A K-Food Fair event will be hosted on July 26 and 27 in Tokyo, Japan. It is expected to give momentum for the expansion of exports of Korean agriproducts to the Japanese market. The pictures are from the Korean pavilion of the FOODEX JAPAN 2017 exhibition held last March.

For example, in the first five months of this year, Korea exported to Japan US$ 512.7 million worth of food and agricultural products, which equals 18.9% of Korea’s total export amount during that period and is Korea’s largest export to a single country. Recognizing the importance of Japan as a market for Korean food exports, MAFRA (the Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs) and aT (Korea Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation) are hosting the 2017 Global K-Food Fair in Tokyo at the Grand Prince HotelTakanawa on July 26 and 27. The bellwether of this year’s K-Food Fairs, the 2017 K-Food Fair in Tokyo will include various events such as export consultations, seminars, and exhibitions of products. During the export consultations, fifty Korean exporters will engage in one-to-one negotiations with about 200 representatives of Japanese distributors, vendors, importers, and regional buyers. It is anticipated that the consultations will help many Korean companies to make a breakthrough in the Japanese market. Fourteen products presentations will be hosted for Japanese buyers and distributors to enhance their understanding of Korean farm products. A seminar on such issues as export quarantine and customs clearance is expected to draw much attention from participating companies. Another seminar will deal with Japanese consumer trends and suggest measures to increase exports of Korean food to Japan. Meanwhile, the participating Korean exporters will do their best to attract publicity by introducing promising Korean products that reflect the latest Japanese food trends such as the Japanese consumers’ interest in health, premium food, and convenience products.

The K-Food Fair will exhibit Korea’s leading health products including ginseng. (which broke into the Japanese market with its fresh perilla seed oil) and Jeilseed Co., Ltd. (which is famous for danjo pepper―a type of chili pepper lowering blood sugar) are going to promote fresh perilla seed oil, chili pepper, and chili pepper paste. Setting its sights on the Japanese market where home meal replacement (HMR) is becoming increasingly popular as a result of a large number of single-person households, Daeseong F&D will demonstrate its easy-to-cook rice noodles and buckwheat noodles, while Wonil Food will display various sauces designed for rice dishes. Visitors to the fair will encounter many Korean fresh farm products. Evergood Corporation will explore the possibilities of exporting fresh fruit―such as pear, apple, and grapefruit―and forests products―such as chestnut. K-mush and H&P International will try to increase their sales of enokitake (winter mushroom). Other companies will exhibit extremely spicy stir-fried instant noodles, which are very popular in Southeast Asia, beverages (including citron tea and aloe juice), and Korean dishes such as tteokbokki (spicy stirfried rice cake) and samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup).

In recent years, Buldak-bokkeum-myeon (stir-fried noodles with spicy chicken), which is extremely spicy, has been a sensation in the instant noodle market of China and ASEAN. If you search for Buldak-bokkeum-myeon on video-sharing sites, you can find a great number of clips showing people trying Buldakbokkeum-myeon. They show some eaters taking the challenge shouting “Cheers!” and others making funny expressions as they suffer under the power of capsaicin. The popularity of Buldak-bokkeum-myeon spread from online channels to offline stores. In large supermarkets of Jakarta (Indonesia), and other cities of Southeast Asia and China, there are sections exclusively selling Buldak-bokkeum-myeon. Special events such as “Speedy Eating of Buldak-bokkeum-myeon” contests are organized and a public broadcasting station of Jakarta made them into a regularly aired program. Even among Koreans―who generally enjoy spicy food― Buldak-bokkeum-myeon is considered super-hot, so several ways to enjoy it in a less spicy way have been introduced on websites. The most typical one is to add cheese as it reduces the spiciness and doubles the sweet taste. Any kind of cheese can be used as the topping―from sliced and string cheese to pizza cheese. A popular recipe is to put chopped string cheese on the noodles and wait until it melts in a microwave. Butter, instead of cheese, will also make the noodles taste sweeter. As the name of the product (translated as “potato noodles”) implies, Gamjamyeon noodles are made with potato (over 50%) and are both chewy and soft in texture. Black pepper adds spiciness to the soup. The Japanese people praise the product for the harmony of chewy noodles and an unusual spiciness coming from black pepper powder. According to a 2017 report by the World Instant Noodles Association (WINA), Koreans consumed 76 units of ramyeon on average in 2016, which is the highest rate in the world. Vietnam came in second with 55 packages per person, followed by Indonesia (52.8 units).

The export volume has been steadily increasing, reaching US$ 290 million last year. The export volume was US$213 million in 2013, US$280 million in 2014, and US$219 million in 2015. The export markets have also become more diverse. Korean ramyeon is now sold in over a hundred different countries, with China, the US, Japan, and ASEAN being the leading importers. You can have Korean instant noodles at the “end of the world” in Punta Areana, Chile, and at the “roof of Europe” in Jungfrau in the Alps.

Ramyeon tops the list of foods foreigners want to bring home from Korea One travel agency conducted a survey, asking foreign tourists in Korea what food they would want to take home with them at the end of their travels in Korea. Over 40% of the respondents answered “ramyeon.” (Other popular choices included seaweed (20%), chicken and beer (17%), bulgogi (Korean-style barbequed beef, 15%), and kimchi (8%).) Among various products exhibited at the conference, dried fruit and vegetable chips were the most popular. Bugak, a traditional Korean snack similar to dried chips, also attracted great interest from buyers. Also favorable was the buyers’ response to seonsik (grain powder) and cereal bars, both of which can be used as a meal substitute. All these products are similar in that they are good not only for vegetarians but also for general consumers interested in a healthy diet. Other vegetarian food products such as a bibimbap-burger (without meat or eggs), vegan dumplings, soy “meat,” and vegetarian cookies were also on display and well-received by buyers.

Rice Crackers: Rice is a gluten-free food rich in proteins, vitamins, and dietary fiber. As a vegetarian myself, I was especially interested in seonsik which can be used as a light substitute for meals. uly in Korea is the time of extreme summer heat. With the rise of outside temperatures, the sales of food products that can help beat the heat also increase. With its abundant water content and sweetness, watermelon is the best fruit to overcome heat and thirst. In Korea, watermelons are harvested from May to August in Buyeo and Nonsan counties of South Chungcheong Province and Jeongeup of North Jeolla Province. Local farmers make great effort to produce high-quality fruit by improving cultivated varieties and using top-notch sorters and packaging lines. As a reflection of their efforts, the export volume is consistently growing. One of the improved varieties is watermelon without seeds, which makes it very easy to eat the fruit.

A Luxurious Watermelon Produced by Experts The seedless watermelon is produced by cultivating the fruit so it does not develop seeds during the growing stage. The convenience of having no need to remove seeds when eating has made seedless watermelons very popular. An increasing number of Korean farmers produce and export the variety overseas. One of the exporters is Jeongeup Watermelon Research and Farming Association located in Jeongeup. The association was established in 2003 by 75 farms for the purpose of growing and distributing high quality watermelons. From the very beginning, it focused on the production of seedless watermelons. Association President Lee Seok-byeon said, “At that time, the watermelon production nationwide was increasing due to improvements in cultivation technology, and we thought it was difficult to attract the consumer with a common watermelon. We analyzed the consumer trends and decided to grow seedless watermelons, which are not only sweet but also convenient to eat.” In the early stages, however, the association was unable to produce watermelons of exportable quality. No system was in place to grow seedless watermelons, and the fruits were often damaged or spoiled during cultivation. Moreover, even those watermelons that reached the harvesting stage were hard to sell on the market because their rinds were too thick and the sweetness too low. RDA helped organize a trial shipment to Japan and the association’s seedless watermelons received positive evaluations, opening the door to regular exports. The key to the success lay in quality. Gyeonggido Agricultural Research & Extension Services is also setting up a long-term plan for expanding the production base of kalanchoe and thereby securing a stable supply of the plant for export.

Five Shipments, 7,000 Plants in Total, to Reach Japan by October On April 7, 1,200 plants of the Red One and Pink Star varieties were shipped to Tokyo. It was a test shipment to check the reaction from the Japanese flower market. A minimum of 7,000 plants in five shipments are going to be exported to the country

by October. Gyeonggido Agricultural Research & Extension Services has finished transferring the sales rights to flower farmers in Gyeonggi Province and is striving to increase the sales of Korean kalanchoe in Japan. Research Scientist, Lee explains, “We ventured out with Pink One in Japan last October, and this year, we are targeting the Japanese market with Korean varieties, Red One and Pink Star. I hope that the new, homegrown varieties of kalanchoe gain huge popularity in Japan and greatly increase farmers’ incomes.”

Peace Village exported its products for the first time in August 2016 with the shipment of US$3,000 worth of ham and sausages to Hong Kong. Through this and subsequent shipments in April and May 2017, the company has been gradually increasing its export volume. Hong Kong consumers appreciate the taste, nutrition and safety of the products. Nowadays, sales of Peace Village products are rapidly increasing via Hong Kong home shopping channels and online malls where they are advertised as highly nutritious, delicious, and made from eco-friendly ingredients.
