PRESIDENTS LETTER
It’s hard to believe that summer and fall came and went so quickly here at AHPD. We loved seeing so many of you enjoying the pools, community centers, parks and events during summer and fall. Staff works hard year-round to provide the best programs and offerings for you and your family so just because it’s getting colder out, the fun never stops at AHPD.
We hope that we will see you at festive holiday special events, skating at the outdoor ice rinks, racing down the sled hills in the colder months and enjoying the parks, courts and playgrounds in the spring.
We are excited to share that several capital projects have been completed including refinishing the Forest View outdoor tennis courts, path replacement at Nickol Knoll Golf Club and replacement of the basketball court at Prairie Park. In 2023, we are looking forward to completing additional capital projects such as shorline restoration at Arlington Lakes Golf Club and playground replacement at Sunset Ridge.
Other News from the Park District:
• The Park District has submitted an Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant application that will go towards proposed improvements to Recreation Park. Improvements to the park include: building a fully accessible playground, outdoor fitness equipment, brand new tennis courts and more. We hope to find out early next fall if we received the grant. Visit ahpd.org to view the Phase 1 Concept Plan.
• The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting and Distinguished Budget Presentation Award to Arlington Heights Park District.
• The United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced that Heritage Tennis Club is one of 33 winners in the USTA’s annual Outstanding Facility Awards program, which recognizes excellence in the construction and/or renovation of tennis facilities throughout the country.
Thank you to our residents for your continued support of the Park District. We love serving you and your families all year long. As always, we look forward to seeing you in the parks, on the golf courses, in the tennis clubs, recreation centers, museum, playgrounds and ball fields….where the fun happens in Arlington Heights!
Sincerely, Maryfran H. LenoArlington Heights Park District Board President

SWIM LESSONS
What should I sign up for?
Water Babies
6-24 months with one parent in water with baby. 30 min Start exposing your baby to a body of water bigger than the kitchen sink now! This will help them better adjust to swimming lessons in a few years. We use songs and games to relax your baby and hopefully squeeze out a smile. We introduce holding positions so you are comfortable holding your baby in water. Other adults are welcome to watch class from the side of the pool. This class is in our warm water pool.
Water Toddlers
2-4 yrs with one parent in water with a child. 30 min. We add on to our Water Babies class format by introducing skills that will take place in our Junior Swim School classes. For the last 4 minutes, the instructor typically plays a game or we enjoy the kiddie slide and sprays. If your 3 or 4-year-old is comfortable in a pool, consider signing them up for Junior Swim School, instead of this class, which is with no parent in water to give them that extra push of independence in the water. This class is in our Family Activity Pool.
Junior Swim School (JSS)
3-6 yrs. 3:1 ratio. No parents in water. 30 min. For most – it’s the first time a child enters a pool without a parent so we begin by making your child feel comfortable. This may look like simply focusing on getting the face and hair wet at first, which can be scary for some. Then progressing through supported floats, bobs, kick board use, and eventually swimming 3 yards with no assistance under water. No goggles. See www.ahpd.org/programs/swim-lessons/ for why we recommend no goggles at this level. There are three levels in JSS – Snails, Turtles and Jellyfish. If your child completes all Jellyfish skills, we can move them to our Swim School Program if that works for your schedule. This class is in our Family Activity Pool.
Swim School
5-12 yrs. 6:1 ratio. 30 min
A group environment to motivate your child. Children are evaluated on the first day and grouped with kids of a similar skill set. There are nine levels in Swim School. There may be children in your child's group at a slightly different level than your child. Our instructors teach to all levels in their group. Our first level begins with correct face and body position, floats, and opening eyes underwater without goggles. Your child will then progress through levels where all the swim strokes are introduced and eventually work towards treading in deep water, dives, and flip turns. The instructor typically plays a game using swim school skills for the last 4 minutes. This class is in our lap pool. Diving well is used to complete some skills in our higher levels.
Teen/Adult Group Lessons – Beginner 13 yrs and up. 6:1 ratio. 30 min. It’s never too late to learn basic water safety and survival skills. Swimming is a life skill. This class is for the teen or adult who is not comfortable in water. Flotation belts can be used to relax your muscles if you tense up in water. We will work on floating, breathing, kicking with a kickboard, elementary backstroke, and treading water (a basic survival skill).
Teen/Adult Group Lessons – Advanced 13 yrs and up. 6:1 ratio. 30 min. This class is for the teen or adult swimmer who can swim at least one length of a 25-yard pool. You’re signing up for this class because you want to be more efficient with breathing, endurance tips, or learn a new stroke.

Who is teaching my child?
Almost all of our instructors are currently high school or college students. Many are high school and college swimmers and quite a few are interested in a career specializing in early childhood and/or teaching. We aim for our swimming lesson program to be a highlight of your child’s school year and that is only possible because of our staff.
Refund, Make-Up Policy and Participant Code of Conduct
Please read through this policy to ensure a safe and fun environment for all swimmers before you sign up. Visit www.ahpd.org/programs/swim-lessons/or contact Angela Neill, Aquatic Supervisor – Swim Lessons, 847-577-3029.

Session II
• Begins week of February 26 – 4 weeks

Last class ends the week before spring break for most school districts.
Session III
• Begins week of April 16 – 5 weeks
Pop Up Swim Lesssons
Ages 3-12 years

• An à la carte experience
• No session dates to worry about
• One, 30 minute swim lesson with private oneon-one attention
• Sign up for one - or sign up for 10! It's up to you. No fussing with a six week session when you might be missing classes due to vacation or other activities.
• Tell your instructor what you want to work on and we'll make it happen

ADULT LEAGUES
The Park District offers adult leagues at a variety of competitive levels to accommodate players and teams with a range of recreational interests and abilities. All players must be 18 years or older.
Registration
One player registers an entire team and all fees are due at registration. Register for your preferred level and, if that level is full, register for the waitlist. Do NOT register for the wrong competitive level to get into a league. If you are a player looking to join a team, please contact the league supervisor.
Bracketing and Scheduling
Once registration closes, brackets and season schedules are created. Final brackets are determined by a variety of factors including the number of teams registered and past season records.
• We try our best to evenly assign game time slots and cannot accommodate special schedule requests.
• Once schedules are finalized, we will email a schedule link, season information, and team roster/ waiver instructions to the captain.
Rosters and Waivers
Your team roster also serves as the individual waiver for all players and a new roster with all players’ signatures must be submitted before the start of your first game EVERY season.
For more information about programs on this page contact Nick Wirth, Recreation Supervisor, at nwirth@ahpd.org.
Adult Pickleball NEW!

The slower pace of this class will give players the opportunity to develop the skills needed to play this fun and energetic game. All equipment will be provided.
