Welcome... Hi everyone This month the affinity office has been manic, we have been working on this issue, our a/W Wedding magazine (which is out the beginning of october) and our very own fabulously fantastic Calendar Girls Calendar to coincide with october and Breast Cancer awareness Month. each month 1,000 women in the uK die from breast cancer, so we thought we would do our bit to raise much needed funds for Breakthrough Breast Cancer's work so that one day this figure says ZeRo!

all our regular features are still here, including a review on the luxurious Raithwaite estate (page70), a great competition and readers offer from Y Spa (page 20), halloween treats (page 69) and details of our spectacular affinity Wedding Showcase next March (page 79). This is an issue not to be missed!

nine lovely local ladies gave up their time and joined myself and Julia for a fun photoshoot at the impressive Mansion House in old Warden, where, with the help of our wonderful photographer david from vadisoro, we have created our very own take on the original Calendar Girls Calendar. So to see some familiar ladies from local businesses, as you’ve never seen them before, please turn to page 22. details on how to purchase the calendar are also on this page.

Have a Spooktacular Halloween

Protect your Health this Autumn

Eat Well o

ur long, hot, wonderful summer has come to an abrupt end with a sudden drop in temperature and plenty of rain. autumn has arrived! ideally, for the body to adapt the transition of the seasons happens gradually. any sudden change puts our immune system under stress and we lay ourselves open to coughs and colds. our immune system has some specific nutritional needs and increasing antioxidants vitamin a, C, e, along with the minerals zinc and selenium will help protect you and your family from all sorts of infection, both bacterial and viral. obviously, it is ideal to increase your antioxidants from a food based source, but sometimes, after illness, to prepare for or recover from surgery, with a serious chronic condition, it is necessary to take a good quality supplement. So here are some ideas as to where to find these nutrients in foods:

vitamin E – all whole grains wheat germ, sunflower and olive oil, eggs, soya beans, dark leafy greens and brussel sprouts have good levels of this particular nutrient.

vitamin A - can come from a vegetable source in the form of beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is in all orange coloured fruit and vegetables including, dried apricots, carrots, butternut squash, sweet potatoes and eggs (the yolks in particular); equally spinach and kale are an excellent source. So a carrot juice a day with added ginger would be a perfect addition to your daily diet during the autumn and winter months, and for those who like offal, lamb and calf liver also offers a rich source.

Zinc - all fish and seafood offer a rich source of zinc. However, vegetarians can look to adding a handful of sunflower and pumpkin seeds roasted in tamari – saltfree soy sauce - as a delicious snack to make the 30mg daily requirement. Selenium - We are all at risk from a selenium deficiency unfortunately, as the quality of our soil has been depleted, as intensive farming methods have destroyed selenium levels. However, eating 3-4 Brazil nuts a day will give the Rda for this essential mineral. Button mushrooms, salmon, cod, onions and home grown tomatoes, shrimp and mustard seeds also offer a source, as does butter.

vitamin C - i think everyone now knows the value of vitamin C to protect the body from infection, but taken in higher doses it is great to fight a cold by aiding a speedy recovery. This is a water soluble vitamin, so we cannot store it in the body. Some extra supplementation of a low acid supplement with bioflavanoids is extremely beneficial for our health. The Rda for vitamin C is 75mg for women and 90mg for men. However, supplements range from 100mg-1000mg. all smokers need to be taking 200- 500mg supplement daily along with 400 iu of vitamin e. (This is not to condone smoking in any way, but for those not ready to give-up their habit it MaY offer some protection from the harmful effects of smoking) but is really no substitute for giving-up completely. Rich food sources include red peppers, broccoli, guava, parsley, kale and chilli peppers.

Whilst these foods offer both the opportunity to boost your immunity in order to protect your general health, if your immune system has been severely compromised with a serious health condition, there are many wonderful herbs to stimulate it or calm, balance and re-train it as in the case of hay fever, auto-immune conditions and recurring virus and bacterial infections.

Halloween Hues As the nights draw in, the leaves start to turn and the Halloween party invitations begin to arrive, make-up trends this autumn will take on a dark, sultry but ultimately wearable theme. Forget crazy catwalk looks that only supermodels dare to be seen in; autumn 2013 is all about creating make-up looks to suit everyone.

Eyes orange tones aren’t just for pumpkins this Halloween, but for the eyes too. Coppery orange shades are a key on-trend look for this season and are versatile and wearable. Benecos natural Baked eyeshadow in Mokka (£6.95) will recreate the looks seen on the catwalks by the likes of Givenchy and J. Mendel top tip: apply Chocolate generously over the eyelid and blend with Mokka up into the socket and underneath the eye for a vibrant, sculpted look.

Affinity master Oct 2013 7_Layout 1 copy 19/09/2013 08:11 Page 13

Lips Red lips and semi-stain pinks will also be bang on trend this autumn, just in time to create a sexy ‘vamp’ look for Halloween. The catwalk models at emporio armani and oscar de la Renta have been sporting red hues of lipstick, whilst semi-stained pink lips were popular at Christian dior and Miu Miu. Benecos natural lipstick in Marry Me (£6.95) – a bright cherry inspired red for a super sexy look. alternatively, Benecos’ Hot Pink natural lipstick (£6.95), blended from the middle out, will create a perfect pink stain effect.

Eyes The cat liner flick is another hot look this autumn and is not only on-trend but will also look fabulous teamed with a pair of killer heels for Halloween. Go for a dramatic shape or deep flick, as seen on the catwalks at lanvin and Monique lhuillier. To re-create this seductive look, the Benecos natural Kajal eyeliner (3.95) is a must-have. top tip: use the Benecos Sponge applicator (£3.95) to blend any harsh lines for a softer, sultrier effect. Benecos’ high quality make-up range offers chic, trendy and inexpensive, certified natural make-up to suit everyone. www.benecos.co.uk

Trials on two wheels

a

s i get older i seem to have to work harder to prevent my waist increasing so when my fella suggested that he buy me a bike, i thought it was a great idea. it was a proper girl bike, retro looking and with a basket. So the idea of burning up calories while saving money, not using the car and therefore noT having to pay escalating parking prices and being out in the fresh air, was all very appealing. i am talking here # fitness, "" $ $trust about recreational cycling – $not high& level & lycra will never be worn, but pottering to town on a me, sunny day seemed a lovely prospect.

are the inconsiderate drivers. one day i was riding past parked cars when another car overtook me, then pulled directly across me into a parking space on my left. Why on earth she couldn’t wait just a few seconds to let me cycle past is beyond me! Sadly this was not an isolated incident and the scary part is that i think many drivers, despite numerous advertising campaigns, just don’t seem to see cyclists. especially drivers who have parked and who then seem to completely stop using their mirrors and merrily open the door just as i am passing, forcing me to pull out into the path of a passing vehicle, whose driver will shake his/her fist at me. i would gesture back, but i wobble when i take my hands off, so i silently simmer instead. So far i have stopped short of getting off my bike and beginning an altercation as i am afraid that someone may feel the full force of my bicycle pump!

My maiden voyage was not without incident. You must appreciate it is quite a few years since i have been on a bike, and i learned the hard way that when dismounting i need to lift my leg high enough to get it over the cross bar (although it is actually quite low as it’s a town bike ). The first time i tried to lift my leg over i caught the bar with my foot which sent me and the bike tumbling to the floor. it was not dignified, as bike, me and the entire contents of my handbag sprawled on the ground. at least it was grass so the bike wasn’t scratched, and importantly neither was i (though my pride, which had obviously come before, was a bit dented). Gathering up the contents of my bag i made a mental note that i needed to purchase a rucksack and keep on with my yoga, so i can lift my leg high - well higher than on that occasion at any rate.

My fella tells me i must ‘claim my road’ but when the vehicle behind me is a smoke belching, engine roaring, ear deafening and positively life threatening bus, well….. basically the road is his and i skulk defeated onto the path. Sadly that is not without its hazards; low dangling branches, potholes, dogs, and of course pedestrians the worst variety being unpredictable small children prone to sudden movements and impromptu dashes into the path of oncoming two wheeled vehicles. But i keep on venturing out on my two, trusty wheels, although following a shopping trip to town that left me with several heavy bags, i discovered another hazard– remembering where i had parked the darned thing!

So i continued through the park only to face a dog which didn’t just run in front of my bike but took root on the path right in front of my wheel. Picture the scene : old couple on my left and woman with buggy to my right, so i braked hard (at least they worked) and managed somehow not to fly headlong over the handlebars while silly dog barked at me. The lady with the buggy called her dog and i ventured to suggest that she keeps it under better control in the park (there are signs to that $ $ i$%should ) $ effect) but she became immediately abusive. % have taken the high road (moral not literal) but my frustration got the better of me and a few happy minutes were shared hurling abuse at each other as$ i $ rode away. not my finest hour i admit. Since then i have used my cycle most days and enjoyed riding into Bedford and to other local venues. But i have discovered there are a lot of hazards. By far the worst 16

The Hair you Want These TEN hair care tips will help you get the hair you’ve always wanted

1

3 2

Your hair is at its most fragile when wet, so avoid excessive brushing or combing until it's mostly dry.

use a natural-bristle brush, it is softer and more flexible, which means less damage to your hair.

after conditioning, rinse your hair with cold water. This helps to seal the cuticle, making it harder for moisture to enter the hair follicle, which can cause frizz.

5

4 if you straighten your hair, start with an anti-frizz serum to create a moisture barrier and add a heat protectant to prevent your strands from being damaged whilst styling. 18

Spritz a volumizing spray at your roots when your hair is dry, then flip your head upside down and blow-dry. Finally, gently smooth out any stray strands with a brush.

Affinity master Oct 2013 7_Layout 1 copy 19/09/2013 08:12 Page 17

7 6

always try to opt for the warm setting on your dryer and hold the dryer 6 to 8 inches from your tresses. Be sure to point the airflow down on the hair shaft to prevent frizz.

avoid using the hottest setting on your hair dryer, as it can be damaging to your strands, especially if you're pairing it with another hot tool, like straightners.

8

9 Revive your curls with dry shampoo. Simply spritz your hair and run your fingers through as if you were pulling it up into a ponytail.

10 Taking care of longer tresses requires frequent trims (every six to eight weeks) and conditioning the ends every other day to prevent dry out.

Stress, smoking, and bad eating habits can make your hair dull and prone to breakage.

affinity Calendar Girls e

very october the uK turns PinK to promote Breast Cancer awareness. each month 1,000 women in the uK die from breast cancer, so Breakthrough Breast Cancer's work has never been more important. This october at affinity we wanted to do something to raise funds for Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s research, a cause that is close to many people’s hearts, and to remind women that knowing their own bodies could save their lives.

Here at affinity, with the help of ten local girls, (who i have to say were all great fun and fantastic sports), we have put together our own Calendar girls Calendar!! We have 1,000 a3 size calendars to sell and hope people will be fighting to get their hands on them, go on help us sell out! – Thank you The calendars will be available to purchase at the cost of £10 (£3 from each calendar goes to Breast Cancer Resaearch) from businesses locally (check out our FB page for stockists) or mail order. For more information: jane@affinitymag.co.uk

Remember being breast aware is as simple as tLC: touCh your breasts. Can you feel anything unusual? LooK for changes. is there any change in shape or texture? ChECK anything unusual with your doctor.

Training for a Triathlon A beginners guide So you’ve got your bike, you’ve got your running kit and you’ve got your swimming costume and goggles, now what? it’s time to start your triathlon training. a triathlon isn’t something you can just rock up to and hope for the best - the risk of injury and doing yourself harm is simply too high, so training needs to be taken seriously. For a sprint triathlon i would advise you start training at least 3-4 months before your event and for an ironman triathlon a minimum of 6 months will be required. if you are an absolute beginner (someone who has never done swimming, running or cycling before) then you would require even longer. 24

Affinity master Oct 2013 7_Layout 1 copy 19/09/2013 08:13 Page 23

Your workouts and training sessions should reflect the type of triathlon you are doing. For instance if you’re doing a sprint then your workouts should be based around working with speed. Fartlek training is key for this type of event. Fartlek is a Swedish term meaning ‘speed play’. it is not as structured as interval or HiiT training but still has huge benefits. Simply find ‘landmarks’ along your running or cycle route and sprint to one, jog/cycle to the next, sprint even faster to the next one, then easy jog/cycle to the next. By running and cycling at different paces for different distances you improve mental strength and stamina both of huge importance on race day! if you’re doing an ironman event then there are no two ways about it - you’re going to have to get out for long rides, long swims and long runs. However you must ensure your flexibility training is just as good as your cardio training. Tight hip flexors, tight pectorals (chest) and tight calves are likely to start to cause you grief, so stretch daily, invest in a foam roller and find a good sports massage therapist to keep those sore muscles at bay. Be sure to get your body ready for the changes of movement and muscle use and avoid ‘jelly legs’ by doing at least one ‘brick’ session a week. This is when you do one event and follow it immediately with another e.g. a swim followed by a bike ride or a bike ride followed by a run. even if it’s just a short distance it will help you get used to the transitions. Talking of transitions....if you can practice your change overs from swim to bike and bike to run you can shave minutes off your time. it sounds stupid but it’s free time! Hannah Bedford, Triathlon Coach says she has got many athletes down from 2-3 minutes to 30 seconds by taking them to a spot to practice. leading up to your race, plan your nutrition. This is where many first timers go wrong. eat safe food the day before a race (no curries!). Something like salmon with brown rice or chicken and quinoa or a baked potato with tuna would be ideal. avoid eating a large meal too late, as this will disrupt your sleep patterns before the big day. during the race you may wish to use gel sachets or electrolyte drinks but only do so if you’ve used them during training - these can sometimes have a ‘funny’ effect on your tummy and the last thing you want mid way through your run is to need to find a loo! if your predicted time for a sprint is over an hour (which for most beginners is about right) then a gel sachet would be recommended mid-way through the bike ride. Good luck with your training! a special good luck to all the participants of the Bedford triathlon on 6th october. i will be there cheering you on!

Treatment of the Month the next generation of waxing

e

ver since Carrie Bradshaw let out that yelp and we all winced along with her during the infamous Brazilian wax back in 2000, we've all dreamt of a time when waxing would become not only pain free but dare we say it a pleasant experience! Well now, thanks to some significant advances in polymer technology, outback organics has created outback Gold, a buttery soft peelable and quick drying wax that is applied in thin, single layers with no need for fiddly figure of eight patterns. launching into urban Retreat at Harrods this month, the next generation of waxing has finally arrived. as with all its new services, urban Retreat has trialed this product for the past three months and has found the polymer technology effectively shrink wraps the hair as it dries and can work on areas that have been recently shaved or with as little as only four days re-growth. So ladies and men our days of being caught mid wax are over! outback Gold is tough on hair but gentle on skin and is as easy to use as strip wax. it remains supple when cool and removes cleanly from the skin, with no stickiness or unpleasant residue. The low melting point improves comfort on the most sensitive of body parts for both women and men and it's an added bonus that it's shimmery gold in colour. Waxing expert andy Rouillard, who has trained a number of the urban Retreat team in men's waxing and was instrumental in the development of outback Gold, says: "urban Retreat are renowned for the comfort and efficiency of their waxing treatments. With everincreasing demand for intimate hair removal services and clients expecting the very best, outback Gold meets the challenge head on by making waxing a more pleasant experience for all. Coupled with the outback organics range of pre and post-waxing skincare products, hair removal at urban Retreat is a truly luxurious beauty treatment."

Who would have thought waxing would ever be described as pleasant let alone luxurious? 26

Beauty from the Inside Out 10 Changes to Your Life in 10 Days To Improve Your Skin, Hair, Attitude, Wellbeing & Health taken from ‘the Book’ we share with you:

We all deserve to have the tools to protect our health, and to bring more vitality and quality of life into our lives. Linde Taylor has spent four years of her life reasearching and experiencing ways to do this and shares it with us in her new book ‘The Book – A Life Manual’

ten changes to your life over ten days............ 'The Book' is designed to give you fundamental knowledge to preserve and protect your health so that you can "skid into your grave sideways as a Centenarian and not at a young age!"

'The Book' contains the knowledge for the reader to determine what is right in terms of health and lifestyle to greatly improve health, prevent ill-health and defer ageing, physically and mentally. The suggested solutions are bullet-pointed summary at the end of each chapter to be used as a quick reference on a day-to-day basis. They are realistic and surprisingly simple, in most cases, to be adopted straightaway or factored gradually into our dayto-day lives.

Breathing Properly - Practice a deep-breathing exercise both in the morning when you get up and before you go to bed at night for 5 - 10 minutes, preferably outside in bare feet, if not, ensure you are by an open window or door or on a balcony or decking for the fresh air.

32

Affinity master Oct 2013 7_Layout 1 copy 19/09/2013 08:17 Page 31

Posture - Improving your posture will make you feel on top of the world. Try this whilst you are sitting at your computer or anywhere whether walking, sitting, standing, working: sit/stand up straight, breathe into your tummy and up into your chest, when you breathe out release the air from your chest and then your tummy by gently bringing in your tummy. Whilst you do this drop your shoulders, tuck your pelvis under and push your chin back and down so that your spine is straight. Ensure that you are checking yourself constantly throughout your day. An Alexander Technique specialist will assist you to maintain the correct posture habitually in everything you do. There are other important daily lifetime pelvic exercises to adopt. Water - Sip at least 10 glasses of water a day. Ideally, two glasses of water should be sipped before breakfast and again before going to bed in the evening. The rest to be sipped throughout the day away from eating food. Toxic Exposures - Identify and remove toxic exposures in your lifestyle. There are many around us that we do not realise cause health problems in the longer term, which 'The Book' guides you through step by step. To start, introduce one change a day. For instance, change your personal hygiene products, i.e. change your toothpaste to one that is SLS free and free from other synthetic chemicals; change your shower gel and shampoo to natural products that do not contain synthetic chemicals; gradually go through all your products including cosmetics. Then begin changing your domestic cleaning products. Labels need to be carefully checked. EMFs - Learn to live safely around electrical equipment. To start, get into the habit of turning your mobile phone onto 'Airplane Mode' when you walk around with it in your pocket, check for messages periodically by turning it off Airplane Mode, hold the phone slightly away from your body whilst it searches for a signal. Remember, your long-term health is important, you are not indispensable! When you dial out to make a call, hold the phone away from your head until it has been answered and then hold it a couple of inches from your ear whilst talking. Keep calls as short as possible and try to get into the habit of using a landline. When you text, get into the habit of turning onto 'AM' whilst you compose the text and then turn 'AM' off to send the text, holding the mobile away from your body whilst it is searching and has a signal. Turn your mobile off or onto Airplane Mode at night or do not bring it into your bedroom whilst sleeping. Adopt safe ways to work with computers and any other electrical equipment. This is so important. Salt - Have a full-body Salt Scrub at least once a week, if not daily, especially if you have been working on a computer all day or have been driving/travelling all day. This will remove harmful positive ions that build up on your skin, dead skin cells, stimulate your lymph, and moisturise your skin. SPARCEL.CO.UK prepares natural organic low cost products for you to subscribe to, that you can use in the comfort of your own home. Mind - When you feel yourself reacting to any situation,

whether it be feeling stressed, angry or upset, get into the habit of taking quiet deep breaths and walking away from a situation, for example, say: "Can I come back to you on this please". When you are in your own company ask yourself why you are responding in the way that you are with your emotions. It will be your belief/judgment of a situation that will raise your emotional levels. With disciplined practice you will start to observe situations from a different perspective, so that your emotions do not overwhelm you. This will reduce your stressful reaction. There are many more tips to learn on this and it requires discipline to change old habits that do not serve you well. Over the Counter - Conventional medicine such as headache tablets, hay fever tablets, indigestion tablets etc upset the body's natural chemical balancing act which eventually leads to more serious conditions. For these and many other common symptoms, although you may not realise or feel it, you are likely to be dehydrated at the level of the cells of the body. Start to drink more water; it is highly likely that this is all your body needs. Additionally, to help alleviate conditions get into the habit of researching for alternative remedies, herbal, homeopathy. Your main concern is to rehydrate your body. There are important things to consider when increasing your water intake, which are detailed further in 'THE BOOK'. You will also need to look at your diet and establish which foods can help your condition and which ones you need to avoid. Foods are your medicine. Detoxification Practices - It is important to introduce quick and simple daily practices, such as skin brushing with a soft bristle brush before you turn on your shower and, after washing with natural products, have a contrast shower, as both will stimulate your lymph flow. Natural products are an essential part of your daily/weekly detoxification routine. Detoxification is essential but needs to be introduced and stepped-up gradually to prevent severe 'Healing Crisis' symptoms. There are many different options and combinations outlined in 'THE BOOK'. You should not wait to go to a spa once or twice a year - you need to take more frequent steps to look after yourself at home as well as at the spas. Diet - Reduce your carbohydrate and protein intake and increase consumption of organic fruit and vegetables. Do not eat carbohydrates and proteins together in the same meal. Do not use table salt, change to natural rock or sea salt. Eleven is a lucky number, so here is one more for luck....... Sun - The sun is so important for your health. We need to learn how to use the sun to its full potential to benefit our health as it is an essential part of our health regime. We must be more opportunistic for the sun: 9 to 5 is a thing of the past!

‘Tap’ Yourself Thi Learning to

A

s memories of summer holidays have long since faded with the tan and the approach of Christmas is undeniable as shops fill with cards, baubles and sparkly dresses, we may enjoy slouching in leggings and baggy jumpers, which can hide many unshed pounds, but often it’s about now when we start to think about getting into shape for the almost endless round of festive parties. Whether it is the annual office bash, the family get together or a few nights out clubbing with mates, they can often be enjoyed much more when we feel good about the way we look and can fit into that lovely dress we

n

bought just for the occasion. It’s much the same for men too, everyone feels more confident when they are happy with the way they look. Losing weight is not rocket science, but that doesn’t mean it is easy. We all know the principles of losing weight, we simply need to burn up more calories, or energy, than we take in. It sounds so easy yet an awful lot of people find it incredibly hard. Information about healthy eating and the importance of exercise positively bombards us, yet as a nation we keep on getting bigger. 36

Affinity master Oct 2013 7_Layout 1 copy 19/09/2013 08:17 Page 35

Information on the NHS website (relating to 2011 statistics) shows that only 34% of men and 39% of women had a healthy body mass index and there has been a marked increase in obesity rates over the last eight years with 24% of men and 26% of women being obese (compared with 13% and 16% in 1993) http://www.nhs.uk/news/2013/02February /Pages/Latest-obesity-stats-for-England-arealarming-reading.aspx

Body Image Our emotional wellbeing is also tied up with how we see ourselves and while many people would feel better about themselves if they were a bit thinner, when they embark on any attempt to lose weight they fail, then comfort themselves with food. Many people don’t have a completely accurate view of themselves and see themselves as fatter than they really are, but all the same many people actually don’t feel great about their shape but don’t know what to do about it. Hidden Scripts We are motivated to behave in certain ways because part of our unconscious is telling us to behave in that way. It is important to recognise that these drivers and motivators may be subconscious – but they are the reason why we reach for the biscuits when we were determined that this week we were definitely going to start the diet. Clearly part of you wants to lose weight, it may be a few pounds or several stones, but part of you is resisting and wants to keep eating. Discovering why, what the motivations are and the emotional reasons behind these, can free you to lose weight.

We are probably all aware as well that being overweight can have serious consequences for our health and wellbeing. Yet still many people find it hard to control their eating and exercise and therefore struggle to control their weight. There a number of reasons for this but one of the most simple is that while diet plans may deal effectively with the knowledge of what we should be eating, some schemes now even send meals to your door, and while personal trainers can provide you with a carefully worked out exercise regime and can even coach you through it, there are social and emotional elements to our eating and exercise habits that can only be dealt with by addressing our internal drivers and motivations.

Tapping By tapping on certain acupressure points with your own fingers, while making certain verbal affirmations you can reveal those hidden drivers and free yourself of the blocks you have to losing weight. Sometimes the blocks come about because of negative energy caused by distress and trauma, sometimes it may be because we have associated food with particular feelings, events or even relationships. Tapping can help you deal with all of these and with any negative attitudes about your own body image, exercise, or social situations related to food and enable you to be free to be the size and shape you want to be. If you have size 7 feet I’m afraid that is unlikely to change but losing weight is something everyone can achieve with the right help and support.

Social Drivers People often say that if they didn’t have social engagements losing weight would be a lot easier. Certainly it is hard to be at a friends for dinner, or in a restaurant and stick to a diet, but that is why it is essential to know your inner motivations and deal with those if you want to learn to effectively manage your weight. We can tell ourselves lots of lies about why we eat; the host would have been offended, the food would be wasted, everyone else was eating, I would have looked odd – all those things may be true but that is not why we eat. Emotional Drivers Food is so much more than the energy we take in to keep ourselves alive. It tastes nice, it looks nice, it is usually a pleasure and is associated with family life, friendship and celebrations. It can also be a source of comfort and nurture, many films show the jilted female tucking into cookie dough ice cream to soothe her newly broken heart. Food may be one of the ways we deal with stress; that chocolate biscuit with coffee during a stressful morning at work, a drink or crisps when the children are finally asleep, or a trip to the pub to enjoy a few pints with colleagues after work.

A programme for life Diets can often be effective in helping people lose weight but many people find that as soon as they stop the diet they put the weight back on, the reason is simple they may, through sheer force of effort, have stuck to a diet but they still haven’t learned to manage the emotional drivers that make them eat in particular ways which leads to weight gain. Dealing with those is essential and with tapping it is achievable.

I

t was our Wedding Anniversary and we were off to review The Embankment, a fabulous imposing mock-Tudor pub with luxury rooms so if you want you can turn your visit into an overnight stay or even a mini break. Set in the heart of Bedford, with wonderful views out over the River Great Ouse, the boathouses and all the hustle and bustle of life on the river, the setting is just perfect. As soon as you walk into The Embankment the atmosphere is relaxed and hospitable. Staff are warm and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. We decided to be shown straight to our table and have a drink there instead of in the bar area, and as soon as Jonathan, the manager, found out it was our anniversary we were treated to a glass of champagne – it’s these little personal touches that make people return time after time to the Embankment. As well as the comprehensive menu that leaves you spoilt for choice, there is a daily specials board making the decision of what to have even more difficult. My choice of starter was wild mushroom fricassee on toast, with poached hens egg; the flavours and texture of this were perfect. My husband chose the Bedfordshire wood pigeon Kiev from the specials board, the strong flavours of the pigeon accompanied with the garlic butter was a real treat Main courses were pan fried bream, crab coquettes, scallops, courgettes, watercress and tomato dressing, the presentation was flawless, the fish meaty and the crab croquettes were divine. Free-range duck breast, sweet potato cake and spinach with raspberry jus was my husbands choice; the duck was cooked exactly how he had requested, all the ingredients mixed together created an array of textures and flavours that had the taste buds working overtime. Did we have room for dessert? Silly question, of course we did! Strawberry and lime cheesecake for me, the light refreshing flavours of the strawberry and lime created a mouth-watering delight. Apple and blueberry crumble with caramel salted ice cream, another choice from the specials board, for David; the combination of blueberries and apple with the slightly salted caramel certainly didn’t disappoint. The Embankment is somewhere that delivers on all levels, with absolutely flavoursome food, warm helpful staff and a relaxed atmosphere that will have you returning time and again. Affinity gardening October Jobs... - Clear up fallen autumn leaves regularly - Cut back perennials that have died down - Divide herbaceous perennials and rhubarb crowns

Flower of the Month Argyranthemum Frutescens 'Meteor Red'

- Move tender plants, including aquatic ones, into the greenhouse

October is probably best known as the month that hosts Halloween every year. It’s also a month when you can see some amazing autumn flowers, particularly those in gold, brown and orange.

- Plant out spring cabbages

Royal red with hints of rose best describe the petals of the Meteor Red Marguerite. The flowers' central eyes are a fuzzy gold or orange, surrounded by a single but concentric ring of wide, flat red petals with white bases. It can withstand temperatures down to 0 degrees C and likes well drained, dry, poor to moderately fertile soil

- Harvest apples, pears, grapes and nuts - Prune climbing roses - Last chance to mow lawns and trim hedges in mild areas - Renovate old lawns or create new grass areas by laying turf

Regular light pruning will promote compact growth, increase flowering and provide cuttings for propagation. Plants are wind and salt tolerant, so they are ideal for seaside gardens, containers and sunny garden beds.

Fry’s

I

t is always interesting to hear managers today talk about their influences and who they learned techniques from. I was very fortunate. I spent four years at Manchester United in the early ‘60s under the great Sir Matt Busby. Matt always wanted his players to express themselves and he also felt he had the best players, so therefore he had the best team and they would always win. It stuck with me, so I went into management with a brash approach. I wanted my teams to entertain and in that high-scoring first season when I was manager at Dunstable I remember a game when we were 3-0 down at half-time and won 5-3. It was the same thing at Barnet and Southend, we kept on attacking and it was great to be involved in. Obviously the higher you go in the football pyramid, the more talented the opposition becomes and it is not as easy as it sounds.

www.theposh.com It was when I joined Peterborough United in 1996 that the real challenges began, though. The club was set to go into administration during the period while I was manager, and I just couldn’t allow that to happen. I felt there were a lot of people out there who had been patient, loyal and understanding and I didn’t want those people to lose out and get 5p or 10p in the pound back on their investment. That is why I took the club over.

There have been many examples down the years of player-managers being successful, including Glenn Hoddle at Swindon Town, Ruud Gullit at Chelsea and of course, Kenny Dalglish at Liverpool, but the role of the manager has changed dramatically since my Dunstable Town days.

Looking back, it nearly killed me. As a manager you only have the responsibility of picking the team. Now, don’t get me wrong, that is a big responsibility. All players have problems, and I don’t think enough is done about them. Players suffer with gambling, drugs, drink, you name it, and I have always said to my players “come to me”, because if I could help, I would.

The media requirements alone can take up so much of your time. You are always in demand and the dealings with players and the agents are time consuming and very upsetting sometimes. Nowadays, there are management teams in place to assist the manager, but they are needed with the demands of modern football. You have to adapt, you have to change with the times.

I have done a lot of things for my players during the years and they may not have appreciated it at the time, but they often contact me years later to say how thankful they were. At Peterborough United, I have been secretary, manager, chairman, Director of Football, owner – I have done every role bar the tea lady…………………………………… ….and next month I’ll tell you what it’s really like to own a Football Club!

In my day as a player and then in my early years of management, the squad used to eat steak, egg and chips as their pre-match meal and have a brown ale to swig it down with – it doesn’t bear thinking about now! In my time in football, I have fulfilled pretty much every role there is to fulfil at a football club. 64

BLUE IS THE COLOUR

Maserati celebrates its partnership with the Venice Film Festival with a star studded “Blue Carpet Night”

V

Bowers & Wilkins, the British manufacturer of high-end audio components, shares with Maserati a total commitment to engineering excellence and technological innovation. From the collaboration with Maserati, new ideas and products were created, including the exceptional premium surround system of the new Maserati Quattroporte.

enice, 4th September 2013 - The Maserati Terrace at the Hotel Excelsior shone in blue as the Trident Marque hosted an exclusive event during the 70th Venice Film Festival.

The "Blue Carpet Night", dedicated to Maserati's colour, paid tribute to the four brands which share the same values of craftsmanship and exclusivity and with which Maserati has established long lasting partnerships.

Riva, part of Ferretti Group, is linked to Maserati by the same passion, excellence and Made in Italy craftsmanship. It showcased Iseo, a 27ft runabout that took pride of place, just for the “Blue Carpet Night”, in the swimming pool of The Maserati Terrace. Riva is one of the leading players worldwide in engineering, production and commercialisation of motor yachts.

The party, in collaboration with La Martina, Bowers & Wilkins, Riva and Dr Vranjes Firenze, took place just after the premiere of Jonathan Glazer’s ‘Under the Skin’ featuring the stunning Scarlett Johansson, it saw the participation of international celebrities and selected guests, including actress Scarlett Johansson, top model and TV presenter Jodie Kidd, sailing legend and skipper of the Maserati VOR70 Giovanni Soldini, actors Vanessa Hessler and Nicolas Vaporidis and Miss Italy 2009 Maria Perrusi who hosted the night.

Dr. Vranjes Firenze, an elegant maison of interior fragrances, dressed in blue its latest perfumes: a touch of creativity from Dr. Paolo Vranjes in Maserati's honour. Special guest of the night, a perfect complement to the music and unique Venetian atmosphere, was renowned sand artist Silvia Emme, whose live performance was a real tribute to all the brands involved.

La Martina, Maserati's partner in the polo world, showcased six iconic polo shirts, including the one dedicated to Guards Polo Club, the most exclusive in the world. 66

Welcome to the musings of Yummy Mummy. Living in Bedford she is married to ‘The Husband’ and together they have 4 children, Rafferty 8, Violet 6, Roman 5 and baby Clementine 1

All my views are my own and are not intended to offend anyone but alas I may frustrate you as I certainly do myself and no doubt those around me at times. I would love to hear from you, your views, questions or indeed just to share your experiences of trying to be a Yummy Mummy. Email me at info@affinitymag.co.uk

Happy Birthday to Me!

T

hat time of year was approaching again – my birthday! I’m not bothered about getting another year older as what is the point of stressing about something you cannot change? I try to live in the present so don’t hanker over the past or worry about the future! It doesn’t mean I don’t reminisce sometimes though – usually after a couple of glasses of wine!

You could book weekend tickets however that would involve camping and I have to ask the question ‘Why do people camp’?! I am not a diva but I do prefer a bed and running water (out of a tap and not the sky)! One day when the children ask we will give camping a try ...maybe! As Chipping Norton is only an hour and a half away it suited us to go for the day and if it did rain then we could just chuck in the wellies and raincoats....and go home to a nice warm bath! As it turned out the weather was lovely, dry but not too hot – perfect!

As The Husband will confirm, I am the world’s worse person to buy for. It’s not that I am fussy but I like to think I have very few needs so I don’t actually want lots of stuff anymore! I could get all whimsical and say that I all need is love and my family and friends, but wine helps too! Plus The Husband hasn’t always been the best buyer of gifts in the past, don’t get me wrong he isn’t a complete disaster but many years ago when we first got together the gift of a Playstation wasn’t my favourite!!

We arrived through the ‘Little Dudes Den’ with a Big Top of activities and a vintage funfair – the children wanted to do everything straight away and it took some convincing that we had all day! The main stage opened at noon with CBeebies Justin which went down a treat with the youngest however the older children were way too cool to join in with ‘If You’re Happy and You Know It’! They were more into the bands that followed (Mark Owen did a set but I must admit that whilst I know alot of Take That, his solo career must have passed me by!)

Thankfully he has never ventured into buying clothes or underwear for me although it would be quite amusing to see him panicking in a lingerie section. I’m not sure if he would be getting all flustered with trying to get me the correct gift or at all the sexy undies on show!

The rest of the festival was food based – something The Husband and I definitely agree on it that we both love food! We tried all sorts of food from homemade scotch eggs (delicious, I will never buy a processed shop bought one again), brownies, chilli oil, popcorn and pate. Thankfully not all at the same time! We missed out on the cookery demonstrations but next year the first thing we will do is go and get booked up as by the time we realised about them, they were full.

These days I prefer to receive an ‘experience’ however the children do like to give me little presents to unwrap – well they open them for me! I am more than pleased with the usual haul of hand, body & foot cream, bubble bath, chocolates (nobody diets on their birthday so I eat the whole box in one day!) and of course alcohol! This year I decided on my ‘main’ present before the big day so The Husband bought us tickets for The Big Festival – a family friendly festival near Chipping Norton organised by Jamie Oliver and Alex James (it’s on his farm) – well I am sure they have a professional team behind them but it’s billed at their festival! I have never been a festival go-er (I don’t do camping!) but I do like going to gigs so this seemed ideal.

We were all knackered at the end of the day but we loved it and will be booking up for next year! This was a brilliant birthday present and something I can’t shove to get dusty at the back of a drawer!

Magical Raithwaite Retreat N

estled in a green valley beside the beautiful North Yorkshire coast is The Raithwaite Estate, a new hotel development with contemporary styling and clean lines. The expansive country retreat is set within 100 acres of breathtaking countryside and sweeping gardens, and was a lovely surprising stones throw from the beach.

We had a gorgeous bedroom that had its’ own courtyard complete with furniture where, after a lovely walk on the beach, we sat drinking champagne. Pure indulgence.

Originally a 19th century country haven belonging to a shipping magnate, it has now been sensitively transformed establishing the property as one of the finest luxury country retreats in the North of England.

Then there is the stunning six bedroom Lakehouse, perched prettily on the shore of Raithwaite Lake. It is perfect for groups of friends and families who wish to indulge and relax in the privacy of their own luxurious holiday home. Recently refurbished and styled to a high standard, the house features modern-country style dĂŠcor. The lounge area is open-plan, light and airy with wooden floors, vaulted beams and tasteful seating. The large farmhouse style kitchen features French doors leading onto the patio and garden, and is fully equipped with modern appliances including a four oven classic Aga. A personal chef service is available for private dining.

Upon entering, the lobby area is paved with flagstones leading up to a handsome marble topped reception desk. Above the reception desk is the majestic Raithwaite crest depicting hunting and fishing scenes. Staff were warm and friendly and upon arrival we were given a tour of the hotel which exudes an air of traditional English elegance. The 73 guestrooms are large and furnished with rich pile carpets and high-spec Sealy beds. The colour scheme is elegantly soothing, with shades of soft taupe, cream and beige offset by dramatic dark wooden furniture and injections of colour in the soft furnishings. Handpicked oil paintings and cream leather armchairs embellished with heavy silver studs add an opulent air. Guestrooms are equipped with a generous offering of locally sourced Yorkshire tea and biscuits, best enjoyed whilst taking in the spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. The bathrooms have a calming colour scheme, with heated flooring and double ended baths adding to the luxurious experience.

The Raithwaite Estate also has nine stunning suites all of which are extremely spacious and offer spectacular views of the surrounding Estate.

Before dinner we sampled the delights of the spa which boasts a relaxation lounge, heated pool, steam room, sauna, Jacuzzi and fitness suite, as well as four treatment rooms. Designed to harness the peaceful setting of the hotel, the spa offers treatments for health beauty and relaxation. Dinner was served in The Brace Restaurant which is spacious and elegant. The restaurant prides itself on using the finest local produce whether it be locally churned cheeses, home-reared meats, the best Whitby fish,

vegetables from surrounding farms, or jams and preserves from small-scale artisan producer and it showed; the food was delicious and varied with dishes to suit all tastes. Service was impeccable and the atmosphere was just perfect. After dinner we headed into Poachers Bar where we enjoyed the timeless elegant surroundings whilst relaxing with an after dinner drink. The end to a perfect day in an equally perfect location. After the luxury of a wonderful nights sleep, we headed down for breakfast, which again was of the high standards we had grown accoustomed to at The Raithwaite Estate. All too soon our stay came to an end, so after a final walk on the glorious beach and around the grounds of this fabulous estate, we packed our bags promising to return – next time for longer! Prices start from £129 for a standard room, and £499 for The Penthouse, inclusive of breakfast and VAT.

75 Years On‌‌

Kindertransport I n Germany, in 1939, as the clouds of war thicken, a desperate mother forces her nine year old daughter Eva onto a train, sending her out of danger and into the arms of strangers.

In England, decades later, a reluctant mother prepares for the departure of her grown-up daughter Faith, as she cuts the ties of childhood. Then a chance discovery opens an unhealed wound and a long-buried secret is revealed. The bittersweet experience of every parent as they try to teach their child to survive alone, unites these women across the decades. In the nine months before the outbreak of World War II, the Kindertransport ferried nearly 10,000, mainly Jewish children from Germany and Austria, to safety. Many would never see their parents again. In the year that marks the 75th anniversary of the Kindertransport, this is a timely and un-missable story of love and loss, past and present and hope for the future. This is a heart wrenching emotional tale of the pain and passion of mother /daughter relationships

While the survival rate is much higher than it used to be, it still hits people hard, and many of those people don’t have a support network of their own. Enter Macmillan They do sterling work to support the victims of this horrible and unpredictable disease, and we hear nothing but good about the work that they do. So we are delighted to be involved in the annual Macmillan Coffee Morning fund-raising project. The idea is that people gather together, have tea or coffee, and get

involved in some activity to raise money for the charity. It’s done very well for Macmillan. Last year they raised £15 million from the event. This year it is on Friday, September 27. Since O For Coffee is now open (the front part of Tudor Rose Patchwork), we have decided that we will hold a Macmillan Coffee Morning this year. We will be selling pin cushions (and raffling one as well) and we’ll also be auctioning a large quilt. It’ll be a silent auction. The morning should be fun – feel free to come along and join in!

We are here with a more casual and fun approach to networking Join us on the first Thursday of each month 12.30pm – 2.00pm 7th November for drinks and a delicious buffet lunch October’s venue:
