone and should be avoided during a period of intense stress, or following serious illness, as we need some strength to cope with a detoxification regime.
• Relief from stress which gives calmness, clarity and emotional balance • Increased vitality and energy and an added healthy glow, which your friends and family will notice – your skin will glow and your eyes sparkle. 16

The Art of Plucking Gorgeously Groomed Brows to be Proud of
Perfect the art of ‘plucking’ and create beautiful brows that enhance your eyes and shape your face with these top tips from Tweezerit!:
Prepare Help make hair removal easier and less painful by showering or bathing before you start to tweeze your brows. If this isn’t possible then wash your brow area with a warm cloth Get Started Always try to follow the natural contours of your face when shaping your brow, so that the final result looks more natural. Avoid trying to create arches that don’t exist naturally on your face A good tip is to draw around your eyebrows with eyeliner or concealer and then pluck to that shape You can add definition and shape to your brow by tweezing more at the outside than the inside of your eyebrow
To avoid this try to tweezer last thing at night so you wake up with a perfect brow in the morning Remember to always clean your tweezers after use and store in a dry place. To transform your brows you need a good pair of tweezers. We love the new chic and stylish tweezers from Tweezerit, designed for sheer precision every time, each pair has been made using premium quality stainless steel and hand finished by professionals, to last a lifetime. Tweezerit! has three fabulous style options, each with built in spring action, to suit your plucking preference and a chip protector to protect them when not in use. These deluxe tweezers are able to cope with even the most delicate of jobs and, as they’re light weight too, are perfect for use at home or on-the-go. With the extensive ranges it will be hard to choose between them. Prices start from £21.49.
Try not to get over-enthusiastic in your middle brow area as eyebrows that are more than 3cm apart can look odd Remember, if you have never shaped your eyebrows before, we recommend that you see a professional to start with. That way, you will simply be tidying when you tweeze rather than trying to create a new eyebrow shape How to Pluck: Always pluck in the direction of hair growth Alternate brows to make sure they match After Care/After Tweezing: Your brow area could be sore and possibly a bit red, so allow time for the irritation to clear before going out
For more information on Tweezerit! tweezers or to order please visit www.tweezerit.co.uk.

BHRTis here
I
The Natural Vitality Clinic
t’s been a big hit in America over the past few years with the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell and Cybil Shepherd to name but a few, singing it’s praises and now BHRT is on offer right on your doorstep at The Natural Vitality Clinic in the rural village of Harrold in Bedfordshire.
But what is BHRT? I hear you ask – It stands for Bioidentical Hormone Therapy which is an alternative to the usual HRT that is offered to the majority of women when they reach the menopause. As men and women age their hormone levels decline, causing an imbalance in the body which in turn has a profound effect on moods, how they feel and listen to people, their thinking performance, sleeping patterns, motivation, decision making and libido. BHRT replenishes the body with natural hormones to make up for the ones that have been lost, thus restoring a persons balance, bringing significant health benefits and helping to improve the quality of their life. They are naturally produced and structurally identical to our own hormones. They are derived from Diosgenin – found in soya beans and yams and have no adverse side effects, unlike HRT which is basically one size fits all – BHRT supplements are tailored to an individual’s hormone levels, ensuring that they receive the correct amount that is just right for them. Gill Wellings who runs The Natural Vitality Clinic along with Dr. Susan Sarangapani told us “I have been using BHRT since 2009 and seeing how much it improved my overall well being, vitality and health I felt more people,
men as well as women, needed to know that there was something natural out there that could help them; they don’t have to suffer in silence” She continued “It’s a very simple process, you come along for a blood test which will provide us with a wealth of information regarding your individual hormone levels and will give us a comprehensive picture of your present imbalances. “ Dr Susan adds “I will then have a look at your results and prescribe a carefully calibrated dose of Bio-identical Hormones to take in the form of a cream, so they are absorbed into the blood stream via the skin or as a lozenger via the mouth. It is not a one pill suits all problems solution, it is personal to each patients individual needs. We will then continue to monitor you and how well your hormone therapy is working , allowing for any fluctuations and, therefore, we are able to make any adjustments that are necessary to you.” Dr. Susan Sarangapani is a facial plastic surgeon, she is an expert in Botox and Tear Trough fillers . She trained in Bio identical Hormones through working closely with Dr Marion Gluck in London. Marion Gluck is the UKs leading pioneer in BHRT, so if you pay the Natural Vitality Clinic a visit you know you’ll be in expert hands. There is absolutely no reason to suffer in silence anymore, contact The Natural Vitality Clinic who will be happy to help you change your life.

What’s Hot and What’s Not! As I am writing this snow flakes are dropping on my window and children are outside building a snowman, this sounds like a lovely scene but it’s APRIL! We’re not meant to have snow in April, so in a quest to cheer myself up and to heat things up a bit I thought I’d do a ‘what’s HOT and what’s not’ in the world of health and fitness.
What’s HOT! Vibram Five Fingers The human foot is a biomechanical marvel. If we were to ‘build’ a foot from scratch it would take years of research and development and even then we would still not get it right. The way the foot is created helps us to absorb impact, increase speed, decrease speed, control balance and move in any direction we wish.
What’s NOT!
A great way to look after our feet is to train them how to work properly, we can do this by wearing shoes that allow the foot to be free yet supported where necessary, the perfect shoe for this is the Vibram Five Fingers. This unique shoe protects the soles of the feet whilst allowing each toe to move freely. They give the arch of the foot just enough support to keep the foot from flattening too much but help train the arches to work harder to help keep the absorption of impact strong.
Faddy celebrity diets. Don’t get me wrong some celebrities have top trainers and top nutrition coaches and the results speak for themselves, but when you get celebrities harping on about ‘this a-maz-ing detox plan’ they’re following that requires them to eat raw chili seeds, baby food and cabbage soup all day long, I’m afraid I’m not sold and nor should you be. There are effective detox plans available but these should be done under professional supervision and not from a glossy magazine article. Chances are you will lose weight doing some kind of extreme diet plan but you are not losing fat, you are losing water and muscle as a result of glycogen depletion and muscle tissue breakdown. And since extreme calorie restriction can dramatically slow down your metabolism you may end up gaining more weight than you started off with beforehand.
I know they look a little strange and I must admit they don’t look very comfortable but believe me they are. They are literally like wearing a pair of slippers. They can be worn for your weights work out, running, climbing, yoga, any activity really. They have a non-slip sole that protects the base of your foot and an easy elastic pull tab so they can be put on in an instant. www.vibramfivefingers.uk.com 24

What’s HOT! BPA Free bottles Bisphenol A is used to make lots of different plastic products ranging from drinks bottles, sports equipment and even CDs. Recent studies have shown that it exhibits hormone like properties which can be harmful to human beings. Canada has declared BPA a toxic substance with other countries likely to follow suit. The best way to avoid BPA is to use a BPA free water bottle for your daily drinks and to avoid food goods packed in plastic and definitely don’t heat your meals in any kind of plastic - if you are going to eat processed foods or microwave foods then put it onto a glass or ceramic plate before heating it.
What’s NOT! Running for weight loss
What’s HOT!
I know this is rather sweeping statement but having spent the last 7 years doing personal training I have spoken to so many people who think that the best way to lose weight is to run whether you like running or not. Yes, running will help you lose weight BUT (and it’s a big but) there are more effective ways and certainly more enjoyable ways (if you don’t like running that is!) High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) would be best. This is short sharp bursts of high intensity exercise performed over a short workout time. 20 minutes is enough of this type of training....perfect for those of you with a tight packed schedule.
Fish Oils They are a wonder ‘drug’ and are available in most health food shops and even some supermarkets. A simple capsule of fish oil can have numerous positive effects on your body, not just for vanity but for your health too. Fish oils play a part in memory and cognitive function, decreasing blood pressure, increasing serotonin the happy neurotransmitter, decreasing fat storage and helping fight stress to name but a few! Always look for a good quality fish oil with a high level of EPA and DHA. Carlson Labs is a very high quality fish oil and is available online in capsule or liquid form.

Ask Sue...
Sue has over 30 years experience in the psychic field and is an authority on crystals and psychic energy, and is a world renowned Tarot reader and teacher!
I
have been on my own for over nine years now and have had quite a few relationships but for one reason or another they don't work out. I have now reached 50 years of age and had given up on finding anyone, but recently I met the most wonderful man via a dating website, he seems to be everything I want in a man but I am scared because I have had so many relationships go wrong. Do you see a future for me with this man and is there any advice on things I should/should not be doing? I await your answer. Thank you Susie Hi Susie, This man is looking for love too, but is like you, wary. You and him have many things which are so similar when it comes to being let down and taken for granted. In you he has found someone that he wants to take time in getting to know, so don't rush him. He respects honesty, but doesn't need to know everything at once, take your time, and he will commit in his own time as long as he doesn't feel pressured. You are both aiming at the same thing , walk alongside each other and you will reach it and its happiness together. You don't, either of you, need to be in control, just walking together hand in hand will get you there. Learn to look up to your dream, rather than at old pitfalls. He is a very different man to others that you have ever known.
I
got made redundant last year and haven't managed to find another job despite applying for loads. I have been for interviews, presentations etc. but nothing ever came from any of them and I never heard back from the companies. I recently started a part time sales job, I love it because there is none of the big pressure on me like there was in my previous job. I just want to know if you see me being successful at this and will I be able to make a decent wage from it. Thank you Nadine HI Nadine, One of the biggest things in sales is to love what you are doing, you have a head start because you love meeting people, and if you genuinely believe that you can help them with anything they buy from you, you 28
will go from strength to strength. You can earn good money, but of course you will also have times when you aren't on the ball and things are more difficult. These times will be few and far between if you can infect people with your happy spirit. You have every chance of making a good livelihood, and when you prove yourself, you may well find part time turns to full time. Keep upbeat, listen to your clients and you will do well. I pulled the World card, the Moon and the Wheel of Fortune for you, so this shows that everything is possible, you will have a few ups and downs , but everything will come right for you, if you keep on this path.
I
am normally a very upbeat positive happy person but recently I can't seem to shake off the feeling of sadness and doom and gloom. I have my own business that I started a few years ago, it is not growing at the rate I was hoping and I am becoming disheartened. I know the potential is there it just seems I hit an obstacle wherever I turn. What do you see happening. Thank you Fiona. F
HI Fiona, to have a business grow at all is a miracle in today's triple dip depressional climate; so you should give yourself a pat of the back, not a blow to the head. If you hang on in there the signs are that growth comes more easily next year and within the next three years, to the point that you would have expected this year had everything been as it should have been. Doom and gloom have their place, and for you it seems just a time for gathering yourself together, and getting yourself to your usual bright strength , - which seems far easier now that spring is here. The cards also suggest a bit of a revamp of your companies web image, as it may have been overlooked, recently. You are shown as the high priestess , which shows you as a bit of a perfectionist by nature you can make this work for you, as others are likely to give less for the money than you do. Stop at the First Hurdle?
Not Us! O
ne minute you’re happily veering towards your goal then - WHAM! A surprise hurdle is thrown in your path, so how do you get back on track?
We need to remember we are capable of doing amazing things—and even more if we can grow through our challenges.
Like nature and the seasons, the caterpillar and the butterfly, the tadpole and the frog, there’s no turning back, there’s no putting your head in the sand to pretend it isn’t happening. We need to acknowledge that through the tough times, the miracles of transformation happen, and we can flourish on the other side.
From small setbacks such as a last minute work commitment forcing you to miss your friend’s party, right up to the big world rocking upsets, such as discovering your partner is leaving you - we’ve all experienced gut wrenching disappointment and devastation, however if we take these hurdles and turn them into opportunities, there may be no end to what we can accomplish.
No one is immune to setbacks. If you have one you need to recognise the problem. By doing this you can start the process of transformation, for it is on the other side of the setback that we realise we are not going to be the same person we were before…………We are going to be wiser, stronger, and better for it!
So just how do you stop an obstacle that’s been placed in your path from overwhelming you and making it impossible to move forward?
32
Affinity May 2013 _Layout 1 copy 17/04/2013 19:51 Page 31
Believe in yourself While this may be easier said than done, it is important that you believe in your own potential. Just because something didn’t turn out exactly the way you intended doesn’t mean that you failed. Believe in your own ability. Take action, NOW Don’t let a minor obstacle stop you cold. Pick yourself up and decide what has to be done to prevent this obstacle from being a major barrier. No matter how inconsequential the action, a step forward can help you put everything into perspective and move forward. According to psychologist, Professor Stephen Joseph “Upsetting as life’s obstacles can be, if they’re handled the right way they can ultimately make you stronger.” For the last twenty years psychologists have focused almost exclusively on how traumatic events can lead to anxiety and depression, but what has become apparent in more recent research is how those negative emotional states can often be the engine for creating personal transformations. It’s called post traumatic growth and means we can become wiser, more mature and can often find more perspectives in life.” There are times when we all find ourselves following a career path or a life trajectory that isn’t totally right for us and sometimes it takes the scaffolding falling down to give us the opportunity to build new foundations that are much better suited to our long term happiness. Overcoming obstacles is the key… It doesn’t matter how small the success, make sure that you celebrate and revel in your 33
accomplishment. Whether you believe it or not, this helps you stay motivated, even when you’re facing a new obstacle. Don’t let the smallest challenge that you have overcome go unrewarded, the more you pay attention to the little things, the more likely you will be to have the fight in you for the bigger things. Motivation isn’t something that most of us think very much about. In fact, most of us tend to think that we either are motivated or we’re not. However, if we take the time to evaluate how we handle crisis, obstacles, and how we celebrate our successes, it is highly likely that we’ll find that the more success we find the more motivated we are going to be. Whilst we should always do our level best to achieve the goals that we set for ourselves, sometimes we forget that we are human and, as humans, we sometimes stumble on our path to success but can still overcome obstacles. We need to give ourselves time. Just as we need to allow time for wounds and broken hearts to mend, we need to allow ourselves time to overcome our setbacks. Impatience only makes them harder and longer than they need to be. We are in such a hurry to fix our problems and move on; usually this impatience is a pattern that overflows into other areas of our life. Yes we are all going to deal with setbacks in life, but we can overcome them if we see them as part of a bigger life picture, and commit to seeing them through from start to finish. Remember that this setback won’t stop you from being who you want to be and doing what you want to do.
“
“
Evaluate and assess Before you start torturing yourself because you failed to meet a goal, take a look at your overall plan and make sure it was realistic. Did you set yourself up for failure? All too often, we set goals that are simply not realistic. Remember, successful goal setting starts with setting realistic goals that can be measured, evaluated and achieved.
Breakdowns can create breakthroughs. Things fall apart so things can fall together

Afternoon Delight… Why do our sugary cravings always strike at 4pm?
I
t’s 4pm, you’ve got an inbox that’s bursting at the seams, a to-do list longer than your morning commute, but all you want to do is devour an entire packet of biscuits in an effort to stay awake.
Overwhelming food cravings is the culprit behind most broken diets. But why does this sweet treat urge always seem to hit us at around 4pm? And what can we do to curb these calorific cravings? We enlist the help of nutritional experts Lorna Driver-Davies, Nutri Centre Nutritional Therapist and Dr Marilyn Glenville Phd, the
UK’s leading nutritionist to help explain this 4pm food phenomenon and offer us some healthy snack solutions. According to Lorna ‘’When we are tired, we tend to make poorer food choices, wanting a quick sweet fix to perk us up. This can occur most often in the afternoon when cortisol levels can take a natural dip (cortisol is a hormone naturally produced by the adrenal glands that fluctuates throughout the day) and when this dip occurs, we may feel more tired as cortisol normally gives us a feeling of energy.’’
Affinity May 2013 _Layout 1 copy 17/04/2013 19:51 Page 33
Sweet Fix We shouldn’t feel too guilty as we reach for that chocolate bar, according to Lorna ‘’Wanting sweet foods in particular, may also be connected to possible imbalances in blood sugar. If your blood sugar goes up and down throughout the day; this will affect your food choices.’’ Marilyn explains why we feel the need for a quick ‘sweet fix’, ‘‘as you eat your blood sugar (glucose) rises in response to the food. The higher and quicker it rises, the more insulin has to be produced by your pancreas. The higher your blood sugar goes up, the lower it crashes down afterwards. This crash will also occur if you leave longer than three hours between eating. At the drop, your body will send you off for a quick fix, like a bar of chocolate or a cup of tea and biscuit, because it needs to lift the blood sugar up again.’’
Make your breakfast work for you! ‘’Eating a healthy breakfast which contains protein as well as carbohydrates, and continuing this combination alongside vegetables throughout the day, will help to support a steady flow of blood sugar. This means that by the time you get to 4pm, your blood sugar should not have dropped so much that you need that instant sweet fix. Smoked fish, salad and brown rice for lunch and nuts with fruit for snacks will help keep those afternoon cravings at bay,’’ explains Lorna.
Blood sugar rollercoaster Fluctuating glucose levels can be harmful for our health. The rollercoaster of glycemic highs and lows is not good for our general health. If over time, you become insulin resistant, where more and more insulin is being produced by the pancreas, but the insulin receptors in your cells do not respond effectively to it, then this can increase your risk of diabetes and high blood pressure.
Food for thought Emotions and mood play a part in sweet cravings too. Lorna tells us how ‘’Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that helps control the brain's reward and pleasure centres. Levels may fluctuate throughout the day but when we want sweet foods, cakes, biscuits, coffee, tea and even a cigarette (for some) this can be an indication that natural levels of dopamine have diminished. Also, if you do eat sweet foods such as chocolate, dopamine will be elevated for a short period of time but very soon after that, you will be looking for a dopamine ‘fix’ again which means more chocolate or other sweet foods. ‘’ Super Cortisol Support with Relora by NOW, £31.95 for a month’s supply from www.nutricentre.com is a herbal and nutritional formula designed to support healthy adrenal function and maintain healthy cortisol levels.
Want to get off the ride? Try taking a natural nutritional supplement that can help to balance out your blood sugar levels. Diabain’s Inusol £9.99 for a months supply, available from www.diabain.com, is a herbal remedy made from a scientific blend of 8 natural nutrients and minerals that can help to control blood sugar levels and is free of any harmful chemicals. Sleep salvation ‘’If you get 8 hours sleep you have a better chance of waking up more refreshed, which in turn can make you feel less tired in the afternoon. It’s breaking the cycle of going to bed late and waking up tired that’s important. In addition, research has shown that the less sleep we get, the less of a hormone called leptin we produce. With less leptin, we can feel hungrier as leptin is involved with appetite control’’ explains Lorna.
Curb food cravings, with Lorna’s Fab Four Tips Try to be in bed by 10pm and asleep by 11pm. Cortisol may be better regulated throughout the day if you go to bed before midnight.
Marilyn advises sex and magnesium for a good night’s sleep ‘’Magnesium is known as nature’s tranquillizer and will help with sleep problems, in addition sex can help you go to sleep by relaxing you and releasing tension.’’ If you want to up your magnesium intake try BioCare’s Magnesium Taurate, £14.15 for a month’s supply from www.biocare.co.uk; it contributes to a reduction in tiredness and fatigue, whilst maintaining normal energy metabolism.
Do not use a computer, tablet or bright light display phones after 10pm, as the blue light that these devices omit, disrupt another hormone called melatonin, which we need to help us feel sleepy. Eat a handful of nuts in the afternoon as these contain proteins required for the production of neurotransmitters such as dopamine. Make sure you eat protein with your breakfast, such as free-range eggs on wholegrain toast, so that you can enable your brain to make the right amount of chemicals to support your mood. 35

Our Body’s Energy W
hen we think of energy we usually think of it in relation to either activity or exercise, (will I have enough energy to do a particular task) or in relation to the food we take in, often here we think of energy in terms of calories. But energy is the building block of all matter, quite simply, what we don’t always realise is that we ARE energy. Energy is in us all and surrounds us all.
All a bit complicated I know but the important point is that energy is in each of us and it is in all things. Also energy does not stay still it can move. Energy flows around our body’s and energy flows around the world. Energy within our body flows along ‘meridians’, these meridians affect every organ and physiological system that we have. They are invisible but are a kind of energy bloodstream within the body. Along these meridians there are also certain ‘points’ where the flow of energy is more accessible and can be stimulated by touch (acupressure) or needles (acupuncture).
“The Einstein equation was simply a recipe for the amount of energy necessary to create the appearance of mass. It means there aren’t two fundamental physical entities, something material and another immaterial – but only one: energy. Everything in your world, anything you hold in your hand, no matter how dense, how heavy, how large, on its most fundamental level boils down to a collection of electric charges interacting with a background sea of electromagnetic and other energetic fields – a kind of electromagnetic drag force.”
These are not new theories but have been known, documented and used in some cultures for centuries. In Japan this energy is called Ki (as in Reiki healing) , the Chinese call it Chi and in Indian Yoga it is known as Prana.
B.Haisch – reference taken from The Field, Lynn McTaggert
36
What is relatively new in our society however, is the understanding that disruptions in the flow of energy
Affinity May 2013 _Layout 1 copy 17/04/2013 19:51 Page 35
can cause ‘blockages’. Disruption in energy flow can be caused by traumatic events and negative thoughts and experiences. Similarly negative emotions, distress and even physical symptoms can be caused by disruption in the energy flow within the body and the resultant ‘blockages’.
In the UK tapping is usually done by the individual on themselves, it is a simple technique to learn and has the advantage of empowering the individual – healing is not because of another but simply the individual themselves being able to release their own negative emotions rebalance energy and ‘feel’ better.
When the flow of energy is disrupted in people, some parts of the body experience a shortage of energy and others too much. Because dramatic events in our life, like trauma, are loaded with strong negative emotions, it is often difficult to process and release them all. We may feel overwhelmed and unable to handle them.
Another important aspect of tapping technique is the use of positive affirmations – again this is nothing new, in fact we often ‘give ourselves a talking to’ and many people will repeat positive affirmations for themselves or others. In tapping these affirmations are spoken while also ‘tapping’ on the various points and it can have some dramatic effects.
Often the response is simply to squash down these emotions but that disrupts our energy flow – we haven’t really dealt with the emotion, we’ve simply tried to put it away. But what happens is the emotion tends to resurface when a similar event happens and the whole cycle happens again, until eventually like an overloaded computer – we will ‘crash’.
In essence, EFT (tapping)is an emotional version of acupuncture wherein we stimulate certain meridian points by tapping on them with our fingertips. This addresses the true cause for emotional issues (unbalanced energy meridians).Properly done, this frequently reduces the therapeutic process from months or years down to hours or minutes. And, since emotional stress can contribute to pain, disease and physical ailments, we often find that EFT provides astonishing physical relief.”
Balancing the energy Recently there has been a marked increase in the therapeutic and motivational use of ‘energy medicine’. One of the most popular methods is the Emotional Freedom Technique of Tapping which has been used to manage stress, anxiety, addictions, phobias and physical symptoms. Tapping has also been used to overcome ‘limiting’ beliefs. It has been used within businesses and sports, and is a common tool for life and motivational coaches.
Gary Craig EFT ‘founder’
Does it work? This is a relatively new field in Western cultures, so research is a bit limited, however brain imaging studies indicate that it can effectively change the energy flow within the brain. A number of other studies have been carried out which indicate that generally this is an effective method for reducing anxiety. A summary of some of these studies can be found by using the link below. http://www.thrivingnow.com/summary-of-eftresearch/
In essence it works by tapping to release negative emotions and therefore clear the energy blocks that have been created, allowing energy to flow more freely around the body. EFT tapping is a form of psychological acupressure based on the ancient principles of acupuncture. Instead of needles, EFT combines gentle tapping on key acupuncture points while focusing your thoughts on pain, uncomfortable emotions, memories, cravings or any other problem. EFT is a complimentary therapy that helps the body to re-balance itself, and accelerates healing.
But personally I would favor a more pragmatic approach. People who struggle with self-confidence or self-esteem, those who suffer from stress or anxiety, those who have fears, phobias and addictions that make their life difficult or those who have experienced traumatic events, all have on thing in common – they want to feel better. They want their symptoms to ease. So if a therapy exists that is simple, non-invasive and which others have found effective, many are inclined simply to give it a go.
Quoted on website EFT for positive living
We know as humans that touch is terribly important to us. We hug people we love, we will rub our forehead if we have a headache we will soothe children and babies by stroking or patting them. There is nothing unusual about touching for comfort. We also know there are certain ‘points’ on the body that link to energy meridians. By simply tapping on these points the body’s energy can be ‘rebalanced’.

Delightful dining at the

W
ith its stunning location overlooking the River Great Ouse in Bedford is the 18thcentury Swan Hotel full of character and history and having recently undergone a major refurbishment of its River Room Restaurant. With its exciting new menu this is an ideal location for a special occasion, business meeting, a get together with family or friends or a romantic meal for just the two of you. We went along to try the new menu for ourselves and decided to combine it with an overnight stay in one of the suites - pure luxury and indulgence and highly recommended. We relaxed with a drink whilst making our menu choices which started with smoked haddock rarebit tart and pork & chicken pie with piccalilli and crusty bread, both dishes are created using the finest and freshest local ingredients and this certainly showed in the taste which was impressive and certainly tantalised our tastebuds. Our main courses were just as appetising, seared sea bass fillet with lobster sauce, warm fennel salad and lynonnaise potatoes the sea bass was fresh, soft and full of flavour the fennel salad proving the perfect accompaniment. Our other choice was salmon & crab fishcakes with tartar sauce and hand cut chips, the fishcakes were full of fish and had an assortment of flavours that seeped through to delight – delicious! I couldn’t leave without indulging my sweet tooth with one of the tempting desserts. Profiteroles with warm chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream was my choice – the taste didn’t disappoint and the portion size certainly generous. Traditional Spotted dick and custard was my husband’s choice soft and moist with custard that was delicious -desserts were a big hit. The service was faultless, the food delightful and the surroundings perfect what more could you wish for? Maybe a little sunshine so we could sit on the terrace sipping prosecco eating al fresco style whilst overlooking the calm water!

Polenta Bake with Mushrooms, Feta and Tomato
“
Affinity May 2013 _Layout 1 copy 17/04/2013 19:52 Page 41
“
This dish is easy to put together and serves as a perfect, lighter meal for a lovely springtime evening
To compliment the meal
Ingredients 60g Parmesan cheese 100g Feta cheese (crumbled) 150g instant polenta 100g mushrooms 150g cherry tomatoes (some halved) 50g unsalted butter 750ml hot vegetable stock Handful rocket leaves Black pepper
Rocca Guicciarda Chianti Classico Riserva Only the best vintages are produced and bottled as "Riserva", after an ageing period of 20 months in French oak casks and barrels. This Chianti Classico displays a ruby red colour deepening to garnet, a complex bouquet with subtle tones of pressed violets, and a rich and generous taste.
Recipe Preheat the grill. Over a medium heat put the polenta and butter in a deep 25cm diameter ovenproof frying pan. Gradually pour in the stock stirring continously to prevent any lumps. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens and starts to bubble. Season well
£16.99 Sainsburys
Cellier Des Dauphins Merlot Grenache
Take the pan off the heat and stir in the parmesan. Place the mushrooms, feta and tomatoes on top of the polenta.
This wine is made from a blend of the Merlot grape grown all over the world and the local Grenache Noir, which thrives in this area. The sunny, warm Mediterranean climate fully ripens the grapes and produces a delightful, soft and fruity red wine.
Place the pan under the hot grill for 10 – 12 minutes until the tomato skins have burst and the mushrooms are wilting with the heat. Allow to cool for a few minutes before dressing with the rocket ready to serve.
£4.69 Sainsburys
Giesen Estates Pinot Noir An expressive wine with aromas of red cherry, plum, dry spice and earthy mushroom notes. The vibrant fruit driven palate shows concentrated red fruit with savoury flavours and well rounded yet firm tannin with great length. The palate will develop greater richness and complexity with time in the bottle. £10.99 Sainsburys 43

Apple & Rosemary Tartlets Ingredients For the pastry 225g plain flour 100g butter, diced Pinch salt For the Apple & Rosemary Caramel 100g caster sugar 50ml water 50ml thickened cream 100g unsalted butter 3 sprigs of rosemary 1 vanilla pod 5 small pink lady apples, sliced width ways (0.5cm thick rounds, seeds removed)
This sweet is brought to you by the Chef at The Millhouse Hotel -Riverside Restaurant, Sharnbrook,Beds
Method Preheat oven to 200째C. Whisk the flour and salt together. Then put in a food processor with the butter with short pulses until the mixture combines together. Flour the table, shape the dough into a rough rectangle and roll out. Use a round 5cm pastry cutter to cut out shapes and pop in the fridge until the apples are ready. Place a large frying pan over a medium heat, sprinkle the sugar over the base, pour the water over allowing the sugar to dissolve. Keep the sugar mixture on a low heat, roughly 7-9 minutes. Do not stir the sugar mixture as the stirring will cause the sugar to crystallize. When the caramel 44
is a dark golden colour, turn off the heat, add the cream and stir. Then add the butter, rosemary and vanilla seeds and stir. Once the carmel is made add the sliced apples and cook for 2-3 minutes until they start to soften. Remove the pastry from the fridge, layer up the apples 2cm high on a baking tray and top with pastry. Cook the tartlets in the oven for 15-20 mins until the apples are caramelized and the pastry is cooked. Turn out on to a plate with a scoop of vanilla icecream to serve.

T
he newly opened Moltens restaurant, within the recently refurbished Mercure Milton Keynes Abbey Hill has launched a new interactive dining experience with food served at your table on searing hot volcanic rocks. With an open-plan and nature inspired dÊcor that opens up through floor-to-ceiling glass doors onto a covered patio for alfresco dining in the summer, it is the ideal place to dine with friends or family. Diners can choose from a selection of beef steaks of varying cuts, pork loin, chicken, king prawns and fresh tuna which are served with tempting sides of salads, dips, chips and vegetables. There is options for vegetarians with stuffed flat mushrooms, vegetable and haloumi cheese brochettes, and stuffed Moroccan couscous peppers, there is no risk of cross contamination as the rocks for vegetarians are round as opposed to square for other dishes. Starter choices such as homemade lamb kofta brochettes with natural yoghurt coulis and baked figs with Parma ham and honey, and a variety of home-made desserts complete the epicurean adventure. We went along to try this new dining experience for ourselves. Starters were a classic styled dressed ceasar salad and salmon and crayfish salad, both exquisitely presented and refreshingly different. Our mains followed with the dishes being brought to our table part-cooked and sizzling on a volcanic rock, where we proceeded to finish cooking them to our own personal preference. The high temperature of the rock seals in the natural juices and nutrients giving the food a special taste and flavour, absolutely delicious and a real bonus being it’s also one of the healthiest methods of cooking with little or no fat used. An absolutely fabulous interactive dining experience that I would highly recommend to anyone to try, whether it be as a couple or with family or friends, something unique that will have you singing its praises for ages afterwards.

Affinity gardening May Tips... ⧫ Pot-grown tender plants such as nicotiana and fuchsia, widely sold in May, are good value for containers and gaps in borders. ⧫ Mow lawns regularly, raising the cutting height in dry weather, but not letting the grass grow by more than three-quarters of an inch between mowings. ⧫ Pond algae can spread in May, and if straw pads or other treatments have failed to prevent it, then consider adding plants such as water lilies, which will shade algae and reduce it. ⧫ Remember to rotate vegetable crops to help control pests, disease and keep the soil in good condition ⧫ For better blooms next year, resist the temptation to cut back your daffodils until they have almost completely died back. ⧫ If you aren't planning on making wine from your dandelions this year, why not EAT them? They contain more vitamin A than carrots and twice as much spinach. ⧫ Purchase annuals without flowers so that you can enjoy the blooms longer. Choose shorter bushy plants because the larger ones are more established already and may not transplant as well. ⧫ When planting your annuals if you loosen up the roots a bit before planting it will stimulate stronger growth.
Flower of the Month Offering both scent and colour to the late spring garden with their plates of small flowers Sweet Williams with their serrated edges come in a range of pinks, whites and reds. They are a favourite of many gardeners, as they are easy to grow. The frilly edges on the blooms, are a nice addition to flowerbeds. The spicy fragrance of the flowers makes them ideal for cut flower arrangements. When thriving in a good border Sweet Williams last many years, although classed as biennials. But often the ripening of seed proves fatal to them; therefore, any that are worth keeping should be assisted by the removal of the faded flowers before the seed-pods swell.

Relegation or Promotion – Last Day Drama
I
joined Birmingham City in December 1993 and we were bottom of the league and well adrift, but we had a brilliant end to the season, winning six, drawing two and losing just one of our last nine fixtures of the campaign. On the final day, we were away at Tranmere Rovers and needed to better West Bromwich Albion’s result at Portsmouth for us to retain our divisional status. When we arrived at Prenton Park, we were greeted by 5,000 Bluenoses in fancy dress. The fans support was magnificent and helped us win the game 2-1, however we learned that West Brom had beaten Portsmouth. The players and I were in the dressing room and the lads were devastated and many of them were crying their eyes out. The lads had worked so hard in the last two months and we were in promotion form rather than relegation form. After a period of time, there was a knock on the door, and a policeman came into the dressing room and informed us that all of our fans were shouting for us to show our faces. Obviously being relegated, I feared the worst, but nevertheless, went down the tunnel with the players to be greeted by the biggest cheer we have ever had in our life. As we travelled towards the away end at Prenton Park, they jumped the barriers and ran at us. To be quite honest, I imagined being strung up by a rope. I have always wanted to die scoring the winning goal at Wembley and this was not the way I wanted to go. However, the fans lifted me and the players up and marched us around Prenton Park. It was incredible. We had just been relegated yet we were greeted as heroes. It made us very determined to bounce back the following year. It is hard to describe looking at grown men sobbing their hearts out and knowing what to say to console them. For supporters to say that players don’t care makes a mockery of it because they do care deeply. Before the start of the following season, I made a bold statement that we would win the double to repay the fans for their end of season support. We reached the Auto Windscreen Shield Final where a crowd of 78,000 turned up at Wembley, which was
more than the FA Cup final involving Liverpool that year. We won one and drew the next two home matches, which meant that we needed to go to Huddersfield Town on the final day and win. There was huge pressure on us. Once again, our fans were magnificent and once again there were as many fans outside of the stadium as there was in the stadium. We won the game 2-1. The joy in the dressing room at the final whistle in comparison to the despair the year before was like chalk and cheese. Everybody was celebrating, it was a marvellous scene. The joy of winning promotion on the last day of the season given the pressure involved was incredible and I still believe those players did not get the credit they deserved. From one season to the next, from relegation to promotion, on the last day of the season was a rollercoaster of emotion in 12 months. Words could not describe it. It is not just at Birmingham City that this experience occurred. It happened when I was in charge at Barnet. We had finished second three times in a row in the Conference and of course at that time, only the Champions were promoted. In the last of those three years, we went into the final day needing to win at Chorley Town and required a favour elsewhere where nearest challenges Darlington travelled to Welling. We won 4-0 and somebody from the press box shouted down that Welling had scored and we were promoted. We were jumping up and down, celebrating promotion to the Football League. Then a guy came down and told us it was a false alarm. Welling hadn’t scored and Darlington had won the league. That meant we went from ecstasy to despair in literally minutes. That was most probably the lowest point I have ever had in football. To think you have achieved promotion and then be told you actually haven't is absolutely gutwrenching. Words cannot describe how
61
www.theposh.com you feel. It made me sick. I remember the press talking to me afterwards and asking how I pick the players up after that. I think I answered with a few expletives and questioned how I was going to pick myself up. I was shattered, mentally and physically. I have never felt like that in football. The following year, we sold four of our best players, including Andy Clarke for £350,000 to Wimbledon. After selling these four players, nobody gave us a chance and in January we were 15 points before the leaders and at no stage had we been top of the league until the final week of the season. We went on a magnificent run and won five of the last six games so we went to Fisher Athletic on the last day of the season needing to draw to make certain of promotion. Our opponents, Fisher, had already been relegated. After 10 minutes, we went 1-0 down with the player who scored actually on-loan from Colchester, our nearest rivals. Dave Howell levelled and we thought we would go on and win it, but 10 minutes into the second half, the same player scored again for Fisher. Colchester were winning - that is pressure. However, Roger Willis levelled and that would have been enough, but I sent on Edwin Stein as an attacking full-back and he made the third for Gary Bull. We went on to score over 100 goals, which was always my aim. Everyone was congratulating each other in the final stages and I remember running across the pitch to give my chairman Stan Flashman a big kiss! You go through every emotion in final day drama. The pressure is immense, but you never forget those celebrations, particularly when you are taking a non-league club into the Football League. It is the greatest feeling on earth at the time and the difference between getting relegated and promoted on the final day is just a world apart.

At its heart lie hallmark Rolls-Royce attributes of luxury, refinement and hand-craftsmanship, but the new model from the world’s pinnacle super-luxury marque also presents a unique character defined by power, style and drama. With just a hint of the noir.
Royce and his design and engineering teams spent their winters, this contemporary and tactile finish sweeps through the interior, cosseting four occupants in a space bathed in light and warmth.
Wraith’s sweeping fastback design gives the car its unique character. Bold lines, tension in the panels and a raked rear screen evoke the image of a world class athlete poised in the starting blocks. Further expression of dynamic intent can be seen in Wraith’s deeply recessed grille, wide rear track and dramatic two-tone presentation.
Performance delivers on the promise of Wraith’s styling. Power delivery is effortless, but dramatic, thanks to a V12 engine married to 8-speed automatic ZF transmission. 624 bhp / 465kW is available to the driver while the 0-60 mph sprint is achieved in 4.4 seconds, compared with 563 bhp / 420kW and 0-60 in 4.7 seconds for Ghost.
Coach doors open to reveal a sumptuous interior, complete with softest Phantom-grade leathers and expanses of wood called Canadel Panelling. Named after the famous cove in the South of France where Sir Henry
From 1,500 rpm 800 Nm of torque is available (780 Nm for Ghost), while a wide rear track, shorter wheelbase and lower roof height further contribute to the most powerful, involving driving experience of any Rolls-
The interior ambiance is complemented by Starlight Headliner, a Bespoke feature available beyond Phantom family cars for the first time. 1,340 fibre optic lamps are hand-woven into the roof lining to give the impression of a glittering, starry night sky.

Royce in history. The car’s suspension has also been tuned to minimise body roll and discreetly amplify feedback when cornering; while steering weight is heavier at high speeds and lighter at low speeds adding to the spirited drive.
Voice activation commands, for example, come with a one-touch call button located on the steering wheel. A destination no longer requires manual input from a navigation menu and route assistance begins immediately, on-screen and via audio guidance following a voice command such as “navigate to Piccadilly in London.”
Satellite Aided Transmission uses GPS data to see beyond what the driver sees; it anticipates his next move based on location and current driving style, then selects the most appropriate gear for the terrain ahead. Corners, motorway junctions and roundabouts are all anticipated in advance meaning Wraith is constantly poised to deliver on its promise of performance. For over a century a Rolls-Royce motor car has featured technologies designed to support occupants discreetly, delivering a peerless driving experience epitomised by the term ‘effortlessness’. In every Rolls-Royce these assist the driver when called upon, but are prepared to return without fuss to the background when no longer required.
Additional improvements in communications come in the design and functionality of the elegant Spirit of Ecstasy Rotary Controller. This allows navigation through on-screen functions using a touch pad that features pinch and pull functionality to echo smart phone usage. Letters can also be ‘drawn’ onto the pad by hand rather than by scrolling through a series of available characters on-screen.
Advances in mechanical and electrical technology deliver systems like head-up display, adaptive headlights and Wraith’s keyless opening boot. But
Prices in the UK are yet to be announced, although In Europe, Wraith will be priced at €245,000 (Approx £213,000) Aaah what a bargain, I’ll have two! 65

of the Month
Ronnie Singh Age: 26 Occupation: General Manager Elements Nightclub Resides: Bedford (Hometown: Leicester)
You can’t leave the house without? I always find the last few moments before leaving my house stressful. I always try to make sure I grab my ipod every time – even if this has caused me to forget my keys inside – more than once!
Describe yourself in three words? Loud – Confident - Driven What makes you stand out in a crowd? Nothing I’m quite short.
Where do you see yourself in ten years? Ideally doing what I do now with a little bit of grey hair.
Your top three movies? Breakfast Club – The Goonies – Casino What do you do to relax? With my job being quite fast paced when relaxing I like to catch up with friends, go out for a meal or drink.
What three people dead or alive would you invite to a dinner party? Robert De Niro Micheal Jackson Adriana Lima
Your most extravagant purchase and why? My most extravagant purchase would have to be my car. I brought a Mazda RX8 2 years ago and have probably spent twice as much money trying to repair it than I actually paid for it. I currently still own it and it is currently at the mechanics being repaired once again.
What makes you happy? I consider myself quite a positive person and try not to let anything get me down but have to say my Achilles would be cup-cakes. Saturday night you can be found where? On a Saturday night I can be found working at Elements Nightclub. I can’t remember the last time I had a Saturday Night off but I absolutely love it!
Describe your ideal woman? Confident – Funny – Driven and to counter my flaws I would say somebody who can cook would be ideal. Best Holiday destination and why? San Francisco – A lot of my family reside there and so I have spent a fair few care free summers over there and now it has become my home away from home. 67

fter a triumphant West End run, one of the most popular plays ever written, ‘Abigail’s Party’ is coming to Milton Keynes Theatre. Lindsay Posner’s acclaimed revival stars Hannah Waterman (EastEnders), Martin Marquez (Hotel Babylon), Samuel James, Katie Lightfoot and Emily Raymond. With Donna Summer playing on the stereo, the social gettogether from hell is about to begin. Beverly and, estate agent husband, Laurence have invited round new neighbours Tony and Ange and nervous divorcee Sue, twitchy about the party her fifteen-year-old daughter, Abigail, is throwing. Beverly is determined everyone has a good time by plying her guests with alcohol, cigarettes and nibbles. Hannah Waterman as the monstrous Demi Roussos loving Beverley with her incredible Farrah Fawcett style wig and long green dress is brilliantl. Beverley is determined to make sure all her guests have a great evening. Hannah tells us “My modus operandi is to be the hostess with the mostess and I’m constantly putting on a front. It’s bickering covered in politeness - really English,
and oh the awkwardness of the social situation makes you cringe, but the truth is they are all such sad, tragic characters, and massively frustrated and thwarted by their lot really.” With brilliant one-liners, Beverley steals the show with her barely concealed lust for the taciturn Tony. Her overbearing corpulence and her vile treatment of her husband combine to make one of modern theatre’s most recognisable grotesques. We all know her best for her TV role as Ian Beale’s ill-fated wife Laura, in Eastenders, but Hannah says the stage is where she feels most at home. “Although I worked for four years before EastEnders, it was the biggest thing on TV I’d done. But soaps are like a factory and I felt a pull to get back to the theatre, to feed my soul. I’ve been dipping in and out of TV since, but still find the theatre more rewarding, especially when a really great play like this comes along.” Abigail’s Party certainly has plenty of laughs but for those who might want to read more into it, it’s also a rather tragic story with lots of tension. A hugely entertaining interpretation of an iconic work.

L
ately I have started to get just a bit disillusioned by the Internet. Don’t get me wrong, I think the Internet has some really great stuff, unfortunately, however there is also a lot of badness. I am not talking about the truly dreadful and sickening stuff as that is a completely different area which still baffles me as to how (1) it exists in the first place and (2) in this day and age, where we have truly remarkable achievements including sending people into space and having phones that do practically everything for you – we cannot get rid of this vile stuff. Anyway I digress.
accepting of this (as long as they aren’t illegal or immoral!) You can still get your own point across without it sounding like an attack surely? After this I decided to take a look at my Facebook activity and realised it was almost becoming an addiction! Now that we have access on our phones it felt like I was constantly checking it, so I decided to take action. I realised I had uploaded over 1,000 photos – I am not sure my ‘friends’ enjoyed looking at all those! So I’ve had a good clear out and not just of the photos but of the ‘friends’ who never interact with me. I am all for Facebook for keeping in contact with people you don’t see very often and also relatives who live abroad, but not so much for your old next door neighbour’s best friend’s Auntie! I am now limiting myself to once a day checks and the phone gets turned off at 9pm. And you know what – I haven’t missed out on anything exciting, spectacular or even just the mundane!!
The other day I was looking at a Facebook group aimed at local mums and someone asked advice about her six month old waking in the night and should she try and see if the baby would settle back to sleep without her intervening – even if she had to listen to a bit of ‘grizzling’. If this poor mum wasn’t feeling frazzled enough already I am sure the replies did the job!! Obviously there were a few nice ones, however others seemed determined to make her feel evil for putting her baby through the pain of crying (though she never said the baby was actually crying). These reactions seemed a bit extreme to me, especially posting links to ‘research’ about how ‘controlled crying’ adversely affects development! I am sure a lot of people get comfort from these forums and indeed they can be useful if you are looking for local baby groups to join etc. Some might say that if you post a question on the web then you should be prepared for all kinds of replies, which is fair enough, however it seems to me that they are getting more extreme and in some cases, abusive. I am all for a balanced discussion with different points of view and I know there are many different parenting styles out there, however why can’t we all be
Of course I am on Twitter too but tend to use this more as entertainment. The one good person to follow is @earthposts who not only post amazing awe inspiring pictures of our world but also ones to make you laugh – I mean who doesn’t want to see photo bombing squirrels! Don’t forget to follow Affinity Magazine on Facebook – www.facebook.com/Affinitymag and also on Twitter @AffinityMagz – however this is at your own risk as we cannot accept responsibility for social networking taking over your life!!

ast year, a number of patchwork and quilting shops got their heads together to come up with something which would tickle the fancy of our customers. Okay, part of that was a reaction to the slowing down of the market, but we were also looking for novelty and a way of rewarding our customers. But the interesting thing was that we found that although we are competitors – quilters aren’t all that loyal when it comes to buying fabric if loyalty gets in the way of finding what they want – we could cooperate to our mutual advantage And so was born the Shop Hop.
