The Secret to Feeling Good Probiotics Keep and Maintain a Healthy Weight According to a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, taking certain probiotics may actually help you lose weight (and keep it off too!) Additional research suggests that the gut flora in those that are overweight, in comparison to those that are of a healthy weight, is different, which explains why this might be the case.

Age, poor diet and stress can deplete our bodies of billions of good bacteria, which can lead to digestive upsets and bloating. Probiotics are the “friendly bacteria” inside our gut which digest and produce nutrients to help restore digestive balance. But did you know that they can help with much more than simply keeping your gut happy?

Moderate the Effects of Alcohol We know that too much booze isn’t good for our liver but did you know that it can also affect your gut? Alcohol can promote increased permeability of the gut lining which affects the balance of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria. Probiotics can help protect from the negative effects of alcohol by replenishing the beneficial bacteria and promoting a healthy gut lining.

Digestive healthcare experts, Renew Life (www.renewlife.co.uk) has teamed up with nutritionist Kim Pearson to highlight 5 reasons why Probiotics could be the secret to feeling good! 5 Reasons Why Probiotics Could Be The Secret to Feeling Good:

Mood Boosting Probiotics don’t just make your tummy happy – they can make you happy too. We are learning more and more about the link between the gut and the brain, known as the ‘gut-brain axis’. We now know that good bacteria in the gut are capable of producing and delivering substances such as our ‘happy hormone’ serotonin – in fact, the gut contains approximately 90% of the entire body’s serotonin. Taking a probiotic regularly helps to maintain a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria within the gut.

Uplifting Energy Constantly feeling tired is the bane of the modern world but probiotics could be the perfect pick-me-up. Low energy levels often arise when you aren’t getting the vital vitamins and nutrients from your food needed to keep you energised. A multi-strain probiotic sustains healthy levels of good bacteria, to help you absorb the goodness from the food you’re eating. A healthy gut flora also assists with the production of extra B vitamins, essential for energy production in the body.

Strengthen the Immune System The immune system within our gut accounts for 70- 80% of the body's immune cells and so optimizing our gut health is essential in maintaining a healthy immunity to infection. Probiotics help protect against infections, resulting in fewer health problems. To re-establish good bacteria, try Renew Life’s award winning Ultimate Flora Critical Care (RRP £36.99 – Vegetarian Society Approved) - unique one-a-day probiotic containing 50 billion live cultures from 10 different beneficial strains. Each capsule has an enteric water-based coating to ensure the live bacteria survive the harsh, acidic environment of the stomach and is delivered to the intestines. Available at various health food stores, including Whole Foods, Planet Organic, As Nature Intended, Nutri Centre and Revital. information www.renewlife.co.uk 12

Holiday Blues

I’m sure all you hard working folk out there value your holidays, just like I do. We all need time to relax and recharge our batteries, though we may have different ways of doing that! I have some mates who approach a holiday with military precision, planning everything from how they pack their case and decide which restaurant to eat in with exhaustive effort, to burying themselves in guidebooks for weeks before they leave and considering the holiday a dismal failure if they don’t get to see every historic or cultural landmark at least once. That’s fine … ….for them. I can even go so far as to say that I enjoy sightseeing …occasionally, and what’s not to love about a bit (little bit) of culture on holiday.

Big mistake! He was gone a long time, that was ok, he returned waving pamphlets, definitely worrying, also disturbing because I was just at a great point in my audio book where the heroine had realised her husband was cheating on her with her friend’s daughter and was just going to confront them all– very tense part of the novel, hence big sigh and dramatic removal of earphones! I’d already made it quite clear that parascending, paddle boating, banana boat riding, jet skiing, scuba diving, hill trekking, buggy safaris, golf, bike riding or any other ‘active’ stuff wasn’t on my agenda and, as we’d visited here lots of times before, we really had done the whole sightseeing thing! In fact anything that didn’t involve lying or sitting, preferably with a glass in hand, just didn’t grab my attention. So, pamphlets caused concern.

For me it’s all about balance and expectations. Balance as in cultural visits are fine providing I still have plenty of time to work on the tan while sipping a Margarita or Mojito. Expectation as in if I am going abroad to a beach resort with a pool, I do rather expect to spend time on the beach or in the pool – let’s be honest there are loads of fabulous places here, and fabulous beaches, but to venture into the sea without a wetsuit, even in August, is foolhardy at best.

It lends no weight to my powers of persuasion that within what seemed like minutes I was enrolled for private Portuguese lessons! I had to go because it was 25 Euros for one but only 27 euros for 2 so it was such a great offer, we simply both had to go!!! The method of teaching, effective I must grudgingly admit, was to talk to us in Portuguese, no English allowed! What this meant was that simple instructions were given in a slow, deliberate and often repetitive way, much like you would with a non-verbal toddler, “pick…up…the…book… from…..the…bookcase…and…put…it…on…the…table”

The first week of the holiday was great, weather superb, beaches lovely, noise of the sea relaxing, tan coming on nicely, not sure about the cocktails because I fell in love with the Sangria, very fruity, so I’m sure it was at least two of my five a day – so I made sure I had it every day, obviously!

You get the picture, and it was amazing that over the course of several days I ended up understanding a lot – my deepest fear had been grammar books, so at least I was spared that and it did seem sensible to begin with hearing the language in a structured way, like children do, although at times I did feel like a 3 year old, but possibly less intelligent.

Then he started muttering about ‘doing something’ – I recognised the danger signs and suggested he downloaded another book on his ‘device’. Something useful and beneficial, at this point I sat up and looked at him - without my ‘shades’ - with a look that I hoped conveyed ‘the whole point of a holiday on the beach is NOT doing anything useful, and a tan is good for vitamin D, and I’m eating lots of fruit (in the Sangria) what more can you ask of me’ and suggested he went for a nice long walk.

The only problem was …………….outside was the beach, a good book, sunshine, and sangria. They beckoned me constantly. Maybe the time has come to holiday alone! Adios!! 18

The FAST Lane Learning to live in

Be clear about what you want and be honest with yourself.

There is a lot said about success and happiness these days, people WANT success, and happiness, and they constantly talk about it. Of course success means different things to different people, some want to be successful in relationships, for others it might be work – getting a promotion, entrepreneurs and business people want to see their business become successful, for people involved in training or education they may want to pass the course and some people seek success with hobbies or sport, playing an instrument to a higher standard or improving their golf handicap for example. Why do they want it – well for many it is associated with happiness and yes it ‘looks’ different for each individual though the common themes of happiness and success are happy relationships, financial security, a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment and of course health. Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out. Robert Collier

24

As we go through life our priorities often change, but it’s important to be clear and honest with ourselves about what it is that we want, what would make us happy ‘right now’. Some people may have been very ambitious and single minded until children come along, then priorities change and getting home at a reasonable hour may seem more important than chasing every sale. That’s fine but if you still go around telling yourself, and possibly others, that you want to be top in the sales charts again then you just set yourself up for disappointment. Similarly as children get older or as people start new ventures they may have to pull out of things they had previously been involved in, perhaps building a business rather than being on the PTA. Being clear and honest will get you where you want to be more quickly, and it’s perfectly ok to let go of old goals and aspirations when new ones present themselves.

nov2015.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 22/10/2015 21:00 Page 23

Believe it is possible I’ve written a lot about mind sets before – because they have such a powerful impact on people’s lives, often without them even knowing. Mind sets can block us from moving forward. If you have a mind-set that your relationships always fail and you are destined to be alone – guess what, you probably will be. If you have a mind- set that people like you don’t succeed in business – well you probably won’t. They are thoughts, possibly subconscious thoughts, but they will dictate what you do, and what you do will dictate what happens in your life, relationships, work or business. What we can or cannot do, what we consider possible or impossible, is rarely a function of our true capability. It is more likely a function of our beliefs about who we are.

Walk the Walk People I work with often have great plans for what they are going to do, and can talk at length about how great things will be. But their actions just don’t fit. If you are sick of your job and want to re-train, well it will mean some nights the TV has to go off, you may have to come home from work and start studying, or give up a hobby at the weekend to find time to write a business plan. People who are successful in areas they want success have habits that have got them there. It’s a silly example but if all you do is eat pizza and drink beer, you’ll get fat and get drunk! Sometimes, people are lucky, they are in the right place at the right time and things just fall into place, but not often. Usually businesses are successful because people work hard, relationships are successful because people commit quality time to them. It’s easy to talk about what you want, but living life in a way that will help you get there, developing the habits of successful people is a lot harder - but it will fast track you to where you want to go. What are you willing to give up today for a better tomorrow Nina Lewis

Be prepared to Invest As a therapist and coach I would very rarely see clients without charging a fee. Clearly there is business sense in this but more importantly if a client is prepared to invest then they have made the decision they want to change, and they have placed value on improving things. As humans we invest, whether it’s time or money or both, in things that we think are important. So if you want success in any area, you need to invest.

Open your Eyes There is a tale we have all heard, about someone waiting to be rescued by God on the roof of a building in a flooded village. They have prayed and believed firmly God will rescue them, so they let the boat and the fireman and even the helicopter pass by. Later in heaven they ask God why he did not answer their prayer and , of course, the reply was that a boat, fireman and helicopter was sent to do the rescue. It’s just a tale but the truth is often that people say they are looking for ways to improve their lives yet pass up on every opportunity. They don’t apply for promotion, say no to a training course, they turn down business opportunities, or invitations to social events where they will meet people. It’s ‘safe’ to say you are waiting for the right opportunity but often you need to take the opportunities that present themselves and then make them right for you. And it will nearly always mean taking a risk of some sort, ‘what if it doesn’t work’ well you’ll learn from it anyway and be better equipped for the next opportunity.

Traditional Treacle Pudding Ingredients

Method

175g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 3 tbsp golden syrup, plus extra for drizzling 1 tbsp fresh white breadcrumbs splash brandy (optional but delicious) 175g golden caster sugar zest 1 lemon 3 large eggs, beaten 175g self-raising flour 2 tbsp milk clotted cream, to serve

42

Use a small knob of butter to heavily grease a 1-litre pudding basin. In a small bowl, mix the golden syrup with the breadcrumbs and brandy, if using, then tip into the pudding basin. Beat butter with sugar and zest until light and fluffy, then add eggs gradually. Fold in the flour, then finally add the milk. Spoon the mix into the pudding basin. Cover with a double layer of buttered foil and baking paper, making a pleat in the centre to allow the pudding to rise. Tie the foil securely with string, then place in a steamer or large pan containing enough gently simmering water to come halfway up the sides of the basin. Steam for 1½ hrs. Turn out onto a serving dish. Serve with lashings of clotted cream and a little extra golden syrup drizzled over if you wish.

I

for one, cannot wait until Euro 2016 in France next summer. I think it is fantastic to see so many of the home nations qualify and qualify in style. England may well have had a relatively easy group, but to win the matches that we have done is an excellent achievement and bodes well for the tournament, particularly if we can prepare in the right way with some tough friendly fixtures. I think many expected Roy Hodgson’s men to qualify though I can’t imagine many people were tipping Wales to qualify. It is the first time since 1958 that they have qualified for a major tournament and during that time, there have been a lot of top quality players that have not sampled football on the global stage including Ryan Giggs.

Chris Coleman deserves enormous praise for the way he has gone about his business and it was great to see them qualify from a difficult group. The same can be said about Michael O’Neill at Northern Ireland. I personally believe this is a huge achievement to get a country the size of Northern Ireland with their talent pool available to the Euro’s. They have a fanatical fan base and games at Windsor Park are always difficult for any opposition, but the results they have picked up away from home in this campaign have really stood out and they deserve all the plaudits they have received. The Republic of Ireland finished third in a difficult group behind Germany and Poland and go into the lottery of the play-offs, but they have done it 56

before and I am sure they can do it again. That leaves Scotland as the only home nation to not have a chance of qualifying, but even Gordon Strachan’s men flirted with qualification. I think this qualifying campaign can be looked upon as a huge success for the home nations and part of the reason for this I believe is the fact that all the managers are from their own country. I think that makes a massive difference at national level because they can really identify with the culture of football in that country. I can’t wait for the tournament – I think it is a wide open affair and any team can walk away with the trophy. What chance a home nation?

crazy world of pantomime and I can honestly say it was one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. My grandchildren absolutely loved seeing me on stage and I can’t wait to get out in front of a live audience again. It’s such a wonderful honour to be spending Christmas here and being part of this very special British festive tradition”. ’

This year’s pantomime at Milton Keynes Theatre is Aladdin!

Priscilla Presley, Hollywood royalty, TV icon and, yes, wife of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley, will be making wishes come true by bringing all the magic of the Christmas season to life as the Genie of the Lamp in the most spectacular pantomime on this side of the pond! Priscilla, who is best known for co-starring with Leslie Nielsen in the Naked Gun film series and for her role as Jenna Wade in Dallas - the most successful primetime soap opera ever – told us: “I’ve done some amazing things in my career but, three years ago, I was introduced to the

Aladdin is seasonal family entertainment at its best. The exotic setting in Old Peking is home to all the much-loved characters you could hope to meet in a Christmas show. Take Widow Twankey – please! Proprietor of the local Chinese laundry, this Dame is something to behold. And played by actor, comedian and national treasure Gary Wilmot, you can guarantee that it will all come out well in the wash.

Magic is what theatre is all about and, when it comes to the story of Aladdin, there’s plenty more enchantment in store. Wayne Sleep OBE, dancer, choreographer, actor and director, can now add ‘Genie (of the Ring)’ to his list of credits. Wayne, who last performed here in Cabaret a few years ago, is delighted to be returning to the stage of Milton Keynes Theatre.

Add to that amazing stellar line-up sensational songs played by a live band, dazzling dance routines, hilarious slapstick comedy and bags of audience participation, plus the magnificent sets and costumes Milton Keynes Theatre is famous for and what have you got? The best pantomime in the whole new world – oh yes it is!

You can’t have Aladdin without ‘a lad in’ the show who will cause hearts to melt and send tingles down the spine. Singer/songwriter and former A1 boyband member Ben Adams will be climbing aboard the magic carpet as the eponymous hero, Aladdin! Hooray!

A quiet night in... Spectacles by Sue Perkins

Spectacles is the hilarious, creative and incredibly moving memoir from much loved comedian, writer and presenter Sue Perkins. When I began writing this book, I went home to see if my mum had kept some of my stuff. What I found was that she hadn't kept some of it. She had kept all of it - every bus ticket, postcard, school report - from the moment I was born to the moment I finally had the confidence to turn round and say 'Why is our house full of this shit?' Sadly, a recycling 'incident' destroyed the bulk of this archive. This has meant two things: firstly, Dear Reader, you will never get to see countless drawings of wizards, read a poem about corn on the cob, or marvel at the kilos of brown flowers I so lovingly pressed as a child. Secondly, it's left me with no choice but to actually write this thing myself. This, my first ever book, will answer questions such as 'Is Mary Berry real?', 'Is it true you wear a surgical truss?' and 'Is a non-spherically symmetric gravitational pull from outside the observable universe responsible for some of the observed motion of large objects such as galactic clusters in the universe?' Most of this book is true. I have, of course, amplified my more positive characteristics in an effort to make you like me.
