Miracle Jelly
Fit for a Queen
Luxury British perfume house Penhaligon's has updated its "Elisabethan Rose" (£137), scent, launched in 1984, with a fresh, modern take on its classic female fragrance. A fragrance with (of course) a most commanding presence. Regal. Demanding. Imposing. And yet so perfectly at ease makes it the perfect scent for a princess on her wedding day. The majestic bottle comes with red and white details, symbols of purity, peace, love and passion. A rose blooms at the center of the bottle, in which the pale pink scent is visible.

British skincare brand Katherine Daniels have introduced Miracle Cleansing Jelly (£25) a concentrated multi-textured make-up remover and face cleanser for all skin types. Containing no water, the jelly transforms into an oil when massaged into the skin, and then into a delicate milk when emulsified with water, lifting impurities and make-up. Its sensitive formulation means it can be taken right over the eye and lip area, and is suitable for water-proof mascara, which makes it perfect for your wedding day makeup removal. www.katherinedanielscosmetics.com

HOPELESS ROMANTICS
A beautiful, romantic wedding day was the inspiration for the styled shoot that took place at Moggerhanger Park in Bedfordshire. Nicki Spendelow of FJS Photography created a classic theme of green foliage, whites and gold’s, with a hint of blush.

ara at Venue Styling by Sara, styled the stunning table layout, which featured eucalyptus, laid on white and blush chiffon runners, draping off the end and pooling gracefully on the floor. Sara set the places with charger plates, then decorative plates, cutlery and glasses supplied by Harts Food and Events. A beautiful stationery suite by Olive and Millicent complimented the venue styling perfectly, with intricate foliage detailing to the hand calligraphed invitation suite, and gold brush work to the table stationery.
Kelly wore two beautiful dresses from Allure, supplied by Kate Joseph Bridal. The first of these was an ivory, slim mermaid silhouette gown, a stunning dress with breath-taking lace detailing on the chapel length train. She then changed into an equally beautiful, A-line dress with an intricate lace bodice over an elegant champagne tulle skirt. This dress also had a beautiful back, leading down a classic ball gown skirt into another chapel length train. The groom, Dean, wore a handsome three-piece Southwold suit from the Vintage Suit Hire Company, accessorised by a mustard yellow tie and pocket square, a beautiful gold stag tie pin, and a classic gold pocket watch tucked into the pocket of the waistcoat.
The bridesmaid model Aimee wore stunning dresses from TH&TH, in beautiful tones of lilac lace and blush. Both models wore stunning hairpieces from the brilliant Exceptional Designs’ new collection, which finished the look perfectly. The stunning hairstyles for both models were created by Tash at The Grey Room, and these were complimented by the beautiful make up by Emma Morris MUA. The breathtaking bouquets and buttonhole were created by the award winning Flowers by Suzanne Randell, and included eucalyptus, lisiathus and blush and cream roses, with succulent also added in to the bridal bouquet. Suzanne also provided a beautiful foliage trail up the handrail up the stunning staircase.
No wedding is complete without a stunning wedding cake, and Nina, from the award winning Meadowsweet Cakes, created an incredibly intricate three-tiered cake, with two marbled top tiers, and a gold detailed bottom tier. This was then carefully decorated with spectacular handcrafted sugar flowers, including that extraordinary peony. The delectable artisan food platters were provided by Carpe Diem Pizzas, antipasti including meats, breads and cheeses.

Boho bride with an entrancing dreamy twist, was the concept that was being created. Our beautiful model radiated this perfectly, enticing us in with her ethereal beauty. Alluringly elegant makeup with a dewy glow and fresh finish, was then teamed with a rich burgundy lip, loosened hair and flower crown to create an edgier focal point for the look. This complimented the stunning Victorian orangery we were using as a backdrop, with both makeup looks featuring heavily in bridal trends for this year. Against the incredible romantic Italian gardens, we were able to capture the simplicity and beauty of our bride, accessorising only with a simple bouquet of seasonal cabbage roses.
Delicately laced sleeved gowns, featuring a plunging neckline, showed off a bronzed and highlighted dĂŠcolletage. By using a deeper shade of lipstick, it allows a transformation from day to evening look whilst keeping within the theme. Giving the makeup a revamp for the rest of the evening, but also a second look for the photos. The Team

How To Avoid a Wedding Day Disaster Tracy Butterfield Director of Development for NAWP and Founder of 4CWA shares her knowledge with us:
We've all seen them. The couple who found the perfect photographer in an online forum who offered a 'cheap' package. They were promised video and an album of 4000 photos, a DVD and the earth, for next to nothing. When it came to the final delivery after the wedding, if they even got one, they were totally shocked and often distraught by what they received. Next thing, they've told the press and POW! It's front page news and all over social media. It seems to happen weekly - if not daily, and it's so sad to see. Over the last few years so many scammer suppliers have surfaced, seeing couples as an easy target. They sneak into forums for the unsuspecting bride or groom to be fooled into thinking they have found the bargain of the century. Quite often they are calculated and devious, taking deposits or full payments before disappearing with the cash, leaving the couple out of pocket and with no flowers/cake/photography a week before the wedding day.
I can honestly say it upsets me to see this continue to happen when through my role at the NAWP and the 4CWA I know there are so many amazing wedding professionals out there who provide excellent services and products, and it doesn't need to be this way.
Here are my top 10 tips for choosing your wedding suppliers: 1. Don't rush in!
2. Do your research - Check their websites, social media and any brochures, price lists or packages as well as testimonials. If it doesn't seem possible, or you get a gut feeling that all is not well – stop and walk away.
3. Check availability – they could already be booked on your wedding day
4. Arrange a meeting or call – see samples, previous services or products, even if in a portfolio. 5. Ask them if they have insurance and get a copy, check any extra costs like their travel. Ask for their payment terms.
6. Ask them what their contingency plans are – for example; do they have another supplier lined up should they be ill or unable to attend, or if they drop the cake? 7. Have they worked at the church, site or venue before and know what is and is not allowed. For example, some venues do not allow fireworks unless they are silent, some venues won't allow the DJ to use smoke machines. 8. Have they booked other weddings on the same day as yours? With travel, is that still doable?
9. Like all very important purchases; make a shortlist and once you have decided to book your chosen supplier, get a contract and read it! Check the terms and conditions for payments, cancellations or postponements. This not only covers you as a couple, it also covers the supplier and shows that they care.
10. Have they entered any Industry or Business awards, been shortlisted,
finalists or winners. This should be shown on their websites, social media or email signatures. Have they been recognised for their work? Of course you could always enlist a Wedding Planner and use their expertise to save you time and money.
We are very fortunate to have amazing, talented and caring wedding professionals in the UK, do your research and your special day will be fabulous!
Not all wedding suppliers must be part of a professional body to be trustworthy, however if they are it's a good sign. Here are a few to look out for: National Association of Wedding Professionals Incorporated Society of Musicians UK Association of Wedding Planners SWPP Guild of Photographers British Florist Association Institute of Professional Florists AIC Association of Independent Celebrants FSB British Sugarcraft Association The Four Counties Wedding Awards

South African Love
Charlene and Jay were married on 13th February 2018 at Mont Rochelle, Franschhoek in South Africa
summer 2018.qxp_Layout 1 26/05/2018 19:36 Page 47
How did you meet? We met at a work cricket event, had a date a week later and after that 1st date we knew it was meant to be.
How did the proposal happen? It was our 4 year anniversary weekend and we were getting ready at home for a weekend away in London when Jay gave me an anniversary card where he had said the kindest and most loving words which then lead to asking me to marry him. Jay was meant to read the card to me but was too nervous and let me read it before he realised. We then spent the rest of the day celebrating in Green Park with a picnic and some pink bubbles Where did the wedding take place? Mont Rochelle, Franschhoek, South Africa – the most stunning place in the world What did the bride wear? Caroline Castigliano, Tertia gown
What did the rest of the Bridal party wear? Bridesmaids wore full length sky blue Maids to Measure gowns. Best men and groom wore Hackett grey chequered blazer with blue GANT chinos and a Reiss pink tie. What was your theme? Romantic garden party
Describe your cake. 5 tiers of cheesy deliciousness, dressed to look like a cake and decorated with fruit. Something Blue? A blue garter borrowed from a friend which she wore at her wedding and her Mum before her.
49
summer 2018.qxp_Layout 1 26/05/2018 19:36 Page 48
What were the highlights? The emotion of the whole day. Jay's face, his little squeal and hug after we were married, everyone else's joy and emotion and the first dance to Mumford and Sons There Will be Time, lost in our own world. Your best buy? The wedding planner! Cara made everything stress free, beautiful and was worth every penny. Outside of that it was the food and wine which were all incredible How did it end? On the dancefloor to Mumford and sons’s’ lover of the lights, begging the DJ to carry on!
Is there anything you wish you’d done differently? I'm sure this is the same answer for everyone, but the only thing we wish was that we had more time to take a breath and sit back and take it all in before time ran out and it was all over.
Where did you go on honeymoon? As we were married in South Africa we had a double honeymoon. We started in Arathusa Safari Lodge in Sabi Sands and then travelled for almost a day to Milaidhoo in Maldives as it was a dream of ours to stay in a water villa. Both venues couldn’t have been more perfect for what we were looking for.

Mediterranean Marriage Debora and Davide were married on 7th October 2017 at Aiyanna, Ibiza
summer 2018.qxp_Layout 1 26/05/2018 19:36 Page 51
How did you meet? We met in London, through mutual friends.
Where did the wedding take place? The wedding took place at Aiyanna, Ibiza. It was closed to the public, and transformed into a stunning wedding venue, that overlooked the beautiful turquoise sea. Guests sat under the shade of the palm trees and the iconic colourful barriletes. What did the bride wear? I wore a gorgeous Ad-lib style dress made by an Ibizan designer.
What did the rest of the Bridal party wear? They wore informal clothes, which were perfect for the ceremony and party on the beach.
What was the theme? We decided to hire a florist to set up a nice, modern and fresh altar using lots of greenery, we then asked a friend to make us two special cushions, which we used on both our seats. The seats were arranged to overlook the sea whilst Davide and I sat on the higher part of the decking. The scenery was beautiful with the turquoise of the sea, palm trees and Aiyanna’s iconic colourful barriletes.

summer 2018.qxp_Layout 1 26/05/2018 21:14 Page 52
Describe your cake We didn’t have a traditional cake; we had Aiyanna´s special Passion Fruit Cheesecake, which was delicious! Something Blue? Davide’s jacket.
What was the format of your day? Our ceremony was in Italian hosted by Melchior, from Ibiza Ceremony. It lasted for around 25 minutes starting at 16.30h with a welcome drink; I was accompanied down the aisle by two best men – both Davide’s friends originally from Italy. What song did you walk down the aisle to? The band we had played the song “Here, there, everywhere” by the Beatles. Your best buy? I think my shoes, handmade in Ibiza.
How did it end? Drinks and canapés were served for around an hour and a half after the ceremony whilst we had the opportunity to take pictures. The menu consisted of three starters, which we wanted our guests to share, and one individual main course. This was followed by dessert and a glass of champagne for the toast. The service at Aiyanna Ibiza was impeccable; the team were very attentive, professional and most of all very friendly. The band started to play again, firstly with our first dance song and then a mixed play list of songs for everyone to celebrate until 2am. Is there anything you wish you’d done differently? No, it was just perfect. Where did you go on honeymoon? Coming soon…We are still planning our honeymoon!

A Midsummer’s Night Dream Emily and Joseph were married on 24th June 2017 (Midsummer’s Day) at Courteenhall Estate in Northamptonshire.
summer 2018.qxp_Layout 1 26/05/2018 19:37 Page 55
How did you meet? We met at school when we joined the same sixth form in 2007. We were in the same friendship group and very close friends but we were both in relationships so there was no romantic link until we both returned from university single in 2012.
How did the proposal happen? We had planned the holiday of lifetime for September 2015 to Las Vegas, Miami & The Bahamas and unbeknown to me, Joe had decided he was going to propose when we booked in the January. We had a day trip planned to the Grand Canyon in a helicopter whilst we were in Vegas so Joe took the opportunity to propose whilst taking in the spectacular views on the skywalk. It was one of those standstill moments in life where it feels like it’s just the two of you and I just burst into tears!
Where did the wedding take place? The Wedding took place in the grounds of Courteenhall Estate- we got married in the Church and then walked down to the house and marquee. We had the most beautiful weather so could have all the sides of the marquee open and make the most of the longest day of the year.
What did the bride wear? I wore a dress by Pronovias. I wanted a dress that had the wow factor without being over the top and I certainly found it. To hear your groom describe you as “the most beautiful he’s ever seen you” definitely reiterated that I’d picked the right dress! What did the rest of the Bridal party wear? The Groomsmen all wore three piece suits from Debenhams and my bridesmaid wore dresses I had made based on a design I found and fell in love with way in advance. It was important to me for my Bridemaids to feel as special and glamourous as I did.
What was your theme? We didn’t have a specific theme- my favourite colour is Burnt Orange so I wanted to incorporate that colour in subtle ways and having a Summer wedding seemed perfect. We then found that Sage Green complimented Orange and wanted lots of White to balance those two colours out especially flower wise.

summer 2018.qxp_Layout 1 26/05/2018 21:00 Page 56
Our Reception theme was loosely based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream due to the day we chose to get married and we incorporated that into our table plan.
Describe your cake My Mum made our cake and she did the most amazing job- we had three tiers- Fruit cake, Lemon cake and Madeira. We had a more detailed bottom tier and two smaller tiers with the top tier incorporating our hint of Orange. As my Mum and a couple of other family members are Gluten Intolerant, she made the cake Gluten Free so everyone could enjoy a piece and it didn’t hang around- I didn’t even get a piece of my own Wedding Cake!
Something Blue? I chose both of our Brother’s Girlfriends to represent my Something Blue as I wanted to incorporate them into our day but didn’t want loads of Bridesmaids. They both wore beautiful blue dresses and I bought them each a corsage and they read out a poem in Church. What were the highlights? The whole day was made up of lots of different highlights but getting to marry my best friend was the best highlight for me. The bubble you’re in on your wedding day makes you giddy and it’s such a special feeling. Myself and Joe just wanted to have fun and for all of our guests to relax and enjoy the day.
Your best buy? Flip flops! There’s nothing worse than tired aching feet so providing flip flops for myself and all of our female guests meant everyone could dance all night long- even the Groom rocked a pair!! How did it end? The day ended far too quickly! As the last song played, the majority of our guests were singing and dancing on the dancefloor before merrily filtering out to the Vintage Red London Buses we had hired to take them back to Milton Keynes. Myself and Joe had a complimentary room provided by the Venue so we headed back there very drunk in love before enjoying a beautiful breakfast the next morning.
Is there anything you wish you’d done differently? It sounds cheesy but not a thing! I really enjoyed planning my wedding and was determined not to be a Brideszilla or stress on the day and I really think that worked in our favour. Once the day comes, there’s nothing more to do than enjoy it. Having all the people you love in one place is an amazing feeling and I wanted to make sure I made the most of every single moment. My only regret is that we can’t do it all over again!
Where did you go on honeymoon? We jetted off to Sri Lanka for 8 nights and then The Maldives for 7 nights. We wanted a combination of activity and relaxation so picked the perfect locations.

Marriage at The Manor Kristen and Tim were married on 31st December 2017 (NYE) at Hampton Manor, Hampton–in-Arden.
summer 2018.qxp_Layout 1 26/05/2018 19:37 Page 59
How did you meet? We met at Tim’s CrossFit gym called Middle Kingdom Fitness in Beijing. An avid reader of LumDimSum (my food & lifestyle blog) Tim had invited me along in the hope that I’d promote the gym. After a glowing review and becoming a regular CrossFitter, I invited Tim to a Halloween party where Tim dressed as a sea horse, which worked its magic and won me over.
How did the proposal happen? Tim and I had been dating for about three years, so I can’t say the proposal was completely unexpected, but I didn’t expect it to happen when it did. We had planned our very first holiday together to Sri Lanka earlier that summer and I had actually thought that maybe Tim might propose at some point during our holiday. He didn’t, but ended up proposing a few months later upon my return from a month of intense work travel and a nightmare 8-hour delayed flight. I was almost passing out from exhaustion and I just remember Tim rummaging through his sock drawer and wondering what on earth he was trying to look for. After a few minutes and feeling drunk with sleep, he came over to the bedside on one knee and proposed then and there. It was very intimate and heartfelt and it was such a special ring – a ring he knew had caught my eye by a jewellery designer in Hong Kong, which was customised to add diamonds into the ring’s intricate geometric design.
Where did the wedding take place? I should preface this venue selection decision by first explaining our background. While Tim is from the UK, I am from California and we both met and live in Beijing, China. We considered many different destinations for our wedding – from a winery in Napa Valley to a destination wedding in Southeast Asia, but I have a fascination with old, European architecture and once we announced our engagement, it was quick for me to decide that I wanted to have a Downton Abbey-esque wedding in the English countryside (it’s my favorite show). Hampton Manor was exactly the venue I dreamed of.
What did the bride wear? I was so lucky to find a custom-designed dress by iconic designer Inbal Dror. Intricately beaded with lovely lace detail down the sleeves, it was such a romantic design and truly the most beautiful wedding dress I’d ever seen. What did the rest of the Bridal party wear? For my beautiful bridesmaids, I found flowing deep navy silk dresses (Stone Cold Fox) with a touch of black lace detail and I gifted each of them black fur scarves to keep them warm during outdoor photographs. What was your theme? With a winter wedding in mind, I wanted a timeless and classic feel to the design, flower arrangements and décor. Nothing flashy or anything to detract from the already gorgeous wedding venue, I kept the floral arrangements in tones of green and grey with an abundance of eucalyptus, brunia and thistle for a touch of dark navy to match the bridesmaids’ navy dresses and groomsmen’s suits. Since I am ethnically Chinese and because Tim and I met and still live in Beijing, we also wanted to incorporate some Chinese touches throughout the wedding. After months of research, we were able to find a Chinese string quartet from Birmingham Conservatoire that could play a repertoire of Chinese songs to accompany a Chinese tea ceremony that was incorporated into our wedding ceremony. While traditionally the Chinese Tea Ceremony is done at home on the morning of her wedding, we wanted to incorporate this tradition into our ceremony for all of our guests to witness as a symbol of respect, love, and gratitude to our elders by serving tea side-byside to first our grandparents and then to our parents. In all of our self-made stationary, we also incorporated the design of a golden Chinese window screen into each
61
summer 2018.qxp_Layout 1 26/05/2018 21:17 Page 60
piece. I’m most proud of the pocket in our wedding program with golden tissues “For Happy Tears”. We also gifted every guest a Chinese take-away box for their wedding favor with a slick pair of chopsticks and a note that read “We look forward to sharing many more meals together with you. Love, Kristen & Tim”. Inside, we included a homemade flapjack (baked by Tim himself!) alongside a “Wear your Heart on your Sleeve” bracelet by The Somerville Foundation – supporting young people and adults born with a heart condition like Tim’s. Describe your cake Rather than getting a generic wedding cake, we ordered an assortment of tarts, cakes & rich dark chocolate brownies from a little boutique bakery in Knowle called The Bread Collection.
What were the highlights? Since every detail was managed flawlessly by the Hampton Manor team, I was completely worry-free from start to finish! All of my attention was devoted to savoring every minute I had with beloved friends and family. I’ll always remember walking down the aisle and making eye contact first with Tim and looking around the room and seeing the faces of my closest friends and family. I almost burst into tears just walking into that room! How did it end? With a toast and party popper salute; marking the start of our married life together and 2018!
Is there anything you wish you’d done differently? No, we really had a dream wedding. With so much out there in the world of wedding planning, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and get carried away (thanks to Pinterest!), but it’s important to remember what really matters to you both as individuals and as a couple and let that guide your decisions throughout the wedding planning process. Where did you go on honeymoon? Being over in the UK we wanted to make the most of the time with our family and friends, especially as we had so many guests who’d travelled from abroad for our wedding. We had a minimoon in London and are planning our honeymoon for a later date.

Desert Dreams
The Desert Palm Dubai
L
ounging by your own private pool, in the mid morning sunshine, hidden away from the outside world in a little haven of peace and tranquillity, is exactly how it feels when you stay at The Desert Palm Hotel in Dubai. Just minutes away from the airport, and a mere 15 minutes from the buzz of Dubai, this intimate boutique hotel is set amidst a 160-acre polo estate, complete with over 400 horses and with just 38 luxurious rooms, suites and villas, it is just perfect for a honeymoon or romantic getaway. An oasis of lush greenery, polo fields, and stables, all combine together to create this elegant retreat. With regular polo matches taking place, this really is the ideal escape to begin your life as Mr and Mrs.
Some rooms have views over the polo fields, which is a truly magical experience, you can sit on your own private terrace, a glass of chilled champagne in your hand gazing out over the fields as a polo match takes place, it really is spectacular. Not only did we have these views we also had our own private courtyard complete with pool, sun loungers, dining area and outdoor rain shower and that was just the outside. Inside is elegantly styled with a vast living space,
complimented with dark wood, marble floors and neutral surroundings. A small kitchen area complete with a Dallmayr Coffee machine, JING tea selection and a fully stocked minibar completes the living space. The same neutral and dark wood tones carry on into the bedroom and the crisp white sheets add that extra bit of luxe. The bathroom is marble, with his and her sinks, a large bath and of course separate shower - big enough for a whole family to fit!
All rooms in the villa have floor to ceiling sliding doors so you can laze in bed, on the sofa or in the bath and just gaze out over the pool.
And laze we did, not inside, but outside in the gorgeous sunshine, dipping in and out of the pool, until it was time to walk through the beautiful hotel gardens to Epicure, the brasserie style restaurant, that overlooks the shimmering turquoise waters of the infinity pool, to indulge in a Desert Palm Jewel Afternoon Tea. A selection of the most delicious, fresh sandwiches, that included grilled vegetables on a brioche bun, sundried tomato and artichoke cheese mousse on white bread and home smoked salmon on a bagel and then there were the
summer 2018.qxp_Layout 1 26/05/2018 19:42 Page 65
mini french pastries - mini doughnut with custard stuffing, fruit mousse cone, fruit tartlet and of course freshly made scones with jam and clotted cream. Not only did it live up to it’s name and look like a jewel it tasted like one too, and as for service – it was impeccable.
Epicure not only offers afternoon tea but also all day dining. Whether it’s a la carte breakfast, or brasseriestyle classics that include artisan cheeses, home smoked meats, wood fired pizzas and luxurious pastries and desserts. Could it get any more perfect? It certainly could. Dinner was served in Rare, Desert Palms signature dining restaurant. Seated on the outdoor terrace overlooking the retreat’s polo field, proved to be a memory-making romantic dining experience. The food was divine, a tasting menu with such things as seafood ceviche, pumpkin gnocchi and norwegian salmon all served with matching wines recommended by our highly knowledgeable sommelier – textures and tastes were a pleasure on the palette and the ambience was magical. A meal here is one to take your time over, savor each mouthful as you gaze in the distance at the glittering Dubai skyline.
Dessert was just as delectable, a baked marble cheesecake that melted in the mouth, followed by artisan cheeses washed down with a glass of port. Walking back to our villa, it’s hard to imagine you’re in Dubai; it is just so peaceful and serene a real arabian hideaway that we just couldn’t get enough of.
Peace and serenity isn’t just limited to lying by the pool or in your villa, there’s also Samana spa, a place to retreat to and enjoy a relaxing treatment or if you’re feeling a little more energetic you can always visit the fully equipped gym or try out the different fitness classes that are on offer during your stay. I wasn’t feeling energetic though and treated myself to a Samana Aromatherapy Signature massage that had me all too easily drifting into a gentle sleep as the therapists hands gently massaged essential oils into my skin, leaving me feeling completely rejuvenated.
Not only is the Desert Palm perfect for newlyweds it’s also ideal for a destination wedding, with so many gorgeous parts of the estate available for you to hold your wedding in, whether it’s by the fountain, outside on one of the tree covered terraces, on the vast lawn space, the choice is endless and the end result priceless. The Desert Palm is said to be one of the finest honeymoon hotels in Dubai, and we can see why – It ticks all the right boxes and more – from the accommodation, to the polo fields to the exquisite cuisine this really is an Arabian dream, one you need to experience at least once in your life.
