This is because apples, pears, and sweet persimmons, the representative fruits of Korea, appear in the market. Consumers start to fall into the happy thoughts of ‘which fruit to eat’. As the kitchen at home is filled with fruits, the Korean fruit trio is also reaching out to overseas consumers. As heroes leading the export of Korean fruits, they have captivated the taste buds of overseas consumers with their sweet taste, rich juice, and excellent texture. here is a famous British proverb, “An T apple a day keeps a doctor away.” This sentence confirms the efficacy of apples. Apples are a superfood rich in dietary fiber, antioxidants (anthocyanins, flavonoids, and polyphenols), as well as various nutrients (organic acids, pectin, and vitamin C). They are effective in preventing high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, stroke, etc. Korea’s export market for fresh apples is not large. Still, based on a positive analysis that the quality of sweet and sour Korean apples will build competitiveness, main production areas such as Chungju in Chungcheongbuk-do, Andong in Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Hongcheon in Gangwon-do are exporting apples more actively. Last year, 1,952 tons of Korean apples were exported, with Taiwan 759 tons, Vietnam 353 tons, Hong Kong 222 tons, Singapore 284 tons, and Malaysia 112 tons. Processed apple foods are exported in earnest as well. Apple juice is exported to Taiwan and Vietnam and, apple wine

to its excellent efficacy. Apple juice is consumed the most, and apple wine, apple cider vinegar, and apple chips are preferred products as well. Chusa Apple Wine in Yesan, Chungcheongnamdo is famous apple wine. It won the Grand Prize in the Fruit Wine Category of the Korean Wine Fair in 2015 and previously won the Bronze Medal in 2014 at Monde Selection, an international drink competition. In addition, main producers of apples are developing processed foods that can raise the added value of apples, such as traditional Korean apple sweets made with apple syrup from Cheongsong in Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Chungju apple sliced-jam that can be spread on bread like sliced-cheese.

n the classic Korean novel ‘The Love I Story of Chun-hyang’, Chun-hyang’s mother places a Cheongsil Pear while setting a table to a man who might be her son-in-law. This means that the pear was a rare fruit. Pears were cultivated as a major fruit and high-quality ones were selected and presented as a gift for the king. Such precious and traditional Korean pears are attracting attention from the world. Unlike Western pears, Korean pears have high water and high sugar content, and firm flesh. Based on these advantages, about 25,000 tons of Korean pears are steadily exported abroad. As of 2020, 23,590 tons of pears were exported, and the U.S. (42.6%), Taiwan (37.2%), and Vietnam (11.8%) accounted for 91.6% of export. Pears can be eaten without peeling their skins, just like apples. The functional ingredients contained in the peel are similar to the amount of ingredients contained in the flesh of 4 pears, and when eaten with the peel, the an-

which are regarded as premium items. Among 5,609 tons of sweet persimmon exports in 2020, Malaysia took up 2,252 tons, accounting for 40% of the total export volume, followed by 996 tons in the Philippines, 620 tons in Hong Kong, and 606 tons in Singapore.

he scientific name of persimmon is T ‘Diospyroskaki’. A combination of God (Dios), gift (Pyros), and persimmon (Kaki), it means ‘a gift from God’. “As suggested by the scientific name, persimmons are useful fruits for our body”, explained the Rural Development Administration of Korea. In particular, persimmons have an excellent antioxidant effect because they contain a large amount of functional phenolic compounds such as catechin, epicatechin, epigallocatechin, and gallic acid. Fall is the time for the largest shipment of sweet persimmons in Korea. The export period is from October to December, and ‘Buyu sweet persimmon’, which is very juicy and has high sugar content, is leading the export of sweet persimmons in Korea. The main export country is Malaysia. As most persimmons are replaced with imported ones in the Malaysian market, the advantage of Korean sweet persimmons is price competitiveness. Because they are cheaper than Japanese or Spanish products,

hine Muscat is a seedless grape that can S be eaten without peeling the skin. It is also called ‘Mango Grape’ because of its high sugar content and mango taste. Shine Muscat nearly introduced a whole new world in the grape market that was centered on Campbell Early. Korea after Korea-Chile FTA, Japan’s Shine Muscat captured GFAC President Kim Hyung-soo’s eyes. He was highly convinced that seedless green grapes with high sugar content and musky flavor would set a new milestone in the Korean grape industry. Although its cultivation is difficult, he was also confident with the ability to produce Shine Muscat comparable to that of Japan with Korea’s technological power. With its harmony of sweet taste and subtle scent, Shine Muscat drew consumer interest and could be successfully exported. GFAC introduced first Shine Muscat to the overseas market in 2015. After the first export to Thailand, in 2016, it increased its export markets to Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, and Canada. Exports have also been increasing every year, from 35 tons in 2016, 70 tons in 2017, 115 tons in 2018, 226 tons in 2019, and 330 tons in 2020. China was at the center of this trend. Only High-quality Survives GFAC could be successful in the Chinese market mainly because of its high-quality. GFAC is producing high-quality premium Shine Muscat through strict quality control. To prevent grapes from growing too much and reducing the sugar content, GFAC applied a cultivation method of thinning out grapes enough to avoid over-fruiting or to make the size of the grapes uniform. The Korea Agri-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT) has set out to solve the struggles of Korean exporters facing limited market activities of development, such as face-to-face overseas market tests, due to COVID-19. A main example is ‘K-Foodies’, a Korean agricultural products evaluation group for foreigners residing in Korea that held an inauguration ceremony in July. K-Foodies is a combination of Korean ‘K’ and ‘Foodies’, meaning epicures who love Korean food. 150 members in total were chosen from 7 countries, and among them, <Korea Agrafood> met Grace Marie Casley from Australia to hear about how she thinks about the competitiveness of Korean agricultural products abroad.

Could you introduce yourself briefly?

Q

I am Grace Marie Casley from Australia. It has been 5 years since I came to Korea. I moved here to pursue a master’s degree in Political Science and International Relations, and after finishing my studies, I have been working as a freelance copywriter.

Q

I am particularly impressed by fruits and vegetables that can only be eaten in Korea. Among them, my favorite fruit is pears. I felt that Korean pears were amazing because they have a crunchy texture, unlike western pears. I personally like this flavor. Also, the Chamoe (Korean melon) was amazing. It was a fruit I had never seen in Australia or other countries, and it was in Korea that I ate it for the first time. The Chamoe is one of the must-try Korean fruits. Among Korean vegetables, I like Namul (greens). Each herb has its own unique taste and goes well with many foods. That’s why I like Korean Namul.

You have been selected as a member of K-Foodies. Can you talk about how you feel and your plans for future activities? Since I was selected as a K-Foodies member in July this year, I have engaged in three activities so far. Specifically, when a Korean food export company sends me a product, I taste it and give them feedback on tips to succeed abroad. Among them, what comes to mind is banana soymilk. I heard that it was developed for people who can’t drink milk, and it was so delicious that I was very amazed. The next thing I remember is soy sauce and Gochujang. I was always very interested in fermented food before, but in Australia, I had never tasted soy sauce that was as elaborate as Korean products. As a result, I was very impressed with the product I saw in person because it felt very highclass, and I could sense that a lot of effort and devotion were put into the product. As a member of K-Foodies, I plan to actively promote Korean agricultural products around me while directly experiencing Korean agricultural products. While I will share that they are delicious, I also plan on telling others how to eat them.

What is your favorite Korean agricultural products and why?

What do you think is the competitiveness of Korean agricultural products?

I think the biggest competitiveness of Korean agricultural products is genuine care and Korean culture. For example, Korean gochujang and soy sauce are fermented with great care, and pears, which I like personally, are carefully produced by farmers. Such genuine care will impress consumers and allow them to feel Korean culture. Likewise, if the most Korean thing is known to overseas consumers, Korean agricultural products will be more competitive than it is now.

Jeju-do for Satsuma, and Satsuma for Jeju-do Jeju-do (island) is the main production site of Korean satsuma. In Jeju-do, the satsumas in full bloom among the basalt rocks can be easily seen. Satsumas look like oranges, but in fact, they are all different if looked closely at the size, taste, and peel. While a satsuma has a size that is easy to carry and eat and shines from the peel, an orange is larger and has a thicker skin. Oranges also taste sweet, but satsumas are sour. Thanks to this, satsumas are often made into processed products, and chocolate and satsumas chips with kernels and peels cut into flats and dried are very popular. In fact, satsumas have become such special products that any visitor to Jeju-do always buy satsuma chocolate, chips, and tea. Besides satsumas, Hallabong is famous for its large size and sour taste, and Cheonhyehyang is gaining popularity recently with its sweet taste and thin skin.

Main Ingredients: 600g of pork, 1 onion, 1/3 carrot, 1 green onion, 1 tbsp minced garlic

Gunsan’s tourism concept is ‘time travel’. Each year, it holds a festival to look around the time travel village under the theme of ‘Time travel from modernity to the past and the future’. Showing Gunsan’s history from the 1900s to the 1990s, this time travel village has about 10 different buildings for each period. These include: the Gunsan Modern History Museum, Chowon Photo Gallery. Gunsan is a maritime city. You can meet the sea of Gunsan at the Gogunsan Gundo group of islands, an island cluster consisting of 16 inhabited islands and 47 uninhabited islands. Once an island where you could see the scenery of Gogunsan Gundo at a glance, Sinsido island is a famous tourist attraction with the world’s longest seawall of 33.9km built recently. Gunsan has pretty photo zones all over. One of them is Gyeongamdong railroad village, which is near the 2.5km-long railway connecting Gunsan Paper Korea Factory and Gunsan Station. Now it is a good photo spot for a memorable trip, as it is decorated with the vibe and atmosphere of the 1980s. The railroad village was also the filming location.

Jjambbong

The food that immediately comes to mind when you think of Gunsan is Jjambbong (Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup). Its ancestor is chaomamian sold by overseas Chinese, who added red chili powder to the noodles to make what is now Jjambbong today. Overseas Chinese were banned from owning farmland after the enactment of the Foreign Land Act in 1961, and Gunsan Jjambbong became popular as they opened Chinese restaurants. There are more than 100 kinds of Jjambbong because Gunsan is where the sea and land meet and has abundant agricultural and marine products. Currently, Jjambbong Street is established in Jangmi-dong, Gunsan. Jjambbong is an important asset of Gunsan, generating an annual economic revenue effect of KRW 30 billion. After you eat Jjambbong, it’s dessert time. In Gunsan, sweet red bean bread is famous for dessert. Gunsan’s sweet red bean bread is made with Hinchalssal barely, its specialty product, so it has a thinner skin and is more sticky than ordinary bread. There are always very long lines of people to buy the Gunsan sweet red bean bread at Lee Sung Dang, the oldest bakery in Korea.

The special product that goes into both ‘Jjambbong ramyeon’ as well as sweet red bean bread is Hinchalssal barely. Since it can be used to make traditional foods such as gochujang, it is also called ‘glutinous rice of barley’. Since Hinchalssal barely is easy to mix with rice without a separate soaking process and contains 7 times higher soluble fiber than that of regular rice and 3.7 times higher than wheat, it is popular among consumers who are highly interested in health food. Kokoma Cabbage is also a key agricultural product of Gunsan that is emerging in popularity recently. Gunsan has been cultivating this item as a new income crop since 2018. Kokoma Cabbage is smaller than regular cabbage and has a crunchy texture with a high sugar content, so it has been exported to Japan and Taiwan since the first year of harvest. Kokoma Cabbage is the hero that has helped Gunsan, which was once doing poorly in agricultural product exports, establish as the main production area for horticultural products.
