Festive season is here and I’m sure holiday, family and fun activities run in most people’s minds. However, I can’t help but notice (or perhaps a personal raise in awareness) of the unrest around the world in recent times; Riots, political confrontations, violence, extreme weather, forest fires, volcano eruptions etc. Is the world going into crisis? This is indeed a hard topic to debate in this supposedly joyful season, but I felt an urge to speak out. These are the facts that are happening around us. I confess that I have been one of those who can get stuck in my own little bubble, and put these “irrelevant” news aside since there is very little I can do about it. I’m sure others out there could relate. However, the more I thought about it, the more relevant these topics are, directly or indirectly to our everyday lives. Perhaps we underestimate the power of conversation, to spark change in someone’s heart. The family and friends gatherings might just be the opportunity to spark a conversation about the bigger global picture and how we as individuals can contribute. The thought of all of this has made me come to a conclusion that Afi magazine should reflect our changing society and global issues through the photographic art that we create. Fashion and beauty are a reflection of our time now, and what better way to convey the world’s message, culture and happenings through this medium. It will take a while to put this in place and much planning is needed. Global awareness is everyone’s issue, and with your help, I pledge to make a change in this New Year.
I wish everyone a very merry Christmas

INANCH EMIR Multi award-winning Artistic Director of Inanch London and Celebrity Hair Stylist has made her mark on the industry with her world-renowned expertise and amazing application techniques with hair extensions.. written by Luciana Petrossian Award-winning hair stylist Inanch Emir launched Inanch London in Fitzrovia in 2005. With over twenty years of experience, Inanch has become recognised as one of London’s most trusted hairdressers. Inanch has extensive experience and talent with hair extensions and has played a significant role in developing the ‘natural look’, favoured by London’s professional stylists, VIPs, actresses and models. She has acquired a number of loyal clientele who travel across the world for Inanch to apply their hair extensions in the Fitzrovia flagship salon. After years of experience, Inanch made the move to develop and launch her own range of hair extensions - Gold Class to great success. The range is now stocked exclusively in over 20 high-end salons across the UK and won “Best Instant Human Hair Extensions” at the Hair Awards in 2017. Inanch’s world-renowned reputation for hair extensions has won her a cult following of leading fashion and beauty editors from Elle, Glamour, Vogue and the Louis Vuitton London City guide where her salon is listed as the destination place for the most natural looking extensions in London. She is also the only hairdresser in the UK to have won The Hair Awards “Best Extensionist” accocalde for 3 consecutive years (2013, 2014, 2015) entering the Hall of Fame along with other top UK hairdressers. In addition to her expertise in hair styling, cutting techniques and applying world-class extensions; Inanch has an exceptional knowledge and understanding of trichology and is an approved specialist for Hair & Scalp treatment applications and hair loss diagnosis. I was lucky enough to try the Spa Mist Hair & Scalp Treatment. A unique treatment that repairs and rejuvenates your hair – giving it back its strength without weighing it down with heavy conditioning treatments.

Using mist, as the name suggests, the product penetrates deeper into your hair – taking the nourishment where it is needed the most and practically ‘healing’ your hair from the inside out. It takes no more than 20 minutes (Spa Mist Express) or 40 minutes for an intense treatment
(Full Spa Mist) and uses a deeply conditioning product (Inanch use Philip Kingsley’s award-winning Elasticizer treatment) and heat to help it absorb, followed by a cooling period to lock in moisture. The treatment will leave your hair visibly smoother and softer, I couldn’t believe the transformation in such a short amount of time! After my wonderful hair treatment gave me the bounce back in my step (and my hair!) I managed to steal the lovely Inanch away for an interview.
styling became just as legendary as the couture hats. Another highlight of course was launching my own salon and my very own collection of Gold Class hair extensions. I was, and still am so proud to offer women a product, which I truly believe is the best and can make them look and feel their best. What was your inspiration behind the salon? I’ve always been passionate about hair, and I said earlier I started working at a salon when I was only 13. I realised at a very young age, I wanted to one day have my own salon and I’m so pleased I’ve succeeded. Opening your own salon is quite different to just being a hairdresser; you have to think a lot more about the business side of things rather than just the creative. It took a lot of hard work, but having the salon is one of my greatest achievements. It’s amazing to have a personal space where I can welcome clients and house my own products. How did you start working with celebrities?
What inspired you to begin your career in hair? How did you get started? For as long as I can remember I was always fascinated by hair, when I was growing up I would love to play and style my family and friends hair. Determined to pursue my passion, at the age of 13 I got my first Saturday job at a hairdresser in Enfield where I grew up.
After completing my NVQ 3 and having years of experience working in salons, I knew I wanted to move into fashion and editorial styling. I had always dreamed of working with models and celebrities, so in the nineties I began applying to help on various shoots. The teams I worked with were impressed and I kept getting invited back to work with great clients and celebrities. Following these shoots I began to work with aspiring models and creative directors, creating a range of bespoke styles, cuts and colours for a variety of fashion pop up shows and editorials in London.
I really enjoyed learning new skills and techniques and speaking to a range of clients. At the age of 18 I decided to complete my NVQ level 2 in hairdressing, to become a qualified hairdresser. I also wanted to be able to train and supervise so I went on to complete the NVQ level 3 in hairdressing at Enfield College, whilst working at a salon in Central London. What is the highlight of your career so far? I’ve been fortunate enough to work with a wide variety of celebrities, models and VIP’s in both the past and present, and I am very happy with my current list of clients. However, to respect the privacy of our famous clientele I would not list them. I feel very lucky that I’ve definitely had more than one career highlight – some of them have to include working with some of Paris and London’s top designers at fashion weeks over the years; and creating bold, new looks for fashion editorials. Being part of the team who created Eva Herzigova’s hairpieces and hair accessories for the one and only Philip Treacy show in Paris was incredible. The 2003 show is garnered worldwide accolade and the hair
What is the biggest challenge when styling a celebrities’ hair? Do celebrities frequently wear hair extensions? There are many challenges you can face when styling a celebrities’ hair, most of time constraints can be difficult when someone has to get ready quickly. Many celebrities use hair extensions to add volume or length to their hair, and some extensions are not
afi 93
always applied correctly, which can be another hindrance. Luckily, I’ve very experienced in working with different extensions so I can always manage to style their hair in time! Please tell me all about your amazing Gold Class hair extensions and that unique application process that you’re known for? By the time I launched my collection of extensions I was a very experienced extensionist, so I knew the kind of product I wanted to create. For me extensions should look as natural as possible, making your hair look healthy and voluminous. They should also not damage your hair- unfortunately many extensions and in particular poorly applied extensions have ruined people’s hair. This is naturally very distressing for women so it was important for me to take time to create extensions that would last and not damage the hair. For the best and most natural looking extensions we use 100% human hair, which is ‘remy hair’ meaning that all of the cuticles are facing in the same direction. Although we offer various application methods, from my person experience after 15 years applying, I always advise my clients to that pre-bonded keratin tips offer the best results. The final way to keep good extensions is all about the after-care. I always sit down and have a consultation with clients about how to continue to look after their extensions, and every good hairdresser should do this. What is your number one hair care tip? My number one hair care tip would be good hair condition treatments used one a week will keep your hair healthy and colour in check. My number two hair care tip is silk pillows or a good silk hair bag. It really helps reduce the risk of split ends and encourages growth, What are your favourite hair products and tools? My favourite hair products and tools would have to be from my Gold Class collection, our Gold Class Argan Oil, Gold Class Protein Spray and our Thermal Protection serum are all great and work with most hair types. Our Thermal Super brush is amazing for a speedy blow-dries and won’t damage your hair. For hot tools, I’m a big fan of the new GHD Oracle, for lovely wavy locks. If you could style anyone you haven’t worked with, who would it be? That’s a tough question, there are so many wom-

en I’d love to work with – but if I could only choose one, it would have to be Beyonce! Funniest hairdressing moment? We always have lots of fun in the salon and backstage at our various editorials shoots and shows. There are been quite a few instants are pranks involving chairs disappearing and stylists ending up on the floor. It’s a classic but still gets a laugh every time! What do you think will be the next big hair trend? For AW2019 I think braids and bold, voluminous hair will be in. It’s quite typical for more these styles to become popular in the winter season as everyone enjoys looking a little more glamourous. However, in past years this has been a little more minimal, but I’m predicting longer locks with lots of volume. What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever been given? Probably two things – to never rush into anything and to never give up. The first was very important, when I was learning and planning to set up the salon. Especially if you are someone who has not owned a company before, there is a lot to learn along the way, so take your time, make measured decisions and work with people you can trust. The second part is imperative to many things in life, but especially when setting up a business – it will take a longer than you think, but it’s always worth it! What is the most important quality you look for in someone joining your team? Someone who is hard working, good with people, passionate about hair and loyal. Hairdressing involves being part of a team, building great customer relations and it can also be very stressful with long hours. I want to make sure I find someone who has those traits, understands the business and wants to be part of my team. I cherish my employees and appreciate their hard work. When I employ people, I always do with a mindset that they will stay with me for a long time – I’m happy that most do! What do you enjoy most about working at London Fashion Week? Everything! It’s inspiring to be around so many talented teams of people, from fashion designers, makeup artists, the production crew – and
of course my hair team. It really is a work of art –and it takes a lot to put the show together. It takes a lot of time and preparation but it’s amazing to see models walk down the catwalk with hairstyles we’ve spent months designing. What’s your process when designing hair for a designer’s collection? First of all, I would meet or speak to the designer to discuss their new collections, ideas for the show or presentation and of course their vision for the model’s hairstyles and compare our ideas. From then I often create a mood board of ideas to show the designer, and then we will naturally filter through our ideas until we decide on our favourite looks for the show. How do you prepare your team for fashion week? I’m fortunate that my team has been with for a long time and I trust them all. As a result, once I show them the hair styles we have decided on for various models, we would assess the time frame we’d need, how to work with different models’ types of hair textures, length etc – to see who would need extensions or colour applied. We would then divide up into smaller teams, who would take on different tasks depending on their expertise. What advice would you give to someone starting out who wants to make it big in the industry? Probably the best advice is just to work really hard and believe in yourself. As cliché as that can often sound, I truly don’t know anyone who has succeeded without doing both of those things. Particularly in the beginning of your career, you need to really put the hours in and get as much experience as you can. Work hard, be friendly and meet as many people as you can, and be bold to introduce yourself to people, as you never know what opportunity might come your way.
I try to make sure to find time to relax and unwind afterwards, either by taking a few days off to spend time with my family or booking in for a massage. Even a few hours to myself can really help. Do you have anything exciting coming up that you’d like to share with us? What’s next? Yes, we have lots of exciting things in the mix. We have just become the exclusive London clinic for the new CNC Hair Loss treatment! This is a subject very close to my heart, having long worked with hair extensions and hair enhancements and having witnessed the impact they make to my clients’ self-esteem, I’m thrilled to be able to take our transformations to the next level and support people suffering from hair loss. The innovative CNC system works with a 39-step process to create a prosthetic scalp, which is implanted with real hair for hair loss, suffers. The results are a completely natural look that can last for up to 18 months. To launch the service, we are set to build a new exclusive CNC room to give clients facing what can be a very sensitive and frustrating issue a private space. It is also Inanch London’s 15 Year Anniversary next year! So we will be planning lots of fun events and treats for our customer each month of 2020 to celebrate!
Your life must be so fast-paced, what do you do in terms of self-care? It is! I’ve gotten used to it, I’ve worked since I was 13, and so in that sense I’m used to and enjoy working hard. But obviously since starting my own business and becoming more involved in fashion weeks, things have become a lot busier and it can be hard to find time to relax. I love being part of fashion weeks and that happens four times a year, so it’s a given that I’m going to be really busy and end up quite tired after those.
