Welcome...

1 I’m loving... 2

3 Summer is coming to an end, the nights are drawing in and we’re starting to put our bikinis away and looking to our Autumn wardrobe; we take a look at some of the fashion trends to hit the high street for this new season (page 33). In the next month or so the TV will be full of Christmas advertising to tempt your children, who will then, of course, write a list to Santa that is as long as a piece of string!!! If you want to give them a real treat and become engulfed in the magic of Christmas then a trip to Lapland is a must (there are no words that can describe your child’s face when they come face to face with the real ‘Santa’). We bring you our amazing review (page 75) from last year when I took my granddaughter to meet the man himself - a truly magical experience, certainly something unforgettable that dreams are made of! Autumn also sees the release of lots of new shows at Milton Keynes Theatre, and are we in for a treat, including ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’, ‘Sister Act’ and Cats’ (page 68) - all culminating in, yes we are back on that ‘C’ word (Christmas) Panto and Dick Whittington featuring Samantha Womak and a host of other stars.

Let’s Try Reiki Lying on the treatment couch fully clothed, with a blanket draped over me (Reiki is one of the few treatment that doesn’t require you to undress), Jo began - the heat from her hands (this is the energy transferring), gentle touch, and soft music in the background had me feeling an extreme sense of calm. Her hands went over my body from head to toe concentrating on some areas longer than others, I was in a complete semi-sleep like trance, that had me feel like I was floating. Afterwards Jo told me that I had quite a balanced body and mind, something she didn’t expect with the job that I do - she did pick up on an issue with my chest, which I was amazed at as I do have a problem with my lungs (something not many people are aware of). The treatment was truly amazing and left me feeling as if I didn’t have a care in the world, I felt lighter and brighter and any worries I’d had, had completely disappeared leaving me feeling calm, energised and relaxed.

There are not many treatments in one form or another that I haven’t been lucky enough to experience, so it may surprise you to learn that there is one that has managed to escape me - Reiki. An alternative healing treatment, which helps calm the mind and emotions, promoting healing for both body and spirit. A gentle hands-on healing that works on a higher vibration, re-balancing your energy, which is something we all need in our lives at one point or another. It sounded wonderful and just the type of treatment that I needed with such a busy lifestyle. I paid a visit to Holistic Healing by Jo at her treatment room in Ampthill (she also offers treatments from a salon in Kempston), a tranquil room within Vanity Beauty, offering serenity and calm before you have even slipped on the couch. The philosophy of Reiki is that we are all surrounded by a vast pool of cosmic energy, which, although invisible, can be summoned and directed by a trained healer and funnelled into the body through entry points called chakras. The “massage” consists of placing the hands lightly on the chakras, or simply holding them over the body to guide the energy in, with the purpose being to relieve stress and pain, induce relaxation, release emotional blockages, accelerate natural healing and balance subtle bodies.

If you’ve never experience Reiki before– I urge you to try it at least once, I guarantee you’ll be taken aback with how it makes you feel and you’ll find yourself returning on a regular basis just as I plan to do!

Midlife Madness Fear of Flying - Well Almost! As someone who loves holidays my heart really does go out to those who fear flying. While I have never witnessed a full blown, take off panic attack I have seen several white knuckle grips on adjacent passengers - who knows if they are known to be afflicted or not and, of course, I have noted that there are indeed courses for those who suffer in such ways. although the idea of paying to be put in a position that makes me scared witless seems strangely admirable. Generally I’m either an extreme optimist - although my limited understanding of the statistics tells me that crossing a road can be a far riskier business - or I am convinced of my own invincibility - it’ll never happen to me but generally I regard flying as fairly safe. But even so I am not immune to the news and the changing times we live in where, sadly, wars, terrorist attacks, coups and nasty viruses make it into the headlines on what feels like increasing regularity.

means delays on the approach to the airport. I remember the days when you would arrive at the airport with one desk for your flight - and your flight only - not check-in, luggage drop off points for multiple flights, which again seems to result in enormous queues. It doesn’t seem so long ago that there was time for a leisurely meal and a sneaky bit of duty free shopping before you boarded, but my last few flights have left me panting breathlessly as I take my seat on the plane, having spent every available minute in one queue or another, so that the last bit is a gallop and, of course, there has been no chance to grab a magazine, book, an unnecessary but very nice little something from accessorize (in the sale of course) or even a new lipstick from duty free! But even that mayhem is not really what I fear - if I am honest it is the other passengers. I’m sure you will have a met a few them. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes but they are all equally irritating. The smelly plane picnickers with their egg sandwiches and fish salads, those who fall fast asleep while still on the runway and then snore and snort loudly, there are those who talk just a bit too loudly all the time - and never fall asleep - while they regale nearby passengers with tales from their latest holiday, near death experience, fabulous job or whatever - just don’t do it so loudly!! Then there are those who find it impossible to follow any instruction and jump out of their seats when clearly it’s just the crew who have been released for duties, I know this because they have just told us but somehow it didn’t apply to them! You may also have come across the utter know-it-all who will start telling you or some other passenger all about the features of the specific plane or even details of the flight path. But the one I am probably most afraid of, even worse than unruly children or groups of slightly inebriated youths, is the passenger with headphones who sings along! Even short flights can feel like a long haul then.

But generally I don’t dwell on such things and my fears around flying are much more mundane. I do get, honestly, why we need increased security, what I don’t get is that when the airport knows the timetable what sense is there in having such lengthy queues at security - they know presumably how many passengers there will be and each and everyone has to take off jackets, often shoes as well, get liquids into plastics bags and get out all electronic devices and then reassemble themselves! So why have a situation where loads of folk end up running for their plane? On our most recent flight we got though security to see FINAL CALL for our flight and as we approached the aircraft, having been told to board via the rear staircase, found the staircase being removed thankfully we made it to plane by the front door just before they closed it - phew! I know that airports need expansion but every airport I have flown from this year seems to be having extensive construction work, which almost always 20

Reflect

Learning to

While reflecting is something we all do at times it would probably help us all if we could learn to do it with greater frequency and more depth. Not many of us, either male or female would consider ourselves ready to leave the house without a check in the mirror, but we also probably all know some people who insist on checking their appearance not just several times in a day but every time they pass a vaguely reflective surface. Why do we do it? Well usually we want to check that we look the way we want to, and looking in a mirror may cause to put on more lipstick, straighten a tie, comb our hair, select an alternative piece of jewellery or a different jacket or even go completely back to the drawing board and change our whole outfit. The process of considering ourselves in the reflection of a mirror is an important part of our finished product, we take some

action, getting dressed, or styling our hair and the reflecting process - in this case looking at ourselves in the mirror- allows us see if we got the results we intended. But the type of reflecting I want to consider is not to do with appearance, but rather other aspects of our lives. Remember one of the reasons we use a mirror is to check we got the desired results, well the same is the case with other types of reflecting - are we heading where we want to go, living the life we planned, feeling the way we want to about ourselves and our relationships or is life just drifting by? The process of reflecting can help us take stock and if necessary change direction.

26

When is a good time for reflection? The straightforward answer is any time and all the time. In many ways the more we do it the better, while stopping short of obsession. There are however some key times for

sept2016.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 25/08/2016 12:36 Page 25

way that seeing our reflection in a mirror, may make us make a few changes, so too can answering the question. Of course we may not reveal the answer to whoever asked the question but often being asked the question causes us briefly to reflect and consider how things are. The job may be good but the hours too long, or the house may be further from friends than you’d considered, or the course not as interesting as you’d hoped. While it may happen quickly, the process is important in determining yourself how you feel about these changes. If everything is perfect or at least pretty darned good then that’s great but if not, then probably that is a signal that a little more reflection is needed. Could anything be done about the hours, will the course get more interesting as it goes along? In essence are the drawbacks things you can live with and make work or is there some action you need to take if you are not to let frustrations build up. Sadly another time for reflection is when things have gone wrong, for example when there is a break up (was it my fault?) or if you don’t get a job you wanted (what was wrong with CV, or was it my interview technique). But in addition to particular times when reflection is almost thrust upon us, the practice of reflection is something that can be built into everyday life and many people who do so say they live happier and more fulfilled lives.

How to be more reflective As with so many things in life reflection takes time. But it is time well spent. People do this in all sorts of ways, some will have a period each day when they can be alone with their thoughts, and use mindfulness or meditation to free themselves of some of the mental busyness and clutter that can so easily prevent any reflection. Others will build in a weekly slot or even take themselves off for a day on a monthly or periodic basis. Essentially all you need is yourself, some peace and quiet, that’s not to say you can’t be reflective on a rush hour train, but to begin with peace and quiet will make the process a little easier and perhaps a paper and pen or tablet to make notes. Think back to the example of the mirror - sometimes you will look in it and think to yourself that you got it right - you look just how you wanted to and no further action is needed except perhaps to make a note to wear that outfit again! But at other times reflection will mean that changes are indeed necessary, maybe your hope that the relationship would improve isn’t being realised, maybe the promotion you were promised really doesn’t look like it’s ever going to happen. In those cases some changes may be needed and allowing time for the process of reflection will often mean it is easier to decide on what course of action you need to take to ensure your own happiness and fulfilment.

reflection, times like birthdays or anniversaries are a good time to think back over the last year, or decade and in many ways the resolutions people make at New Year will often follow some reflection, I don’t like my size/shape so I’ll diet, or I’ll exercise more. But such times can also be times for a deeper sort of reflection - am I happy with my job, relationship, am I where I thought I would be at this stage in my life - if not, am I happy with where I find myself or do I really need to make some adjustments in order not to feel regret further down the line. Another key time for reflection, and one that others help us with, is following significant changes. A new house, a new job, a new relationship, becoming a parent, starting a course or setting up your own business. At such times friends and family will often ask ‘How’s the new job, house, course?’ or whatever it happens to be. In the same

Spice Up Your Life When it comes to spicy foods I have to admit I don’t indulge, My palette is far too delicate, so when a walk along the picturesque Embankment in Bedford took us onto The High Street to The Spice Shop, a truly authentic Indian restaurant, I was a little worried at what I’d let myself in for.

Shown to our seats the whole ambience of this unique restaurant hit me. Poppadoms and chutneys in front of us we contemplated the choices on the menu, of which there were many that had our mouth’s watering! I decided to stick with what I knew and opted for Classic Tandoori Chicken, this delicious dish is marinated overnight in a selection of spices, garlic and yoghurt then grilled to perfection and served with a fresh salad, which is just perfect for cooling down the slight kick that lingers in your mouth. The marinade had seeped all the way into the succulent chicken leaving it full of flavour, a real treat on my tastebuds. Hubby loves seafood so when he saw the Kolkata Calamari there was no other choice for him – tiny tender squid and tails in a grainy crumb crunch, quick fried and tossed into a bowl with tamarind chutney drizzle – the calamari were soft and cooked perfectly, they literally melted in the mouth.

Walking through the door into The Spice Shop, the aroma of sweet spices hits you straight away, with its dark wood interior and shelves full of jars and bottles that are home to all the spices that are used to prepare the dishes. They have managed to create a smart, intimate, contemporary Indian restaurant. Each dish on the menu is started slowly from scratch and finished even slower, creating dishes the truly traditional way, taking you on a culinary journey to discover true Indian food.

46

sept2016.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 25/08/2016 12:40 Page 45

Main courses were just as tasty – I opted for the Duck Tikka, a duck breast steeped overnight in a marinade of sweet jaggery tangy tamarind and spices, which is then grilled on skewers in the Tandori and served with baked Pilau rice – this dish was delightful with roasted peppers, tomatoes and a small salad served in a poppadom cone – it looked far too good to eat but eat I did, although a little apprehensively at first in case the spice was overbearing but it was pure perfection, the duck was tender and flavoured without being overbearing, rice, fresh and fluffy. Hubby’s choice was Dark Duck Curry – a leg of duck cooked with dark spices and chana daal (a robust lentil), I have never seen this on any Indian menu before so it was going to be something truly different – spice wise this is definitely not for the faint hearted, a real authentic dish that hubbie loved – definitely one for the food connoisseurs who want to experience something completely different. The menu has a varied selection of dishes to suit everyone and staff will happily accommodate any special requests from fussy people like me – Not too spicy (really) – we are in an Indian Restaurant!!!! Everything in The Spice Shop is just that little bit different, creating an ambience that leaves you feeling that you may well have experienced just a tiny bit of real India. Staff are warm and welcoming and service is impeccable and of course food is delicious, different and will certainly not disappoint. The Spice Shop 19 High Street, Bedford 01234 348924

Time to Dine We all know food changes with the seasons, and restaurant menus are no different – The Barns Hotel in Bedford, set on the banks of the River Ouse in a beautiful, tranquil location are just about to release their new Autumn menu and are you in for a treat!

was light and full of flavour – Lamb Carpaccio thinly sliced with baby carrots, leeks and turnips topped with pea shoots and drizzled with salsa verde - the softness of the meat mixed with the crunchy vegetables were a perfect pairing.

The chef has managed to produce an array of mouthwatering starters, the most delicious mains and the sweetest desserts, that not only taste divine are also presented like a work of art.

Mains were an amazing mix of colours, flavours and textures and included seared monkfish rolled in saffron, with a tomato and garlic broth, buttered savoy cabbage, and roasted garlic basil scented basmati rice, accompanied with a glass of Amala Chardonnay, the fruity flavours of this wine were a real treat on the palette and enhanced the flavours of the monkfish superbly. The monkfish was baked to perfection, almost melting in the mouth; the tomato broth gave a nice tang to a delightful dish. A 28 day aged fillet with pommier mustard mash,

We were lucky enough to have a sneak preview and tasting of some of the dishes starting with Oak Smoked Salmon with marinated fennel and a caper salad, the strong flavours of the fennel complimented the delicate flavours of the fresh salmon perfectly creating a dish that 54

Portobello mushroom, buttered green vegetables and red wine jus was another main appearing on the new menu – the steak was so tender and fresh and was accompanied by a glass of ‘Cruel Mistress’ (we love the name), a Pinot Noir that was silky and smooth on the palette. This new menu is not only offering guests the chance to savour some delicious foods, it is also placing a lot of emphasis on being pleasing to the eye, with different coloured and shaped plates being used to create an abundance of colour and style whilst guests are dining. Desserts are just as aesthetically pleasing and delicious with an Eton Mess with mixed berries, strawberry curd yoghurt, lemon curd yoghurt, whipped cream, shortbread biscuit and a raspberry and elderflower sorbet – the sourness of the berries mixed with the sweetness of the yoghurt was delicious and the flavour of the elderflower was strong and evident in every mouthful. An orange and chocolate bread and butter pudding with an apple and brandy custard, baby apples and a raspberry coulis, this is a perfect dish to make the transition from a Summer to Autumn menu, with strong chocolate and orange flavours, mixed with delicate apple and brandy make the different textures and tastes on your palette enticing and distinctive. This new menu looks like being a real hit with dishes to suit everyone’s palette, staff who are attentive and a setting that is idyllic – isn’t it time you paid a visit to The Barns to see what tempts your palette. Cause a Scandal Bored of the usual afternoon tea? Then you need to check out ‘Scandal Water’ at the London EDITION Hotel, still as indulgent but just that little bit different. “Scandal Water” was the 19th Century slang for tea and became the thing to do amongst the upper echelons of London Society, for whom work was unthinkable and consequently boredom was a very real issue. The empty hours of the afternoon, between the memory of lunch and the anticipation of dinner, became the perfect time to revive the spirits with a cup of afternoon tea and engage in the real focus of the afternoon - a solid couple of hours of salacious gossip!

flower alongside The Edition Punch, with its sweet and fruity floral notes this was my favourite. The balance for three separate tastings for each dish was perfection with all the flavours having been carefully thought out and selected, allowing your tastebuds to experience an array of flavours and textures.

The menu consists of five teas that are carefully matched with five food pairings, and five tea-infused punches. You get to choose three pairings per person, so if there’s 2 of you, you can try all of them!

The London EDITION have created something unique, something that will have you feeling you have truly indulged without causing too much of a “Scandal!”

Tea is served in The “Punch Room” nestled at the back of the hotel, a fumed-oak paneled den inspired by the comfort of manor house libraries and nineteenth-century London's private clubs. Attention to detail is evident as soon as you enter with sterling silver punch bowls dotted around, beautiful crystal glasses and crockery so delicate you feel like you’re Royalty. The tea starts with the most delicious melt in the mouth, warm, fluffy, English muffin, which is said to be warmed to just the right temperature to compliment the teas you have chosen. Pairings began with the exquisite flavours of a Japanese Sencha Tea, served with dainty misto Glazed Salmon, sandwiched between crispy pastry and topped with caviar. English Milk Punch, silky smooth and full of strong flavours further enhanced the tastebuds. Closer to God Punch introduced unlikely ingredients with lemon sherbet and lime juice balancing the delightfully smoky Chichicapa mescal. Lincolnshire Poacher Cheese Shortbread with a Cream Cheese Topping had strong flavours and was paired with a delicate Chamomile tea.

Scandal Water is available every Friday and Saturday with seating’s between 3pm and 4pm at £35 for the choice of three pairings. www.editionhotels.com

authority on things at Eastlands. Joe Hart, England’s number one, has been frozen out of things because of his lack of ability at the ‘sweeper keeper’ role made so fashionable by Neuer at Bayern Munich.

The start to the Premier League season has been crazy. Who would have predicted that Hull City would beat the Champions Leicester City? Who expected Arsenal to concede four at the Emirates in their opening fixture? Trying to work out who is going to beat who is getting harder every year.

Hart is a top keeper and one of the best, if not the best, in this country, so it is disappointing to see that he won’t get his chance at City. I hope for his sake he goes to a club that uses his undoubted qualities.

The transfer window closed on the 31st August and at the time of writing, there have already been some incredible deals done, none more so than the £89 million signing of Paul Pogba by Manchester United. Of course, Pogba was a former United player and was sold for around £2 million less than this five years ago – just shows you how much money is in the game at the top level these days.

Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp will be an interesting watch. They have a lot of ability in the final third, but defensively could be an issue. For me personally, the best signing of the summer was done in the Championship.

Pogba joined Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Old Trafford and with Rooney, Martial and Mata, not to mention Marcus Rashford already on the books, I am sure United fans are excited about what lies in store under Jose Mourinho.

Newcastle opened their chequebook to sign a proven goal scorer in Dwight Gayle. We had Dwight for a short period of time at Peterborough United before Palace signed him for in excess of £7 million. His goal record in the Premier League was excellent when he played but for whatever reason, he wasn’t given a real run in the team.

Chelsea have made a solid start to life under Conte, but the key to their success will be the form of Eden Hazard. He was below par last term and there were rumours he was off to Real Madrid, but he has made a decent start to this season and he could be the catalyst to Chelsea getting back into the top four.

He will score 20 goals at least in the Championship if he stays fit. He has started the season in fine style and I would not be surprised if he is the leading goal scorer at the end of the campaign. The Toon Army have already made him a fans favourite and you can understand why.

Faster, Tauter, and Technology-Packed

The all-new R8 Audi Convertible Super Sports Car

D

developed multi-material Audi Space Frame (ASF) which incorporates an intelligent mix of aluminium and carbon fibre that helps to keep dry weight down to just 1,612kg. The inherent strength of the concept is evident in the fact that torsional rigidity has increased by over 50 per cent compared with the previous model, helped by Spyderspecific body reinforcements primarily in the sills, Apillars and windscreen frame.

evotees of the gloriously vocal ten-cylinder engine at the heart of the all-new Audi R8 will be able to revel in the roar even more completely by opting for the latest open-air R8 Spyder. Priced from £129,990 OTR, the new addition to the second generation R8 range can convert to sun-seeking mode in just 20 seconds, leaving occupants to enjoy the elements to the increasingly rare tune of a naturally aspirated V10 soundtrack. The basic format may be familiar, but the ground-up rework of the R8 Spyder brings it very much up to date not only by adding more power and a 50 per cent uplift in torsional rigidity, but also sophisticated new features including the fully digital Audi Virtual Cockpit, the Audi smartphone interface and internet-based Audi Connect services.

To propel this light yet impressively rigid shell as effectively and efficiently as possible, the latest naturally aspirated V10 works with a fast-acting seven-speed S tronic transmission and a newly designed quattro drive system using an electro-hydraulically activated multiplate clutch apportioning drive fully variably to either axle according to the situation. The upgraded power plant adds advanced features such as dual injection to optimise response and a freewheeling mode which enables it to ‘decouple’ whenever possible to improve fuel economy. 540PS of power and 540 Nm (398.3 lb-ft) of torque at 6,500 rpm deliver phenomenal road performance, with the 0 to 62mph sprint taking just 3.6 seconds on the way to a top speed of 197mph, but the latest R8 Spyder is also capable of returning up to 24.1mpg, corresponding to 277 grams CO2 per kilometre.

The key point of differentiation between Coupe and Spyder R8 models is of course the lightweight, fully automated cloth hood, which can be activated at speeds of up to 31mph and is slickly concealed beneath the sculpted integral cover, or reattached to shield occupants from a sharp shower, in just 20 seconds. The rear window, sunk into the bulkhead, can also be retracted and extended at the touch of a button. The strong backbone of the new R8 Spyder is the newly 70

driving with the hood down.

The Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system is standard, and offers four modes ranging from overtly dynamic to comfort-oriented. Even greater fintuning is available via the optional R8 performance leather steering wheel with its multifunction and satellite controls, one of which provides access to three more driving programs: dry, wet and snow. These match the car’s operating characteristics to the specific conditions of the road being travelled.

Virtually unlimited scope for personalization Over and above the extensive standard equipment, customers have almost unlimited scope to tailor both the interior and exterior to their individual preferences with features such as Gloss carbon exterior detailing, LED headlights with laser technology and a wealth of Audi exclusive upholstery and trim upgrades.

Another new highlight in the driver’s field of vision is the large 12.3-inch, fully digital Audi virtual cockpit, which presents all information using rich 3D graphics.

The new limited-edition special series will be available with a removable carbon-fibre hard top and a removable soft top. It has the same running gear and performance figures as the original LaFerrari, sporting a 800 cv V12 (with a specific power output of 128 cv/l) coupled with a 120 kW electric motor (163 cv), unleashing 963 cv in total.

The Audi smartphone interface, which made its debut in the Q7 and A4 model lines and has just become a standard feature of the A3, is also adopted by the second generation R8 Spyder. It enables selected content from compatible iOS and Android Smartphone’s to be displayed by the Audi virtual cockpit. The Audi phone box can also be specified to connect mobile phones to the car aerial and charge them inductively, and for audiophiles the optional Bang & Olufsen Sound System now also plays through two loudspeakers mounted in each seat’s headrest, for outstanding sound quality even when

Significant and extensive modifications have been made to the chassis with the aim of retaining the same torsional rigidity and beam stiffness as the coupé version. The car’s aerodynamics have also been further honed to guarantee the same drag coefficient when driving in the open configuration. 71

A Magical Festive Experience

Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh – well not quite, we were snuggled under real Reindeer skins being pulled deep into a snow covered forest looking for Santa! In between the crisp white landscape we spotted a wooden cabin all lit up, with smoke coming out of the chimney, could this be him? Slowly opening the wooden cabin door, there sitting in front of the roaring fire was the big man himself, looking exactly as he should, plump, white beard, glasses (it was like Santa had come alive from a Christmas Card!) “Hello Lilly-Mai” were his first words, as he reached into his pocket, pulled out and proceeded to read the letter she had ‘posted’ to him before we left England! (secretly brought along and handed to Santa’s little helpers before we met him!) My granddaughter is seldom lost for words but the whole experience of talking to Santa seemed to leave her speechless, with odd nods and shakes of the head being the only offering she could manage – only uttering “Thank You” when he reached into his pile of colorfully wrapped presents to give her one!

sept2016.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 25/08/2016 12:42 Page 74

This experience was truly unforgettable, but it isn’t only meeting Santa that’s magical on this 4-day trip to Finland, it’s everything else that’s included as well. Warm berry juice for children and Baileys or Vodka for a grown up treat were waiting in the ice bar for us, along with pancakes which we happily consumed whilst sitting on real ice block benches surrounded by ice sculptures, making for an amazing sight as we deliberated what to do next – there was so much on offer including a reindeer-drawn sleigh ride through the forest with playful elves popping up to throw the odd snow ball or two at you, a show from the elves in the Snow-Dome – a giant igloo where those elves were up to their tricks again! Husky dog sledding over deep snow, frozen lakes and through the snow glistening trees was another of those “once in a lifetime experiences” Followed by snow fishing, tobogganing, skidoo-riding and snow hockey, (if you still had the energy) all fuelled with lunch, tea and coffee whenever you felt the need to warm up (temperatures were as low as -11C), good job Santa’s Lapland made sure you were wrapped up warm as part of their package, they supply you with Arctic-proof snowsuits, thermal socks, boots and mittens, during the duration of your stay. A gala dinner back at one of the hotels finishes off your search for Santa Day with dancing, entertainment, fun and games – Oh, and of course Elves!

sept2016.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 25/08/2016 12:43 Page 75

Those elves even met us at the airport knocking children’s hats off, stealing their suitcases and even jumping on and off the luggage belt – you could be mistaken for thinking we were watching a Tom and Jerry cartoon, but no, this is where the festive fun begins when you book with Santa’s Lapland. They include so much in their magical breaks – including half board at one of their hotels in Saariselkä, 250km north of the Arctic Circle, with only two or three hours of actual daylight here it is actually eerily beautiful. Toboggans are dotted around the hotel and village with free use of them whenever you want, whether it’s to fly down the slopes or to pull tired children along! Finding the perfect spot to build a snowman is easy with crisp, fresh white snow everywhere and who knows, as is the magic of this place, he may just come to life when we are all asleep in our beds at night! This enthralling experience made Christmas so unforgettable for my granddaughter, who clutched her “Huskie Dog” (her present from Santa) from the minute she unwrapped it until Christmas Eve, when she left him out with her cookies and milk for Santa, so he could say Hello in case he missed him! Christmas is all about making dreams come true and creating memories that will be remembered for years to come – Santa’s Lapland allows you to do this.

Europe’s Happiest City Culture, Gastronomic Delights and History in Copenhagen

sept2016.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 25/08/2016 12:43 Page 77

The popularity of Denmark as a holiday destination has surged over the last couple of years. With their friendly culture, gastronomic delights, Viking history and the fact it is often voted one of the happiest places on earth, is no wonder this has become the ideal holiday destination for all ages. Whether it’s a hotel, apartment or boat, family, solo or romantic getaway there is something for everyone. Well known across the world as a cycling city, try grabbing The City Bike: a user-friendly bike rental system whereby you simply enter your card details into the touch screen pad on the bike and away you go! You can drop the bikes at any station once you’re finished exploring. Having said this, Copenhagen does have an extensive public transport system so if you’d rather save your energy for sight-seeing and shopping, hop on any of the S-Trains, Movia Buses or Metro. Stroget is not only the longest pedestrian street in the world, but is also the main shopping street in Copenhagen. Offering designer labels through to well-known department stores, Illum and Magasin. Jægersborggade is just behind Strøget but offers a charming, quieter shopping experience. Why not wander the streets to find yourself some gorgeous jewellery and have a wellearned coffee in a quiet café. Copenhagen has a long history dating back to the early 11th century and consequently has amassed many attractions to delight every age, from historical and cultural museums to amusement parks and castles. Tivoli Gardens Amusement Park is an absolute must see for all ages as the park dates back to 1843 and was the inspiration behind the Disney theme parks. Here you can experience theme park rides such as roller coasters and a hall of mirrors, as well as theatre, music and a range of culinary delights. The National Museum is Denmark’s largest historical and cultural museum so is a go-to for anyone wanting to discover the true history of Denmark. It has a wide range of fascinating exhibitions as well as activities and guided tours running throughout the year. Rosenborg Castle was built in the early 17th century by the famous Scandinavian King, Christian IV and still stands today to display 400 years of Danish royalty. Head to the Knight’s Hall to see the old coronation throne or walk through the palace to discover the crown jewels. If you’re an art enthusiast then you can’t miss a visit to The

National Gallery of Denmark. Home to over 700 years of artwork, this gallery is Denmark’s largest collection of art. From Renaissance to contemporary art, this gallery has it all! A trip to Christiansborg Palace is another one to add to your agenda. This palace is located on the tiny island of Slotsholmen and is the seat of the Danish Parliament, Supreme Court of Denmark and houses the Danish Prime Minister’s office. Lucky for us, much of the palace is open to visitors so you can take in a guided tour or pop down to the stables to admire the royal stallions in all their glory. Copenhagen was once home to the famous author Hans Christian Andersen who wrote many a beloved fairy-tale, including Thumbelina, The Princess and the Pea and The Little Mermaid. In 1913, the latter fairy-tale was immortalised through the building of The Little Mermaid statue by the waterfront in Langelinie, and she now enjoys more than 1 million visitors per year and is thought of as a symbol of Copenhagen. Rundentaarn, or the Round Tower, was another building built by King Christian IV and is your first stop if you want to see a stunning, birds-eye view of Copenhagen. Climb the 209m long winding spiral walk to the top and look out over the viewpoint or see what’s going on at the Observatory – Europe’s oldest functioning astronomy observatory! Until recently, Denmark as a location for foodies was unheard of. However, over the last decade, Danish cuisine has broken stereotype, with Copenhagen itself being the home to over 15 Michelin-starred restaurants. Fusing traditional, locally sourced ingredients with a modern twist, you’ll be able to find the classics or porridge, smorgasbords and pork all of which can be washed down with one of Denmark’s famous beers – and don’t forget to try the Nation’s dish of ‘stegt’. With a wide range of diverse accommodation available such as Europahuset Luxury Apartments offering stunning views of either Tivoli Gardens or the canals. A Copenhagen Houseboat or The Nimb Hotel a five-star stylish boutique hotel offering elegant bedrooms and is located within Copenhagen’s famous Tivoli Gardens, there is somewhere for everyone.
