FOUNDERS/OWNERS Priscilla & Bruce Kincaid CO-FOUNDER Janet Dixon MANAGING EDITOR Priscilla Kincaid, RN, BSN, MBA

February is often referred to as love month. While we just ended the holiday season, we find stores lined with hearts, red, and pink designs to bring us into the new season. A Season of love. As a child, I can remember watching my grandparents and wishing to have the love they had. Their endless devotion, laughs, and dedication to one another showed such a pure love that lasted a lifetime. Through a child’s eyes, it was as if they’d been together an eternity and had the type of love you find in the movies. The truth was they shared that once in a lifetime, soulmate love, and they knew it and never took their time together for granted. The inspiration is one that hits home. It paved the way for me to begin my adventure of finding love, filled with inspiration. I was blessed to say that I experience it daily and have never taken that feeling for granted while cherishing our time together. Love comes in many variations and forms while pulling on our heartstrings. Whether we focus on the love of children, family, friends, and yes, that “butterfly in your tummy,” take your breath away, love at first sight feeling it all ties us to emotions. Having the experience to create memories, families, and a love that lasts a lifetime is one that we hold on to near and dear to our hearts. In this edition, we wanted to pull on those heartstrings and share experiences for those not only who are privileged to share love but also for those who have loved and lost but will always continue to love. Love comes from many walks of life, and we wanted to focus on Heart Month, tying in heart-healthy activities and being mindful of how to stay healthy and with our loved ones. I hope you take time and enjoy this edition, find time to spend with your loved ones, and take care of your heart which brings us together and keeps us together. From Our Family to Yours;

Set a goal, make a plan, and save automatically. We encourage you to pledge to save for America Saves Week at www.americasavesweek.org. Please visit our website for more useful information on ways to help you plan for your retirement at www.ssa.gov/retirement. You are never too young to begin saving. LEGAL MATTERS

MEDICARE VS. MEDICAID FOR LONG-TERM CARE WHAT WILL THEY PAY? They sound alike, but they aren’t. Medicaid and Medicare are quite different programs. Everyone 65 and over (some younger) that receive Social Security benefits also receive Medicare. On the other hand, Medicaid is a program that helps pay for long-term care for individuals with limited income and assets. To be eligible for Medicaid, you must meet the program’s income and asset guidelines. Also, unlike Medicare, which is federal, Medicaid is a joint state-federal program. Each state operates its own Medicaid system, but it must conform to federal guidelines. The most significant difference between Medicare and Medicaid is that Medicaid covers the cost of a nursing home (and some home care or assisted living), while Medicare, for the most part, does not. Medicare fully covers 20 days of rehabilitative care in a “skilled nursing” facility that follows a stay of three or more days in a hospital. But for days 21 through 100, you will have a

co-payment of $167.50 unless you have a supplemental policy. And if you stop making “progress,” Medicare will stop paying. When it comes to long-term care, Medicaid has become the long-term care insurance of the middle class. Lacking access to alternatives such as paying privately or being covered by a long-term care insurance policy, most people pay out of their own pockets for long-term care until they become eligible for Medicaid. But that could have been avoided had they done some planning. The best results happen when someone plans at least five years before needing Medicaid. But even those that plan at the last-minute benefit significantly. Scott Selis, Elder Law Attorney, estate planning, probate, long-term care, government benefits, (Medicaid, Veteran’s benefits). Scott was Assistant Chair of Florida Bar’s Elder Law section, and Elder Law Attorney of the Year 2016.

With empathy and compassion, Selis Law Firm helps bring peace of mind to families of all ages as they plan for illness, disability and death.

WHAT IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH AND WHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT? Since I was a little boy, Black History Month has been celebrated in February. I remember writing countless school reports on the contributions and achievements of great African Americans, some famous and some unknown, to the United States. Perhaps one of the most important African Americans is Carter G. Woodson, a Harvard-educated historian, and author. In 1915, Woodson and Jesse Moorland, a minister, started the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. Despite heavy public pushback, the organization survived under their leadership. Throughout the years, support for the organization grew but wasn’t as widespread as Woodson had envisioned. An event was needed in which schools and communities could share African American History through organized celebrations, performances, educational seminars, and lectures. In February 1926, Negro History Week was born. But Woodson wasn’t done. He devoted his life and career to the promotion of this cause. He wrote more than a dozen books throughout his career, including Mis-Education of the Negro in 1933. Mis-Education, perhaps the most famous book of this genre, has become required reading in African-American Studies in numerous colleges and universities. Woodson died on April 3, 1950, but his legacy lives on. The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s dramatically influenced the decade and created social awareness of African-American culture in the United States, and helped elevate Negro History Week to national prominence. In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially declared that February would become Black History Month. So, you may be asking yourself - Why February? Woodson chose the second week of February for Negro History Week to coincide with the birthdays of two men who had a tremendous positive impact on the status of the negro in the United States, President Abraham Lincoln, and Frederick Douglass. Lincoln’s Emancipation 10

Aging Times Magazine | February 2022

Proclamation paved the way for the abolition of slavery, and Douglass, an escaped slave, became a prominent leader in the fight to end slavery. When Woodson started Negro History Week in 1926, I don’t think he fully understood the impact that his brainchild would have not only in the United States but also throughout the world. He laid the groundwork for the most celebrated acknowledgment of the impressive achievements of black men and women in the fields of politics, education, science, law, sports, and entertainment. Woodson’s legacy lives on in the actions and accomplishments of all African-Americans. Vince Philip moved from Staten Island, New York to DeLand, Florida over 20 years ago. When he is not working as a marketing and graphic design professional, Vince enjoys traveling, writing and board gaming.

GET EXTRA HELP PAYING YOUR MEDICARE DRUG COSTS Extra Help is a program to help people with limited income and resources pay Medicare drug costs. You may qualify for Extra Help if your yearly income and resources are below these limits in 2021: Yearly Income

Other Resources

Single person

less than $19,320 less than $14,790

Married person living with a spouse and no other dependents

less than $26,130

less than $29,520

You may qualify even if you have a higher income (like if you still work, live in Alaska or Hawaii, or have dependents living with you). Resources include money in a checking or savings account, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs). Resources don’t include your home, car, household items, burial plot, up to $1,500 for burial expenses (per person), or life insurance policies. If you qualify for Extra Help and join a separate Medicare drug plan or Medicare Advantage Plan with Medicare drug coverage (Part D): • You’ll get help paying your drug coverage costs. • You won’t pay a late enrollment penalty. Cost & Coverage: Most people with Medicare can only make changes to their drug coverage at certain times of the year. If you have Medicaid or receive Extra Help, you may be able to make changes to your coverage one time during each of these periods: January - March, April - June, and July - September. If you make a change, it will begin the first day of the following month. You’ll have to wait for the next period to make another change. You can’t use this Special Enrollment Period October – December. However, all people with Medicare can make changes to their coverage October 15 – December 7. The changes will begin on January 1. You automatically qualify for Extra Help if you have Medicare and meet any of these conditions: • You have full Medicaid coverage. • You get help from your state Medicaid program paying your Part B premiums (in a Medicare Savings Program). • You get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Medicare will mail you a purple letter to let you know you automatically qualify for Extra Help. Keep this for your

records. You don’t need to apply for Extra Help if you get this letter. • If you don’t already have Medicare drug coverage (Part D), you must get it to use this Extra Help. • If you don’t have drug coverage, Medicare may enroll you in a separate Medicare drug plan so that you’ll be able to use the Extra Help. If Medicare enrolls you in a plan, you’ll get a yellow or green letter letting you know when your coverage begins, and you’ll have a Special Enrollment Period to change plans if you want to enroll in a different plan than the one Medicare enrolled you in. • Different plans cover different drugs. Check to see if the plan you’re enrolled in covers the drugs you use and if you can go to the pharmacies you want. Visit Medicare.gov/plan-compare or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) to compare your plan with other plans in your area. • If you have Medicaid and live in certain institutions (like a nursing home) or get home- and communitybased services, you pay nothing for your covered drugs.

MEDICARE MINUTE

If you don’t want to join a separate Medicare drug plan (for example, because you want only your employer or union coverage), call the plan listed in your letter, or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). Tell them you don’t want to be in a Medicare drug plan (“opt out”). Important: If you have employer or union coverage and you get Medicare drug coverage (Part D), you may lose your employer or union coverage (for you and your dependents) even if you qualify for Extra Help. Call your employer’s benefits administrator before you get Medicare drug coverage. Drug costs in 2022 for people who qualify are generally no more than $3.95 for each generic drug and $9.85 for each brand-name drug. Look on the Extra Help letters you get, or contact your plan to find out your exact costs. If you didn’t automatically qualify for Extra Help, you can apply any time online at socialsecurity.gov/i1020 or call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213. Note: When you apply for Extra Help, you can also begin the application process for a Medicare Savings Program. These state programs provide help with other Medicare costs. Social Security will send information to your state unless you tell them not to on the Extra Help application. To get answers to your questions about Extra Help and help choosing drug coverage, call your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE. Extra Help isn’t available in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, or American Samoa. Source: Medicare & You Handbook 2022: Section 7, Pg. 91

SIMPLY WITH

LOVE

10 Tips to Celebrate Valentine’s Day Everyone at some point or another has that Valentine’s Day anticipation, whether it be that we want to spend time with the one we love or reflect on the memory of our most memorable Valentine’s Day to date. These thoughts flood us with emotions and tie us to create or reflect on memories. So why not take some time to enjoy Valentine’s Day? The theory is “It’s the thought that counts” sentiment over what we receive or do. So here are some quick, simple ways that can put a smile on any Valentines’ face, no matter our age!

Classic Movie Rewind

Find a movie you and your sweetheart have memories tied to, pop some popcorn or enjoy your favorite movie snacks cuddled on the couch. Some great movies that come to mind include The Notebook, Casablanca, Titanic, Romeo and Juliet, or even The Princess Bride. Chances are there will always be that one movie that hits home!

Romantic Simple At-Home Dinner

For this one, consider what is easy you don’t have to necessarily cook it for it to be great. What is that one meal that brings you back to some of your beginning days? Crazy enough for me, it’s baked chicken nuggets and french fries! HEALTHY LIVING FOR THE SOUL

Done. Finished. No more men. Is it too late to become a nun? These thoughts ran through my head as I pedaled my tie-dyed, bell-bottomed, 24-year-old self along the black-top road to visit my old college friend on a sunny November day in 1977. Elaine and I met during my freshman year in college. I stood in the cafeteria line humming a song from a commercial. She surprised me when she asked, “Haines makes you feel good all under?” She recognized the jingle! “Want to join me for breakfast?” Her invitation began a lifetime friendship between the athletic tomboy and the jingle-humming girl. We each were the only girls in our family. I had five brothers, and she had two. She loved talking about her older brothers. One was married, attending a college in Iowa, and the other completing a tour of duty in Japan. “If you marry my brother, we could be the sisters we never had.” One day she came to my dorm room with tears in her eyes and shared, “Gary married a girl from Japan, now we can never be sisters.” Five years after college, as I stepped onto the gold shag carpet of my friend’s home, she shared that her recently divorced brother Rodney had moved to town and was opening a clinic. “I can’t wait for the two of you to meet.” Oh no! Warning bells sounded in my head. Not wanting to disappoint her with my no-more-men declaration, I said, “That’s nice, but I need to head home. It’s getting late.” The door opened, and she pleaded, “Don’t go, he’s here. I want you to meet him. Hey, Rodney, this is my friend Cheryl.” I looked up to see a tall, handsome man in a three-piece suit and tie. His dark, slicked-back, perfectly groomed

hair and beard framed deep-set welcoming green eyes, “Hi, call me Rod, it rhymes with God.” I slowly eased my tongue-tied, bell-bottomed self back on the sofa and squeaked out, “Oh, okay, I guess I can stay a little longer.” And that’s how I met my future husband—no convent for me. Five days after our thirty-seventh anniversary in January 2016, Rod died in a tragic accident. My college friend, my sister died 18 months later. Gone but not forgotten. Love never dies. Many of us are living beyond the passing of our loved ones. We can’t live in the past, but memories of the early days can bring comfort. Sharing memories of love and loss can keep our loved ones alive in our hearts. Finding our way beyond loss can be challenging, but as we love ourselves through the process, we open our hearts to the present. I hope your heart is filled to the brim this month as you find ways to share your love with others. Loving ourselves is a big part of our healthy living for the soul. My search for love has evolved throughout my life. As a young woman, the word love evoked thoughts of a strapping rescuer who would fill my heart with romance. In marriage, love has come to mean companionship and a deep knowing you can't get with anyone other than the person who is present for all of your very best and very worst moments. When children came along, the feeling of love became all-encompassing and sometimes overwhelming. I suspect as I age, the way I think of love will evolve even further to include the grieflove I'll feel when my parents pass away and the deep friendships that I'll develop when my kids fly the nest. With each passing year, as different people come into our lives and loved ones pass away, the evolution of our love occurs in tandem with an evolution of our hearts. Our culture simplifies love down to its least impressive parts. That first, almost obsessive, romantic love that knocks us off our feet is nothing compared to the deep love you develop with a friend or partner over decades. The gifts of jewelry, flowers, and heart-shaped boxes of chocolates could never compare to the gift of companionship, someone to hold your hand through the hard times and celebrate with you in your victories. Love, I believe, is given a bad rap. We see it as something that we should seek around any corner when real love is something that we grow inside ourselves. It's not always thrilling, but it's almost always satisfying. This understanding of love is something we need to experience to know. The most genuine, most profound love experiences have to be absorbed, and sometimes it takes a degree of wisdom to understand them. Love is built on the trust of oneself, as much as it is on the trust you develop in others. Real transformative love is one of the central elements of our well-being. Caring for and being cared for gives us a sense of belonging, creates meaning in our lives, and makes us feel purposeful. And as much as relationships create emotional well-being, they also benefit our physical wellness. I can think of characters in movies, books, and television who put all their focus and energy into 16

Aging Times Magazine | February 2022

work, corporate success, and money, and at the end of the story, one of two things have happened. Either they see the light and begin investing more time and energy into relationships and less into work, or they never heal, and it causes them to suffer. Maybe they have a heart attack, or they wallow in anger and depression, but either way, they never get the happy ending. It's a well-worn trope because we've all experienced it in our own lives. Not to say that people who have professional success or make a lot of money can't be happy. But, without relationships, without love, success alone is rarely worth it. Knowing all of this, it's interesting that the heart is the organ we use to symbolize our experience of love. Why not the stomach or the spleen? I believe it's because the heart is the organ that every other part of our body depends on. Our brains are essential, and even they rely on the oxygen the heart delivers. Just like our bodies require the heart to function, our spirits depend on love, relationships, and connection to feel a sense of well-being. This month we celebrate Valentine's Day, a day that honors love with all the pink and red hearts and sweet confections that a person can stand; it's also

American Heart Month. A month where we think about and practice increasing our cardiovascular health. There are myriad diet and lifestyle-related tips and tricks we can use to improve our physical wellness, but what do you know about the ways that relationships can make your ticker better?

Relationships Create A Sense of Meaning

Imagine you lived in a cabin in the woods with no one around. That might sound ideal to some, and it probably would be pretty nice for a while, but living in isolation (in the woods or even in our communities) causes us to lose track of the point of our lives. We don't have jobs to contribute to, relationships to nurture, or events to look forward to. After a while, it would be difficult to convince a person in isolation that there was merit in doing anything other than watching Netflix and eating ice cream. What would be the point? Unfortunately, something similar (while less dramatic sounding) happens to people all the time, especially as they age, retire from jobs, and lose spouses and friends. Without these foundational relationships, people are bound to lose interest in life and the positive habits that make their lives healthy.

Happy Relationships Reduce Stress

Not all relationships have the beneficial properties that make your life and heart happy and healthy.

We all have people in our lives who drain our energy, cause us stress, or even make us angry. The more time you spend in those relationships, or the more access you give those people to yourself, the more physical stress you may be putting on your cardiovascular system. Conversely, the more time you spend in happy relationships with people who bring you joy and reduce your stress, the more likely you are to reduce your level of stress. Why is stress so important? When we feel stressed, there is a physiological response in our bodies. You can feel the tension rise, perhaps your face gets hot, and your heart begins to thump. These stress reactions raise your blood pressure, and from time to time, that isn't a terrible thing. However, if you're constantly in this state of stress, your raised blood pressure is putting stress on your entire cardiovascular system, which, over time, can cause lasting damage. Minimizing your stress response is crucial to maintaining a healthy heart.

Healthy Relationships Encourage Growth

Recently I heard a saying which states that we are each a reflection of the people we spend the most time with. If I were to spend all my time with people who love staying up late drinking at bars, it would be very likely that I would begin to mimic that behavior, or I would get new friends. On the other hand, when I spend my time with people who share my interest in living a healthy and peaceful life, they encourage my growth. You will find it much easier to prioritize your heart health, eat a healthy diet, and get more exercise when you cultivate relationships with people who actively seek those same things. The people you spend your time with imprint themselves on your life. Likewise, when you invest in your well-being, you lead by example and pave the way for your partner, friends, children, and grandchildren. During this month, as we celebrate love and hearts, both chocolate-filled and bloodpumping, take stock of the people in your life and the love that keeps you going. The ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said, "being deeply loved by someone gives you strength while loving someone deeply gives you courage." May you feel the strength and courage that comes from deep and meaningful relationships, and may you allow it to bring healing and well-being to your heart in every sense of the word. MENTAL HEALTH MOMENT

LIFE AFTER LOST LOVE When seniors lose a spouse or mate after a lifetime of memories and precious times spent together, the emotions can be devastating. If one spouse was the caregiver for the other, the grief could be compounded by the feeling of loss of purpose. On a cognitive level, the sense of worth can decline. “Why am I still here? What is my purpose?” Family members and friends can play a critical role in helping to restore these feelings by reaching out and making deliberate attempts to include the mom/dad or loved one who has experienced loss in their lives in their activities. Even if it is something as simple as a weekly dinner together or taking a walk outside together, enjoying ice cream, and sitting and talking. Connection is key. Harvard Health states, “People suffering from major depression tend to be isolated and feel disconnected from others and may shun such support and assistance. People who don’t get such support or avoid it may be at greater risk of slipping into clinical depression during the grieving process.” There is light at the end of the tunnel, however. Social interaction can ‘bring people back to life.’ Oftentimes, renewed interests can spark a new outlook on life. Music, dance, gardening – whatever someone’s interests 18

may have been even decades ago can foster regrowth. It really is a chance to rediscover who they were apart from their spouse. In an elderly generation (75+), many women who may have been devoted wives and mothers can explore their interests before marriage and children. Making new friends for seniors who have lost a loved one is a powerful way to bond and connect with others and provide a new sense of purpose. Senior centers, bereavement groups, and family friends can be essential lifelines in establishing new connections. You Are Not Alone! So many are experiencing loss right now. The silver lining can be the opportunity to connect with others whose paths may be similar to yours. You can contact GriefShare at (800) 395-5755 to connect with people who are grieving with one another. Visit their website https://www.griefshare.org/ to find or start local groups or meetings. WE MUSTACHE YOU A QUESTION ??

If the last two years have proven anything, it’s that we are all stronger and more resilient than we thought. But, if we’re honest, the difficulty of everyday life didn’t start when the pandemic started. Life has always been busy and hectic, and that busyness is one of the main culprits that keep us from living the healthy lives that we all imagine for ourselves. It’s easy to get caught up in and overwhelmed with the exhaustive list of things you need to do to improve your heart health: diet, exercise, stress reduction, medication, and the list goes on and on. But, we think there’s one thing you can do today that will bring enjoyment to your life while also contributing to your heart health and all it takes is your two feet and some time. For those who are able, going for a walk is the easiest and most inexpensive way to improve your health. It doesn’t require a membership, special equipment, or any skill. You don’t have to do it as a team and you can walk when and wherever feels right to you. As long as you’re getting out of your house every day and putting one foot in front of the other, you’re doing something great for your health. Walking is a low-impact form of exercise that is known to be very good for your physical health. It’s also a habit that compounds, meaning you might feel comfortable walking twice around your block today, but if you do that every day for a month it’s likely that you’ll be able to increase your mileage with no more expense of time. Going for a walk is a great way to lift your mood and improve your mental well-being. If you live in a climate

VACATION SPOTLIGHT

TREAT YOUR SWEETIE TO

CHOCOLATES AND TRAVEL Oh, Valentine’s Day. Though it’s so early in the year, it always seems to sneak up on us until it’s right there. How many of you have found yourself in the position where you wait until the day before to buy a gift, and find that you’ll be lucky to grab them a box of chocolates and a cheesy stuffed animal on your way home? We can do better. Let’s be prepared this year. Of course, never forget the chocolates (or other favorite sweet treat, no judgment on the chocolate haters), but after everything we’ve all been through over the last couple years, it’s the perfect time to take that trip, getaway, journey, or vacation you and your special someone have had to put on hold. You deserve to get away, go somewhere special, just you two. Know you want to go somewhere, but not sure about the destination? Want to take that extra step and do something different that will really knock their socks off? Here are our top ideas.

Tulip Time River Cruise

Sure, you could buy your partner some flowers from the store (and you should still do that, *wink wink*), but why not head to the Netherlands for an amazing experience as well as some beautiful tulips? The Netherlands is famous for their colorful fields of springtime tulips that typically bloom between March and May.

And the best part of going on a Netherlands river cruise when it just so happens to be tulip blooming season is you get all the beauty and wonder of the blooming flowers while also getting to explore an amazing country. Great food, scenery with windmills, loads of history and architecture—it’s a trip that truly has something for everyone.

Discover the Secrets of Egypt

Nothing says, “WOW!” like a once in a lifetime kind of journey. If you’re looking for something to make your partner speechless, we’d recommend going with something they’d either never expect, or that they’ve only ever dreamed of. There’s no time like the present to make those dreams come true. And we happen to know that a trip to Egypt has just that effect.

HOW TO PLAY SUDOKU The goal of Sudoku is to fill in a 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, row, and 3x3 section contain the numbers between 1 to 9. At the beginning of the game, the 9x9 grid will have some of the squares filled in. Your job is to use logic to fill in the missing digits and complete the grid. Don’t forget, a move is incorrect if: • Any row contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 • Any column contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 • Any 3x3 grid contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9

1. Preheat oven to 375°. In a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat, heat oil. Season chicken generously with salt and pepper and sear, skin-side down, until golden, 4 to 5 minutes per side. Transfer chicken to a plate and pour off half the fat from skillet. 2. Return skillet to medium heat and add garlic, thyme, and red pepper flakes. Cook until fragrant, 1 minute, then stir in broth, heavy cream, sun-dried tomatoes, and Parmesan and season with more salt. Bring to a simmer, then return chicken to skillet, skin-side up. 3. Transfer skillet to oven and bake until chicken is cooked through (and juices run clear when chicken is pierced with a knife), 17 to 20 minutes.
