The Difference between Breathwork and Meditation

They both bring more health, inner peace, and awareness, and they are complementary, but certainly not the same. What is the difference between breathwork and meditation? Breathing plays an important role in most types of meditation. And you can think of breathwork as a form of meditation. Yet they are not the same. In fact, for many, meditation — sitting still and focusing your attention on one single thing — is one of the hardest things to do. While doing breathing exercises is often a lot easier.

What is meditation?

Meditation is about (mental) silence. You close off from the outside world and concentrate completely on one specific reference point. That can be external or internal, something in your environment such as a sound, or something that is going on in your body or mind. Breathing is often taken as a reference point because you always have it with you and the rhythmic movement (breathing in and out) makes it easier to stay focused. While for meditation, it is not the intention to adjust your breathing rhythm, you should merely observe your natural breathing.

By focusing on your breath, sounds, images, sensations in your body, feelings, or thoughts, you learn to become fully aware of the present moment. Meditation is not about controlling or directing your thoughts. It is often thought that that is what it is all about, and motivation is lost if that does not work. This is also why many people find meditation difficult. Meditation is all about observing what presents itself, about accepting it and staying aware of it - and not getting caught up in the story. Thoughts, sensations, and emotions come and go, the art of meditation is to be 'only' aware of them and not to judge them. The recently deceased Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh described it beautifully: “To meditate does not mean to fight with a problem. To meditate means to observe.”

What is breathwork?

Breathwork can be described as consciously directing your breathing in a certain way, in order to influence certain processes in your body and mind. Unlike meditation, which is purely a cognitive process, breathwork requires you consciously change your breathing, with a specific goal or result. Depending on the technique or method, this may involve making your breathing deeper or more shallow, slower or faster, towards your stomach or your chest, through your nose or through your mouth or perhaps omitting the pauses between the inhalation and exhalation. There are many variables that you can play with in

order to achieve a certain result. The term breathwork is widely used. In fact, any conscious effort to direct your breathing is breathwork, from calming breathing exercises to more intense techniques like the Wim Hof breathing or Transformational Breathwork, where you breathe 'connected' for extended periods, i.e. leaving out the pauses between the inhalation and exhalation. With all types of breathwork, people are often amazed to experience the strong and instant effects, from breathing yourself into sleep to working through deep-seated emotional blocks and trauma.

Why are meditation and breathwork so different from each other?

They are both 'consciousness techniques' and therefore appear very much alike. Yet, breathwork and meditation are very different. Firstly, meditation is more cognitively or mentally focused. For example, you are observing your thoughts, your body, or your breathing. What are you experiencing in this present moment? Breathwork, on the other hand, is more physical, you are consciously adjusting your breathing rhythm. With this, you also immediately change your state of being, in the moment. In addition, for many people meditation is very complex. It is not easy to be quiet with your thoughts, it can even be very confronting. Moreover, meditation is something that you have to maintain permanently to deepen your practice and become more proficient at it. It takes a while to experience results (a calmer mind). Conscious breathing, on the other hand, can be done by anyone. And you immediately experience what it does to you, think of calming down or falling asleep. The effects can sometimes be triggered in seconds.

Why are breathwork and meditation so complementary?

Meditation and breathwork are both very beneficial, in fact, they are complementary. Meditation can be seen as a kind of philosophy or attitude to life. It’s a way to approach life with a more open mind and a more flexible mindset. It teaches you how to deal with the storm of thoughts in your head and take more conscious actions instead of living on autopilot. You can see your breathing as a tool or a technique that makes you aware of how you are doing (Is my breathing faster or shallower than normal? Maybe I am under stress?) and can also immediately offer an effective solution to calm yourself down (breathing more slowly triggers your relaxation response). It's simple, it works instantly, and you always have it with you: your breathing.

Midlife Madness

As I look back over my life I have had phases where I have dreamed a lot, and phases where I have hardly dreamed at all. Times when I’ve had regular nightmares waking up soaked in sweat and times when nights have been periods of long unbroken deep refreshing slumber. All of these phases seem to beyond my control.

Like everything in life there are seasons I guess and dreaming is no different. My husband can rarely remember his dreams but will often laugh and sometimes sing so I can only assume they are relatively happy dreams.

I remember after losing my parents I had vivid dreams about them, always positive, so positive in fact then when I woke I almost had to adjust once again to the loss - I understand I’m not alone in this.

But lately my dreams have taken on a more vivid quality and the emotions they have caused have been almost overwhelming. Maybe it is related to the drugs (all legal I must emphasise – the idea of taking something that would make you trip without the guarantee of that trip being good is foolish at best and abhorrent at worst).

One night I dreamt very vividly that hubby was having an affair!!! It was in glorious detail and I was utterly heartbroken. Poor old hubby had a tough morning and as my frostiness moved from a chill to ice cold -he kept reminding me that it was ‘just a dream’. I find it quite fascinating that you can wake up full of emotions from a dream.

I had another dream where I had been very irresponsible in leaving my grandchild alone while I ‘popped’ to London (clearly something I wouldn’t do)

and was in a blind panic trying to get back but losing bank card, trains being cancelled etc. No kidding I woke with my heart racing wanting to protest to everyone that I am a doting granny and simply wouldn’t do that!! Thankfully no-one thought I would anyway.

But in addition to the dreams I remember there are clearly some I don’t - though there are tell-tale signs!!

I spent days being puzzled by toothpaste in various unlikely places in the bedroom – on the bedding the wardrobe door the dressing table and numerous other places. I have no memory of dreaming about a toothpaste fight but it seems sleep action may also be happening now which opens up all sorts of new worries.

One morning I got up and assumed hubby or son had had a bit of a midnight feast and not cleared up very well. My detective work led me to believe it had been scrambled egg on toast. So I first made a jibe at hubby for not inviting me to the midnight nosh – but he swore it wasn’t him. Tackled son in a jovial way but he too denied the noshing! They both declared that it must have been me – but I have no memory of it whatsoever. Were they lying to make me feel like I am in fact madder than I think?

I hope not, in lots of ways but in other ways maybe that would be better than having become a sleep walker, I mean who knows what I might do next. If I put it all together I could have a terrible dream where I get really upset about something that hasn’t actually happened and then sleep walk and do something to exact some revenge for that which didn’t happen. It feels like a fairly scary prospect but I don’t know how to NOT dream. I’m not sure that’s an excuse that will stand up in court!

Staying Strong in Uncertainty

We need only look at our own government over recent months to see the uncertainty that exists in our society today and we know that uncertainty is something many of us find hard to cope with.

But like many other situations that can be challenging there are things we can do to make the experience easier.

Sharpen up your self-care

Hopefully you have some kind of self-care routine, going to the gym, or for walks, allowing yourself times to do the things you love. Taking time to seek out contact with friends and all the other things we do to take care of our mental and physical health. At times of increased stress, such as worrying about uncertainty it is important not to let stress de rail your self-care routines. In times of stress we need them more than ever and at times such as these you may find yoga or meditation particularly effective in managing stress.

Ask for support

We all have a network of people around us and most of us will go out of our way to support and help them in either practical or emotional ways. Yet often we may find it hard to ask for support from them when we need to. Perhaps we feel we should be strong on our own but being human we are made to live in community rather than isolation and in communities people help each other out.

Focus on what you can control

Experiencing uncertainty can make you feel out of control. Often that is the case, depending on the type of uncertainty. At times such as these it is worth concentrating on the things you can control. These might be really simple practical things, what you will eat, activities you might arrange etc but it might also include your attitude and responses to what is happening – response to the uncertainty you find yourself facing.

Be your own friend

This is something that is used in some forms of

therapy – ask you self what would you say to a friend if they came to you with what you are thinking and feeling. It’s a great way of crystallising and identifying what the specific issues you have about the situation are AND it allows you to think about solutions yourself. Is there something about the situation makes you feel afraid, frustrated, sad, upset or angry and what advice would you give to a friend in that situation?

Be careful where you get information

At times of uncertainty often rumours abound. You may hear all sorts of things that make you worry more or spark anxiety. If that is the case take steps to limit what you hear. If it is national situations that alarm you it may be worth not listening to the news. If it is other issues make sure that you only turn to reliable sources for information. The world and the media can be full of negative information, or things that make us dwell on the negative. Limit what you feed your mind – at times of uncertainty you often need positivity to feed your soul not negativity to drag you down.

Accept your feelings

Whatever the uncertainty may make you feel – it is okay. The feelings might not be nice but they aren’t wrong. We all react differently to different situations and however they make us feel that is okay. The feelings may not be nice but the best way to handle them is to accept them. We don’t have to dwell in the feelings but accepting them, noticing them and ‘sitting’ with them can be helpful but then it is time to move on. Distract yourself so something nice contact a mate, go for a walk, read a book anything that can help change your feelings a bit. But don’t beat yourself up about it.

Which leads us nicely to the idea that we need to be kind to ourselves. Whatever you are going through you deserve to be treated with kindness – not only by others but very importantly by ourselves.

Christmas Tipple Delicious Birds for Your Festive Feast

Turkey Tetrazzini

Preheat oven to 375F. Lightly butter a 9x13-inch casserole dish. In a small saucepan, melt 4 tbsp butter over medium-high heat. Add the flour and cook, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes. Whisk in the chicken broth and cream and bring to a simmer.

Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for about 5 minutes or until the sauce is thick and silky, whisking constantly as you go. Season with salt and pepper and set aside.

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the spaghetti as per package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

While the spaghetti is cooking, melt the remaining 1 tbsp butter in a large heavy-bottomed saucepan set over medium-high heat. Add the mushrooms and sauté for 5 minutes, or until the mushrooms are soft and have released most of their liquid. Add the wine and continue cooking for 5 minutes longer, or until most of the liquid in the pan has cooked off. Stir in the cream sauce, cooked turkey, peas, cooked spaghetti, and ½ cup Parmesan cheese. Test the seasoning, adding more salt and pepper as desired.

Transfer the mixture to the prepared casserole dish. Sprinkle evenly with the panko crumbs and remaining ¼ cup parmesan. Bake in preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until top is golden-brown and filling is bubbling and hot. Serve immediately with a sprinkling of fresh parsley.

Method
“This rich, creamy casserole made with spaghetti, mushrooms, turkey and peas smothered in Parmesan sauce is quite possibly the best thing that could ever happen to leftover roast turkey.”
Ingredients 5 tbsp butter 6 tbsp flour 2 cups chicken stock 1 ½ cups single cream 1 tsp salt 1 tsp fresh ground pepper 250g uncooked spaghetti, snapped in half 250g sliced mushrooms ¼ cup dry white wine 2 cups diced cooked turkey 1 cup frozen peas ¾ cup grated parmesan cheese ¾ cup breadcrumbs

Ingredients

Persian Squash & Pistachio Roast

Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas 4. Grease a 24cm loosebottomed tart tin with a little olive oil. Peel, deseed and chop the squash into 1cm chunks, then toss onto a baking tray with a drizzle of oil and sea salt and black pepper, and roast for 20 to 25 minutes. Peel and roughly chop the onion and garlic, and roughly chop the apricots and cranberries. Bash the cumin and coriander seeds, and zest the lemon. Pick and roughly chop the coriander, then roughly chop the chestnuts.

In a frying pan over a medium heat, cook the onion in a little oil for 10 minutes or until soft and sweet. Add the garlic and cook for another minute or so, until beginning to soften, then add all the spices and a little more oil. Cook for a couple more minutes, until it’s all smelling great. Remove from the heat and set aside.

Blitz the pistachios and almonds until they’re ground to a coarse powder with a little texture. Tip into a bowl with the quinoa or rice and dried fruit, then add the lemon zest, coriander and chestnuts. Beat and stir in the eggs and the onion. Take the squash out of the oven and mash half of it with the back of a fork, leaving the other half in chunks, then stir this into the mixture too. Pile the lot into the prepared tin and press down to flatten. Cook in the oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until set.

Take the nut roast out of the oven, then carefully remove it from the tin and place it on a serving platter.

Scatter the loaf with the feta (if using), and the pomegranate seeds.

Method
400 g squash Olive oil 1 red onion 2 cloves of garlic 50 g dried apricots 50 g sour cherries or cranberries 2 teaspoons cumin seeds 2 teaspoons coriander seeds 1 lemon 1 bunch of fresh coriander , (15g) 200 g tinned or vacuum-packed chestnuts ½ teaspoon ground turmeric 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 100 g shelled pistachios 100 g almonds 100 g cooked quinoa or brown rice 2 medium free-range eggs 1 pomegranate 200 g feta cheese , optional 1 lemon , optional 1 teaspoon coriander seeds , optional
“Flavours of Persian cooking are the perfect to compliment to veggie-based dishes at Christmas”

Festive Pavlova Wreath

Method

Preheat oven to 150C and line a large flat baking tray with non stick baking paper and draw a 30cm circle in the centre of the paper. Use an electric whisk or stand mixer to beat the egg whites to soft peaks. Add the sugar, a spoonful at a time and whisk on maximum speed until the egg whites are glossy and hold stiff peaks when the whisk is removed. Spoon the meringue onto the baking paper in large spoonfuls, using the circle you drew as a guide to create a wreath shape. Use the back of the spoon to create some swirls and merge the spoonfuls together. Run the spoon through the middle of the

meringue to create a shallow indentation for the cream and fruit to sit in.

Turn the oven down to 140C and bake for 1.5 hours. Once cooked, turn the oven off and leave the meringue inside until it has cooled completely. When ready to decorate, carefully peel off the baking paper and transfer the meringue to a serving plate.

Softly whip the cream and spoon over the meringue. Top with your chosen fruit and chopped chocolate covered clementines. For an extra flourish, drizzle with Seggiano Super Dense Fig Balsamic Glaze.

Ingredients

6 medium egg whites

330g caster sugar

500ml double cream

Selection of fresh fruit - figs, raspberries, clementines and pomegranate seeds

Fry’sFootieCorner

There have been some surprising results within the Premier League this season and there are one or two teams who have enjoyed a really strong opening few months to the campaign, none more so than Newcastle United and manager Eddie Howe.

When Newcastle were taken over they became one of the richest clubs in the world, but with that wealth doesn’t necessarily guarantee success. There have been countless examples of that. They have a plan, they want to build and improve year on year. Their business in the first couple of transfer windows have been savvy, they have brought in players with Premier League experience and a sprinkling of something different from South America.

What you have to remember is that Newcastle already had talented players on their books, they just needed strengthening in certain areas. What they do have now though is a very talented manager. Eddie Howe did wonders at AFC Bournemouth, bringing them through the leagues and competing in the Premier League. He was touted for the England job during that period of time. He has rightly been rewarded for what he has achieved at Newcastle so far with a long-term contract.

However, the expectations are now rising. The fans, who I have to say are some of the best in the world, will be looking upwards and not downwards. I think it is too soon for them to muscle into the top four, but they could

challenge for a top six spot and Europa League football and that would be an outstanding achievement and a great step forward.

It is hard to attract players to the club when you are not in Europe. That is where you make that next step. Once you are competing on the highest stage of club football, then you can attract some of the worlds best talent and they can certainly afford to do that.

I have to give credit to Frank Lampard at Everton too. Unlike Newcastle, they don’t have an open chequebook, they have to spend within their means, but they have enjoyed some good results and Lampard is getting them back to what you expect to see when Everton are on the television. Long may that continue because they are a big club.

Finally, a word for my former club Birmingham City. John Eustace is doing a wonderful job at St. Andrews. Yes, there are still problems off the pitch, but the fans believe in what he is doing and attendances on the rise. Hopefully it can continue because the Blues are still a huge club at that level.

Christmas in Austria

The festive period is a truly magical time in AustriaRomantic lights, seasonal treats, festive carols, and snowcovered roofs and treetops as far as the eye can see: Millions of visitors from around the world travel to Austria's cities and small towns from mid-November every year to join in the celebrations leading up to Christmas Eve. But what is it that makes the festive season so special in Austria - and what are the must-dos and must-sees?

Christmas Traditions in Austria

The Advent wreath and the Advent calendar are both used to count down the days to Christmas Eve. Every Sunday, a new candle on the wreath (there are four in total) is lit while the doors on the calendar are opened daily from 1 December, just like in the UK. Self-made calendars are especially popular. During the festive period, Austrians love to bake Christmas cookies and gingerbread and prepare punch and mulled wine - or buy them at the Christmas markets.

If you are in Austria on 5 or 6 December, friendly Saint Nicholas and his sinister companion Krampus might knock on your door. According to tradition, well-behaved children are rewarded with sweets, peanuts and tangerines, while the naughty ones might get a little word of warning. St. Nicholas is officially celebrated on 6 December and Krampus the day before. However, the two often show up as a pair. In traditional villages, people dress up in scary costumes made of sheepskin and wear carved masks with goat horns to mark Krampus Day.

Unlike in other countries, in Austria it's not Santa Clause or Father Christmas who brings the Christmas presents but the Christkind ("Christ Child", "Baby Jesus"), an angel-like figure with white feathery wings, a halo above its head, and blond curls. Children toss their Christmas letters into the

fireplace or put them on the window sill to make sure the Christkind gets it right. The presents are traditionally opened on Christmas Eve rather than Christmas Day. "Silent Night", written and performed for the first time on 24 December 1818 by Josef Mohr and Franz Gruber in Oberndorf, SalzburgerLand, is still the most popular carol to sing under and around the Christmas tree.

Christmas Markets in Austria

A stroll through one of the traditional Christmas markets is the highlight for many travelling to Austria during the festive period. Let us introduce you to some classics – and some lesser-known markets that are just as charming.

Christmas Markets in the City

Every major town has at least one Christmas market and it goes without saying that Vienna has the most. In fact, Austria's capital has more than 20, the most popular ones being in front of the town hall, at Schönbrunn Palace, and in the Spittelberg district. However, it's well worth looking into other cities, too!

Tirol's Innsbruck has markets right under the famous Golden Roof, on the main square and the shopping street Maria Theresien Straße, as well as at Hungerburg Castle, where you will sip your punch while enjoying spectacular views over the town. Bonus: You can hop on a ski lift right in the heart of town before or after the markets! An annual highlight is Innsbruck's Christkind Parade (18 December 2022), featuring the Christkind riding down MariaTheresien-Straße and the historic lanes in a splendid carriage, accompanied by a marching band, shepherds, angels, sheep, and some 600 local children.

Then there's Salzburg. Its Christmas Market at Residenzplatz was first mentioned in the 15th century, and

is perfect to sample all the local festive delights. Just outside the city, the romantic Advent Magic at Hellbrunn Palace awaits. Its over 700 conifers in the inner courtyard are decorated with 10,000 red Christmas balls and strands of lights every year, while the palace's windows are turned into an XXL advent calendar.

Christmas Markets at the Lake Romantics and lovebirds will surely enjoy Austria's Christmas markets at the water. Salzkammergut's Lake Wolfgangsee and its villages St. Wolfgang, Strobl and St. Gilgen turn into a Christmas wonderland every year, with markets, open fires, and musical events. The 16 m high, floating “Peace Lantern” on the lake, just off St. Wolfgang's shore, is the official symbol of the region. The best way to enjoy all the festive decorations and markets is an advent-themed boat tour.

Another great region for markets at the lake is Austria's southernmost province Carinthia. Head to Klagenfurt, then further on to Lake Wörthersee and check out all the stalls and festive lights in Pörtschach and the famous floating Advent wreath in Velden.

Christmas Markets in the Mountains

It almost goes without saying that Austria's ski and Alpine regions, too, top up their game to get their guests into the festive spirit.

Besides Innsbruck, Tyrolean resorts such as Kitzbühel, Seefeld, St. Johann, and Kufstein all have their own Christmas markets. Zell am See – Kaprun in SalzburgerLand has several of them, with a handful right in the heart of the skiing towns and one at Kaprun castle, featuring more than 30 stalls, processions, and lots of regional delights. Obertauern and Bad Hofgastein are also well worth considering for a mix of skiing and Christmas magic.

In Austria's westernmost province Vorarlberg, Kleinwalsertal and Schwarzenberg in Bregenzer Forest are the go-to places for festive celebrations and markets amidst the Alps, while Montafon holds several Christmas-themed concerts throughout the Advent period.

SISTERS ARE BACK

This sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship, sisterhood and music tells the hilarious story of the disco diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a murder.

Deloris Van Cartier is an aspiring singer in Philadelphia, where she is auditioning to perform at her gangster boyfriends nightclub. Deloris believes that Curtis is going to introduce her to a big producer, but is upset when he tells her she is not ready. Hurt and rejected, Deloris decides to break up with him, but when she goes to find him she accidentally sees him kill one of his cronies. Deloris runs to the police, who place her in hiding at a convent until Curtis is brought to trial.

At first, Deloris feels as though it will be the worst thing in the world, chafing against the constraints of convent life and an immovable Reverend Mother, but once

she is introduced to the struggling choir at the convent, everything changes. She finds that many of the nuns at the convent are not that different from her, and that they are quite fun to be around.

They help give her a bigger purpose in her life, showing her a genuine love and affection that was missing prior to her arrival at the convent. Sister Act is a joyous show that uses music to bring different communities, and lifestyles, together.

With songs inspired by Motown, soul and disco, this joyous and hilarious musical is one nostalgia-filled trip back to the 70s that you will never forget.

Sister Act is appearing at Milton Keynes Theatre from Monday 21st – Saturday 26th November 2022. Tickets are available from www.atgtickets.com/MiltonKeynes

Weekend Starts Here....

Small Angels by Lauren Owen

When Chloe turns the key to Small Angels, the church nestled at the edge of Mockbeggar Woods where she is to be married, she is braced for cobwebs and dust. What she doesn't expect are the villagers' concerned faces, her fiancé's remoteness, or the nagging voice in her head that whispers to her of fears she didn't even know she had.

Something in the woods is beginning to stir, to creep closer to the sleeping houses. Something that should have been banished long ago.
