FOUNDERS/OWNERS Priscilla & Bruce Kincaid CO-FOUNDER Janet Dixon MANAGING EDITOR Priscilla Kincaid, RN, BSN, MBA

Welcome to the start of a New Year! For many, a new year brings them thoughts of a "new you" or maybe a fresh start full of opportunity. This year I think it is safe to say that we are all hoping for that fresh start in 2022 as we look ahead to bringing back what we at one time knew as our "normal" or even just being in the present, accepting our current and future state of normalcy. As we have embarked on our journey through the holidays, we find that families or individuals identify a need for support. This holiday season, I have had the privilege of meeting with several families who had not been able to see their loved ones due to circumstances and, for the first time, have now been able to reconnect in person and see what areas of help were needed. These needs ranged from assistance with finding in-home care, who to call for real estate needs, and finding a new place to call home with some extra support options. Most of the families did not know where to start or who to call; that is why this month, we wanted to share options and knowledge on what is available to us as we all continue on our path of aging through life. Although our resource can not provide all of the answers, we hope that you take the time to review each of the resources within this month's "New Year, New You" edition. Finding options of resources to guide you through the current chapter as well as your next chapters of life. We Wish You a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year! From Our Family to Yours;

VETERANS BENEFITS

2022 VA DISABILITY AND PENSION RATES Cost of Living Adjustment in 2022

The increase, approved unanimously by Congress in October, took effect December 1st. Most veterans will see the increase on their January 1st paycheck. Each year, the Veterans Administration recommends cost of living adjustments to ensure inflation does not erode disabled veterans’ purchasing power. Throughout the years, VA disability rates have stayed the same or increased based on the COLA set by the Social Security Administration. The increase is meant to help the benefits keep pace with the rising costs of energy, rent and groceries. The COLA adjustment will help veterans, their dependents and surviving spouses pay for everyday necessities, bills and other qualified items.

Disabled veterans and their survivors will see a 5.9% cost of living adjustment (COLA) in their VA disability compensation rates in 2022. This is one of the largest increases in more than a decade, and it’s on top of a similar increase in Social Security benefits. To put this in perspective, a 50% disabled veteran with a spouse and one child who currently receives $1099.83 per month will receive an additional $64.89 per month. The last significant pay raise for VA disability took place in 2008 with a 5.8% COLA increase.

LEGAL MATTERS

WHAT IT MEANS TO NEED ‘NURSING HOME LEVEL OF CARE’ FOR MEDICAID ELIGIBILITY When applying for Medicaid’s long-term care coverage, in addition to the strict income and asset limits, you must demonstrate that you need a level of care typically provided in a nursing home. Whether you are applying for nursing home coverage or through a Medicaid waiver program for coverage at home, you must meet the level-of-care requirement set by the state. However, each state has its own criteria for determining if you meet the mandated level of care, and the criteria are not always clear. The state looks at an applicant’s functional, medical, and cognitive abilities to determine if care in a nursing home is called for. In general, you must be unable to care for yourself or pose a danger to yourself without outside help. The following are the factors usually considered when making a level-of-care determination: • You need help with two or more “activities of daily living” (such as bathing, dressing, eating, moving, and going to the bathroom).

• You need frequent medical care, such as assistance with medication, injections, IVs, or other medical treatment. • Your cognitive ability is impaired by Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, you have trouble making decisions on your own, or you are unable to process information. • You have behavior problems, such as wandering away from home or aggressiveness. When assessing a Medicaid applicant, the state will conduct the evaluation. The state may require a doctor’s diagnosis. Still, it will also likely require the applicant to answer a series of questions about his or her ability to perform activities of daily living, the applicant’s mental abilities and behavior problems, and the applicant’s family’s ability to provide support. SOCIAL SECURITY

GET YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFIT STATEMENT We’ve made getting your Annual Benefit Statement even easier.

The Benefit Statement, also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S, is a tax form we mail each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from us in the previous year. You can use this information when you file your tax return, as it shows how much Social Security income to report to the Internal Revenue Service. If you live in the United States and you need a replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, go online to get your instant, printable replacement form using your personal my Social Security account at www.ssa.gov/myaccount. Look for your replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S for the previous tax year in your personal account after February 1. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document to your computer or email it to yourself. If you don’t have a my Social Security account, creating one is very easy to do and usually takes less than 10 minutes. And that’s not all you can do with a personal account. If you receive benefits or have Medicare, your personal my Social Security account is also the best way to: • Request a replacement Social Security number card (in most states and the District of Columbia).

HEALTHY LIVING FOR THE SOUL

How do you see yourself in 2022? What if you could create a new focus by simply changing your mind and attitude? Picture this! That’s right; you can create a new picture of what you desire. Has setting New Year’s Resolutions become cliché? Allow that thought to diminish as you focus on changing your mind and changing yourself. Remember each sunrise comes with an opportunity for change, acceptance, and transformation.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU, NEW FOCUS How do you see yourself in 2022? What if you could create a new focus by simply changing your mind and attitude? Picture this! That’s right; you can create a new picture of what you desire. Has setting New Year’s Resolutions become cliché? Allow that thought to diminish as you focus on changing your mind and changing yourself. Remember each sunrise comes with an opportunity for change, acceptance, and transformation. Have you created a vision board? This is a perfect time to make one. Stroll through old magazines, clip images and lettering that attract you. Changing your food intake is part of your transformation plan? Clip foods that fit your new outlook. Cut out images of people on the move walking, biking, surfing, kayaking or gardening. Picture any activities you aspire to continue or add to your experience. Play with this process. Visit the school supply section at the market; pick up glue sticks, glitter, and colorful markers. Have fun! Recycle a gift box for the base of the vision board. Make it 3D! Prefer an online tech activity? Search for vision boards projects. Yes, there is an App for that, like, Perfectly Happy Vision Board. Visit www.developgoodhabits.com for multiple on line vision board apps. Pick the new you project that fits your interest and lifestyle. Why not create a list of positive affirmations to write in the spaces of your vision board or pick up some colorful index cards and/or post-it notes to write your new you, new focus, New Year affirmations. Here are a few for inspiration: • I am eager and welcome new experiences. • This year brings me joy in unexpected ways. • I am vibrant, alive, and fully present in all I do. • My health is my priority; I do the things that nurture my body and my well-being. • In the present moment, I feel joy, peace, and gratitude for my life. • I am releasing the old and making room for the new. • I seek fun activities and uplifting people in my life. • When I need support, I find it. • My vision is clear and I am eager for this New Year.

Remember to affirm the positive in your life, avoid negative words like: don’t, hate, have to, shouldn’t or even should. Keep the affirmations in a place of peace, joy and in the present so that they affirm and align with your new focus. Surround yourself with activities and people that support and enhance your intentions. Years ago, I had a counselor say to me, “I am only telling you what I need to hear.” Believe me, that is exactly what I am doing with these suggestions. Be gentle with yourself. Avoid setting lofty and unreachable goals or resolutions. Instead, focus on right now, present moment mindfulness. I am not saying goals are bad, but in looking toward them, sometimes we miss the bliss of the now. Happy, healthy living for your soul in this New Year. MENTAL HEALTH MOMENT

YOGA FOR THE

As we age, our bodies, of course, change. Sometimes the changes occur in ways we may not expect. Flexibility may diminish, especially as the types of activities we engage in change.

AT ANY AGE

of motion. A limited range of motion can make older adults predisposed to falls and get in the way of daily activities. Increased flexibility can help keep seniors safe and allow them to care for themselves more independently. Many yoga postures help with spinal flexibility. Keeping the spine flexible reduces the likelihood of stiffness and pain in the back and neck, helping you feel younger and healthier.

Yoga Promotes Bone and Joint Health

As you age, bones naturally lose density, and joints become stiffer. A gentle yoga practice can effectively prevent and slow bone density loss and is safe for those with osteoporosis. Whether you are looking to prevent osteoporosis or relieve painful symptoms caused by an existing bone condition or fracture, yoga postures and stretches can be extremely beneficial.

Yoga Helps to Reduce Anxiety

Yoga allows you to slow down your breathing and meditate, creating a quiet time for calm reflection. Giving your mind a break from the frantic pace of everyday life can relieve stress and keep you centered and organized. Many people who practice yoga regularly report improvement in their mood and sleep patterns. For seniors, beginning a new exercise regimen can be intimidating, especially if you are out of shape or dealing with limiting health conditions. Starting a beginner yoga practice can be a great way to get active and reduce stress levels. However, the benefits of yoga for people over 50 are many – from healthy joints and bones to increased flexibility and improved sleep.

Benefits of Yoga Are Many!

Exercise is a critical part of healthy aging, but it presents certain risks to seniors. High-intensity exercises – such as running, cycling, and weight-lifting – can put a strain on the body and lead to injuries. Gentle yoga practice is an excellent low-impact exercise option. Yoga is not only safe for older practitioners but effective in maintaining mental and physical health.

Yoga Helps Seniors Become More Flexible

Yoga involves gentle, guided stretching, which can help seniors develop greater flexibility and improve their range 10

Let your instructor know about any injuries or health issues you have. Ask your instructor for help if you need it. New practitioners should also remember that they can take a seated position or child’s pose if they need to rest. The benefits are many and worth exploring. Who knows? You may even make a few new friends in the process, another great benefit! VFW AND VFW AUXILIARY

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH AND ADULTS

Did you know that the VFW and VFW Auxiliary offer scholarships? Yes, we have scholarships to help young people and adults who wish to further their education. One of our scholarships offers a National first prize of $30,000, and that’s nothing to sneeze about. Many of you probably have family members that could benefit from our Scholarship Program. Maybe you have children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends who are eligible. The eligibility for participation is open to all youth in public, private or charter schools or homeschool programs. Yes, all students, not just children of VFW or Auxiliary members. The goal of our program is to promote student participation, community awareness, recipient recognition, and increase funding.

This year you have an opportunity to help us award more scholarships to more students. Donate to the Patriotic Art or Continuing Education Funds. You may contact National Headquarters at 816-561-8655 or email info@vfwauxiliary. org for more information.

Three of the scholarships offer great rewards for our youth. We need to ensure our youth are aware of our patrioticthemed programs as our youth are the leaders of the future. Each of our scholarships encourages patriotism, assists in attaining an education, and helps students reach their full potential. The fourth scholarship is for persons 18 years of age and older and is a needs-based scholarship open to VFW Auxiliary members, their spouses, and children. Maybe you know someone who fits these criteria? This is an excellent opportunity for someone to further their education.

For more information about the VFW Auxiliary, visit our National website at https://vfwauxiliary.org/.

There are five Auxiliaries in Volusia County: • Debary Post 8093 • Deland Post 2380 • New Smyrna Beach Post 4250 • Daytona Beach Post 1590 • Port Orange Post 3282 • Additionally, in Flagler County, Palm Coast Post 8696

Sandi Hendriks is the Department of Florida’s Auxiliary Scholarships Chairman and District 19 President for the 2021 – 2022 Program Year. Sandi joined the VFW Auxiliary 8093 in Debary, FL in 2007 under the eligibility of her father, World War II Army veteran, Lt. Col. George R. Dufresne.

Original Medicare pays for much, but not all, of the cost for covered health care services and supplies. Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policies sold by private companies, can help pay some of the remaining health care costs for covered services and supplies, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Some Medigap policies also offer coverage for services that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S. Generally, Medigap doesn’t cover long-term care (like care in a nursing home), vision or dental services, hearing aids, eyeglasses, or private-duty nursing.

HOW DOES MEDIGAP WORK?

Aging Times Magazine | January 2022

Medigap Plans are Standardized

Medigap must follow federal and state laws designed to protect you, and they must be clearly identified as “Medicare Supplement Insurance.” Insurance companies can sell you only a “standardized” plan, identified in most states as plans A – D, F, G, and K – N. All plans offer the same basic benefits, but some offer additional benefits so you can choose which one meets your needs. IMPORTANT: Plans C and F are no longer available to people new to Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. However, if you were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020, but not yet enrolled, you may be able to buy Plan C or Plan F. People new to Medicare on or after January 1, 2020, have the right to buy Plans D and G instead of Plans C and F.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT MEDIGAP?

• Before you can buy Medigap, you must have Part A and Part B. • You pay the private insurance company a monthly premium for Medigap in addition to the monthly Part B premium you pay to Medicare. Also, if you buy Medigap and a separate Medicare drug plan from the same company, you may need to make two separate premium payments. • A Medigap policy only covers one person. Spouses must buy separate coverage. • You can’t have drug coverage in both Medigap and your Medicare drug plan. • It’s important to compare Medigap policies since the costs can vary between policies for exactly the same coverage, and may go up as you get older. Some states limit Medigap premium costs.

MEDICARE MINUTE • In some states, you may be able to buy another type of Medigap policy called Medicare SELECT. Medicare SELECT is a type of Medigap policy sold in some states that requires you to use hospitals and, in some cases, doctors within its network to be eligible for full insurance benefits (except in an emergency). If you buy Medicare SELECT, you have rights to change your mind within 12 months and switch to standard Medigap. NOTE: Medigap plans sold to people who are new to Medicare on or after January 1, 2020 aren’t allowed to cover the Part B deductible. Because of this, Plans C and F are no longer available to people new to Medicare on or after January 1, 2020.

When to Buy

• The best time to buy a Medigap policy is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This 6-month period begins on the first day of the month in which you’re 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. (Some states have additional Open Enrollment Periods.) After this enrollment period, you may not be able to buy Medigap. If you’re able to buy Medigap, it may cost more. • If you delay enrolling in Part B because you have group health coverage based on your (or your spouse’s) current employment, your Medigap Open Enrollment Period won’t start until you sign up for Part B. • Federal law generally doesn’t require insurance companies to sell Medigap to people under 65. If you’re under 65, you might not be able to buy the policy you want, or any policy, until you turn 65. However, some states require Medigap insurance companies to sell Medigap policies to people under 65. If you’re able to buy one, it may cost more.

CAN I HAVE MEDIGAP AND A MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PLAN?

• If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, it’s illegal for anyone to sell you a Medigap policy unless you’re switching back to Original Medicare. If you aren’t planning to leave your Medicare Advantage Plan, and someone tries to sell you a Medigap policy, report it to your State Insurance Department. • If you have Medigap and join a Medicare Advantage Plan, you may want to drop Medigap. You can’t use Medigap to pay your Medicare Advantage Plan copayments, deductibles, and premiums because Medicare Advantage Plans provide other protections that Medigap doesn’t. IMPORTANT: If you want to cancel your Medigap policy, contact your insurance company. In most cases, if you drop your Medigap policy to join a Medicare Advantage Plan, you may not be able to get the same policy back. continued on page 14

Aging Times Magazine | January 2022

13

continued from page 13

• If you join a Medicare Advantage Plan for the first time, and you aren’t happy with the plan, you’ll have special rights under federal law to buy a Medigap policy and a separate Medicare drug plan if you return to Original Medicare within 12 months of joining the Medicare Advantage Plan. • If you had Medigap before you joined, you may be able to get the same policy back if the company still sells it. If it isn’t available, you can buy another policy. • If you joined a Medicare Advantage Plan when you were first eligible for Medicare (and you’re not happy with the plan), you can choose from any Medigap policy when you switch to Original Medicare within the first year of joining. NOTE: If you don’t drop your Medicare Advantage Plan and return to Original Medicare within 12 months of joining, generally, you must keep your Medicare Advantage Plan for the rest of the year. You can disenroll or change plans during the Open Enrollment Period or if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. Depending on the type of Special Enrollment Period, you may or may not have the right to buy a Medigap policy.

SUPPORT YOUR MOM & POP STORES Hello 2022! I'm not sure if 2021 turned out exactly as I expected. I am looking forward to 2022, though. I'm a big fan of building on past successes. Successes build positive momentum; it doesn't matter if it's in sports or communities or in life. One of the things I'm reminded of is that momentum is a powerful force. It is generally easy to keep going if it's going your way. But, if it's not going your way, it's hard to stop.

Probate Elder Law Business Estate Planning Real Estate

When I was a kid, my family went to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. I remember a 2.5-ton lead wheel there that even as a kid, I could grip the handle and get it moving. But, once it was going, it would almost break my wrists when trying to get it to stop. It has taken a while to regain the momentum that COVID brought to a halt for many small businesses. Many of you have focused on shopping small for the last several months. Hopefully, coming off the holiday season, these mom-and-pop businesses are experiencing the feeling that things are going their way. You are encouraged to continue to shop small in 2022 and help your community build on its successes. You and your community will continue to thrive as successes become more and more frequent.

WHY YOU NEED A REALTOR WITH AN SRES®

A Senior Real Estate Specialist® (SRES®) has unique training and experience in helping home buyers and sellers in your situation.

As we all make this journey through life, gaining knowledge, wisdom, and experience, we also acquire age. Each stage of our lives has unique challenges and rewards. When we are over 50, we all face different obstacles; finances, retirement, downsizing, relocating, medical and health concerns, or other major life events. Selling a home can be an emotional time, especially if it involves other life events requiring this change. Why should you contact an SRES® REALTOR®?

• An SRES® understands that selling your home can be a difficult decision. It may just be the need to downsize or a necessity due to a life event. An SRES® understands the issues facing older adults. They can help you navigate your choices by taking a no-pressure approach and may be able to offer alternative suggestions to help you stay in your home. • Your SRES® is there to support you and make you feel comfortable with the selling and/or buying process. Most importantly, they prioritize looking out for your best interests throughout all aspects of your transaction; they will be there when you need them and tailor the marketing process to your specific needs. • An SRES® has invested time and training to achieve this designation to be properly equipped to assist the over 50 sellers or buyers. • Your SRES® can draw on a network of other professionals who focus on clients over 50: Estate Planners, Financial Advisors, Tax Counselors who can help you understand the financial consequences of selling your home. They can also assist you with interior staging and trade contractors to prepare for the marketing and showing of your home, as well as post-sale concerns like moving specialists, estate sale organizers, and transitional coaching for your new location. Having an SRES® working with you on the sale or purchase of a home gives you peace of mind knowing you are not alone in the transaction. They can help you look at or discover options you may not have been aware of. They can also help you avoid loan schemes or scams that have victimized 50 and older buyers. Every person over 50 has unique concerns, needs, or circumstances. It would

help if you had an SRES® that will work with you as the individual(s) you are, not someone trying to make you fit into what works best for them. Some considerations to discuss about your next home: • Do you want an adult (over 55, 62, etc.) community? • What size home do you need/desire? • Do you want a structured HOA community, and do you have a budget restriction? • Do you desire a golf course community? • What amenities do you want the community to have: pool, exercise area, pickleball, shuffleboard, community center, etc.? • Do you want to do your own lawn care, exterior, or interior maintenance? • Do you have pets (or plan to have), and what restrictions does the community have? • Do you need assistance with daily activities? • Will you have family living with you? • Would you like to be near medical facilities, shopping, etc.? These questions, and others, can be imperative to ensure you make the right move to the right place. You need an SRES® that is knowledgeable of the areas you are seeking and have the experience and information to guide you to make the best decision for your specific needs. At Central Florida Home Pros we have streamlined the process of buying or selling a home to make it easier for you! We have built a team of industry experts to make sure you have access to local home inspectors, contractors, interior designers, service providers, property managers, lending professionals, title and escrow companies, painters, gardeners, plumbers, electricians home warranty companies and more to provide you with the best service possible.

NEW YEAR, NEW HOME FINDING A NEW PLACE TO LAND The beginning of each new year brings a fresh perspective on life, and for some, the desire for new beginnings. Each year we make a list of habits we want to adopt and places we want to travel, and sometimes the dreams of our future take us away from the homes we've known and loved for years. Sometimes, to move fully into the next phase in our lives, we have to let go of the things that keep us rooted in the past. The older we get, the less time we want to spend cleaning our spare bedrooms and trekking up and down staircases with folded laundry, so it only makes sense that adults all over the world mark the new year as the perfect opportunity to find a new place to call home. Packing up and waving goodbye to your home is rarely as easy as some make it sound. Your family home holds precious memories. It's the place you may have raised your children and snuggled your grandchildren. Perhaps you hosted a weekly card game or worked for years to create a beautiful garden. Saying goodbye to your home may feel like letting go of some of those things. But really, all of those feelings and precious memories travel with you wherever you go. You may not be able to bring the fireplace hearth with you where you sat and read Christmas stories to your children, but you'll find the perfect cozy nook for reading in your new home. Perhaps a comfy chair with a beautiful view or a big sofa with enough room for all of your grandkids. Of course, you already know all of this intellectually. You're smart, and the years have made you wise. But sometimes, it's difficult to convince your heart that it's time to go. The simple fact that you're here, reading this article, is evidence that you may be ready to make a move. As with any significant change, the decision to move should be made with consideration for the years to come. Your life will continue to evolve and change, and you may need or want different things in five years than you do today. Make a list of all the things you want and don't want in your next home. For example, you may want to live in a community with a pool or to have enough space to host your children for holidays and birthdays. Check! Conversely, you may wish to avoid houses with stairs or that have a lawn you need to mow. Check! You can narrow down your real estate needs in reasonably specific terms when you know what you want your life to look and feel like. 16

Aging Times Magazine | January 2022

I'd guess that in your lifetime, you've spent a fair amount of time worrying about other people and making big choices based upon their needs. You've brought joy to your family, worked hard, and helped them when you could. Perhaps it's your turn? It's time for you to set your needs first as you go into this next journey of your life. Let your comfort and dreams for your future sit front seat as you search for the place you want to land. One thing you might consider about your future is how much care you'll need as you age. If you suspect you'll need more support from your family and medical team in the coming years, it may not be wise to move far away from your support system. While a move to the Blue Ridge Mountains sounds ideal now, it may be problematic if you end up with an injury or illness and are far away from your family. For many, retirement communities offer the perfect combination of independence and support. Packed with amenities, activities, and a built-in community, they're a one-stop shop for all your retirement needs. As you say goodbye to your home from years past and hello to your home of tomorrow, you may find yourself having to let go of some treasured objects. It's never easy to let go of the items you've collected over the decades, and chances are your children may not be as interested in your collections as you have been. People often get stuck at this stage. They cling to what had been and what was beautiful in the past and drag it into the future with them. Many of your belongings may make the cut, but others may not. This new home you're moving to isn't just a new place to store your things, it's a home, and it will have a life and a spirit of its own. Paring down may sound scary, but once you get into it, you may find it feels like freedom. As you move through the process, determining what type of home you want and choosing the items you'll bring along with you, it's easy to get wrapped up in the myth that you must wait to purchase a home until the market is perfect. The truth is, when you're selling a

house to buy a new one, you're bound to be on the right side of the equation at one point or another—buying when prices are high means you've also sold when prices are high and have hopefully made good money off the sale of your home. And, of course, the same works in reverse. Before you panic, sit down with trusted advisors and get your finances in order. You deserve a beautiful, safe place to live and the confidence of knowing that you made a great financial decision. If this is your year to make a move, congratulations! Whether you're sizing up or sizing down, moving into a retirement community, or onto a farm, we hope your new home brings you all the joy your old home did and more. After all, we know with great certainty that home isn't a building or a town; it's a feeling. Home is a spirit that appears when you gather with people you love. Journalist Ellen Goodman once said, "We spend January 1st walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives ... not looking for flaws but for potential." This year, no matter where you find yourself, may you be surrounded by love, and may you find endless potential. Believe it or not, we all start aging from the time we are born. As we age, we become more seasoned and more knowledgeable about the things around us while making decisions that impact our futures. These futures may include transitions, moves, and accommodations that become our navigation through our many chapters of life. For example, many purchased their first home around the time they decided to settle down and get married or have children. However, the opposite may occur when the children move out; we look to downsize. Typically, in these scenarios, we work with our Realtor partners and find what will be the next fit for the next chapter of life. However, there is no manual to say this is the natural path of what to do when it comes to senior living.

When it comes to senior living, we don’t often have the opportunity or luxury to shop for our next home and pick based on feeling or love. That was until the concept of assisted living placement services. This concept of “howto” find the perfect home has been the saving grace for families all around the country and extended families who may not be able to be present in the decision-making process. To many, it becomes the eyes and ears of opportunity and, finally, the ability to have expertise in all senior living options, not just one. Many are probably asking how does this process work and what exactly can it do for me. Allow us to take you on an adventure. Beginning with the reality of what we are going to do, the question becomes a reality. Working to age in place is a goal for many but may not always be a reality until you are set for success. That is where placement specialists come in. Establishing yourself with a placement company local to where you are seeking guidance on living options will provide you with ample opportunity to sit down and discuss potential budget ranges, care needs, and what you want in your next phase of living. Let’s face it; senior living has changed dramatically over the last five years, from standard “facility” like builds to luxurious retirement communities with pools, activities, social living, and more trips and outings than we could imagine! But how do you know it is the one? The process of determining those needs mentioned above. Handson specialists can narrow down potential living options, schedule virtual or in-person tours, show photos, set up meetings with lifestyle specialists and coordinate all the ins and outs of your visits. One advantage and possibly the best advantage is these services are oftentimes FREE to you! Specialists specialize in bringing forth the information 18

to you based on your needs and wants in many ways acting as a concierge of senior living. But what if you want to plan your own move and look at all of your options. This is completely okay as well. Just understanding what senior living options are available is knowledge worth knowing. Whether you, a loved one or a friend working to be educated and proactive is an advantage for anyone. Ask yourself, do you know the difference between senior communities such as assisted living, independent living, and Continuing Care Communities (CCRC’s)? Let’s take a moment to start with the basics of what exactly they are and some of the advantages.

Independent Living Communities or Senior Housing

When referenced, senior housing or independent living communities are just what you hear in their name. Apartments, townhouses, or condominiums for seniors and only seniors. Some may categorize this by age, typically 55 and older, or as a part of a complex with multiple offerings. Independent living allows seniors to live within the community, however, come and go as they please, coordinate their activities, travels, etc. For many, it serves as its own freestanding homes or building just for seniors.

Assisted Living Communities

Assisted living communities provide similar setups as independent living communities in many instances. However, they tailor to those who may need some continued on page 20

assistance or maybe planning for the future where they know they need more “hands-on” assistance. Assistance may be with needing a location that offers meals, assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing or dressing, and in many instances, medication assistance. Depending on their licensure, these communities can tend to seniors and those in need with a variety of care options. Some are all-inclusive in pricing, and others are à la carte based on the services the individual or couple may need.

Memory Care

Memory care is a specialized portion of senior living that is truly just that a specialty. Assisted living communities that have the privilege to offer memory care services provide seniors or those with memory deficits such as dementia or Alzheimer’s the opportunity to progress based on their condition’s needs and their individual needs. Apartments and studios are ways of living with enhancements such as lighting to indicate time of day or guidance to the bathroom, music designed to promote response, shadow boxes outside of doors to enhance the potential of locating the correct apartment, and much more. Technology, innovations, and specialty training programs have allowed advancements in memory care activities, designs, and living to meet individual needs. Whether you prefer memory care that is a stand-alone community or integrated within an assisted living community, the options are customized to those who need this specialized service and care. Memory care may follow the same path as assisted living in that the cost is all-inclusive for services or maybe an à la carte community where you design your cost and services based on the needs.

journey through life. The luxury with a CCRC is majority of the time they can tailor to fit your needs all within one complex. Whether the need is for senior housing within independent living within a cottage or home setting versus an apartment or perhaps the need to transition into assisted living from independent living, both environments are typically offered within the CCRC. Additionally, in the event, skilled nursing care at a skilled nursing facility or memory care may also be provided as a complement of services within the CCRC. All of which are within the same campus and locations to fit your needs. As a whole, living arrangements can be overwhelming no matter the age or time of life. Determining the path that best suits you, your family, or your loved one can also be overwhelming. OKAY, NOW WHAT?

Let's get real! Anyone who has ever moved knows how stressful it can be—whether downsizing, rightsizing, or just relocating, moving is one of the most nerve-racking things seniors can do. Whether you decide to move or are forced to move because you need a safer living environment, need a smaller, easier-to-manage home, or have reached the stage where it's no longer safe to live alone or care for themselves without help. It's challenging for older adults and their families when it's time to pack up the house they've lived in for 30 years or more and start over somewhere else. Handling the details can be overwhelming and difficult for anyone. Senior Transition Experts realize that the adult children of aging parents have limited or no time to help with all the sorting, packing, moving, and resettling that goes with a significant move or downsizing. In addition, they probably have full-time jobs of their own and may live great distances from their aging parents. Some seniors may even be single or without children and don't have help of any kind. Moving and transitioning can be overwhelming and stress seniors to the max. Even when family help is available, emotions can run high, making the process trying for all. We anticipate needs and can facilitate the entire transition process, relieving the stress from seniors and their family members. We guide you with what to take, what to leave, what to get rid of, and what to sell. Since downsizing often requires a bit of creativity and imagination, we can develop a floor plan of the new space and stage it so that the client can visualize what furniture will fit and where it will go. We aim to offer a seamless transition – by organizing and facilitating the move and setting up and organizing the new home just in time for you to walk right in. We can even facilitate the old house's listing, staging, and sale.

We are here to help you or the people you love move on to the next phase of life by eliminating the stress associated with the move. We offer free consultations and a veteran’s discount. Our goal is to transition you with exceptional results smoothly! In addition to owning The Senior Transition Experts, LLC, Kathy is a highly accomplished and results–driven Licensed Registered Nurse (RN), Case Manager, and nationally Certified Elder Care Coordinator (CECC). VACATION SPOTLIGHT

NEW YEAR INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL — REAL TALK It’s become the standard that every change of the calendar to the new year we tend to set ourselves new goals. Whether it’s ‘New Year, New You’ weight-loss goals or grand adventure goals, getting organized or trying something new—whatever it is, it becomes your January focus. It’s no wonder that in the travel industry, January is one of the biggest times of the year to start planning your next trip. Families get together at Thanksgiving and Christmas or Hanukkah and close out the year with a wonderful new year celebration to start planning adventures for the following year. Whether the past year has held health issues, financial issues, or just the ever-growing amount of stress in our daily lives, closing the year out and starting anew leaves a renewed sense of joy, enthusiasm, euphoria for what’s ahead. For me, it’s all about the experiences. I’m not one of those people who think changing the calendar means you’re going to suddenly accomplish all the things that you put down on paper. You have to put the work in to accomplish the goals that you’ve set for yourself. But every Christmas and holiday season, I wish for my friends and family the gift of experiences. Sometimes it’s the experience of a new dining venue. Other times it’s the experience of family time playing a new game or going bowling. But I always wish for the experience of travel. Over the course of the last year and a half, we’ve all dealt with ever-changing schedules when it comes to travel. This isn’t new, and it won’t be going away. But if you want to travel internationally, you can. There’s nobody stopping you from traveling internationally. The thing stopping you is fear. I’m not saying that the fear isn’t rightfully there. But I also believe that you need to go into experiences with a fair amount of research and education, as well as some trust. Here’s the thing: people are afraid to go to Europe or Asia because they saw that Coronavirus happened there first. But that means that those affected countries have had a longer amount of time to cope, plan, and understand moving about and traveling during these times.

On a regular basis, we work with clients in my office who’ve been misinformed or misunderstood what the news was telling them about traveling to a certain country. Our job is to make sure that our clients are adequately prepared to travel and fulfill entry requirements to be able to enjoy their amazing adventure planned during the time of COVID. We’ve had clients come back from exploring Europe, from visiting Canada, from experiencing Central America, and from enjoying cruises over the last several months. The most important thing is to know where you want to go, and then we can help take it away from there. Some countries require a PCR test before you arrive. Others require an antigen test. Most require vaccination documentation, as well as some sort of paperwork that you’ll fill out before arrival into their country. And we’ll make sure you’re up to date on all the current protocols so there’s less confusion and stress so you can enjoy your experiences. Look that fear in the eye and tell it it’s time to be put away. Trust that we can help you plan your best vacation, and we’ll help make sure you’re ready for whatever needs to be done to get there. Is traveling a bit different right now? Yes. But it doesn’t need to be impossible. Let’s start your 2022 off right by planning those experiences you’ve been dying to have. WE MUSTACHE YOU A QUESTION ??

GIVE BLOOD

AND SAVE LIVES Happy New Year and Happy Blood Donation Month! Yes, it's true; January is the month we celebrate the lifesaving gift of blood and plasma donation. Did you know that one blood donation can save up to three lives? The statistics are staggering. There are many important uses for donated blood, including lifesaving transfusions for patients with sickle cell anemia, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, patients who are receiving organ transplants, and patients who have suffered severe trauma. If you think about it, blood donation is something of a miracle. Blood donors give a pint of blood each time, and that one donation is used to save lives within 42 days of when it was donated. Then, within approximately 24 hours, your body replaces the volume of blood you lost, and within weeks it replaces the red blood cells you contributed. Your body replenishes itself, and your heart is full, knowing that you've made a difference. Typically, nearly 7 million people give blood each year. That sounds like a lot. However, it is only 3% of eligible donors. When too few people give blood, supply can drop, leaving some people in to go without the blood they desperately need. Today, the Red Cross is experiencing an emergency blood shortage. Amid fears of the COVID-19 Delta variant outbreak, donor turnout is dangerously low. Unlike many lifesaving treatments, human blood and platelets cannot be mass-produced, so hospitals depend on donations from community volunteers. Blood donation is a simple and free way to contribute to the community in which you live. This month, as we celebrate Blood Donation Month, we hope you'll join the millions of people who are saving lives each year by donating blood locally. There's no more fantastic way to start the new year than with the spirit of generosity and the warm feeling that comes along with helping your neighbors. For more information about giving blood, search for blood donation locations in your area. We promise you this is one gift you'll never regret giving. The goal of Sudoku is to fill in a 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, row, and 3x3 section contain the numbers between 1 to 9. At the beginning of the game, the 9x9 grid will have some of the squares filled in. Your job is to use logic to fill in the missing digits and complete the grid. Don’t forget, a move is incorrect if: • Any row contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 • Any column contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 • Any 3x3 grid contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 LAST MONTH’S ANSWERS

FAMILY RECIPE FOLLOWING TRADITION

BLACK EYED PEAS Our culture, background, location or just desire to try new things may spark tradition in our lifestyle. Whether the tradition is a specific holiday meal or perhaps following “lady luck” through superstition many people believe in following tradition for good luck on New Years in order to start the new year in a positive light and set up for success! With that we figured why not share a southern tradition that dates back to the 1800’s, Black Eyed Peas. There are a variety of recipes that are all over the internet, the best one is in the eye of the consumer but this one I tend to enjoy quite a bit and it is super easy as a DIY in the Slow-Cooker! Ingredients 1 pound black eyed peas 4 -6 slices of bacon, chopped 2 cups of cooked ham, chopped 1 ham bone, if available 1 medium onion, diced 3 cups chicken broth 3 cup water ½ teaspoon garlic powder salt & pepper, to taste Optional For a kick of spice add diced jalapenos to preference Directions 1. If you are using fresh black eyed peas, open and rinse your black eyed peas. 2. Place all ingredients into a slow-cooker. 3. Cook on low 5-6 hours or high 3-4 stirring frequently (black eyed peas become tender during cooking process, finish to tender preference.). 4. Salt to taste. Enjoy with white- rice or with your meat of choice! Does your family have a "go-to" family recipe and a story to share? Aging Times is looking to share a family heirloom within our magazine each month and we need your families story to make it perfect! If you have a recipe to share and a story please submit via email to marketing.agingtree@gmail.com. We want to share your story and recipe with our readers! Aging Times Magazine | January 2022
