You’re a Winner! T
he end of last year saw the Four Counties Wedding Awards Gala, of which we were very proud sponsors.
Organised by Tracy Butterfield of Appleby Events and hosted at Knebworth House in Stevenage it certainly was an evening of glitz and glamour. Bubbles on arrival, entertainment from Nouveau Jazz Trio, glitter make-up from Glitzy Forever and making sure everything ran smoothly Toastmaster John.
The venue looked stunning and this was down to the creative team at Concept Solutions Ltd. Wedding suppliers from the four counties all gathered together for a spectacular evening of delicious food, fabulous entertainment and of course awards! With the added bonus of helping raise funds for the amazing charity; ‘Wedding Wishing Well Foundation’. Naomi Thomas, founder of the charity inspired everyone with her story and just under £1,500 was raised on the night. A total of 26 awards were presented, including ‘Winner’, ‘Highly Commended’ and ‘One to Watch’. If last year’s event is anything to go by this year is going to take your breath away! Make a note in your diary nominations begin in May.

Moody Hues
Bases of black with navy, mauve and dusky shades all come together to create a look that is dark, dramatic and bold
weddingswinter2017.qxp_Layout 1 24/01/2017 08:50 Page 36
The concept for this look was dark, dramatic and bold, and inspired by interior trends, which often filter through into wedding looks. It is a look for a confident bride who isn't afraid to break with traditions.
A base of black and ink layered with navy, deep mauve and dusky shades to highlight. The tablescape includes black crockery, gold cutlery and dark, and elegant glassware. Candlelight adds a beautiful softness to this palette and brass details ensure the overall look is warm and opulent.
Seasonal foliage trailed along the table with moody blooms dotted throughout is dramatic and cost effective. The foliage is placed around the table decor to create a beautifully intertwined and expressive table runner.
weddingswinter2017.qxp_Layout 1 24/01/2017 08:51 Page 37
Watercolour is very on-trend and a subtle way to bring in pattern, texture and colour. A soft washed indigo cake is dramatic and very beautiful. This colour combination is mirrored on the stationery with white allowing the indigo watercolour to pop. A clean, simple font completes the look.
Stationery is the first visual your guests have of the day and this will give a glimpse into a day that is going to be fashion forward, bold and creative. A variety of petal sizes and shades create a beautiful style feature. Large, deep coloured petals and sweet rose buds are particularly beautiful - displayed in geometric brass vases to add edge and style.

Blush and Grey
weddingswinter2017.qxp_Layout 1 24/01/2017 08:51 Page 39
Pure and natural with a lightness of touch and sensual undertones. The sense of innocence is heightened by the lush green backdrop, abundance of British florals with creeping foliage and ripe fruit.
weddingswinter2017.qxp_Layout 1 24/01/2017 08:52 Page 40
This look is inspired by wild, overgrown English gardens where flowers grow freely. A delicate and simple palette of rich green foliage and soft grey is the epitome of 'grown-up' femininity and the perfect backdrop for summer blooms. This is a pure, natural scheme with a lightness of touch and sensual undertones.
On the table, antique silver cutlery and sparkling cut glass are tempered with contemporary organic crockery for an indulgent feel without fussiness. In contrast, flowers have escaped from their usual positions on tables or pedestals to spread across the floor, climbing and trailing up and around the table.
Dainty poppies, frilly garden roses and delicately scented sweetpea were mixed in with foliage picked from the hedgerows in a natural and romantic style, with touches of dove grey senecio foliage and silver speckled poppy heads. All the blooms were grown in Cheshire and arranged in a loose and ethereal way to add softness and romance to the table.
weddingswinter2017.qxp_Layout 1 24/01/2017 08:59 Page 41
An elegant duo of white wedding cakes is understated and chic and makes an alluring centrepiece, decorated with luscious berries and flowers.
Handwritten vellum stock is innovative and trend focused while still elegant, timeless, soft and feminine. Raw edges and black ink add an edge.
Continuity of textures and materials ensures the day feels fully co-ordinated and effortlessly styled; vellum pouches filled with a handful of dried petal confetti are displayed in antique silver trays and glass boxes. www.onestylishday.com

True Romance Nicola and Josh were married on 10th September 2016 at The Italian Villa in Poole, Dorset
weddingswinter2017.qxp_Layout 1 24/01/2017 08:59 Page 53
How did you meet? We first met 15 years ago. We lived in the same village and Josh was a waiter at the local pub. I am a bit older than him and I took the initiative and invited him out on a date. As you can imagine he was a little less mature back then and needless to say we only went out twice! Flash forward ten years from then and I happened to pop back to the village pub and by pure chance Josh was there celebrating his parents wedding anniversary. This time round he asked me out for a date and as they say “the rest is history” How did the proposal happen? Josh knows that I love Italy and he planned a surprise trip to Venice. I have been an actress for the past 12 years and my icon is Audrey Hepburn and Moon River in Breakfast at Tiffany’s is our song. On our second night he asked me to get dressed up and he took me to the Teatro La Fenice where he hired out the theatre for an hour and took me up to the Royal Box where he played Moon River and proposed with the most stunning Victorian diamond solitaire. Where did the wedding take place? We made a whole weekend of celebrations which began on the Thursday. The bridal party got ready at The Priory Hotel and the wedding took place at The Lady St. Mary Church in Wareham. The guests then took a routemaster London bus to board a private boat where we all travelled along the River Frome to The Italian Villa at Compton Acres where the reception took place.
weddingswinter2017.qxp_Layout 1 24/01/2017 08:59 Page 54
What did the bride wear? This part was easy I picked my dresses from my own boutique. I own George James Bridal Boutique in Bedford, so in theory I was spoilt for choice and most people thought I might struggle but I always knew what I wanted. I love a ball gown shape as for me it epitomises the traditional bride and I am all about fabric and tailoring. Suzanne Neville gowns have all of this in abundance and so I chose Heather which had a silk organza skirt and a lace bodice with a Bardot neckline. I must say I was very lucky and naughty and had a second dress to dance the night away in. In the evening I changed into a gorgeous tea length dress style 8800 from Justin Alexander. What did the rest of the Bridal party wear? We both liked the idea of keeping the feel to the day Italian inspired, so Josh opted for a classic, tailored three piece black dinner suit. All the groomsmen wore the same suits purchased from Claytons Menswear in Bedford and wore oyster ties and matching pocket squares. They also all had matching button holes from our amazing florist Jennifer Poynter. My mother had a beautiful oyster dress, matching coat and hat from Anne Firbank. I had four ‘official’ bridesmaids’ who were two best friends and two nieces, and my two sisters who also managed to wangle themselves into the bridal party!! I say this very fondly as they are very important to me! The colours were more or less blush and oyster and were from Mori Lee.
What was your theme? We didn’t really want to have a ‘theme’ as such but it inevitably happens in order to create cohesion for the day. What was most important for us was that we had things that we loved and that all our guests would find representative of us. We both have special places in the world and have travelled together, so with this a slight travel inspired feel tied all the elements of the wedding together. The guests all had travel documents as their invites that included passports, boat and bus boarding passes and travel money (that was later used as free vouchers for the photo booth). The guests boarded a red London double decker bus and made their way to the church where the very ‘English’ part of the wedding took place. We had an incredible gospel choir during the service and then made our way to the boat. The next part was meant to have an Irish flavour as we had a fiddler on the boat and then when we arrived at The Italian Villa we had an accordionist to set the mood along with an authentic Italian ice cream tricycle, that came all the way from our hometown of Bedford. One thing that was most important was to have very special tributes to my nephew who tragically passed away from cancer three years ago. The whole colour choice for the day was inspired by him, as his favourite colours were orange and green, so with this in mind and considering it was Autumn, it was perfect to use burnt oranges and soft pinks, golds and warm greens. As it was also my parents golden wedding anniversary we also wanted to link in all of these lovely golden hues as well. My sister had his pictures printed on the ring pillow, as he would have been our page boy and the songs picked in the church were some of his favourites. I had all my loved ones pictures in my bouquet and when we arrived at The Italian Villa there was a special table set up with an arrival cocktail called George’s Marvellous Medicine, which was a bright green vodka drink. There were large 3 ft balloons surrounding his picture that were released by the family in the evening. So really the theme of the day was inspired by family as that really is the most important thing to us and what will make the day so memorable.

Describe your cake Our cake was made by the talented Helen Whelan at Sweetness and Delight. It was an ivory five tier cake with one layer of fruit cake and two raspberry and white chocolate and two lemon curd and butter icing. Two tiers had delicate lace icing and it had hand crafted sugar icing flowers and grapes that matched the flowers in the bouquet. The special touch was a lego brick wall at the back of the cake which was another tribute to little George. Something Blue? I had a beautiful garter that my mum gave me on the morning of the wedding that also had my something old on it, which was my nan’s wedding ring which was hand sewn onto the lace.
What were the highlights? Gosh, there are almost too many to recollect. Celebrating my parents golden anniversary in the morning and having my mum put me in my dress and my dad seeing me for the first time was so special. The incredible entertainment throughout the day was fantastic and created such different atmospheres. We had a goosebump moment that no one will ever forget when one of George’s balloons just took to the skies with its weight still attached. The sun suddenly appeared with a shaft of light and it floated off during our family picture as everyone cried out “It’s George!” However, without question the highlight was saying our vows in Church. Making the commitment to the person you love and I will always treasure the very special moment as we both said “I do”.
How did it end? We wanted to leave the reception in a very traditional way so we asked the bridal party to create the arch which we went through and said goodbye to everyone before heading straight off in our car and back to our bridal suite in the boat house at The Priory Hotel in Wareham . Is there anything you wish you’d done differently? I know this sounds a bit cliché but it really was the absolute best day of our lives.

Where did you go on honeymoon? Josh has an open top sports car and we liked the romance of heading off with our ‘just married’ sign and having the freedom to stop where we pleased, so we went on a road trip. We crossed over to France and had out first stop in Saint Emillion in a chateaux just outside Bordeaux and then we continued on to the South of France. We started in Theole sur mer and explored Cannes, Nice, Monaco and Monte Carlo. We carried on adventuring into Italy, stopping off at Pisa and Portofino before heading on to Rome. Heading back home we went via Florence and Lake Como and then even managed to go canyoning in Switzerland before finally making our way back home stopping in Rouen before crossing back to England.

How did you meet? I was meeting with some mutual friends (who I didn’t know were mutual at the time, due to Jordan living in Stoke on Trent and consequently not seeing them very often!), I walked into a bar to meet them at 2am after finishing work late and this ‘random’ guy just ran over and hugged me, (it was very strange, and would usually turn me straight off, but I found it very amusing and we got talking). After an hour or so at the bar everything was closing up, so we all popped out to get some late night Pizza. One of our friends dropped a piece of his pizza on the floor and both Jordan and I ‘dived’ for it (almost bumping heads on route!) We quickly bonded over our love of food, and how food should never be thrown away! After talking for some time I offered to drive Jordan back to Stoke on Trent (obviously I had no idea it was 3 hours drive away!), Jordan found it hilarious and after finding his own way back home, messaged me in the early hours of the following morning to take ‘the mick’! We added each other on Facebook and spent hours writing ‘essays’ to each other about every single little detail in our life! (We both gave each other 20 ‘in depth’ questions to answer!) - 1 week later Jordan hired a car and drove down from Stoke to meet me for lunch. After lunch, we went to meet my Mum and her boyfriend for drinks, then headed to my Dad and his ‘girlfriends’ at the time for dinner After dinner we sat up until 5am talking, when Jordan realised he’d better race back to return his hire car for 7am! He went on holiday the next day for 2 weeks, whilst there he ran up a £1,000 phone bill calling me every night. When he arrived home 2 weeks later, he got a taxi straight from Manchester airport to my house, dropped his suitcase at mine – and never left
How did the proposal happen? We spent 9 years together before getting engaged. We always knew it was on the agenda, but we had a business to run and that had to take priority. We’d always said that we wanted to do it ‘properly’, so wanted to wait until we were able to do everything we wanted. When Jordan did propose, it was a complete surprise (that particular day for sure) - the full ‘story’ can be found here: www.mrandmrsjordan.com/the-proposal

Where did the wedding take place? Sheene Mill in Cambridgeshire (It couldn’t really be anywhere else – we are the owners) What did you wear (bride)? A large Caroline Castigliano ‘ballgown style’ dress that I had several changes made to.
What did the rest of the Bridal party wear? The bridesmaids wore a beautiful floor length champagne gold maxi dress, with an ivory lace top, low back and subtle train. The groomsmen wore a grey tails suit, an ivory waistcoat with champagne gold detailing, a champagne gold tie and pocket square to match, they each had an ivory rose (with the exception of Jordan who had a deep red rose to tie in with my flowers) and smart black shoes. What was your theme? It was a Classic, yet Glamorous theme, consisting of beautiful deep reds, champagne gold’s and ivory (with a summery twist!)
Describe your cake Sat on a beautiful champagne gold sequin table cloth, standing on its own beautifully made ‘lace effect’ icing sugar legs, it was 5 tiers of perfection, set off by a gold leaf tier, a soft lace and pearl design and absolutely stunning cascading flowers. Something Blue? I had a blue garter around the top of my leg
What were the highlights? Definitely our 8 Course Wedding Breakfast feast and the dancing until the early hours!
Is there anything you wish you’d done differently? No
Where did you go on honeymoon? We didn’t actually go on honeymoon straight away, as August is a busy time for us, we delayed it and went in November, when we were lucky enough to go to Singapore and then onto The Maldives.

Rustic Charm and Elegance Sarah and Alistair were married on 31st August 2016 at Chiesa del Carmine in Umbria, Italy
weddingswinter2017.qxp_Layout 1 24/01/2017 09:03 Page 61
How did you meet? We met in an indie nightclub, “The Venue”, in Manchester. In hindsight it’s a miracle our paths never crossed sooner. We were both born in the same hospital, grew up less than a mile apart, liked going to all the same places and studied law at the same university.
How did the proposal happen? At my parent’s home. We both live in Australia and travelled home for Christmas. A few weeks before we left Alistair booked a surprise weekend away in a spa hotel for my birthday and arranged champagne and strawberries in the room. It was all very out of character, as he's not the romantic type and we had talked about marriage a lot in the year leading up to it, so I was certain it was going to happen then. Much to my surprise it didn’t and apparently I had put him off by telling him he had to ask for my dad’s permission first and he wanted to do this face to face. In the end it was just the two of us on Christmas morning and it was perfectly simple. We were then able to celebrate with our families. It was just the loveliest Christmas.
Where did the wedding take place? Chiesa del Carmine in Umbria; a beautiful ancient church and farmhouse set in a valley amidst olive groves and vineyards. The property has been restored into a holiday villa and the attention to detail is impeccable. It was everything we were looking for; intimate and rustic but also incredibly luxurious. 63
weddingswinter2017.qxp_Layout 1 25/01/2017 11:25 Page 62
What did the bride wear?
I wore a blush coloured gown by Emily Riggs Bridal. Emily is based in Portland and I took a bit of a risk ordering my dress online but when I saw her designs nothing else could compare, so I went ahead and ordered it.
What did the rest of the Bridal party wear? My bridesmaids wore sage green Two Birds gowns. I wanted something that would suit all of them and for them not to be too hot. The Two Birds gowns were perfect for a destination wedding as they were so light and could be tied in all different styles. The girls loved them and looked so elegant on the day. My three gorgeous flower girls wore blush dresses from BHS – they were an absolute bargain. The groomsmen wore blue trousers and matching waistcoats with brown shoes. We didn't want them to be too hot either and we also wanted the wedding day to have a relaxed feel.
What was your theme? “Simple rustic elegance” – we looked to the church and surrounding countryside for inspiration. We wanted the whole place to be covered in candlelight and collected what seemed like hundreds of brass candlesticks and vases for months before. Even Alistair got into it and would scour eBay for the best deals. We had candles everywhere; in the church, hung in the trees and all around the gardens. Our colour scheme was greens, pinks and creams and my main criteria was lots of olive foliage. Describe your cake We had a traditional Italian wedding cake. The caterers prepared it on the day and it was layers of puff pastry, chantilly cream and fresh fruit. Something blue? My something blue was my groom. He wore a stunning royal blue suit with a polka dot tie.
What were the highlights? We had a “wedding week” and so got to spend a lot of time with our closest family and friends, which made it very special as we now live in Australia. My favourite part of the day was the ceremony, which was a little unexpected as I thought it would be the party. There was so much love in the room and those moments of anticipation leading up to and walking down the aisle with my parents and best girls were just incredible. How did it end? It ended with the survivors jumping in the pool for a very early morning swim. We had an acoustic guitarist play at the party and he succeeded in getting everybody up dancing. It was so much fun.
Is there anything you wish you’d done differently? I wouldn’t change a single thing but wish I had delegated a bit more, especially in the days leading up to the wedding. I am a bit of a control freak, so wanted to control everything but it’s impossible on the day and you really do not care about the small things anyway. My wedding planners were amazing too, so I definitely should have let them take more control. It rained on our wedding day and we had planned an outdoor ceremony and had to change everything last minute, but my wedding planners, Chrissie and Alessandra, moved everything into the church at very short notice and everything looked so beautiful that we were glad it turned out that way. Everybody thought I would freak out about the rain but I really didn’t care. I was about to marry the love of my life surrounded by the people I love the most in the world. Nothing else mattered. Where did you go on honeymoon? To New York.

Mesmerizing in Mexico Diana and Will were married on 12th September 2015 at The Banyan Tree, Mayakoba in Mexico
weddingswinter2017.qxp_Layout 1 24/01/2017 09:03 Page 65
How did you meet? A mutual friend invited us to a finance networking event in London – we were both looking for jobs at the time, but ended up finding love!
How did the proposal happen? We were on holiday with some friends in Piedmont, Italy. We had to walk through the vineyards to get to the pool area. One afternoon walking back he dropped on one knee and popped the question! I was so excited I nearly dropped my towel Where did the wedding take place? The beautiful Banyan Tree Mayakoba, Riviera Maya, Mexico.
What did you wear (bride)? Prala Wedding Dress, by Pronovias
What did the rest of the Bridal party wear? Will wore an Eton shirt, Zegna trousers and Colombian handmade flip flops. Bridesmaids all wore turquoise green (my favourite colour) flowing dresses. My sister is a fashion designer, so she was in charge. 67
weddingswinter2017.qxp_Layout 1 24/01/2017 09:03 Page 66
What was your theme? Beach Party Paradise
Describe your cake Diana is lactose intolerant, so I got to make the call on this one. It was White Chocolate ganache with vanilla, triple tier. I fleetingly forgot about the intolerance when I rubbed cake on her face after the cutting! something Blue? My garter had a small blue ribbon and Will’s shirt had blue buttons too.
What were the highlights? Managing to get both our families together in this amazing location. I never thought it would be possible, but everyone did their part to make it the best weekend ever! The party amazing, cocktails on the beach, live mariachis, baby turtles hatching during the cocktails, great food, music and the mixing of cultures (Colombians are party animals!)....Oh, and saying ‘I do’!
Your best buy? The local Mariachis really gave it a unique vibe, and got involved with the party, thanks to our amazing wedding planner Xanath Bañuelos for organising it!
How did it end? After the party at one of the Golf View Villas at Banyan Tree, Mayakoba. They have rooftop pools so ideal for an after-party. The English side of the group got shown up a bit; well outlasted by the Colombians, even the Grandma!
is there anything you wish you’d done differently? One minor regret is not having a magician. I do know some tricks myself, but it’s just not the same.
Where did you go on honeymoon? We actually did things backwards and had a pre-honeymoon! A week in the Maldives relaxing! We also had an extended stay in Mexico – it’s not often we get to spend time with our families all together like that, so we really took advantage of it!

Our Little Piece of Paradise
The Sarojin at
weddingswinter2017.qxp_Layout 1 24/01/2017 09:03 Page 71
Serene white beaches, pools that blend into the tropical gardens, daybeds draped in flowing white fabric are just a few of the things that make The Sarojin in Khao Lak, Thailand one of the most idyllic places we have visited. Nestled within 10 acres of tropical gardens leading directly onto the beach The Sarojin is so blissful you won’t want to leave. Arriving at The Sarojin, we are greeted with friendly faces, cold towels and fresh juice and made to feel at home straight away. Taking a seat in the impressive entrance pavilion, we admire the landscape of palm trees and lush greenery that surround the serene looking lotus pond and can’t wait to explore the rest of this impressive looking retreat. Our room, a garden residence, was nestled amongst Ficus, Palm and Frangipani trees, and reached via a hidden pathway. Crisp white sheets, rose petals sprinkled in the oval stone couples bathtub, an outside terrace complete with our own Thai Sala (day bed) - this truly was a place of peace and tranquility. 1pm and time for breakfast, yes here at The Sarojin even breakfast is unique – served in The Ficus restaurant, a refined relaxed space where you can sit inside or out overlooking the magnificent lotus pond. Breakfast is a la carte and served all day until 6pm with an extensive choice of cereals, pastries, fresh fruit, traditional Thai dishes, eggs and so much more. Beverages include fresh fruit juices, an assortment of teas and coffees and even sparkling wine – all served by the most amazing staff, who are attentive, warm and welcoming. There is no rush here, you can choose to linger as long as you like. After our lunchtime breakfast it was time to head to the pool, for some serious lazing around. The individual pavilions that surround the stunning deep blue infinity pool prove the perfect place for this. The pool itself is divine, whether you choose to just dip your toes in or swim a few laps, the tranquility and beauty of the water will have you mesmerized. All this relaxing was becoming addictive, so a little trip to the Pathway’s Spa was required. An intimate haven that merges into its surroundings beautifully. Walking into the spa brings a sense of calm even before you’ve removed your flip-flops! Pathway’s blends together the ancient physical and spiritual healing of spa, creating an almost sacred harmony for physical and spiritual nourishment. Pre-treatment, hubbie and I luxuriated in the open air relaxation area listening to the wildlife around us, drinking the most delicious herbal tea and choosing which essential oil smell we were most drawn to (this would be the oil that was then used for our massage) - I chose Jai Yen (Calm Heart) a blend of mint and eucalyptus and hubbie chose Jai Dee (Kindness), a blend of lemongrass, lavender and sandalwood. The full body massage that followed saw any remaining stress leave my body. The slight breeze through the trees heightened the ambience of the whole experience and the birds softly singing in the distance, a treatment here really is an indulgence like no other.

If lounging around doing nothing all day is too much for you, the Sarojin’s ‘imagineer’ will arrange experiences for you to try. Whether it’s diving or fishing from the resorts very own boat, the Lady Sarojin, walks through national parks, elephant trekking, mountain biking, golfing, or waterfall dining to name but a few. Like everything at The Sarojin nothing is too much trouble if you want it, they will do their upmost to accommodate. We decided to do a little exploring ourselves and travelled down the Takuapa River, known as The Little Amazon, where we discovered the surrounding rainforests on a pleat boat (Thailand’s traditional version of a speed boat), an adventure that had us encounter snakes, birds, monkeys, lizards and other wildlife in their natural habitat, followed by a traditional Thai lunch and a guided tour of the local food market. Back at The Sarojin we had been moved to one of their Spa Suites, privately tucked away on the upper floor, with its own outdoor couples circular relaxation pool and sun terrace with magnificent views overlooking the lush tropical gardens. Inside was a truly luxurious space offering an ensuite couples bathroom with rain shower and stone bathtub, along with a separate bedroom and lounge area. Dining that evening was in The Ficus restaurant for their Mediterranean to Michelin evening. The food served was impeccable. Careful attention to detail is used to bring to life fresh ingredients and dishes that you can tell are made with passion. A fresh selection of seafood including oysters and scallops were just a couple of the foods on offer, others included foie gras, beef tenderloin, black cod, along with a selection of the most delicious desserts, the whole dining experience was a culinary delight – I don’t think it will be long before that Michelin star is awarded!

Just when you think it can’t get any better, head down to the beach and be prepared to be wowed!!! The hotel has its’ own private section of beach with sun loungers, umbrellas and beach towels, iced water is on tap and the Edge bar/restaurant is on hand for fresh fruit smoothies, snacks, beers and lunch. Come the evening The Edge becomes another dining option, right on the beach you can enjoy the most romantic meal just listening to the waves splashing against the rocks, looking out into the vast blackness and imagining what lies beyond - dining here is a magical experience, and it still doesn’t stop - whether it's a romantic candlelit dinner next to a jungle waterfall or on a private sand isle, a gourmet picnic breakfast on a secluded white sand beach, or a private dinner in a pool island pavilion or in your own sala, outside or inside, on the beach, in the jungle, in the gardens - The Sarojin will create a private dining option just for you. Attention to detail at The Sarojin is faultless, from your own beach bag and hand bag size mosquito spray, to the poolside service of cool water and fresh fruit, it really is your own piece of paradise, a place where dreams do come true and somewhere that will be etched in your memory forever.
