INDUSTRY UPDATE Welcome to AGHA’s new initiative to connect buyers and suppliers in the gift and homewares sector. Following one of our most successful Sydney Gift Fairs in many years, who would have envisaged that within weeks the world would be turned upside down. Despite planning and sales for the 2020 Melbourne Gift Fair being well underway, in early April AGHA made the bold but correct move to cancel the Melbourne Gift Fair, recognising the restrictions would mean there was no way the exhibition would proceed. This early decision meant that exhibitors and visitors did not commit to financial outlays in order to attend, but it did mean AGHA had to refund all payments made by exhibitors. By cancelling one of the largest annual industry events has meant that the crucial buying opportunity for thousands of retailers would be compromised. AGHA had the option of running the exhibition later in the year, but after much industry consultation it was concluded that it would be too late for the lucrative Christmas buying cycle and there was still uncertainty regarding large scale events being allowed to open. The risk was too high. As the peak industry body, it was incumbent on AGHA to ensure that businesses remained connected during this time and therefore

immediately launched two new online initiatives to ensure retailers, stylists, designers and the industry in general remain connected with leading suppliers from across the country. The new e-Gift Fair Online Industry Catalogue highlights a huge range of new and exciting products and brands from leading industry suppliers, filling the gap that would have been occupied by the traditional printed catalogue. The online catalogue will be updated monthly and has many exciting features that enable quick and easy access to suppliers including embedded videos, photos and contact details. In addition, the AGHA Online Supplier Showcase is a new searchable showcase of thousands of products from hundreds of leading suppliers from Australia and overseas. The Showcase will become the definitive go-to resource for retailers, stylists and designers to source new season products in addition to the well-known brands and traditional best sellers. Download supplier catalogues, access videos and make direct contact with suppliers using the chat facility. Users can create free accounts to keep track of their favourite products and suppliers across all desktop and mobile devices. Both online resources will be expanded over time and I am sure you will find these invaluable in ensuring that your business in up to-date with the best of the industry suppliers. I must congratulate the entire AGHA team who have done an amazing job by launching these two initiatives, from scratch to completion in under six weeks. AMCL Chief Executive, Ben Lazzaro said Australian Made is throwing its support behind Australian manufacturers and growers, as they continue to lead the way in Australia’s recovery from COVID-19.

Australia’s overreliance on imported products has been highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s time to address this imbalance,” said Mr Lazzaro. “Let’s take a long-term view and increase our level of manufacturing self-sufficiency. video collection shines a light on the people, processes and stories behind some of our most loved Australian products. “The Australian Makers series highlights the ingenuity and skills of our Aussie manufacturers, providing a unique insight into what goes into making a product in Australia, as well as the benefits it delivers to the wider community,” said Mr Lazzaro. “These are real businesses, people and products that makeup Australia’s diverse and evolving manufacturing sector.”

for your home renovation With many of our renovation plans on hold, this time at home may just be the perfect time to plan for when things are looking a little more certain, and what better way to start than with a look at what’s trending for the next six to twelve months? 1 It’s also a great time to update our spaces with paint, furniture and homewares as our attitudes towards home shift. If they didn’t become our favourite sanctuaries during lockdown, then we certainly wish they could be more sanctuary-like! And of course, in the cooler months, we’re all craving warmth, cosiness and comfort with lots of extra layers and textures.

I’ll start with the trends that are hanging on from the last The Family Love Tree year or so and show no signs of their popularity waning. That old favourite rattan, so huge in the seventies, has actually been used to make furniture since Egyptian times, so it’s perhaps no surprise it’s still with us! I think we all love its warmth and texture and the fact it’s made from a natural material. It also works well in so many styles of interiors and you can have just a little (like a plant stand or lampshade) or a lot (like a beautiful statement credenza or bedhead).

Other trends standing the test of time are gold tapware and patterned feature floor tiles in bathrooms, and people being braver with their kitchen cabinetry choices.

The disappearance of 50 shades of grey has continued too, and while greys for house exteriors are still very popular, inside, we are certainly seeing more warm neutrals. The colour contrasts are much subtler too.

We’ve seen a much more tonal palette coming through this year. The bold colour contrasts of previous years have made way for subtle layering of natural hues. Depth is added through texture and materiality. Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux colour and communications manager

While wallpaper is still popular, I’m seeing an even bigger trend for wall panelling of all kinds, from wainscoting with a chair rail to full walls of VJ panelling. It can make such an impact, turning the most featureless homes into something really exciting and characterful. Brands like Intrim and Easycraft have products you can install yourself with a little know-how and the right tools. Whether your home’s more Hamptons or Scandi, there’s a wall panelling solution for you!

And last but not least, houseplants have never been more popular, with lockdown seeing many people get really into honing their green-fingered skills! It’s not just about the plants themselves though, with sales of beautiful pots, planters and hangers through the roof. The right combo can really make a room.

Taking our business online

In this article, we hear from AGHA Member and owner of J Style, Jen Idosaka, as she shares her experience of how online sales opportunities have supported J Style to continue business during a global pandemic. In the early stages of the pandemic in March we thought business was over. We had zero orders for two weeks and the exchange rate was dropping in a way that gave us GFC flashbacks. The students we normally employ had gone home to Japan for the university holidays, and they didn’t come back. A container of stock arrived and we had no-one to help unpack it and no-one to sell it to. All of our stockists were suddenly closed and understandably a little nervous about ordering. J Style is a small family run business. We’ve been importing ceramics and giftware from Japan for over 20 years. We live and work in the semi-industrial end of Wollongong. We can see the flames from the steel works at night, but we’re also just two blocks from the beach and golf course. Down our end of town it’s not unusual to live above a warehouse and have a forklift in your backyard. Neighbours call in to borrow our pallet jack, not a cup of sugar. We can work through any lockdown without leaving the building and we’ve invested in a strong wholesale website and online advertising that has already shown good results. Being small and flexible and with the setup we have, we are in a good position to ride out a pandemic.

But if our stockists don’t get through it, neither do we. A few wholesalers in our industry seem to be trying their hand at online retailing. That’s not what we want to do. We’re good at importing, dealing with suppliers in Japan and supporting our stockists in Australia and New Zealand. Our stockists excel at retailing and dealing directly with customers.

When we get enquiries from the public, I send them to a local J Style stockist who can build a real relationship with them. Besides cancelling our buying trips to Japan this year, the hardest thing about the lockdowns is not meeting face to face with our stockists in their stores or at trade fairs. It’s been really difficult to plan our orders for the next 12 months without the usual feedback.

But it’s not too dire. I’m always up for a chat on the phone, and we have Instagram. I’ve loved seeing how many stockists are really getting into their social media and allowing me to see their stores and displays almost as if I was visiting. It’s great to see how J Style product can be worked in with product from other suppliers to come up with a look that perfectly suits their store and their own customer base. That mix is important and another reason why we don’t sell direct ourselves. Through April I spent a lot of time working with other people’s web developers. The biggest hurdle to setting up a website is getting all the content together. If I can help my stockists set up online quickly by providing photographs and descriptions, J Style product will be featured well in their online stores.

With no Gift Fair in August, online is all we’ve got to promote our products for the foreseeable future. AGHA has been great with setting up the Online Supplier Showcase and publishing the Industry Catalogue online very quickly. It’s given all of us who would usually exhibit at their trade fairs, somewhere we can promote our products collectively online. It’s also great for retailers so they don’t have to rely on random internet searches, but can go to one spot on the web and find all the wholesalers they would have been visiting in Melbourne. All this extra online promotion means we need more product photography than ever. At the same time, I can’t easily travel to Sydney to do a photo shoot. Instead I’ve finally got around to decluttering my office. I’ve reduced so much

paper I got rid of two filing cabinets and set up a photo studio in the corner instead. I’m still on a steep learning curve, but I’m quite enjoying upskilling into my new role as product photographer. It’s been a fun part of our business changes and I’ve been swapping tips on lighting and lenses and flat lay backgrounds with my stockists who are all doing a lot more photography in house too. I ordered a whole variety of leaf teas online from a few of our stockists that are tea shops. I thought I’d use the downtime to film myself making tea in J Style teapots and point customers in their direction. As it turns out, people turned to tea without any help from me. Orders started flooding in for teapots and tea sets and I had to abandon plans to make videos and concentrate on filling orders. At least I have a lot of delicious tea now to keep me going. Pivoting through COVID-19 Australian Businesses Beating the Pandemic

For some, the initial shock and impact of COVID-19 on business in Australia was a devastating reality. For others, the pandemic was used as a chance to thrive and pivot in an environment they never thought they would overcome. CEO & Co-Founder of Enjoy Living, Lisa Carrick did just this and has shared her story on how, as a wholesaler, they pulled through one of the toughest years they have ever experienced. It certainly was not the year we planned to mark our 10 years of business. We had BIG product plans, had just come off the most successful Trade Fair in Sydney and were finding our stride when life as we knew it just literally stopped in its tracks mid March. After the initial shock of it all, which lasted about a week, I reached out to a few trusted wholesalers and retailers in my network. We took some comfort in the knowledge that everyone was sailing through the same storm, but soon realised that not everyone was in the same boat. If we were to weather it, we needed to shift our focus pretty quickly to the end game â&#x20AC;&#x201C; what life would be like after Covid. We needed to regroup to ensure all our community (staff, agents, distributors, contractors and retailers) could get through this together. Given my corporate background with Coles-Myer, I pivoted like most had to do, and decided to focus on strengthening our infrastructure. If we could not grow sales as forecasted, then we had to reduce costs, which

meant everyone working on the business, rather than in it. Every action we took had the sole purpose of adding value directly or indirectly to our community of retailers who had supported us. We focussed on how our business should look once we came through the other side. With some incredibly loyal staff and fortuitous meetings of the minds, we formed new long term and mutually beneficial strategic alliances, worked on rebuilding the brand and website from the ground up, put in place systems and processes that removed duplication, and streamlined the business as much as we could.

Every action we took had the sole purpose of adding value directly or indirectly to our community of retailers who had supported us. On the flip side, we took the “saved spend” on trade fairs and travel and invested most of these funds back into marketing and advertising. We continued with our pre-Covid plans of engaging a Brand Manager and Social Media Specialist (both of whom have become so integral to our business that in hindsight I wish I’d done this years ago), we reduced our free freight threshold from $500 to $200 and widened the free freight delivery area from capital cities to Australia-wide. We removed all credit card surcharges, continued to offer trading terms, and built a web page dedicated to showcasing our retailer’s logos with links back to their websites (if they had one) to encourage consumers to buy local. Since May, we have never performed better. Focusing on everyone else to ensure they would realise their goals meant we would realise ours by default. We built a culture of celebration where every month we find a reason to celebrate the achievements of so many in our village who have truly banded together. There’s no doubt that the homewares

industry is a beneficiary of the reallocation of consumers discretionary spend. As families were being forced to spend more time in their homes, and with lighting being such an integral and cost effective way to change the ambience and mood, we were in the right place at the right time to be of service. With two new containers arriving next month with close to 200 back orders (think our new Weather and UV resistant candle, perfect for outdoor entertaining at Christmas, our new wax covered Maxi Tea Light that in a world first takes 2AAA batteries, our stunning Christmas Trees and our functional and elegant Tapers), we are quietly optimistic about the second half of the year, and grateful for the way in which Australians have fallen in love with our products. - Lisa Carrick, CEO & Co-Founder, Enjoy Living
