Make ‘Choices’ Learning to

oct2017.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/10/2017 08:16 Page 11

I’ve heard a few times recently people saying things like ‘I couldn’t help it’ ‘they made me do it’ or ‘well it wasn’t my fault it was because …….’. Well let’s just set one thing straight. Unless someone literally has a gun to your head or is putting you under threat - you have a choice. But I also understand that it doesn’t always feel like we have much of choice. So let’s look at some strategies we can use to ensure that we are always aware that we are in control of our own actions and so can always exercise a choice about those, even if we can’t choose some of the things that are happening to us or around us. In fact lot of things can happen that we have no control or choice over - but even then we can exercise control of our response, we can make a choice. No matter what the situation, remind yourself “I have a choice”. Deepak Chopra

The steps below will help everyone be able to be more aware that we can always make a choice and that actually those choices will have an impact on our future.

Take time to react It happens to all of us, people upset or hurt us, stuff happens that makes us angry or unhappy and of course it is a very human response to react. However when we have lots of emotions our reaction may not be measured and sometimes we might actually make a situation worse by reacting when we are ‘emotional’. It might not be easy but just giving yourself a moment, even just a few seconds, can mean that we are better able to choose to react in a different way. Yes it might make us feel instantly better in the short term to throw something or yell at someone, or make a rude gesture when driving, but usually it doesn’t really help the situation, in fact sometimes it can make it a whole lot worse. So give yourself a minute, take a deep breath, and then choose how you will react.

Don’t be influenced by others I was talking with someone recently who was embroiled in a long and difficult legal battle. During the course of the conversation I asked why she had initially decided to take this route when it seemed to be there would have been other options. She suggested that a couple of friends had persuaded her it wasn’t right to let her adversary ‘get away with it’. I don’t think her friends meant to be unhelpful or give bad advice but of course they weren’t having to live through the consequences of the action. So be cautious about accepting advice from people who won’t have to accept the consequences of YOUR action. Think about the consequences The advantage of taking even just a minute before you react means you can consider the consequences

of what you feel like doing and sometimes that will be enough to help you to make a different choice. I’m fairly confident that there won’t be anyone reading this who doesn’t regret some consequence for a choice they made or an action they took. Of course some consequences may be unforeseen BUT if we stop for a moment many could be anticipated and often a different reaction can avoid some unfortunate consequences. I believe that we are solely responsible for our choices, and we have to accept the consequences of every deed, word, and thought throughout our lifetime. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

Choices are Cumulative Sometimes the impact of choices won’t be seen immediately but over time they can have a big impact. Think about a person who makes a choice to overeat, we’ve all done it and the consequences if it is an occasional choice may not be great, but if this is a repeated choice then this will impact your weight and potentially health. Similarly, if we always make the ‘safe’ choice and refuse to take a risk or never stray out of our comfort zone the long term impact may be that we restrict our personal growth in some way.

Feelings are NOT choices People, if I ask them about a choice they have made, will often refer to feelings. But feelings, while they are real and can have a great influence upon us, are not choices or actions. We have feelings but we can still choose how we act or react. Imagine someone who is feeling very sad, maybe they have suffered a disappointment or loss. The feelings might be awful but the feelings don’t make you stay in bed all day, or snap at everyone, they are choices we make, yes they may stem from the feelings but feelings never ‘make’ us do things. We can still choose how we act even when we are experiencing extreme emotions.

The Good News So the good news is that whatever life is throwing at us, and at times it might be pretty grim and we might feel battered by what is happening, we always have a choice, which means that we are not victims but actually we can be empowered to choose the life we want in all sorts of ways. Are you happy with your life? There may be some aspects that could be improved but the first step is to acknowledge that as humans we need not be passive but we can every day, in every situation, even those situations we wish we hadn’t found ourselves in, make some positive choices. If you’d like to find out more about how you can make choices to improve your life visit attunedsuccess.co.uk or contact us on 07921193479 or by email info@attunedsuccess.co.uk

Simple Mistakes that Could be Impacting your Weight

oct2017.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/10/2017 08:16 Page 15

We all sometimes skip the gym or reach for that extra bit of chocolate, but could daily habits be interfering with our health? We've rounded up five common mistakes people make that could have an impact on their weight.

1- Your morning coffee Although many of us use coffee to haul us out of our sluggish morning slumber, it may be feeding our sweet tooth and tempting us into snacks we know we should avoid. New research from Cornell University has found that caffeine can temper taste buds temporarily and make food and drink taste less sweet, leading us to crave sugary treats to satisfy our cravings*. So to get your morning off to a healthy start and still give you that little lift try swapping your morning coffee for Clearspring’s Matcha Shot [RRP £6.25, www.clearspring.co.uk]. 2 - Missing breakfast No matter how busy your morning, always make sure you make time for breakfast. Skipping this essential meal will wreak havoc with your blood sugar levels and leave you craving something sweet mid morning. Alix Woods, nutritionist at Quest Nutra Pharma (www.qnutraphrma.com), shares her favourite breakfast for balancing blood sugars, “Start the day with a great breakfast that includes whole grain cereals, nuts, seeds, and nutrient rich super fruits such as pomegranate, mango, and blueberries. For breakfast on the run choose a power shake combining fruits and cereal with added protein.” 3 - Being lazy under the covers You may have had a busy day at work but that’s no excuse to pass up on some fun in the bedroom! Sex is a great way to burn those few extra calories and can even help boost your immune system! Dr Marilyn Glenville, one of the UK’s leading nutritionists (www.marilynglenville.co.uk) explains, “There has been research to show that having regular sex (once or twice a week) boosts immune function. The researchers measured the level of IgA (immunoglobulin A), an antibody which can help protect us against colds and flu and found that those who had sex regularly each week had a 30% increase in IgA compared to those who either abstained or only had sex once a week.” 4 - Grabbing a smoothie It may be full of fruit, however some smoothies and fruit juices can contain up to 7g of sugar per 100ml, nearly a third of your recommended daily allowance. Instead of grabbing a shop bought smoothie try making yourself a juice with a real nutritional kick by combining blueberries, cucumber, avocado, water, flax seeds and, for an added boost of nutrients and protein try adding a supplement such as Nature’s Plus Vegan Power Meal [£36.75, www.naturesplus.co.uk] for a drink that’ll set you up for the day without any hidden sugary nasties.

5 - Doing that much beloved exercise class As much as you may love that post work HIIT class, having only one exercise staple may not be doing you as much good as you think. Shona Wilkinson, nutritionist at SuperfoodUK.com explains, “If you do the same exercise all the time your body can become used to it, and not work as hard. Adding variety also means you’re less likely to get bored and in turn go more often. Try to vary between aerobic, cardio, weights and exercises that can help with relaxation such as yoga and pilates.”

A Youthful Glow

Hydrating skin is the most important step to combat ageing. Murad’s new Hydro-Glow collection is a unique internal and external approach to skincare that goes beyond the skin’s surface to boost cellular hydration and help unlock the skin’s youthful potential. Hydro-Glow Aqua Peel (£40, four treatments), works on the skin’s outer layer to reveal radiant, healthy-looking skin and infuse a rush of hydration.

Midlife Madness Autumn Blues Okay, I get it! The climate, like life it seems, has seasons! Some countries have more extreme weather and others, like ourselves, have more equitable climates, as it can be tough to tell which month of the year or even season we are in simply from the weather! It can be fairly grey and damp at any time and is almost certainly going to rain in the summer on the day you’d planned a barbecue or picnic. Many of you may remember however that I am not a fan of either but not a great fan of rain either. Then while it might be chilly in winter there is no guarantee of snow and the fun that always seems to bring to folk - you know disrupted travel, closed schools and burst pipes. Obviously there are other clues to what season it is - if Christmas cards are on sale it could be anytime from September onwards and if it’s ‘back to school’ in the shops, the children have probably just broken up for the holidays, so it will be July - well clearly it’s good to plan ahead! When it’s freezing outside in February or even as soon as the January sales have finished, you‘ll find bikinis and summer dresses on sale. I get that we have to ACCEPT the weather, after all it’s all that rain that means we have a green and pleasant land, but as a self-confessed sun worshipper - I do hold fast to the belief that I was born in some sunny clime and swapped at birth somehow - I don’t feel it is necessary to ENJOY the autumn and winter. But folk seem to get all excited about it and I simply struggle to understand. There a few things that are nice, for a while at least. Personally I never enjoy getting winter clothes out again - for oh so many reasons, they hide my tan, they feel jaded - after all I wear them for upwards of 9 months a year and we’d be lucky to get 6 weeks out of our summer clothes, so they always feel more novel. Although I can appreciate there is the obvious advantage

of colder weather ‘styles’ namely that big baggy jumpers can be more comfortable and hide a multitude of summer alfresco eating and drinking excesses! But the other thing I don’t like is that it seems the whole of autumn can be regarded legitimately as the run up to Christmas - I even have friends who tell me with pride that all their Christmas shopping is done by the end of September!! I can’t imagine what they will be doing when the rest of us are frantically racing around buying presents, cards, and enough food to cope with a siege other than looking smug I suppose! Don’t get me wrong I love Christmas - I just don’t want to feel bored with it before we are even in November, let alone December - yes I am firmly in the ‘keep Christmas in December’ camp. I guess there must be people who enjoy fires and cold weather and wrapping their hands around drinks of hot chocolate, closing their curtains at four and not seeing neighbours, as it is too cold to make anything other than a dash to the car, please don’t try to engage me in conversation if it’s cold - I just can’t be doing with it. I can see certain appeals of the autumn - though you will never catch me calling it ‘fall’ - it’s certainly my time to enjoy apple and blackberry crumbles and other traditional hearty puddings, I’m not even adverse to a bit of jam making. There is the fun of Halloween and bonfire night but of course to enjoy them you probably have to wrap up in hat, scarf, gloves and thermal undies, so I just don’t get excited about that part of it at all. So as you can see I am struggling to embrace the season a case of the autumn blues - though almost certainly it’ll be grey! But I can just about cope with that as long as everyone else is not running around celebrating and enjoying the changing seasons.

Welcome to The Eatery It’s Not Just Coffee and Cake

Last month saw us attending the launch of a brand new independent coffee shop on the outskirts of Bedford, in the ever expanding village of Great Denham – The Eatery. And if the coffee, cakes, food and service were anything to go by on launch night, then you’re in for a real treat. Providing an array of freshly prepared food and drink including teas, (Tea pig teas to be precise), coffees and hot drinks along with freshly made cakes – think Oreo, Jaffa cake brownies, strawberry and white chocolate, giant Viennese whirls and you get the idea. Bit its not just about cakes and coffee, The Eatery serves an all day breakfast, using fresh locally sourced ingredients along with salads, Panini’s, homemade soups and quiches, ploughman’s platters, gourmet burgers – vegan and gluten free alternatives

- do I need to go on? I guarantee you’ll find something that will tempt everyone’s tastebuds. Not only does everything taste so delicious at The Eatery, the décor is just as delicious, think rustic and industrial and meet in the middle. Exposed brick walls, wooden floors, rustic wooden cladding, patchwork sofas and you’re halfway there, a real treat not only on your eyes but also on your tastebuds. So whether it’s coffee and cake, a lunchtime salad or afternoon pick me up, The Eatery is the place to go. Open seven days a week (please check their FB page for opening times), and evening opening hours to be added soon there’s no excuse not to pop in and discover what delights are waiting for you to enjoy. Food for Thought

I love visiting village pubs, as soon as you walk through the door you feel as if you’re stepping into a little bit of history, and the latest offering from Heroic pubs is no exception. Situated in the village of Bow Brickhill on the outskirts of Milton Keynes is The Wheatsheaf Pub & Grill.

menu revolves around fresh, seasonal and sustainable produce, and this is no exception at The Wheatsheaf, with the focus being on the best naturally reared Prime Steaks and fresh daily caught British Fish, meaning a different fish dish is created every day.

The décor is rustic with a modern twist, a wooden floor compliments the dark painted walls and white tiles make it look airy and fresh. Industrial lighting hangs from the ceiling and eye catching wooden plant holders hang on the walls – if the food is as good as the décor we’re in for a treat.

Olives and warm bread went well with our apperitiefs of Gin and Tonic, whilst we made our food choices from a delicious looking menu.

As we have come to expect when eating out, the food

You can’t have a daily fish dish and not try it so I opted for the potted salmon and prawns with a beetroot chutney, the chunky pieces of fresh salmon paired with the beetroot chutney perfectly, and Ham Hock Terrine, with

radish, green apple and bread was full of deep flavours – We loved how these were served They looked like mini picnics on a chequered picnic blanket. Mains were both meaty with steak for myself and a rack of BBQ pork ribs with fennel and orange slaw for hubbie, we did add some King prawn skewers to the steak. I am so fussy with steak and I am sure I insult the chef every time I utter the words “medium to well done” but unlike many restaurants/pubs this was cooked exactly as I requested and was delicious, the prawns were chunky and full of flavour and as for the ribs, the meat just fell off the bone it was so tender . The wine list has a good choice with prices starting from just £4.80 for a glass of Chenin Blanc, along with staff that are attentive and friendly, The Wheatsheaf is ticking all the right boxes. Dessert was such a temptation, with an Eton Mess and Sticky Toffee pudding both teasing our tastebuds. The Eton Mess was a delightfully creamy treat, with vanilla ice cream and fresh berries and the sticky toffee was topped with a creamy, crunchy honeycomb ice cream, that melted into the warm pudding and tasted utterly divine. After dinner we retired into the bar area, if you’re partial to a taste of the juniper berry, then you need to check out the extensive range of gins on offer. Whether drunk on its own or in a cocktail you won’t be disappointed. Our dining experience was faultless, proving that The Wheatsheaf, is another jewel in the Heroic pubs crown, with location, food, service and drinks all living up to the high standards we’ve come to expect. Mediterranean Chicken Chipolata Gnocchi On cold, wet evenings, there’s nothing better than a warming bowl of creamy gnocchi – and a little goes a long way.

Ingredients

1 pack MOR Mediterranean Chicken, Sundried Tomato & Basil Chipolatas 200g frozen spinach, or 125g of fresh spinach 1 x 500g packet chilled gnocchi 1 x 400g can chopped tomatoes 125g mascarpone or cream cheese 2-3 tbsp grated parmesan cheese Salt and black pepper Basil leaves

Method Grill the chipolatas as per pack instructions until they’re a nice, even colour. Once cooked pop them into an oven proof serving dish. Place the frozen spinach (or fresh if you’d prefer) together with the tinned tomatoes into a pan and cook for 5 to 6 minutes. Next add the mascarpone and heat until bubbling. Stir in a handful of the fresh basil leaves and season with salt and pepper. Cook the gnocchi for a speedy 4 minutes. Drain the water away and stir the gnocchi into the creamy sauce. Finally pour the whole mixture over the sausages and sprinkle over the parmesan. Serve immediately.

Spiced Sausage Shakshuka

Our version of the hugely popular Middle Eastern egg dish uses Moroccan-spiced pork sausages to make a perfectly flavoursome brunch, ideal for chilly days. Add an extra garlic clove and a few chilli flakes if you like things spicier.

Ingredients

1 pack MOR Moroccan Spiced Pork, Cauliflower & Chickpea Sausages 6 eggs 2 tomatoes, each cut into 6 wedges 1 x 400g tinned tomatoes 1 green pepper, thinly sliced 1 red pepper, thinly sliced 1 large onion, thinly sliced 3-4 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp ground cumin Salt and pepper 1 tbsp olive oil

To serve 2 tbsp chopped parsley or coriander

Method

Begin by grilling the sausages as per pack instructions, until deliciously golden brown. While the sausages are cooking, take a large sauté pan, drizzle with oil and fry the peppers and onion for 6 to 7 minutes (until they’ve softened nicely). Add the crushed garlic and spices and cook for a further 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in the tomatoes and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes until bubbling. Season with salt and pepper. Take the cooked sausages and place them in the sauce, leaving space between them. Now crack an egg between each sausage. Scatter over the tomato wedges. Cook for a further 10 to 15 minutes, making sure to baste the eggs with some of the tomato juice. If you’d rather, just cover the pan with a lid and finish cooking the dish in a preheated oven at 180°C for 10 to 15 minutes. To finish, sprinkle over the herbs – then tuck in.

Pumpkin Cheesecake Lasagne

Autumn means different foods come into season, none more so than pumpkins – Who knew they could taste so delicious Method

Ingredients 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup sugar 1 1/2 cups heavy cream 2 cups milk 3 small packages vanilla pudding mix 1 cup pumpkin purée 1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice 10 – 12 digestive biscuits 1/4 cup caramel Pecans, for garnish

With an electric whisk beat the cream cheese and ¼ cup sugar until light and fluffy, (approx 2 minutes). Slowly add in 1 1/2 cups heavy cream and beat until stiff peaks form. In another bowl, beat the milk, pudding mix, pumpkin, and pumpkin pie spice until well-mixed and thick. (Start with 1 1/2 cups milk and beat until it's the consistency of a pudding—if it's too thick, continue to add the rest of the milk.) Spread a thin layer of cream cheese mixture in a 9" x 13" baking dish. Top with a layer of digestive biscuits. Add half the pudding mixture and top with a layer of half the cream cheese mixture. Drizzle with caramel and repeat, ending with the cream cheese layer (hold the caramel until ready to serve). Cover loosely with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours and up to overnight. Drizzle with caramel and garnish with pecans before serving. www.delish.com

need to utilise them well with Champions League commitments.

It is very rarely quiet in the football world – there is so much going on both on and off the field and the opening few months of the season has seen 10 managers lose their jobs, which I personally find incredible.

Crystal Palace recently appointed Roy Hodgson as their new manager and I am confident with his experience he can steer the Eagles away from danger. In the Championship, Sunderland have found life really hard despite changing their boss and appointing someone with experience in that league, Simon Grayson, at the helm.

One of my friends in the game, Harry Redknapp was sacked at Birmingham City after just a handful of games in the Sky Bet Championship while Justin Edinburgh lost his job at Northampton Town in League One. Both managers were allowed to sign a combination of 28 players ahead of the new campaign – if you are going to let bosses make those additions you need to give them time to implement their own style on that particular club. At Peterborough United we have made a good start to the season and at the time of writing this column are in third place with 20 points. We have always been known as the entertainers, and this season is no different – long may that continue – we all love seeing goals!

Sometimes in football, momentum can work both ways. When you are winning games, it breeds confidence and when you lose games, it is hard to get out of that rut and Sunderland are finding that both at the Stadium of Light and away from home.

In the Premier League, it looks like Manchester United and Manchester City will be fighting it out for the title. They have both assembled terrific squads but they will

Barry Fry

However, I am sure given time, Grayson will start turning it around. They are a huge club but they will find that the Championship is a very unforgiving league.

The retractable hard top (RHT) has been completely redesigned and can now be opened or closed in just 14 seconds on the move at lower speeds, making the car even more practical. Careful modelling of the RHT housing now allows the luggage compartment to hold two cabin trolleys with the roof down and three with the roof up. Ideal for any occasion, the Ferrari Portofino represents the perfect combination of design, performance and technology.

The new car, which takes its name, Portofino, from one of the most charming villages on the Italian Riviera, an eponym for stylish elegance, is the most versatile model in the range. A Ferrari designed to be driven every day that also effortlessly converts from an authentic ‘berlinetta’ coupĂŠ to a drop-top capable of delivering a unique Ferrari soundtrack and superb driving pleasure even in day-to-day situations.

The Ferrari Portofino is significantly lighter with the adoption of new components featuring innovative designs made possible by the use of cutting-edge production techniques. This, combined with a 40 cv higher power output than the California T, has resulted in a significant hike in performance and a corresponding drop in emissions. Vehicle dynamics benefit from the introduction, for the first time on this model, of electric power steering, the 3rd generation electronic differential (E-Diff3) and the latest evolution of the electronic suspension control system (SCM-E) integrated with Premium 9.1 ESP.

Capable of unleashing a massive 600 cv and sprinting from 0 to 200 km/h in just 10.8 seconds, the Ferrari Portofino is the most powerful convertible to combine the advantages of a retractable hard top, a roomy boot and generous cockpit space complete with two rear seats suitable for short trips.

Bringing Authentic Luxury to Europe at

The Anantara Vilamoura Algarve Resort

Stunning beaches, vibrant cities, historic towns, lush islands and culinary delights, a place where you can do as much or as little as you wish. Somewhere like this has to be at least 8-10 hours on the plane right? No, we’re talking Portugal, one of the must go to countries whether you’re a first time visitor or you’ve been before, it’s somewhere that you want to go back to time and time again. We were off for a short break, staying at the recently opened five star luxury Anantara Vilamoura Algarve Resort – Anantara is brand famous in Asia and the Middle East, and this is the first resort it has opened in Europe. The luxury influence is evident the minute you pull up outside, with a Ferrari and Lamborghini taking pride of place outside the sleek glass entrance. Doormen greet you with a big smile and help you carry your bags into the large open plan lobby. Marble is a heavy influence here, as is local crafts and traditions. Check in was reminiscent of our stay in Thailand, we were taken into a bright airy lounge, where we relaxed on sofas with a cold towel to cool down with, glass of freshly squeezed orange juice (Portugal is known for refreshingly sweet oranges), nuts and a traditional Portuguese hot drink. Our room a Deluxe Pool View Room, looked out over the lush green gardens and Cascade adult pool. With a soft colour palette of creams, whites and greys, coming together to create a luxurious, elegant space to relax. The semi open-plan bathroom, featured Elemis products, a rain shower and large bath, and the balcony was the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine from the mini bar or a coffee from the Nespresso machine. In total there are 280 bedrooms, 17 are suites, with the one of a kind rooftop Presidential Suite complete with its own whirlpool and personal butler!

oct2017.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/10/2017 20:54 Page 61

The adult only Cascade Pool is surrounded by very comfortable day beds and champagne cabanas, the emphasis here is adult indulgence with Veuve Clicquot Champagne being evident everywhere you look, the cushions, the towels, and ice buckets all make you feel as if you are in an exclusive club. There are Sunshine Butlers that ensure you don’t have to lift a finger unless you want to, bringing you drinks and snacks and if you do decide to venture off your bed, there’s always the small cascade bar that serves drinks and bar food for you to visit. There’s a real emphasis on gastronomy at Anantara Vilamoura, Algarve and we can see why. First there’s breakfast served on the terrace, again its all about the personal touches with a freshly squeezed daily juice given on arrival and then the fresh artisan breads and meats, traditional Portuguese dishes, a pancake station, hot dishes, an egg station, and the fresh fruit platters, that have some of the sweetest tasting melon and pineapple I’ve ever tasted, all enjoyed whilst sitting in the morning sun or shade looking out over the gardens – this is how breakfast every morning should be. And then there’s Ria Seafood restaurant, overlooking the Palms Pool. You can sit outside or inside, with a nautical haven of white washed furniture, white walls and turquoise blues with fresh lobsters swimming around in large tanks – and fish caught daily. I have to say although I’m a fish lover I never venture out of my comfort zone and will normally stick with fish I know such as prawns, salmon, etc. So when we were told the chef was going to bring us an assortment of dishes to try I was just a little apprehensive – But I needn’t have been, the octopus salad was a dream and the freshly caught fish served with Portuguese potatoes and a Montenar salad (this is only served in the Algarve) was so tasty and delightful I couldn’t get enough of it. The restaurant offers guests a traditional menu, including the likes of monkfish rice and cataplanas (seafood stews cooked in copper pots which are native to the region). Ria restaurant is open lunchtimes and evenings, but if you’re looking for something a little more formal for dinner (or if you’re celebrating a special occasion whilst you’re away) then a visit to EMO restaurant is a must. A wine centric restaurant where Chef Bruno Viegas and wine guru António Lopes tempt your palette with gourmet food and fine wines. Although there are tables inside the restaurant, the place to sit is on the outside balcony, with stunning views, and a calm and peaceful ambience that’s helped along with candles and soft lighting – if you time your dinner just right you may even get to see sunset. Again we left our food in the hands of the chef, and our dining experience began with the freshest tastiest artisan rosemary foccacia and sundried tomato bread, (I would have been quite happy to eat this all evening) and then with the advice of Antonio we began with a Port and Fevertree tonic aperitif, before the scrambled egg foam with jubilee chips tempted our taste buds, the foam just literally melted in the mouth and the jubilee chips were tiny stick like crisps – divine. A cockle ravioli with red curry pearls followed, paired perfectly with a white wine that was served at room temperature – strange you might think, but it worked! Next came the Braised Turbot with puree green peas, truffle oil and shitake mushrooms, this was full of delicate flavours and as with all fish here was so fresh – dessert was different chocolate flavours made all the more elegant with gold

leaf and edible flowers, it tasted divine. A little tip before dining in the evening head down to the Anantara Bar and Lounge for around 8pm grab a cocktail or aperitif, some Portuguese tapas and watch the live Fado performance (Traditional live Portuguese singing) – it really is worth it. Anantara Vilamoura, has tried to keep local influences and traditions throughout as much as they can (something they do in all their hotels) their motto being “Life is a journey” each hotel trys to let you experience the diversity of each destination; be it cultural, gastronomic, adventure lead, cosmopolitan pursuits or simple respite. In between enjoying all the culinary delights on offer, be sure to find time to visit the spa, an oasis of pure indulgence and sensual tranquillity, evident from the minute you arrive. A welcome drink of fresh lemon water (you can have herbal tea), helps you relax before your therapist takes you for your treatment – The Anantara signature massage, began with the ritual of a foot soak and a coffee scrub that smelt so amazing. Then the body massage followed, exotic essential oils were skilfully massaged into my body helping me to get into true holiday mode this stimulated my circulation and restored my flow of energy, once finished I felt as if I was walking in a bubble of calm. Just because your treatment’s finished doesn’t mean your spa experience is, cinnamon tea with honey and fresh fruit is brought to you whilst you continue to indulge in the whole experience and relax on the heated tiled beds overlooking the indoor vitality pool. Not forgetting the fitness lovers amongst us, there’s a state of the art gym open 24 hours, so no excuse whatsoever! In between eating, spaing, sunbathing, sipping champagne and cocktails, don’t forget to arrange a Tuk Tuk Tour (the hotel has their own Tuk Tuk’s in the bright orange/yellow Veuve Clicquot colours) – You can tour the fishing villages, old town, castle ruins, shops or beaches – and you can hop off if you decide to stay and call the hotel to send the Tuk Tuk back to you later – Nothing beats driving down the road in this open air mode of transport. And then of course there’s the golf, something else Portugal is well known for – Just moments away on the hotel's doorstep lies the expansive golf course, for guests to enjoy. It’s clear to see that Anantaras’ rise into Europe is a big hit, a hotel that oozes luxury and elegance at every turn, with staff that are warm and friendly and genuinely seem to love what they do. A foodies paradise, golf lovers haven, couples romantic retreat and family fun getaway, they have thought of everything, I can’t wait to go back, although I may have to save for a few more years if I want to experience the Rooftop Presidential Suite! With Kenneth Branagh's Murder on the Orient Express set to hit the UK cinema screens on 3rd November, Jumeirah Hotels and Resorts have unveiled a 'Murder On The Orient Express' package, inviting guests to step back in time and recreate this worldfamous murder mystery. Begin the journey at Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel in Belgravia, an area that was once the start of the Orient Express line, where crimefiction lovers will be given a Turkish 'evil eye' charm to ward off evil and a copy of the Murder on the Orient Express book from the nearby Belgravia Books. During their stay, guests will also be provided with ingredients to mix their own Grasshopper cocktail, featuring Crème de Menthe, one of Poirot's tipples of choice. Continue following in the footsteps of the Orient Express at Pera Palace Hotel Jumeirah in Istanbul, where guests will be greeted with an Orient Express themed cocktail. The iconic hotel was originally built to greet guests of the Orient Express; and Agatha Christie is rumored to have written Murder on the Orient Express there in Room 411, aptly renamed the Agatha Christie room. With this package, Christie fans have the option to stay in this room, which features a replica of her typewriter and a collection of her novels. A Renowned Retreat

N

estled in Buckinghamshire’s Chiltern Hills is the historic mansion house estate know as De Vere Latimer Estate, having recently undergone an impressive £7m refurbishment, that has seen many of the property’s original features kept along with modern day twists, that have come together to create a stunning retreat to escape to. The De Vere Latimer is steeped in history, built on the site of an original Elizabethan manor house which was destroyed by fire in the early 1830s, it was rebuilt in 1838. Also known as 'The Spy House' because of its top-secret project run by the British Secret Service during WW2. Housing German prisoners who were then bugged to obtain vital intelligence, James Bond the ultimate British Spy certainly wouldn’t feel out of place here, especially as Post-war, the house is rumoured to have been an MI6 training college and secret tunnels remain below the building to this day. Pulling up to the impressive building, the history of the house ids evident, there’s a restored Morris Minor parked outside, the entrance hall has old fashioned typewriters and telephones on display along with wartime photographs dotted around the walls. There’s a row of Hunter Boots in different sizes for you to use for muddy walks, along with umbrellas and bicycles (it’s the finishing touches that always count and De Vere Latimer have definitely thought of all of those). The lobby is a lovely space, with high ceilings and stained glass leaded windows, sofas and a drinks cabinet that is housed in an old travel case all add to the grandeur of the house and the feature carved stone fireplace, where two real life looking straw dogs reside, really does make you look twice. Every corner you turn there’s another piece of history like the original wooden staircase that leads to the 31 deluxe rooms and suites. Speaking of rooms our was a superb space, a deluxe room, located in the Mansion House with magnificent views stretching across the garden and the river Chess. Decorated in neutral tones, with herringbone check curtains and bed throw, and dotted with traditional and modern accessories – including of course a flat screen TV and digital radio. The pull of the views were too much for us, so

once unpacked we sat outside, sipping a glass of wine and just took in the peace and tranquility of the vast views and nature, wondering if there was anyone spying on us from behind one of the many trees! Dinner is served in the aptly named 1838 restaurant. A bright and airy space inspired by nature, that has you feeling like your dining al fresco, a glass ceiling, indoor trees and a bandstand that takes centre stage (you can eat in here). The kitchen is open plan so you can watch the chefs at work, knowing you cant get food any fresher than this. We enjoyed appetizers of mixed olives and Moroccan hummus, before deciding on warm duck leg salad with king prawn and crab mayo salad, both dishes were fresh and full of flavour. Steak and seabream with scallops followed, the steak was cooked to perfection, the seabream was fresh and tasty and the scallops were tender to the palette. The dessert menu looked full of sweet delights, but I was just too full to indulge, although hubbie didn’t have that trouble and enjoyed the delights of the triple chocolate fudge brownie accompanied by poached cherries and vanilla ice cream before heading to the Huntley Bar, for a nightcap before retiring for a blissful nights sleep. Decisions, decisions, morning walk or breakfast or breakfast or morning walk and so it went until the smell of food proved too much and lured us to eat first. Breakfast is buffet style with a selection of fresh pastries and breads, fresh fruit, yoghurts and cereals as well as meat and vegetable hot breakfast choices, definitely enough to set you up for the day. As we wandered round the gardens, it easy to see why this elegant house is a popular retreat to escape to with it’s stunning views, perfectly kept gardens, grand house and historic past – it’s somewhere you need to pay a visit to, who knows what you’ll find lurking behind the walls. Ahoy there! All aboard the AmaPrima!

oct2017.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/10/2017 08:25 Page 69

Rebecca Underwood takes us on an enchanting river cruise with AmaWaterways For weary landlubbers yearning to escape the relentless pressures of life in the fast lane, AmaWaterways offers the ultimate retreat. Featured in the latest issue of the Berlitz Guide to River Cruising, the company achieved the highest rating for its European fleet and took the top spot in ten categories with AmaPrima at number one. The 'Enchanting Rhine' cruise onboard the AmaPrima, covers 493 glorious miles, calling in at Strasbourg, Mannheim, Rudesheim, Koblenz, Cologne and Amsterdam. AmaPrima, constructed in the Netherlands and launched in 2013, is a sleek lined modern vessel, which provides the highest levels of comfort and service and the 51 attendant crew members ensure that each passenger's every wish is fulfilled. The elegant and tastefully decorated ship measures 443' in length and 38' in width and facilities, to maintain health and wellbeing, include a fitness centre, massage parlour, and a hair and beauty salon. Accommodations range in size up to a maximum of 300 sq ft and the 3 suites and the majority of the 81 luxuriously furnished staterooms feature twin balconies, which is the perfect spot for an afternoon tipple, whilst gazing upon the scenic views of life on the river bank. AmaWaterways is an inductee of the prestigious La Chaine des Rotisseurs; an exclusive international culinary society; founded in Paris in 1950, and offers dining experiences like no other. Highlights include the elaborate Captain's Gala dinner, served with much aplomb in the Main Restaurant. The succulent grilled Atlantic sole fillet, salmon with crab meat stuffing and tiger shrimp with Cognac sauce was superb. We selected the Moreau & Fils Chablis and enhanced by the vanilla, lemon and linden aromas, it was a simply first class dish. After dinner, ladies in their flowing gowns and gentlemen in their resplendent attire made their way to the Main Lounge and the gentle strains of the music enticed couples to show off their nifty footwork to the delight of the admiring audience. After dining we made our way to the lounge for a cocktail or two and were entertained with an evening of 'French Chansons' with vocalist Muriel, accompanied by Armand playing his accordion with gusto. Other entertainment options included a toe tapping tribute to ABBA and an excellent classical concert performed by talented musicians La Strada. During the day, whilst the ship is sailing, the gorgeous sun deck is the place to be. Comfortable sun loungers with foot rests and wide, sturdy parasols afford the ideal spot for reading, followed by an afternoon snooze, and for those

keen to keep in trim there is a walking track. Water babes will be drawn to the outdoor heated pool with a 'swim up' bar, or for those of us more inclined to recline there is a large cushioned seating area at the bow, which provides the perfect place to admire the approaching scenery. For 'grown ups' entranced with the sight of 'fairytale' castles and reminded of those magical stories of long ago, be prepared for an extravaganza. AmaPrima sails along the 65 kilometres of the Rhine Gorge, which was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002, and between Koblenz and Bingen we passed by the verdant tapestry of vineyards, quaint historic towns, and the most majestic and beautiful castles imaginable. 28 castles came into view, including the Koblenz Electoral Palace, built in the 18th century. And as we enjoyed our serving of afternoon tea in the comfort of the lounge we sailed on and on past the colourful kaleidoscope of the banks of the Rhine, bound for Amsterdam. We sipped on a glass of chilled champagne and raised a toast to the words of American poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; 'Beneath me flows the Rhine, and, like the stream of time, it flows amid the ruins of the past'.
