Another exciting announcement is that Matilda the Musical is coming to Milton Keynes Theatre next June. This is one of my all time favourite shows and is a big hit with adults and children alike, page 58 tells you all about it. We live in a society obsessed with weight loss and what we look like, sometimes though, it needs nothing more than a well cut blouse, or a different colour dress to make us look a stone lighter, page 28 tells you all about ‘The Clothes Diet’ - no cutting out anything here, it’s just about looking at the clothes we wear, and adjusting them to suit our body, you’ll be amazed at the difference it makes.

Go Naked! The top 6 benefits of Eating Raw Foods

If you’re looking to spring clean your eating habits and boost your energy levels after a long winter, then you may want to think about increasing the quantity of raw foods in your diet, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains. We talk to two Nutritionists about the best ways to increase the amount of raw food in your diet and what the benefits can be.

Nutritionist Shona Wilkinson, from Superfood.com, the online destination for all things health and wellbeing, explains “Raw food is thought to be healthy as it helps the food retain all the nutrients which could otherwise be destroyed during the cooking process, and therefore helps foods to retain their essential enzymes and nutrients.”

Increased Fibre Nutritionist Cassandra Barns explains, “Most of the foods we can eat raw are whole plant foods, so are naturally high in fibre. This means by making a focused effort to include more raw foods in every meal, you’re likely to naturally

increase your fibre intake. Fibre, of course, is beneficial for your digestion as well as helping to fill you up for fewer calories.” It can help you reach your 5-a-day (and more) “Vegetables and fruit should form the bulk of your raw food intake. So, again, focusing on eating more raw foods should naturally increase your vegetable and fruit consumption, as well as the variety you go for,” explains Cassandra.

It can give you a vitamin burst “Vitamins can easily be lost from foods in the cooking process – especially the water-soluble vitamin C and B vitamins.” Cassandra explains, “As a result, raw foods can contain much higher levels of some of these vitamins.”

An antioxidant boost Like vitamins, plant antioxidants such as polyphenols can be destroyed when a food is cooked or heated. Eating raw

may2017.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/05/2017 19:28 Page 15

helps to preserve these active substances. And did you know that polyphenols are not only present in vegetables and fruit? Raw cacao – the unheated version of cocoa – is rich in them too. Try OMBAR (£1.99, Planet Organic) – a range of raw cacao bars in delicious flavours, such as Goji Berry and Cranberry and Mandarin. Cassandra says: “raw cacao has fantastic antioxidant benefits. Cacao is also a good source of minerals such as magnesium and iron. It’s a true super food as well as being a tasty treat!’

Increase of Nutrients Shona explains, “Cooking food may diminish its nutritional value. For example, certain vitamins, such as vitamin C and folate, are destroyed by heat.” However Shona goes on to explain, “We do know that some foods can be better for us when cooked because the fibrous part is broken down. This can make them easier to digest. Cooked tomatoes are higher in lycopene than uncooked ones.” Like anything therefore, it’s good to have a healthy balance between raw and cooked foods.

It’s alkalising “There is a theory that the typical modern diet high in refined and processed foods and animal products may cause increased acidity in the body. This may in turn be linked to poor health, including bone loss, as minerals are released from bone to try to ‘buffer’ the excess acidity. Raw plant foods, however, can have an overall alkalising effect, helping to create a better balance and favouring long-term health,” says Cassandra. Shona also advises that there are some foods that should always be eaten cooked, these include; red kidney beans, soy beans, fava beans, buckwheat greens, some mushrooms, rhubarb leaves, potatoes, parsnips and cassava. For the greatest benefit and to make you feel your best it’s important you listen to your body and make sure you’re eating a wide range of different foods.

The Power of ‘Yet’

24

may2017.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/05/2017 17:17 Page 23

There is a lot of talk of mind-set these days - the underlying beliefs, often subconscious that can exert a sometimes significant influence upon almost every area of our life and happiness. Within education circles there has also been a lot of discussion about the work of Carol Dweck and ‘growth mind-set’.

impact on our lives. We have probably all heard that often learning takes place at the edge of our comfort zone, in some way there is always some stress involved in learning. If our belief is that there is always something new to learn we are more likely to embrace learning. If there is something we can’t do and we frame it as something we haven’t learned to do ‘yet’ our response may be very different from if we have the view that our abilities are fixed and we’ll never be able to learn that skill.

In very simple terms the research and theories of Carol Dweck have shown that one of the key influences on our lives and therefore success and achievements is what we believe about ourselves. Very specifically what we believe about our abilities and characteristics.

Becoming aware of our lack of knowledge or lack of skill in an area is okay, if we believe we can develop but not if our view is that we will never be able to do it. I wonder how often you may have said ‘I could never………..’ or ‘I’ll never been able to…….’ !

Through research and experiments she identified two almost opposing mind-sets, which she called the fixed and growth mind-set and they referred to the beliefs people held about their own characteristics in respect of intelligence and learning.

So criticism in those areas may be painful and the likelihood is we will avoid putting ourselves in positions where we have to do those things.

The Fixed Mind-set This is characterised by a belief that who you are in terms of your ability, creativity and characteristic is fixed - set in stone, unchanging. The problem with this is that it can create a situation where criticism is seen as an attack on character and, if the underlying belief is that this can’t be changed then understandably this becomes personal and is to be avoided. If you believe that your abilities can’t develop then the temptation will be to stay well within your comfort zone for that area and avoid anything that challenges you, because the underlying belief is that the skill can’t be improved.

The Power of the Growth Mind-set By developing a growth mind-set and encouraging children to develop a growth mind-set we open ourselves and them up to the idea that we continue to learn and develop and that means it is safe to take risks and to stray out of our comfort zone. A growth mind-set improves motivation and learning. When working with children or as a parent, it’s important to encourage them but this should be done in ways that encourage them to keep on learning - using phrases like, ‘don’t worry if you can’t do it yet’. Encourage them too by the fact that if they find something a bit hard that is a sign that their brain is growing.

The Growth Mind-set This mind-set emphasises the fact that everyone can develop and new skills can be learned, in essence that we are not ever ‘finished works’ but are always able to learn and develop ourselves in different areas. The thing that will bring about change is not just our aptitude but our effort and motivation, how we apply ourselves

Our Response One of the key things that mind-set determines is how we respond to situations. When faced with something challenging are we likely to steer clear or armed with a growth mind-set are we likely to respond positively to the challenge and put ourselves into position where we can grow and develop.

Of course we need to remember that as humans we don’t have a single view of ourselves, we may hold different views of our abilities in different areas of life, so we might feel we are accomplished in one area but not in another, and we may be more prepared to learn in one area than another.

Midlife Madness Joys of the Great Outdoors

One of the great things about nights getting lighter and weather getting a bit warmer is that you can enjoy the great outdoors. And we know of course that it’s good for us! Well it is isn’t it - if you protect yourself from the hazards.

As an interesting aside, there are now specific programmes that encourage children to go outside and benefit from the outdoors, honestly, check out natural thinkers, I’m not saying it’s not a good plan just a bit surprised that it isn’t something completely natural as I look back in fondness on the days lost climbing trees and adventuring, in the spirit, if not having the actually adventures or even language ‘golly gosh’ of the Famous Five, if you doubt me check out www.naturalthinkers.co.uk

Clearly sun is only an occasional risk living in the temperate clime of the UK - but that almost makes it more dangerous, - it’s not always sunscreen weather but sometimes it is guaranteed on the days you have ventured out for a long bike ride or walk or even a trip to the seaside without the sunscreen! I personally love the outdoors and love sun - I know there are inherent dangers in the form of skin cancers and goodness knows what, but I have always told myself that firstly our sun is not that strong (I do know it’s the same sun but we are generally further from it) - and secondly I am sure as I age (gracefully) my bones could probably do with the vitamin D.

Anyway back to my overgrown hedge, so we tackled the disorganised and overfilled (not with cars - everything but in fact) garage, found secateurs and shears and set about our task. I remember noticing that there was a lot of flying wildlife for so early in the year - I’m talking bees and small flying creatures rather than anything that would add to the Attenborough wildlife portfolio, and yes, within minutes one landed and actually stung my poor fella. You know about man flu don’t you? So we had a short (yawn) interlude to apply potions and administer sympathy, coffee and, of course, chocolate biscuits, what is good for the dementor effect in Harry Potter works for all manner of other problems too!

But recently I have been reading about the toxic chemicals in sunscreen! Damned if you do, damned if you don’t, it seems. Apparently there are a lot of free radicals which can also be carcinogenic! So being outdoors is good for us, being close to nature relieves stress and makes us calmer but if we don’t use sunscreen there is a risk of cancer, oh and if we do use sunscreen there is a risk of cancer!!

Then it was back to the grindstone, or more accurately the shears and overgrown hedge. Clearly we had left it too long because some of the branches were really thick trunks. I’m not pretending to know how it happened but at some point a branch stabbed- YES stabbed my garden buddy in the ribs and a loud crack pierced the air!! I thought it was a twig snapping but it was something internal - ligament was our combined guess. Well not only was that the end of hedge trimming but it was the beginning of daily yoga! Which in fact, has been brilliant and I find I can move parts of me that I hadn’t been able to for years and I believe I am a calmer and nicer person!!

The answer is simple instead of long days out keep it short - you know a spot of gardening - that type of thing. Great plan! We had a rather overgrown hedge so I encouraged long suffering partner that what we needed to do on one of the warm spring days was to cut the hedge - we were wearing clothes, obviously, including gardening gloves so frankly sunscreen didn’t seem essential. Not only was it crossing a chore off the never ending household (including gardening) chore list – (who would be an adult home owner) but being in the great outdoors would be good for us too.

But I do have to issue a warning - beware of the great outdoors! Namaste! 26

The Clothes Diet Lose pounds just by watching what you wear, not what you weigh!

W

e’re all very aware that eating too many calorie-loaded foods is likely to result in weight gain, and many of us face daily negotiations with our food choices.

Yet why is it that some days we feel bigger in our clothes and some days we feel slimmer – despite weighing the same? The only thing that’s changed is …the clothes we’re wearing. Nutracheck co-founder, Rachel Hartley said: “When it comes to losing weight, no diet or exercise regime can make you drop half a stone overnight, but it’s completely possible to look as though you’ve lost a few pounds by careful clothing choices.” Next time you get dressed, take a few minutes to decide whether you’re wearing flattering (‘lower fat’) or unflattering (‘higher fat’) clothes. There are four basic themes that determine whether a garment or accessory appears ‘fattening’ – fit, shape, fabric and colour. Fit If you’re not feeling very confident about your weight, there’s a temptation to choose loose fitting clothes to cover up – but this can have the opposite effect. ‘Higher fat’ fits are any clothes that are too big, or too tight: both will make you look larger than you are. Anything with underwear showing through – think VPL under trousers, and too tight bras with cutting, narrow straps. If your bra cup is too small, you’ll spill over the top – not a good look. Avoid sleeveless tops and dresses that are not cut deep enough, allowing the skin around your armpits to squeeze out of the sides. ‘Low fat’ fits need a good base layer – so choose underwear that shapes you. It doesn’t need to be expensive – it just needs to fit you. If it feels too tight, put it away, it won’t flatter you. Shape ‘Higher fat’ shapes are anything oversized or with

excessive amounts of fabric. Think ‘Puffa’ coats, pleated skirts, supersized sweaters, ruffled shorts, frilled peasant skirts, dungarees, harem pants and baggy sweatpants. Steer clear of low-rise trousers; high rise shorts, jackets with breast pockets. If your sleeve length finishes across your hands, it can make you look swamped – have it shortened. ‘Low fat ‘shapes include clothes that skim your body. Flattering styles are mid-calf skirts; trousers with side pockets and boot cut jeans, V-neck sweaters and simple wrap dresses. Fabric ‘Higher fat’ fabrics can be the most alluring, heavy on texture, shine and bling. Be cautious about wide ribbed corduroy, velvet, metallic shines, fluffy mohair, wide stripes and loud florals. Avoid thin, poor quality jersey and T-shirt fabrics that cling to your lumps and bumps.

‘Low fat’ choices are comfortable and understated: cotton, denim, wool crepe and silk. Ensure you choose good quality jersey fabrics in plain colours. Fine ribs, vertical pinstripes and elasticated fabrics can help by moulding curves. Colour ‘Higher fat’ colours include neons, bright primary colours, blocks of pastel and all-white outfits.

‘Lower fat’ options focus on darker hues: navy, charcoal, olive and burgundy – and, of course, black. But no one wants a cupboard full of black so use the darker primaries to break the black cycle. Dressing after weight loss Rachel said: “What we’ve seen after someone has lost a lot of weight is that their head can take a while to catch up with their body – they still see themselves as bigger than they are. We’ve had people tell us their clothes size for photo shoots, only to find we’ve had to pin dresses and trousers that are way too big and hanging off them! It can take a while to adjust mentally to the physical change”. www.nutracheck.co.uk

Poppadoms and chutneys started our Indian journey, before being followed with Delhi Paapri Chaat (crispy delicate pieces of pastry topped with chickpeas and potatoes, accompanied by sweet yoghurt and tamarind). The textures and tastes amalgamated together effortlessly to produce a slight kick, with perfectly balanced flavours. Hubby chose Quail marinated in sugar, garlic and turmeric, then dipped in lightly spiced batter and deep-fried, another hit for authenticity and taste. Next up was a Tandoori mixed grill with vegetable Pilau rice, (a selection of different meats marinated in spices). The fusion of flavours seeped into the tender meat allowing every mouthful to be savoured. Chingri Mallai Curry (sautÊed prawns cooked in a tomato onion puree and finished with coconut milk), was the other dish. The spicy kick intermingled with a sweet tang that produced an array of distinctive flavours on the palette. The food here is definitely not to be missed, and I had certainly over indulged, so I opted out of dessert and settled for a refreshing peppermint tea instead, although hubby did no such thing and decided to go on our waitresses recommendations and try the Rasmalai – A traditional favourite, of cured milk dessert with pistachio cream, a refreshingly cooling dish, that provided a sweet end to a memorable dining experience. Maaya certainly lives up to its authentic and unique Indian cuisine claim, serving a variety of exciting dishes that will have you counting the hours until you can visit again. Hummus with Seared Lamb and Toasted Pine Nuts Ingredients

"Just perfect to wow your guests with on an evening's outside dining this summer"

Lamb & Pine Nuts 75g pine Nuts 150g lamb (strips prepared for stir fry) 3 tbsp garlic infused olive oil Juice of ½ lemon 2 tbsp chopped fresh flatleaf parsley (or dill or coriander/cilantro) 1 handful pomegranate seeds (optional) For the Hummus 1 clove garlic (peeled) 2 x 400g cans chickpeas (drained) 4 tbsp olive oil 6 tbsp tahini 3 tbsp lemon juice 3 tsp maldon salt 2 tsp ground cumin 4 tbsp Greek yoghurt

Method

For the Hummus Put the garlic clove, chickpeas, 3 tablespoons olive oil, tahini, lemon juice, salt and cumin into a food processor and blitz until a knobbly puree. Add the Greek yoghurt and process again, if the hummus is still very thick and paste-like add another couple of tablespoons of olive oil. (This will often depend on the chick-peas, as different sorts will make the hummus more or less thick.) Taste for seasoning, adding more lemon and salt if you feel it needs it. Put into a wide, shallow bowl ready to serve with the lamb, drizzling the top with a little olive oil just before the lamb goes on. For the Lamb and Pine Nuts Toast the pine nuts in a heavy based frying pan over medium heat; shake every so often until they take on a deep golden colour. Tip the pine nuts into a bowl, and put the oil into the pan and back on the heat. Cut the lamb into tiny, thin shreds, or fine dice if you prefer, and then add to the pan stirring furiously until the ribbons or cubes begin to crisp and brown at the edges. Hold half a lemon over the pan and give it a good hard squeeze, pushing the lamb around again in the pan as the juice drains down. Put the shreds of lamb over the hummus, lemony oil juices and all. Sprinkle with Maldon salt, grind over some pepper and scatter over the toasted pine nuts. Scatter with freshly chopped herbs and a few pomegranate seeds if to hand, and then serve immediately with lots of oven-warmed pitta Recipe by: www.nigella.com

Comes to Milton Keynes We got terribly excited when we received this news – Matilda the Musical is coming to Milton Keynes Theatre next June 2018. The multi award-winning production of Matilda will embark on its first UK and Ireland tour in 2018-2019. The winner of 85 international awards, including 16 for Best Musical, will be at Milton Keynes Theatre, from Tuesday 5th – Saturday 30th June 2019. The production will be accompanied in each location by a new education programme to engage young people, inspired by the musical. From a traveling library of stories led by Mrs Phelps, to whole school takeovers of Matilda, the RSC aims to reach over 15,000 children, in collaboration with touring theatre partners. Now in its sixth year in London’s West End, it is the longest running production at the Cambridge Theatre where it continues to play to packed houses. With book by Dennis Kelly, original songs by Tim Minchin and direction by Matthew Warchus, Matilda is the story of an extraordinary little girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny.

may2017.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/05/2017 17:27 Page 57

Tim Minchin said: “I, like millions of others, feel like Dahl is in my blood, because I grew up with his books. So to have contributed to a piece of work that brings one of his most famous stories to life is one of my life's great joys. I’m utterly thrilled that audiences in cities all across the UK and Ireland will now share and be part of Matilda’s story.” Inspired by the incomparable Roald Dahl’s beloved book, Matilda was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company and premiered at the RSC’s The Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in November 2010, before transferring to London’s West End in October 2011, where it opened to rave reviews. Winner of 85 major international awards, including 16 for Best Musical, Matilda The Musical has been seen by more than 6.5 million people worldwide. Having swept the board at the 2012 Olivier Awards, with a record-breaking seven awards, and winning four Tony Awards and a Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theater for the four girls sharing the title role on Broadway, Matilda has now played in 51 cities worldwide and continues to delight audiences in London, Australia and on tour around North America. Tickets are on sale now for this unmissable musical, be sure to grab yours for what is sure to be a sell out show.

Fry’s Footie Corner

In the FA Cup, we have a showpiece final to look forward to with Arsenal facing Chelsea at Wembley. Both semifinals were keenly contested and there were a lot of fantastic goals scored. I, for one, am really looking forward to seeing the final. I think it would be a great way for Arsene Wenger to potentially end his career at the Emirates, but for Chelsea, they will be desperate to get the first part of the double out of the way.

The excitement of the play-offs are just around the corner and with money at an all-time high for newbies to the Premier League, the Championship final will be one to watch, particularly given the size of the teams involved. With Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion clinching automatic promotion, Huddersfield Town will be desperate to finish off a memorable campaign with success at Wembley Stadium. In League One, Fleetwood Town and Bolton Wanderers were fighting to the death to secure the last automatic promotion place, so they will have to dig deep to secure success in the play-off lottery.

With Manchester United still involved in the Europa League, the race for the Champions League places will go right down to the wire. At least one huge team with a big manager will miss out, so I am sure there will be plenty of jostling for position in the final few weeks.

The League Two automatic promotion race was secured long before the final day but there were so many teams in with a shout of reaching the play-offs going into the final few days of the season, that it is hard to know who will have the advantage. It is always those with momentum that tend to do well in knockout events. I would like to add my congratulations to Lincoln City on securing promotion from the National Conference. Their success was thoroughly deserved and the Cowley brothers are surely destined for bigger things in the future. We have had a couple of players on loan at the Imps in Harry Anderson and Lee Angol and I know they enjoyed their time at Sincil Bank.

It is always an exciting time and as a football fan, this is what it all comes down to – holding your nerve and digging deep into that squad!

Racing Ahead

The Audi R8 LMS GT4 A udi has been offering the Audi R8 LMS GT3 race car since 2009, followed by the second generation of this success model in 2015, and the RS 3 LMS for the TCR category in 2016. Now Audi Sport’s portfolio of models has been extended once again.

The Audi R8 LMS GT4 stands for production-based racing. It has directly been derived from the road-approved Audi R8 Coupé V10, is powerful and offers a high level of safety. At the same time, it is an affordable choice in terms of purchasing price and cost of ownership. It is the ideal race car for amateur campaigners, in line with the spirit of the GT4 regulations that continue a great sports car tradition, as fascinating road-going sports cars were a popular base in GT racing around the world more than half a century ago. In racing, the audience will be able to see the productionbased Audi R8 LMS GT4 for the first time in the Nürburgring 24 Hours from May 25 to 28. With that, the

brand fills another growth category in international motorsport. The GT4 class, which originated in Europe, will be intensively marketed on an international scale starting in 2017, with fielding opportunities in North America, Asia, Australia and Europe. “13 racing series in which GT4 models can compete worldwide already exist today worldwide,” says Stephan Winkelmann, Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH. “Audi Sport GmbH is one of the leading manufacturers offering cars in the GT3 and TCR customer sport categories. Now we’re targeting the GT4 class at exactly the right time. These fast-growing business segments and the DNA shared by our race cars and production vehicles underscore our ambition to become a true global player in the high-performance league.”

may2017.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/05/2017 17:27 Page 63

The Audi R8 LMS GT4 shares more than 60 percent of its assembly components with the road-approved Audi R8 Coupé and is produced at the Böllinger Höfe site as well. The customers of the new race car benefit from these synergies in terms of purchasing price and cost of ownership. Audi Sport is developing the GT4 model, which delivers up to 364 kW (495 HP) depending on its rating, during the course of the 2017 season before a final homologation level has been achieved and approval for racing is requested. During the second half of the year, the team of

Chris Reinke, Head of Audi Sport customer racing, will be preparing the production of the race car. Consequently, the first customers will be able to receive the new Audi R8 LMS GT4 before the end of the year. Around the globe, Audi Sport draws on an extensive network of service, spare parts logistics and professional support for the R8 LMS GT4. Audi Sport customer racing has established this infrastructure for the GT3 project on four continents and, like for the RS 3 LMS, uses this proven network for the GT4 model range as well.

Location, location, location is definitely a main attraction for boutique hotel No. Ten Manchester Street, offering guests a taste of London luxury away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets of the city. Tucked quietly away within a terrace of Edwardian town houses in one of Marylebone’s finest streets, this hotel combines luxury and refinement with a convenience and energy. It’s not until you get close and see the smart black railings, flag flying high and the elegant No. Ten plaque on the wall that you realize this is a hotel, it manages to blend into the suburban street effortlessly. The large door opens directly onto an intimate reception area, dominated by two grand high-backed red velvet chairs that make you feel like Royalty arriving home after a hard days work. The light from the stunning rectangular chandelier makes the black marble floor gleam even more and the woman behind the reception desk couldn’t be more friendly - you feel as soon as you walk through the door that this place is special. The hotel boasts many unique characteristics such as large bay windows and period features, mixing old London charm with contemporary cool. With 45 bedrooms spread out over five floors, all rooms have a colour palette of creams, gold’s and dark wood - Our room; a Junior Suite was modern and stylish. It housed a lounge area that was furnished with plush, luxurious Christopher Guy sofas, and accessories, a bedroom area with a bed swathed in the softest Egyptian-cotton sheets, and to the side our own kitchenette area (never mind the night we were moving in for the week!!). The finishing touches here are carefully thought out, chocolates, monogrammed His and Hers slippers, soft fluffy gowns, a Nespresso coffee machine, not one but two flat screen TV’s both with ALL Sky TV channels including Sports, Movies and Atlantic, Wifi and even a Smartphone for use with free local and international calls to selected countries. The En-suite bathroom was just as impressive featuring a rain shower, bath and T London luxury toiletries. Exploring the hotel before we headed out for the evening and we stumbled across Cigars at No.Ten. This is the ultimate fantasy for any cigar connoisseur, an opportunity to experience some of the worlds

finest cigars, housed within a walk-in humidor containing a range of, hand-rolled Havana cigars; including Cohiba, Montecristo, Partagas, Trinidad, Bolivar, Hoyo de Monterrey, and Davidoff; all of which can be enjoyed inside in the Cigar lounge or outside on the all weather Cigar Terrace, complete with large throws and outside patio heaters. Both areas are decorated in dark hues, with portraits of famous people dominating the walls, this place is certainly worth spending time in, even if you’re not a cigar buff, a drink in the surroundings is a must – sit for too long soaking up the atmosphere though and you’ll not want to leave. Unfortunately we weren’t having dinner at the hotel as we were off out, but the menu in Dieci’s Restaurant (an Italian affair), certainly looked appetizing. Walking into the lobby area on our way out, we were so impressed with the friendliness and efficiency of the staff. A polite is everything aright, to hailing us a cab, carrying our bags and enquiring about our day. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble. After the most divine sleep, Breakfast was served in Dieci’s Restaurant. A welcoming area, with comfy sofa seats and chairs, dim lighting, dark plush carpets, and atmospheric lighting. Breakfast was buffet style with hot and cold options available including an assortment of yoghurts, cereals, pastries, as well as the traditional English breakfast staples. There is the option to order fresh off the menu and choices include such things as Eggs Florentine, Eggs Royale, omelette and even mixed berry pancakes – Breakfast was tasty and varied and certainly set us up for the day. Our time at No. Ten came to an end far too quickly - I had fell in love with this hotel, a place right in the heart of London, but with an intimate elegant feel. Perfect for a weekend of exploring the Capital, knowing that at the end of the day you can escape the hustle and bustle and retreat to your own little hideaway of modern style and traditional warmth. ITALY

Indulging in

may2017.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/05/2017 17:28 Page 73

With its rich and proud history, the cultural legacy of Italy’s importance in classical antiquity and the Renaissance, iconic monuments (boasting the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites in any country), famously delicious cuisine, varied and beautiful landscapes, ranging from picturesque coasts to some of the tallest peaks in Europe, friendly people, and generally blessed with great weather, it’s easy to see why Italy appeals to so many – whether visitors are looking for a cruise, city break, tour, or an activity holiday. My previous trips to Italy have been on cruises, visiting some of the most notable cities for a few hours, or perhaps overnight, so I’ve dipped my toes, so to speak. My recent trip with Back-Roads Touring was a very new and different experience, and highlighted the benefits of touring in a small group as much as it did Italy’s diversity. As an adapted version of the Italian Indulgence tour, my trip had fewer two-night stays in hotels than the original tour, but I found that changing hotels was much more seamless than I had thought. One of the most acclaimed benefits of cruising is waking up in different places but only having to unpack once – so I anticipated that this might be an issue, but it wasn’t. Firstly, porterage meant that I didn’t need to lay a finger on my suitcase except for opening and closing it, or leaving it outside my room to be collected, and check-in was always smooth and quick, it was expertly overseen by Isabelle, and the group number was small (again, another major benefit of small group touring!). Over eight days, starting from Florence in central Italy and wInding our way to Venice in the northeast, I had truly indulged in the diversity, beauty, culture, and authenticity of Italy (and certainly its cuisine and wine!), and had experienced the Back-Roads Touring difference. The pace was relaxed and the atmosphere friendly and informal, there was plenty of scope for freedom and flexibility, and the worries and stresses of

checking in and out of different hotels had been taken care of. The small group size enabled us to get to know one another better, as well as enabling us to enjoy intimate and authentic experiences, such as private tours of family-run grappa distilleries or having a private castle opened up to us spontaneously, or staying in a hotel inside Venice as opposed to a few miles away on its outskirts. This was an entirely different way of travelling for me, and I felt that I was able to immerse myself a little more in the country I was visiting, Discovering smaller but nonetheless charming towns way off the usual tourist trail, and learning so much about the Italian way of life and what was special about each region and by soaking up the local atmosphere for myself. The itinerary we followed (and the original, complete 'Italian Indulgence' tour) weaves varied landscapes - from rolling Tuscan hills carpeted with vineyards (albeit not yet with vines), to the vast lakes and Alpine backdrops of the Lake District to name just a couple – it contrasts small towns with the famous 'must-do' cities, and threads together some authentic and immersive experiences seamlessly into a memorable and beautiful tapestry. What made the tour really special, though, was the knowledge, professionalism, and friendliness of our tour leader, Isabelle, who was passionate, funny, and informative, and helped make the whole experience memorable and enjoyable, as well as entirely smooth. With Isabelle was Fabio, the driver who always made sure the luxurious mini-bus was pristine every day and greeted us with a friendly smile, a family-like atmosphere was created for the group, which really enhanced everything. The Beauty of Bodysgallen Hall Inside and Out

may2017.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/05/2017 17:28 Page 75

Set in over 200 acres of gardens and parkland with the picturesque Snowdonia as its backdrop, is Bodysgallen Hall, a 17th century National Trust Hotel – As the solid wooden door slowly creaks open you half expect to be greeted by the short Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, shuffling from room to room investigating a murder. The hotel is impressive, reminiscent of Stately home visits back in my school days, where the conversation on the coach home always had us discussing what it would be like to live in such grandeur. Well now I didn’t have to imagine, I was experiencing it myself with a few days break at Bodysgallen Hall in one of my favourite places – North Wales. Through the wooden front door is the large entrance hall with oak paneling, a grand fireplace and large lattice stained glass windows. Furnished with antiques that are complemented with fresh flowers along with historic pictures hanging from the walls, make this space just perfect for taking morning coffee, afternoon tea or sitting in one of the alcoves, gazing in awe out of the window at the stunning views outside. As you climb up the old wooden staircase, even more ancestors adorn the walls. Reaching the first floor you discover a second magnificent lounge room, with history coming at you from every angle. Above the grand fireplace is the 17th century coat of arms of the Mostyns, Wynns and Vaughans – the previous residents of Bodysgallen Hall & Spa Hotel. Everywhere you turn you stumble across another hidden nook or another piece of history – a few days here to explore is just not long enough. Continuing up the stairs to the next floor and we reach our room. In fitting with the rest of the hotel, the room is quaintly country and history combined, home- made biscuits and mineral water are little touches that make this hotel feel like a home from home, I felt if I sat in a little corner for too long my mum might shout up that dinner was ready. It is not just the house that is steeped in history and charm, the garden is just as impressive and includes a rare 17th century parterre of box hedges filled with sweet- scented herbs, a rockery with a cascade, a walled rose garden, and several follies, hiding stone statues and benches so you can rest your weary legs in between exploring the lush greenery and beautiful outdoor space. Dinner is served in the high ceilinged Dining Room. Heavily draped windows and delicate candlelight create a romantic atmosphere in a restaurant where head chef John Williams prides himself on using produce from the hotel’s own garden. We ate on a blustery evening, where the wind gently rattled the windows, all we needed was Hercule Poirot to appear and announce the murder he had been waiting for earlier had now been committed! Our dining experience began with a glass of champagne and a selection of delicate canapés that teased our tastebuds

ready for the food that was to follow – The fillet of mackerel, with pickled cauliflower and pineapple was faultless as was the poached wood pigeon, which was cooked perfectly. Main courses were just as delightful, fresh sea bass served with barbeque aubergine, crab fritters, roquito peppers and tomato flavours proved mouthwateringly delicious and of course you can’t possibly visit Wales without eating some Welsh Lamb, this one was slow cooked with fennel pollen that just melted in the mouth, served alongside smoked red pepper puree, vegetables, potato fondant and a rich, smooth jus that fused all the flavours and textures together effortlessly. Desserts followed and hubby simply drooled at the warm pear and ginger cake, served with a scoop of apricot sorbet and warm roasted pear, and the panna cotta with a banana passion fruit sorbet was just right for me - light and refreshing. We retired in front of the roaring fire for our coffees, where the warmth of the flames and the food in our bellies had us going into a slight food coma, before we dragged ourselves back up the old wooden staircase to bed. Next morning, freshly brewed tea and coffee was served in our room before we returned to the dining room to enjoy a traditional Welsh breakfast alongside some spectacular scenery. (Little tip; ask for a table next to the window.) Before we set off for a day exploring I headed to the spa, a short walk away from the main hotel. Consisting of a large swimming pool, sauna, whirlpool, steam rooms and gym. A refreshing morning swim, before it was time to be pampered with a Darphin Facial treatment. This was so relaxing and included a blissful foot massage with hot towels as well as a neck massage. Afterwards I retreated to the cosy relaxation room, a herbal tea and soft music keeping the tranquil atmosphere the spa is so good at creating. I finally managed to drag myself away and I left feeling invigorated and revitalized. There’s so much to see and do in North Wales and Bodysgallen Hall lies at the heart of it all. The mountains and coasts of Snowdonia, the North Wales Borderlands, the beautiful Isle of Anglesey, and the bustling North Wales Coastal Resorts are all within easy reach which means only one thing - one visit just isn’t enough you’ll just have to return to this special hotel a few more times. Bursting With Culture Historic Cities

may2017.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/05/2017 17:28 Page 77

Famed for its enviable Mediterranean climate, watersports and its myriad festivals, the Region of Murcia, in southern Spain, is also a haven for history buffs and culture vultures – and a week's holiday taking in everything it has on offer could cost from less than £22pppn in June. The region's strategic location has ensured it retains many of its important historical links: rock-paintings in caveshelters dating back to the Iberian period; the splendour of Roman antiquity with its urban refinement and penchant for the theatrical; Visigoth cities; Arab medinas; Christian castles, watch-towers, churches and temples; and numerous civil and military buildings. The mix of cultures affords an opportunity to sate one's appetite for all things cultural, historic and relaxing in a picturesque region of Spain, which boasts four stunning cities. The region's multicultural capital, Murcia – the seventh largest city in Spain – boasts a beautiful baroque cathedral dating from 1394; the imposing 15th-century Almudí Palace, which has been both a grain store and the city's law courts; and, a couple of miles from the city but clearly visible, the castle of Monteagudo, an 11th-century fortress atop a rocky hill almost 150m above sea level to mention only three attractions. Going from one terrace to another, from one square to another, walking about the streets and enjoying life in the open air is one of the best ways of blending in with the Murcian atmosphere. Enjoying some cañicas – small draft beers – here, while chit-chatting, is a real pleasure. If you add a couple of typical tapas from the region, we're talking about luxury. You won't be able to say 'no' to marineras (Russian salad served on top of a long, crunchy ring-shaped bread stick, and topped off with an anchovy in brine), caballitos (prawns covered in pastry), matrimonios (anchovies in brine and vinegar) or pasteles de carne (beef-filled pastries). Cartagena, 27 miles south of the city of Murcia, can trace its maritime origins back to 227 BCE, when the Carthaginians first set foot on its shore. Like the region as a whole, Cartagena enjoys a plethora of archaeological sites with many Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine and Moorish ruins remaining. And, its Port of Cultures project is designed to make the city's historical and cultural sights more accessible for tourists – a good example being the panoramic elevator, which connects the port with the Concepción Castle, which adorns the top of one of the city's five hills. Directly across from City Hall, the Museo del Teatro – the city's jewel – showcases artifacts excavated from the magnificent Roman Theatre, which dates from between 5 and 1 BCE.

And, of course, the city has fresh seafood aplenty. Try the typical caldero, a type of fish stew served with rice and garlic, washed down with local wines and accompanied by the traditional drinks of the area such as the asiatico coffee – coffee with condensed milk, cinnamon, lemon and whole coffee beans. Smaller in size but equally big in character is Caravaca de la Cruz, one of five holy cities in the world and permitted, by Papal authority, to celebrate the Perpetual Jubilee, meaning a celebration every seven years at the town's Sanctuary of the True Cross. And 2017 is one of those years! Legend has it that, in 1232, the Moorish King Abu Zeid was converted to Christianity when he saw how two angels brought a cross down from heaven to a priest held prisoner in the castle, in order for him to give mass. Almost 400 years later, inspired by the legend, on the site of the fortress, the Sanctuary of the True Cross was built, with its spectacular red marble façade and its fascinating Holy Art and History Museum. Created by the Knights Templar to house a fragment of the 'True Cross', it is, now, primarily a shrine to which thousands of pilgrims pay their respects every year. Caravaca has narrow streets and small squares, with its baroque and renaissance buildings all overlooked by the castle and church at the top of a hill. Yet for all its apparent 'other worldliness' it remains a living town, with its sunbleached houses and towers seemingly defying the onset of the 21st century. Lorca is the city of the sun; the city of 100 shields or, maybe, even 100 names. Indeed, its many names are a consequence of its various influences from the Iron Age to the 21st century. It has, arguably, more monuments than any other locality in the region, with plenty of free-to-enter museums, squares, palaces, notable buildings and churches too. The impressive medieval castle, for example, where Muslims, Christians and Jews lived together for centuries, can be seen from far away. Its baroque town centre is one of the most important in the region, while the Columna Miliaria, milestones – eliocroca to the Romans – for the Via Augusta, which passed through the district, can be seen at the Lorca Municipal Archaeological Museum together with other Roman artifacts. The murder is part of an open DIA investigation, one so classified that Decker and his team aren't cleared for it. But they learn that the DIA believes solving the murder is now a matter of urgent national security.
