Tomato, which is used as a food ingredient in various dishes such as pasta and sandwiches, is a healthy vegetable that is selected as one of the world’s top 10 superfoods. Lycopene, especially in tomatoes, is known as one of the most effective antioxidants. In fact, frequent tomato consumption may lower the risk of prostate cancer. As tomato calories are only 20kcal per 100g, it is often adopted in healthy-eating plan as well as for diabetes diet. The smart farms and greenhouses in Korea produce about 400,000 tons of tomatoes every year. Because of the hard pulp and high storability, the Korean tomatoes are much admired in the overseas.

Fell in Love with the Sweetness of

Incredibly Mouth-Watering Grapes Produced in Korea

In the grape producing regions of Korea, it is full of fresh and sweet aroma of grapes. This is because grape harvesting is usually concentrated between July and September. The most typical varieties produced in Korea are Campbell Early, Kyoho, and Shine Muscat, which continues to be exported to other countries. In recent years, Korean wines have also been internationally acclaimed, which was possible thanks to the strict selection of product by farmers, training on quality improvement, and systematic cultivation techniques. Let us now explore the world of delicious Korean grapes!

The grapes are the sweetest at the top and gradually taste sour toward the bottom. Try the bottom ones when you are looking for good grapes.

The Campbell Early accounts for 60% of the grapes grown in Korea. The annual production is about 210,000 tons with dedicated farming area of 13,000 ha. Unlike foreign grapes which are sweet in general, the Korean Campbell Early allows to experience both sweet and sour flavor at the same time, which is the reason why it is sought after in the overseas market. In addition, this grape is juicy and the skin is easily separated, thus consumed as fresh fruit. The fact that the Campbell Early is rich in vitamins and sugar makes an effective solution for skin care and fatigue recovery. Moreover, the high content of potassium promotes sodium excretion and helps control blood pressure. The polyphenols in purple grape skin and seeds also prevent cancer and aging by removing harmful substances that accumulate in the body.


Shine Muscat a Loyal Steady Seller of Export Additional Info It is recommended to keep the grapes at room temperature for 2-3 days to taste even more delicious Shine Muscat. The sugar content heightens as it is left to ripen at room temperature after picking. For long term storage, wrap it in a kitchen towel and place it in the refrigerator.

The Shine Muscat has yellow-green color unlike purplish Campbell Early and Kyoho, and has a thick and crisp texture. This grape carries a strong grape aroma and is also called as ‘mango grapes’ as it is distinguished by its unique taste of mango flavor when chewed. As it is well known for its high sweetness, the average sugar content reaches 18 to 20 Brix. Although the export price of this variety is about three times higher than that of Kyoho, it can be stored for up to three months at a low temperature and is popular both at home and abroad thanks to its sweet taste. In recent years, the Shine Muscat has been leading the export of Korean grapes through meticulous management of cultivation technology and strict selection process of export volume. The representative cultivation regions of Shine Muscat in Korea include Sangju and Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

Kyoho the King of Grapes Additional Info When you wash Kyoho, sprinkle a pinch of flour lightly and rinse it after 10 minutes. Then, the harmful residues are removed and washed together so that you can eat them cleanly and safely.

With a definition of gigantic peak, ‘Kyoho’ is characterized by large grapes with only one seed inside. This type of grape is regarded as the essence of grapes in Japan owing to its sugar content of 18 Brix and its exceptional flavor. The top quality Kyoho grapes are as large as a small plum with thick but soft skin and sweet flesh. A wealth of nutrients such as minerals, vitamins, calcium, potassium, and iron are contained in Kyoho, which is usually eaten fresh and also used for wines and salad. Above all, this grape is one of the best fruits when it’s presented with meaty dishes, plus a great dessert when served cold peeled without any decoration. A fresh Kyoho should be tightly spaced between the grapes and not separated. Falling grapes when picked up by hand are definitely not fresh which has been left long after the harvest.


Immerse Yourself in the Charm of

Korean Wine!

If you want to try out Korean wines, it is recommended to visit Gwangmyeong Cave located in Gyeonggi-do. In the past, this cave was used for mining gold and silver which has surpassed 5 million visitors after 4 years of opening with an admission fee, making it one of the major tourist attractions in the metropolitan area. Starting with the Seoul Arts Center, many artworks are exhibited in collaboration with numerous artists inside the cave, where light decorations and new media in the dark backgrounds bring something beyond imagination. Although the tunnel was considered as a mere industrial site before transforming itself into a wine cave, there are now more than 170 kinds of Korean wines sold nationwide which is the one and only place where all local wines are gathered and sold. Gwangmyeong Cave is filled with interesting stories related to wine, including the history, the country of origin, glass and festivals, manufacturing process, and labels. The visitors can also taste and purchase excellent quality of domestic wines made from grapes and other specialty fruits across the country. The Korean wine sold in Gwangmyeong Cave has reached the record of 43,000 bottles (10% of Korean wine sales per year) in 2016 alone.

ince the first export of premium grape Shine Muscat to Thailand in 2015, GOSAN Farming Association Corporation is enjoying the high trust from overseas buyers. This is because only selected optimum products are exported and grapes with high sugar content are produced with strict cultivation technology. The top quality Shine Muscat is drawing more attention as exports are expanded to the world market.

Pioneering export with high quality grape production GOSAN Farming Association Corporation has exported 108 tons of Shine Muscat in 2018. Since its first

export to Thailand in 2015, the company has expanded its exports to Vietnam, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore in 2016. In the following year, the company has started exporting to China, and established itself as the world’s first-rate Shine Muscat export corporation. The 75 grape farmers participating in GOSAN Farming Association Corporation export the whole quantity of harvested Shine Muscat abroad. In 2017, a box of 3 clusters of Shine Muscat was sold at a high price of 80,000 won in China’s luxurious department store which was out of stock in a week after it became popular with local consumers. Most of all,


the taste is superior to Japanese Shine Muscat while the price is relatively low, so the export volume continues to grow. The Shine Muscat varieties were imported from Japan in 2013, and differentiated cultivation techniques were spread throughout the country; nonetheless, Gosan’s cultivation expertise remained overwhelming. The grapes were rather light in weight but could maintain the high sugar content of more than 18 Brix on average with meticulous management of cultivation techniques. A strict export quality control also contributed to the expansion of exports by removing grapes with low commercial value or low sugar content from selection process.

Strict export control for exporting above 18 Brix Gosan’s export method adheres to the high quality high price strategy. The price is lower than the Japanese products yet the quality is similar or superior. In addition, the export products are carefully selected concerning the sugar content and color, and its outstanding cultivation technology is also expected to overtake Japan in the near future. At present, the overseas consumers prefer large clusters but are likely to turn to smaller ones in the long term, and the corporation already possesses the cultivation technology to produce such grapes for export. As the overseas buyers are increasing their purchases, cultivation area has been expanded to more than twice the size compared to last year; however, the orders still re-

main high to keep up with demand. In the long term, the exports are likely to be expanded further to China and the Southeast Asia, as well as the American and Australian market will be developed to achieve the export of USD 10 million within 5 years following the export of 200 tons this year. Kim Hyung-su, CEO of the GOSAN Farming Association Corporation, said, “Since the excellence of Shine Muscat became widely known, many Thai and Chinese buyers have shown a great interest in our grapes. As the production capacity has been insufficient, we have doubled the production this year compared to last year; yet there is always a shortage of supplies that buyers can demand. With increasing awareness in the export market, we will continue to work on our exports by improving the production.”

Infinite Transformation of Korean Rice Korean Rice Processed Foods Captivate the World

As well-being food consumption is greater than ever around the world, Korean rice processed foods are receiving much attention abroad. In particular, the nutritional excellence of rice has already been proven and is recognized as safe and healthy food by the world. Recently, even the Western countries, whose common staple foods are flour-

based, are increasingly drawing interest to the benefits of rice, including the growing consumption of processed foods using rice as an ingredient. In line with this trend, the rice processed foods in Korea is stretching the role not only as a substitute for meals but also as a snack and desserts.


Spotlighted as a Gluten-Free Food According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs(MAFRA), the export of Korean rice processed foods has reached USD 89 million in the last year. This is an increase of 24% compared to USD 72 million in 2017. The items which led such increase were cooked rice, traditional rice cakes, and rice beverages. Thanks to the strong Korean Wave, the exporting countries are also expanding from Japan, Vietnam and China, to the United States and Europe. An important aspect of European and US exports is that Korean rice processed foods are recognized as gluten-free. Gluten refers to insoluble proteins present in wheat and other cereals which imply that all foods made with flour contain gluten. There are people who should absolutely avoid gluten; those with celiac disease, which causes obesity. People with this disorder are exposed to allergies to gluten consumed through such as wheat and barley. In severe cases, the absorption of the small intestine is delayed, resulting in non-

stop indigestion and diarrhea. Therefore, many of the Westerners who take bread or pasta as a staple, or regularly enjoy cakes, biscuits, and snacks made of flour suffer from celiac disease. In such circumstances, gluten-free Korean rice processed foods seem appealing to overseas consumers. In response to this interest, The Korea Rice Foodstuffs Association has been participating in GFexpo, the Gluten Free Expo in Italy since 2016. There will be 8 domestic companies participating this year to promote the excellence of Korean rice processed foods to overseas buyers and consumers. Cho Sang-hyun, the director of The Korea Rice Foodstuffs Association, said, “In other countries, there is an emerging market for gluten-free or removing certain additives from food. This trend is powerful in the U.S. and Europe. Therefore, we are expanding the export of the goods to these countries beside the existing market.�

Not only the Korean traditional culture events are held here, but also ‘cooking classes’ where one can learn and make Korean food are available, where the number of visitors is increasing due to the high satisfaction. In fact, the number of foreigners who took cooking classes last year was 6,200 with soaring popularity. Recently, a series of events related to <Korea Agrafood> are also in progress. In Korea, Boseong in Jeollanam-do has emerged as a main kiwi producing region.

The geographical indication system is designed to protect a trademark right for a product having a specific geographical origin and ensure the quality, reputation, and characteristics of the product of the origin according to the agricultural products quality control act.

Boseong Kiwis Go Global The farming association rakes in about 3.6 billion won as the total sales, of which 0.3 billion won is from the export. The export volume is increasing each year after the first export to Japan in 2013. Boseong kiwis are second to none in comparison with Zespri kiwis in terms of taste and texture, and the farming association is inundated with inquiries from overseas buyers. This is because the farming association considers the quality unification to be the first thing to do to promote Boseong kiwis and expand the export volume of the kiwis. To this end, the farming association is providing the farmers with education or training on the kiwi cultivation on a regular basis, and receiving consultations from experts. Further, the farming association is working hard for the sorting process. It applies strict sorting standards on size, shape, and weight of each kiwi. The farming association is very thorough in sorting, and never mixes B-grade kiwis which are slightly less marketable with A-grade kiwis. Recently, it is preparing for the acquirement of the global good agricultural practices (GAP) certification in cooperation with Chonnam National University to expand its kiwi export. In addition to its various efforts, it is soon to be designated as an export complex by the Korean government. Mr. Lee said, “Zespri exports only kiwis meeting its rigid standards and is thus gaining global consumers’ trusts due to the consistent taste and quality of its kiwis. We expect that Boseong kiwis will gain trust from consumers at home and abroad due to our continued efforts for the quality unification. Healthy Fast Food, Bap Burger he burger, which comes with cooked patty and mixed with vegetables and sauce, is one of the most beloved foods in the world. Rice-holic Koreans The Koreans have exceptional love for rice. Their attachment to rice is so big that there is even a saying that “Koreans hang in there with rice.” Even when you ask each other’s regards, or when you make an appointment with a person you want to be friend with, rice is always present in the sentence. For this reason, Koreans don’t miss rice out on meals. For example, ‘gimbap’ the rice is rolled in seaweed, ‘juk’ cooked by stirring rice in soup left after eating hot pot dishes, and ‘fried rice’ mixing in the rice in the remaining sauce. Every now and then rice is also eaten with something which seems very unlikely such as ‘Chibap’ is the case. It is typically eaten together with fried chicken, or mixed with chicken sauce after munching the chicken. The brand ‘Sangju Peach’ is now recognized as the fruit rich in juice with the greatest taste in the Southeast Asian market.

Peaches tend to soften due to summer respiration of fruits compared to other fruits. As a result, not only the shelf life is short and the freshness is drastically reduced, but also it is not easy to store, which makes it difficult to manage peaches for export. In order to set up infrastructure for exporting peaches, we focus on enlarging investment in sorting and packaging peaches. Particular efforts were made to steadily secure the finest quality without defects, and to ensure consistent export volume.

After foreign buyers start to deposit their confidence in our product, the sales has been on the rise recently. Moreover, to strengthen the commercial value of the product, we’ve established a peach distribution facility and introduced an automated sorting machine to differentiate from the rest of the peaches in the market. Gwangjang Market Loved by Michelin & Netflix Gwangjang Market is one of representing Korean traditional markets. It includes so-called alleys offering a variety of things to see, do, and enjoy. One of the alleys is the very food alley where about 90 eateries serve various foods including yukhoe(Korean-style beef tartare), bindaetteok(mung-bean pancake), kalguksu (handmade noodle soup), bunsik(various snack foods including tteokbokki[stir-fried rice cake]), jokbal(braised pig trotters), modeum-jeon(assorted pan-fried delicacies), and many others. Among these foods, kalguksu, bindaetteok, and yukhoe are considered the most popular ones that represent Gwangjang Market. The market is recognized by both domestic and foreign media for the tastes of dishes it serves and its tradition. For example, Netflix, global streaming media, featured one of kalguksu restaurants in Gwangjang Market on its show, Street Food. What’s more, Michelin Guide, which announces a selection of restaurants in the world, selected one of yukhoe restaurants in Gwangjang Market, and this selection drew a great deal of attention. In Gwangjang Market, there is also a vintage shop covering vintage clothing. The shop is frequented by many regular customers who look for retro-style unique clothes that may be no longer commercially available now. The market is famous for yeopjeon dosirak which is a lunchbox obtained in exchange for Korean traditional coins, and oil tteokbokki that is pan-fried in chili oil. Yeopjeon dosirak can only be enjoyed in Tongin Market. Yeopjeon means a coin used in old times in Korea, and customers can purchase items with the old coins to make their own lunchboxes. Customers can exchange 5,000 won for ten yeopjeons and a disposable lunchbox container at the entrance of the market, and so have some fun from the unique experience that other markets do not provide.
