AGENDA

Letter from the editor Please allow me, as the song goes, to introduce myself: I’m Mike Cormack, the new managing editor of Agenda. I was previously the Beijing editor of Tianjin Plus magazine and the senior copywriter for the advertising agency Dentsu. I love writing and I love Beijing - which I hope you, the readers, will come to feel. We are very excited about Agenda and believe it addresses an aspect of Beijing life which rarely gets the attention it deserves: the business lifestyle of the foreign professional, manager and executive. As Beijing grows into a major world city to rank alongside Tokyo and London, it’s an extraordinary place to be. We hope you feel the same way and that what we do helps you feel part of that. Any healthy entity must be able to handle change and development, though these are stress-inducing phenomena. This is true both for individuals and for organizations – if they can’t handle transition, things can get messy. Having just started, I’m aware of how companies can and must change over time, as with us as individuals. This isn’t always easy, but it’s essential for development and (hopefully) growth. Of course, there’s always the risk of the transition being too difficult, the stress being too much to bear, and problems thus arising. Stress is a major contributor to ill-health, and in the roaring pace of Beijing it is vital that we pay attention to both ourselves and to the relationships and holistic values which make us who we are. In this issue of Agenda, we hear from experts on healthcare in Beijing. Their stories, opinions and great knowledge are fascinating in two particular ways: first, in terms of the advice and learning that they share in this most critical field; and second, how the healthcare sector in Beijing is developing at great (if unsurprising) speed. The parallel seems to be with the international education sector perhaps 10-15 years ago, and given the remarkable development in that area since 2000, the future of Beijing healthcare is fascinating to consider. But hey - enough of my yakking! Let’s boogie.

A Fresh Focus

Aier Intech Eye Hospital’s Dr Zhou Jihong explains the benefits of laser eye surgery Interview by Jerry Chan; photo by Nature Zhang

Tired, strained eyes are a common ailment for working professionals – long hours staring at screens and monitors can exact a heavy toll. Beijing’s Aier Intech Eye Hospital is one of the few medical facilities in China specializing in laser eye surgery (LASIK), which treats patients with myopia, farsightedness and astigmatism. Agenda spoke with Dr Zhou Jihong, Director of Intech’s LASIK Center and a refractive specialist, to get a better understanding of how the surgery and hospital work. How did you come to work at Aier Intech Eye Hospital? I was born in Beijing, but my hometown is in Nanjing. I’ve lived in Beijing since graduating from the Suzhou University medical college. I had a dream of becoming an ophthalmologist so I chose to join Aier Intech Eye hospital, where I currently serve as the Director of the LASIK Center.

the List It’s a sign of our times that clean, breathable air has become a commodity. But enjoying a healthy home environment does not have to be solely an indulgence for those who can afford pricey purifiers – research has shown that there are numerous plants that can make a considerable improvement on the air quality in your home. Agenda gets green-fingered and lists the best and most readily available varieties around town.

Breathing Green

Common houseplants that can help clear the air Compiled by Jerry Chan

Aloe 芦荟 (ru(2) hui(4)) Not only is Aloe great for your skin, it is also highly effective when it comes to filtering out formaldehyde and benzene (a byproduct of paints, cleaning agents and cigarettes). Leave it in a sunny spot near a window.

Boston Fern 波斯顿蕨 (bo(1) si(1) dun(4) jue(2)) This tropical plant grows quickly and loves bright, sunlit rooms (with indirect light) and can not only remove common indoor pollutants but also humidifies the air (a musthave for Beijing).

Areca Palm 风尾竹 (feng(4) wei(3) zhu(2)) These upright perennials are good for just about any room in the house (shoulder high plants are recommended) and are good for filtering out formaldehyde and xylene. They also efficiently convert CO2 to oxygen.

Chinese Evergreen 广东万年青 (guang(3) dong(1) wan(4) nian(2) qing(1)) A native of southern China, this plant is thought to not only bring good luck, but also to be great for purifying indoor air. They are extremely easy to grow and do well in low light environments.

Azaleas 杜鹃花 (du(4) juan(1) hua(1)) Azaleas can purify the air from irritants present in insulation, as well as in foam carpet pads. They grow well in cool areas so keep them away from your heater.

14

AGENDA

Chrysanthemum 菊花 (ju(2) hua(1)) As well as making a tasty tea, chrysanthemums filter out benzene molecules released in the air by plastics, detergents and tobacco smoke.

Marginata 马尾铁树 (ma(3) wei(3) tie(3) shu(4)) Alternately known as “Janet Craig” and the “Striped Dracaena,” these plants can grow up to fifteen feet and need medium light. They are effective at filtering out formaldehyde, benzene and xylene – but take care with your pooch, as they are poisonous to dogs. Mother-in-Law Tongue 虎皮兰 (hu(3) pi(2) lan(2)) Also known as “Snake Plants,” Mother-inLaw Tongue is the perfect bedroom plant as it converts CO2 to oxygen at night. Around six waist-high plants per person are recommended. Money Plant绿萝 (lu(4) luo(2) Also known as “Golden Pothos” and “Devil’s Ivy,” this common houseplant is in the top three formaldehyde filters. Be sure to water it less frequently in cold weather. Peace Lily 百合花 (bai(3) he(2) hua(1)) If there were ever a plant designed for Beijing winters, this is it. Peace Lilies are tolerant of cold and humidify the air. They are also excellent at removing contaminants and pollutants like benzene, formaldehyde and acetone. But keep them out of the reach of pets and small children; the plant is poisonous if ingested. Rubber Plant 橡胶树 (xiang(4) pi(2) shu(4)) Another tropical plant well-suited for apartments, the rubber plant removes formaldehyde and looks great with its sleek and shiny leaves. Spider Plant 吊兰 (diao(4) lan(2)) A native of South America, Spider Plants are extremely easy to grow and great for removing carbon dioxide and can also filter out formaldehyde and xylene. They are especially effective around kitchen gas stoves. Sprouts 芽 (ya (2)) Believe it or not, the lowly sprout is fantastic at producing oxygen. Buckwheat, sweet pea and sunflower sprouts can all do the trick and are tasty to boot.

Where to Buy Your Plants: Beijing Lai Tai Flower Market and Trading Center. 9 Maizidian Xilu, Chaoyang District (6463 6554) 北京莱太花卉交易 中心,朝阳区麦子店西路9号 Liangma Flower Market. South bank of Liangma River, 758 Dongsanhuan Beilu, Chaoyang District (6504 2443) 亮马花卉 市场,朝阳区东三环北路758号,燕莎商 城南,亮马河南岸

the List Beijing is a paradise for food lovers, but it’s also a mixed blessing – unhealthy temptations abound on the restaurant tables and store shelves of our city. All too often the kinds of foods we consume are an afterthought, but if you’re not careful, years of unhealthy eating can add up to a dismal demise. Agenda has dug up some of the best books on nutrition to help get your health and life back on track.

FUELLING MIND AND BODY

Eight great books on diet and nutrition By Joana Melo and Jerry Chan

Clean by Alejandro Junger, M.D Dr Junger’s NYT best-seller, Clean explains how many of our everyday aches, pains and inflammations are food-related and makes a convincing case for detoxifying through a controlled diet. The three-week regimen consists of diet-based cleansing and simple meditation and breathing techniques that purportedly will diminish the everyday aches, pains and inflammations of modern urban life. Information on supplements and recipes for shakes, soups and simple, solid meals is also provided, and the book is worth reading even if you never fully undertake the diet. Eat, Drink and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating by Walter C. Willett and P.J. Skerrett In their 2001 book, Walter C. Willett and P.J. Skerrett of the Harvard Medical School debunk a

host of incorrect assumptions and outdated recommendations – including misconceptions about fats, carbohydrates, proteins and dairy products – from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food guide pyramid. They also propose their own dietary recommendations based on the latest research and findings from around the world. Recipes and menu suggestions are included in the back. Healing with Whole Foods: Asian Traditions and Modern Nutrition by Paul Pitchford Highly regarded by students of Chinese medicine and acupuncture, Paul Pitchford’s book lays out explicit guidelines on nutritional basics and tips on how to transition your diet to protect yourself against the dangers of modern life. The author gives more than 300 mostly vegetarian recipes, while also providing what he calls “regeneration diets”

for those who have more serious illnesses. The information on Chinese medicine and its use in diagnosing physiological “imbalances” is also useful. The Blending Book: Maximizing Nature’s Nutrients by Ann Wigmore While drinking smoothies may seem specific to summer heat, Ann Wigmore swears by them. The nutritionist found that by blending unprocessed foods, the enzymes, vitamins and minerals that constitute smoothies are easier to digest. Additionally, because the food is already in a liquid state, our body is less stressed when digesting – an issue in our modern diet that is a major cause for various health disorders. This book explains how blending will help you and has over 100 recipes for easy and delicious smoothies and soups, along with deserts and sauces for healthier ways to entertain guests. The pH Miracle: Balance Your Diet, Reclaim Your Health by Shelley Redford Young and Robert O. Young There is no need to worry about cholesterol, calories, blood pressure any more, according to Shelley and Robert Young’s diet approach. The pH Miracle is based on the notion that you can control your health by adjusting your acidic or alkaline food intake, which, if done right, will allow your body to achieve a balance and thus minimize most of your ongoing health concerns. Flavorsome recipes to help you use your new pH knowledge are included, along with materials to help you memorize the acidity or alkalinity of every ingredient in your kitchen. The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who’ve Lived the Longest by Dan Buettner Dan Buettner set out into the wild looking for “Blue Zones,” certain regions of the world where people outlive and have more energy than most of the population. As he discovered, a long healthy life is neither an accident nor a gift: it depends on a lifestyle of good habits. Apparently,

you can live ten years longer, just by making minor modifications. Through his book, Dan investigates the main causes for these longer life spans and gives you the key to follow them. Just by following nine simple but lifechanging habits, common to all the people he interviewed, you can also turn your town into a blue zone. Macrobiotic Path to Total Health by Michio Kushi and Alex Jack “Macrobiotics” was believe it or not first used in a health food context in 1797, describing a science aimed at perfecting and prolonging human life. The macrobiotic diet has been around since then but only in recent years come to public consciousness, mostly thanks to Michio Kushi, the father of modern macrobiotics who studied in Japan and exported his ideas to the USA. In this book, Michio joins Alex Jack to introduce macrobiotics, creating an encyclopedic compendium of fundamental insights, recipes, remedies and menus that will help you become healthier and happier. The Hip Chick’s Guide to Macrobiotics: A Philosophy for achieving a Radiant Mind and a Fabulous Body by Jessica Porter Many believe that macrobiotics is about dieting and losing those unwanted extra pounds, but Jessica Porter’s book explains that we should approach this philosophy not only to lose weight but to achieve peace of mind. She tackles exercise, recipes and the upsides of such a nutritional regime while providing insight into one of the oldest diets in the world. With her no-nonsense philosophy and jokes scattered through the pages, you will be itching to hit the kitchen, equipped with a better understanding of what macrobiotics can do to strengthen your mind and body while enjoying the pure pleasure of food.

Different: Escaping the Competitive Herd by Youngme Moon Youngme Moon’s Different is a book for “people who don’t read business books.” Her message is “Going tit for tat and adding features, augmentations, and gimmicks to beat the competition has the perverse result of making you like everyone else.”She identifies the outliers, the mavericks, who reject orthodoxy. In fact, almost every success story over the past two decades has been an exception to the rule. Go to your computer and compare AOL and Yahoo! with Google. The former pile on feature upon feature to their home pages, while Google is like an austere boutique, dominating a category filled with “extras.” Different shows how to succeed in a world where conformity reigns, but exceptions rule.

My perfect Day in Beijing

Bharadwaj Pudipeddi, Regional Manager for Product Strategy, Lenovo Text by Mike Cormack, photo courtesy of Bharadwaj Pudipeddi

As my work demands extensive travel, I always try my best to be in Beijing for the weekends. Coming from a tropical part of the world (India), I like spending my weekends outdoors around the Gulou area. Weekend and brunches go hand in hand for me. Café Zarah is my first preferred venue for a simple yet filling brunch. I love the laid back atmosphere, soothing music in the background and let’s not forget the large glass doors for people watching. Then I would stroll in the hutongs - getting lost in them is not a bad thing at all. That’s how a couple of friends and I ended up discovering the beer heaven – Great Leap Brewing. Though it’s now temporarily closed, since this is my “perfect day,” it would be open again, and the weather perfect for sitting outside. A pleasant afternoon, clear skies, sipping some of the famous Honey Ma ale and catching up with my buddies - that’s what I call bliss. Mr. Shi’s Dumplings, tucked away in Baochao Hutong - this place is one of the best dumpling restaurants that I have ever tried. Undoubtedly it’s my first preference for dinner in this vicinity. With an amazing choice of fillings and cheap beer to accompany a good meal, it does not require any further description. I would then head over to Apothecary in Nali Patio to try some of their outstanding cocktails. I love to watch a good mixologist in action and to savor the results; the Dark and Stormy is my personal favorite.
