How to Strengthen your Bones O
ur bones start to lose their strength and density from the age of thirty-five onwards, which may sound quite shocking. We are constantly losing and creating bone tissue throughout our lives but this process really starts to accelerate from our mid-thirties, this also goes for our nails, teeth, hair and skin, all of which need similar nutrition for optimum strength. The acceleration of loss from factors including stress, a sedentary lifestyle and an overly acidic diet is the reason for the deterioration from such an early age. We all know that calcium and Vitamin D is needed for the development of strong bones in children. But, unless we are vigilant in replacing and replenish other minerals, which have an equally important role to play in keeping our bones strong and healthy, increasing our calcium intake will not be sufficient. We need to regularly replace and replenish our supply of all minerals to keep abreast of the battle bone replacement vs. bone destruction, which is going on within our body day-in day-out.
Some other suggestions which may help in strengthening bone tissue: Keep your diet low in red meat with protein from predominantly vegetarian sources along with oily fish.
Magnesium, boron, manganese, silica and zinc are all vitally important for our muscular-skeletal system. But, one lesser known micronutrient is Vanadium. Vanadium is a mineral, discovered early in the 19th century and named after Vanadis, the Norse goddess of beauty and lustre, as it produces such a wide variety of beautifully coloured chemical compounds. For some reason, this vital mineral is overlooked in nutrition for the muscular-skeletal system in favour of over trace elements such as silica, manganese, boron and zinc . As with other trace elements, we need them in very small amounts. But they can be supplemented not only for osteoporosis, but for those suffering from cardiovascular disease and diabetes, as it has a valuable role to play in reducing cholesterol and balancing blood sugar levels. It does however need professional supervision. It can be found in a wide variety of vegetables from carrots, corn, cabbage, mushrooms, shellfish, garlic, tomatoes, radishes, pepper and parsley. But the amount of trace elements in vegetables is entirely dependent on the quality of our soil. Whole grains, oats and buckwheat are a rich source of Vanadium and adding an algae supplement is an excellent way to ensure a readily bioavailable source for the body.
Make a fresh chicken stock with plenty of turmeric, which is an excellent anti-inflammatory for the joints to ease pain and slow deterioration. Have a regular inflammatory oils.

Avoid drinking coffee and replace it with Oolong tea, as it’s more alkalising. Reduce sugar, including alcohol, and simple carbohydrates, which strip bones of essential nutrients and minerals, if eaten in excess. Include some regular weight-bearing exercise in your routine. Festival Fun 14

F
estival season is almost upon us and for many is one of the highlights of the British summer. But as much as we love great music, spending time with like-minded festival goers and dancing ‘til dawn, there’s one thing that fills the majority of female festival goers with the utmost dread; the hygiene dilemma. But don’t worry - the amount of sheer fun to be had at a festival definitely outweighs the lack of shower facilities, portable loos and sleeping in a muddy tent, and with a bit of smart preparation you can enjoy the festival to the fullest! These helpful tips on what to pack for a festival, from Ingrid Hume at eco-friendly hygiene brand Organyc, will help ensure that with a little preparation you’ll have one of the best long weekends of your life:
Wear the Right Clothes: Festival clothes can be as colourful and exotic as you wish - anything goes! However, be prepared for all kinds of weather. Stick to shorts and skirts instead of jeans, which can leave you feeling overheated and are a nightmare when muddy or damp. Choose clothes that are made of natural fibres e.g. Cotton and avoid nylon as these can make you feel overheated, hot and sweaty. Don’t forget to always keep a spare layer handy in case of rain!
Wellies You might have faith in the promising weather forecast, but don’t be fooled. A typical British summer will include rain so you WILL need those wellies! With the thousands of people dancing away on wet grass, wellies are a festival necessity. The brighter coloured the better! Wet Wipes: This is the clear answer to the festival hygiene dilemma. If there’s one thing you remember to pack, make it wet wipes! Aim for a brand that will be gentle to skin (especially potentially sun-burned) and won’t lead to irritation.
Organyc Wet Wipes (£2.99 for 20) are made from delicate organic cotton, that is free of any pesticide residue, and are gentle enough to be used on intimate areas, so they make great alternatives to toilet roll – something you’re unlikely to find in a festival loo!
Stay Hydrated: Not only is there the chance of being out in the sweltering sun all day, in the middle of a shadefree field, but alcohol – found in free-flowing abundance at most festivals - is also highly dehydrating. The last thing you’ll want is to miss out on seeing your favourite bands because of fainting, or exhausting yourself from dehydration. Make sure to drink plenty of water - carry a bottle throughout the day for a quick hydration boost whenever thirst strikes . Sun Protection: Sun protection is a must as the sun’s rays can still cause skin damage and sunburn even if the weather is cloudy - remember you’ll be outside for most of the day! Choose a natural mineral sun lotion or spray that protects against UVA & UVB rays from the first application

Spring Break
e all lead such busy lives with no time to relax and rejuvenate our tired minds and bodies, which is exactly how I felt after a hectic few months I was in desperate need of some time out to recharge my batteries, so what better way than pure self indulgence and pampering in the form of ‘The Escape and Stay Spa Plus Package’ at Whittlebury Hall Hotel and Spa. Once we’d changed into our fluffy gowns we proceeded to enjoy the stimulating combination of the heat and ice experiences including the sanarium, sauna, steam bath, caladrium, as well as the ice cave and hydrotherapy pool. I was certainly starting to feel relaxed and refreshed when I made my way up to the treatment rooms for my ESPA Skin Radiance Facial. I was taken into the peaceful treatment room for my facial which included a rejuvenating facial massage and nourishing facial mask to drench my skin with moisture, whilst I enjoyed a relaxing head massage that left me feeling calm and refreshed whilst my skin looked radiant and hydrated – told you I was only 20! Whilst I had this treatment my husband had a Clarins Rebalancing Massage which helped ease his aching muscles (he is addicted to the gym!) leaving him feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. A little peaceful time on the loungers around the pool before heading to the Terrace Café for lunch. A little more time on the loungers was called for before a dip in the pool and a few bubbles for me (the Jacuzzi type for a change!) 20

It was now time to check into our room and get ready to head down to Astons restaurant for dinner. Service was warm and friendly and the food delicious. Once finished we were both so relaxed we just wanted to collapse into bed for a good nights sleep – which is exactly what we did. Awaking refreshed, we enjoyed the buffet style breakfast before taking coffee in the Silverstone Bar. We left feeling fully rejuvenated, batteries fully recharged and ready to face our busy lives all over again. The Escape and Stay Spa Plus is from £129* per person, and includes overnight accommodation, two-course buffet lunch, three-course dinner in Astons Restaurant, full use of The Day Spa Heat and Ice Experiences on day of arrival, full use of the Spa and The Leisure Club facilities PLUS your choice of a 50 minute treatment from either: ESPA Skin Radiance Facial OR Clarins Rebalancing Massage The Day Spa at Whittlebury Hall 0845 400 0002 www.whittleburyhall.co.uk

Midlife Madness Family Values
I
t’s funny how you can get used to your own time and space. I remember so vividly that as young mum ‘me time’ (if it had even been invented back in the day) was a commodity that was in very scarce supply. Yet now I love my relaxing baths, my ‘at home’ yoga sessions and being able to curl up with a cuppa or a glass of something and catch up on my favourite TV. I enjoy meeting mates, going out for dinner, without having to plan and arrange a sitter or anything, even deciding to go away for the weekend at short notice. And now I can even manage a city break on hand luggage – because of course I only have myself to consider.
young child has. They are seriously busy folk, all of the time. Of course I say yes to the requests , can we play with play dough, (making almost anatomically correct models of half the animals known to man – or ageing woman in this case) read a book, make cookies, go to the park, build a structurally sound and realistic town from duplo (that was a challenge) and visit Kid’s World. The last request was the one I should have said no to but it is simply not in my grandmotherly vocabulary. He is a young chap and whilst too big for the toddler area as a pre-schooler, definitely likes a bit of support on the big frame. The half marathon I ran a few years ago was a walk in the park compared to all the crawling, climbing, hoisting myself up and down and through and under and round that had to be done to accomplish one circuit of the frame – and we were there for several hours!
So just when I was about to start fretting that I might be getting a bit selfish (who me? .. I hear you cry) life gave me a much needed antidote in the rather lovely shape of a grandson. Yes he is adorable, and I had the privilege of looking after him for a couple of days, which made me realise several things.
When his dad came home he found us both crashed out on the sofa – had we had a good day he asked us. I guess we nodded, the energy to speak was simply too much at that time but, of course, we revived. It is amazing what a night’s sleep can do. That, however, was only day one!!
• I am a lot older than I was when I was mum • I am correspondingly less lively and energetic (note to self - continue yoga and gym!!) • I am definitely becoming more selfish – and here’s the scary bit, I am loving every minute.
By the evening of the second day, when I lay in bed almost unable to move with exhaustion, I realised I had learned several important lessons that I will pass on for your edification.
I must state that I was one of the besotted mothers – I absolutely loved it, I hardly ever remember grumbling, maybe that is the rose tinted retrospective glasses but genuinely I don’t think I did. I was the one always talking about my offspring – probably boring everyone else - with their latest escapades and achievements. I also love children, not just my own, but almost all children, I am the crazy person who wants to sit next to small children on flights or trains, I just find them fun. I spent years working with children and I am entirely besotted with said grandson. So obviously I said yes to a couple of days looking after him – I am his grandmother, how hard can it be?
• If you are a mum enjoy every minute - it is priceless because they grow up much much more quickly than you would ever have thought possible. • If you are privileged enough to become a grandparent grab every occasion you can to spend time with your grandchildren – I mean it, in true Hermione style (Harry Potter) stick up your hand and declare loudly ‘pick me’ - such precious times are not to be missed. • When you do have the pleasure arrange a few days following where you need to do nothing more exerting than lifting the tea cup or unscrewing a bottle of wine, while you marvel at how much energy you used to have!!
Well in answer to that hypothetically posed question let me enlighten you. I suppose the years have just made me forget the insatiable desire for action that an average 22

A
s well as being good for those dark circles and dreams of walking on the red carpet on the arm of Brad Pitt, a good nights sleep also gives your brain a good clear out. A recent study carried out by the University of Rochester has revealed that zonking out can declutter our brain.
The brain has a unique method of cleansing itself and is highly active during sleep, it clears away toxins that would otherwise build up and trigger neurological disorders like Alzheimer's disease, and thus could be one of the reasons you feel so refreshed after a good night's sleep
But what if you don’t feel brighteyed and bushy tailed by the morning? If you’re getting lots of beauty sleep but still feel exhausted, one of these things could be to blame… Thyroid An underactive thyroid is a common cause of over-sleeping, but hard to diagnose without a doctor. If you’re getting plenty of sleep but still feel sluggish, book an appointment with your doctor. A simple blood test can detect if there is a problem with your gland.
Sleep Apnea Between 3-7% of the population suffer from this. They wake up because they stop breathing between five to hundreds of times an hour. Sounds worse than it is, you will sleep for longer because your sleep quality is compromised. The difference is you don’t remember waking up, so it’s hard to tell if you’re suffering. Symptoms of sleep apnea are snoring, being overweight, and waking up with a headache
which is caused by a nocturnal lack of oxygen. Speak to your doctor if this sounds like you.
Dehydration Without enough fluid intake, blood pressure drops, slowing delivery of oxygen to the brain, which can leave you feeling flat out. The amount of fluid each person needs depends on the individual, but you should aim to go to the toilet at least three times a day and drink between six and eight glasses of waterbased drinks, these can include tea and coffee.
Alcohol More than half of us have a drink between three to four times a week to relax after a hectic day. While alcohol initially relaxes you, it can compromise your sleep quality – even if you are getting the recommended 7-8 hours. It prevents you from entering deep sleep because the chemicals in alcohol disrupt your sleep cycle.
Mineral Deficency Lack of Magnesium can leave you feeling lethargic, as it plays a vital role in maintaining blood glucose levels, muscle health and concentration. It is found in leafy vegetables and nuts, but a supplement can help too. Try Healthspan Magnesium Tablets with full Vitamin B Complex and Vitamin C (£6.95, healthspan.co.uk) Napping Taking a mid afternoon nap is fine, but the duration of it is crucial. It has been clinically proven that taking a nap for up to 30 minutes is revitalising, but any longer than that and you’ll end up in a REM cycle for an hour. Waking mid-cycle can leave you feeling worse so if you want to nap for longer, you need to have one lasting 90 minutes

Want a Happy Life? Let go of these thoughts! Most of us utter the words “I’ll do that when “X” happens” or “I’ll just wait for “X” and then I can do something about it!” But what we are doing is putting our life and happiness on hold. You need to stop waiting for the “X” that is holding you back and make yourself happy now!
‘If I’m good, eventually I’ll get the life I deserve.’ STOP! You’re already good enough. Success, as we know, does not just come to those that deserve it. ‘One day I’ll meet the man of my dreams.’ You might, you might not, so don’t waste your lovely, precious, life waiting for him.
‘I’ll save that for a special occasion.’ No, you won’t. Whether it’s a stunning party dress, far too expensive Christian Louboutun shoes or your granny’s best china, it’s pretty much guaranteed that said items will never come out of the back of your cupboard. Use them today, life’s too short to wait for a ‘special occasion’ ‘When I achieve X, they will finally tell me how proud they are/they love me.’ Actually, they probably won’t. If someone doesn’t like/approve of you today, stop trying to change their opinion. And definitely DON’T make major life choices in the hopes of winning them over.
‘If only I lost a stone, I’d feel happy with myself.’ You may well feel better, but only until the novelty wears off. You’re also unlikely to ever lose weight if you start from a place of self-loathing. Make peace with the way you look now, love yourself and you’ll find change will happen far more easier. ‘It’s all their fault…’ When life hits a bad patch, it’s tempting to blame other people, be it a horrible boss, an unsupportive partner, judgemental parents, a lying
business partner. You may well be right. But by continuing to blame them it’s putting your life on hold and giving them power they don’t deserve. The best revenge is SUCCESS! ‘I’ll pay off my debts when I get a large chunk of money.’ From where ... Santa Claus? While it’s fine to fantasise about winning the lottery or marrying a billionaire etc, but whilst we’re living in this fantasy it’s the banks that are laughing with the interest they’re charging you; look at intrest free balance transfer options.
‘I’ll do it tomorrow...’ Why is it that we imagine that we will magically feel more in the mood for getting out of our comfort zone the day after today? Any daunting task, be it doing that new exercise routine, contacting the guy you’ve had your eye on for ages, applying for a new job, is not going to get easier tomorrow. You’ll just find another excuse and the burden of expectation will just become heavier every day – don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today!
‘I can’t believe they let me down like that, I don’t want them in my life any more!’ Looking to one person, whether it’s a best friend or partner to meet too many of our needs is a recipe for disappointment. Sometimes a particular person may not be capable of giving you what you want/need; don’t expect too much from one person Everyone has their limitations - don’t call your recently single friend if you want someone to listen to you discussing your new man and how wonderful he is!

ast month (April) the new spring A La Carte menu was launched at the stunning Bedford Swan Hotel in their award winning River Room Restaurant, so we popped along to see what was on offer – well it would have been rude not to! We were shown to our table where we mulled over the menu – there were so many delicious looking dishes it was hard to make a choice, but eventually we did with Open Duck Ravioli, Parma Ham & Red Wine Sauce and Grilled Asparagus wrapped in Parma Ham, served with Hollandaise sauce being our choices. The pasta was homemade with the texture of the duck and ravioli complimenting each other perfectly. The asparagus was cooked just right, the parma ham slightly crispy, sliced to the perfect width to appreciate the taste; as for the hollandaise sauce, it was one of the best I have ever tasted. The service was attentive and the waiter very knowledgeable with regards to choice of wine and also when questioned about the menu main courses, where catch of the day was sea bream. The roast breast of duck was amazing, cooked to my own taste with savoy cabbage and parsnip crisps, (I’m fussy and I know I am a chef’s worse nightmare, but I can’t bear any blood!) the parsnip crisps were food heaven. Main courses finished we took advantage of the views of the Embankment before deciding on desserts. Tipsy Trifle was my husband’s choice, presentation was perfect as was the taste, and the Bedford Swan Fruit Pavlova was the other choice, the meringue was in the shape of a swan, the passion fruit, cream and meringue were a taste bud delight. All the dishes on the menu looked extremely appetising and it was difficult making choices, which means I’ll just have to go back again very soon! 01234 346565 www.bedfordswanhotel.co.uk

Sam Collins
We caught up with Sam Collins, Head Chef at The Embankment in Bedford in between him conjuring up his gourmet delights for us to try Age: 38
Occupation: Head Chef at The Embankment What would you do if you had a time machine? Go back to 1986, when I didn’t have many cares in the world except how high I could bunny hop my BMX.
Describe yourself in three words? Dedicated, Difficult, Happy
What makes you stand out in a crowd? I’m normally the one that tries not to be noticed too much, I’m happy to let someone else be the “Front Man”
You can’t leave the house without? My mobile phone, it seems to have my life in it these days. If I take a look in your fridge what would I find? Baby formula, pureed food, tonic water and a couple of cold beers.
Your top three movies? Star Wars, Wild Style, The Godfather
What do you do to relax? These days I spend time with my family, the days of all day parties are behind me now.
If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and what would you say to them? David Bowie just to thank him for making such fantastic music for such a long time.
Your most extravagant purchase and why? Our house, as even though I spend most of my time at work, I need a place to come home to.
If you were a biscuit what would you be? Jammy Dodger,
If you could be anyone or anything what would it be? I always used to want to work as a music journalist, as music is my other passion, listening, not playing.
Who is your inspiration/role model? My parents, if only my younger self could hear me say that!!
Describe your ideal woman? My wife obviously, as well as being beautiful, kind and loving she puts up with the long hours, cancelled days off and the general catering life.
What is the one gadget you couldn't live without? My iPod, goes everywhere with me so I have a constant supply of music
Where do you see yourself in ten years? Hopefully looking after a couple more of the pubs and kitchens and moving away from behind the stoves.
If you were stranded on a desert island, what three items would you take with you? Radio, as I couldn’t do without it, beers, as it will be hot and I’ll fancy one and a fishing rod so I don’t go hungry. 59

Fry’s Footie Corner Justice For The 96
I
think everybody in football, including me, is hoping and praying that Liverpool can pull off a miraculous achievement by winning the Premier League. On the 15th April, it was the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy that saw 96 people lose their lives. The families have gone through hell and back since that day, fighting for justice and their fight has been rewarded by the outcome of several investigations.
How fitting it would be, for these 96 families, if Liverpool could pull off the Premiership title, which at the start of the season, nobody gave them a chance of winning with the big hitters including Chelsea and Manchester City installed as favourites. I don‘t think any of us can imagine what the mothers, fathers, sons and daughters, in fact all members of family, have gone through when somebody goes to a game of football and never returns. One man has stood above everyone else at this time. That man is Kenny Dalglish, who spent morning, afternoon and night with the families and I think he went to every single funeral, which is a quite incredible gesture of humanity at any level. It would be justice for everyone in the city of Liverpool and that includes the Everton supporters, because the families of the people that died are not only Liverpool fans, but family members may well have supported the blue half of the city. It will just be real justice if Liverpool are crowned the Premier League champions at the end of the season.
In the recent service, both Brendan Rodgers and the Everton manager Roberto Martinez both played a big part and the chairman of Everton Bill Kenwright said: ‘The authorities did not know what they were taking on when they took on the city of Liverpool.’ Let’s all pray that Liverpool win the Championship and justice is done but whatever happens, the whole of football thoughts’ are with them. For sure the 96’, Will Never Walk Alone.

PORSCHE CAYMAN GTS Resets Sports Coupe Benchmark T
based on the 3.4-litre engine of the Cayman S. Specific fine tuning has delivered an additional 15 hp (11 kW), with the result that the Cayman GTS offers 340 hp (250 kW). The torque has also increased by ten newton metres to 380 Nm.
he new Porsche Cayman GTS is the most powerful and fastest edition of the mid-engined coupe from the German sports car manufacturer to date. With an uprated engine and sharpened chassis responses, the Cayman GTS sets a new benchmark for sporting performance in its market.
Further emphasising the distinctive character of the GTS is the Sport Chrono package and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), fitted as standard. These offer the driver the opportunity to not only modify the damper stiffness, but also subtly change the throttle characteristics of the engine. In conjunction with the optional Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) seven-speed double-clutch transmission, the Launch Control function accessed via the Sport Plus button enables the Cayman GTS to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds, 0.3 secs quicker than a standard Cayman S with PDK.
Since its debut in 2005, the Cayman has earned a particular reputation as a driver’s car. At the heart of the two-seater beats a charismatic flat-six engine, positioned deep in the middle of the chassis to offer a low centre of gravity for a balanced and precise driving experience. Furthermore, the distinctive coupe styling confers a high level of torsional rigidity which further enhances the dynamic virtuosity. The six-cylinder ‘boxer’ engine in the Cayman GTS is 64
May2014.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 21/04/2014 14:46 Page 63
With the standard manual six-speed transmission, a top speed of 177 mph is possible. The new GTS is also the first mid-engined Porsche coupe to be certified according to the Euro 6 emissions standard, and achieves an overall fuel consumption with PDK of 34.4 mpg Combined (31.4 mpg with manual transmission). The dynamic engine mounts also offered as part of the Sport Chrono package enables the Cayman GTS to offer an impressive breadth of chassis responsiveness. Under acceleration, cornering or braking, the mountings between the body shell and engine stiffen automatically to reduce the effects of mass transfer during dynamic manoeuvres, further increasing agility. The Cayman GTS can also be specified with a new, optional sports chassis configuration that lowers the ride height by 20 mm, underlying the fact that at the heart of every Porsche is a race car suitable for both the circuit and everyday use. Inside, bolstered sports seats and leather trim are standard. Like other Porsche GTS models, the sporting ambience of the interior is refined with Alcantara elements. The new Cayman GTS is available to order now priced from ÂŁ55,397, and will be arriving in Porsche Centres in the UK and Ireland this month (May) Customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car, and further develop their own skills behind the wheel, by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone. 65

I R P N S G to Summer 66
May2014.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 21/04/2014 14:46 Page 65
A
s nights get lighter, days longer and hopefully weather warmer it is time to shake off the cobwebs of the winter months and get ready to enjoy the summer. What better time to take a look at your life and see if you wouldn’t benefit from clearing out a few areas.
Relationships I am not suggesting that anyone can spring clean relationships but it is certainly possible to have a think about catching up with friends you haven’t seem for a while, or maybe deciding that certain relationships have run their course. With other relationships check that you haven’t settled into a bit of a rut and if you feel you have then try changing some of the things you do. If the winter months mean you’ve spent a lot of time watching TV, think about going for a walk in the evening or taking up a new hobby or sport. If you think there are problems in a relationship then try to be honest with yourself and decide if the problems are things you can cope with, or put up with, and if not then determine to do something about it. The starting point for any sort of change is recognising the problem and then discussing your feelings with the person concerned.
Get the basics right Without doubt how we look after our body has an impact, not just on our physical well-being but on every aspect of our body, mind and emotions. So it is a good place to start. Many people find as they start wearing lighter clothes that they’d like to shed a few pounds. If that is the case then now is the time to get inspired to make a few small changes to your diet. Make sure you are eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables each day, opt for low fat proteins like lean meat and fish and check the size of protein portions – they should fit in the palm of your hand. Dairy products can also be a good source of protein, though some may be high in fat, and don’t forget that beans and pulses contain protein too. We read a lot about carbohydrates but they are useful for providing energy, even when you are losing weight but try to stick to whole grain, unprocessed carbohydrate and try to avoid having carbohydrates at every meal if you are trying to shed a few of those excess pounds. Now is the time to think about some super healthy salads or try a few smoothies. Remember also to be aware of what you drink - alcohol and many soft drinks can have a lot of calories. But it is important to allow yourself a few treats just plan them in when you are planning what you will eat and drink.
Exercise your mind Learning is good for everyone, whatever age and ability you are. If it is a while since you have learned something new then why not give yourself a bit of a challenge and learn a new skill. Whatever it is it will be good for your brain. Research conducted in Hong Kong has shown that the adult brain is capable of new growth when exposed to stimuli similar to that which babies experience when learning about their environment. www.phys.org/news/2011-04-adult-brainscapable-rapid-growth.html#jCp So now could be a great time to learn a new language, perhaps before you go on holiday, tackle the technology that terrifies you or try learning a practical skill like cake baking which is experiencing a real come back (just remember you don’t have to eat them all) or flower arranging, anything will do, because you will be doing your brain a favour by learning.
As the weather gets warmer it’s great to enjoy the outdoors when you exercise, think about walks in the park or bike rides or even playing outdoors with children if you have them. There are some great parks and outdoor areas to visit and any form of activity will help burn up calories. If exercise is something you feel more serious about then now is a good time to review your fitness regime. Like anything it can become a bit stale, so do some research and decide what your goals are – is it about getting fit or losing weight? Do you want to tone up or build muscle? There is a lot of information available on line and in books and magazines and you could always book an appointment with a trainer or fitness coach.
Energise your emotions We all know we are emotional beings, in many ways that is one of the features that distinguishes us from other organisms, yet so often our emotional health is ignored. Now could be just the time to give yourself an emotional health check, Are you happy with your life, job, friends and family. Are there goals you want to achieve but find you never get round to doing the things you want to? Do you spend a lot of time feeling stressed? Does a fear, or phobia mean you can’t do some of the things you‘d like to? There are always some things you can change but often you need to acknowledge first that there is a problem and then decide to do something about it.
Environment We are all influenced by our environment and of course it is at this time of year that many folks have a spring clean, begin to decorate or even think about moving. It is certainly worth checking out every so often if your home is still a place you want to be in to relax. Individuals and families change, do you still need all the things you have or would a de-clutter make your home a nicer place to be? Now could be the time to have a look at your wardrobe, think about all those books or toys that are not used anymore and then get rid of them. Charities will take them or you could even make a few pounds by selling them on line or at a car boot sale.
“You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.” ― Mae West

Keeping it (almost) Natural!
T
his subject is rather a taboo one however hopefully it is getting less so and to put it delicately, I think we need to address the ‘lady garden’!! Now having gone through the indignity of childbirth, and more than once, I am rather desensitised (only in the talking about it though) when it comes to matters down below! With Hollywood movie stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow admitting to channelling the 1970’s vibe maybe the ‘naked’ trend could be becoming less popular? Of course I am a true believer in ‘each to their own’ and the ‘whatever floats your boat’ attitude, however, as a mother, the worry is that whatever appears in porn movies is giving the younger generation unrealistic expectations of all things ‘grown up’. A recent survey commissioned by BBC Three showed that the youngsters they had spoken to had said that watching internet porn has affected their expectations of sex and, shockingly, one in four of them had watched it by the age of 12! Other comments included that they had unrealistic ideas of women’s bodies. I am not saying that we all get our lady garden inspiration from porn movies and being naturally blessed in that department, I never knew what a bikini line was until quite late in life, having never had to worry about that kind of maintenance, so maybe it’s hard for me to empathise with women who have quite drastic ‘haircuts’! I also wince when I hear
how such smoothness is achieved, especially the part when you lay on your front and hold your bum cheeks apart! But after reading the findings from the above survey, I am concerned that the naked look is more popular through wanting to try and fit into these, sometimes unrealistic, expectations rather than from personal choice? I am not saying we should all be rocking ‘The Gwyneth’ but whatever our style, it should be down to what we are happy and comfortable with. I hope that I can teach my children, the girls and boys, that people don’t need to fit into such stereotypes to feel and look attractive to others. Oh, and one area where I will be keeping it naked is my armpits! After seeing a picture of Madonna sporting a hairy armpit I have to say that, in my opinion, even she cannot carry off this look. I also hear that the smooth look is getting popular for the men too? The only time ‘The Husband’ has had a close shave down there was in preparation for the snip. I had no desire to check out the results as the only image that came to my mind wasn’t one to get excited about!

The Wolf of Wall Street his is the story of New York stockbroker, Jordan Belfort (Leanardo DiCaprio). From the American dream to corporate greed, Belfort goes from penny stocks and righteousness to IPOs and a life of corruption in the late 80s. Excess success and affluence in his early twenties as founder of the brokerage firm Stratton Oakmont warranted Belfort the title "The Wolf of Wall Street." Money. Power. Women. Drugs. Temptations were for the taking and the threat of authority was irrelevant. For Jordan and his wolf pack, modesty was quickly deemed overrated and more was never enough.
