4 Autumn is well and truly here; the nights are drawing in and the leaves are changing colour. It gives us an excuse to go shopping to update our wardrobe as well as our home! The foods we eat change, we go from light salads and BBQ’s to comfort food such as casseroles and one pot delights, but for the many of us that embrace autumn and the change in seasons there is just as many that dread it as SAD’s (Seasonal Affective Disorder) hits them during the dark winter months, we’ve spoke to our experts (page 18) on ways to help boost our mood and help us cope during this time

October is officially Breast Cancer Awareness month, and with many brands showing their support by giving a percentage of sales from limited edition products to Breast Cancer Charities, it’s easy to do your bit and help towards this by just purchasing one of them! Page 22 brings you some of our favourites. The latest cruise to hit the waters is U by Uniworld, the first river cruise dedicated to a new generation of adult travelers, with a sexy, stylish look and feel that offers immersive experiences along the world’s most popular rivers. Itineraries focus on longer stays in destination, allowing guests to connect with local people, experiences and each city’s vibrant nightlife, page 64 tells you more.

Afternoon tea, one of our favourite indulgences is now on offer at the beautiful country house hotel, Woodland Manor in Bedfordshire. Served in their conservatory the tea is a mixture of savoury and sweet delights, turn to page 42 To see what we thought.

Dare I say it, next month will be the start of our countdown to Christmas, so be sure to look out for your bumper issue, until then…. Happy Autumn - Have Fun!

Happy Days Our favourite Life Coach, Carole Ann Rice knows how important it is to take small steps to appreciate happiness . So, she’s revealing the five things we can all do daily to feel that little bit happier: DO SOMETHING KIND

The lovely karmic kick-back starter pack includes but is not limited to buying and sending flowers unexpectedly to a co - worker or loved one, sending a thank you card to someone who has never stopped supporting you, and passing on a compliment to someone. By knowing that you brightened up someone’s day, it’ll help brighten your own, too. GET YOUR BLOOD PUMPING

As much as we may love to share those studies that suggest we can be allergic to exercise, there are more ways to get moving than you might suspect that can be major mood boosters. Dancing, running, swimming, even gentle strolls have a way of boosting the spirit. Try to do so without your phone or going on Airplane mode; go offline to give yourself a chance to not think, just be.

RELISH THE SMALL THINGS

It could be a piping hot cup of coffee before work, a bath enhanced with a lavender bath bomb, the tweeting of the birds, or a good book to curl up and read. Learning to appreciate the little things in life will make it easier to see the beauty in the macro. KEEP A BLESSINGS BOOK

Each day, whether after waking up or before going to bed, jot down all the things in life you’re grateful for. It could be your friends, having a roof over your head, or even your new Amazon Prime subscription. Whatever it is, itemising it will remind you daily that there are reasons to smile.. JUST KEEP SMILING

Simple. Smiling is contagious, and the more you smile at others the more they can’t help but smile back. Even if you’re on the train at 8::30am commuting to work – that smile you crack to a passer-by might just be the thing they needed to see.. www.realcoachingco.com

A Star is Born -

Hattie & Co

ast month saw the opening of a beautiful new baby and toddler boutique in the Edwardian Arcade in Bedford, Hattie & Co.

L

The brain child of w e l l - k n o w n businesswoman Nicola Harris, awardwinning owner of George James Bridal in Bromham Road, Bedford. Hattie & Co is a small but perfectly formed boutique named after Nicola’s own daughter Hattie. Stocking five fabulous designers ranging from daywear to gorgeous special occasion outfits.

A VIP opening saw guests enjoy a glass of bubbles and indulge in some delicious cake whilst celebrities Verity Rushworth (Emmerdale ) and Emma Williams (leading lady in the West End Show Officer and a Gentleman), cut the ribbon and welcomed customers into the boutique. Each piece in the boutiques collection has been carefully chosen by Nicola and includes the brands;

Rachel Riley, a British luxury baby and children’s wear label. The designs are known for fine tailoring, exclusive vintage inspired prints and attention to detail such as intricate hand smocking. The brand became a global household name in 2014 when Prince George wore a RR outfit during his first official engagement. Other high profile celebs fans include Suri Cruise and Harper Beckham.

Kite, a bold, bright and beautiful brand with a planetfriendly ethos. Brought to life just yards from the sea in Dorset, every garment is manufactured to the highest quality with the lowest environmental impact. Emile et Rose, the Little London 2017 award-winner for best children’s brand is recognised for its traditional pastel pinks and blues. The fabrics are mainly cotton or cotton rich and comfortable, stylish yet completely practical for

babies as they grow and explore their surroundings.

Patachou is produced in Portugal. It has a chic feel and is of the finest quality. It is the perfect collection for special occasions. The company also takes its social responsibility very seriously too, for every three pieces sold, another is one is donated to a child in need.

Mini-La-Mode, based in Southampton, these baby clothes are made from the highest grade of hand-picked Peruvian pima cotton which is 100% certified for its premium quality and is therefore perfect for precious new born skin. It is allows skin to breathe naturally which is essential for regulating a baby’s body temperature and all the items are lovingly handmade by traditional artisans.

Nicola told us “I feel passionate about choosing products for children that are high-quality with a planet-friendly ethos. We aim to provide exceptional customer service with gorgeous garments to suit all price points,” “There is a gift-wrapping service for those wishing to purchase items for baby showers and other special occasions. We also provide an on-line service for those who do prefer to browse from the comfort of their own homes.” “I am a huge supporter of shopping with local indies and think the Bedford community is thriving with wonderful businesses and I feel there is a gap for a quality baby wear boutique. The bond with a child is so personal that I feel that it is a lovely thing to be able to buy in-store rather than on-line.”

We have to agree with Nicola, the products on sale in Hattie & Co are beautiful individual pieces that tempt you to purchase at least one item every time you walk through the door, but don’t take our word for it, pop along to Hattie & Co and take a look for yourself, you won’t be disappointed. Hattie & Co is open Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 4pm. Hattie & Co 20, The Arcade, High Street Bedford, Bedfordshire

Combat Seasonal Affective Disorder with these 7 mood boosting tips

oct2018.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 30/09/2018 21:44 Page 17

Autumn is well and truly here and the long winter nights will soon be here! “SAD is a seasonal depression, in which sufferers feel depressed during the dark winter months, and experience relief during spring and summer. The symptoms can include feeling depressed, oversleeping, craving carbohydrates and sweet foods, and also lethargy. It is interesting that some animals hibernate during the winter and even those who don’t their activity can reduce. So it is thought that maybe SAD is a normal response to the winter months as it was helpful to our ancestors and that nowadays some people may be especially sensitive to the changes in season,” explains the UK’s leading Nutritionist and author of The Natural Health Bible for Women, Dr. Marilyn Glenville (www.marilynglenville.com). We’ve asked our experts to help, with their top mood boosting tips…. Switch up your snacks for bananas and dried dates

“Tryptophan is an important amino acid for mood and depression. Your body makes serotonin (the ‘feel good’ brain chemical) from tryptophan. Tryptophan occurs naturally in foods such as dairy products, fish, bananas, dried dates, soya, almonds and peanuts. Tryptophan is converted into serotonin unlike conventional antidepressant which don’t ‘supply’ serotonin but act as SSRIs, serotonin reuptake inhibitors which keep the level of serotonin high in the brain,” explains Marilyn. Don't rely on the sun for Vitamin D because you could be waiting a while

“You may be more affected by SAD because of a lack of vitamin D, as it is thought of as the ‘sunshine vitamin’. Vitamin D receptors are present in your central nervous system and vitamin D can affect neurotransmitters like serotonin, which are linked to depression.”

If you can, get a liquid vitamin D3 and drop it under your tongue. It will go into the blood vessels under your tongue so it is absorbed quickly, rather than having to be digested if you take a capsule. Try NHP’s Vitamin D3 Support, (£12.97, www.naturalhealthpractice.com) free of preservatives, sweeteners and is suitable for pregnant women, children and adults. Laugh all year long

Having a laugh is one of the best remedies for stress and low mood – it triggers healthy changes in our body. “Many studies show that laughter boosts our energy, decreases stress hormones, improves immunity and diminishes pain. But what’s very important for anyone, who is stressed or feeling down, is that laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the natural feel-good chemicals that make us happier and relaxed,” explains Marilyn. Cheer up your mind through your gut

“We’re learning more about the importance of the ‘friendly’ bacteria and other microbes that live in our gut. Our gut is often referred to as the body’s second brain as it is teaming with billions of bacteria that help influence immunity,

mood, digestion and even brainpower,” explains Nutritionist and Fitness Instructor Cassandra Barns.

The brand-new Sense* for Gut Health is here to help not only your gut, but also your mood! This natural food supplement provides expertly targeted nutrients, supporting gut membranes, digestive enzymes and healthy stomach acids by replacing the harmful bacteria with nutrients that help to heal and maintain a healthy gut. The product is available in a capsule form for convenience (£14.99, www.boots.com), or in a powder form (£21.99, www.boots.com), which can be added to your favourite smoothies, juices or stirred into food. Bring the light to you

“If you feel especially down on dark mornings, consider using a special light lamp alarm clock. The lamp gradually turns itself on (and gets brighter and brighter) to mimic natural dawn sunrise, to wake you up slowly before your alarm goes off. Research has shown people feel more positive and find it easier to get out of bed in the darker months after using this kind of device,” says Nutritionist, Cassandra Barns. Everyone is going hemp crazy and rightly so

Hemp, the sought after natural ingredient, continues to hit headlines thanks to its highly nutritious health benefits. Hemp contains phytocannabinoids, “Phytocannabinoids are natural substances found in cannabis sativa plants. When we absorb them, they interact with our nervous system, brain and immune system. They do this by mimicking – or helping to increase – the activity of natural chemicals produced in our own body known as endocannabinoids. Endocannabinoids have effects on many systems and processes in our body, including digestion and appetite, mood, stress response, sensations of pleasure and pain, our immune system and reproduction. So, phytocannabinoids from cannabis sativa are thought to have beneficial effects in these areas.” – just need to add in who said this To help harmonise your mind and body, try Natures Plus HempCeutix Complete capsules (£39.95, www.naturesplus.co.uk). Don’t let multiple things get you down

Diabetes is much more than a condition that affects blood sugar. It can have an impact on nearly every body system, including a person’s mood.Winter is bad enough - don’t let multiple things get you down on top of the chilly conditions.

For extra support that can be taken alongside your medication, Dr Wendy Denning recommends CuraLin (£59.00, www.curalife.co). “CuraLin is a nutritional supplement made from a mixture of eleven natural ingredients, which are derived from Ayurvedic medicine, that work with the body to help balance blood sugar levels of those suffering from Type 2 Diabetes. It can also help reduce cravings for sugar and processed carbohydrates, restricts absorption of sugar and other carbohydrates, boosts insulin sensitivity and production and supports daily energy levels.”

Midlife Madness Without wishing to cause alarm I’m afraid I must confess to the fact that I hear voices!

In fact I have done for a long time, mostly my own, though I do have a whole variety of different ‘selves’ that talk to me. There’s my friendly ‘don’t be hard on yourself’ self, my ‘buck up you can do better’, self and some sort of cross between a disappointed parent and a strict school teacher which or should it be ‘who’ - sort of tuts and never fails to make me feel bad! Now usually this voice (ok these voices) are in response to me talking, (yes to myself – it’s not a problem, in fact doesn’t everyone?) which to be honest I do a lot, mostly – but not always when alone. If I felt the need to justify it, which I don’t, then my justification is that I think best out loud! If I am brutally honest I often get more sense out of myself than I do out of others and it cuts out a whole load of timeconsuming explanation. I have been happy with my voices up until now but there has been a rather sinister change.

The thing about my own voices is precisely that they are my own voices – I like to think that I have some degree of control over them – when that stops I guess it is the people with the white coats who will come after me. It is he technological voices however that seem hell bent on upsetting are quiet clearly beyond my control.

I think I have talked about the sat nav before, must say straight off I would be ‘lost’ without her. Okay not so funny, and obviously I talk back to her ( we all do don’t we?) with ‘which lane?’ or ‘but there’s a no entry sign’ etc , though I don’t know about you but having heard horror stories of people ending up in fields I confess I’m

on the side of the sat nav! Honestly, it’s unfair to blame a sat nav for such rank stupidity, I generally think they are getting much better and even send me to helpful alternative routes when the traffic looks particularly busy, though I must confess not all the alternative routes are ones I would have chosen if I’d known about the single track muddy road which I shared with sheep! But I had a bit of a scare the other day when I was merrily driving along and mid journey my phone sat nav seemed to attach itself to my radio – I know this can be done but I like to keep her volume low and the music loud! Well thanks to blue tooth, I presume and possibly my dear husband who had no doubt twiddled with settings, there I was singing along merrily (not actually talking to myself on this occasion) when she suddenly booms out ‘at the roundabout take the second exit’ – it didn’t even fit in with the song and she magically cut out the music. Well I don’t like that setting at all. I might even have mentioned my phone before who clearly gets lonely, as unbidden, Siri will ask me ‘What can I help you with’ – I’m guessing this happens to more than just me!

The response varies from a ‘shut up I wasn’t talking to you’ – oh dear I can almost imagine I hurt his feelings (he’s male my Siri) or ‘how did you know I was thinking of booking a hotel in Essex?’ But, I still find it a bit alarming that technology does seem to have a life of its own. Alexa, however! Well it’s a whole new level of worry, not only does she talk when asked or randomly when not asked, but she has real power, she can turn things off and on – set music playing or a dozen other things designed to make me doubt my sanity! Of course, there is a plus side I just need to train her to cook dinner and empty the bins? Anybody managed that yet?

Learning to

Make it Magnificent

oct2018.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 30/09/2018 21:44 Page 23

There is in us all an awareness that we only get one shot at life and that we never really know when our time here will be done. Now obviously this isn’t a thought we go around with at the front of our consciousness all the time – we would probably diminish aspects of our lives if we did – there would be a reluctance to plan or look ahead, but neither is it something that should be so far away from our day to day consciousness that it doesn’t have some kind of impact on our life. When we get to a place of balance between being aware of our mortality and yet also how wonderful this life is, yes it has its challenges and ups and downs and at times may seem like a roller coaster ride we want to leave but it also a wonderful gift, then we are well placed to make the most of our lives, to make it magnificent. So how do we start doing that, well here are a few steps that anyone can take to start making the most of life whatever situation you currently find yourself in.

Comparing yourself with others isn’t helpful There will always be people who seem to be more successful, happier, fulfilled or valued than you. But it is worth remembering that from the outside that may appear to be the case but if you talk to them that might not be how they see their lives at all. So, don’t waste energy on comparing yourself for your life to others. ‘A flower doesn’t think of competing with the flower next to it, it just blooms’ Zen Shin

Accept yourself The fact is you are human and that means you won’t be perfect. But you have skills and qualities that make you unique. And as a human you can make conscious decisions to improve or change, to learn new things and develop new habits so life isn’t static, and neither are you. Accepting yourself doesn’t mean you can’t change and develop, on the contrary by accepting ourselves we are often better able to have a clarity about ways in which we can develop. I have worked with many people whose biggest struggle is accepting who they are, and it is certainly easier to do this when you stop comparing yourself to others.

Value Yourself Once you have accepted yourself the next step is to learn to really value yourself. That means taking care of yourself both mentally and physically and acknowledging that your needs are important, even though you may have lots of responsibilities towards others. Learning to value yourself means learning to say no to some things, to realise that you may be too tired or too busy to do certain things, it is ok to be honest. ‘The moment you value yourself the whole world values you’ Harbhajan Singh Yogi

Take responsibility for your actions All sorts of things can happen that we don’t plan, and that may be hard to deal with, anything from an inconsiderate driver to serious illness or loss. At times life hurts and as humans we experience a range of emotions in response to what happens. But we also always have a choice about how we react to what is happening. That is us taking responsibility. Not blaming others but rather understanding that whatever happens we must always be responsible for our own actions and reactions and for the consequences they bring. Be kind to yourself One aspect of self-care that is very easily overlooked is that of kindness. I have met people who may go to great lengths to eat the right foods, to exercise, to manage stress and yet they still have this ‘inner voice’ that beats them up every day telling them they are no good or will fail or generally making them feel bad about something. We all have one and we can be very cruel indeed with ourselves. Try talking to yourself the way they would to a friend, with kindness! ‘Compassion for others begins with kindness to ourselves’ Pema Chodron

Keep the big picture in mind BUT enjoy the moment It is important to see the big picture, having a destination is important on a journey. But as we only have one life it is worth taking ‘the scenic route’. As discussed at the start, each day is a gift and by focussing on moments we can get the most out of all sorts of situations. You can choose to let the irritations or worries of a day rob you of any pleasure – or make an alternative choice and enjoy each day and each moment.

Be grateful It seems so easy to focus on the things we haven’t got, the things that are ‘wrong’ with life, the problems rather than the blessings. Some of this may be down to personality but we are all able to make a choice to focus on the good things. Think about all the good, all that we do have, even if that isn’t all that we want. When we do that often we find life simply gets better. It doesn’t always happen easily but over time you can train yourself to focus on the good things and a great way to start is simply by being grateful. Try each morning thinking of three things you are grateful for and soon you will learn to shift your focus. ‘The single greatest thing you can do to change your life today would be to start being grateful for what you have right now. And the more grateful you are the more you get’ Oprah Winfrey We only have one life, lets do al we can to make it magnificent! www.attunededucation.com

Tea Time The affiliation we all have for the great British tradition of afternoon tea, shows no signs of dwindling, it seems to becoming more and more popular, with tea rooms and hotels throughout the country offering permutations of this centuries-old tradition. Our latest afternoon tea experience saw us visiting the country house hotel Woodland Manor, in the village of Clapham in Bedfordshire.

Afternoon tea is served in the hotel’s recently renovated orangery, a bright airy space bringing the outside in, with flowers and greenery and lovely views over the secluded gardens, creating an ambience of calm and tranquillity, a perfect backdrop to enjoy afternoon tea.

Cascading down a three-tiered cake stand, the food was tempting us to begin. Finger-sized sandwiches of Severn and Wye salmon with cream cheese on granary bread, beetroot hummus with seeds and radish that injected colour onto the plate and tasted delicious (my favourite), traditional cucumber dill and cream cheese was a creamy delight and the lemon and thyme chicken went down a treat, accompanied by a glass of sparkling Chapel Down wine, and of course tea.

The scones were warm and fresh and the cakes small delights of yumminess, perfect for the sweet toothed amongst us, delicate and not overwhelming, traditional favourites all in miniature form including a faultless chocolate brownie, cherry Bakewell tart, mini meringue, bitter chocolate tart with berries and the most delicious mixed fruit tart. Woodland Manor have scored full marks for their afternoon tea, sandwiches are fresh and tasty, desserts are enough to satisfy your sweet craving but not daunting and the scones are warm and fresh and just begging to be smothered in an ample sized serving of Cornish clotted cream, along with strawberry preserve. Even the crockery is traditional and just adds to the whole ambience of the experience.

Just what all afternoon teas should be made of, a relaxing environment, delicious sweet and savoury choices, a glass of bubbles and of course tea, but don’t just take our word for it go along and experience it for yourself. Traditional afternoon tea is £20 per person, sparkling wine afternoon tea is £30 per person. To book call 01234 363281 or visit www.woodlandmanorhotel.co.uk

Fry’s Footie corner

We have already completed a few months of the regular football season and at Peterborough United, it has been an excellent start, but I have been in the game long enough to know that a good start doesn’t necessarily mean that it is going to be a successful campaign come next May.

Of course, we want it to be and we are striving hard behind the scenes to achieve those goals. However, there are clubs across the football pyramid that are fearing the worst after finding themselves rooted to the foot of a division – some have even parted company with managers after disastrous results.

They say around this time of the year it is ‘peak’ sacking season. I find that crazy. How can you give a manager a couple of months to determine whether it is going to be a successful outcome? But unfortunately that is the modern world of football. Of course one of the biggest talking points of recent months is the row between Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba at the world’s biggest club, Manchester United. I have a vested interest as a former United schoolboy.

As someone who has been in the game in a variety of different roles, I can see both sides of the argument but ultimately there should never be a situation where a player has more influence than a manager.

Therefore, as good as Pogba was in the World Cup, for harmony purposes if nothing else, the Frenchman needs to be sold. It is causing too much disruption. Jose hasn’t been a success for United’s standards but he has made more of an impact than Pogba has.

It will be interesting to see how that pans out because the transfer window doesn’t reopen until January. And who could afford him? Not many that is for sure. When you sign Pogba, you sign more than just the player. You sign the haircut, the social media, the music video – it is a sad state of affairs if you ask me. Come on The Posh!

TRAVEL

Middlethorpe Hall & Spa

oct2018.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 30/09/2018 21:46 Page 56

City, Country and Cuisine at

Middlethorpe Hall & Spa Most of us are glued to the latest ITV period drama ‘Vanity Fair’ and who isn’t excited about the upcoming Downton Abbey movie, for some reason we all love a period drama, whether it’s the romance of it all, the amazing period houses or just a way for us to see how life was in bygone years, whatever the fascination there’s no denying we’re hooked.

Which is why whenever we get invited to visit a country house hotel we can’t wait to see what delights hide behind its doors. This time we were heading off to York to spend a couple of days at Middlethorpe Hall, a William III country house built in 1699 and set in 20 acres of its own beautiful gardens and parklands and just two miles from York’s city centre.

Entering the house, through iron railings we are carefully watched by the stone eagle positioned on the top of the house (the Barlow family crest). Walking through the doors into the slate floored entrance hall, we effortlessly check in and are whisked up the large oak staircase to our room. Middlethorpe Hall, has 29 bedrooms which are spread out across the main house, with the exception of 4 Courtyard suites.

Our room was on the first floor, a large space overlooking the impressive gardens, with large windows that allowed light into the room and gave us spectacular views as far as the eye could see. Traditionally decorated and full of character, with a large four poster bed taking pride of place in the middle of the room. Floral and chintz fabrics dressed the windows and the bed, and the feature fireplace was

complimented with elegant antique furniture including a writing desk, large wooden wardrobe and dressing table all creating a traditional period style room, without being old fashioned. The perfect retreat to sit back, relax and enjoy the feeling of being Lord and Lady of the Manor.

The bathroom was stylish and spacious, with the added bonus of white fluffy gowns, slippers and Floris toiletries to pamper yourself with. The temptation to slip on a gown and snuggle up on one of the window seats looking out over the magical gardens nearly won me over, but then hubbie mentioned a glass of bubbles on the lawn and the pull was just too great. After a ramble around the gardens, a soak in the bath and a glass of wine in the drawing room that was adorned with paintings, beautiful antiques and a twinkling ornate chandelier, we made our way into the wood panelled dining room. Offering tranquil vistas over the lawns, and an ambience that has you waiting in anticipation of the delights to follow.

The restaurant has twice been awarded ‘Restaurant of the Year’ in the Visit York awards and still retains 2AA Rosettes, so you can see why we were slightly excited to be experiencing this culinary journey. Pursuing the menu over a glass of wine and canapes it is evident from the dishes that a lot of thought has gone into the ingredients used, which only made it harder for us to decide. Finally, starters were chosen, crab ravioli with coconut, lemongrass and lime, the ravioli was delicious and cooked perfectly, the crab was plentiful and full of flavour a real hit. For me though, the stand out dish from the whole menu

oct2018.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/10/2018 19:51 Page 57

was my starter of beetroot risotto with whipped goats cheese and horseradish, this was absolutely divine, not only did it look exquisite it filled my palette with flavours of beetroot mixed with creamy goats cheese and textures that merged together effortlessly. After the risotto the mains had a hard act to follow. We both chose the salt aged spring lamb with asparagus, goats curd, baby turnip and lambs fat potatoes, the lamb was tender and literally melted in the mouth, the combination of flavours were executed to perfection. Dessert was just as appetising gariguette strawberry clotted cream served with shortbread and basil and Yorkshire rhubarb with white chocolate and gingerbread, exquisite and flavoursome, the perfect end to a culinary delight.

Breakfast the next morning was served in the restaurant, and it seemed only right that as we were in Yorkshire it was only right to have the Yorkshire breakfast, with produce sourced locally, this was definitely the right choice. The pull of a walk round the gardens after breakfast was a must, beautifully maintained with their own secret garden which has an almost magical enchantment about it that had us glad we’d decided to explore. All too soon though, it was time to make our way to the spa for a pampering facial. The spa is housed across the road, built behind the facade of two listed Edwardian cottages, in its own secluded garden. There’s an indoor swimming pool, steam room and sauna, so I left hubbie to enjoy all the facilities whilst I went and experienced the ultimate Aromatherapy Associates Facial that had me feeling refreshed and rejuvenated and ready to explore York.

Everywhere we turned the narrow-cobbled streets lead us to hidden delights such as The Nutcracker Christmas Shop (open all year round), Pivni Real Ale House (be sure to try their cheese and pickle pie) the traditional fudge shop (you can watch how they make the fudge and taste it before you buy). Don’t forget a visit to York Minster to explore 2,000 years of history - there’s just so much to see and do, the list is endless, which means you’ll just have to come back for another visit, which will of course mean you’ll have to have another stay at Middlethorpe Hall and play at being Lord and Lady once again. Time to Escape Set in three acres of secluded gardens and adjacent to some of the most famous paddocks and training stables in the world is Bedford Lodge Hotel and Spa in Newmarket, a country house hotel that blends old and new together effortlessly. Housed in a separate building from the hotel, the spa is recognised as one of the best in the east of England, and we can see why. The oasis of serenity and relaxation hits you as soon as you arrive, surrounded by its own peaceful gardens the walkway to the spa is reminiscent of an Italian vineyard with pillars either side and vines growing above your head. Once inside it’s time to truly relax and recharge your batteries, beginning with a welcome drink and homemade lavender and ginger macaron (the best I’ve tasted) served in the spacious lounge area, decorated in soothing grey tones with large armchairs and gold hues, the ambience of calm seems to cocoon you in its arms as you prepare for your spa journey. The spa itself is set over two levels, the second floor mezzanine area leads to an outdoor roof terrace with a hot tub and loungers inside and out. From the mezzanine you can look over the indoor hydrotherapy pool, which I have to admit is where I spent most of my time, housed within a glass dome that overlooks the gardens - with five different zones, from light bubbles to a pummelling fountain that feels like a massage, the whole experience was one of complete serenity.

I managed to prise myself away from the bubbles long enough to enjoy a blissful ‘Strawberries & Cream’ Rasul with hubbie who had spent most of the morning alternating between the steam room and sauna room.

Hidden away in our own private room, we proceeded to prep our skin with a strawberry scented salt scrub, before stepping into a twinkly lit steam room and applying a vanilla mud mask that slowly melted into the skin, leaving it feeling beautifully exfoliated and silky smooth. This sweet treat had the most delicious scent and the whole experience left us feeling refreshed and revitalised. After our treatment we went back into the lounge area and enjoyed a light tasty lunch of crab salad for hubbie and haloumi salad for me.

All too soon our refreshingly relaxing spa day had come to an end, but we weren’t too disappointed as we were heading over to the hotel to extend our away time and stay overnight.

The hotel has 77 bedrooms and luxury suites that have been designed by one of London’s leading interior designers offering guests the height of luxury and comfort, but it’s not the rooms that make this hotel stand out it’s the 2AA Rosette Squires restaurant that really does take your stay to the next level.

The name ‘Squires’ is steeped in history in that Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa was once owned by Squire, George Baird aka ‘The Squire’, a notorious gentlemen rider and trainer. On acquiring the hotel, George built a boxing saloon on one side and his enthusiasms included field sports and an affair with Lillie Langtry… former mistress of the Prince of Wales! The restaurant itself is atmospheric, with dim lighting, soft music, red walls and large comfy chairs, would the food live up to the restaurants reputation?

We began with a glass of prosecco whilst we pondered the menu, full of delicious looking dishes made using the finest seasonal ingredients and wherever possible sourced locally. We started off with sea bream fillet with beetroot, smoked bacon aioli, apple & mustard remoulade with black truffle shavings, beautifully presented with an array of flavours that were a real treat to the palette. Hubbie chose the truffle ravioli, served with buffalo mozzarella and sautéed wild mushrooms, another big hit, fresh and mouth-wateringly delicious. For the main event we both decided on the duo of lamb that consisted of spring lamb rump, 24-hour salt baked shoulder, creamed potato, garlic, chives and sautéed spinach, the meat was succulent and literally fell away, the combination of taste and texture was divine, and the vibrant mix of colours were reflected in the rich taste.

To finish, I opted for mint ice cream, but this wasn’t just any mint ice cream it was like eating fresh mint leaves picked straight from the garden, utterly divine and perfect for cleansing the palette. Hubbie chose sticky toffee pudding with Tonka ice cream which was a heavenly indulgence and certainly meant a little longer would have to be spent at the gym (the hotel has its own private gym) the next day. With the delicious food, impeccable service and attention to detail it’s easy to see why eating at Squires restaurant is a memorable experience. The feeling of perfectly sculpted overindulgence certainly extends to the restaurant and the delightful food it serves. Retiring after dinner for a restful night’s sleep, it’s clear that Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa is the perfect bolt hole to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Somewhere to cosset yourself whenever the outside world becomes just that little too much. BOOK IT

U by Uniworld The River Cruise for a New Generation Thanks to an increased prominence in TV advertising and episodes of Cruising with Jayne McDonald, you could be forgiven for thinking that river cruising was enjoyed exclusively by Baby Boomers. Mixology classes and silent discos aren’t usually what you’d expect on a river cruise, but trust me when I say that U by Uniworld is a river cruise line like no other. They’re innovators and pioneers, who are turning river cruising on its head by focusing on the young (and young at heart).

First, you’ll notice the ships themselves. There are currently two (the A, which cruises the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers through the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary, while the B cruises the Seine from Paris), and there is no mistaking either as these ships have been given a sexy, sleek ‘U’ makeover, cutting a striking look with their black exterior with neon-lit accents, which change colour nightly. Step onboard the B – as I did for a recent seven-night Seine river cruise – and you’ll discover interior décor with flair, with the ship resplendent in monochrome stripes and geometric patterns throughout (thankfully, I managed to avoid any hangovers during my cruise). You’ll be greeted by a youthful and friendly crew, kitted out in stylish black jeans and T-shirts emblazoned with the U emblem, giving off a more informal vibe than more traditional-style crew uniforms.

U by Uniworld have truly overturned the traditions of river cruising to create a river cruise experience that’s perfectly tailored

to millennials. With millennials keen to go green, U by Uniworld is paperless, so daily cruise itineraries are sent straight to your phone via email and the ship’s WhatsApp group that everyone is added to. There’s no need to worry about your phone battery draining, as USB plug ins are helpfully available everywhere throughout the ship, including the restaurant, lounge, and even the Sun Deck, so you can stay connected with the ship’s complimentary WiFi to your heart’s content. Daily schedules are flexible, and after a late night of dancing, banter, and drinking, you’d be grateful for the later starts, with most excursions generally starting between 10 and 11am, as opposed to the more customary 8.30-9am start. Unlike other river cruises, two meals a day are included – brunch and dinner – served buffet style, giving you plenty of opportunity to discover local cuisine ashore independently, and also the flexibility to enjoy brunch and dinner whenever you want, without any stuffy formality to worry about.

There’s always at least one included excursion or shoreside activity in each port of call – including bike rides and hikes, and even bar crawls when the ship’s staying overnight; on our cruise, we headed out into Rouen for some local tipples and to see the fabulous Light & Sound Show bringing the gorgeously Gothic cathedral to life in a riot of colour, and had a total of three nights to explore Paris, whilst other cruise itineraries offer the opportunity to explore the nightlife of vibrant cities such as

oct2018.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/10/2018 19:55 Page 63

Amsterdam, Vienna, Frankfurt, Passau, Budapest, and Regensburg, amongst others. Other nights, the ship itself becomes a floating night club with local DJs brought onboard, and (the most popular evening highlight) a Silent Disco. You can tailor your cruise to suit your interests with the optional ‘U Time’ excursions, but don’t expect sedate panoramic coach tours. Instead, get ready to strap your legs around a hipster biker in tweed and zip around Paris on the back of a motorbike (or in a retro sidecar), or spend a night at the famous Moulin Rouge show, complete with champagne.

Taking river cruising to the Instagram generation, not only do you have the coolest looking ships on the rivers, you have the flexibility, independence and personalisation that many of Generation Y have come to expect from their travels – but with the added bonus of only needing to unpack once for your floating, riverside hotel as you city hop between some of Europe’s most dazzling and enchanting cities, and delve into hidden gem villages and small towns.

Scorpio (23 October – 21 November) You may want to strike out in some new direction because of changes around you or because of loss of interest in old circumstances or associations. The expansive one will bring vivid, lively and dramatic interchanges that can enrich your communication skills and enhance your ideas, attitudes and opinions. Teachers, study, dramatic enterprises and bold projects may play an important role for you. Favourable Dates: October 3, 4, 12, 13, 21, 22 Favourable Colours: White & Blue

Sagittarius (22 November - 21 December) In this month, working matters and personal relationships will somehow become intertwined. Relationships with coworkers will be important so give them perceptive attention. A romantic liaison could form itself with someone either in your working situation or somehow connected with it and you may find you have interests or ideas in common. If attached, you may simply go for broke and enjoy your social life as much as you can. Favourable Dates: October 1, 3, 10, 12, 19, 23 Favourable Colours: White & Brown Capricorn (22 December – 19 January) A busy calendar, a good cycle of mobility and some clear and versatile thinking will keep you in trim in every respect. Aquarius (20 January – 18 February) Friends, collective effort and common goals are the keys to success. However, you may need to dream new dreams to find what you are really looking for. Some of you will find it is necessary to withdraw from what you're doing in order to walk a more creative or spiritual path. There may be an ending or a change with friends or associates, one that comes out of practical necessity. Favourable Dates: October 1, 4, 10, 13, 19, 22 Favourable Colours: White & Yellow Pisces (19 February – 20 March) This month will bring practical opportunities. Make sure you learn what you need to know to make the most of them. A creative project or spiritual connection may fizzle out, yet this could also signal a new start along different lines. The emphasis this month is not so much on romance as it is on how you make relationships work and how you conduct yourself within them. Favourable Dates: October 3, 5, 12, 14, 21, 23 Favourable Colours: Blue & Grey

Aries (21 March – 19 April) You may find that personal magnetism and dealings with people can help to boost your income or mark a new path for you to take. This month will be full of excitement, but you will need to keep on track and not overestimate yourself, your ability or your situation. This is a time to resolve outstanding money problems, not to enter into

new arrangements or to extend your spending. Favourable Dates: October 2, 7, 11, 16, 20, 25 Favourable Colours: White & Purple

Taurus (20 April – 20 May) This is the year to break through old fears or barriers that you have around success. Aspire to the heights but work through any obstacles that come from within. If your confidence bears any scars from your family or childhood situation, this is the time to seek healing by facing the very thing you fear and negotiating your way through with a 'down to earth' approach. Favourable Dates: October 1, 9, 10, 18, 19, 27 Favourable Colours: Yellow & Red

Gemini (21 May – 20 June) New goals or dreams may crystallize. New friends and associates will become important as you find yourself coming out of a cycle of retreat, development or withdrawal that has been part of your life for some time now. You can achieve them through cooperation with likeminded people. There could be crucial changes around money matters. Some of you may move into an expanded area of income or spending. Favourable Dates: October 4, 5, 13, 14, 22, 23 Favourable Colours: Blue & Red Cancer (21 June – 22 July) You may be drawn into a new walk of life, somehow becoming acquainted with a different sphere of human activity, one outside the framework of previous experience. Your domestic or emotional life will ask a great deal of you and many of you will simply have to accept the pressures or responsibilities as they are. You will have intense desires and a need to push ahead. Channel this energy wisely. Favourable Dates: October 2, 4, 11, 13, 20, 22 Favourable Colours: Blue & Green Leo (23 July – 22 August) You may be more introspective than usual or your attention may be taken up with projects, deals or negotiations and thus you may be more inclined to keep things to yourself. Changes in circumstances and people around you may bring change to the direction or pattern of your life and goals. The workload will be higher, but the subsequent achievement or possible fulfillment will be worth the extra effort. Favourable Dates: October 4, 5, 13, 14, 22, 23 Favourable Colours: Red & Green

Virgo (23 August – 22 September) You will find the advancement you need through people and connections. You may need to revise your hopes and dreams, giving them a more practical or realistic edge.
