WOW what an exciting time to be in the beef industry. All of the producers that have kept going through thick and thin because they like and enjoy raising cattle and working 24/7 are finally getting a good return for their endless hours of commitment to the beef industry.
Welcome to the 35th Northern Progress Bull Sale. It seems like a lifetime has passed since the 1st Northern Progress Sale at North Battleford Heartland in 1991 and I guess that is because that is exactly what it has been. We have very many good memories of raising and selling the very best Red Angus bulls that we could produce at the time. We have always bred for calving ease and consistency with very good performance and muscling to follow. This year our bulls look as good or better than any we have ever raised. They have been fed in a responsible way to grow the frame of the bull first then put some finishing on them to show their full potential by sale time.
This year we have 30 aged bulls that can be counted on to breed more animals each in the bigger pastures or on exotic females as well as 35 yearling bulls that are very athletic and will breed very well in a little more limited role. These bulls will be semen checked and available for you to purchase on April 4, 2025 the first Friday in April.
As always we are willing to keep the bulls here at our farm after the sale and deliver them to their new homes when needed or when you are ready for them. We strongly recommend that bulls staying at our farm after the sale be Insured by the new owner.
Again the Northern Progress Bull sale will take place on our farm as a video auction and the bulls will be displayed in smaller groups on sale day. We encourage people that can not attend sale day to come look at the bulls anytime before the sale or phone to ask any questions so that we can honestly help you with your bull selection.
There are a lot of ways to purchase a red angus bull from our sale. We like people to attend the sale if possible to buy themselves and enjoy the day with us and have our beef on a bun lunch and a visit with hospitality. But if you can not attend you can watch the sale and bid online with DLMS . Or on the phone with our very good sales staff or ourselves or you can leave buying orders by talking to myself Robert and/or Jarett or one of our sales staff. It is indeed a pleasure to welcome you to the 35 th Annual Northern Progress Bull Sale. Robert Laycock and family are happy to offer you an outstanding set of Red Angus Bulls, both yearlings fall born long yearlings and 2-year-old bulls. Bulls that have been grown responsibly, not force fed but fed to express their ability to convert a high roughage TMR ration into pounds of red meat. The fall born yearlings and 2-year bulls were held over specifically to compliment the yearling bulls on offer. They will cover more cows and work great in larger pastures. There are definitely some Purebred Herd Sire prospects in the offering this year. Robert focuses on calving ease but looking through the pens, you will see that the bulls might be calving ease but still carry the style, thickness and size to compete in all categories. RSL has a long-standing philosophy in mind when selecting herd sires to compliment his cow herd. Low birth weights but not sacrificing quality. Bulls from this program have worked well in a lot of breeding operation’s, both Purebred and commercial.

The bull calves and their mothers were grazed on seeded cover crops which turned out very well this year. They were weaned on October 6th and fed cover crop silage and chopped hay and straw along with grass hay bales free choice. The two year old bulls in our program are picked for twos as calves and pastured separately and weaned later, then back grounded on polycrop silage and chopped hay along with grass hay bales. Then they go to grass from June to October 1st and come home to be fed similar to the yearlings. These bulls may not be the biggest red angus 2 year olds but the quality is as good as any and they are fed to last a long time. The majority of these aged bulls have been kept for their calving ease and their ability to breed more heifers or cows and still hold their condition and breeding ability to become excellent herd bulls for many years.

Long Yearling Bulls | Lot 58-65
At RSL Red Angus we have had a fall calving program for over 30 years. We bought in heifers born in the fall from Corniers in St. Micheal, Alberta. These fall born bulls are older and more mature bulls that can breed more females than the yearlings and retain their condition throughout breeding season. All the Fall bulls are off of Golden Sunset SQ 80F and are super calving ease and quite similar. So buy with confidence. The Fall bulls are August-September born and spend the winter on their mothers and are weaned in April. They go to grass and are fed for the winter with the Two year olds. A person can’t compare weaning weights with other program because these bulls are on their mothers over the winter with no grass or creep.

BREEDER’S GUARANTEE: All animals sold are guaranteed breeders by the owner. Any animal that has not proven itself a breeder within six months after the date of sale, if in healthy condition, may be returned to the seller at the buyer’s expense. The seller reserves the privilege of trying for a period of six months to prove the animal a breeder. The seller at his option may either return the purchase price to the buyer or replace the animal with another of equal quality in full settlement of ALL claims. Yearling bulls shall be guaranteed breeders for no more than twenty-five females. All complaints regarding
breeding difficulties must be reported in writing by the buyer to the seller within the specified time above, and any animal returned must be free from disease and in good health.
