The route to recovery The Ebola outbreak has threatened Liberia s fast moving post-war recovery process. But given Liberia s considerable resource endowment and coastal location there is potential for strong, rapid, and inclusive growth.

Beyond the Ebola outbreak, Liberia must bounce back. A comprehensive analysis of Liberia s business prospects and unique investment destination. Including: Overview, Sector by sector analysis, People to Watch and Interviews.

Overview. Prior to the Ebola outbreak, expectations were high that commodity exports would boost government spending on services and infrastructure. Before the crisis, economic growth had been strong, nearly up to 9%. Liberia had done remarkably well to attract some $16bn in foreign investment over the past five years. Despite the disease and local controversy on Government s efficacy, Liberia still has great options in seeking to break the cycle of dependency on foreign aid.  MINING. Bring in the earth-movers. In late 2011, ArcelorMittal shipped the first iron ore from the country in 20 years, raising hopes for Liberia to regain its status of one of the top five iron ore producers. The iron ore sector was a bright spot in early 2014 when China Union began shipping ore from its mine in Bong County and Putu Iron Ore Mining Company applied for a licence to begin full operations.  AGRICULTURE. Liberia s rubber industry has long been its economic engine, at times accounting for as much as 90% of official exports, but the economy is slowly diversifying. Singapore s Golden Agri Resources and Malaysia s Sime Darby are backing new oil palm plantations that will take a few years to develop.

 ENERGY & OIL. Chevron, Anadarko and Tullow have begun oil exploration but production may be some years away. ExxonMobil, Total and Petrobras are also said to be interested in the country s potential. Other prominent players include the National Oil company NOCAL, the Liberia Electricity Company LEC, Buchanan Renewables, Manitoba Hydro, Sinopec.  INFRASTRUCTURE. Railway revolution? Maritime strenghts with 4 ports. Player: APM Terminals. CONTACT: advertising@theafricareport.com T +33 1 4647 2544 ‒ Fax +33 1 4647 8132
