AGENDA
Letter from the editor Design and creativity weren’t really on the top of the list of reasons expatriates moved to Beijing for a decade ago. Most came here to work for multinational companies, and some were happily surprised to see the rise of 798, maybe bought a piece of art there and went to see Chinese rock and punk bands in Wudaokou. Of course Beijing is the cultural center of China with all its conservatories for music and dance and art schools, but this world was inaccessible for most of us not least because it never really tried to show itself to the western world. Today the situation is much different, and creativity, design and innovation are present everywhere. Over the past few years the Chinese government has invested heavily in a push to move China from “factory of the world” to “studio for the world”. New school curriculums are being designed to help improve the country’s hundreds of design and art schools to produce ever better talent. Major design and innovation events like Icograda or the Beijing Design Week are being organized to bring together the world’s leading designers and China’s leading businesses and students. Now more and more expats do move to China and Beijing for the potential they see in the creative industries. Being a creative worker myself in this huge and fast growing country, I have come to observe and admire the rise of creativity around me. In my years working in advertising in China, one of the most important tasks was to recruit talented creative thinkers. It seemed for a while much easier to import talent from abroad, in people who had experience and high international standards. However I soon realized that there was a huge amount of young, hungry and highly talented writers and designers out there who were eager to prove themselves to the world. Now I feel I find myself in the middle of a massive tsunami of creativity and emerging popular culture that is growing beneath our feet, and I can tell that it will reach gigantic dimensions. We are right there, at the crest of this wave, being part of a creative revolution which will over the next decades influence much of the world’s innovation and economic progress.

Agenda interfaced with Kou to learn the rhyme and reason behind these websites, and what Western companies should consider when their web presence reaches the shores of China.

A Blueprint for beijing
Anu Leinonen Designs The Buildings You Admire Text by Joana Melo, photo by Judy Zhou
OMA are a world-renowned architecture and urban design group. Based in the Netherlands and China, they have designed and produced some of the most iconic buildings in the cityscape. Anu Leinonen is an Finnish OMA architectural associate who has been working on the construction of the famous CCTV headquarters. She took the time to tell Agenda about how she gets concepts from blueprint to building.

What about OMA’s counterpart, AMO? What is it and what do you aim to achieve with it? AMO does everything but architecture. It is sometimes needed as a research arm to produce the analyses for a following architectural project. The 2008 Olympics was the big showdown of iconic architecture; after that the scene has sobered up. The National Museum is quite classical, and the new commercial developments such as Soho Sanlitun or Galaxy draw now the attention. In creating projects, what is the process of taking a building from concept to completion? How long do these steps take? The CCTV HQ’s design started in Rotterdam, where we developed the competition proposal together with our Chinese collaborators. The project stayed under OMA’s direction for one year, after which it was handed over to our Chinese partner. They completed the detailed construction drawings. Altogether the design took over two years of coordination and production. Which of your works from around the world are you most proud of? OMA’s work is quite well known, but the newest building, Millstein Hall in Cornell University, was just opened this week. It hasn’t been widely publicized yet, and it’s worth a visit to upstate New York. Other recent beautiful completion is the Rothschild bank in London. Who have been your major influences (in design and architecture), and why? I would possibly need to list all the classic and modern leading architects, since they all in some ways have influenced me. But as an alternative I am trying to absorb influences from unknown, young or vernacular architects. It’s fascinating to find beauty in unexpected places. Do you have any advice for young architects that would like to be involved with OMA? OMA needs young, creative, thinking and polemical architects. OMA is about collaboration, and creating the project as a team, and as our internal slogan goes, even the students building the models can have an influence on the final design.

Oldtimers (with over five years in Beijing) may recollect when Haidian was nothing but fields. Whether you are into gravity-defying architecture or have a more minimalist style, Agenda has noted the top iconic buildings from the last couple of years.

China Central Television (CCTV) 中央电视 台总部大楼 Featuring two leaning towers that turn at 90 degrees before meeting in the air, the gravity-defying nature of the CCTV headquarters has given it great fame and notoriety. The structure comprises 389,079m2 of floor space over 44 floors, linked by about 75 elevators. The building campus includes the Television Cultural Center (TVCC), which went up in flames back in 2009 due to an unfortunate fireworks incident. The “Big Boxer Shorts” (大裤衩) had its official opening in 2008 but has been empty since then, while its sister tower is being put back into shape. As the site of the 2008 Summer Olympics opening and closing ceremonies, the National Stadium was built to hold up to 91,000 seats with a total area of 254,600m2. Although nicknamed the “Bird’s Nest,” the stadium’s architecture was inspired by Chinese pottery, the random patterns of the natural world, with a circular shape meant to represent “heaven.” Architects also had to think ingeniously to comply with complex seismic safety rules. It may be most famous for its distinctive red roof, but the building also features more than 200 elevators, escalators or moving walkways to help travelers get to their destination as fast as possible, along with massive windows that flood the concourses with daylight. Zhongguancun Christian Church 中关村 基督教堂 Located in our own Silicon Valley, this church was finished on May 31, 2007, and is a replacement for the previous one, which lacked sufficient capacity to accommodate the congregations. The striking 4,000 m2 structure won a World Architecture Festival (WAF) award in 2008. The building itself features commercial spaces on the ground floor with the church upstairs, while the exterior is wrapped in a system of vertical white rods which allows parishioners a glimpse outside but also lets just enough daylight trickle through. Spotlight The antiques industry, like many, went through very difficult times prior to the reform period. Lily’s Antiques is a terrific example of Beijing shaking itself down and rediscovering its heritage, in the form of household antiques and artifacts. Quan Lily has taken this nascent industry and developed a flourishing modern furniture design and production company to go with her Lily’s Antiques brand. Agenda met her to hear how China is reclaiming her sense of interior design.

Quan Lily of Lily’s Antiques beautifies Beijing interiors Text by Mike Cormack, photo by Sui
How did you get started in the antiques industry? I got started in the antiques business through my ex-husband, in 1998. At the time, the antiques business wasn’t really an approved industry. It was legal, but it was difficult. We had a place near Wangfujing and at that time, if any foreigners came down the street, all the vendors would hide! But with the opening up policy, things became much easier and we were able to grow. We moved to a 5000m2 building with three floors in Gaobeidian in 2008 so you can see the interest in antiques is strong in China now. You started out small and have worked your way up to a flourishing business. To what do you attribute your success? I think it’s definitely down to my team. Most of them have been with me for

I work with buyers throughout China. Some are former customers with whom I have long term relationships. Some of the best buyers are from Guizhou, and also from Jiangsu. We also

Ming Dynasty is very popular just now; its elegant features and simplicity fits in well with modern furnishings and approach. It is also the most expensive and so usually the most popular! Local Chinese also like Qing Dynasty style furniture. Expats tend to go for a single distinctive style while local Chinese tend to like a more eclectic style. Given the booming market for antiques and interior design, how do you manage when antiques by definition have a finite supply? In other words, how do you meet demand? I am always buying antiques, but the quality has gone down as the supply has decreased. Our Chinese antiques section (Lily’s Antiques) is now only one of the four branches of our business, alongside Lily’s Living (modern and imported furniture and decoration), Lily’s Museum collection (high end antiques from China and Europe), and finally Lily’s Factory (custom made furniture). As time has gone by, we’ve expanded our range to help us cope with higher demand and to expand our customer base. We now also have a collaboration with a Spanish designer, for example. What percentage of your business is in the four different areas? Is any one of those growing particularly fast, and if so, why is that? Our largest areas are now Lily’s Living and Lily’s Factory. For Lily’s Museum, imports
are rising but exports are falling because of the European market. In making your own products, tell us about the design process – how do you translate a customer’s ideas, and see it through to finished product? Customers often come in with a picture, from a magazine for example, and we try to translate it into something that would be suitable for their home. We make sketch plans for the customer to approve and then they can come into the factory to check what’s being done. Sometimes these can be very big jobs, and we even go abroad to install features. For example, we made bookshelves for the library of a Russian film director, so we went to Moscow for three weeks in the middle of winter to oversee the project. Sometimes customers ask for difficult things, or things we think are impossible to begin with, but that’s the challenge. How do locals and expats compare when it comes to choosing things to buy? Locals sometimes work with interior designers to help them choose their décor because the whole idea of antiques or beautiful interiors is new to some people. Expats on the other hand tend to have more fixed ideas and have a clear vision of what they want, because they come from that kind of culture. How is the current Beijing antiques market, and where do you see it going in the next few years? The current market is not so good, with the economic problems in Europe and less people buying apartments in China. But we have good long-term relationships with our customers and they like to come here, often just to look around. We like to have a family around us and that is sure to be good in the long-term for us.

Designing A Social Networking Site for Chinese Business Text by Jessica Zhang, photo by Nature Zhang
What did you work as previously, and where did you study? I come from Hunan, China. After earning a B.A. in Chemistry at Tsinghua University, I went to Stanford to study for a Masters in Management Science & Engineering. After graduation, I worked in several companies, such as Ernst & Young, Tencent, Huawei and Yiheng Capital. What lessons did you from your work in the IT sector, or wish you had learned? The two year period (2007-2008) as a strategy director in Tencent was the turning point in my career. During this time, social network sites like Facebook took off and Tencent was dedicated to products that cater to user demands. The experience inspired me to create a career in social network sites. You frequently post on Weibo: in what way has SNS changed how you operate? How has it benefited you? SNS is a double-edged sword. Dirk Eschenbacher on marketing and digital creativity in Beijing Text by Mike Cormack, photo by Sui
Dirk Eschenbacher is a Munich native with over a decade in Beijing, working with the major advertising and digital firm Ogilvy, in their OgilveOne and Ogilvy Advertising branches. An art-school graduate, he works with digital branding and advertising, and is now renowned as one of the best in the Asia Pacific region. He also recently co-founded the travel website ZANADU, which curates luxury and boutique hotels around the world for Chinese travellers. Where did you grow up and study, and how did you end up in Beijing? I’m from Munich in Germany. I went to art school but decided that it was too artsy so I studied marketing instead. I really wanted to learn the art of branding from a business angle. I applied with several universities but one day I received a letter from the East Asian Management Institute near Frankfurt. I drove up there and signed up for their Marketing and Chinese course. I had no idea what to expect, but in hindsight it was one of those moments that change your life forever. I went to Shanghai in 1994 and “studied” at Tongji University for 6 months. By 1998 I was bored of Germany and moved to Thailand for 3 years. In late 2000, I got a call from a friend in Beijing who worked at Ogilvy Interactive (now called Ogilvy One) and I came here to freelance. I then got offered the job as Creative Director in Ogilvy Interactive, and after a long debate whether to trade my Thailand beach life for Beijing, my curiosity won and I moved here.

When Ryan graduated we were presented with the opportunity to create a neural interface for Arizona State University. That’s how the consultancy firm got started. So it was really serendipity that got us going – we had wanted to start one, but it took life knocking on our door for to realize we could make money doing this. It still wasn’t easy because Ryan had offers from Google and Amazon, and at that stage in life those are hard to walk away from.
So what made you want to start a company? My business partner, Ryan Braley, and I had been talking about starting a company for a number of years because we had a very similar hobby. My Perfect Day In Beijing
Paul Mathew, Flamme Restaurant and DRiNK magazine Text by Mike Cormack, photo courtesy of Paul Mathew
A perfect day conversely starts with bedtime stories. My 2 year-old daughter is an enthusiastic ‘reader’ and likes to wake to an assortment of books. She is particularly fond of pointing everything out to me - I’m not quite sure whether she’s asking what things are, or telling me (her tones are a bit off ), but I have to be attentive whatever the case. On a perfect day perhaps she remembers all those words we’ve been trying to teach her! After that comes the coffee ritual – the grinder is one of the most important of our kitchen appliances – and family breakfast with my wife and daughter - probably fresh warm croissants from Pekotan with a dab of butter. Once the coffee has taken effect (I’m a night owl and need a kick-start to get functioning in the morning), a perfect day would involve getting an article and a photo set finished and sent off, before some mid-morning exercise – a swim, bike or run in preparation for triathlon races later in the year. I find breaking the day up with sport makes me massively more productive and puts me in a good mood for the rest of the day, particularly when I’m running well; so a perfect day probably includes a personal best10km time around Chaoyang Park with the HeyRunning team. Lunch with my daughter precedes the second work session - which is again fantastically productive, thanks in part to the coffee from Jamaica Blue or Pacific Grounds. Work would comprise the bespoke drinks list for a recreation of one of the classic cocktail bars of 1920/30s Beijing, based in a hidden corner of a period building that everyone had forgotten about. would have a wonderful, but affordable selection of things made with rare old Armagnac, inhouse gins and small batch rye whiskies, served in antique glassware with garnishes prepared by the in-house pastry chefs and artists! I’d be back home in time to make my wife a cocktail when she gets back from work and to teach my daughter to swim in the bath before her bedtime. Once she was safely asleep, our ayi would be able to babysit, and my wife and I would head out for some xiaolongbao followed by a cocktail or two. At this point I’d be allowed behind the bar for a quick guest appearance; every drink would come out perfectly and be exactly what the customer wanted. I’d probably also find an amazing combination of bitters, vermouths and spirits that had never been tried before, and think of an incredibly witty and clever name for it… Finally there would be a taxi waiting for us as we left, no traffic, and the sky would be clear enough to see the stars, boding well for a gloriously sunny cycle with the Beijing Peloton in the mountains the following morning.
