Dear Friends of ASA,
“And then I’d like to thank [drum roll please]…(and his name is) Fr. Ed(!) for specifically teaching us mathematics. Now, thanks to him, I’ll be a year ahead in math next year. The experiences in his class have been tremendous. I have finally become Class President, though I have almost been impeached several times. But somehow I survived. I have been class president for three months of the year and I have been vice president for one term. He might not have taught us how to survive in the wild, but he has taught us how to survive elementary school. I always felt understood by Fr. Ed and he “got” my sense of humor. Learning was fun, especially the trivia games. Now that I have been in this school for so long, I’d like to advise the fourth graders that younger children will look up to you. Be patient with them.”
It is with a great sense of accomplishment that ASA just finished twelve years of Orthodox education in Portland, Oregon. With 52 students enrolled and a well-established, highly qualified teaching staff we are already looking forward to the beginning of the next school year! ASA is truly a community where children are educated with integrity, where holistic is more than a buzzword, and children achieve academic excellence surrounded by the beauty and teaching of the Church. Agia Sophia has grown and matured as a school: through two rounds of accreditation, new curriculum including a formal PE program, impressive grants that led to Smartboards and other needed materials, our school has thrived. However, the heart of the school lies with our beloved teachers, staff, students, parents, and community. You all are what make ASA such a special place and blessing to those who experience it. The 2015-16 school year was full of celebration for ASA, as we completed our second round of accreditation through AdvancED. As you see will in this report, the accreditation team found that ASA is meeting international accreditation standards at the highest level. We continue to grow however, with consistent increases in enrollment, excellent professional development opportunities, updated curriculum, a brandnew technology plan, improved assessments, and more. I hope you will enjoy the stories contained in this Annual Report and share with us in the success of ASA. Thank you all so much for your love and support over the years! ~Makarios Daniels “I may not have been here as long as some of my friends, but 6 years is still a long time. I would like to start my speech off by thanking God, because without him we wouldn’t be standing here today! There are also several other figures I would like to thank, such as my parents who pay for me to go to this school. I’d also like to thank my Grandparents for helping my parents pay...I’m definitely sad that I will be leaving ASA and I wish this time had not have been so short. This school is awesome, and I wish I could stay here but at the same time I would like to meet the world and experience something different. Sometimes I wonder how our class is going to survive without these 5th graders. But next year, there will be a whole new batch of 5th graders.“ ~Levi Knight

5TH GRADE GRADUATES Agia Sophia Academy is proud to annouce our 2016 5th grade graduates! While the student graduation speeches were presented at our Spring Fine Arts night, we like to share excerpts & highlights from the orginal presentations. “I’ve been at this school for about 8 years, and I’ve been wanting to go here since I could walk. My mom works at ASA, so I was always hanging around the school. When she wasn’t looking I would run off to one of the classrooms for story time. My Mom would have to go through all the classrooms, and when she finally found me I would cry because I didn’t want to leave. I am a little sad to be leaving ASA because all my friends are here, and I know and love all the teachers here at ASA. But I think it will be good for me. Of course I will be coming back to visit every now and then, but I will still miss this place. I pretty much live here, and now I’m leaving. I’ve always wanted to go to a different school to see what it would be like, because I’ve never been to a different school before, but now that I have to leave, I’m not sure I want to. This has been a great experience for me.”
Fifty-one children were enrolled this year with 9 local parishes represented throughout our student body, as well as 6 children who were non-Orthodox.
In April, all our elementary students took the SAT 10 standardized test and our scores continue to soar above the national average.
~Maria McKenzie “As a military family we moved around a lot in the past. I have only been at ASA for 2 years, but I can say this is by far the best school I have been to. Here, I enjoyed a smaller classroom, because in a bigger class my teachers weren’t able to help as much, if I needed some extra attention. For example, when I first came to the school I needed some help getting caught up in math, but Fr. Ed spent extra time with me and I was with the rest of the class right away. Something that makes ASA extra special is the fact that it’s an Orthodox school.”

SERVICE LEARNING PROJECTS ASA students are influenced everyday by the active community life of the St. John’s community. They witness Christian activities of service, prayer, and almsgiving. They also learn that serving others is important. This year, our students produced creative thank you cards to our neighborhood fire department which were mounted and framed. The families took these over to the fire station with donuts and hot chocolate to share with our brave neighbors. They also offered a beautiful Christmas caroling program to our friends at Brookdale Memory Care in Beaverton, wrote correspondence with children in Haiti, and shared a special lunch with the St. John’s senior group that was followed by singing and sharing.
SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT Throughout the year, our students benefit from liturgical feast day celebrations and clergy visits to the classrooms. We were blessed with visits from Fr. Theodore Dorrance, Fr. Paul Paris, Fr. Nicholas Letten, Fr. John Mancantelli, Fr. Alban West and Fr. Gabriel Agoston. Fr. Theodore, the spiritual director of ASA, gave some enlightening talks to the staff throughout the year, as a way of helping us grow as Orthodox educators.
CAREER DAY Career Day was a great way for students to learn about professions, livelihoods and callings. Our guest speakers included parents and community members. The students learned so much and asked great questions!
SCIENCE FAIR
NEXT GEN FOSS KITS FOR 21ST CENTURY LEARNERS ASA students are preparing themselves for the real-world by engaging in hands-on science experiments, data collecting and delving into the investigative process. Our students are meeting the national science standards enhanced by curriculum offered through the Next Generation Full Option Science System kits. Through the fundraising efforts of the PTP and grants offered through Holy Trinity Endowment and the Fr. Elias Stephanopoulos Scholarship Funds, we have added or updated 8 new kits to our science curriculum.
OUR PARENT TEACHER PARTNERSHIP SUPPORT Our Parent Teacher Partnership enjoyed a great year together of fund and friend-raising. Over $8,000 was raised by our families. In addition to funding various events and Teacher Appreciation Week, we were able to support Tuition Assistance ($4,000) and Technology ($1,500). Our Christmas Bake Sale raised $800 for our music program. Next year we are streamlining our parent fundraising program by only selling Scrip rather than having the additional fall and spring fundraisers. Our goal is to raise atleast $6,800 (34 families at $200 each) this way. We look forward to another great year ahead!
Elementary students worked diligently on their experiments which included a six-week scientific process. Their projects culminated with an evening Science Fair and student presentations following our Feast Day celebration.

ACCREDITATION ASA completed its accreditation renewal with AdvancED in early March. The school has been accredited, originally under Northwest Accreditation Commission, since 2007. Accreditation renewal is a year-long process, replete with in-depth self-study, stakeholder surveys, data analysis, and evidence collection that culminates in a full-day site visit from a team of highly qualified educators sent by AdvancED.
GREEK OPEN Our annual 2015 Greek Open Golf Tournament and dinner to support Agia Sophia Academy organized by the School Board and parent volunteers raised approximately $7,500 for the 2015-2016 school year.
The scores for the various standards (coming from the surveys, our internal self-assessment, classroom observations, student test scores, evidence files, and more,) are combined into what is called the Index of Educational Quality (IEQ). The highlights of ASA’s final report are these: • The Accreditation Team from AdvancED were greatly impressed by ASA. Where most schools have a few Powerful Practices highlighting strong performance on the standards, ASA received 13. • Additionally, all schools generally receive 2-3 required actions and 2-3 recommended actions, ASA was only given 1 of each, which the Lead Evaluator mentioned is fairly unprecedented. • The average of the three IEQs for all accredited schools in the state of Oregon last year was 262. In the words of the State Director, ASA “blew that out of the water,” with our average IEQ of 342! The highest score for ASA’s three IEQ components was Teaching and Learning Impact. • One of our AdvancED team members was so touched by the mission and vision of ASA, she volunteered to join our board of directors and support ASA’s future. The overall take-away is that ASA remains fully accredited and is performing well above average in all the standards for accreditation! Congratulations to everyone involved, especially to our wonderful staff that focuses on continuous improvement as professionals, in and out of the classroom each and every year!

I would like to start my speech off by thanking God, because without him we wouldn’t be standing here today! There are also several other figures I would like to thank, such as my parents who pay for me to go to this school. I’d also like to thank my Grandparents for helping my parents pay...I’m definitely sad that I will be leaving ASA and I wish this time had not have been so short. This school is awesome, and I wish I could stay here but at the same time I would like to meet the world and experience something different.
