Alliance française $15 / 6pm – 8.30pm

Sites of knowledge, sites of power: the Paris Museum, collecting the world (17391832) by CÊdric CrÊmière, Director of the Natural History Museum, Le Havre. The Natural History Museum of Paris, founded in 1635, was a site for cultivating and curating medicinal herbs.

The nomination in 1739 of Georges-Louis Leclerc ushered in a significant period of development for the institution and for Natural History, thanks to the inspirational spirit of the Enlightenment and the positioning of France as a great world power. RMIT Brandmark

Clear space & Minimum size RMIT Brandmark The RMIT Brandmark is the key identifier of the university. The RMIT Brandmark is formed by two key elements: - the RMIT Wordmark - the RMIT Symbol

The relationship between these two elements is fixed and should never be separated or used as individual elements. It is essential that the brandmark is always reproduced from the digital art files supplied.

RMIT Symbol

Clear space The RMIT brandmark needs to be surrounded by an area of uninterrupted clear space to allow it to remain prominent on all communications. Clear space is the non-print area surrounding the brandmark. A basic formula had been used to calculate the minimum ‘clear space’– this can be used to determine clear space for the brandmark at any size.

No other graphic elements (such as photography or typography) should appear within this zone. Wherever possible, apply more clear space than the minimum specified in this guide. La Faute à Rousseau (Blame it on Rousseau) Screening of short films celebrating the tercentenary of Jean-Jacques Rousseau 24 oct followed by a conference-debate by Sara Wellman, Associate Lecturer at the University of Technology of Sydney. At the Alliance Française wed

de Melbourne / 6.30pm / free event Films for mature audiences La Faute à Rousseau is a project gathering 55 film makers who pay tribute to one of the main philosophers of the Age of Enlightenment. Jean-Jacques Rousseau is one of the few French-speaking writers who left a mark on literature on a universal scale. Born in Geneva in 1712, Rousseau spent more than 30 years in France where he is still seen as one of the initiators of the French Revolution. His work also influenced the overall development of modern political, sociological and educational thought. His novel Emile: or, On Education is a treatise on the education of the whole person for citizenship. His sentimental novel Julie, ou la nouvelle Héloïse was of importance to the development of pre-romanticism and romanti-

cism in fiction. Rousseau’s autobiographical Confessions, which initiated the modern autobiography, and his Reveries of a Solitary Walker, exemplified the late 18th-Century movement known as the Age of Sensibility, featuring an increasing focus on subjectivity and introspection that has characterized the modern age. His Discourse on the Origin of Inequality and his On the Social Contract are cornerstones in modern political and social thought. La Faute à Rousseau brings together 55 renowned directors, young creators and film students to offer a vivid mosaic portrait of one of this main philosophers and writers of modern times. These short films come from Switzerland, France, Germany, Canadian Quebec, Lebanon,

Spain, Argentina, Brazil, and the United States, and they show the extraordinary vitality and validity of Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s philosophy. Far from being a celebration, they are a powerful argument in favour of freedom, social contracts, education, and our connection to other people, subjectivity, and love. Realised on the occasion of Rousseau’s tercentennial, this project presents several short films from fictions to documentaries, essays and animations, all directed in complete freedom. The screenings of some of the short films will be followed by a conference-debate conducted in English by Sara Wellman, Associate Lecturer at the University of Technology of Sydney, doctorate in French literature and specialist of Rousseau.

Alliance Française de Melbourne, Entry Free Hours: Mon-Thu: 9am to 6pm Fri & Sat: 9am to 6pm Sun: 1pm to 6pm Since 2010, the Fondation Alliance Française has held a photography competition open to Alliances Françaises from around the world. More than 1,000 amateur artists from 80 countries participated this year. The exhibition, on display at the

Alliance Française de Melbourne from 3 to 19 October, will present photographs from the 21 laureates. The theme of the first competition was “20 years old in my country”. For this second competition, the theme “Planète Femmes” (“Women’s Planet”) was chosen as a way to pay tribute to women from the four corners of the globe through the eyes of some incredible artists from very diverse backgrounds. Each photograph tells a story, a part of daily life, a feeling. Each one reflects an exceptional quality, opens a door to the imagination and is an invitation to explore. “We live in a world saturated with images, but they’re not always rewarding. In their own way, the photos presented here allow us to better understand and love the world”, says

Candice du Chayla, Communications and Development Manager at the Fondation Alliance Française. The Fondation Alliance Française jury, chaired by agnès b. and made up of other professionals from the world of art and media, named Manual Araya from the Alliance Française de Marco Juarez (Argentina) and Sam Lim from the Alliance Française de Penang (Malaysia) as the competition’s two ex aequo overall winners. The award-winning photographs, first exhibited in Paris, are now on a world tour across the Alliance Française international network. Une échappatoire (dans ce monde si cruel)

An exhibition by St Kilda based artists ANNIE EREZ and

ALISON KENNEDY

ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE EILDON GALLERY opening Tues 13 Nov, 6.30pm to 8.00pm

ABOUT ANNIE EREZ

Annie Erez is a visual artist whose chosen media is painting. She has a background in design and styling and has completed a Postgraduate Diploma of Visual Arts in 2011 at the University of Melbourne. She creates an aerial perspective of a fantastical geography from ink and painted enamel. The navigation between chaos and order inspires her to juxtapose poured paint with fine linework. Her pieces explore movement and stasis, control and freedom. The viewer is invited to enter a new realm.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Float : Une échappatoire (dans ce monde si cruel) is a series of abstract works, with vivid colors, aiming to express what words cannot (express). Forms float in the fantastical space. Everything is possible and imaginable. Everyone can read each work differently.

ABOUT ALISON KENNEDY

Alison Kennedy works in paint. She is currently completing a Masters of Contemporary Art at the University of Melbourne. She works with acrylic and oil on canvas to create a sense of space - reflecting her background in architecture and design. She playfully questions what is real and artificial – “realistic abstraction”. Surfaces overlap and collide – or do they?

It’s time for me to say good bye and thanks to all of you: teachers, team, board members, partners, Alliance Française network in Australia and friends of Alliance Française! It’s been a great pleasure meeting you and working with you all. Living in Australia has been a real eye opener from a personal and professional point of view and my stay in Melbourne will always keep a special place in my heart! It’s been a great intercultural and multicultural experience in a “no worries” atmosphere that I cherished above all! I’m leaving for new exciting horizons: I have been appointed director at Alliance française of Trivandrum, in India. I wish all the best to you, to Alliance française and to the new head of education, Miss Aurélie Pierre.” Alice Gauny

French Diplomas What are DELF&DALF diplomas?

The DELF (Diploma in French language) or the DALF (Advanced diploma in French) are the official French-language diploma awarded by France’s Ministry of National Education. They are recognized around the world and are valid for life. As an official certification of second-language proficiency, the DELF&DALF test the ability of students to use French in real-life situations. Testing is based on the six reference levels identified in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. At each level, four language skills are assessed: written comprehension, oral comprehension, written expression and oral expression. The diplomas are tailored to meet the needs of all ages and all segments of the

population. It is not necessary to take all of the exams or to take them sequentially. Enrolment at each level is determined according to the student’s confidence level.

Why take a DELF exam? ● are an international recognition of French proficiency; ● are a life-long certification; ● are based on the same international standard used in 164 countries (CEFR); ● are a testimonial to a student’s success in learning French: they recognize the student’s accomplishments in French proficiency; ● are an internationally recognized official document that enriches the student’s school or professional portfolio; ● offer advantages for postsecondary education: they are recognized internationally by Francophone post-secondary institutions; ● are accepted in universities in France (B2 or higher level);

● enhance a student’s resumé: they describe in meaningful terms what the student is capable of doing in French; ● open doors to a wide range of career and recreational opportunities throughout the world; and ● support career advancement.

something you’ve seen or done which shows this idea, and which you’d like to share with us? I’ve got dozens of memories about it! It’s what makes me play live in fact. My favourite memory is from a concert at the Alliance Française in Essaouira in Morocco. I noticed an old man in the crowd dressed in red, in the Gnawa ceremonial dress. In the middle of my concert I went towards him and encouraged him to get up and dance with me, which he did with the help of his walking stick… The old man was more than 90 years old and left this world just a few weeks later. Is there a message that you wish to put forward through your music and during your world tours? The message is simple: It’s possible to live together with our differences. That’s how we lived in Lebanon before the war.

LIVING YOUTH (Vivre sa jeunesse) at the Alliance Française Entry free / BOOKING ESSENTIAL

Each November, The Month of the Documentary is the opportunity for the general public to discover a variety of films and documentaries: recent works, film heritage, films for the cinema, or audiovisual and autoproduction works, etc. Many documentaries presented are rarely seen on the screens, due to TV slots being more and more limited and to distribution and exploitation difficulties. The Month of the Documentary brings visibility

to these works often unknown. The program “Living Youth” includes 4 documentaries that all share a romantic tone in their filmed reality. They do not intend to show a current statement about a typecast youth. The direction for each of these films explores a freedom in cinema in order to portray the youth’s conflicts, desires and relationship to the world.
