AGENDA

Letter from the editor In fashion as other areas, change is the constant in Beijing. Trends from abroad exert a huge influence with the speed and savvy with which Beijingers absorb them ever increasing. The internet, growing number of fashion magazines, an explosion in international travel and huge number of returnees have been major factors helping locals keep up with styles from abroad. The more recent arrival of fast-fashion brands like Zara, H&M and Uniqlo has also had a major democratizing effect, allowing Beijingers to dress in line with global trends. Similarly, more concept-oriented boutiques like Wuhao, Fei Space, and Triple-Major allow trendsetters access to unique items to form a distinct fashion vocabulary. The way most people dress has indeed become more similar to the West, South Korea and Japan. Hopping from a 798 opening to a fashion party in Sanlitun, one can witness much more diversity and sophistication in the way people approach the way they dress than was on display five years ago. The last few years have seen greater interest in vintage, local designers, and less mainstream brands from the West. Innumerable subcultures and fashion cohorts have emerged that either relate to foreign ones or are more or less their own independent local entity. Observing the streets, visitors from out of town comment on how similar the locals look to people abroad. Often they ask, “Do Beijingers have their own style?”, as if every city must have a persona that can be easily summarized. One perspective is that Western styles may be introduced, but they disguise a Chinese heart. A product or person can be fully Chinese and part of a global structure. Another question might also be what is really “Western”? Examples of cultural goods propagated by Western countries but are created by people of nonWestern origin or using distinctly Oriental motifs abound. One thing for certain is that style, like everything else in Beijing, is changing frantically. Long since out are crowds uniformed in blue and gray, and what’s in is individuality as expressed through consumerism. No global cultural exchange has been richer or more multifaceted than that of China with the West. To come to any conclusions on a subject around which exists such a complex discourse seems far too daring.

Charles talks with Agenda to share some of the challenges in the fashion market and some of his favorite names in the Chinese design world.

Unique Boutique

Charles Wang, style selecter Interview by David Kuo, photo by Sui

Tell us about your fashion background. I moved to Beijing from Jiangsu Province in 2005 to work for a business company, but quit because it just wasn’t for me. So I then came to handle the business aspect of Dong Liang boutique which opened in 2009. We wanted to create a space to expose the public to emerging Chinese designers. I recently returned from Milan and Paris to do a bit of “field work” and attend some events.

more willing to experiment with brands and are looking for something unique. I always think the best compliment you can give a girl now is how unique her dress looks and Dong Liang really tries to offer a unique selection of the latest designs. What business challenges are you facing right now? Well, as a small business operating in two of the most expensive cities for retail space, rent is always a problem. Our sales have increased steadily over the years but it is difficult to keep pace with the ever increasing rent prices. But there’s not much we can do about that. Since opening our Beijing store in 2009 and the Shanghai store in 2011, there has been an increase in competition from other retailers who have seen

Who shops at Dong Liang? Our clients are usually high-income, fashion-conscious Chinese women between 25 and 40 years old. Most have traveled abroad before and are very aware of different trends and fashion of Europe, Asia and America. In China, men’s fashion accounts for only a tenth of the market so women are really driving sales. Chinese men are very loyal to a “The best compliment you can give a girl brand and the business types now is how unique her dress looks and Dong usually prefer super brands. A design FOR LIFE

Liu Lu’s style guide for Beijing Interview by Joana Melo, photo by Sui

Chinese designers are more and more in the spotlight and Luvon by Liu Lu is a definite winner. Spending most of her life studying abroad, Liu Lu was accepted to the best design school in the world and was won over by the elegance of Parisian style. She has now returned to China and Agenda got her lowdown on her brand, who’s into it and on her plans for the future.

What has got you to where you are now? When I was 16 I went to Switzerland to study at an American high school and after I graduated I went to Paris to study Fashion. Then I transferred to New York where I continued and finished my degree at Parson’s School of Design. The year I graduated I was the Gold Thimble award winner and after my graduation I didn’t go to a design house, opting instead to assist a very well-known Hollywood stylist who dressed celebrities such as Rihanna and Nelly Furtado. After the year spent working there, I decided I wanted to come back and start my own company. What is your brand all about? For two years now Luvon by Liu Lu has been promoting a new attitude towards life that represents the quintessence of the new woman, who dresses metrosexy, has achieved financial independence, loves the world around her, and is socially responsible. We want Luvon to reflect social and humanitarian elements in its designs for each upcoming season as to encourage the new woman to channel the power of her love of giving back, and to improve the world around her one small step at a time. Did you encounter any major setbacks in establishing your business in China? Of course I had problems. Since the industry chain in China is not really linked, as it is in Europe, you have to link everything yourself. One thing China is really good at is manufacturing so that was a good start but I haven’t really made it yet. We are on the right track at the moment but it will still take a while to work on our distribution department. When that is figured out I think we can say we have made it.

6

AGENDA

You won the Gold Thimble Award for your graduation work and had a very promising career abroad. What made you come back to China? I wanted to have my own company and at that time the question was whether I would start my company in New York or China. The Chinese fashion industry is growing but it’s not really booming yet and I think that’s the fun part, because when you are in a market that is still raw, it’s full of opportunity. Nobody can tell you that something is right or wrong because there is no pattern to follow and we are one of the first generations that are doing this. I decided that China would be the perfect place to follow my dreams but when I came back in 2009, people didn’t really understand the “designer” label, so it took some struggling to get my work across. What do you think of the Chinese Fashion Week? I think it’s interesting but it’s not mature yet. Fashion Week was first created as an easy way for spectators to make orders and with time it became more interesting and more artistic. But I think the Chinese Fashion Week only captures the artistic side, forgetting that inspiring people to make orders is also a great part of it, and that you have to sell your products. I think at the moment it’s pure performance. It is really more about the show than any interest in selling clothes. The whole reason why fashion shows were created was to sell products, and if you lose your key points there will be no reason to have a fashion show. What do you think about Chinese stars not really supporting Chinese fashion and attending international Fashion Weeks? I think “celebrity” is a label and it all depends how people want to be seen and marketed. If they want to be seen as someone superficial that goes to all those big shows, that’s their image and it’s up to them; but if a beautiful celebrity would want to have a patriotic image, she should be going to the local Chinese Fashion shows. That is why I wouldn’t like to see Luvon by Liu Lu become just another celebrity based brand. Although we have some stars wearing our clothes I don’t

want it to have the celebrity impact in our label. I want our label to be known for Chinese women wearing the clothes and identifying themselves with it. Is there any clothing that makes your teeth clench when you see it on the streets? Of course! I hate puffed jackets. No matter how cold it is I will never wear them and that comes from living in Paris: nobody there wears puffed jackets! If it’s your personal style and if that’s what you like, fine by me, but if you are wearing one of my pieces with a puffed jacket, you can be sure that I’ll advise you to come to my showroom and buy yourself another one...! Suit Up

Timothy Coghlan and Maosuit.com’s fashion insights Interview by David Kuo, photos by Janek Zdzarski

Australian Timothy Coghlan “I would always look around for shoes and blogger and fashion follower, styles that I couldn’t find back home. For has been documenting the me, it has always been about having unique fashion scene in China with clothes that nobody else has” his maosuit.com website since 2011, capturing the ups and downs and ins and outs of the fast- and luxury world here in China. A lot of the reports moving industry. He talks with Agenda about and news I was reading didn’t seem to be written the sartorial business in China and some of by knowledgeable people, so with maosuit.com I the struggles that emerging local designers aim to set the record straight. I just celebrated the one-year anniversary in March and over the past face in a fast expanding market. Tell us about your fashion background. I started as a sneaker collector and I loved having shoes that nobody else had. When I used to skateboard, I would get shoes from sponsors, and when I traveled, I would always look around for shoes and styles that I couldn’t find back home. For me, it has always been about having unique clothes that nobody else has. After that, I got into t-shirt printing for a short time with the goal of starting my own line. I’ve been in Asia for quite some time now, about 12 years, and I first came to Beijing in to study at Tsinghua for a year in 2001 and moved back to Beijing in 2004 after finishing my undergraduate degree in Australia. I wanted to have my own line here in China and tested the waters but found that I wasn’t yet ready to launch my own brand so I packed up and headed to Tokyo and spent five years there. In 2009, I moved back to Beijing to headhunt for luxury brands. Now I work full time for an international company that specializes in retail real estate across China. Why inspired your blog maosuit.com? I started my blog for a couple reasons. First, this blog serves an outlet for, and a space to, organize a lot of the thoughts I was having about fashion, brands, and the business of fashion and luxury here in China. Another reason I started it was because there was a lot of misinformation online regarding the fashion

8

AGENDA

year, I’ve taken my blog in a direction that focuses more on how fashion and luxury exist and influence Chinese society and the people around me through the lens of fashion. Most of traffic to my blog comes from industry guys looking to better understand what is happening on the ground. The name of my blog came from one of the most iconic pieces of Chinese fashion: the Mao suit, as it is known in the west, and the Zhongshan Zhuang here in China. Doing away with the Imperial garb and blending Japanese cadet uniforms with Western business suits, Sun Yet Sen created a fashion trend that is still with us today. Mao Zedong was quite partial to the Zhongshan suit and thus people in the west now associate the suit with Mao and communism. What are some of the fashion challenges in China? The main problem is building a brand and brand recognition. From my perspective working with real estate, retail space is highly important and competitive, and smaller designers cannot compete for space with international brands. These international brands, some of whom have opened their largest stores in Beijing, spend huge amounts on retail space, media and magazines, which again is something harder for emerging Chinese designers to do. There is also the pejorative nature of “Made in China”, which we often associate with low quality. “Designed in China” also faces some of

the same prejudices because Chinese designs are frequently just copies. One store in Sanlitun Village North called Brand New China features domestic designers and has set up a great retail space to showcase growing talent. The future of Chinese fashion looks prosperous. The growing middle class and consumer spending on luxury goods is something that we all have heard before. Something to consider is this budding first generation of Chinese designers. Although there have been Chinese designers who have been around for a long time, this is the first time that design as a career has really been explored. You have Chinese students going overseas to study fashion design who have dreams to start their own line. Is Shanghai still the Paris of China? Yes. The average person in Shanghai is better dressed than their Beijing counterpart and perhaps it is the city layout or the architecture in Shanghai that leads the sidewalk to serve as a catwalk, rather like Tokyo. This being said, Beijingers are more avant-garde and experimental with what they wear, and there is a lot of expression here in the capital’s fashion and that’s what I like. Fashion is an attitude and it is emotional, not just following the latest trends. While the offices of big designers and brands might be in Shanghai, Beijing is very important to the fashion industry because major fashion events are held here. For example at the end of March, Beijing hosted China Fashion Week, an exhibition for only Chinese brands and showcased many emerging Chinese designers. Any tips for our fashion-conscious readers? Don’t cover yourself from head to foot in logos! Where do you shop? I don’t do a lot of shopping actually. I usually look for my own fabric and design or get tailored clothes made. I do a lot of traveling and often pick up fabric I like. I love having something unique.

Stop seeing life in Black & White

Bénédicte Bezard makes things colorful Interview by Joana Melo, photo by Judy Zhou

The emotional connotations of color have been known to artists for centuries, with some having particularly strong receptivity to or feelings about particular shades and tones. Bénédicte Bezard has been playing with color ever since she can remember and, turning it into a business of her own as a home colorist, her pairing and great ideas are nothing short of imaginative and daring, With her in-demand sense of style, Agenda wanted to know more about the woman behind the brand. What’s your background in interior design? I was born in the South of France, in Toulouse, into an artistic but excruciatingly bourgeois family! My behavior and taste are Mediterranean, which is the best explanation why I love colors. I never specifically studied interior design; in fact, I went to business school. But then I began work in an events organization company in Paris and when you organize events you have to think about the setting, the place and the décor, so I started on small projects and realized that this was what I really wanted to do instead of business. I like communicating but, even in my own company, I don’t like the business part.

showroom, and that is usually also a starting point for me to get to know them better. My goal is to make you and your house happier. I even say that what I do is better than therapy! Do you still remember the first thing you designed? I seldom designed my own pieces before coming to China. Previously I bought them for my clients but when I arrived in Beijing, there was nothing. My house had a couple of pieces of furniture that went straight to the trash and I started to design accessories out of necessity. Pretty soon I was designing my own chairs and sofas, any piece with fabric and upholstery, then curtains, lampshades. This has changed, and grown into my current work, but you can still see some of my first style of chairs and stools in my showroom. Where do you get the inspiration for your clients? In addition to my client’s tastes and personality, the environment plays a big role: the space inside and out, and the amount and kind of light. It makes a difference if we are in a high-rise city apartment or a townhouse. Plants can make a difference, and even the season! It’s all an equation between environment and the clients’ taste. I don’t follow fashion, so sometimes what I do may surprise you. Usually you will get used to it, and then reach a point where you are very pleased. In my most immodest moments I hope I am like Kenzo or Lacroix when they began, making fashion instead of following it.

What does a “home colorist” do exactly? A home colorist suggests colors for your home – paint schemes, curtains, furniture, accessories, and lighting - all in relation to your space and to your own tastes. If you want to have colors in your home and you are not really sure which ones, or if you are too busy or too afraid to do it I understand you have traveled a lot. What yourself, you can call me and tell me what kind have you learned from your travels? I lived in of person you are and what you like and don’t Guatemala for three years, where I was inspired like, and we’ll take it from there. It’s a bit like to work with fabrics because of the many small feng shui but with colors. Some colors soothe you, others make you energetic, and I believe in “I like harmony, and harmonizing colors the benefits different colors makes me happy. For me it, having a sense bring. I can see how people of color and how it works has always felt react when they come into my almost automatic”

“My goal is to make you and your house happier. I even say that what I do is better than therapy! ” communities there where the women do marvelous embroidery, playing fantastically with colors. Nearby Mexico was a lesson in daring with colors (and life). In Africa I discovered a riot of regionally printed fabric, all imaginative, some of it stunning if placed in compositions made of fabric from elsewhere, a collage in textile. I actually have a lot of fabrics coming from India right now, which I love because it is a whole new sensibility. But, always, for counterpoint, I return to Paris for the highest quality fabrics, especially for furniture. Have you had any design experiences that did not turn out so well? In the south of Spain, I designed the interior of a sailing yacht for a mixed American and Mexican couple. It was a success for the woman but the man had to take a deep breath before he could accept it. For men sometimes I can be a little too much. But after a while they learn to enjoy what I do. It’s like appreciating a painting; you have to train your eyes before you can understand and love it. What hurdles have you had when establishing your business in Beijing? Chinese style is slightly different. For example, I get the feeling that paintings that do not produce emotion are preferred. But I produce things that are difficult to be indifferent to. Many Chinese clients also go for the brand, even specifically seeking products made outside China. I have also had occasional problems with being copied here. There’s not much I can do about that except to keep creating pieces that are absolutely unique, each one different from the last, with my label on it, in expectation that the copiers’ products will look shabby and dull in comparison. Any practical advice that the common reader could use when it comes to their house? Be more adventurous. Say nay to the grey. Color is good for you and your kids. And Bénédicte is here to help!

the List It seems like just yesterday, design houses and all major magazines were giving us a sneak peak on the next fall/ winter collections, while graciously still playing with this season’s trends. But while fashion might seem simple when we have a stylist with us, making sure every seam is in line, this is not so in real life, for most of us at least! Agenda is proud to present some fashion snafus everyone should be aware of, and which crop up all too often on the Beijing streets.

Fashion No-No’s

Style faux pas for the smart woman Text by Joana Melo

Clean view Look how pretty your miniskirt is! And those shorts are amazing too - if it weren’t for the fact that the tops of your pantyhose are peaking out, it would be perfect. Now in all seriousness, if the limits of your hosiery are showing that’s nearly as bad as having a skirt pulled up in the middle of a presentation. Try unmarked stockings (the official name is sheerto-waist pantyhose) and though they can be harder to find, regular brands of women’s undergarments regularly carry them. They might be a bit pricier than regular ones but they save you the embarrassment. Or just skip the trouble and use longer garments. Strut your stuff Yes, you have a Valentino limited edition dress, your friend only got the cheap knock off from the local market - but she still looks better than you! Bottom line is, it doesn’t really matter what you own or what

12

AGENDA

you are wearing if, at the end of the day, you hide in a corner or stay sitting at the table when everyone is working the room. If you have enough confidence, you can be dressed in a garbage bag and still be able to pull it off since fashion is firstly a state of mind before being brands, clothes and labels. So don’t spend RMB 15,000 on a pair of shoes without making sure they (and you) are really worth it. Match up We have two dead cells clusters in our body of which we take advantage. One is our hair and the other is our nails. If you would never leave the house with a bad hair moment, why would you do the same with your nails? From chipped to uneven lengths, it’s better to admit you have short and unpainted fingertips than to hide that longer pinky nail or the whole chipped paint job on your next networking event. So next time

your nail breaks, don’t fuss about it and just cut them all - but please, not in the subway! I can see you! When I was in my teens, the mother of a friend gave me some invaluable advice. “One thing you need for life,” she said, “is a set of flesh colored underwear”. While it seems obvious, I wish she could have given it to a few more people. In spring white comes out of our closet and unfortunately regular brands skimp on fabric quality to give lower prices - and while the accidental strap here or there is not something to bother about, things change when passersby can identify the brand you are wearing underneath. What can you do to avoid everyone seeing your favorite undergarments? Visit the nearest lingerie store and get them in flesh tone. They might be a bit more boring than all the others but being boring sometimes pays off, big time. Muffin tops These don’t necessarily come from eating too many muffins (although it can be a contributing factor). The Muffin Top look occurs when wearing jeans that are too tight or too low, and while many of you might think that bigger jeans will prevent this - you are partly right but do you want to be pulling them up every ten minutes? The key is, wear clothing that fits not only your size but your body shape (brands like GAP and Levi’s have jeans created especially for certain body types) and stay away from both low rise jeans and tight tops that cling to you.

McQueen feathered shoes. If you have already purchased them, wear them around the house to break in those new heels so you won’t fall on your face the first day you take them out. “Ms. Smarty-pants” Every girl knows how time consuming (and hard!) it is to put on a pair of normal cut jeans inside knee-high boots for winter. Not only does it leave our calves looking twice as thick, it also comes undone after a time. Thus, someone remembered that leggings exist but, unfortunately, most don’t have the same thickness than normal jeans and those that do start to sag two hours later. Although everyone appreciates how comfortable and how much warmer they are than most of run of the mill hosiery, I would like to remind everyone that leggings are not pants. They never were and never will be considered as such. So if you are to wear them, pair them with a long t-shirt, a jersey dress or just under a pair of shorts. Not everyone will want to know exactly how your body is dressed underneath.

Seasonal allergies Yes, everyone is excited about Spring/Summer trends. Peplums, mint and sorbet-like colors, scalloped edges on skirts, and dresses that remind you of the sea and prints until the eye can see (pun intended). But have you seen next season’s accessories? Trimmed fur and feathers on shoes, the most amazing bags we have seen just yet, black and brown leather and more. But please let me encourage you to make sure your outfit comes from a similar time. Don’t wear a mint green peplum dress with a fur trimmed bag or some

Can you tell us about your background and what got you into interior design to begin with? I entered college as a foreign language major but after 1 1/2 years or so, really found my interest waning. I had always wanted to be in the art school, so decided to change majors and get my degree in art. I also participated in an independent study program in art history abroad while in college. This was very influential for me and confirmed I had made the right decision. When did you first work in China, and what type of work did you do? Spotlight With China developing its “soft” industries like leisure and knowledge based companies, it’s no surprise that the design and manufacture of higher-end consumer items like jewelry are finally coming into their own. Zhang Yi founded Asyoulikeit jewelers, and tells Agenda about her inspiration to enter the field and her desire to push Chinese jewelry to the next level – and beyond.

JewElry, As You Like It

Zhang Yi goes for gold Text by Rachel Chen, photo by Judy Zhou

What’s your background in jewelry and fashion? My background is nothing really special. I went to the UK to study International Business Management. After I graduated from that program, I registered for the FGA program which is the Fellows of the Gemological Association of Great Britain, and I got certified as a jeweler. I stayed in UK for almost 10 years before coming back to China.

Street in London, I saw this gorgeous ring in an antique shop. When I got back home I just couldn’t stop thinking about it, so eventually I went back and bought it. When I first started the business, I was only into antique jewelry. Why do you name your store Asyoulikeit? As You Like It is one of Shakespeare’s plays and I feel that this name reflects exactly how I feel about the ring, because it’s a piece of antique art which cannot be remade in modern times, just like the play. The destiny with the ring brought me into the jewelry industry. It was totally love at first sight and that’s exactly how I feel about it.

How did you get into the jewelry industry and start your own business? I think all girls love jewelry. I’m really interested in this industry and it all started with a ring that I discovered, which I loved so much that it has become our logo. It’s an antique ring which is a famous “The destiny with the ring brought me into design from 1880. One day the jewelry industry. was at the time. I love Asia and “Beijing” to me sounded like a very nice word and like nothing I had never heard because in France we say “Pékin” so I had never connected the two!

“Since I opened a shop I have had more Chinese customers. They have more money, independence, and freedom, and they are now wanting more individual, personalized and meaningful items”

What was the hardest piece you have ever created? What I consider difficult is not to make the actual piece but to really understand the request of the client. When clients can express themselves and have a clear idea what they want, it’s quite easy; however, a Chinese costumer wanted an engagement ring for his girlfriend and he didn’t had a specific idea of what he wanted. He was looking for something traditional but not too traditional, a bit modern but not too modern and we spent a long time communicating and making models and eventually we figured out what he wanted. It took me two weeks of work with him calling everyday with new ideas. It normally takes me an hour!

but now, although there are still a few doing that, most are designing their own products. Chinese companies started pretty much from scratch and of course it’s going to take time to fully establish themselves.

What do you think about Chinese jewelers? During the time I’ve lived here, I’ve seen the evolution of the trade. When I arrived there was nothing, and it was hard to find tools and materials because nobody really did jewelry in China, but as time went by several jewelry companies appeared. At the beginning they were merely taking a catalog and replicating pieces

If you weren’t making jewelry, what would you be doing? Other than spending more time with my child? Maybe I would do something in art or sculpting, or then again maybe something totally different such as business. For me jewelry allows me to do all that, especially in Beijing. I have absolutely no idea what else I would be doing - this is my passion.

Do you have more Chinese or Western costumers? Why might that be? I am having more and more Chinese costumers, specifically Chinese businesswomen. When I started I was working at home and all my clients were foreigners, since I was mainly referred to by friends of friends, but since I opened a shop I have had more Chinese costumers. I was actually originally just a friend and customer. He asked me to join him when he saw it starting to grow and he knew he was going to need a partner to help. I have some F&B experience from back in the States but mostly I wanted to get involved because I believed in what Adam was trying to create, and I really needed someplace great to eat in Beijing. Barbeque is one of those universally popular foods and seems like a no-brainer for a restaurant in Beijing, yet there have historically been so few. Why do you think this is? American barbeque is a tough one – it’s one of those foods that require a lot of time and love to do right. Plus so many of the ingredients and supplies are not easy to find here in China.

ingredients are from overseas? It’s not just the ingredients but also so many of the tools that we’re using. We need to use those in order to produce the most authentic flavors and atmosphere that we can. From the Valasic Pickles to the wide range of American beers, wines and bourbons that we offer. Most stuff we make ourselves fresh daily. It’s been a fantastic first year of operations for Home Plate – you’ve been featured in a lot of press and won awards – to what do you attribute this success? We were all blown away by the outpouring of support – I guess it’s about getting it right offering the highest quality product while still being able to give value. It is a lot of hard work but it’s such a good feeling when you see how many people are totally loving the food and the little oasis that Home Plate is in this busy city for so many. Plus it’s incredibly fun meeting all the great folks from around the world that patronize Home Plate BBQ and hearing their stories. What’s the best barbeque you’ve ever had (other than your own)? What does the rest of 2012 have in store for Home Plate? Where do you see it headed in your wildest dreams? 2012 has already been a busy year, but Adam and I are working on some great new things to come look forward to an even bigger 2013. Making it in Beijing

Founder Currie Lee on D-SATA’s mission Text by Jessica Zhang, photo by Judy Zhou

We heard that you come with a very international background, born in Korea, raised in Canada, educated in America and China, married in Italy and honeymooning in Greece. Why did you decide to give up Law in New York and start a fashion business in Beijing? I actually moved to Beijing six years ago to pursue a Master’s in Chinese Law at Peking and Tsinghua University as I had visited Beijing in 1995 for a few months with my father who was here on sabbatical. Then I fell in love with China’s culture and legal history! In what ways do you think Beijing is different from other cities and what do you think about the fashion industry here? To me, Beijing is similar to New York whereas Shanghai is similar to Los Angeles. My two favorite uncles lived in New York and Los Angeles when I was little, so I would visit both cities and love both equally as I do Shanghai and Beijing. Beijing is, however, a bit different regarding the fashion industry in that

Also, many friends that I met at Tatler, Insider or International Club events tend to prefer niche independent brands rather than high fashion multinational brands. They are looking for conversation pieces as statement pieces rather than logo pieces which are much too common. Korean fashion is very well regarded, so why did you choose Beijing as your business starting point? Beijing is home now but also it was in Beijing that I was inspired to change careers from an attorney to designer- actually it was a girlfriend who was a retired Vogue editor and consultant for many luxury brands who insisted I pursue a career in design. South Korean fashion tends to be more about following the trends from the runways in Paris, Milan and New York rather than setting their own trends, as in Beijing. It is also more commercial than in China where fashion is seen as a form of art as evident in Beijing Fashion Week.

Did you get inspired from the environmental crises? Actually, my inspiration comes from the tribal chief of a Bulang minority village who was the grandfather of a classmate of mine at Peking University. I was mentioning to him that I wished to visit some minority villages and experience their lifestyle. He brought us on foot to see quite a few different minority village families that were close family friends. Although none had modern amenities like plumbing or electricity, they were absolutely generous and gracious as hosts and presented me with exquisite handicrafts, made with 100% natural materials and, of course, 100% love! The grandmother at a Miao minority family was drying corn kernels on a black cloth, which inspired my SuSu collection of clutch bags; and the chief of the Bulang minority village presented me with a musical instrument made from snake skin, after they’d had snake for dinner. This inspired my Kimi collection and D-SATA’s belief in “waste not, want not”, by using skins from animals that are also consumed as food sources. Which designers do you like? How: Why How We Do Anything Means Everything by Dov Seidman In his book How, Dov Seidman explains why behavior (as opposed to more fashionable management notions of engagement or motivation) is the key to organizational success. The simple thesis of How is that in today’s totally wired world, you are set apart by how you conduct yourself. Everyone is so much more transparent and connected than ever before. As a result, so many more people can now see more deeply into what you do and into your company’s operations and tell so many more other people about it via the internet – without any editor or any filter. Therefore “how” you live your life, “how” you conduct your business, and “how” you say you’re sorry (or don’t’) matter now more than ever. Seidman presents a hopeful and positive future where lying and obfuscation are less possible and ultimately unacceptable because there are fewer places to hide.

MY PERFECT DAY IN BEIJING

Ron Rossi, Owner Rossi International Marketing Consultants / Display Designer at Lily’s Antiques Photo by Judy Zhou

My perfect day would start off with a good cup of coffee. Then, since I haven’t been able to locate my landlord for over two months, I register with the rental agent and let them know. They, in turn, tell me I don’t have to pay my rent until we can find him. Great! I then run off to meet a friend at the Handin-Hand Mall in Fengtai. No better place to look for clothes and anything else you can imagine. All at a price so low there is no reason to bargain. After an hour or two we then head over to Da Lian Huo Shao to taste some of the best stuffed fried wheaten pancakes in Beijing. True, authentic Beijing style – which you can’t get anywhere else. Perfect with their hot and sour soup. After lunch it is time to take a quick run out to Gaobeidian and visit Lily’s Antiques to check out the responses on one of the latest rooms we designed. I then pop upstairs to look in on the new Wei Wei Art Gallery and see the newest art exhibition just installed. Then it is time for a bit more shopping. Yashow Market is a must. I can visit with my favorite shoe guy or possibly stop in to look for a new bag for my laptop. With all this shopping I need to kickback for a bit and grab a cup of coffee at Starbucks in the North Village. It’s quiet and peaceful and a good place to sit and think about what to do next. Maybe it is time for a haircut, so I head over to the Eric of Paris Salon. Eric has agreed to cut my hair and there is nothing better. Especially as we both sip wine while he snips away at it. It is then time for dinner but not before stopping off at Belita Jewelry just downstairs from Eric’s to see what new designs Liza has created. Then I head on over to Sanlitun Soho and the new Blue Balcony restaurant there to enjoy some Mediterranean style cooking. It’s almost like being in Greece. After a leisurely dinner we will end the evening over at Kai Bar where the drinks are
