AWV offers the Alternative Getting Married and looking for an alternative form of transport to get you to the church on time – then look no further than AWV (Alternative Wedding Vehicles) who offer exactly that in the form of a Classic British Morgan in Racing Green called Walt, a Ducati Diavel called Tuco and a Classic refurbed VW Beetle called Jesse, all of which will add the WOW factor to your special day. All three vehicles are lovingly cared for and owned by Chris Mckimm who decided to invest in the vehicles when he and his future wife couldn’t find anything suitable for their own upcoming nuptials - Chris told us “Getting a vehicle a bit different from the norm is a bit of a challenge, so I thought why not just buy the one I want.” “Arriving at your wedding is a seriously exciting moment, so it makes sense to choose a form of transport that suits your style, which is where we come in if you are looking for something away from the classic wedding cars” Whether you choose Walt, Tuco or Jesse one thing’s for sure, you’ll certainly have your guests talking about something other then your ‘Dress’!

Champagne Celebrations Sarah & David
Sarah and David were married on 16th April 2016 at a Champagne House in the village of Oger in France.
weddingsummer2016.qxp_Layout 1 15/07/2016 18:36 Page 51
How did you meet? In a classic ‘six degrees of separation’ scenario – I knew a very good friend of Dave’s sister, who invited me to stay with them for the weekend in Bournemouth. It was her birthday and I met Dave at a celebratory BBQ. We spent the entire night taking the mickey out of each other and a few weeks later, he asked for my number. Our first date was at Portland Bill Lighthouse, and we both remember looking at each other trying very hard not to say ‘I love you’ as it was so soon!
How did the proposal happen? Dave took me for a picnic at the top of Box Hill, on a random Monday we had off work (after watching Bradley Wiggins win the Hour Record at the Olympic Velodrome). It’s a special place for us as Dave is a great road cyclist and we watched the Olympic cycling road race there together in 2012. He was behaving slightly strangely in the morning, but I put it down to a hangover after a few G&T’s the night before! We sat and admired the view in the sunshine for a while then he announced he needed the toilet and disappeared off into a bush…it turned out that he’d put the ring into the pocket of some rather tight skinny jeans and he had to get out of sight to rescue it ready to pop the question! Suffice to say, when he did, I was totally speechless and burst into tears before saying yes! He’d packed the picnic, so produced a bottle of very nice Champagne from the cool-bag which we enjoyed whilst calling our friends and family to share the good news.
Where did the wedding take place? Thanks to the amazing Jenna from Grape Escapes, we tied the knot at a Champagne House (Champagne Henry de Vaugency) in the little village of Oger, just outside Epernay in the heart of the Champagne region. The owners, Pasal and Delphine were incredible hosts and made the venue look so beautiful – it was the first wedding to have taken place there, but I have a feeling it won’t be the last! We took 25 of our closest friends and family on a weekend road trip! We travelled together and it made the whole experience really special. Jenna also arranged exclusive use of a beautiful hotel in Epernay for us for the weekend.
weddingsummer2016.qxp_Layout 1 15/07/2016 18:36 Page 52
What did the bride wear? An illusion neckline gown in ‘Champagne’ by Kenneth Winston, with Oscar de la Renta shoes.
What did the rest of the Bridal party wear? My two Maids of Honour wore one shoulder Dessy dresses in cobalt blue, with Carvela gold sandals and matching bags.
What was your theme? Champagne was the inspiration for the whole weekend. We got our invitations from Cartalia, which looked like the ornate gates found on so many of the Champagne houses in the region. We used Champagne bottles and corks for the décor in the dining room, and used a Jeroboam Champagne bottle as our guest book for people to sign. Our colours were cobalt blue and antique gold, with the cobalt being inspired by the kilt Dave wore on the big day. It’s his family tartan and he’s the first Farrell to get married in it for three generations, so it was a proud moment! Something Blue? My garter, which was a present from my Grannie
What were the highlights? Driving into Epernay the day before the wedding and hearing everybody gasp as they saw the vineyards stretch for miles into the distance. Definitely saying our vows to each other – we had written them on the beach on our 5th anniversary. And having both my Nan and Grannie travel to France with us - they are both 95 and incredibly close to both of us. They had a great time and are still talking about it!
Your best buy? Not so much of a buy as a find, but it was definitely Jenna from Grape Escapes, who turned our vision for the weekend into reality. Nothing was too much trouble, she pre-empted almost all of our questions and was a total superstar on the day. We couldn’t have done it without her! How did it end? In the hotel Champagne bar in the early hours of the morning!
Is there anything you wish you’d done differently? I wish we could have won the lottery and spent a week in Champagne with all of our favourite people, rather than a weekend!
Where did you go on honeymoon? We went on a ‘minimoon’ to Budapest straight after the wedding for a few days of sunshine and relaxation. We are off to Grenada for two weeks of five-star luxury later in the year, and we can’t wait!

Royal Wedding Alana & Nathan
Alana and Nathan were married on 25th April 2016 at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire
weddingsummer2016.qxp_Layout 1 15/07/2016 18:38 Page 55
How did you meet? Nathan and I met in San Diego, California while I was working on my Masters degree and he was working for ESPN. Neither of us was from the area, so it was fun to have a partner-in-crime to explore the city with! Our first date was at a San Diego Padres baseball game! Nathan was trying to impress me being an Englishman with baseball knowledge. Little did he know my father was a baseball player and I knew more than he did! Girl power!
How did the proposal happen? Nathan proposed on the Big Island of Hawaii and I honestly didn’t see it coming! We took a breathtaking helicopter tour in the morning, and relaxed in the sun in the afternoon. Nathan told me he had planned for us to go see an educational talk about sea turtles before dinner (I like that kind of stuff!). We were picked up by a golf buggy, which drove us to a surprise private dinner on the beach, complete with ukulele player! Believe it or not, I still didn’t think anything of it because he is always full of surprises! At sunset, ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ started playing, and Nathan got down on one knee and proposed! It was such a magical day! Where did the wedding take place? Blenheim Palace
What did the bride wear? We bought my dress from Vera Wang in London. What did the rest of the Bridal party wear?
The bridesmaids wore dresses from Wtoo by Watters, champagne sashes by David’s Bridal, shoes by Ivanka Trump, and bracelets from Vivienne Westwood. The men wore morning suits by Moss Bros, the page boy outfits were from M&S with converse sneakers, and flower girl dresses were ordered from Etsy! What was your theme? Our wedding didn’t have an actual theme, but I knew I wanted to use shades of purple and gold as these were my University’s colours in America! Also, I love flowers so we used them as our focal point for decorations and they turned out beautifully. Since we are big sports fans we wanted hints of this throughout the day, but we didn’t want it to be the main theme. Nathan and the groomsmen each had one baseball and one cricket ball cufflink, our tables were named after our favorite sports teams, and the male wedding guests each received a £5 sports bet as their table gift. Each guest also had a time hidden on their name card, and whoever was the closest to the time of the best men’s speech won two tickets to a sports event of their choice! The party after dinner did have more of a theme. We wanted it to be completely different from the rest of our wedding, so we created an enchanted mystical garden with a nod to Willy Wonka and Alice in Wonderland. Describe your cake The cake was from Rosalind Miller Cakes and it was six tiers. We kept the top tier and displayed the cake in the Saloon so that guests could see when they entered. 57
weddingsummer2016.qxp_Layout 1 15/07/2016 18:38 Page 56
Something Blue? I had a small Seattle Seahawks (American football team) charm on a garter that I had on my leg for the ceremony.
What were the highlights? For me it was when the doors opened and I saw all of our friends, family and all of the flowers. The orchestra was playing and Nathan was waiting for me at the end - that was an amazing feeling. I also loved riding in the horse and carriage (one of the surprises!) back to our guests, and seeing the Great Hall all decorated. I guess just seeing the whole day come together and noticing all of the little details that we had thought of throughout the day. And the band and the party were amazing. So pretty much the whole day I guess! Your best buy? Besides my dress and shoes?! This is a difficult question, because even the little things made the day really special. We thought the horse and carriage added an extra wow factor and helped make some amazing photos! The flowers by Gill Milton and the cake by Rosalind Miller were incredible and they were both wonderful to work with! How did it end? The day ended with our whimsical party with Alistair Griffin (Fame Academy) on the mic. He was SO great and our friends still talk about him and the band! The dessert table was filled with brightly
colored meringues, macaroons and sweets and we had small snacks being served for those who didn’t fill themselves at dinner. At the end of the night, Nathan and I were picked up by a Rolls Royce Phantom - a perfect ending to a magical day! Is there anything you wish you’d done differently? I think it all went really well, but in the limo on the way to the Blenheim, I realized my bridesmaids and I forgot my wedding dress at the hotel!!!! We ended up having one of my friends bring it with them to the Palace. Good thing I’m a really calm person!
Where did you go on honeymoon? I didn’t know where we were going on honeymoon until we arrived at the airport! Nathan surprised me with a trip to Gili Lankanfushi in the Maldives where we received an upgrade of a lifetime! They put us in the IR private reserve, which is the biggest over-water villa in the world! After we left Maldives, we flew to Kenya and stayed at Mahali Mzuri, Sir Richard Branson’s safari camp in the Masai Mara. As an animal lover, this was an amazing experience! People always ask which one I enjoyed more, but they were so different that I can’t compare! We are so lucky we were able to do both!

We had a few days in Portugal in August 2015. It was the Friday night and we both got dressed up to go to a little boutique type restaurant the hotel had recommended. After dinner Scott held my hand across the table and I could feel him pushing something into it. I looked down and there was this beautiful engagement ring. I put it on immediately and was ecstatic. Rang my mother to tell her the news. Scott then turned to me and said “is that a yes then? It’s a yes?” Where did the wedding take place? The Chester Grosvenor
What did the bride wear? A Justin Alexander beaded, strapless gown from Cheshire Brides
What did the rest of the Bridal party wear? I had six bridesmaids in total so I wanted something they all felt comfortable in. I went with the
twist and wrap style dress for the older ones so they could wear it as suited and the two little ones had ivory dresses and a sash in the same material as the twist and wrap dresses. The boys were in full morning suits, I like the traditional look. What was your theme? Vintage pink, ivory and champagne.
Something Blue? I had a blue bow on my garter.

weddingsummer2016.qxp_Layout 1 15/07/2016 18:39 Page 60
What were the highlights? It’s hard to say, as the day was just wonderful - the Chester Grosvenor took care of everything so the day ran flawlessly. But possibly stepping outside the hotel to a huge crowd by the horse and carriage and then a lovely ride as man and wife to Chester Cathedral.
Your best buy? It would have to be either my Photographer Lesley Meredith, she blew me away when she sent the preview shots, or my flowers, they were done by a friend of Scott’s, Karl Walsh - I was amazed when I saw how beautiful they were. How did it end? Perfectly. We danced the night away with some of our closest friends.
Is there anything you wish you’d done differently? Probably not. We only had six months between setting the date and getting married, so I didn’t have time to mess about over things. I had an idea of what I wanted and just went with it. When we went to look round the Chester Grosvenor they showed us a plan of how the day could be - it was basically my perfect day ven down to the horse and carriage. Where did you go on honeymoon? We went to the Park Hyatt Mallorca. We actually went a few weeks after we were married as my horse had an awful accident three weeks before the wedding, so he was in hospital in Liverpool for the wedding and, although he came home soon after we were married, he was too poorly to leave. Thankfully he’s getting better now.

Palm trees swaying in the breeze, the sound of the sea gently lapping on the sandy beach, lying in an open air hot tub, glass of champagne in your hand, these are the moments we only dream about - but for us this dream has now become a reality at The Magdalena Grand Beach & Golf Resort. We are on the Caribbean Island of Tobago and staying in the island’s premier hotel. Many people say once you’ve experienced Tobago and Caribbean hospitality you’ll keep coming back and I can see why. Each room at The Magdalena Grand Beach Resort has a panoramic sea view, with suites (which we were lucky enough to find ourselves in) all having hot tubs overlooking the ocean. Once you’ve worn yourself out relaxing in the hot tub, why not use the little energy you have left to make your way down to the beach and catch some of the suns rays whilst loungeing on one of the daybeds, sipping, of course, a rum punch (no visit to Tobago is complete without a rum punch or two) - speak to a Tobagon and they will tell you their rum punch is the best in the Caribbean!!!! If the beach isn’t your thing there are 3 pools to choose from all overlooking the ocean. One is an infinity pool, hidden from view and only for adults which is just what honeymoons are made for! Breakfast at The Magdalena is a real treat as you sit on the pool terrace, enjoying a variety of fresh produce including made to order omelettes, french toast, pancakes, pastries, fresh fruit, and so much more, and if the sunshine on the terrace is too much first thing in the morning then you can venture inside to the large air conditioned restaurant. Restaurants on the island certainly tantalise your tastebuds, offering a variety of dishes from local to Caribbean, European to American and, of course always include fresh fish – there are menus to suit every craving, palette and budget. The Fish Pot, a lovely little fish restaurant with a menu of whichever fish has been caught that day, is not to be missed, as is a visit to Kariwak village. especially if you want to sample some truly authentic Caribbean food with dishes including savoury pumpkin and Mahi Mahi in a coconut herb sauce , the food is fresh, home grown and tasty. For a real Tobaggon experience you need to visit The Blue Crab Restaurant which is run by Alison and her husband Kenneth (chef), this is no ordinary husband and wife team as from the moment you arrive, Alison will have you become a member of her family regailling stories from her life, the restaurant and so much more – if you walk out of here not in love with the place and Alison then maybe you’re not human – and the food, well Kenneth does as he’s told and stays in the kitchen and produces some of the most delicious cuisine, including Fried Flying Fish in a mild curry flavour batter one of his specialities. As for their Rum Punch it certainly packs a PUNCH!!!!
weddingsummer2016.qxp_Layout 1 15/07/2016 19:41 Page 70
Tobago is an island of two personalities – the calm Caribbean side and the slightly more agitated Atlantic coastline. The Magdalena is on the Atlantic side but venture to Pigeon Point Heritage Park and you’ll experience the clear calm waters of the Caribbean side – Pigeon Point is an idyllic setting and one of the main places people come to get married. With the sun kissed turquoise waters, and soft white sand surrounded by palm trees, this really is paradise – Come and spend a day here lying on the beach, sipping cocktails, mixing with the locals, enjoy a little shopping and for the more adventurous how about some diving, jet skiing or kite surfing, and to finish the day just sit with a cool drink and watch the world drift by until its time to watch a magnificent sunset with the one you love. The Magdalena is not just a hotel it also boasts 4 resturatants that non residents can use including the fine dining Kalina Restaurant, a Caribbean fusion restaurant with its soft romantic music and welcoming staff this is the ideal restaurant to visit whilst with the one you love – this is Caribbean cuisine at its very best, a real treat, including a vast selection of cocktails and an extensive wine list to choose from. The whole dining experience starts with a tasty appetiser and dishes that are just delightful, such as warmed baked tomato and mozzarella cheese - a dish that I have to say is so simple yet so utterly divine, and the roasted double lamb chop that not only looked like a piece of art but tasted like a masterpiece too. There are two things not to be missed if you visit Tobago, the first is a trip to the Rainforest, and the other a Catamaran island Cruise. The rainforest spans 14,000 acres and is at the highest point on the island – What our lovely guide Darlington didn’t know about the flora, fauna, insects and animals that make the rain forest their home isn’t worth knowing – as we trekked through the forest I half expected to see Tarzan swinging towards us through the trees – Humming birds, the national bird Cocorico beautiful vibrant butterflies and dare I say it – spiders - were only a few of the delights we encountered. The greenery is greener than green, and the silence, apart from birds tweeting and Darlington talking is so serene. It’s time to sail away with “The Island Girl” a 43ft Catamaran that will have you sailing Tobago’s scenic coastline, whilst basking in the sun either on the decks, or if you prefer relaxing in the shaded cockpit – it is in here that you can watch Danny, the skipper and his team sail the boat, play excellent hosts to
weddingsummer2016.qxp_Layout 1 15/07/2016 19:41 Page 71
everyone on board and observe them catching fresh fish for lunch. We sail to Cotton Bay Cove, a cove that is serene and unspoilt and is only accessible by boat. It is here you can try your hand at snorkeling or swimming in the clear blue seas, or if you prefer you can take a stroll hand in hand on the beach (you do have to swim to the beach first though!) Any drink you fancy is flowing all day and the choice is vast. everything from bottled water to scotch, wine and, of course, a Tobagan cruise wouldn’t be authentic without some Rum Punch. Lunch is a selection of the fresh fish the guys have caught, chicken, salads and garlic bread - all freshly prepared by Danny and his team, (these guys are brilliant). Leaving Cotton Bay we sail to our next stop Emerald Cove – the name speaks for itself with Emerald waters and even more marine life to enjoy. Caribbean music plays in the background as we sail back to Mt Irvine. As we lounge on the deck enjoying the lapping of the water and the slight rocking of the boat, a pod of dolphins decide to swim alongside the boat – it truly is a magical experience. Back at The Magdalena a cocktail or two in the Tavaco lounge is a must before heading to dinner - this time in The Pembois Restaurant, buffet style dining with a menu that changes every night with a selection of both Caribbean and International specialties. If you are in Tobago on a Sunday evening then you need to go to Sunday School!!! Not the church hymn singing variety but a weekly street party where locals want to dance with you, food stalls make your mouth water, and steel bands and live singers will have you at least tapping your feet before the night ends. Tobago is an untouched paradise where you can do as much or as little as you want. White sandy coves, swimming in crystal clear waters, and sunsets on the beach, all go towards making it the ultimate honeymoon destination. BOOK it British Airways Holidays offers 7 nights at the 4.5* Magdalena Grand Beach & Golf Resort from £783 pp based on 2 people sharing a Deluxe Oceanfront Room on a B&B basis, including 2 complimentary rounds of golf per person (including buggy hire).
