Visual Philosophy for Children
Wonder Ponder, Visual Philosophy for Children, is an innovative interdisciplinary project that uses thought-provoking visuals to help readers aged eight and over develop their own philosophical maps on a range of philosophical issues, fostering fun, critical and independent thinking. The project includes the publication of a series of six boxes, each of them on a specific philosophical topic, and a website containing free, quality educational support materials to use with the boxes. The project also includes designing and launching an online magazine that aims to become a philosophy for children site for practitioners but also seeks to reach a broader audience and build an online community for wondering and pondering together. The project will launch at the end of 2014, with the publication of the first box in two versions –Cruelty Bites in English and Mundo cruel in Spanish- and the opening of the website with support materials.
Wonder Ponder series titles and topics: 1. Cruelty Bites (on cruelty). 2. I, person (on personal identity and the differences between persons and robots). 3. No way! (on possibility and impossibility). 4. Freedom in a box (on freedom). 5. The real thing (on reality, imagination and dream). 6. What’s it all for? (on happiness and the meaning of life).
Contents of each box: 14 illustrated scenes. More than 100 carefully worded questions designed to spark a rich and well-oriented reflection without leading it to pre-established conclusions. 3 blank cards for readers to design their own philosophical scenes and pose their own questions. Recommended age: Age 8 and up. Although it has worked very well with children from age 4.
Description of the material: Wonder Ponder is designed for children to look at, read and think playfully by themselves, accompanied by an adult or in a group, in educational, play or family contexts. The scenes are printed on smooth card with rounded corners, with open questions about the scene on the back, laid out in different directions and at different angles, so that the reader/player has to turn, turn and turn the card to read the questions, mirroring the spirit of play, investigation and search of the material itself. The intuitive design of the material, with the questions laid out like a game, facilitates reading and interaction with the images for the child and the mediator. The boxes also include a brief visual guide-map that provides anchors for the philosophical reflections the image may lead to and shapes the possible conclusions that may be derived from the set of scenes in each box. This visual philosophical guide-map is designed for children to read or look at on their own, providing them with more tools and arguments for reflection, but also with a view to providing guidelines to mediators wishing to lead a dialogue.
Wonder Ponder is Intuitive and self-explanatory: the first scene, with its questions on the back, helps us “read” the following scenes. Systematic: in the sense that it enables readers/players to start building a philosophical system of their own, and also in the sense that it approaches each issue from a set of particular scenes to provide a more general, abstract vision of the whole. Flexible: it does not require the reader/player to follow any order in particular or even to answer all the questions. Non-directive: it does not intend to lead to a given answer but rather to stimulate a search for all possible answers.
Ellen Duthie
Spain, 1974 Born in Spain of British parents, she has an MA in Mental Philosophy from the University of Edinburgh. A writer, teacher, blogger and translator, her interests are focused on children’s literature and philosophy for children. Over the last ten years, she has been developing material to stimulate philosophical dialogue with and among children, using children’s literature and visual stimuli as prompts for discussion. She has taught several philosophy programs designed and developed for state and private institutions. She currently runs "Filosofía a la de tres" (One, two, three, philosophy!) and "Filosofía de cuento" (Story Philosophy), for preschool and primary school children respectively. It is within the context and over the course of her experience with philosophy and children that the concept of “visual philosophy for children” arose. This concept and approach is now materialised in the Wonder Ponder project. She is the author of the blog Filosofía a la de tres (filosofiaaladetres.blogspot.com), where she provides detailed accounts of the experience of her philosophy sessions with a preschool class in a state school in Madrid. The project is listed as an associated project of the “Teaching Children Philosophy” program of Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts (USA). She also writes the bilingual blogs Story Philosophy (storyphilosophy.blogspot.com), a blog of picturebook based philosophical discussions, and We Read it Like This (wereaditlikethis.blogspot.com), a children’s literature blog with reviews focused on the experience of reading aloud. In addition to philosophy for children and philosophy of education, her philosophical interests focus on the Scottish and English Enlightenment and the relationship between language and thought. She is the author of the translation of Inquiry into the Human Mind on the Principles of Common Sense. Madrid, Editorial Trotta, 2004, with an introduction and notes also written by her, of the 18th century Scottish philosopher Thomar Reid, which earned very positive reviews in Spain and the United Kingdom. Daniela Martagón
México 1986 Daniela is a graduate of Visual Arts from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and holds a Graduate Diploma in Drawing, Graphic Design and Web Design. Interested in visuals, play and alternative education, her work encompass image, philosophy, narrative and communication. In recent years she has specialised in children’s and YA literature and holds a Masters in Picture books from ‘i con i’ (Madrid). Daniela’s work was selected for the 2013 Iberoamerican Catalogue of Illustration. The freshness and humour in Daniela’s illustrations are the result of a self-demanding process which brings together theoretical research and learning of the craft. One of the most striking things about her work is her ability to thoughtfully digest theory from a broad variety of disciplines and then bring it back in the form of deceivingly simple art. She has illustrated La casa del ciempiés, written by Ignacio Sanz, (Editorial Narval, 2013), El conejo de la luna, written by Loma (Océano Travesía, 2014) and Cuentos mal contados, by Rafael Ordoñez (Narval, 2014).

María Teresa Andruetto

The construction of social and individual identity, the sequels of the dictatorship in her country and the female universe are some of the main lines of her work. Her books are read both by young and adult readers, breaking the generational barriers. She has been working for the last 30 years in children literature, where she took part on the training of school teachers; she has also founded centers of study and specialized magazines, has directed collections and taken part in reading plans. She is guest teacher in many graduate and posgraduate courses and invited author in congresses, seminars, fairs and meetings, in her country and abroad. Her books are subject of study in Argentinian, American and European Universities. Her writing won her the awards of Luis Tejada (1993), Fondo Nacional de las Artes (National Fund for the Arts) 2002, and in 2001 she was finalist of the Award Romulo Gallegos with her novel Lengua Madre. She was included in the Honour Lists of the IBBY, has been awarded the Iberoamerican SM Prize in 2009. Her work has been used as a base for short movies, musical and poetical shows, theatre adaptations and other events.

Inés Garland Argentina, 1960 Winner of the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis 2014 for Piedra, papel o tijera She works free lance and coordinates creative writing workshops. A jury from the National Arts’ Fund formed by Liliana Heker, Ana María Shua y Vicente Batista awarded her book Una Reina Perfecta in 2005. Several of the short stories in the book received Latin-american awards and the short story A Perfect Queen has been translated to English for the National Welsh Review. Her novel Piedra, papel o tijera was elected Best Novel of the Year by Alija (Children’s and Young people’s Literature Association). It has been translated to German as Wei ein unsichtbares Band.

Awards: Winner of the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis 2014 for Piedra, papel o tijera which is the most important prize for young adult literature in Germany (besides, Inés Garland is the first Latin-American writer in winning this prize). Her short stories’ book “Cerca de una ausencia” was awarded the second prize by the Fondo Nacional de las Artes 2005 (published under the title of “Una Reina Perfecta”). Her short stories have been published in several of “La mujer de mi vida” literary magazine’s issues and she was chosen for the section “El elegido” to celebrate the magazines’ fifth anniversary.

Maxama tells Daniel that in order to play football well he has to learn how to feel the toes of his feet. For this purpose, he provides him with a blue handkerchief to practice with and shows him how, by stretching and contracting his toes, he can roll the whole handkerchief. Maxama shows him more tricks, but what matters is that he teaches him to play with calmness and patience, he teaches him to manage and control his nerves. In this way a friendship develops between them and one day Maxama asks Daniel for help. The police have arrested him and want to deport him. Daniel, his parents, his school teacher and his schoolmates organize themselves and fight to avoid Maxama being deported. And they succeed!

“It is not fair” People get angry for no reason, and our ideas are important too, even if we are not grown-up and the crisis is not just a crisis for the banks and the countries, because my best friend has to go to Brazil to live and I can't do anything to stop it. Though maybe.... Mariú, the main character of this children's novel picks up a hard drive at a flea market so she can take it apart and see what is inside. But then she changes her mind and installs it in her mother's old computer to see if there are any documents on it and, to her surprise, she finds five documents which appear to contain a coded message. The book tells of her efforts to decipher it and how this distracts her from the sorrow she feels about her best friend Kyra's having to move to Brazil where her parents have found jobs. Finding the former owner of the hard drive at the flea market brings her the consolation of making a new friend, which in part makes up for losing Kyra, whom she fears she will never see again. The story is made up of parallel strands: a lovely story of childhood friendships and a plot with a certain suspense. The handling of the two elements is well coordinated and brings out the protagonist's concerns about pollution, unemployment, care for the environment, recycling, the wasting of natural resources and uncontrolled consumption. The important place of information technology in the relationship between the main characters will appeal to the readers for whom the work is intended.
"It is not fair" This is the sentence that Mariú keeps repeating through the novel to underline that the kid’s point of view is also important and that we should take them more seriously from time to time. Sometimes we forget that maturity, mixed up with the children’s innocence and curiosity create a perspective and a vision which is valid and necessary for the world we live in. Criterio de exposición de los temas: Está organizado de tal forma que la suma de los contenidos vertidos en los tres volúmenes comprenden una unidad práctica para el aprendizaje. Niveles: En relación a este aspecto, es necesario puntualizar que el ajedrez es un juego de abstracción, y en la medida que este aspecto esté más desarrollado, mayores serán las posibilidades de comprensión de los temas. Es por esto que el criterio de niveles en este curso apunta directamente a ello, y significa que la distribución en tres volúmenes responde más a los conocimientos adquiridos que a las posibilidades de comprensión en función de la edad del niño. Si el niño conoce, por ejemplo, el mate de las dos torres, podrá comprender y resolver problemas o ejercicios derivados de él, independientemente de su edad. En cada unidad se encontrarán 12 ejercicios que responden a tres niveles diferentes. Mario Levrero Uruguay 1940-2004 Jorge Mario Varlotta Levrero, born in Montevideo in 1940 and died there in 2004. Levrero was a photographer, bookseller comics script writer, humorist, crossword author, creator of brain games. In his later years, he directed a literary workshop.

Argentina, 1964 Studied Literature at the National University of Rosario. Between 1993 and 2004 he worked as a crime reporter for La Capital newspaper in Rosario, where he is currently the editor of Sunday supplement Señales de la cultura y la sociedad. He is also a coeditor of the site Bazar Americano and deputy editor of the arts magazine 32 Pies. He is a member of the organizing team of the Rosario International Poetry Festival and of the editorial board of the newspaper Diario de Poesía.
