Trending on The Catwalk

Last month saw the most famous fashionistas and style icons grace the Capital for London Fashion Week. Hairstylist to the stars, Asgar Saboo, shows us how to recreate their styles The glossy pony A perfect look for the most chic labels like Stella McCartney, this style will look great and accentuate next season’s trends. This is also a celebrity favourite which oozes Hollywood glamour and sophistication, often seen on the likes of Olivia Palermo and Cara Delevigne. Use your straighteners to get your hair silky smooth and once the pony tail is in place, fix with Kirby grips and a high shine fixing spray to get the most fabulous, glossy finish.

Do the twist A halo braid is becoming very popular for attending fashion shows and the most exclusive parties, often favoured by the likes of Sienna Miller. This works well for eccentric fashion looks, but I prefer this style when it’s matched with the laidback, minimalist clothes of labels like Joseph and Paul Smith. Start with freshly blow dried hair to get rid of the frizz, then starting from the left side of the head, loosely French plait the hair working clockwise across your head, finishing at the nape of the neck to complete the halo.

The traditional French braid It may be London Fashion Week, but that doesn’t mean that you should forget about styles which aren’t traditionally seen as British. A French braid is timeless, and since it’s such a quick style, this is perfect for those mornings when you’re tired from last night’s party but need to rush to work. In fact, this style is great when it looks

effortless, so don’t be afraid to leave the braid slightly messy or with a few hairs left loose by your face. However, make sure you fix with hairspray to ensure that the style stays in place and looks chic all day long. Tousled lob (long bob) With celebrities like Margot Robbie embracing the long bob, we saw many fashionistas sporting this hairstyle at London Fashion Week. However, to make sure you stand out from the crowd, use a salt or texture spray to give your hair that little bit of volume to complete this look. Using a small round brush, blow dry sections of the hair, rolling away from your face, complete the process with a curling iron, curling an inch from the root, leaving the root straight. Finally run your fingers through the hair to break up the waves.

Curls world This year sees a welcome return to eighties fashion, so it’s a great time to embrace volume and curls! Starting from the back of your hair, grab a small section and use a 10mm curling wand to achieve tight curls. Try to avoid curling big sections of your hair at once, as the curls may not last as long and won’t look as eighties appropriate. You should finish by applying hairspray to your hair, holding the can diagonally and away from your face. This look will show how trend aware you are and will set you ahead of the crowd, so don’t be afraid to add as much volume as you dare – use a comb to gently backcomb and set with hairspray. 10

Things You Need To Give Up In Order To Move Forward

Life is all about continuous progress:

the ability to move forward and to achieve greatness. You cannot hope to ever achieve such things if you are holding on to things from your past.

can make all the difference.

3. Expectations The sooner you stop expecting people to act in certain ways, the happier you will be. Allow yourself to be pleasantly surprised by the actions of others instead of becoming disappointed when they don’t follow through in the manner in which you thought they would. You can only control your actions, not those of others, so it’s simply in your best interest to let people act the way they will without creating false hope.

All this will do is prevent you from reaching your full potential. By holding on to past ideals, you are selfsabotaging any progress you hope to make. You need to make peace with your past and learn to accept things the way they are, whether it makes sense or not. Coming to peace with certain realities is what will allow you to move on from the past in order to have a great future. Once you let go of the things in life that are holding you back, the quicker you will be able to achieve your goals. You need to give up certain things in order to fully commit yourself to the life you want to obtain.

4. Mistakes you made in the past The past is over and if you have done all you can do to make up for your mistakes, then there is nothing else you can do at this point. If people throw this in your face, then you need to cut these people out of your life. It’s as simple as that. Everyone makes mistakes, it’s a part of growing up. As long as you correct your mistakes and learn from them, then that should be all there is to it.

Start eliminating your concern regarding the following and see what a difference that will make in your life.

1. Other people’s opinion This is something far too many people worry about. This is inherently problematic, as you cannot change someone else’s opinion. Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion even if you do not agree with it or it’s completely inaccurate. You just have to concentrate on living the best possible life for yourself that you can. People who engage in incessant gossip are unhappy with their own lives so they seek to degrade others to try and enhance their selfworth. The kicker is that this will leave them just as miserable as before.

2. Explanations At one point or another, you are going to realize that sometimes there just isn’t a reasonable explanation as to why something occurred the way it did. You can spend all the time you want rehashing things in your mind, trying to make sense of a situation, but honestly you may never come to a realization. This is something that takes a lot of time and experience to realize, but once you do, it really

12

5. Dwelling on heartbreak Just because it didn’t work out with one person doesn’t mean it won’t work out with someone else. Rather than allowing your past to pull you down and harmfully impact your future, use your experiences to grow and learn about yourself. The people you meet in life come at the time they do for a reason. Don’t waste your time replaying incidents over and over in your head trying to make sense of them. If your relationship didn’t work out, it’s okay, take it as a lesson learned and carry that into your future. 6. Grudges There is no reason to actively resent another person. It doesn’t harm the other person as much as it will harm you. Why are you focusing your energy on someone you don’t even care about? Do you really think they are wasting their valuable time concerning themselves with your actions? Just let it be — don’t engage in malicious behavior, you are beyond that. Leave whatever happened to cause this tension in the past and move on.

insecure. D o n ’ t consume yourself with worry about what other people are thinking — chances are they are way more concerned with themselves than you. Everything you have done up until this point is enough and has gotten you to this place in your life. Confidence is a state of mind; if you believe you are a good person with good values, then it should be enough to build your confidence. Insecurity is something that holds people back more than anything else and it’s a damn shame because the person making you feel the most insecure is yourself.

7. Failing to appreciate what you have Instead of focusing on what you think you are missing from your life, try and focus on what you are so fortunate to have. It’s far too easy to look around at the people you surround yourself with and become jealous of what they have. Everyone is fighting a battle within that no one knows about. Just because someone has materialistic possessions does not mean he or she is internally happy. Be grateful for the things that are most important to you and relish them instead of focusing on what you believe to be missing. You have made it this far, so wouldn’t it only make sense that you have everything you need?

10. Dealing with drama The only thing dealing with drama will lead to is anxiety. Why are people drawn to this? I honestly don’t understand. You need to surround yourself with people who are constantly pushing themselves for the better, if you are consistently surrounding yourself with negative people, this will only hinder your progression. Think back to all of the drama you have dealt with in your life and think about if it really has any effect on your life now. The answer to that question is usually no and the time put into dealing with that drama is just not worth it.

8. Excuses You have to seize each opportunity that is presented to you and immerse yourself completely. Do not make excuses because you will only hinder your own personal progress and prevent you from achieving your goals. If you want results, you need to stop making excuses. Work hard and take advantage of all possibilities because that is the only way you will garner the largest and most beneficial results. 9. Insecurity By this time in your life, there really is no reason to be

Midlife Madness Accepting Defeat

I

’m sure we all have things that we have tried over long periods of time to achieve, I’m not talking about big stuff here but those little battles that we all have on an almost daily basis, like maintaining some vague sense of order in your wardrobe, kitchen cupboards, bathroom cabinets, handbags or even ‘that’ drawer – ours is in the kitchen but I know the particular position varies from home to home, though surprisingly not the contents, you know the drawer where you put the key that you know fits a lock somewhere, the weird looking gizmo that you know you’ll need the day AFTER you throw it out and numerous other sundry items of dubious benefit but somehow essential in their own way.

shampoo and conditioner at the same time even when you always use them at the same time! Not worth it! Simply switch to two in one or get over it. Then there is the puzzling way that empty containers keep creeping back. Like the empty shower gel surely whoever used it last would put the container in the bin? Same with the carton of orange juice in the fridge, which if not empty, has about enough to wet the whistle of a small winged creature - who blatantly shouldn’t be in the fridge any way. The list is much longer of course, including milk, mayonnaise, sauces of any variety, plus numerous ‘shared’ toiletry items like toothpaste, hand wash and toilet roll. The last being particularly irritating, I’m sure you’ll agree. It really isn’t rocket science is it? It’s empty, no one else will be able to use it therefore put it in the bin! Common sense, surely!!!

Well, I have given up some of the battles because I have learned they are futile, I have had periods of Canute like diligence but realised in my advancing years the futility. So I am passing on this wisdom to you so that you can stop wasting time and effort in some of the day to day battles.

Other things that spring to mind as battles to avoid due to their complete unwinability are cords on hairdryers (tongs and straighteners too, but to a lesser degree). They will tangle or spiral into a complete knot – it is almost like another universal law. It doesn’t matter how many times you try to unwind them or whatever degree of due diligence you use – they will NOT remain straight. It’s the same with earphone cords and if, like me, you might want to enjoy a bit of music or a catch-up episode on your tablet on the way home on the train or bus– let’s be honest it would be a godsend if it they didn’t tangle. but they do, so my advice don’t bother because you will spend half the time untangling the blessed things, no matter how carefully you put them away.

Socks will be parted no matter how many times you pair them. I know that it seems to be in vogue to wear odd socks (I can’t! It is never going to happen, in fact I’m fairly sure I would feel so unbalanced that I’d actually fall over) but I think this is an essential compromise rather than a life choice because no matter how many times you put wayward socks back into pairs, they seem hell bent on escaping. Let’s be honest they have lots of opportunities, on their way to the laundry bin, washing machine, onto the line (tumble dryer or radiator) or when being put away. They even seem to manage it when they are neatly paired and in a drawer. So my advice is simple, don’t bother! Neither is it worth trying to make sure pairs of other things function together (except glasses which are really one item aren’t they). Shampoo and conditioner that you bought as a pair will have very different lifespans – who, has ever got through identical sized containers of

Oh, and just to finish, you know when you deliberate in a restaurant for ages about which dish to get, then having made your agonising choice, find someone else you are with ordered your ‘alternative’. It will always look better. It’s just the way it is!! Move on!! 18

Treatment of the Month

Olaplex Hair Treatment

traditional conditioner and smells good enough to eat – containing the same active ingredient to repair any remaining bonds missed in step one, and help restore the strength and structure of hair, this is applied all over and then a fabulous scalp massage is carried out whilst rubbing it in thoroughly – another ten minutes with this on before my hair was rinsed, shampooed and conditioned.

It’s arrived – after becoming a massive hit in the US last year Olaplex is said to be a favourite amongst the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez and the good news is it is now available in the UK – So what exactly is it?

It’s a hair treatment that works by repairing bonds within the hair shaft, known as disulphide bonds. These are broken during the process of hair colouring, blow drying, straightening and curling, resulting in hair that is weak and damaged, by repairing the bonds the condition and texture of the hair improves significantly.

Once blow dryed it was the moment of truth – I could not believe how much softer, fuller bodied and shiny my hair looked, truly amazing this is definitely something you need to shout from the rooftops about.

Urbanite Hair in Bedford is now offering this treatment to their clients and as I have coloured, thin, and badly damaged hair, I thought I would go along and see if it does what it says on the tin!

Olaplex can be used as a stand-alone treatment to re-boot heat-damaged and coloured hair like mine, or it can also be used as part of the hair colouring process, by adding Olaplex Bond Multiplier into the hair colour and following with step 2.

On arrival at the salon Maria the salon owner explains the whole process to me. I then head over to the basin where step one of the treatment begins with the clear liquid, known as Bond Multiplier, applied all over my hair until it is saturated (the Bond Multiplier is responsible for repairing the hair bonds). Making sure I am completely comfortable, this is left to work its magic on my hair for ten minutes. Ten minutes gone, it’s time for the next stage the Bond Perfector, a creamy white liquid that looks more like

This is definitely a treatment no woman should miss out on!

Learning about

Thoughts, Attitudes, Words and Behaviour

oct2015new.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 23/09/2015 22:14 Page 21

Man, alone, has the power to transform his thought into physical reality: man, alone, can dream and make his dreams come true. Napolean Hill

Words Like thoughts, words are powerful. Obviously what we say comes from our attitudes, which stem from our thoughts. So take a minute and think about what you say about important things in your life. Are your words positive and full of optimism or are they negative and always expecting the worst. They are a window on your inner thoughts and attitudes. So if what is coming out of your mouth in your words is negative, the chances are your thoughts and attitudes are full of negativity too. And it’s all your own work! The thoughts were yours and so was the attitude but these can and need to be changed if you want a more positive fulfilling life.

Thoughts It’s sometimes easier to see how powerful thoughts are when we think of negative thoughts. Imagine if you are afraid of something and then you have to face it, flying, a particular animal or water for example, the thought itself ‘the fear’ is actually powerful enough to make you feel very real physical symptoms. So someone who is afraid of flying will often experience panic when the plane takes off, even though everything is safe and going to plan. The thoughts and fear of what might happen is so powerful it causes physical changes, the racing heart or difficulty breathing for example in a panic attack.

Remember: you are the only person who thinks in your mind! You are the power and authority in your world. Louise Hay

But if we really begin to take on board how powerful thoughts are we can then realise that same power can be used positively.

Behaviour Our thoughts, attitudes and words all have an impact on our behaviour, on the things we do, the way we act and that, in turn is what creates our world. So if you think life is one long test of endurance then your attitude will be negative, your words probably will be too and your behaviour will follow suit. In essence you are creating, or at least perpetuating a negative lifestyle. But it doesn’t have to be this way, everyone has the power to change and so often when I work with people they put a lot of effort into changing their behaviour (usually unsuccessfully) but no effort into changing their thoughts. Yet this is where behaviour begins.

Thoughts are like powerful energy magnets: they attract matching energy patterns. This means that whatever we focus our attention on will grow, so be sure to accentuate the positive. Unsourced Quote on Pinterest

Attitudes This happens in all sorts of situations of course – and our attitudes will also cause us to interpret things in particular ways, which then strengthen our thoughts and attitudes. If someone has a low self-esteem for example, they have no confidence in their abilities and if they apply for a job and aren’t successful, they will be sure that it will have been because they are pretty useless, not because there were hundreds of applicants for the job or that they wanted someone with more experience. Someone who has a high self-esteem and generally positive attitude will no doubt think it wasn’t the right job for them and something better will be just around the corner. It’s down to the attitude.

Again it’s easier to see how this works by using a negative example. Someone who has experienced rejection will think they are unlovable and that everyone will reject them sooner or later. Their attitude will be that people are not to be trusted because they will let them down and reject them Their words will often be negative about either themselves or relationships and they will behave in such a way as to make darned sure they are actually rejected. From their thoughts stems a whole negative cycle. But it can be changed and the place to start is by changing the thought patterns.

Similarly imagine meeting someone for the first time and imagine that you have heard they are a gossip, a bully and a fraud! What would your attitude be? Negative I suspect or guarded at the very least – sensibly. The way you think about them, in this case because of what you have heard, will have created the attitude you have towards them.

The mind is everything. What you think you become. Buddha

Many of our attitudes are much more general, the way we think about the world, our jobs, success, money, relationships, but all of these attitudes stem from thoughts. Get the thoughts right, as in ensure they are positive and our attitudes will be more positive which in turn will ‘attract’ more positivity into our lives.

Eight Ways to Love your Food More

With Mindful Eating

M

indless eating is the habit you might recognise most when you’re at home: eating while watching your latest box set on the TV is a classic example. Your eyes are on the screen and you’re automatically eating from a bag of popcorn, crisps or chocolate.

awareness and of being in the present moment. And the possible benefits of applying this practice to your eating habits are plentiful. Mindful eating may help you to: • Develop a healthy and conscious relationship with food • Increase your enjoyment of food • Stop eating unnecessary calories • Lose some excess weight and maintain a healthy weight • Identify eating habits and patterns that you want to change • Gain control over what you eat and why you eat

The same can happen at work – do you ever find yourself staring at your computer screen and eating simultaneously? Or maybe you’re taking a break and your eyes are glued to your phone as you eat. Because you’re concentrating on your screen, you’re not paying attention to what you’re eating or how it tastes. So, not only are you missing out on savouring the flavours, you could be at risk of eating more than you should.

How to eat mindfully

These are my top tips for getting the most out of meals and your interaction with food and drink, wherever you are.

1. Chew your food slowly. Not only will this help your digestion, you feel more satisfied with your meal. Much of the time we eat past the point of fullness because we aren’t recognising when we’ve had enough. That’s why we can sometimes feel too full, bloated and uncomfortable after meals.

2. Get to know your food. Have you bought it from a chain eatery or did you make it at home? Knowing exactly what’s in your food and where it comes from helps you engage with what you’re eating. Try making yourself some food at home to bring to work; you’ll notice the difference.

How can mindful eating help you? Mindful eating is the exact opposite of mindless eating. Mindfulness has been proven to be really helpful for a number of conditions. It's all about developing a sense of 26

oct2015new.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 23/09/2015 22:14 Page 25

3. Register the taste, texture and smell. This very much applies the principles of being mindful. Whatever you’re eating, consciously engage with the texture of it in your mouth, the smells, colour and presentation of it. 4. Give your food your full attention. Try eating without reading or looking at a screen. When was the last time that you did this? I challenge you to try it and give your meal your undivided attention.

5. Limit temptation. Pre-portion your food so you’re not tempted to eat too much. When you’re busy and you need to eat on the go or meet a deadline, it can be tempting to skip a meal or grab a convenient snack. But rather than let those moments catch you out – have foods to hand that are healthy and pre-portioned. That way you’re not going to accidentally eat too much without realising it. One of the best things I’ve seen is the pre-portioned fruit snack packs you can get in the supermarket. They are especially good for more exotic fruits like pineapple and mango.

7. Check you're really hungry. When you feel hungry, just take a second before getting something to eat. Ask yourself this question: ‘Am I hungry?’ Really think about it – if you’re unsure, try waiting 20 minutes. Then ask yourself again to see if you’re really and truly hungry. Feel a snack-attack coming on? Think about when you last ate something. If it was less than three hours ago, it might not really be hunger. Maybe you just need a break to stretch your legs, or get a drink of water instead. 8. Take the time. My final point is really important: I urge you to make time for your meals. They are essential to your health and wellbeing. I know what it’s like to be busy and on the go, but making time for regular meals will keep you energised throughout your day, fuelling your body and mind as you go. Dr Pablo Vandenabeele Clinical Director of Mental Health at Bupa UK www.bupa.co.uk

6. Are you full yet? Being mindful when eating focuses your attention, so you can register when you’ve eaten enough and are satisfied. Slowing down and learning to recognise when you’re full can help stop weight gain, indigestion and a bloated, sluggish feeling.

Deliciously rich and creamy, this comforting dish is simple to make and just perfect for a midweek family meal

Ingredients 500g mixed mushrooms 3 tbsp butter 2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 1 tsp sweet paprika 150ml white wine 1tbsp tomato paste 300ml chicken stock 700g boned chicken thighs 2 tbsp sour cream 2 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp chopped dill 1 tbsp chopped parsley

Method Finely slice mushrooms. Melt 2tbsp butter and 2 tbsp olive oil in a heavy non-stick frying pan and gently cook the onion for 10 minutes, until soft and translucent. Add mushrooms and cook for 5 minutes. Add sea salt, pepper, paprika and wine and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and cook for 5 minutes until the wine is absorbed. Add the tomato paste and stock and simmer, stirring, for 5 minutes. Lightly bash the chicken thighs flat and cut across the grain into thin strips. Heat the remaining butter and oil in a second pan and cook the chicken in batches over medium heat until lightly golden. Tip the chicken and any pan juices into the mushroom suace, add the sour cream, mustard and dill, and simmer gently, stirring, for 5 minutes. Scatter with parsley and serve with rice.

Ombra Prosecco Frizzante NV The fact is that really good Prosecco is better than middle of the road Champagne. And less than half the price. What makes it so yummy? Firstly, it's a lovely wine even without the bubbles - fruity and crisp with a tangerine freshness and not to dry. Secondly, it only has half the bubbles of Champagne - so it is much gentler to drink. You'll love this wine even if you don't like Champagne! £11.99, Virgin Wines

W

e are a couple of months into the new season and I think if we are all honest, we did not expect Chelsea to be in the bottom half of the Premier League table, but Jose Mourinho has had a nightmare start to the campaign and has had internal battles to fight as well as those on the pitch.

Players’ who were arguably the stars of their season last term have struggled massively this time around and injuries to key personnel have left them short of cover. Not to mention of course the suspension to striker Diego Costa following the incident against Arsenal. While Chelsea battle their way back into form (and let’s be honest, I am sure they will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season), other teams are revelling in unprecedented starts. We have already witnessed some of the biggest shocks the Premier League

has seen with West Ham United being at the heart of those results. The Hammers, managed now by Slaven Bilic, have already beaten Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City – this is the first time in their Premier League history that they have done so away from home. I am delighted for my good mates David Gold and David Sullivan and I really believe they can push for the top six this year. Credit also must go to Claudio Ranieri at Leicester City, who has carried on the good work that Nigel Pearson did at the back end of last season. Jamie Vardy is a player that we know well at Peterborough United because we were close to signing him prior to his departure from Fleetwood Town. He is now in the England squad and part of the reason (apart from his goals) is his sheer work rate and that 58

is the minimum you ask of a player. He is a pest, he never gives up and he gets his team-mates playing with the same intensity. While teams fight at the top and teams fight at the bottom, arguably the greatest success story in recent years in the Premier League continues to be told at those clubs punching above their weight in the middle section of the league. Swansea City, managed by the excellent Gary Monk, play football the right way and are a joy to watch, while Mark Hughes has brought in flair and top quality players to supplement an already talented squad at Stoke City. And finally, Alan Pardew has assembled a top quality squad at Crystal Palace – I just wish they would play Dwight Gayle a little bit more!

Powerful Performance and Effortless Driving

Ferrari 488 Spider

T

he Ferrari 488 Spider is the latest chapter in Maranello’s ongoing love affair with open-top V8 sports cars, a story that started with the targa-top version of the 308 GTB – the immortal 308 GTS – and which ultimately resulted in the full convertible Spider architecture. Starting with the RHT (Retractable Hard Top), around which the entire car was developed, every area of the 488 Spider has been designed to set new technological benchmarks for the sector. The result is the most powerful and innovative Ferrari

Spider ever built, a car that marries the extraordinary prowess of the 488 GTB coupé’s mid-rear V8 with the joy of tackling even the most challenging roads surrounded by nature’s heady aromas and colours and accompanied by an inimitable Ferrari engine soundtrack. The RHT, which debuted on the 458 Spider, was a world-first for such a solution on a mid-rear engined car and has rendered traditional softtops obsolete as it is not only lighter (- 25 kg) but also provides better protection from noise and the elements. 60

At the very heart of the car is, of course, the 3902cc turbo-charged V8 which set a new benchmark for this type of architecture. Thanks to a maximum power output of 670 cv and the smooth, progressive torque delivery in higher gears provided by the Variable Torque Management system, the 488 Spider sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 3 seconds flat and from 0 to 200 km/h in 8.7 seconds. These performance figures are accompanied by a throttle response time of just 0.8 seconds which essentially eliminates the turbo lag typical of this kind of engine. In line with Ferrari tradition, the 488 Spider

oct2015new.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 23/09/2015 22:19 Page 59

also has its own unique and distinctive soundtrack to reflect its performance. This is also the most aerodynamically efficient Ferrari Spider ever built, thanks to a series of complex aero solutions. Maranello’s engineers managed to guarantee optimal downforce whilst reducing drag (two normally mutually-exclusive objectives) by developing several innovative devices, including a blown spoiler and an aerodynamic underbody incorporating vortex generators. The 488 Spider’s dynamic behaviour

is exceptional with the accent very much on the ease with which it can be driven on the limit. To achieve this engaging handling balance the mechanical set-up was honed in tandem with the electronic control systems which now include an evolved version of Ferrari’s side slip angle control (Side Slip Control 2 – SSC2). Over all, in fact, vehicle response times are 9% more rapid than the previous Spider.

metallic particles suspended in the paint give the bodywork a gloss that underscores its sculptural volumes. Its unusual iridescent effect is created by the two-layer paintwork. The livery colours are mirrored in the cabin which mixes black leather with extensive Rosso Cremisi, exactly as per the classic track car. The boot is lined in Alcantara and carbon-fibre as befits a Ferrari designed to epitomise the marque’s sporty DNA.

The 488 Spider also debuts a new colour designed to enhance its forms. The Blu Corsa livery almost seems to meld with the sky overhead, and 61

The Beauty of Burnham Where People Come to Relax

oct2015new.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 26/09/2015 13:51 Page 63

A

shooting on the staircase, outlaws in the forest nearby, some may say we were brave to visit the stunning Burnham Beeches Country House Hotel for an overnight stay – well if it’s good enough for film crews it’s good enough for us. Those of you that are of a certain age may well remember the 70’s hit TV programme The Professionals – the episode called The Ojuka Situation was filmed here, with a Russian businessman being shot on the stairs and if you’re not old enough to remember this I’m sure you’ll remember Disney’s Robin Hood – which along with Harry Potter had some of their scenes shot in the nearby Burnham Beeches woods! All this excitement and we hadn’t even unpacked originally built in 1727 as a hunting lodge in what was then part of Windsor Park, as a house it afforded rest to the Royal hunting parties before resuming the chase. In 1737 the English Poet, Thomas Gray, visited his uncle who owned the house and was inspired to write his 'Elegy in a Country Churchyard'. Later, the house, known as Cant’s Hill, became the property of the Clifton Brown family, famous for their association with the Palace of Westminster. Steeped in history Burnham Beeches has been sympathetically restored whilst clearly keeping its Georgian origins. It was a glorious sunny day when we arrived at Burnham, the perfectly manicured lawn was scattered with outdoor furniture making it ideal for relaxing outside with family or friends whilst enjoying a drink from the bar, Afternoon Tea or just relaxing with a good book. Greeted by a lovely receptionist we checked in and headed up to our room to unpack – We had a beautiful, spacious Junior Suite, decorated in a contemporary style with a glass wall dividing the lounge area from the bedroom thus giving the impression of even more space. A Queen-sized bed adorned the bedroom space, in the lounge a mirrored coffee table, and sofa bed surrounded by soft furnishings complemented the decor perfectly, you could be mistaken for thinking you were in your own individual apartment. I could have happily stayed in the suite, but the temptation of Afternoon Tea proved too great –We took this in The Georgian Bar and Lounge with its large Georgian Fireplace and floor to ceiling draped windows this room seemed to whisk you back in time,

you could be mistaken for thinking you were sipping tea in the drawing room of an Agatha Christie story. Served with a glass (or two) of Laurent Perrier Champagne, fresh sandwiches, and the most delicious homemade cakes and scones – we just sat back relaxed and enjoyed the whole experience. Dinner in the evening was taken in the Rosette Awarded Grays Restaurant. With its dark wood paneled walls and elegant décor, this room was a real treat – as was the food that was served in it. The menu, is classic and contemporary with a selection of the most delicious dishes - including - Salad of home smoked chicken breast, crispy pancetta and poached quail eggs, and hollandaise sauce - White crab, mango and spring onion tian, radish and soy dressing Chargrilled baby courgettes and runner beans salad, feta cheese mousse with smoked paprika dressing Pan fried sea bream fillets, rainbow cauliflowers, turned potato with beurre blanc - Fillet of beef, spinach puree, pomme Anna, port baby onion and red wine jus, - English rump of lamb, cumin couscous, grilled vegetable, sauce vierge. The Shawshank Redemption

Celebrating the 21st anniversary of the nation’s favourite movie. Fear will hold you prisoner, hope can set you free. Bill Kenwright presents a new stage production inspired by the classic film The Shawshank Redemption.

The Shawshank Redemption is widely considered to be the number one all-time movie, Stephen King’s classic story examines desperation, injustice, friendship and hope behind the claustrophobic bars of a maximum security penitentiary.

Based on the classic film, Shawshank tells the story of Andy Dufresne who is handed a double life sentence for the brutal murder of his wife and her lover, despite protesting his innocence. Incarcerated at the notorious Shawshank facility, he quickly learns that no one can survive alone. Andy strikes up an unlikely friendship with the prison fixer Red, and things take a slight turn for the better. However, when Warden Stammas decides to bully Andy into subservience and exploit his talents for accountancy, a desperate plan is quietly hatched…

Two of TV’s best loved leading men, Ian Kelsey (Doctors, Casualty and Emmerdale) and Patrick Robinson (Casualty, Midsomer Murders), star in this thrilling new production of The Shawshank Redemption.

Out and About This month saw us at:

Christmas Press Shows I love visiting London at Christmas, there’s something magical about it – and so visiting Christmas Press Shows in September was like Christmas had come early for me. From the most delicious festive food on offer at Selfridges to the endless beauty products from major brands including Jo Malone, ESPA and Babyliss – I was in my element already planning Christmas gift pages along with a Christmas gift list all for myself - I will be extremely disappointed if my stocking is not bulging this Christmas.

Peterborough Italian Festival Cathedral Square in Peterborough played host to a fabulous weekend of all things Italian, including dancing, singing, cars and, of course, food! With authentic dishes produced by Carluccio’s and fresh Italian baked pizza this was a foodie lovers dream. Mix this with the fabulous entertainment including our favourite singer Sergio Marinaro - if you didn’t manage to make it this year then make sure you have it in your diary for next year!

The Embankment’s Cheese and Port Night The Embankment in Bedford was the lovely setting for an evening of Port and Cheese, along with a delicious main meal and wine in between. Do you know the difference between that £80 bottle of Port or the £30 bottle, well we certainly found out! And as for cheeses, if you’re a cheese lover (which I am), you’ll love the variety including Finn, Lanark Blue and my absolute favourite Driftwood (not that I’d even heard of it before this evening let alone eaten it!). A fabulous atmosphere and a great way to spend an evening. The Embankment holds their Cheese and Port evening a few times a year along with other similar events, so make sure you check out their website for upcoming events. www.embankmentbedford.co.uk
