This issue we’re bursting with inspiration for the change in season, from adding a little luxe to your interiors (page 41) to the latest styles you need to add to your wardrobe (page 25), we have it all. With a new season comes change, from the leaves falling from the trees to darker evenings as you come home from work, as well as changes in ourselves. We all tend to reflect on our life, circumstances, work/family, it must be something to do with the atmosphere around us. We need to start to be a bit more mindful of how we deal with life and the different situations it throws at us, so we thought we’d give you a little help on mindfulness (page 10).
Dubai, one of our favourite places to visit, everytime we go we discover something new, whether it’s the food, a shopping mall, restaurant or experience, we never get bored. This time we stayed at The Ritz Carlton Dubai located in the trendy and upbeat neighbourhood of JBR – (Jumeirah Beach Residence) directly on the beach and offering 5star luxury, page 53 tells you more.

Have you got your tickets to our Annual Charity Ball in November, we only have a few tickets left and we want this to be a sell out- Tell your friends and family and help us achieve this, page 17 gives you all the details. Six Ways to Make your Day More Mindful
sept2018.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 29/08/2018 18:08 Page 9
indfulness is no longer viewed as a touchyfeely fad! Using your time wisely and being more mindful of your breathing, surroundings and daily decisions may reduce stress and help boost your wellbeing, according to brand new research.[i] Instead of being preoccupied with memories of the past, churning thoughts, and worries about the future, our experts have provided 6 easy ways you can practice mindfulness in your daily routine - so you can start living in the present!
style focuses on poses that invigorate your immune system and stretch out the aches and pains of the week.”
Nutritionist, Alix Woods in collaboration with itsu, the healthy Asian inspired eatery (www.itsu.com) explains why plant power should be incorporated into our diet. “Meat is undeniably the mealtime superstar in western cultures. Conversely, the Asian diet, although variable between the many countries it comprises, is largely centred on plant foods; vegetables, whole grains, fruit and moderate amounts of lean protein. It’s easy to see why the Asian diet may be positively influential on wellbeing.
Alcohol may be making you depressed and anxious – As alcohol reduces the absorption of many essential nutrients, it may be having a major impact on your brain chemistry in a negative way. For example, those consuming excessive alcohol may have lower levels of tryptophan (the amino acid that is converted to serotonin). Low serotonin is a major feature of depression, anxiety, confusion and hostility. The absorption of B vitamins are also majorly affected by alcohol consumption, and deficiency in these crucially important vitamins will add to stress, nervous tension and energy levels,” explains Nutritionist and Fitness Instructor Cassandra Barns.

EAT MINDFULLY
“Meat is often served as a side element, whilst vegetables, soy products, spices and soups take the main stage. With abundant research pointing to the health and sustainability benefits of a plant-based diet, being mindful of our meat consumption and exploring new ways to incorporate plant-based protein onto our dinner plates are essential.” TIP: Try dedicating one day a week to being “Meat Free.” The perfect plant-based meal that Alix Woods recommends is the “itsu Humble Warrior [£5.79, itsu.com], which has baked not fried quinoa & sweet potato falafel, nutrient dense avocado, seed & veg salad, sushi rice with low fat green herb dressing.” PRIORITISE MINDFULLY
Remember that your health is the most important thing in your life and saying no is absolutely fine. “Being assertive is invigorating and empowering. It also helps to make lists of what is, or is not a priority, and to tackle the priority tasks first. This will help give you a sense of control over your life,” says Dr Marilyn Glenville, the UK’s leading Nutritionist and author of Natural Solutions for Dementia and Alzheimer's (www.marilynglenville.com). Maija Kivelä, Yoga instructor at Maître of Thyme (www.maitreofthyme.com) suggests to take a stepback and take some time to yourself with Restorative yoga to calm your mind. “Yoga in general can increase your mindfulness and calm both your mind and body. Restorative yoga in particular seeks to achieve physical, mental and emotional relaxation. It provides healing for the body and the mind. It is a mellow and slow-paced style of yoga that will have you holding positions for longer. This
TIP: Visit the holistic wellness boutique, Maître of Thyme, located in the heart of London, for a 1:1 tailored yoga class with Maija. “I really hope that my classes will not only support physical and mental strength but also make you happier and help you to follow a healthier lifestyle.” DRINK MINDFULLY
TIP: Thanks to its natural fizz, Equinox Kombucha (RRP £1.80, Waitrose), is the perfect alternative to alcohol. This refreshingly tasty drink is packed full of beneficial bacteria, essential acids and B-Vitamins to support gut health and aid digestion! CHOOSE MINDFULLY
Cassandra suggests considering hemp products for a natural helping hand when dealing with everyday stresses. Cassandra explains, “Phytocannabinoids are natural substances found in the hemp plant, most of which are non-psychoactive – in other words, they don’t have the mind or behaviouraltering effects associated with cannabis as a drug. Research has suggested that some phytocannabinoids can have benefits for our health – including anti-anxiety, calming effects. For this reason, a supplement containing natural phytocannabinoids could have benefits for calming our nervous system and helping prevent burnout. I recommend Natures Plus new HempCeutix Complete Capsules to help harmonise your mind and body (£39.95, www.naturesplus.co.uk).” GO TO SLEEP MINDFULLY
“Keep a journal by your bed where you can write down what you need to do the next day at least an hour before bed. The aim is to stop the dialogue in your head which can end up stopping you from getting off to sleep or else waking you up in the middle of night remembering something that has to be done the next day,” says Dr Glenville.

Keep the Flame
Burning
Top Life Coach Carole Ann Rice reveals her top tips of keeping that flame burning in a relationship that could salvage a marriage:
Date nights with a difference – date nights aren’t just for the start of relationships, it’s important to keep them up to keep lust in the air. Spice it up with a little role play, meet your partner at a venue and pretend you've only just met and enjoy being flirted with, chatted up - be seduced!
Surprise your other half regularly small, thoughtful gifts – favourite cake, book, magazine, bubble bath, a thank you card. Love notes – hide love notes for your other half – in their lunch box, suit pocket, handbag.
Give each other space – be cool about your partner wanting time out for hobbies, friends, sport - encourage separate interests. This keeps conversation lively, and watching your partner be passionate about his/her interests is super attractive. Don't take each other for granted - if you saw your partner at work you would remember they are a dynamic individual not just
another set of hands to change nappies, do washing up or make the beds. Take time to point out their attractive qualities outside of the family, practical surroundings.
Take up an adventure together - do a cookery course, learn about wine, go wall climbing, play poker, build a small online business – whatever it is, have a shared passion.
Remember to complement each other and be grateful - smile at each other and show appreciation - this sort of generosity is often overlooked when routine and familiarity see you as a team rather than romantic partners, but it’s important to keep intimacy alive.
Separate Identities – remember that each of you are individuals in your own right, outside of the relationship. Try to imagine your partner at work and see them as the independent and dynamic person they are. This can bring a certain attraction back into the relationship as it reminds you of their individual amazing qualities, rather than focusing on how tired or stressed they are when they get home from a long day or when dealing with family life. www.realcoachingco.com

Midlife Madness When I was little I remember my dad saying to me on a regular basis ‘don’t do as I do, do as I say’.
Now, while I get the point of it I must say as a somewhat older person sometimes I want to yell ‘do as I do’!
If I am patiently waiting in a queue, then why on earth would you imagine that it is ok for you to just march up to the front? That goes for car queues as well as people queues, isn’t it just such a pain when people go steaming up a lane on the outside when it is blatantly obvious to everyone else that there is a queue! Then of course they want to be let in right at the front and somehow I find myself letting them in, resentfully, but doing it anyway because I somehow can’t NOT.
But of course the other important thing I notice is that even though my parents have been dead for over 2 decades I still find myself doing what they said! Am I the only one? I think not – there I’ll be thinking to myself is this dress too short or not and I remember my dad telling me I looked like a ‘tart’ and to go and get changed when as a teenager I wanted to go out wearing something that resembled a belt more than a dress – yes younger readers, we wore short skirts even ‘back in the day’ . Or I remember my mother telling me that people looked like ‘mutton dressed as lamb’ at which point I usually put the mini back and reach for something much more age appropriate, you’ll be glad to know.
Although I also must confess I am not quite sure what age appropriate is anymore! It seems the strict clothing conventions are fast disappearing – well certainly I find shopping for clothes harder, not sure if that is because of
a lack of shops that seem to cater for my age range (older but still wanting to look nice) or my general hatred of trying clothes on in changing rooms – I have a had a few tricky moments in them when I have almost got stuck in my over optimistic size choice. But then how can I even begin to choose a size when the numbers on sizes appear completely meaningless.
But it’s not just clothes, recently I was eating a meal in a restaurant and while I would describe myself as vegetable lover the broccoli had been cooked to near extinction and the courgettes resembled hot cucumber. Yet, I heard this voice saying, ‘eat your greens up they are good for you’. But I’m almost 60 for goodness sake – I can make my own mind up surely. Maybe that’s what people mean when they say you live forever! The physical form might go but the words that have been spoken can hang around for a long time. Yes, you’ve guessed it I now spend a lot of time worrying about what I say as I know they might be remembered for all the wrong reasons. I mean has anyone really got cramp jumping in a pool immediately after eating, instead of letting the food settle or grown curly hair through eating crusts or in my case burnt toast! Or got piles form sitting on cold concrete or wet the bed after picking dandelions. Or even cried over split milk – unless through a harsh chastisement which is a bit different. Clearly, I can’t be sure, but my suspicion is not. So, while I am trying to rid myself of the many of the rules that seem to populate my head even as an old woman – I am also devising some sneaky ‘rules’ to give my own children. Things like be kind to parents or they’ll disinherit you!

Learning to
Look for Magic
sept2018.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 29/08/2018 18:09 Page 19
Spending time with children is great in all sorts of ways. They are usually natural optimists, they seem to find it much easier than adults to ‘be in the moment’ and of course have a tendency to believe in magic. It’s easy to dismiss those qualities as unimportant when you are an adult, but in fact we could all learn a lot and probably live happier lives by emulating the way children approach life. Think about the magic tricks you have seen, we all know there isn’t really any ‘magic’ but we still gasp in surprise if the trick is impressive or close at hand. Because a part of us wants to believe in magic. And of course, we use the word magic to mean generally things that are good and special, because when special things happen it does feel like magic. So, the trick must be to make sure that we actually see the magic that is all around us. As we grow older and go through life somehow what we see as magical initially we come to see as ordinary.
I remember once having a visitor form Gran Canaria, from my perspective she lived in a near paradise island – great climate and wonderful beaches, yet what she thought was amazing was the library in our relatively small town. She couldn’t believe the number of books that were available to borrow – essentially free reading. Not just fiction but lots of nonfiction and reference books and even magazines and DVD’s she said she thought it was ‘magic. That kind of sums it up, she was a woman who loved reading and was a very keen zoologist so was always wanting to check out facts about a wide variety of species she was studying. So, the library presented itself as something she wanted that she didn’t usually have – yet living in a town in England we take libraries for granted and stop seeing how wonderful they are. But that really brings us to think about what we see as important. It is very easy to get drawn into a cycle of working to make money to buy things – nothing wrong with that BUT it’s easy to become oblivious to some of the dare I say it even more important things.
In the recent film version of Peter Rabbit there is a repeated scene of the cockerel welcoming the dawn with massive excitement and surprise that the sun had indeed risen again. If we see each day as a gift – which of course it is as we can never take the next day for granted - perhaps we would share some of the excitement yet often we find ourselves grumpy, full of the worries or resentment rather than pleasure at the gift of a new day.
There are no seven wonders of the world in the eyes of a child, There are seven million Time for a change
Anon
So how do we manage to change our attitude to resemble that of a child more – ready to look for the magic that is all around us?
As with most things step one is to determine to be different, then the work starts with our thoughts and attitude. The fact is that there will always be some difficulties in life, some things that are a challenge or aspects of our life that are not going to plan. But we always have a choice, we can focus on those or we can worry about things that have happened (which usually we can’t change) or things that might happen in the future (which we can never control) OR we can learn to live in the present. When we begin to be more in the present, it is a lot easier to find magic. Regularly practising mindfulness can help with this.
Being present in the moment letting go of what is to come or has happened allows us the pleasure of enjoying what is in the moment, the beauty of the surroundings the pleasure of food the comfort of our home, the company of friends or loved ones and even the weather, for what it is. Yet so often we find things to grumble about. But the choice is ours we can look for the good or focus on something else. We can choose to be happy in the moment, in the knowledge that the moment is all we ever really have. A child can teach an adult three thing; to be happy for no reason, to be always curious, and to fight tirelessly for something Paulo Coelho
Being curious can also help, instead of flying off the handle when someone does or says something that might upset us it can be worth just pausing for a moment to wonder why they may have behaved that way – then the pause allows us to choose our response. We may still want to say something but sometimes we can realise if we give ourselves a minute to think that retaliating isn’t always necessary.
In essence, with the exception of people, who have serious mental health problems we can actually choose to be happy. But it is not something we do once it is something we need to do every single day, in fact repeatedly through the day, making a conscious decision to focus on the magic and be happy.

10 Ways to Get Heart Healthy this World Heart Day
5. Cut down on salt To help lower high blood pressure, watch your salt intake. It may be disguised in food labels as sodium alginate, sodium sulphite, sodium caseinate, disodium phosphate, sodium benzoate, sodium hydroxide, monosodium glutamate (MSG), or sodium citrate.
The World Heart Foundation’s annual campaign, World Heart Day, takes place this year on 29th September, with a reminder to take care of your heart on this day and every day.
Cardiovascular disease is the biggest cause of death globally. New research from the University of Ottawa Heart Institute indicates that women are more likely to die from heart failure than men. These are alarming facts but there are ways you can minimise your risk of cardiovascular disease.
We spoke to Consultant Cardiologist Dr Awais Bokhari, from newly opened private healthcare practice Harley Street Consulting Clinics in Great Denham, to find out his 10 simple steps to improving your heart health.
1. Get physical Step, march or jog in place for at least 15 minutes a day while watching your favourite TV shows. Increase your activity by five minutes each week until you're getting a minimum of 30 minutes most days of the week. 2. Eat healthily Keep packages of unhealthy food hidden. Put raw vegetables and fruits at the front of the refrigerator and healthy snacks at the front of the cupboard, so that's what you see first. If you grab healthy foods for a minimum of 21 times, healthy choices will become a habit.
3. Manage diabetes Having diabetes doubles your risk of diabetic heart disease. That’s because over time, high blood sugar from diabetes can damage your blood vessels and the nerves that control your heart. So, it is important to get tested for diabetes and, if you have it, to keep it under control.
4. Control cholesterol Eating foods high in saturated fat, trans fat or cholesterol can lead to high blood cholesterol. To help keep your cholesterol down, eat foods low in saturated fat and trans fat, such as lean chicken or turkey (roasted or baked, with skin removed), fruits and vegetables, low fat or fat free dairy products and whole grains. Look for recipe books that focus on heart health in your local bookstore.
6. Quit Smoking Try this four-step way to kick your habit: On Day 1, cut the number of cigarettes you smoke by half. On Day 3, cut the number of cigarettes you smoke in half again. On Day 5, cut your smoking in half again. On your Quit Day... quit!
7. Maintain a healthy weight Excess weight increases your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. To achieve steady weight loss, take it easy. Each day, if you eat 200-300 calories less than you would normally consume, and exercise at least 30 minutes on most or all days of the week, you'll get closer to your goal and be able to achieve weight loss that's steady and achievable.
8. Limit alcohol Drinking too much alcohol can raise your blood pressure. It also adds extra calories, which may cause weight gain. Knowing your units will help you stay in control of your drinking. Men should not drink more than 14 units per week and women should not drink more than 10 units per week.. Spread your drinking over five or more days if you drink regularly. If you want to cut down, try to have several drink free days each week.
9. Manage stress Stress is linked to heart disease in many ways. Extreme stress can be a trigger for a heart attack. Try exercise, listening to music, focusing on something calm or peaceful, and meditating to manage stress. 10. Schedule an annual check- up Your heart is in your hands. Each year on your birthday, schedule a check up to have your blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels checked and ask your doctor to help you reach or maintain a healthy weight. Be sure to follow your doctor’s recommendations, including taking prescribed medications as directed. Remember, no one can take better care of your heart than you. When you achieve your healthy goal, give yourself credit, it will help you maintain momentum with exercising, losing weight or quitting smoking, and don’t forget to keep track of your achievements and reward yourself by doing something you enjoy.

Beauty Secrets
eptember sees the end of summer but we really can’t complain, it’s been fabulous and I’m positive many of you welcomed the cooler weather with a sigh of relief. Moving from summer to autumn it may be necessary to switch our skincare to ensure your skin is getting what it needs, think about it, we change our wardrobe every season so why not our skincare. It can be something quite simple such as swapping your face wash for a cream, to help when we need to add more hydration as we go into the cooler months.
S
A favourite skin treatment at Dollyblue Beauty is Microneedling, if it’s good enough for celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston, Kim Kardashian, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pit then it’s definitely good enough for me and my clients.
But, what is it? Microneedling is a process that uses “controlled injury” through needling, an aesthetic medical procedure that involves repeatedly puncturing the skin with tiny sterile needles to stimulate our natural ability to heal, tighten and even generate a little volume. Ultimately it induces collagen stimulating growth factors that replace aging collagen with new collagen and also generates elastin. Sounds scary, right? Admittedly Microneedling is not a treatment you’d choose for relaxation, but for comfort an anaesthetic numbing cream is used. This results in wound healing, smoothing scars, visibly reducing stretch marks and drastically diminishing wrinkles and can produce results in just one treatment. At Dollyblue beauty we take safety in beauty very seriously so I only use SkinPen Precision it’s the safest and most superior for my clients, and it’s the only FDAcleared microneedling device in the UK. Now just to put it out there I'll try pretty much anything—especially if it’s
alleged benefits aid anti-aging so when recently I had a visit from the guys at Radara, who wanted to introduce me to their rejuvenating micro channelling patches to target crow’s feet, fine lines and wrinkles I couldn’t wait to give them a go.
The delicate skin around our eyes is often the first to show the tell-tale signs of ageing. Radara uses unique micro channelling technology to restore skin radiance and hydration; they promise delivering firmer smoother skin in just 4 weeks-all in a painless easy at home treatment. Disposable patches covered with thousands of m i c ro s c o p i c p l a s t i c structures, p a i n l e s s ly create micro channels (just like microneedling) when pressed against the skin. These micro channels mean that Radara’s specially formulated serum containing hyaluronic acid can flow into the deeper skin layers where it is needed most. After 2 weeks I could see some improvement but the best results where after the 4 weeks when my usually unobservant other half commented on me looking less like a shar pei than usual…hey, I’ll take that! Radara takes just 5 minutes to use each night, and comes with enough once-daily disposable patches and serum to last the one month treatment period. They are available in salon now. Until next time Fiona x

Slow-Roasted Lamb with Feta, Peppers and Dill Ingredients
“A perfect dish to enjoy and savour on a blustery autumn evening”
1 x 1.8-2kg shoulder of lamb on the bone, or two half shoulders 12-16 shallots, peeled and halved 2 bulbs garlic, halved widthways 2 tbsp coriander seeds Olive oil 200ml white wine 500ml chicken stock 750g small new or Anya potatoes, halved 3 sweet pointed peppers, halved, deseeded and sliced chunkily 3 tbsp clear honey 200g feta, crumbled 25g dill, roughly chopped zest of 1 lemon 1 x jar harissa paste or other chilli sauce, to serve
Method Preheat the oven to 150°C, fan 130°C, gas 2. Put the lamb in a large roasting tin with the shallots and garlic halves. Toast the coriander seeds in a small frying pan until fragrant, then crush using a pestle and mortar. Rub into the lamb with some salt and pepper, then drizzle the meat generously with oil. Pour in the wine and stock and cover the tin with foil. Bake for 2½ hours.
Remove the foil, add the potatoes and peppers to the tin and drizzle the honey over the lamb. Return to the oven, covered, for a further 1½-1¾ hours, or until the potatoes and lamb are tender. Transfer the lamb to a board. With a slotted spoon, transfer the garlic, shallots, potatoes and peppers to a warm platter. Cover to keep warm. Put the roasting tin over direct heat on the hob and bubble to reduce the juices to about 600ml. Tip into a jug and skim off the excess fat from the top, then briefly reheat in the tin and season to taste. Carve the lamb into chunks and layer with the vegetables, feta, dill and lemon zest on the platter. Serve with harissa.

Smoked Haddock and Crayfish Lasagne “A different take on lasagne and utterly delicious, perfect for a midweek family meal”
Ingredients 1 litre semi-skimmed milk 2 bay leaves 10 black peppercorns 1 x 400g pack skinless and boneless smoked haddock 75g butter 75g plain flour 125g extra-mature cheddar, grated 2 tbsp chopped chives 1 x 250g pack fresh lasagne sheets 2 x 80g packs crayfish or 150g small prawns 150g frozen peas, defrosted 125g slightly stale sourdough, blitzed to chunky crumbs 1 tbsp olive oil
Method
Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas 6. Lightly butter a 25 x 30cm lasagne dish. Place the milk in a wide pan with the bay leaves and peppercorns. Bring to the boil on a low heat, then add the haddock, remove from the heat and leave to sit for 4-5 minutes, until the fish is just starting to flake apart if pressed. Remove the haddock to a plate with a slotted spoon and leave to cool while you make the sauce. Make a roux by heating the butter and flour gently in a medium saucepan, stirring until the butter has melted and the flour incorporated. Continue to stir over a low heat for 2-3 minutes, until the flour is golden brown. Strain the poaching milk into a jug, and add to the roux a splash at a time, whisking until you have a smooth sauce. Bring to the boil, stirring regularly. Simmer for 2 minutes, then remove from the heat and stir in the cheddar until melted; season. Flake the haddock into large chunks. Stir the chives into the sauce. Spoon a thin layer of sauce into the base of the dish. Add a third of the lasagne sheets, trimming to fit, if needed. Spoon over a bit more sauce then add half the haddock, crayfish and peas. Repeat the layers of lasagne sheets, sauce, fish and peas. Finish with a final layer of lasagne sheets and sauce. Toss the sourdough crumbs with the olive oil and sprinkle over. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until the crumbs are golden and the pasta is tender.

Plum and Ricotta Filo Pie “A great dessert for impressing your guests at a dinner party”
Ingredients 10 South African plums, halved and pitted 100g caster sugar 100g butter 2 star anise 4 sheets of filo pastry 250g ricotta cheese 1 tsp vanilla extract 3 tbsp of date syrup (honey is a good alternative if you can’t find this) 50g pine nuts 20g poppy seeds Icing sugar, for dusting (optional)
Method
Preheat the oven to 200º C, fan oven 180°C, Gas Mark 6. Put the halved plums into a medium saucepan with 4tbsp water, the sugar, 25g of the butter and the star anise. Cook on a medium to low heat until the plums are poached, about 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and cool. Melt the remaining butter. Place the spring-form cake tin on the baking tray and brush the tin and baking tray below it with melted butter. Drape the first sheet of filo pastry over and into the cake tin. Brush the surface with melted butter. Do this with the other three sheets, criss-crossing them so that the entire inside of the cake tin is covered, but you have enough hanging over the sides to eventually cover the filling. Brush each layer with melted butter as you go. Mix the ricotta with the vanilla, date syrup (or honey) and pine nuts. Spread over the bottom of the cake tin. Remove the star anise from the plums, then spoon them into the cake tin, arranging them in an even layer. Cover the top of the pie by bringing up the hanging-down sides of filo and overlapping it on top of the pie. It doesn’t matter if it is crinkly and folded, as this is all part of the charm. Brush with melted butter. Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes, then carefully remove the spring-form tin and sprinkle the poppy seeds on top. Bake for another 15-20 minutes until the top is golden. Remove from the oven and let it cool briefly. With a spatula (or two) remove the pie from the baking tray and place on a decorative plate for serving. Sprinkle the top with a dusting of icing sugar, if you like. Recipe created by Kerstin Rodgers, aka Ms Marmite Lover

Time for Tea In
a Whimsical Wonderland “Would you like an adventure now, or shall we have tea first?” (Alice in Wonderland), definitely tea I think, but no ordinary tea mind you we are going to venture to The Sanderson Hotel in London and enjoy their special ‘Mad Hatters Afternoon Tea” On arrival we make our way into the private courtyard garden that really is a whimsical, lush hidden oasis within the hotel, full of nature as well as a fountain and reflecting pool. For the summer there are added extras inspired by Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé, such as the seated swing that has become a throne for the Queen of Hearts, adorned with pink roses for the perfect Instagram moment. Surrounding the chair is a flock of 50 flamingos, as remembered from Alice’s famous croquet match. It is so magical you almost expect the white rabbit to jump out from behind the trees.
First things first a glass of Perrier- Jouet champagne to enjoy whilst looking at the menu, and then it’s time for the fun to begin. Hidden inside a vintage hardback book is the menu, a savoury and sweet delight, the sugar is inside a working music box, complete with twirling ballerina. The crockery is decorated with zebras, birdcages and ticking clocks and the napkins are all wrapped in riddles – you feel like a child again, transported back to Alice’s adventures in a whimsical wonderland. The Teas, come loose leaf in miniature perfume bottles all named after characters, – I couldn’t resist opting for the ‘Queen of Hearts’, a red rose congu infused with red rose petals, with a hint of vanilla and chocolate and my friend chose ‘Cheshire Cat’, a marmalade orange infused tea with chocolate and hugging orange , both served in King and Queen teapots complete with crown.
Starting with delicious savoury bites, all with a little twist, from the quail scotch egg, surrounded by smoked salmon and topped with a taster of caviar, which was absolutely divine to the Stack of King of Hearts ham and parmesan croque-monsieur that literally melts in the mouth, all washed down with Alice’s exotic fruits “Drink Me” potion this afternoon tea just gets curioser and curioser. After devouring our savoury selection, it was time for the sweet treats, all creatively designed to keep with the theme, pocket watch macarons, playing card sandwich biscuits, marshmallow mushrooms, a chocolate and pistachio caterpillar as well of course scones!
Did the taste measure up to the creativity? Oh yes it certainly did, everything was delightful, we didn’t want to leave – Oh and I nearly forgot just as you think there are no more wonders in wonderland, a mini plant pot is brought to you filled with a chocolate and honeycomb ice-cream, topped with an edible flower, truly scrumptious. From the courtyard garden, to the exquisite presentation, quirky extras and delicious taste – this is a fabulous afternoon, that everyone has to experience at least once before it disappears down the rabbit hole! BOOK IT!
The Mad Hatters Afternoon Tea is priced from £48 per person and £35 per child (for children 4-11 years old). For reservations call 0207 300 5588 or email: restaurant.resuk@sbe.com www.morganshotelgroup.com

Fry’s Footie corner
At the time of writing this column, we are literally just three weeks into the new campaign and already a manager has lost his job. Gary Johnson was the unfortunate man who was given the boot after just four league games which saw him pick up one point. Gary is someone that I know well, he was the manager at Peterborough United and works his socks off for the club he represents. Whilst I understand that Cheltenham didn’t’ have a brilliant season last year, they gave him the opportunity to reshape his squad for the new campaign in the summer and you have to give him the chance to see what the players can achieve over a longer period of time. I feel very sorry for him, but hopefully he can get another chance in the game because he has a lot to give. Of course, sacking a manager so early is a regular occurrence. There are a whole host of managers under pressure after below par starts and that is just the way of the world these days. It is such a tough job.
At Peterborough, we have had a really good start to the season with four straight league victories including a hard
fought 1-0 away win at Charlton Athletic. Long may that run of form continue! We had a very busy summer with a lot of new players coming into the building and 19 players departing the ABAX Stadium.
The management deserve a lot of credit for the way they have gelled the players together, they are socialising together and it reminds me a lot of the first squad we had under Darren Ferguson. They are a tight knit bunch and team spirit can be a really important factor in a successful squad. In the Premier League, the big teams have all made good starts including Manchester City and Liverpool and I think it will be between those two for the title. City have lost the services of Kevin De Bruyne to injury, but they have a whole host of options to bring in including David Silva so I am sure they will be fine!
Barry
Enjoy the month!

Kinky Boots Returns to its Roots inky Boots, the winner of every major Best Musical award, will embark on a UK tour this autumn opening at Royal & Derngate in Northampton this month (September). returning to the home of this heart-warming British story, whilst the West End production continues at the Adelphi Theatre.
K
Kinky Boots has become a favourite with UK theatregoers having won three Olivier Awards for Best New Musical, Best Costume Design and Best Actor in a Musical for Matt Henry who played Lola. Kinky Boots also won the London Evening Standard BBC Radio 2 Audience Award for Best Musical as well as three WhatsOnStage Awards for Best New Musical, Best Actor in a Musical and Best Choreography.
With a book by Broadway legend and four-time Tony® Award-winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles), and songs by Grammy® and Tony® winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper, this joyous musical celebration is about the friendships we discover, and the belief that you can change the world when you change your mind.
Inspired by true events, Kinky Boots takes you from a gentlemen’s shoe factory in Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. Charlie Price is struggling to live up to his father’s expectations and continue the family business of Price & Son. With the factory’s future hanging in the balance, help arrives in the unlikely but spectacular form of Lola, a fabulous performer in need of some sturdy new stilettos. In the UK tour, award-winning Callum Francis will play Lola, fresh from starring in the Australian tour, Paula Lane, known for her role as Kylie Platt in Coronation Street, will play Lauren and Joel Harper-Jackson will play Charlie.
Composer and Lyricist, Cyndi Lauper said: “It has been a wonderful adventure and a privilege for me, to play a part in creating Kinky Boots. Everyone can relate to this universal story, and I am overwhelmed that people in the UK have embraced it with open arms. I am thrilled that this fabulous show will be touring the country!” Kinky Boots takes to the Derngate stage from Wednesday 19th September till Saturday 6th October. Tickets are priced from £16 to £55.50* and can be booked by calling Box Office on 01604 624811 or online at www.royalandderngate.co.uk.

Sangria, Sunshine and Smiles from
Benidorm Derren Litten's smash hit ITV comedy Benidorm is set to bring sunshine and smiles to the UK and Ireland as the first ever stage version of the ITV comedy marks its world premiere, and comes to coming to Milton Keynes Theatre this October. Litten has written an all new set of Alicante escapades for the much-loved cast members, including Jake Canuso (Mateo), Janine Duvitski (Jacqueline), Adam Gillen (Liam), Sherrie Hewson (Joyce Temple-Savage), Shelley Longworth (Sam), and Tony Maudsley (Kenneth) as they swap sangria for the stage next year after a quick spruce at the Blow ‘n’ Go!
Benidorm – Live will be the stage debut production of the hugely popular TV show, and on making its transfer, writer Derren Litten said: “I’ve loved ten years of writing my TV show Benidorm but despite a successful writing career I’m first and foremost a performer so have always been secretly frustrated I couldn't hear the audience’s laughter. This national tour of Benidorm Live will not only make a long lasting dream come true but will also mean I no longer have to stand in strangers gardens listening at their windows at 9 o’clock on cold winter evenings.”
ITV’s smash-hit comedy celebrates a decade of allinclusive hilarity, having followed the ensemble cast of
holiday makers and staff for nine series since it first broadcast in 2007. Season 10 is due to broadcast early 2018. Critically acclaimed, Benidorm has received two National Television Awards a TV Quick Award and nominations at the British Comedy Awards and BAFTAs.
After leaving school in Hull in the late 1980’s Derren Litten spent a year working as a professional magician whilst auditioning for drama schools. He won a place on the 3 year acting course at the prestigious Central School of Speech and Drama where he met fellow student Catherine Tate. After 10 years of working as an actor, Derren was asked by Catherine to write for her newly commissioned TV sketch show, The Catherine Tate Show; in which he also appeared in many of the sketches. After co-writing and appearing in two series and a Christmas Special, Derren was given a script commission by legendary comedy producer Geoffrey Perkins, “just write anything you want as long as it’s funny” he said; that show turned out to be ITV’s BAFTA nominated hit comedy Benidorm. Derren’s hobbies include drinking and karaoke, usually in that order. He splits his time equally between homes in London and Spain. Benidorm is appearing at Milton Keynes Theatre from Monday 15th – Saturday 20th October 2018 tickets are available from www.atgtickets.com

TRAVEL
Ritz Carlton, Dubai

An Arabian Adventure at
The Ritz Carlton Dubai A city of extremes, Dubai is a place where skyscrapers punctuate the skyline and the history will have you engrossed for hours, a place full of magic and intrigue. Some believe it’s luxury at its finest, others think it’s OTT, we however love it, it’s one of our favourite travel destinations, there’s always something new to be discovered, and the hotels never ever disappoint.
The Ritz Carlton Dubai, was our hotel this visit, located in Dubai’s elegant Marina district right next to the chic café-lined JBR Walk (Jumeirah Beach Residences), with views stretching across 350,000 sq. metres of landscaped gardens, golden sands and Arabian sea, this five-star hotel feels like a private oasis in the middle of the desert.
The lobby is impressive with exquisite flower displays, a fountain, chandelier and huge windows that showcase a fabulous view out to the Gulf, but we weren’t in the lobby for long, our bags were whisked off and we were escorted by the concierge to The Club Lounge, an exclusive private space on the third floor that is only accessible to guests who have booked a Deluxe Club room or above – A relaxing lounge environment with sofas, chairs, continuous culinary offerings that are delightful and available throughout the day (breakfast, light snacks, lunch, afternoon tea, hors d' oeuvres, sweets and chocolates) as well as a premium selection of wines, beer and spirits (including champagne and prosecco - I am a very excited lady) and hot and cold beverages, all at no extra cost. The perfect place to take a little shelter from the sunshine, sit on the balcony or lounge on the sofas inside, sipping a cool drink and simply unwinding. There’s also access to a computer station just in case you are tempted to do just a little bit of work, and a dedicated
Concierge who attends to everything you need. Our room was just as impressive, accents of pale greens and yellows with dark wood furniture and ornate artwork on the walls, a 47” flat-screen TV, Nespresso machine a huge feather bed that was so comfy, it was a pleasure to sleep in and as with most luxury hotels now a tablet by the bed to operate just about everything! Double sinks in the bathroom (I love it when this happens, no arguing over who’s taking too long), a large marble bathtub and an oversized rain shower that was a pleasure to use, especially when accompanied by Asprey toiletries (as I said before, Dubai know how to do luxe without any effort), and finally the balcony, a little haven with comfortable furniture to look over the pools (there’s 5 in total), glistening sea and soft golden sand. And it was the golden sand that we were heading for, to find ourselves a lounger and recharge on the beautiful beach. The hotel’s

waterfront location means it has access to its own private beach, with dedicated staff, who give out towels, bring you bottles of water in their own cool boxes, take a drink order and even bring you fresh fruit – This same service is on hand when you laze by one of the five pools, two of which are specifically for children, one with slides and one without along with the separate adults’ pool for those that like a little quiet time. The gardens are amazingly lush and lead you to discover something different around each corner, whether it’s one of the nine restaurants or lounges, the spa or even one of the event areas on the beach, there is a surprise awaiting you at every turn.
Most of our stay we ate in the Club Lounge, the food was so varied and delicious, it would be a crime not to, but we couldn’t resist the pull of Amaseena, the Bedouin-style outdoor dining experience, that you need to try at least once during your stay. An outdoor restaurant that captures the romance of Arabia, with its Bedouin-inspired tents that are scattered with cushions and seating areas, palm trees lit with sparkling lights beneath the twinkling desert sky. A place to tempt your palette with imaginative Arabic dishes served buffet style (but not as we know it) – Once seated in our own private tent, the chef came over to accompany us around the different foods, explaining what the different dishes were – it was like being in another world, walking through a souk in Morocco with charming oldfashioned stands filled with different foods from an Arabian menu that included hummus, moutabbel, salads, all mouthwateringly delicious in not only taste but presentation as well.
After the appetisers (if you’ve got room) it’s time to experience some of the tajine dishes, a shawarma or even some lobster, red snapper, tiger prawns or lamb chops from the grill station. There’s no rush to eat your food you can just sit back and engulf yourself in the whole Arabian ambience, the food is literally an explosion of tastes and culinary delights on your taste buds and it doesn’t end with the savoury, there’s a whole section of desserts including Arabian sweets that are all washed down perfectly with fresh mint tea. The enchantment of this dining experience is one you’ll remember for years to come. There’s never enough time to experience everything we want to when we visit places, but before jetting home I was determined to have a little pampering and pay a visit to the hotel’s spa, where I made full use of the hammam and plunge pools before enjoying an aromatic bespoke relaxation massage that certainly melted away any tension or stress I was feeling at the thought of returning home and back to reality.
All too soon our stay was over (don’t worry I already have the next trip booked), The Ritz Carlton Dubai certainly lived up to all expectations, it is five-star luxury at its best, whether it’s watching the sunset with a cocktail on the beach, enjoying some of the divine cuisine on offer or just dipping your toes in the pool there is no place like it, and as they say ‘the only place in the world that makes the impossible, possible!’
TOP TIP: Pay the extra and book a Deluxe Club Room or above to allow you access to The Club Lounge, the little extras are so worth that little bit more. BOOK IT

More Than Just a Club ith grounds stretching down to the River Thames, practically at the finish line of the Henley Regatta it’s no surprise that at first glance you think Phyllis Court Club in Henley on Thames is a privilege only private members can be part of, it is something that you can only admire from afar, a place to have a game or two of croquet, take refreshments in the private bar or sit on the large outdoor terrace admiring the breath-taking river views, lifting a hand like Royalty to wave to an over excited boat as it sails past, but it’s not and you can.
W
Founded in 1906, Phyllis Court is situated on the borders of Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, with 18 acres of picturesque lawns that sweep down to the River Thames, it is not just a private member club it also opens its doors for business meetings, weddings, special occasions or even an overnight stay in one of its 17, luxurious bedrooms most of which overlook the Thames, and stay the night is exactly what we had decided to do and we couldn’t wait!
Arriving at the main entrance, unless you’re a member and have a card to swipe, you have to ring the bell to be let into the spacious reception area that leads into a large regal looking lounge. Think large velour sofas, in bottle greens and deep reds, antique wood furnishings, gold framed pictures on the walls, light accents reflected in the lamps and soft furnishings around the room, a perfect place to enjoy morning coffee, afternoon tea or even a G&T or two. A place to read the papers, have a little catch up with friends or just to sit back and reflect on the day ahead – There are no businessmen on laptops here, no one making calls in loud voices that the whole lounge can hear – because the use of laptops/electronic devices and mobile phones are not allowed in the public areas – which means for me who loves a little instagramming and FB uploads had to pop to our room to do it Not that that was such a hardship! Our room, a Deluxe Double, (more like a suite) was elegantly furnished with a sofa and 2 chairs in deep greens and reds, the walls were light in colour as was the carpet, with a feature fireplace wall having deep red wallpaper to tie the whole room together. A flat screen TV, desk and tea and coffee facilities finished
the look of a high-end London apartment – and of course the icing on the cake - The views from the large windows over the Thames.
Much as I was tempted to just laze in the room, boat and people watching, I decided to do this from the comfort of the outdoor terrace where we ordered a couple of G&T’s from the lovely barman and sat down enjoying the sunshine, views, drinks and nibbles (available in small dishes to help yourself to off the bar). The terrace had a lovely atmosphere of relaxing charm, although fairly busy with people having drinks, afternoon tea and food from the all-day menu it didn’t seem overcrowded or noisy, and there’s certainly no pomp and circumstance as you may expect from a private member club.
We had a lovely afternoon, the outlook couldn’t be more perfect, looking out over the manicured lawn, as it stretched down towards the Thames – There was a game of croquet taking place in the distance, the white of the participants clothes glistening in the sunshine, we sat there for a while taking in our surroundings, enjoying our drinks before we decided to have a walk across the lawns to the river to watch the boats sail by. Whilst staying as a guest at Phyllis Court you have the added bonus of having temporary membership which means you have use of all the facilities including the recently opened fitness centre. But there was no time to visit the fitness centre for me I had to get ready for dinner. Dinner was served in The Orangery, an elegant room that has been designed to complement the Georgian architecture within Phyllis Court – and to enjoy of course the spectacular views along the river.
The ethos of dining at Phyllis Court, is you never know when hunger may strike, the menu is based on the all-day dining concept, whether it’s a hot croissant with butter and strawberry jam for breakfast, a salad or steak for lunch, a mid-afternoon sandwich, or a three-course meal in the evening, the menu is there all day and the choice is yours.

As it was evening and all that exploring had made us hungry we were going for the full three courses, starting with fresh grilled Cornish sardines with a tomato and shallot salad, this was utterly delightful, I wanted to bottle up the tomatoes and take them home they were so juicy and full of flavour as was the buffalo mozzarella with vine tomatoes and fresh basil, in hubby’s words “proper mozzarella” (he’s Italian so that’s a big compliment). Griddled Suffolk BBQ chicken with avocado salsa and sweet potato fries followed along with the Hereford red rump cap steak both were delicious and beautifully presented. We kept dessert very traditionally British (well we were in a private member club) and opted for fresh English strawberry and vanilla tart with clotted cream and The Phyllis Court Eton mess, both were an absolute treat and looked just as good as they tasted. The service, ambience and the beautiful outlook all add to the overall dining experience here and it was impeccable, which mustn’t just be our opinion, as it was a Monday evening and The Orangery was full. We couldn’t resist an evening walk around the grounds, before retiring for a restful night’s sleep.
Breakfast the next morning is again served in The Orangery, a selection of continental (help yourself) or cooked (from the menu), including eggs Benedict, pancakes, waffles and full English. After breakfast we took our coffees out onto the terrace to enjoy the morning sunshine one last time, before we had to head back home. Phyllis Court is a hidden gem that not many people will be aware of, you can spend your time exploring the beautiful grounds, walking along the River Thames, or relaxing on the terrace with some delicious food and drink – the choice is yours you can do as much or as little as you like – just be sure to tell your friends! Time to Escape Bubbles, bubbles everywhere, not only was I sipping a cool glass of champagne on a glorious sunny day, I was also relaxing in the hydrotherapy pool, as bubbles gently massaged my tired body and I wasn’t planning on moving anytime soon.
After a hectic month, I was taking a few hours to myself and spending it at Y Spa (set within the Waterfront Hotel in Wyboston) for some rest, relaxation and a little pampering. It is the perfect place to get some ME time back, whether it’s for half a day, a whole day or even overnight, you’re guaranteed to come away feeling rejuvenated and ready to face the world and anything it throws at you. With its Hydrotherapy Pool, hot and medium heat saunas, steam rooms, experience showers, ice wall and relaxation rooms, you’ll find yourself doing absolutely nothing and the only decision you’ll have to make is “Where to next?” For me though, nothing beats just sitting in the bubbling hydrotherapy pool, as the water wraps itself around my body and the bubbles gently massage away my tension – add a glass of a different type of bubbles and I’m in pure girlie heaven.
Hubbie also likes it hot, but not in the water, his choice is the “Some like it Hot” Sauna, housed in a wooden cabin, made with one hundred year old logs overlooking the hydrotherapy pool (great for all you men wanting to keep an eye on your lady and how many glasses of champagne she indulges in) and heated to 85 degrees or above, it’s definitely not for the faint hearted.
A two course buffet was included in our package (we had opted for the ‘Afternoon Idle’), which is an array of hot and cold dishes that include soup, cold meats and fish, salads, curry, roast pork, pasta and more, you really are spoilt for choice, and then there’s dessert, a real treat for all the sweet toothed amongst us as well as cheese and biscuits.
All this eating is hard work, so we headed to the chill out area for a little snooze on the water beds, (oooh I could have stayed here all day), the calming ambience makes you feel as if you really have escaped from the real world. All too soon our time in the spa was over, but our time at The Waterfront wasn’t. Once I’d carried out a little makeover on myself in the spacious, fully equipped

changing rooms we headed to The Waterfront bar and restaurant for dinner. A swish space with floor to ceiling windows looking out over the lake, comfy seating and atmospheric lighting all coming together to create a relaxing space to enjoy dinner. We began with some warm rustic bread, olive tapenade, butter and oils whilst we waited for starters of asparagus spears with wild mushrooms and quails eggs, beautifully presented and full of mouth watering flavours and duck rilettes which proved to be another big hit. Slow cooked lamb fillet with roast Mediterranean vegetables, grilled aubergine and minted new potatoes followed, the lamb literally melted in the mouth and the pan fried wild stone bass that was hubbies choice was fresh, meaty and flavoursome.
The dessert menu looked so tempting, that all my good intentions went out of the window. The mango and passionfruit parfait was creamy, fruity and a real delight as was hubbies choice of baked cherry cream with praline burnt meringue and pistachio biscotti, the ideal way to end a perfect day of indulgent relaxation.
