AGENDA
Letter from the editor There’s never been a better time to be an entrepreneur, and Beijing is quickly becoming the best launch pad for startups ready to shake the world. As China’s economy matures, Beijing is attracting the best and brightest from China and throughout the world. In an increasingly knowledge-based economy, the opportunities for finding co-founders and early employees are continually improving, and the quality of ideas are strengthened by the diverse experience and perspectives available. Investors are increasingly focusing on China. Jim Breyer of Accel Partners turned a USD 12m investment in a startup called thefacebook.com into a USD 5 billion stake in one of the biggest Internet success stories ever. In a recent Forbes interview, Breyer said he is “super-bullish on China” and that over the next decade, “you will see at least half of the top 10 or 20 Internet companies come from China.” As a result, “Accel will invest more money in China this year than in the US.“ As a recruiter who specializes in finding talent for venture capital-backed Internet companies in China, I’ve worked with some incredibly passionate and talented entrepreneurs. I’ve also had the privilege of meeting exceptionally talented web developers, user interface designers and product managers. Whether working for established tech companies like Google or Microsoft or coming from startups in other parts of the world, savvy candidates recognize that the risk-reward ratio for joining the right startup in China has never been better. Also, as the organizer of Startup Weekend Beijing, I’ve met entrepreneurs who have come from as far away as Silicon Valley and Qatar to get firsthand experience of what it takes to successfully launch an idea in Beijing. There’s nothing more gratifying than seeing entrepreneurs accelerate their success and receive funding from investors such as Kai-Fu Lee’s Innovation Works, Blue Run Ventures and Dave McClure’s 500 Startups. In this issue, you can meet some of the entrepreneurs who are setting out to the change the world, and I’m sure you’ll be inspired by the audacity of their vision and the dedication, energy and enthusiasm they bring. And you can say you read about them in Agenda first. Maybe you’ll even be inspired to take the plunge yourself!

The Growth Guru
Verne Harnish’s reputation as the management guru precedes him. Long before the concept of building a “start-up” was considered cool, the Colorado-native was establishing entrepreneurial organizations and working with such luminaries as Michael Dell and Mark Cuban to build the management systems that helped establish them as some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs. He arrives in Beijing this month to speak at the upcoming Entrepreneurs Organization gathering (February 28-29) and took some time out to share his insights with Agenda.

According to your bio, you studied Mechanical Engineering – how did you make the transition to your current career as an expert on entrepreneurialism and management? I studied Mechanical Engineering at Wichita State University before pursuing an MBA. While getting my M.E. degree, I continued to advance up through a local firm called Superior Supply Co. – first as a design engineer, then sales engineer, then director of sales and marketing by the time I graduated. However, the President (a member of the Young Presidents Organization, a.k.a. YPO) was the son of the founder and I knew I had advanced as far as I could, so the chairman of the firm introduced me to one of his board members, who had founded the Center for Entrepreneurship at Wichita State University. I met him and he hired me to help build the Center

and launch the first Technical Entrepreneurship course in the College of Engineering. Within a year, I launched the Association of Collegiate Entrepreneurs (ACE) and the rest is history. Your book Mastering the Rockefeller Habits is widely regarded as a source of information and inspiration for companies of all stripes – how did you become aware of and go about formulating the “Rockefeller Habits?” The wife of a dear friend of mine, John Anderson, who launched the first YEO chapter in Detroit, gave me a copy of Titan, the biography of John D. Rockefeller. At the same time I was building and chairing EO’s executive program at MIT. What I was teaching seemed highly aligned with Rockefeller’s approach to business, so when it was time to codify in a book what I was teaching at MIT, I decided
to attach Rockefeller’s name to my approach to growing a firm. After all, he’s the wealthiest entrepreneur in history!
“I would say the same characteristics of a successful entrepreneur apply in China – focus, passion, persistence, and optimism”
What’s the difference between a “Fast Track Company” and a “Small Business?” Growth rate! The technical definition of a “gazelle” is any firm growing 20% per year for four years in a row – they are the growth engines of economies and represent the 3% of businesses that generate most of the net new jobs. In the book you mention a few firms like Dell and Federal Express as paradigms of managerial efficiency and effectiveness – are there any more current companies that you feel are on the fast track? Steven Berlin Johnson wrote one of my favorite books – Emergence. It’s those firms built on “emergence theory” that are the most explosive growth firms in history – Google, Amazon, Facebook, etc. – firms gen-
erating revenue and valuations in 10 years that took companies decades before. When you were launching the Association of Collegiate Entrepreneurs back in 1983, did you cross paths with and/or get to collaborate with anyone of note? Were there any diamonds in the rough that you knew who eventually became hugely successful? Besides the obvious – Steve Jobs and Michael Dell – Mark Cuban was probably the roughest diamond to become a huge success. At the time he was running a small IT services business in Dallas. He went on to launch Broadcast.com and sell it to Yahoo! for $5.7 billion. Ted Leonsis was in the first MIT/BOG class and went on to become Vice Chairman of AOL and a significant “new media” visionary. And what Greg

What do you think all successful entrepreneurs have in common? Focus, passion, persistence and optimism! And a thirst for knowledge – this is something I noticed throughout the 15 years I chaired the MIT/EO executive program. It was the entrepreneurs taking the most extensive notes and asking the most questions and engaging with the speakers that tended to go on and build the bigger companies. Greg Stemm just sent me an interesting email this week where he noted “relentless and unflinching pursuit of the goal is the only way to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles!” Read Steve Jobs latest biography to really understand the mindset of a successful entrepreneur. Running a company in China presents its own unique challenges – from the frenetic economy and government regulations to cultural issues and more – are there any general characteristics you’ve noticed about successful firms in China? I’ve not spent enough time in China or time with enough successful companies to really know – that’s why I’m excited about finding the right marketing partner and launching an annual Growth Summit that brings these firms together annually. However, observing Fred Crosetto’s success, I would say the same characteristics of a successful entrepreneur apply in China – focus, passion, persistence, and optimism. On the flipside, what are some of the most common reasons why companies fail? The opposites of focus, persistence, passion, and optimism! And the leadership team thinking they “know it all” already.
better handle on their business? Yes, about 200 books! Bill Gates took two weeks a year to plow through 200–250 books, manuscripts, PhD theses, whitepapers etc. to keep himself and Microsoft relevant. In the end, the quality of ideas that come out of the mind of an entrepreneur is equal to what they put in. So learn, learn, learn – and never stop learning. Who are the three entrepreneurs you admire the most and why? Rockefeller – for his focused discipline and strategy; and Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg for the same reasons. In a fastcompany interview you talk about the notion of “Core Ideologies” and their importance to companies as they grow – what are some of examples of companies that have effectively leveraged their core ideologies? Verifone and Towne Park founded by Jerry South, one of the early “students” in the MIT/EO program. People tend to hate meetings, but The Rockefeller Habits emphasizes their importance – why and how do you think regular meetings make a difference for companies? Considering the history of human existence, the written word has been around for only a fraction of time. So which natural abilities are more innate – talking and storytelling or staring at Excel spreadsheets? Human beings need to talk out our issues – i.e. the power of forum. The key is making sure the meetings are well structured and focused on important issues.

What’s your best trick? Do you find any parallels between magic and doing business? My favorite is David Copperfield’s “Back Stage” illusion – I performed it once at an EO conference in Chicago (my wife was my boxjumper). I love it because you invite the audience to come back stage with you to see the behind-the-scenes workings of a magic trick.
However, what the audience thinks is the trick isn’t at all. It’s the same with business. You can read the latest book on Apple (Adam Lashinsky’s excellent book called Inside Apple just came out) and copy exactly what they do, but in the end there’s a little bit of “magic” you can never see or learn that’s the secret to their success. All great companies have this secret ingredient.

Simplify Your “People” Systems
Eight ways to bring your company’s core values to life by Verne Harnish “Growth Guy”
In building Verifone from USD 30 million to USD 600 million to dominate the global market of clearing credit card transactions, Hatim Tyabji said his key leadership/management tool was a small booklet that explained in eight languages the eight core values at the heart of Verifone’s culture and success. “I essentially spent the last six years repeating myself,” noted Tyabji. What are your rules? Below are eight ways to bring these core values alive and a recommended process for “discovering”your true values if you’ve never committed them to writing. In essence, replace all the random “people” lists (hiring guidelines, performance appraisal criteria, recognition awards, etc.) with a coherent single list and simplify that part of your company. Danwei founder Jeremy Goldkorn on the past, present and future of one of the most influential China-oriented sites Interview by Jerry Chan, photos by Judy Zhou
South African Jeremy Goldkorn came to Beijing via London in 1995 and has been working in media for virtually his entire time here. As the Managing Editor of Beijing Scene, the creator of Le Magazine (the progenitor to the Chinese version of Time Out) and the Launch Editor for Agenda’s sister magazine the Beijinger (then known as “that’s Beijing”), he helped pioneer Beijing’s English-language media scene before starting Danwei.com, the renowned website covering Chinese society, culture and media, in 2003. Agenda recently caught up with Jeremy to learn how Danwei took shape and what it has in store for 2012 and beyond. What gave you the idea to do Danwei and how was it originally conceived? Did you draw any inspiration from other bloggers in setting it up? 2003 was a special year for the Chinese media and Internet. Daring stories were appearing in newspapers like the Southern Weekly, and the early Chinese bloggers were finding their voices online. The media and Internet seemed like new playgrounds, full of promise and excitement, but these developments were not being covered very well in English reporting. Many of the trends that we see today from the explosion of free expression on Weibo to consumer activism on the Internet were just getting going in 2003. I wanted to record these changes as they happened.
Martinsen and Eric Mu was probably the most important thing I did - aside from their regular contributions, they have both published a few standout pieces that drew a lot of traffic. Over the years, we’ve had a few breakthrough moments: translating influential bloggers Wang Xiaofeng and Han Han into English; video interviews with Flypig and Ping Ke of the podcast Antiwave and sex blogger Muzi Mei; short films about the big four Olympic construction projects (in 2006) and the Forum on China Africa Cooperation. We’ve always tried to write about things that other media organizations and bloggers weren’t covering, and we’ve been early experimenters in every new digital form, from YouTube videos to podcasts. Our early video work, which we did with the filmmakers Anna Sophie Loewenberg and Luke Mines, was right at the beginning of YouTube’s explosive growth, and we were unique in producing professional work tailored for the Internet. We’ve also published some superb writing by Geremie Barmé, David Moser, Alice X. Liu, Jeffrey Wasserstrom and others. At what point did you realize you were gaining a substantial readership? Within a year of launching in 2003, we had about a thousand unique visitors a day, and most of them were people who were interested in exactly what we had on our site, people who could not find such writing and documentary work elsewhere. Reaching a thousand daily readers seemed like the tipping point to me - from there on, word of

Our most popular videos have been watched several million times, and popular articles have hit rates in the high hundreds of thousands. You are now in your 18th year in Beijing. What’s keeping you going? Although China can be a difficult place to do things, Beijing is a city where a bootstrapping entrepreneur interested in media, information, writing and culture can make his own rules – at least some of the time. That’s why I’m still here. Where would you like to take Danwei from here? Where do you see it in five years? Our work will be the gold standard for media, financial, and market intelligence about China. “People attracted to startups generally care more about making a difference than about the perceived stability or prestige of working for a big, well-known company”
Red Pagoda Resources focuses on high caliber candidates for startups and fast-growing new companies. Is there a typical profile or is your net more widely cast? What skill-sets do you look for? Think of us as the one-stop shop for talent for VC-backed Internet and mobile Internet companies in China. Of course, the most important positions for these types of companies are ‘developers’: people that can actually build the company’s product, and product managers and other marketing roles, or those that figure out what should be built and how to make money from those products. People attracted to startups generally care more about making a difference than about the perceived stability or prestige of working for a big, well-known company. They also value long-term upside (i.e. stock or options in companies they work for) more than current income. I think they also tend to have a lot of confidence in their own judgment and ability to deal with uncertainty and adversity. If this sounds like you, shoot us your resume and let’s arrange a time to chat! What fields do your clients operate in? Are there areas in which you have particular expertise? Our clients are mostly Internet and mobile Internet startups that have received their first round of VC funding. However, because the scope of VC investment is broader in China than elsewhere, we also have clients in the hotel and retail bakery business - the baked goods business in China is growing at more than 30% per year! Our expertise really lies in clearly understanding the truly distinctive things that make our clients exceptional (what I refer to as “that electrifying detail”) and the crucial types of people they need to realize their potential. I think our expertise also lies in identifying and establishing rapport with exceptional candidates
so we can quickly understand what they really care about and showing them how to best reach their professional and personal goals. To do this, I draw on my experience as an investor and as an entrepreneur and consultant, as well as the talent, diligence and energy of my team. Tell us about Startup Weekend Beijing – how did it get started, what’s your vision for it? I participated in one of the first Startup Weekend events in Seattle a few years ago and was asked by the folks now running it if I could do one in Beijing. While I thought the concept was pretty promising, I also thought that it could be adapted to the local scene. We limit attendance to no more than 40 entrepreneurs per event and make it a bit more structured by bringing in well-known and successful VCs and angel investors like Xiaojun Li, a partner at IDG (the VC fund selected by Accel Partners as their China partner); Yinan Li, a partner at GSR Ventures and former Baidu CTO; Robin Chan, an angel investor in Twitter and FourSquare; and Fritz Demopolous, co-founder of Qunar.com to provide individual and detailed feedback to each team of participants. This is a unique and highly efficient way for entrepreneurs to get guidance from a number of investors who really know what they’re talking about. So far, we’ve held four Startup Weekend Beijing events and plan on doing one every quarter. I’ve been amazed at the diversity and quality of the entrepreneurs we’ve attracted. They’ve come from as far away as Qatar and Silicon Valley, as well as from Shanghai, Dalian and other parts of China. My hope is that we’ll continue to attract talented and passionate entrepreneurs from around the world who see the incredible startup opportunities in China today. The next Startup Weekend Beijing will be April 13-15 at the Holiday Inn Express in Dongzhimen. I hope you’ll think about submitting an application.

Ines Brunn on setting up her fixed-gear bike shop in Beijing Interview by Mike Cormack, photos by Sui
Ines Brunn is a German physicist and currently Beijing’s sole fixed-gear bike store proprietor, at Natooke in Wudaoying Hutong, Dongzhimen. As well as running Natooke, she started the Beijing Fixed Gear Bike group and does fixed-gear bike trick performances throughout China. Agenda met her to find out more about how she has conceptualized her bike business for the Beijing market. How did you come to sell bicycles to Beijingers? It might seem like selling ice to Eskimos. My idea was not to sell bikes to Beijingers but to sell bikes that were very hard to get in China. In 2007, an American friend and I started the Beijing Fixed Gear Bike group, the first of its kind in China. In 2008, a friend said, “Why don’t you open a bike shop” and I said, “What? A bike shop?” Of course, my passion is for bikes and I love motivating people to get cycling. But I was then working in an international high tech telecommunications company, so it didn’t sound like the most obvious idea! But on second thought, it all made sense: being able to start my own company, following my passion, doing things that I love and being able to grow the community. What obstacles does one encounter in trying to set up a store in Beijing? You first need to find and rent a place, then prepare all kinds of documents and hand them in. I waited for almost two months after handing in all the documents only to learn that the name of my company could not be used, even though we had checked it beforehand! So we had to change the documents and hand them in again, meaning that I needed to pay the rent for an extra two months without being able to operate. It’s best to use a company that can help do all the walking to the different bureaus. Without them it would have taken even longer to register. If the company is good they know

all the current regulations as these can change very suddenly. Now it is harder to invest foreign currency, and many more documents are required than three years ago. As a small-business owner, what networking and marketing tools do you use? Do you need different tools for Chinese and for foreigners? We focus on the community. We organize bike events, rides through Beijing, get together doing fixed gear tricks, small races, and also bike polo. The community of fixed gear riders in Beijing has grown substantially and it makes me happy to see how young people say that the bike changed their lives. We use different tools to spread the word about our events. For foreigners we focus on our newsletter and our website natooke.com. For the Chinese we mainly use Sina weibo. For the shop sales side, we just started a Chinese online store on Taobao: natooke.taobao.com. I love doing tricks on fixed gear bikes and my performances attract a lot of attention. What are the best and worst things about operating in Beijing? I think a great thing is the interesting characters coming to our shop every day. Beijing used to be the bike capital and there are many people that love bikes and spend a lot of time working on their old Flying Pigeon 28 inch bike: they come and show it off to us. Some were fortunate to have an old Raleigh or other old model of a foreign brand. But having a bike
shop in a time where people “The community of fixed gear riders in Beiconsider bikes to be for poor jing has grown substantially and it makes me people and symbols of the past happy to see how young people say that the time and the car is the status bike changed their lives” symbol doesn’t make it easy. In Germany, people have changed and many now cycle to work to reduce emissions, improve their own health and save time. So it might be easier to sell bikes in a country that likes them! Finally, most foreigners come to China hoping for rapid growth. What’s your own vision for Natooke? Personally I did not open Natooke for rapid growth. I see more value in inspiring people to ride a bike. This is a slow process but gives me a very satisfactory feeling of contributing in a small way to making the world a better place now and for our future generation. So my mission is to inspire more people to ride bikes and enjoy cycling. Cycling is my passion and I love it. I want to build the Natooke community not just in Beijing but in other places of China. Then we can have more community races and bike polo events across the country. My vision is that Chinese people get back on the bike and enjoy it and that the sky in Beijing gets bluer every day.

Glen A Japanese whiskey bar in Nansanlitun Lu, Glen aims for the upper end of the market, and is more like a cigar lounge than a bar: you won’t find many people wearing jeans or under thirty. Dress to impress in your gladrags and enjoy the serious selection Glen has to offer. Naturally, there’s a substantial portion
of Japanese malts, now reputed amongst the finest in the world, such as Yamazaki, Hakushu, Yoichi and Karuizawa. The resident mixologists and hand-crafted ice are also impressive. 203, Taiyue Suites, 16 Nansanlitun Lu, Chaoyang District. (6591 1191) 朝阳区南三里 屯16号泰悦豪庭2层203
Ichikura Ichikura is a little trouble to find, but then, the best things in life always make you work for them. Found upstairs from Chaoyang Theater’s south side, Ichikura is (you won’t be surprised to learn) another Japanese whiskey bar, and a fine example at that. The choice is of course exceptional, with the mirror-backed bar jam-packed with bottles from around the world. (Yes, you can get US whiskies like Wild Turkey or Four Roses, if you really want). Ichikura also does a fine line in cocktails and bar food like tapas, pizzas and spicy wings: being good does not mean being snooty. 2/F (south side of Chaoyang Theater), 36 Dongsanhuan Beilu, Chaoyang District. Throughout Beijing Jenny Lou’s Where would we be without Jenny Lou’s? Where else can one buy balsamic vinegar, mascarpone, lasagna sheets and cayenne pepper in one convenient location? Though Jenny’s really specializes in wine when it comes to the bottle, they do a decent line in whiskey. The Guomao branch, for example, boasts Glenfiddich (12, 15 and 18 Year Old) and Balvenie (both oak and sherry casked) as its usual malts, locked away in a display cabinet, though you can get your hands on blends like J+B, Johnny Walker and Grants more easily, should you want to. BHG With numerous outlets around Beijing, BHG has a rather premium ambiance and consequently offers higher-end spirits – which, of course, naturally includes whiskey. Although the selection isn’t as good as some shops, it is perhaps the best of all the supermarkets. You can always stock up on cheese, cooked meats, wheat beer, pasta and cereal while there, but be prepared to drop a kuai or two.
Paradise CVS This Sanlitun joint (also known as Heaven) is an excellently-stocked alcohol provider, with fine arrays of spirits and beers. Because you can sit and drink your tipple in-store, it sometimes seems a bit of a sawdust joint; it gets very smoky in the evenings, and the toilet is in a cupboard in a corner. Despite this, the quality of the selection draws faithful customers. Here you can get a beautifully curvaceous bottle of Glenmorangie or a sweetly vanilla-scented Macallan 12 Year Old, a Glenlivet or a Highland Park. (You can also get bottles laboring under names like “Bonnie Prince Charlie”, but why would you want to?). If you like making cocktails, you can also stock up on things you can’t find anywhere else, like peach schnapps and angostura bitters. the List Wired speakers will someday become extinct – and good riddance! But choosing between wi-fi, Bluetooth or a gadget that enables your old speakers to go wireless can be confusing. If you like listening to music through your phone then Bluetooth might be the way to go. Wi-fi, on the other hand, allows the sound to go through walls, ceilings and floors but is likely to have interference if you have any 900MHz gadgets, like old phones. Using the USB drive, you can stream music from 30-50m and get surprisingly good sound: for greater clarity, you can pair up more speakers with only one dongle. spotlight Born in Guangzhou, Anna Tsui moved to Boston at the age of three and went on to graduate from the University of Massachusetts. After working a few years in the US, she moved to Beijing and cofounded the startup business Wokaishi, a social health and fitness website that went online in September 2011. She tells Agenda about breaking out of the 9-5, making something of her passion for fitness, and what’s she’s learned about doing a startup.
FIT FOR BUSINESS
Wokaishi co-founder Anna Tsui on starting a business to get Beijing fitter Interview by Calvin Smith, photo by Judy Zhou
Why did you decide to do a startup? Looking back, having come from that cultural base and combining it with the independent, self-starter culture of the United States, I think entrepreneurial blood in my veins was a foregone conclusion. I was miserable working typical 9-5 jobs. When you’re young you have lots of energy and want to make something of yourself. You don’t have all the assets you pick up later in life like a home and family, so you are more willing to dedicate yourself to the job. I felt the 9-5 system takes advantage of that dedication without rewarding it properly, so I quickly felt trapped. That’s when I decided to “break the mould,” and do something on my own.
me find and realize that idea. We met through a classified in the Beijinger – I was completely new, didn’t speak Mandarin well, or understand the system. In a moment of crisis, when I was trying to figure out how to pay my gas bill, I saw his post saying he was willing to help new foreigners get situated for free. Now back in the States I would probably think twice about responding to such an ad, but I was desperate and thankfully he turned out to be a very cool, normal guy. As we became friends, I began to notice he wasn’t really happy with his 9-5 job. I asked him if he wanted to do something more meaningful, and he and I started talking. Health and fitness has always been an inDid you know what kind of startup you terest for me, but it hasn’t been tapped into wanted to do when you came to China? No, I just knew I wanted to start something. “Finding what works is part of what startups I owe a great deal to my co- are all about - we gained a small fortune in founder [Josh Du] for helping market research and understanding from it”

very well here in China. China’s citizens are becoming wealthier which means obesity is starting to become more prevalent, but it also means they have more disposable income to fight it. Fitness gyms were starting to pop up more frequently, but understanding of health and fitness is still very poor – in fact, some of these local trainers are so poorly educated on the matter that it’s actually dangerous to follow their instructions. With that knowledge in hand, we founded Wokaishi. So what exactly is Wokaishi? Wokaishi is a fitness and health website that went live at the end of September 2011. It is being further developed into an online virtual game. We built the site around what we thought people would want – a social media aspect to promote sharing and learning, a workout program to see actually how to do the exercises you want to do, a calendar to plan out your routines, quality news articles from around the world to help educate our users, and events. It turned out we were a little off base, but finding what works is part of what startups are all about, and we gained a small fortune in market research and understanding from it. We discovered the social media side was a flop because everyone already uses Sina Weibo, Kaixin, or Renren, so we’re integrating Sina Weibo into the platform. Events on the other hand were quite successful, because the local market loves, almost needs, to do things in groups, so we’re going to maximize that. Finally, the news articles weren’t being read as heavily as we wanted, so we’re looking at the cultural love of games and working in the education through that avenue. No matter how good the information may be or how strong your desire to help people is, they aren’t going to work with you if they aren’t interested and entertained. You’ve got to target your market and that’s what our new updates, due in March, will do. Do you have any advice for those thinking of founding a startup? One, you need to do some soul searching before you dive in to a startup. Although it is very cool to go off on your own
and pursue your dreams, doing a startup can be isolating and stressful. This lifestyle is a bit glorified in the media and in our social networks. You may have no money in the bank, haven’t slept in three days, and have holes in your jeans, but it’s cool because you’re doing something for yourself. However, when you’re actually the one going through these things, especially the longer you’re in it, it’s a different story. Two, in China you need a local on your team. It really helps to have one as a founder. Navigating the government channels to get founded is very difficult, and even more so when you’re a foreigner. And, that’s just the beginning of your adventures with red tape. Having a local and knowing the right people is a must. Three, free advice saves money. For example, when we were trying to get the company founded, I went to several law firms. I started with one and got some base knowledge about what we needed to do. Then I went to the firm armed with that knowledge and got a little more. Then I moved on to the next. I never paid for legal fees because they typically won’t charge you for your first visit. Granted, it wasn’t all the knowledge I needed, but it was enough that we could get things going on our own. Four, venture capitalists and angel investors are both good and bad. At the end of the day, they are after money. It’s important to know this. Before you take that check, realize what it means and how it might change your company. It may keep the lights on, but it also may turn your company into something you don’t like. The Philanthropy of George Soros by Chuck Sudetic One of the world’s leading philanthropists, George Soros has provided more than USD 8 billion to his worldwide network of foundations. This book, written by former New York Times journalist Chuck Sudetic, marks the first exploration of George Soros’s innovative philanthropic strategies and unmatched commitment to building open societies where dictatorship and violent repression have been the rule for too long. Soros is widely lauded for his financial and economic insights and investment strategies. But his philosophy-driven philanthropy and its impact are unprecedented for a private individual, and have produced remarkable results. The Philanthropy of George Soros reveals the thought and practice behind a lesser-known dimension of this remarkable man’s life, his goals for society, and his underlying vision for the future.

MY PERFECT DAY IN BEIJING
Holly Chang, Founder and CEO of Golden Bridges and head of the Project Pengyou Initiative Text by Holly Chang, photo by Judy Zhou
Beijing is a city of contradictions. It can be old and new, hectic and calm, gritty and polished. My perfect day in Beijing would be a sampling of the city’s diverse quirks and comforts. To start the day, I would take a leisurely stroll from home towards Gulou Dong Dajie, stopping for dumplings at Huntun Hou and a cup of coffee at Alba Café. The weather would be warm, and the sky would be blue and adorned with happy clouds as I passed a now quiet Nanluoguxiang. The old folks in the neighborhood would be out and about wearing their pajamas while walking their dogs or swinging their arms like a lazy form of Tai Qi. I would arrive at our traditional courtyard office in Xiaojingchang Hutong, and witness a lively Project Pengyou-organized forum, where a few of our favorite Beijingers and China commentators would be engaged with a young affluent American and Chinese audience on a complex US-China issue. We would all break around noon, right as the Gung Ho Pizza delivery bike arrived with our orders of fresh salads and piping-hot gourmet pizzas. After lunch, I would prepare a cucumber and mint-infused Pimm’s cocktail from a bottle purchased at Heaven Liquor Shop & Bar, and head over to the West Gate of The Summer Palace. There, I’d have a sunny picnic with colleagues and friends and play some family-style party games with a view of the glistening lake, ancient stone bridges and majestic pavilions in the background.
40
AGENDA
And since this perfect day would have no budget constraints, I’d stop by Aman at Summer Palace Spa Resort for a decadent twohour massage, while sipping on fresh carrot and ginger juice. After a nap and a shower in their guesthouse, I’d hop in a taxi to meet up with my best girl friends for a sizzling dinner at Karaiya Spice House in Sanlitun Village. Once our faces were numb from all hot food and laughs, we would get our groove on at the lively rooftop bar of Kokomo’s. There, I’d socialize and dance until my favorite DJ’s set had finished. Then I would head back to Gulou to watch an acoustic band play at the gritty but intimate Jiangjinjiu. After a laid-back jam session, and fun conversations well into the night, my friends and I would head to Amilal for a night cap where I’d reminisce about the four years of my life spent living in Shuangjing. Nostalgic and tired, I’d take a taxi back to Shuangjing and check into a suite in the Renaissance Hotel where more than a few of my friends and family have stayed over the years. There, I’d scrub up in their marble shower, get under the soft white linens, lay my head down, and fall into a deep sleep.
