Vintage meets Modern
Dark metallic tones against clear acrylics, wild loose blooms and foliage against antique furniture, were the inspiration for this vintage with a modern twist styled shoot at the picturesque country house hotel, Barrington Hall.

She doesn’t like too much makeup. The colour pink makes her cringe. She’s got style, a sexy edge and confidence yet deep down she is a hopeless romantic. She still likes chivalry and pretty things and is drawn towards old places yet craves all things modern.
A perfect vintage up do and boho twopiece dress against dark metallic tones set the scene for this shoot - chic and bold yet classic and elegant. All the details are perfectly brought together by vintage gold and bronze touches throughout, twinkly fairy lights give a soft and romantic backdrop as the sun disappears in the horizon. A game of mix and match, old and new. Eccentric influences merge with understated elegance. A game of mix and match that blends the present with the past effortlessly

Berry Beautiful
Romantic and atmospheric with a rich colour palette of navy, berry red and gold was the inspiration for this shoot that took place within the oak panelled rooms of Rothamsted Manor.
autumn 2018.qxp_Layout 1 02/01/2019 14:11 Page 36
Brought together by Lee Rushby Photography and Venue Styling by Sara, this shoot takes its inspiration from a rich colour palette of bold colours, sophistication and elegance. Romantic, atmospheric and a little moody the navy, berry red and gold, blended perfectly with the oak panelled rooms of Rothamsted Manor.
The main focus of the shoot was The Great Drawing room, where the grand dining table was dressed with luxurious silk flowers from Iris Floral Design with some wonderful flourishes of Red Berry, Navy and Gold. The sea of flowers along with candles, lanterns and geometric shapes were added to all the settings throughout the shoot. Blue and purple lighting from Bluemark Entertainment brought the rooms to life and beautiful stationary from Sarah Ardrey designs tied in the styling and florals effortlessly add to that classic bombonieres from Bomboniere by Maria and the tablescape was finished off perfectly. An elegant cake in deep colours from La belle Cake Company continued the theme.
Against the dark moody backdrop the bride wore a beautiful, delicate lace dress from George James bridal, with hair accessories from Rachel Louise Bridal Accessories. The groom looked dashing in his vintage three piece suit from the Vintage Suit Hire Company. The dark hues in this shoot show that bold colours aren’t anything to be scared of, they ooze luxury and elegance. A very classy and sophisticated choice for elaborate weddings.

Regal Elegance
Vicky and Chris were married on 18th May 2018 at Knowsley Hall in Prescot, Merseyside
autumn 2018.qxp_Layout 1 02/01/2019 14:12 Page 47
How did you meet? We actually met in 2007 whilst working at Channel M, which was a local TV station for Manchester back in the days before anyone knew local TV even existed. I was given Chris’ number by a colleague when I was in need of a freelance cameraman to film some boxing, and the first time I called him he was actually on holiday in New York outside the McDonalds in Time Square. We had such a lovely chat even before we had met each other, and then when Chris got home we became really close friends over the course of a year. The day we got together, Chris had text me to see if I wanted his spare ticket to go and see the Verve play at Manchester Central on the 20th December 2007. I took a while to get back to him, by which point he had actually given his spare ticket to someone else. He felt bad so came into town early to find a tout, and swapped his two tickets for the next night for one for me to go with him and his friend. I’m not sure what happened that night to change our relationship, but we were always quite cuddly and for some reason when he put his arms around me during the gig it all just felt right. How did the proposal happen? Chris had been to France while working on the Euros, and decided he wanted to take me back to Paris to show me round, however he planned it last minute right on top of Christmas (which I was so stressed trying to get organised for) that it never crossed my mind something romantic was on the cards. We had a lovely time in Paris, with one of the things being dinner at the top of the Eifel Tower. Security is understandably quite tight as you enter the Eifel Tower, and all guests are required to empty their pockets. Thankfully for Chris I’m generally in my own world, so I was completely oblivious to the exchange between him and the security guards as he pulled out a ring box - It seems they are not only trained in security, but also in how to recognise the look of fear on a man’s face when trying to hide an engagement ring! We went for dinner, and between courses Chris pushed a small box across the table to me. This particular box was an Eifel Tower Pandora charm,
autumn 2018.qxp_Layout 1 02/01/2019 14:12 Page 48
which while beautiful wasn’t quite what I was expecting! After dinner we went to the very top of the Eifel Tower, and it’s here the proposal took place in front of a plaque explaining that the Eifel Tower had once been the tallest radio tower in the world (rather apt as both our jobs are in broadcasting). He got down on one knee, and asked me to help turn a dream into a plan and would I marry him. This time he definitely wasn’t ready for my reaction. Among me asking ‘are you serious’ and ‘have you asked my dad’, a very nice English speaking onlooker reminded me that I needed to say yes. The rest, as they say, is history. Where did the wedding take place? St Mary’s Church in Knowsley Village, before going on to our reception at Knowsley Hall. What did you wear (bride)? An Enzoani gown, which I customised to my style by cutting away the mesh and introducing a peep hole. I also added extra beading to the shoulders to pull everything together. What did the rest of the Bridal party wear? The bridesmaids wore dusky blue dresses, and the men all wore blue suits with ties and pocket squares to match the bridesmaid dresses.
What was your theme? Our theme was contemporary regal elegance, which we felt pulled our tastes and the theme of the venue together nicely. Something Blue? My shoes! They were beautiful blue lace Jimmy Choo’s, which I still like to take out of the box to stroke every once in a while. What were the highlights? The absolute highlight has to be the first dance which was to Lucky Man by the Verve. Chris walked in from the other room playing our song on the guitar, while the band performed with a string trio on stage. It was absolutely amazing in every way and a moment I will never forget.
Your best buy? I actually think both the venue and the band Soul Revolver were phenomenal value for money. The venue was just stunning with such amazing access for what you pay compared to other stately homes, not to mention how brilliant and attentive the staff are at Knowsley too.
How did it end? We had breakfast the next morning with our close friends and family, and once everyone else had gone the venue very kindly let myself and Chris have a wonder around the gardens together. Thankfully the weather was still beautiful, so while everyone else settled in to watch the royal wedding, we took our first proper moment together whilst wandering in the stunning grounds of Knowsley Hall to reflect on a royal wedding of our own. Where did you go on honeymoon? We went to Atmosphere Kanifushi in the Maldives. The resort was beautiful, and the staff just couldn’t do enough for us. We even saw a shooting star while having our candlelit honeymoon meal on the beach.

Andi and Andrew were married on 11th August 2018 at Thanda Safari Game Reserve in South Africa.
autumn 2018.qxp_Layout 1 02/01/2019 14:12 Page 51
How did you meet? We met in Cannes, France at a work conference, spotting each other like two giraffes over the crowds. I had just come from Kenya and it was my first time in France while Andrew was starting a new venture in Rome. I had been in Rome the week before and met a friend of Andrew’s which we discovered with great excitement. Andrew took a photo of me to send to his friend for confirmation and still has that picture 7 years later. Little did we know that our meeting would change our lives as I moved from South Africa to Rome to be with Andrew. How did the proposal happen? Andrew surprised me at the front door while I was visiting family in the Cotswolds. He proposed as I opened the door and we spent the weekend celebrating with family. It was perfect.
Where did the wedding take place? On Andi’s favourite game reserve, Thanda Safari in KZN, South Africa
What did the bride wear? A beautiful Miss Hayley Paige dress. I tried on so many gorgeous gowns and was going for something more traditional with lace, but
autumn 2018.qxp_Layout 1 02/01/2019 14:12 Page 52
when I tried this dress on I knew it was the one. The beading in the dress reminded me so much of Africa and the tribal necklaces I am so inspired by.
What did the rest of the bridal party wear? I am lucky enough to have had a bridesmaid who is a fashion designer. None of my bridesmaids saw my dress until the day but Jess understood my vision and designed beautiful dresses for our safari chic wedding. They also wore beaded neck pieces and earrings with tribal shoes. What was your theme? Safari chic.
Describe your cake? Andrew and I were very relaxed with catering, we had been to Thanda before and knew their level was so high! John, the executive Chef, and his lovely wife surprised us with the most delicious carrot cake, we absolutely loved.
What were the highlights? Oh, this is an impossible question as the whole day was an absolute fairytale. The traditional Zulu Mammas that lead me down the aisle is certainly a moment I will never forget. Goosebumps! Your best buy? We bought a little polaroid camera that was passed around and the natural snaps taken by everyone over the weekend are really special.
How did it end? After the DJ played Andrea Bocelli, “Time to say goodbye” we were escorted though the bush to our honeymoon tent which had been beautifully set up for us. Is there anything you wish you’d done differently? Not get stressed about little things, everything was perfect on the day.
Where did you go on honeymoon? We stayed at Thanda Safari for 2 extra nights after the wedding and then went on to an island in Mozambique.

How did you meet? After several years of searching for love and despite neither of us wanting to resort to the internet to find love - Gareth and I met online. I knew from our first date that Gareth was different from any other guy I had met and we saw each other three times in the first week of meeting. Personally, I think Gareth got a bargain because he only paid for a 1 month subscription before he found me, where as I paid for 6 months before I found him! He was worth every penny though!
How did the proposal happen? We bought our first house together and spent a lot of time making the house the way we wanted it. Gareth was obsessed with doing a lot of work in the garden and one Saturday afternoon (5th June), Gareth called me on his way back from golf and asked if I could ring our local garden centre to see if they had a delivery of turf. With the garden centre due to close within the next half an hour, I reluctantly gave them a call. Unfortunately for me, they had a delivery and the next thing I know, I am racing to the garden centre and then loading up my car with 10 rolls of fresh turf! They’re pretty heavy and pretty muddy!! I was a little bit bemused to say the least as to why Gareth was so keen to get this turf, and to then also get it laid the same evening!! Little did I know back then that he was doing all of this because the next afternoon when I returned home from work, he would get down on one knee, in our beautiful garden and ask me to marry him. I was in complete shock and totally blown away.
Where did the wedding take place? With both Gareth and I not getting any younger, we knew that we wanted to get married fairly quickly. As a child I used to have our end of year school assemblies at All Saints Church in Marlow and I used to dream about getting married there. Thankfully we were able to hold our ceremony there and my dream was realised. With regards to reception venues we knew that we wanted somewhere relaxed and informal and after seeing six potential venues, Phyllis Court in Henley-onThames was the clear winner for us. It was our dream venue, the perfect setting on the River Thames where our guests could relax and celebrate with us. It was somewhere informal yet fun, exclusive and elegant. We had our wedding breakfast in the Riverside Pavilion which is a stunning location looking out on to the river and in the evening we danced the night away in the magnificent Ballroom. What did the bride wear? I’d always dreamed of a ball gown, after all when else in your life would you get to wear something so extravagant! I had waited 38 years to take my Mum wedding dress shopping and it was without a doubt one of the best experiences of my life. After visiting maybe five bridal shops and a few emotional tears later I settled on a Ronald Joyce gown called Audrey, which I purchased from the Bridal House in High Wycombe.
What did the rest of the bridal party wear? I knew that I wanted my bridesmaids to be in navy blue, but to be honest that was all I knew. With six bridesmaids living in different parts of the country it was tricky to coordinate a time when everyone was free, but we managed to get everyone together with my bridesmaids choosing from either a two shoulder or one shoulder navy blue dress. The top of the dress was lace to compliment the lace on the top of my dress with
autumn 2018.qxp_Layout 1 02/01/2019 14:12 Page 56
the skirt being chiffon. My flower girl wore a beautiful white chiffon dress from Debenhams. The men wore matching dark grey suits from Moss Bros with a navy-blue cravat and a cream waistcoat and our page boy had the same as the men, but just in a mini version! What was your theme? We both have a love for South Africa and going on safari, so despite our colour theme being navy blue, there was also a strong South African theme. Our tables were named after safari animals with our top table being named after our favourite game reserve in South Africa called Ulusaba. Our ladies’ favours were beaded candle holders that were made by the local community that is adjacent to Ulusaba so our favours went some way to supporting local projects, back in what we like to call our second home. Gareth has a military background and it is custom at formal military dinners to drink port to toast The Queen. Despite not using them to toast The Queen the gents’ favours were small bottles of port and a lottery scratch card. Describe your cake Continuing the South African theme our cake was fairly simple, but with silhouettes of Africa. The silhouettes were navy blue to match the bridesmaids and the cake was 4 tiers with 4 different flavours. Lemon, chocolate, carrot cake and traditional fruit cake on the bottom. Something blue? My shoes were my something blue. Roland Cartier, sparkly blue with a mid-heel.
What were the highlights? They were so many highlights, but a couple of things really stand out. With a love of ice cream (Mr Whippy in particular!) I had always dreamt of having an ice cream van at our wedding, but as the expense of the wedding mounted, I decided that as much as I’d love an ice cream van, it would be an unnecessary expense. My Dad however thought otherwise and I was totally blown away when he told me that he had secretly arranged an ice cream van for our special day. It was absolutely brilliant and Gareth and I even got to serve our guests with ice cream! After our ceremony at All Saints Church in Marlow, we arrived at Phyllis Court by boat and all of our guests were waiting on the balcony when we arrived, which made us feel like royalty. We had the most wonderful reception as we stepped off the boat and we were immediately given a glass of champagne it truly was perfect. Our final highlight would be how wonderful and attentive the staff at Phyllis Court were on the day. Everything ran like clockwork and the staff couldn’t have done any more for us and our guests. The whole
FINER DETAILS
day was absolutely seamless.
Your Best Buy? It has to be the ice cream van.
How did it end? Our special day ended with sparklers by the river and then back inside for the last dance of the evening - Take That’s Never Forget!!
Is there anything you wish you’d done differently? Having never organised a wedding before it’s hard to know what to do for the best. My only regret is not staying at Phyllis Court the night before our wedding. As a little girl I always wanted to go to the church from my family home, but in hindsight with Mum, Dad, six bridesmaids, one flower girl, a photographer, a videographer, two hairdressers and a make-up artist it was a bit tight for time and space. Where did you go on honeymoon? Gareth and I love a sense of adventure so as much as two weeks on the beach after all the planning and preparation sounded appealing we knew that it wouldn’t be for us. We also wanted to go somewhere that we were never likely to go to again. So we were lucky enough to combine relaxation with adventure and we headed to Borneo. We had three nights of relaxation on the beach before heading into the jungle where we stayed on the Kinabatangan River, where we saw Oranguntuns in the wild, as well as Pygmy elephants and other wildlife native to Malaysia. It was without a doubt a once in a lifetime experience.

Jewel and Ron were married on 8th December 2017 at The Royal Horseguards Hotel in London.

How did you meet? We met online. We messaged each other for about a month. During those messages I told him once that I was going to New York for a wedding and the day I arrived in NY, he messaged that he hoped I enjoyed time with my family and the wedding. He remembered! I knew then that I had to make plans for a first date when I came back in town.
How did the proposal happen? It was just a couple weeks before leaving on vacation to London and I came home from work after a long day. He sat on the couch next to me and told me he had something to tell me with a concerned look. He waited for my worry to settle in and with the words “I don’t think I can take this on the plane” he presented the ring box opened with my engagement ring. It was a moment just for us. Where did the wedding take place? Royal Horseguards Hotel in London. Many ask me why London since we live in the States and that’s not a “normal” wedding destination and to that I say “Give me a good reason why not?” What the bride wear? The wedding designer is Lazaro and it was the first dress I picked out. I tried on others but the first one is where I landed. What did the rest of the Bridal party wear? Long gold sequin dresses with low backs.
What was your theme? We didn’t really have a theme per se. It was more of a feeling we wanted our guests to have. London and the wedding venue gave it an old world feel. It was very winter classic. Describe your cake Classy and understated.
Something Blue? The groom and groomsmen wore blue tuxes and I had a blue stone in the bottom of each of my wedding shoes.
autumn 2018.qxp_Layout 1 02/01/2019 14:13 Page 60
What were the highlights? The whole night was magical. All equally a highlight. Your best buy? The wedding welcome party
How did it end? Our wedding DJ is a member of one of my favourite bands and was flown in from the States. He eventually needed a break after playing hours of music for the reception. The party ended with me, my maid of honour and bridesmaid DJing till the end of the night. We’re huge music fans. We loved every minute of it.
Is there anything you wish you’d done differently? No. I don’t watch any more wedding shows which helps us not question our decisions and experiences. Ha Ha! Where did you go on honeymoon? We left the very next day on a train to Amsterdam where we spent a couple of days at the extremely beautiful Pulitzer Hotel, enjoying shopping and the sights, including the Royal Palace, Ann Frank House and Van Gogh’s House. It snowed enough to close stores early and shut the trains down which made it so much more special and romantic considering how infrequently it snows in Amsterdam.

Ultimate Luxury in Mustique X Marks the Spot or the ultimate in luxurious honeymoons, private travel designers Niquesa offer a unique experience, starting by interviewing the bride and groom before they travel to discover information including where they first met, favourite song and meal, as well as speaking with select wedding guests and family members.
F
Once this information is sourced, the couple fly to Mustique and stay in a beautiful suite at The Cotton House for three nights. The first few days are for relaxing, pampering and reflecting on their special day. On day four, over a romantic private beach stroll the newlyweds discover a washed up ‘message in a bottle’. This message is a personal invitation to board a luxury yacht that afternoon to embark upon the most romantic treasure hunt imaginable. The yacht is crewed and sails from Mustique to Tobago Cays. The sailing part is
two days and one night on board and allows them to explore some of the most beautiful uninhabited islands, cays and corals. The happy couple can enjoy a private lobster BBQ lunch and champagne on a private sand cay, left there for the afternoon to relax and be completely alone. The yacht returns at sunset for an on-board dinner under the stars serenaded by music chosen from their wedding.
The next morning they wake up on board and after a Champagne breakfast the treasure hunt commences following clues on deserted islands until bride and groom find the buried gifts that they have chosen for each other. The yacht sales onwards to Canouan where the couple then enjoy three nights at The Mandarin Oriental’s newly opened private villas. There is a guideline price of £40K per couple. Overnight Stay: The Williamsburg Hotel The essence of an entire neighbourhood was distilled into this hotel. The Williamsburg Hotel is in equal parts hip, high-end and historical. The industrial past of its surrounding is merged with the drive of its present as a creative hub. The boutique hotel’s cosy design and private atmosphere make it perfect for a lovers’ getaway.
Breakfast: Buvette From its affectionately designed furnishings to the fanciful getup of its servers, this charming restaurant is a close-toperfect representation of a romantic café of bygone days. Its only weakness is its small capacity (there are around 15 tables). The small size, however, creates an intimate ambiance for any couple’s brunch or breakfast. We particularly recommend the hidden courtyard. Morning Activity: Tribecca Sailing The feeling of the fresh breeze joins breath-taking skyline views onboard a Tribeca Sailing private cruise. Make new memories together, while sailing the waters around the island of Manhattan and enjoying unforgettable moments on their historical yacht.
Lunch: Pearl Oyster Bar “New England Style” seafood restaurants have become an incremental part of New York’s restaurant scene. The small and fun placePearl Oyster Bar serves one of the best lobster rolls in town. Also known as the coastal burger, this is lobster tossed in a homemade mayo sauce and served on a toasted bun. Combine it with their other delicious seafood dishes to create your own tasting menu of sorts. Afternoon Activity: Bakery Workshop Ideally, you had already known each other inside and out before you tied the knot but learning a new skill is a unique
way to get to know each other even better. The traditional bakery Mille Feuille offers private classes for two by a Parisian chef who introduces the fine-honed skills of pastry baking. Pick your favourite French pastry and take a box home: macarons, croissants, eclairs or chouxs.
Dinner: 4 Charles Prime Rib The steakhouse 4 Charles Prime Rib gives the first impression of an old and established New York restaurant with lots of dark wood and leather, old paintings and dim lighting. Actually, it has been a rather recent addition to the city’s restaurant landscape, combining the energy of a new place with NY’s old-school restaurant charm. You will not be able to shake the feeling you somehow stumbled onto the set of The Godfather.
Entertainment: Band’s Visit One of the most beautiful love stories currently on Broadway is the tale of how laughter and music connect us all. An Egyptian police Colonel and an Israeli restaurant owner meet by chance in a little town and their joint love for music brings them together. Exceptionally talented onstage musicians sweep the audience away with lively rhythms. The Band’s Visit is the winner of 10 Tony Awards, one of which is the 2018 Tony Award for the Best Musical. Bar: Press Lounge The bar on the roof of the Ink48 Hotel offers an utterly spectacular view over Midtown. Especially during sunset, when the light from over the Hudson River shines directly onto the building facades, it’s a picture-perfect vision. Enjoy this unique sundown as the ideal end to a truly romantic day in the city. For more information on LOCALIKE New York, visit www.localike-newyork.com

Do Not Disturb
ith all the manicness that goes with planning a wedding, it’s a good idea to take a deep breath and take yourself away for an overnight pre-moon with your fiancé to just relax, recharge your batteries and remind yourself why you fell in love in the first place.
W
Stoke Place is perfect for this, a beautiful 17th century Queen Anne Mansion house that was built by royal chef Patrick Lamb in 1690 after hosting his legendary coronation feast for King James II. After being extensively refurbished, this charming country house now effortlessly combines modern luxury with classical style, creating a truly elegant and unique hideaway. Stepping into the lobby it immediately has a soothing effect, with its grey and stone colour palette, soft music and a real fire to greet you, you can already feel the stresses slowly drift from your body, leaving you ready to embrace a couple of days of just the two of you.
Our room The Alexandra Suite was just lush, perfect for a little romance, a free-standing bath took centre stage in front of the large windows that looked out over the stunning grounds, just add bubbles of both varieties and your pre-moon can begin. A King-size four poster bed, with luxury bedding, neutral tones of greys, greens and stone, along with the floor to ceiling windows gives this already spacious room a light airy feel, bringing the outside in without us having to even step outside – and as for the bathroom, double sinks – what a treat! There are 39 rooms, plus a small annex of garden cottages in total, all completely different with their own individual style and personality. After relaxing (well unpacking really, I always bring far too many
clothes!) we headed down to the Butterfly Bar where we decided to try out the signature cocktail ‘Howard’s Muddle’ named after Field Marshall, Sir George Howard, whose family owned the Stoke Place estate for 200 years. A muddle of Brokers Gin, elderflower, lime juice, mint leaves and soda, a light refreshing cocktail that we liked so much we had to have another! Wandering back to our suite it’s easy to get lost, the house is like a maize, with corridors and staircases leading to charming rooms you didn’t know were there, including a large lounge that is good enough for Royalty dotted with regal sofas and chairs, a large chestnut chesterfield, original wooden floor and of course a large feature fireplace, the perfect place to enjoy afternoon tea, a good book or just the peace and quiet. Dinner is served in the hotel’s King & Lamb Restaurant, named after legendary royal chef Patrick Lamb who cooked for the likes of Queen Anne and King James II. The restaurant is a real treat with lavish fabrics, stunning handcrafted lighting and antique ornaments that combine seamlessly with hardwood floors and modern fixtures to create an eclectic and ambient setting that offers simple and traditional British cuisine with French flavours and cooking methods.
After perusing the menu over a glass of champagne we enjoyed starters of salmon soufflé with horseradish mayonnaise and charred cucumber, this was delicious and literally melted in the mouth. Hoisin duck breast with mango and sesame compote was literally the tenderest duck I’d ever tasted, the mango compote gave a fruity tang to the strong meaty flavours.
autumn 2018.qxp_Layout 1 02/01/2019 14:14 Page 79
Mains for both of us was the traditional 28-day dry aged Hereford beef, served with hand-cut chips and roasted vine tomatoes, the meat was so tender and flavoursome, and the vine tomatoes so sweet and juicy, definitely the right choice.
Predictably after two delicious courses I was full, but I was gently persuaded by our fabulous waiter Mark to just refresh my mouth with a serving of mint ice cream. It was divine, just like eating freshly picked mint leaves, which incidentally the mint leaves to make this ARE picked fresh from the garden. Hubby had no such qualms of being full and he chose banana sticky toffee pudding with a hazelnut praline ice cream, a delightful mixture of texture and taste that just got better with each mouthful. Each item on the menu has been carefully thought about, prepared and then cooked to perfection to give the utmost quality and experience to your dining experience.
After dinner, we retreated to our room, where after a blissful night’s sleep we returned to the restaurant for breakfast. As well as a breakfast buffet there were hot dishes to order from the menu, and just like the food the night before the full English breakfast and Eggs Royale we chose were both faultless. After breakfast there’s still time to explore, so why not grab one of the hotel’s bikes and cycle round the lake, enjoy a romantic walk
exploring the stunning parkland, or just sit by one of the windows looking out over the vast scenery before you get in your car and head back to the real world. Stoke Place really is the ideal place to escape to. A traditional, tranquil country house hotel in a beautiful setting, perfect for a premoon, mini-moon or even your actual wedding! BOOK IT
