How has the fashion industry changed since you started your journey’s? Fashion is always evolving, renewing and morphing. In some ways it’s exactly the same in other ways it has changed but that’s the nature of fashion. A very obvious way is social media which has made easier to access and interact with brands, buyers etc. How does working together as a collaborative duo work, do you both have your respective roles in producing a collection or do you collaborate on all aspects? We collaborate on everything together, from design, to print, to working on construction details.
Longshaw Ward
We are constantly bouncing ideas off each other, it’s a much quicker process than when we had our own separate labels
British Fashion Duo: Husband and wife team David Longshaw and Kirsty Ward talk about their Womenswear and Accessorie label, working together, and fashion sustainablity.
How do you settle any creative differences you may have when working on a collection?
as a designer that follows through into all of your collections, or do you approach each collection with a blank canvas?
We met designing together and are married now so we are used to bouncing ideas off each other and are really open to each others suggestions. Failing that Kirsty is always right... How do you develop a singular voice
Each season is an evolution from the season before- we do have new themes and areas we look at. But the idea is that people can buy pieces from one season to the next and mix them together and recognise them as Longshaw Ward.
What is your favourite collection you’ve produced so far and why? Our latest collection (which is always the hope as you should always be progressing and improving) it feels like the coming together of lots of things we have been experimenting with and ideas we have been developing.
afi 15
What was the process of starting your label like, what challenges did you face? We started our about 2 years ago.
label
We met designing in Italy for Alberta Ferretti (having studied on the MA fashion design courses at St Martins and the RCA). David then moved to Max Mara. We both returned to England and started our own separate labels which we had for about 6 years. Kirsty exhibited with Vogue Italia and was
chosen by Selfridges to create a window for their bright young things. David also became artistic Director of a Chinese brand. We were sharing a studio but both abroad a lot and decided it would be more fun to merge and set up Longshaw Ward. Meaning we now travel together, do shows abroad together and create better collections.
16 afi
What does the future look like for Longshaw Ward? Fabricy- more frocks, more jewellery, more collabs. With lots of challenges arising in the fashion industry, in terms of consumers being more sustainable conscious; where do you see the fashion industry in the next 10 years? There has been a huge amount of disposable fashion particularly in the fast fashion / high street sector, customers just wanting cheap stuff, quantity over quality in some cases on a one wear basis. People are becoming more aware of the environmental costs of this type of disposable fashion. The fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world. That’s not to say that people should stop buying fashion, it’s that they should buy better quality products that you can wear multiple times, which when you break down cost per wear make the pieces better value than the fast fashion alternative. We purposefully design, sample and make all our collections in Britain including collaborating
with the brilliant British heritage brand John Smedley on our knitwear, which is all made in their Derbyshire factory where they have been based since 1784. By making in Britain, we know the people who make our pieces and the conditions they are made in, and it reduces the carbon foot print and we can keep tighter control of quality. In the next 10 years, the industry will have to have more transparency in terms of where fabrics and final pieces are really made (not just finished) and pieces will have to become more expensive so that everyone on the supply chain is paid fairly. What have been the most valuable jobs you’ve had that have propelled you to where you both are now? In many ways it would have to be our first job at Alberta Ferretti. It was the first job for both of us after our MA’s (David moved there the day after graduating, Kirsty after her MA show) and it’s where we met, so we wouldn’t have Longshaw Ward with out having worked there in Italy together.

It’s showtime for the guys
A round-up on the London Fashion Week Men’s SS19 highlights. WORDS: STEF CARTER
I
John Lawrence Sullivan SS19
n it’s fifth year, London Fashion Week Men’s continued to have a paired back lineup of designers, with some notable names missing from the list. With the runway at 180 Strand cut in half for some shows, a noticeable scaled down showroom with no access to the normal respite areas of 180 Strand (presumably a result of the internal building work) this season seemed to hint at missing investments. With that being said, the energy and irrefutable talent displayed throughout the designers who did showcase their work diverted your attention from shortcomings on the line-up and venue.

My first show of the season was kicked off by one of my favourite designers on the Men’s line up; John Lawrence Sullivan. Arashi Yanagawa seems to have his finger firmly on the pulse of menswear; consistently delivering strong tailoring influenced by the underbelly of the streets. This season with Depech Mode’s Dave Gahan as his muse superbly demonstrated post punk currents balanced with powerful tailoring. I could leave the overly referenced acid wash apparel and crop tops, but the tailoring, layered printed polka dot printed fabrics I’ll take over and over again. With The Trooping of The Colour hindering myself and a colleague from arriving to St James’s Show on time, we did however manage to catch the walk through. Th-e open
air show closes down Jermyn Street to showcase 25 brands in a see now buy now catwalk. It was a perfectly curated display of classic tailoring which the district is renowned for,

woven into ready to wear streetwear, with the brands effortlessly cool and fresh vibe. Wood Wood presented an extremely cohesive and desirable collection which has been crucial in propelling them to success. Uber were certainly being kept in business this fashion weekend with some shows dotted around the city, I headed to my next destination: All Saints Church in Fitzrovia. This was the setting for Sharon Wauchob’s first men’s collection which she teamed up with Savile Row tailor’s Norton & Sons. This was certainly one of the most sophisticated designer’s on this season’s bill. The focus was on strong tailoring. It was contemporary and luxurious and perfect for the setting; having said that it was a bit too vanilla for my personal taste, however I

alongside contemporary paired back tailoring with pieces you could easily merge into your wardrobe. The only catwalk open to the public, which is a great way to integrate the unobtainable invites at Fashion Week for the adorning fashion forward member of the public. After all, last year the menswear industry was valued at £15 billion so integrating the consumer within the showcase is crucial for encouraging continuous spending. Next onto a firm favourite of mine - Scandi founded label Wood Wood. Their pieces are instantly wearable with each collection being as desirable as the last. The presentation was held at One Adelphi in a room flooded with light, but sadly was unbearably hot. The collection was a “celebration of the outside world, nature and exploration through travel.” The vibrant tones mixed with an earthy pastel palette were
can appreciate the masterful skill that has gone into each piece. Now to finish the first day on a high; Liam Hodges. Maybe it’s because I’m a huge fan of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas; and an even bigger fan of the city, that this collection really appealed. It has certainly been met with mixed reviews as the tongue in cheek tan lines and facial tattoos haven’t sat well with some of the shows attendees. Outside the glamour of the bright lights there is a dirtier and grungier side to the city which I feel Liam captured superbly. The overall collection was extremely wearable which Hodges achieves collection after collection. Sure the overly theatrical props were too much for some people’s palette, but when you peel this back what you are left with is a well thought out collection from a must-see designer that delights the senses season after season.

Blindness SS19

First on Sunday morning’s bill for me was Phoebe English who presented (for the first time together) an androgynous men’s and women’s collection. The main subject of this collection was challenging gender clothing, making each piece unisex and pushing the boundaries of traditional conforming binary garments. Both collections complimented each other, from their blush pinks and bright oranges, (alongside her traditional monochromatic pieces) to the delicate use of tulles and cotton. The construction was second to none and typical of English’s brand. This presentation stands as a turning point in her brand, or in the designer’s words “marks a moment of chance” as women’s meets menswear. I’ve always been a big fan of Alex Mullins. He manages to perfectly marry tailoring and streetwear with his dose of pizazz in equal quantities. This season however I was left slightly bemused by his series of nine triptych’s that he presented. I felt it was a series of hit and misses that were pulled together by a high energy enthralling show. I was not a fan of the elasticated neon cut out vests from the first look or the leather vests that were teamed with multi-coloured patchwork jeans, I think they distracted from the tailoring and weren’t cohesive with the rest of the collection – which I adored. The assortment of prints made this collection sing, from the tiger print shirts, to the Japanese irezumi prints that kept the viewers captivated. This show was about Mullin’s going against the crowd, and producing a collection which was different to anything else out there “Everyone’s copying everyone and the only way to create original content is to dig your own path.” Here here, and even if I’m not bowled over by the whole collection, I’m still a big fan of the brand. My fashion week experience was closed by Blindness. Founded by a South Korean duo, they have been nominated for the LVMH prize and were heralded as ones to watch this season, and they lived up to the anticipation. The collection was all about first love. It was dreamy, it was voluminous, it was genderless, it was captivating. “To anyone, first love is full of curiosity and confusion, naivety and emotional turmoil, and an ultimate lack of control. Yet reversely it is something so natural and needs no justification.” With its mixture of fabrics and textures, exaggerated silhouettes Blindness was a dreamy experience from the first model to the last. This collection exuded strength and beauty whilst challenging gender binaries and it was a triumphant success.
