At Barber - 2018 / Photo: etechphoto.com
Greetings from sweltering Texas where relief is finally creeping our way. The heat wave just snapped; no more triple-digit days for now. The racing drought has also snapped as we just returned from a successful weekend at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway and prepare for the festival-less Barber Motorsports Park races. There are a couple housekeeping items to mention. We are addressing the magazine mailing list glitch and AHRMA MAGs should be arriving in everyone’s mailboxes. Do not hesitate to let us know if your copy is still missing. We have been running a little late with the last two issues and are trying our best to get back on schedule. Pavement pounders need to read the Roadrace Director column which includes pertinent information regarding the upcoming event at Barber Motorsports Park. There is also some exciting news in Cindy McLean’s column about videographers and live-streaming activities at Diamond Don’s and Barber. This will enhance our Barber exposure since we will be sans spectators and also show the world what they are missing at the Diamond Don’s Riverport National off-road extravaganza. Page Layout Designer, Kevin McIntosh, continues to dazzle with the AHRMA MAG layout. The August issue was crammed with eye-popping images. Thanks go out to our hard-working July and August action photo contributors: Kate Jorgenson, Lorena Walker, Kelly Shane, Bobby Hedge, Teresa Houde, Thomas Aubrey, Ed Weger, Sharon Bean and Dawn Deppi. This publication also relies on our race recap volunteers. Hats off to our recent reporters: Joshua Schucker, Wes Orloff, David Aldana, Jason Colon, Albert Newmann, Debbie Poole, Jim Essaff, Tom Schuman, Kevin McIntosh and Bill Gould. August was so full of dirt there was neither time nor space to include any asphalt, but it’s all in this edition. You know him, you love him, you wanna take him home to mow your grass, Ed Bargy, speaks his piece this month. His straightforward number plate ‘seminar’ covers proper number plate design and display with an intent to make scoring and flagging easier and more accurate for those who are responsible for signals to you, the rider, and for the folks in charge of manual scoring. It’s a must-read. My son, Joe, and I are looking forward to (safely) minglin’ with the AHRMA family soon and tanglin’ with some tarmac. Until next month—safe travels and racing. Joe W. VOLUNTEERS ROCK!
All Disciplines are back!
AHRMA is a memberowned, not-for-profit organization. Member owned, essentially member managed, member staffed, member funded... you get the picture. All of us are AHRMA. As you may know, most other racing organizations are private, for-profit companies. Ideas are everywhere. Sorting through and implementing ideas is the hard part. Our leadership has poured over the lists of ideas and earmarked what we deem as the best ones for implementation. Converting vision into reality takes talent and work. AHRMA staff can only do so much. From my time in the paddock, I have been impressed with the array of quality people who make up our membership. Analyzing the skill sets needed to accomplish specific goals, and looking within our ranks for those skill sets, became a mission of mine. Reaching out to my colleagues on the Board of Trustees and at AHRMA HQ yielded a bounty of possibilities. Matching the lists of tasks to the lists of talented members has been an ongoing project in recent months. I am so proud of the response and engagement from our members, providing artwork support, editorial assistance, coordinating logistics, writing articles, researching sticky issues, building marketing plans, printing stickers and shirts, engaging media contacts, donating raffle prizes, managing the raffle process, video reporting our race and paddock action, scouring our membership for specific talent, engaging sponsors, pandemic management, professional insurance advice, organizing our policy and procedures, analyzing our investment accounts, rules committees, and solving problems. Many times, the call was made to a member who had the potential to meet an AHRMA need, and time after time you answered the call. We salute you, the AHRMA volunteer. – Arthur Kowitz AHRMA Chairman of the Board 386.547.9504 dbsuperbiker@gmail.com

I am very happy to report racing has resumed across all AHMHA disciplines. Thanks to everyone for complying with all the COVID compliance requirements and supporting our regional and national coordinators as they navigated the scheduling (and rescheduling) challenges of this season. With the fall calendar full of events at popular venues in all disciplines, it promises to be good times for AHRMA members. One development that has prompted numerous inquiries was the announcement that the 2020 Lakeview Motorsports Park Credit: Aaron Parrill Barber Vintage Festival has been cancelled – and yes, although it will not be a spectator event this year with the usual vendors and festivities, all AHRMA events are still on and promise to be better than ever. I just returned from a couple weeks in Colorado competing in the 50th annual Ute Cup Trial, trail riding in the high-country with AHRMA friends and participating in VMX at Lakeview Motorsports Park. Although not an AHRMA event, the Ute Cup is a prestigious event with a number of our members competing this year. It played out over two days, 120 miles of trail, 80 sections all above 11,500 feet. Relationships were made at the event which promise a renewed presence of AHRMA Trials in the Rocky Mountain and Heartland Regions. Looking forward to seeing my AHRMA friends and making new ones at upcoming events this fall!!! One-AHRMA – Curtis E. Comer AHRMA Executive Director 931.308.0338 curt.comer@ahrma.org

AHRMA racing at Barber Motorsports Park is almost here. Even though the Festival part was cancelled due to COVID- 19, AHRMA is still racing. If you have all your ducks in a row in advance, things will go more smoothly for you. Have your AHRMA COVID waiver printed in color and signed in advance if possible. There will be some forms to sign at Credentials if you cannot preprint yours. You will save yourself time by having your tech form(s) (one per bike) printed and filled out in advance. Tech forms will be available at the event. You cannot go through tech until you have completed your form(s). Go into your MSR account and make sure your transponder number is proper for your bike(s). Timing does not have time to look up your transponder number. You have one to look at; she has hundreds and really needs your help so that your information is correct on all the timing posts. Please check your garage and make sure all your bike information is in there correctly (make, model, year etc.). This information is pertinent for press releases. Make sure your racing numbers are legal and legible on your bike. Thank you to all those with legal and legible numbers. Pretty does not equal legible. This has been an ongoing problem and it is time to resolve it. If hand scorer and starter cannot read your number, you risk your scoring to be improper. Yes, we have electronic timing. Do you trust electronics to work flawlessly? Do you want to gamble against electronics with your race finish and points? AHRMA does not want to put all our eggs in the electronic basket, so fix your number(s). If you emailed or snail mailed your 2020 RR Paddock Park Form (2019 forms not accepted), you should already know your paddock assignment, or will soon. All AHRMA armbands are for sale at the event by AHRMA credential personnel. There is no presale for armbands. Be prepared, only cash or checks accepted for AHRMA RR armband purchases. All camping and power will be collected onsite by track credential personnel. Credit card or cash is acceptable for camping and power. These are only a few things to help get your Barber House in order. Go to ahrma.org and read all the information concerning Barber. We strive to make everything go as smoothly as possible and count on your help. As a final note, 2020 has not been kind to anyone. We have had to make many hard decisions for the good of our racers. However, we are already diligently working on the 2021 schedule. Be prepared. As you learned last year, surprises are in the works. – Faynisha and Tony Pentecost AHRMA National Roadrace Directors Faynisha: 256.506.6603 Tony: 256. 506. 8254 ahrma@oneracing.org

Racing and smiles for miles After some great adventures out west visiting Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernadino, CA, AHRMA/CALVMX had some great racing on a fantastically prepared REM track. Mr. Luke Sayer was kind enough to give me a chance to ride some true vintage iron, so I raced his Triumph 650 twin. I had the most fun on a motocross track in years riding that thing. Whoever came up with the idea to put the shifter on the left and the rear brake on the right side
of a motorcycle is my hero because I am here to tell you I forgot on more than one occasion that the lever at my right big toe was not a brake lever. Sketchy. Then we moved on to Lakeview MX in Ordway, CO. Jason Colon had been scrambling for most of the year to find a replacement for our Milliken cancellation and finally, at the last minute, he came up with Lakeview. The track had a great vintage friendly layout with some great and friendly track owners. The racing was intense all day along with the temperatures at Lakeview, but we all managed to fight our way through for a great day of racing. We are all making do with the crappy hand COVID-19 has dealt us this year. Events are happening, AHRMA members are racing, faces are smiling, and memories are being made. At the end of the day, forget those plaques and championship jackets. They don’t mean a thing compared to the lifelong friendships that come from this sport. Motorcycle racing is my life. It is who I am and the best people I know in this world, I know because of it. I certainly appreciate each and every one of our members who I get to meet and spend time with at these events. Thank you all, and God bless. – Tony Paul AHRMA Off-Road Director offroad.director@ahrma.org 256.665.1279
The Beat Goes On The more things change the more they stay the same. In my column last issue, I assured you that the Barber Vintage Festival was a done deal, and then a few days later, we made the announcement that while the Vintage Festival was canceled, AHRMA Roadracing, Cross Country and Trials will be racing as scheduled. In addition, the drawing for the Eddie Lawson Tribute Bike will still be held at the Roadracing awards ceremony Saturday night at Barber. In the meantime, while we are adjusting to the needs of a race weekend without the festival, there is still a LOT of preparation and, of course, racing going on between now and then. This coming weekend, AHRMA Motocross (Vintage, Post Vintage and Next Gen) will be racing at Monster Mountain in Tallassee, AL, while Roadracing will be taking place at the Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC. With barely time to catch our breath, the weekend immediately following will have MX, CC and Trials blowing it out at Diamond Don's in Jefferson, TX, the biggest Offroad event this year and Roadracing will be wrapping things up before Barber at Talladega Gran Prix in Munford, AL. Due to current spectator restrictions on our events, which would otherwise attract large audiences, AHRMA is getting creative in order to sustain and increase interest in all types of our historic racing. To that end, we've engaged a couple of videographers to live stream our racing and related activities coming up on the schedule. Diamond Don's will be our first time out of the gate with this technology, and we are lucky enough to have an experienced awardwinning videographer to provide us coverage. There will be live streaming to AHRMA social media platforms including our new Youtube channel which we will be promoting leading up to the event. In addition, there will be two official videographers at Barber, so both Offroad and Roadracing will have live coverage for those of you unable to join us. As we move into 2021, offering more widespread coverage of our events through technology will become an important part of our marketing efforts, especially with the multi-discipline AHRMA Classic MotoFest events that are in the works. Our Executive Committee has been busy, and I look forward to making some special announcements as events are finalized. And in the meantime, we are heading up the road to CMP tomorrow because it's time to go racing again!

The 2020 Rehv Moto AHRMA National Historic Roadrace Series made its long-awaited return to action (finally!) during their first visit to Blackhawk Farms Raceway—and it was worth the wait. The AHRMA roadrace circus rolled into the scrappy little track in South Beloit, Illinois, Thursday afternoon in late July after almost five months since any competitor had experienced the red mist; there was an anxiety and excitement that was palpable in the hot and humid Midwest air. Some of that excitement and anxiety was also due to the new COVID-19 world we all live in, which required social distancing and masks. I am happy to report that despite the new challenges 2020 has brought us, the attendees did a great job respecting each other and keeping everyone safe— even if we may have doubled our steps due to ‘The walk of shame’ to retrieve a forgotten mask for the riders meeting, bathroom, showers, etc. For some, the AHRMA weekend actually kicked off on Thursday as some of the local Chicago and Milwaukee
racers took part in Big Bob’s rescheduled (and well attended) vintage circus track day, hosted by Moto-Vid. Kathryn at Moto-Vid runs a great, well organized track day and is highly recommended. Official AHRMA practice started on Friday, and by the show of hands at the riders meeting, it was apparent this was the first time at Blackhawk for the majority of AHRMA racers. We also welcomed 10 new racers (eight solos and one sidecar team) into the AHRMA fold through the road racing school. Welcome to all! By the end of practice, most of the racers were coming to terms with Blackhawk, a tricky little track that rewards precision, but a great fit for a vintage bike in a park-like setting. Did I mention it was a hot weekend? High temperatures in the 90s along with similar humidity levels meant hydration was the order of the day. We also had heat advisory warnings on Saturday and Sunday—although certain tire vendors and southerly based AHRMA officials were chuckling at our Midwest definition of hot… All photos in spread by: Ian Pokriefka @ NVUS Images

As hot as the temperature was, the action on the track was even hotter. Racing started out each day with the always entertaining Le Mans start CB160 race. Perennial class winner, Greg Glevicky, took wins both days, followed home on Saturday by John Scales and Dan Waite, and Sunday by Stuart Sanders and our AHRMA volunteer with the weird beard, Rosco Tuffli. Ironman Alex McClean took the win in Pre-1940 both days, and Duane Kuhlow taking the Historic Lightweight Production win, under pressure, from second place Mike Baker on Sunday, less than a second separating them. Although Dave Roper set fast lap in 350GP, Alex McLean won 350GP both days (by a whisker on Sunday). The Sportsman 350 war was won by young fast guy, Kevin Dinsmoor, on Saturday and ‘veteran’ fast guy, Eric Cook, on Sunday. The Sound of Thunder 1 race was up next, and local instructor/ fast guy and lightweight track record holder Kevin Van Engen showed all the big bike guys the fast way home on an SV650 turning a blistering 1:12 in the process. Kevin wasn’t to have it all his own way on Sunday however, limping home a severely chattering SV to second behind MotoAmerica Twins competitor, Kris Lillegard, on a KTM RC8. Social distancing was most definitely not being practiced in the 500 Premiere Cup, as locals Wes Orloff and Andy Mauk were glued together for eight laps, Orloff inheriting the win after Mauk tucked the front end passing SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020
a lapper on the final corner of a thrilling last lap. Both Mauk and Orloff DNS and DNF, respectively, on Sunday due to previous day’s crash damage on Mauk’s Keith Leightyprepared Honda, and a shorted battery on the warm-up lap for Orloff. Andy Findling survived the carnage and brought his BSA home for the win. Race five brought out a healthy group of 14 sidecars to the Blackhawk pavement for the first time in decades, and they put on a great show. Fast lap and the SC2 win went to Tim Joyce and Kat Collins, while second place was picked up by ‘sideways is my ways’ team Trosper, with Brad Carlisle and Eddie Neubauer filling out the box. Dale Lavender picked up the TT1 win, while the Stivason family dominated SC1 and SC3. Race six, Sound of Thunder 2, was another school put o n by Kevin Van Engen, taking the win over Kris Lillegard and Chris Haesemeyer both Saturday and Sunday, while Ralph Staropoli rode to a strong SOS3 win on Saturday. an awesome race-long battle in the heat in Sound of Singles 3 on Sunday, with Bill just edging out Frick for the win. Kevin Dinsmoor put it on top of the box again in F250. Classic Sixties and 650, F125 and F250 saw some long-time AHRMA family legacy at the top, with iron worker Wesley Goodpaster winning Classic Sixties 650, second generation fast kid, Colton Roberts, taking the F125 win, and Alex Mclean McCleaning up for the win in Classic Sixties. Race eight saw a great battle of fast lightweight jockeys, Bill Doran and Greg Glevicky, with Greg on his four-stroke just edging Bill on his two-stroke. It was another squeaker in Class C Footshift as Dave Tompkins handed a rare second place to Alex McLean (who had an even rarer fall on Sunday). Ralph the mouth Wessell took the Handshift win over Warren Heir who is developing a beautiful ‘new’ Harley WR racer. Race nine was an eclectic mix of classes, with Randy Sullinger taking the BOT1 win on Saturday; Dakota Wolter returning the favor to take Sunday’s BOT1 win over Scott Billings
and Greg Hutcheson on his big Hog. New Mexican, Dennis Parrish, took Saturday’s Formula Vintage win after a dog fight with Alan Perry. Sunday’s Formula Vintage and Formula 750 was a family affair, with the nicest guys in the paddock, ‘Dad,’ Jeff Hargis, winning Formula Vintage, and F750 going to the fruit of his loins, Nick Hargis. Middleweight Superbike was won by Paul Elledge on Dan’s May’s BMW, over Kawasaki-mounted local fast guy, Ben Sloter, and Guzzi-mounted Alex Cook. Race ten saw the Next Gen Superbikes out on track with Scott Rothermel taking the win on Saturday. Daniel Peter held off locals, Steve Alexander, Mike Harlow, and Paul Elledge, to take the Motard class win. Wesley Goodpaster put it on top of the box again in BEARS, and Travis Frier, exchanging wins with Duane Kuhlow, took the Novice Historic Production Heavyweight top honor. Saturday’s Race eleven had thrilling finishes in all three classes. Modern jockey, Chris Haesemeyer, squeaked out a win over Greg Avello in Formula Thunder by only 0.074 seconds. William Wells won an even closer battle over Sven Bley in Next Gen Superbike Lightweight by only 0.001 seconds

with local, Andy Mauk, bringing the Keith Leighty-tuned VFR500 home in third. The theme of close finishes continued in Vintage Superbike Heavyweight with Dennis Parrish stealing the win over Alex Cook by less than a second. Great racing by all. Randy Sullinger took the Next Gen Superbike Lightweight win on Sunday in a little less dramatic fashion, and Kris Lillegard threw down fastest lap by some margin to keep Haesemeyer’s Formula Thunder win honest on the second day of racing. Race twelve saw Scott Billings return to the top of the box in Next Gen Superbike Saturday and J. Scott Rothermel taking Sunday’s win, while Ralph Starpoli took wins over locals, Mike Harlow and Steve Alexander, on motards in SOS3 Saturday; Alexander and his Husqvarna picked up the win Sunday. Dakota Wolter took a convincing win in BOT2, and Chi Vin regular, Matt Joy, took home the Vintage Superbike Lightweight win. Dakota Wolter in Sound of Thunder 3
The final race of the day saw the much-anticipated SOT3 race showdown between Josh Saxe on his ‘little buddy’ SV650 vs. podium regular and team 811 member, Chris Haesemeyer. No one told Dakota Wolter about it however and he took the win with Saxe in second and Haesemeyer cutting his way up from last on the grid to third. The trio turned the podium upside down with a great race on Sunday, this time Haesemeyer taking the win over Wolter and Saxe. This is going to be a fun class to watch for the rest of the year. Thruxton Cup was won by Clint Austin both days, with Jeff Hargis taking the 750 Sportsman win over Mike Dixon and Matt Esterline. Overall, Blackhawk was a great event to kick-start the rest of the AHRMA season. Great racing and great to see the AHRMA family again. Blackhawk Down. On to Gingerman…

Fresh off the return to roadracing at Blackhawk Farms, the back-to-back weekends gave the air of some return to normality, even if it is one that includes social distancing and facial coverings. We are back to racing and it feels good! Granted, I was a bit nervous driving from Wisconsin through Illinois considering the recent travel ban (at the time) between the two states; just a reminder how far we truly are from the normality we once knew. So, keeping the fluid intake to a minimum and steering clear of Chicago, I made my way as quickly as possible to the safety of Michigan and the closest accessible gas station. Boy, this travel thing is sure tricky now… The entrance sign to Gingerman Raceway is always a welcome sight, but for whatever reason, it always takes way longer to reach it coming off Highway 196 than I remember. Did I pass it? No, just be patient, there it is, there is everyone in their pits, on the track, Gingerman, it’s so good to be back! 16

Out of the Gate in the Le Mans race on Saturday, Jonas Stein #123, John Scales #294 and Brian Larrabure #14 made things interesting finishing first, second and third in the alwaysanticipated Le Mans-start race. Greg Glevicky #1C, was plagued by mechanical gremlins that found him out of the race by lap three. Like a bit of deja vu, Sundays Le Mans race saw the same results though at a slower pace due to overnight rain. Glevicky was able to get back on pace and made Larrabure work for a second third place with a photo finish (.073 second difference). Class C Footshift was a weekend battle between David Tompkins #33Q and Alex McLean #122, with David coming out on top both days. McLean did make things interesting Sunday with a strong start, crossing the finish line a half-second behind Tompkins.

Novice Historic Production Lightweight was dominated by Mike Baker #17C on Saturday with a Difference of 36 seconds between first and Tim Terrell #22B in second place. On Sunday, Baker let Terrell and Shane Powers #019 battle it out for the top spot. Both riders were fully in-sync through the first half the race, with Terrell finally pulling away for the win.

Race 3
Sportman 750 was, one might say, “Pure Michigan,” with track locals Jeff Hargis #84 and Matt Esterline #237 going head-to-head and putting on a great show for all those trackside. Esterline would find the checkered flag first on Saturday and Hargis, after some reworking of his front end, would find victory .888 seconds ahead of Esterline on Sunday. Stuart Carter #76 found another gear in Sunday’s 500 Premier Vintage Cup race and bested Wes Orloff by a difference of just .122 seconds at the checker. Wes by no means slowed down for Stuart as they both elevated their pace from Saturday, the difference was Stuart dropping 23 seconds to find the win.
Sound of Thunder 3 was a tale of many close races on both Saturday and Sunday. Joshua Saxe #1d reminded everyone both days why he has the #1 plate, taking first both days, while Chris Haesemeyer #80X chased him all weekend for two 2 second place finishes. Greg Hutcheson #56R, Thomas Ryan #002 and Shane Quigg #762 battled it out for third place both days, with Shane rounding out the podium Saturday and Greg on Sunday. Dakota Wolter joined the fun on Sunday and matched up perfectly with Arch E. York #71Y with Wolter just ahead by .342 seconds at the finish line in seventh position. Saturday’s Sound of Singles 2 had a great battle between Steve Alexander #43A and Mike Harlow #X30. It really doesn’t get much closer than this with lap differences of .562 all the way Matt Esterline #237 & Jeff Hargis #84 down to .034 between the two. Now that’s some battled hard and split the weekend. close racing. Photo by: Ian Pokriefka @ NVUS Images

Formula Thunder didn’t disappoint with a three-way battle for first place on Saturday. Chris Haesemeyer #80X came out on top both Saturday and Sunday, with Tim Nelson #850 about as close a second place as you can get, just .001 behind on Saturday and .097 on Sunday. Mark Hoyt #89R was a very close third, just .0493 seconds behind, or should I say next to the other podium finishers on Saturday. Daniel Peter #X0, Mike Harlow #X30 and Steve Alexander #43A blasted across the finish line (in that order) within seconds of each other in the Motard race Saturday. Peter repeated his win on Sunday with Alexander just a few ticks back in second place.

Race 5 – Sidecars
A grid of almost 20 sidecars Saturday was a pretty cool thing to see; maybe not the most of any recent side car grid, but during these challenging times, it was proof (along with 3 new monkeys passing race school the day before) that growth is happening on the three-wheel side of AHRMA racing. Driver Tim Joyce and Kat Collins #309 dominated all classes while taking first both Saturday and Sunday in SC Super Vintage (SC2). A distant second was Driver Eric and Celia Trosper X82 on Saturday and Driver Daniel May with Craig Chawla #93 on Sunday. Just to confirm, you weren’t seeing things if you thought you saw Gregory Glevicky as a monkey on Ryan Hunt’s rig #76 in Lost Era Sidecar. What doesn’t that guy do? Lost Boyz sure know how to have fun, and win. The duo took home first place on Saturday, with Sean & Susan Stivason #458 taking second and Adam Cramer’s rig rounding out the podium.

Saturday. Colton Roberts #9 followed, with John Scales #294 right behind. Brian Larrabure #14 and Greg Glevicky #1C were DNS for Saturday’s race, but Sunday was a different story with Glevicky coming out of what seemed to be a mechanical funk, dropped the hammer, not only taking the checker, but also besting Saturdays fastest class lap time by five seconds and improving on his fastest lap time from last year on the same track by two seconds.
Race 7
Gary Orr #111 had things wrapped up in Battle of the Twins 1 900cc-Open on both Saturday and Sunday. The battle for second and third was where the action was, with Greg Hutcheson #56R besting Brian Larrabure #14 to the line by .134 of a second for second place Saturday and Paul Canale #553 keeping Dakota Wolter #65W and Scott Billings #35R at bay for the last podium spot. Sunday saw similar action for second and fourth, with Larrabure moving up into second ahead of Hutcheson by .034 of a second at the checker. Wolter and Billings diced it up for fourth place almost replicating Saturday’s results with
Wolter a step ahead or .048 of a second ahead to be exact. Vintage Superbike Heavyweight saw Mark Hoyt #89R run away with the lead Saturday. Sunday’s spotlight was on Dennis Parrish #1R and Alexander Cook #092 swapping the lead multiple times throughout the race, with Parrish catching the checker just over a halfsecond ahead. All cylinders were firing during the Bears race on Saturday with Wesley Goodpaster #80 and Daniel May #93 shadowing each other until the end when Goodpaster was able to pull ahead for the win. Clay Land, who started off strong, dropped off the pace early on and limped across the finish line for third place. His issues would follow him into Sunday’s race, starting strong, but then ending the race early, while Alan Feinman stepped up and found the second podium spot of the day.

William Brian Wells #92R, Philip A. Johnson #22, Robert Himmelmann #62x
Philip picked this very weekend to mount a return to roadracing after 23 years away from track. Let just say he was a bit more than elated to be back on the track competing once again. In Next Gen Superbike Lightweight, Sven Bley #83B took home the win both days, with the rest of the pack a good distance behind. Andrew Mauk #X95 found the checker in second place on Saturday, while William Brian Wells #92R rounded out the podium Saturday in t h i r d and second on Sunday, just edging out Robert Himmelmann #62x by .173 of a second. The writing was on the wall (results board) in Vintage Superbike Lightweight, while Joshua Saxe #619 took home the W on Saturday with a solid lead of nine seconds ahead of Matthew Joy. Sound of Thunder 2 saw some of the most evenly matched groups of riders all weekend. Battles ensued through the entire grid. Chris Haesemeyer #80X, Garrett Carter #026 and Ralph Staropoli finished in that order with just a fraction of a second separating the podium finishers on Saturday. Other notable battles on Saturday were Joshua Saxe #1d besting Gary Orr #111 for fourth by .159 of a second with Brian Larrabure #14 one second behind them taking sixth place. pace and gave himself a four+ second lead over Orr and Staropoli. The fifth-place spot was hard fought with Sven Bley #83B hitting the checker less than a second before Tim Nelson #850. In Superbike Middleweight, Wes Orloff #133 switched things up a bit from his normal classes and rode a 1982 BMW R69 made available by a Paul Elledge injury during the practice rounds. Wes and Alexander Cook #092 had a good time on the track on Saturday, making it one for the memories with Orloff inching out Cook by .163 of a second. Matthew Joy rounded out the top three podium spots with a distant third place. With no Orloff on the Grid on Sunday, it was all Alexander Cook. Ben Sloter #71R was 11.5 seconds behind and Matthew Joy taking another third-place finish.
surely frustrated Rodney Menke #34R, who was charging hard at the end, but finishing third (what might seem like an eternity comparatively behind the leaders) at 1.431 seconds. Sheesh, that is some close racing! Battle of the Twins 2 0-900cc on Sunday showcased two evenly matched riders in Dakota Wolter #65W and Tony Prust #15X, with Wolter taking the checker .753 seconds ahead of Prust for the win.

Sportsman 750 territory, the two were locked onto the prize going into the last lap. Not sure what happened, but Dinsmoor blinked or I’m guessing had some sort of mechanical issue as he slowed dramatically in the final lap and the W went to Cook. Sunday saw a fresh battle between Jack Mattlin #297, Greg Potter #132 and 250 Grand Prix racer David Roper #7. I’m sure this made for interesting corner action, but in the end, Roper couldn’t keep up and it was a .248 split between them with Mattlin taking the win.
Race 12
It was all Chris Haesemeyer in Sound of Thunder 1 pushing lap times down to mid 1:30s and easily taking first Saturday. Clint Austin #1t and Tim Nelson #850 rounded out the podium Saturday. Sunday, with Haesemeyer not on the grid, Austin and Nelson took a run for first with Austin taking the win 1.594 seconds ahead of Nelson.
In review:
All in all, it was a great weekend of racing… with a few sprinkles to keep us on our toes and light on the throttle as needed. There was very little difference in the race weekend experience, social distancing has always been popular in the paddock, masks just make us look like hummm, a doctor… The Doctor??? Maybe a desperado or outlaw, just leave your leather chaps at home, okay… thanks!
It was great to finally see the new AHRMA merch in full swing and flying off the table. Now we all can feel cool on the racetrack and look cool off it! Shout-out goes to Derek “Stickboy” Bennett for making the trip up in support of all those with tire-related needs. You rock! Oh yea, please remember to pre-register, it helps keep grids manageable and not suddenly bloated on race day. Remember, registration fees are refundable, so there really is no risk, it just makes the racing experience better for all. Thank you to the Tutu Crew and everyone else who volunteered their time to make it another successful race weekend. Let’s keep it going! WHY STARTERS COMPLAIN ABOUT
The good, the bad and the simply hard to read number plates
BAD
FRONT NUM MBER PLATES BODY POSITION:
BY: ED BARGY
The problem is most frustrating with more and more tracks being built with flying bridge starter stands. These tracks also have no provision or option for the starter to get trackside for working the race flags. Now, the starter is further away from the racers as they come to the finish line.
Elevated stands are designed for automobile racing not motorcycle racing. The problem is in the sitting position of the racer. The car racer is generally sitting in at least a semi-reclined position and can easy to look up at the flying bridge. Motorcycle roadracers, on the other hand, are leaned forward in a racing tuck. This makes it difficult to look up at the elevated start stand. The diagram below (Figure #1) shows the field of vision of a car driver (green) vs. a bike racer (red).
24
WWW.AHRMA.ORG
CAR DRIVERS VS. MOTORCYCLE RIDERS
#1
Below are a couple diagrams showing racer distances from the flying bridge. This diagram (Figure #2) shows the relative fields of vision as they approach the flying bridge. Now, when the bikes are still far enough from the finish line, the rider can fairly easily look up. You can see that the start tower is out of the motorcycle rider’s field of vision sooner that the car driver. FIELD OF VIEW:
CAR DRIVERS VS. MOTORCYCLE RIDERS

AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020
(Figure#3) As the rider gets closer to the starter stand, there are three points to take into consideration 1. Is the point, where the racer can easily look up (green dashed line) 2. Is the point where most racers are no longer looking up at stand (solid red Lines) 3. Is the point where the starter will throw the flag on the riders (solid orange Lines) #3
STARTER'S TOWER
Point where starter displays flag for leader Point where racers no longer see tower Point where racers can see flags
Now the question is, “How does this relate to bad number plates?” Before the starter can display a flag to the leader he must be able to easily and quickly read the front number plate of the approaching bikes before they get to point #3. He needs enough time from being able to read the front plate and react to get the flag out in time for the racer to see it. The starter must be able to read the front number before the #2 point in the drawing to be able to get the flag out by the time the racers get to point #3. In most cases, the starter cannot display the flag when the leader is at point #1 because of the backmarkers about to be passed by the leader. (Figure #4) shows these points from the starter and manual scoring’s perspective. A. Is where the starter needs to be able to read the front number plate. B. Is the point where the starter needs to display the checkered flag before the racer stops looking up. C. Is the point, unfortunately, where most number plates can actually be read by the officials and the racers have already stopped looking up. Now, the argument most often brought up to justify poor numbers, is, “We have computer scoring, so we don’t need SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020
clear numbers.” My question now is, “How does that help the starter?” Even if we had, which we don’t, someone in the tower calling out to us, say for example, ”Your leader is #367,” the problem is, we still have to look trackside and visually find #367, which is usually in a pack of backmarkers, and then get the flag out in time. If we can’t read the number by the time the rider gets to point “C,” the racer is no longer looking up and the flag will actually come out when the racer is at Point “D.” When I was racing, I had the biggest clearest numbers I could fit on the front. I wanted the starter to be able to read them. I wanted the announcer, the spectators, the corner workers and potential sponsors to be able to read them and know who I was. If you read the chapter on number plates in the rule book, you will see that nowhere is “Artistic License” given to the layout of the numbers. Also, the companies that make these real pretty, artistic, and fancy looking numbers don’t read or FINISH LINE even know our rules for number #3 displays. So, the favor I’m asking all racers is to take a good look at your numbers. If they don’t match the rules and are difficult to read from a distance, please fix them. I also “challenge” anyone, to come up to the starter’s stand and try to pick out and write down the numbers of the first 10 to 15 racers as they come to the finish line. I’ll bet no one will take me up on this. ☺ Thank you for reading, Ed Bargy

______________ Shady Acres _ ______________ Motocross Park Friendsville, MD 7/25-26/2020
2020 Hagerty AHRMA National Cross Country Series Author: Joshua Schucker
The nation’s best vintage cross-country racers settled into Shady Acres Motocross Park for rounds five and six of the Hagerty National Series in late July. Shady Acres is a beautiful, sprawling property that served as a dairy farm in a past life. Truthfully, you would be certain the facility is still an active farm as you pass the barns, pastures, and hay fields. However, once you reach the back half of the property, the motocross track comes into view and you realize that the only Kaws around here are lime green.
Located just south of Friendsville, Shady Acres Motocross Park is situated in the far western part of Maryland. Just minutes from West Virginia and Pennsylvania, and close to the eastern continental divide, this region is home to rolling hills and mountains that create a beautiful landscape. The ample pits at the park sit fairly high in elevation allowing a gorgeous view of the surrounding area. And, if the draw of a national cross country event is not enough, the largest freshwater lake in the state is less than five miles to the south. Deep Creek Lake is popular vacation destination in the area and is surrounded by resorts, condos, unique amenities, and attractions providing a cool vibe and interesting opportunities to explore following the day’s racing.

___________ Michael Wright Photo by: Joe Spayd
James Smith Photo by: Joe Spayd
Shady Acres’ owners, Tim and Paula Thomas, are obviously proud of their facility and very enthusiastic about motorcycle racing and the people involved. Both could be seen throughout the property and pits all weekend meeting, conversing, and ensuring that everyone was having a good time. The Thomases treated the participants with genuine affection and made every effort to please. Tim even spent considerable time and effort to water and maintain the motocross track for some casual MX racing in the late afternoon for anyone interested (the track was great!). Mimicking the care and concern of the ownership, the team of National Cross Country Coordinator, Becky Hayes, and the Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Region’s crew facilitated a well-run event throughout the weekend. Mid-Atlantic’s Dave Kutskel and Mike Zdybak were charged with creating a top-level offroad loop using the variety of terrain provided at Shady Acres. The course took full advantage of the farm’s existing construct to jump from grass track, to single track, to farm lane, circling a couple farm ponds, weaving through pasture and fence rows, back to the woods for flowing two-track with fun elevation changes, and the ultimate in unique course design, a sprint through the milking parlor of the abandoned dairy barn. Heavy rains leading up to the event forced some late-minute changes and presented a few muddy areas. However, the area was blessed with great weather during the weekend, and the course provided a fun layout and great racing. To make things more interesting, the course was run in reverse on Sunday and was equally enjoyable and competitive.

Vintage:
Thirty-three riders hit the course Saturday morning for the vintage race, and after four laps, a familiar face sat atop the podium. Christian Brumbaugh has taken the vintage class by storm this year in national and regional competition. His Yamaha was pulling away from second place Brian Grove throughout the race. Dave Kutskel wedged his Honda in third between the Husqvarnas of Grove and fourth place Joe Cole. Brothers Larry and Kyle Warner followed each other across the line in fifth and sixth respectively. Both riding Yamahas, Kyle’s performance earned him top intermediate honors and served notice to his expert class sibling. There may be a black stripe in Kyle’s future. Brian Turk rode his IT200 to the class win in Pre-Modern Novice and a 14th overall position placing him just ahead of Rusty Kerns for top novice class rider in the final results. Suzuki TS185-mounted Ken Cichy would claim the top spot in Sportsman 200 Intermediate action followed by the Hodaka of 58 Brian Ashcraft 67K Marty Strouse Grant Reichart in second. Tommy Photo by: Joe Spayd Grimmel, the president of Potomac Vintage Riders, a huge sponsor of local vintage racing, would pilot his Penton to third behind Reichart. Cichy would go on to repeat his class win on Sunday as well. Becky Hayes, AHRMA’s Cross Country Coordinator did all she could to hang with Emily Reichart in the Women’s Intermediate class but would have to settle for second both days behind Reichart’s double class wins.

Brian Grove kept him a bit more honest this day in sticking to Brumbaugh’s tail throughout the race to finish second. Kutskel appeared to have another third overall wrapped up until Cole made a move the last lap and finished ahead of Kutskel by only four seconds! Steve Harouff would take his sharp 1974 MX Yamaha to top honors in the Vintage 50+ Intermediate class and a strong fifth overall. The hotly contested Sportsman 200 Expert class would claim overall positions six through eight. Timothy Grow would take the class win on his Husqvarna followed by the Yamahas of Larry Warner and Greg Barratt. Grow and Barratt were only seconds behind Saturday’s winner, Warner, each lap on Sunday until Grow made his move past Warner on the last lap and reached the checkered flag mere inches ahead of Warner. Richard Colahan would defend his class win from Saturday with another Classic Intermediate crown Sunday. Lee Stebleton and Lewis Mayer would finish one-two in the Vintage 60+ Intermediate class on a pair of unique bikes— Stebleton on an Austrian Puch and Mayer rockin’ a Rokon.

trip from Tennessee worthwhile by grabbing second place in the overall standings and the class win in Post Vintage Expert. Brian Grove held the early lead in the class before trouble on lap four handed the lead over to Farris. John Brunnett (SWM) and Wade Brown (HUSQ) would also make their way past Grove, which relegated him to fourth. Steve Bowman would fill out the overall top five and finish in second behind Cole in a competitive field of six in the Post Vintage 50+ Expert class. Adam Cadle would nail down third in that class, and those three would go on to repeat that finishing order in Sunday’s event as well. Ten riders took a shot at the Post Vintage 60+ Intermediate class. Bill Malec took an early lead, but it wasn’t going to last. Dave McIntyre took over the lead on lap two and didn’t look back for the win. Mike Zdybak was making a charge for the lead as the race wound down but would ultimately settle for second a mere five seconds behind. Dave Mitchell would take home third completing a top three sweep for Honda’s venerable XR200R. Sunday would see the same number of racers hit the course, but the domination of Brumbaugh came to a close. It would take a rider of Fred Hoess’ ilk to make it happen, as he joined in the action Sunday and took the overall win. Brian Grove would overcome his problems during Saturday’s afternoon race and finish a respectable second, while Brumbaugh would settle for third. For the second day in a row, Joey Spayd II took charge of the Post Vintage 200 Intermediate class with a win over Edward Klinger and Kevin Whipkey. Klinger kept pressure on the youngster both days but was unable to get past him. It was a great father/ son weekend as the Original Joe Spayd would also take class wins on Saturday and Sunday in Post Vintage 200 Novice during the morning races. Jason Hearn’s IT490 was a finelooking machine, as Tommy Grimmel can attest, as he watched Hearn make the move past him on lap three to take the Post Vintage Open Intermediate win. The competitiveness of the Post Vintage 60+ Intermediate class was again a highlight on Sunday. Mike Zdybak would carry some of his closing lap speed from Saturday’s race into Sunday as he stalked Dave Mitchell for three laps before finally pouncing at the last minute. Mike’s XR would clear Mitchell’s by two seconds for the win. Great course, great location, great venue, great racing, great friends in Friendsville. If you’re able to visit the Thomases and their Shady Acres motocross Park next year, believe me, it’s well worth the trip. And bring a spare bike for some great motocross action following the afternoon races, or a boat for the lake! Thank you to the property owners, the event coordinators, and volunteers who keep us racing and keep us safe. VMC Frames AHRMA National Vintage Dirt Track Series HEADS TO KANSAS! KANSAS CITY, KANSAS LAKESIDE SPEEDWAY / August 15th, 2020 Words & Photos by: Tom Schuman The Great Plains Flat Track Group were hosts to our first AHRMA short track race in Kansas City, Kansas. A big thanks go
out to Randy Koster and Jimmy O’Dell for welcoming AHRMA to their event. The Lakeside Speedway facility hosts weekly car races: USRA Modified, USRA Stock Cars, etc., on a 4/10th mile track. This was the first motorcycle event to be held at this facility. The track owner prepared the racetrack on Saturday and from what the riders said, the groove came in nicely which made for some excellent racing. This was the first AHRMA race in Kansas, and the AHRMA turnout was not as good as we were hoping. But the racing did not lack excitement. Beno Rodi, #27, took first in the Dinosaur class with Preston Palmer, #59d, taking second. David Aldana, #13, did not disappoint the crowd with wins in multiple classes: Sportsman 600, Senior 50+, Super Senior 60+ and Seventies Singles. Jeff Durand, #79, carded a win in the Sportsman 750 and a second in the Classic 500 class riding a Triumph. He also is a new AHRMA
member. Mike Newton, #42m, took the win in the Classic 500 class with Daniel Beher, #116, taking third. Other winners in the Sportsman 750 included Clayton Nelson, #45, in second and Beno Rodi, #27, in third. The fans were great and followed the safety guidelines for COVID-19. In talking to many of the fans, they had no idea that they would be seeing the “On Any Sunday” and racing legend David Aldana. The line was long at Aldana’s pit after the races for autographs and stories from the past. Many asked when AHRMA is coming back. One thing is for sure, Lakeside Speedway will be on the calendar in 2021. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped put on a great event. Be sure to mark your calendar for MotoFest! Don’t miss AHRMA’s return to Topeka, Kansas, May 28-30, 2021.

TOOLBOX TIPS
BY: JOE W. KOURY
RATTL-IN THE CAGE Well, it’s not really a cage, more like a makeshift paint booth for emptying rattle cans. Now I’m no formally trained painter by any means but I have figured out how to positively adjust my racing budget by refurbing the bodywork on our motorbikes in-house. Here are some tips on how to do your own (not if, but when the time comes) paint and bodywork conveniently and economically. I painted my first motorcycle fuel tank back in 1970. The US Army Full face respirator and head sock had just drafted one of my best friends and before he departed, he left me his Triumph Trophy TR6C. It needed some paint and I did the best I could at the time. Enough said. Fast-forward to modern times when I attempted to shoot the tank on my 350 Sportsman bike the night before leaving for my first AHRMA race. The build lasted until the eleventh hour and I barely had time to make it look decent. I sprayed it in a newspaper-lined corner of the garage. After the last coat was done, a bug flew right into the top of the tank. But even without bugs, there are still contaminants that will find their Glazing putty, applicator and way into fresh paint. I decided sanding block to figure out a way to eliminate this anguish. I built a 4 X 4 X 7 cage using 2x2 lumber and wrapped it in 4 MIL plastic sheet, sealing the edges and seams with duct tape. The door has a two-inch wide extended flap along the edges that acts as a secure seal when the door closes with the fan on high. The fan is under the bench/shelf on the right; the filter is on the left, up high on the opposite wall. I place two lights on either side of the shelf and there are a few screw hooks in the ceiling to hang freshly painted parts if I’m shooting multiple components. This apparatus eliminates 99% of the trash that might otherwise float into the wet paint. Painting is the easy part of the process though. Surface preparation is the key to a decent finish. Dents, cracks and flaws are part of any race bike rejuvenation. I use fiberglass mat or cloth and resin to repair cracks in fiberglass, Kitty Hair Bondo to fill larger dents in the fuel tank and Bondo Glazing Putty (only 30

use the type that works with cream hardener) for the smaller imperfections as I get closer to the base coat application. I use 120-, 320- and 400-grit wet or dry sandpaper and sometimes files to work the rough filler down. A flexible sanding pad is a must-have for block sanding the dents, scratches and pits filled with glazing putty and high-build primer. I use Dupli-Color acrylic lacquer primer and base coat. For fiberglass, I spray their adhesion promoter first, followed by the primer within ten minutes. The primer is wet sandable within 30 minutes. Sometimes it takes several attempts at sanding, glazing putty and primer to get the surface smooth enough for the base coat. I sand the primer with 400-grit, clean it with warm soap and water, dry it thoroughly, gently wipe the surface with a tack cloth immediately before spraying the base coat. It goes on with two light coats, waiting 60 seconds in between, followed by three heavier coats, waiting 60 seconds Booth in action in between. I shut the fan off before departing the booth to make sure no contaminants are sucked in through the open door. I use a good pair of goggles and a respirator when I’m spraying the primer and base coat. For graphics or number plate backgrounds, I use 3M Professional masking tape. It is very thin which reduces height of the paint line/edge. Narrow finish tape is also handy for the more intricate graphics lines. The clear coat is more complicated. You must wear the correct suit, gloves and full face respirator to spray the 2K clearcoat. CAUTION: Read the directions carefully and follow them. This stuff is poison so it cannot contact your skin or respiratory system. The 3M suits work well, and you must invest in the proper head gear and gloves. I use the Fairing stand Eastwood 2K clear. It leaves a glassy, professional finish and can be sprayed right onto the base coat without any sanding. I usually apply three coats of clear, waiting about two minutes between coats. I recommend a Freshly Painted Tank little practice spraying the clear to determine how heavily you can apply it before it starts to run. This paint requires no color sanding or polishing after it is applied. It is also race fuel proof. Stickers can be applied to the base coat and the clear sprayed right over them. I build stands/mounts out of wood (which is cleaned and de-splintered since you don’t want wood particles flying around in your paint) for all my body parts. Make sure they are high enough so you can spray under the edges of the parts. Some of my mounts have eyelets for hooks so the part can be hung right after spraying. Racebike rash is inevitable but the repairs are DYI-able. Rattl-in the cage results have been very gratifying for me, and that’s an important aspect of any do-it-yourself undertaking.

Pine Lake Paperclip August 8th, 2020
CJ #110 & David Aldana #13 Photo by: Stephanie Vetterly
2020 VMC Frames AHRMA National Vintage Dirt Track Series By: David Aldana Ashtabula, Ohio, at Pine Lake Raceway, could not have been a better facility. It had a KOA, AAA+ look about it with an excellently manicured grass surface shaded by big mature trees. Bud Fischer, the promoter, put his best foot forward to accommodate the flat track racers who made the trip. Even with all the virus situations influencing people's travels, it was all done with the utmost in precautions. The racing surface was smooth and fast; the layout was what we racers refer to as a "paperclip." With the promoter anxious to have another race next year, he has committed to bringing in the corners. That will help and make it easier to gear for the track. Charlie Williams took home the top honors in two classes, the Super Singles and Seventies Singles 50+. Tuner, Tim Bolin, and Charlie are an unbeatable team this year. Beno once again led the pack to take the Sportsman 750 and Dinosaur classes. A rider named "CJ" #110 won the Sportsman 250 class.

2020 Hagerty AHRMA National Cross Country Series Ashtabula, OH, 8/8-9/2020 Author: Joshua Schucker
Terry Cunningham Photo by: Joe Spayd
The Hagerty National Cross Country series wrapped up its
mid-season tour through the northeastern part of the country in early August. After stops in Pennsylvania and Maryland, rounds seven and eight took place at the historic Pine Lake Raceway just southeast of Ashtabula, Ohio. While it has only been three years since Dennis and David Brown connected Pine Lake’s owner, Bud Fischer, with Becky Hayes and the AHRMA Cross Country family, this pristine facility has been hosting off-road events for over fifty years. Already, in just three events, this weekend is becoming a “can’t miss” on the national schedule. One look around the approximately two hundred-acre facility quickly illustrates why the event and location has prospered. The most prominent feature at Pine Lake is obviously its large dirt oval and infield TT track surrounded by guardrails and grandstands. It lends a certain professional, “big league” feel to the place. The parking area is ample, shaded, clean, and welcoming for weekend camping. There is a lake that guests are welcome to use for swimming, although below seasonal temperatures for much of the weekend didn’t lend itself to swimming but was very welcome for racing! Miles of established trails can be found in the surrounding forest. Combined, the amenities are impressive and make for an enjoyable and comfortable experience. 38
WWW.AHRMA.ORG
While David and Dennis Brown made the first contact to get Pine Lake on the schedule, their involvement did not stop there. The Browns, along with Jerry Graskauskas, are primarily responsible for the layout of the nearly five-mile course. They were also among the first folks to greet you, as the Browns accompanied Tim Grow, James Smith, and Bill Ryburn in completing all the tech inspections for the weekend’s entrants. After which, sign-up was a visit and warm welcome with national cross country coordinator, Becky Hayes, and her capable assistant, Joe Cole. And of course, make sure to give a wave and nod of thanks to the scoring and flagging crew of Mike and Connie Zdybak and Chris Saylor. As always, it is because of these fine volunteers that we are all able to enjoy this sport. An emphatic “thank you” to all of them! Saturday morning’s sight lap was to be the first taste of the course, which would be the same each day. Dennis, Dave, and Jerry did a tremendous job utilizing all the elements of the facility to produce a unique and memorable course. Surprisingly, given the proximity to Lake Erie and generally flat topography of the surrounding area, the course made great use of localized elevation changes on the property. The opening grass track section, which wore in tremendously over the weekend to become a bermed treat, led into the first major

elevation change. As the riders entered the wooded area for the first time, they were greeted with a large step-up double jump prior to hitting the trails. Several confident riders were tackling this jump with style, easily clearing the gap and landing smoothly on top. It was a popular location for spectators. This is the first of many motocross type elements found within the wooded area of Pine Lake, which creates a unique layout. Following the step-up, riders were directed into some tight, root laden, freshly cut single track that skirted some of the established ATV width trails on the property. The single track eventually dumped riders into the first of two jaunts down a creek bed where most attempted to weave between the deep spots and avoid becoming waterlogged. Despite the previously mentioned cooler weather, riding generates plenty of heat and the splashes were refreshing for sure! A variety of flowing single track and entertaining MX-ish double track eventually led to the riders climbing from the woods onto the infield TT track and its sweeping turns and gentle jumps. After completing the infield portion, the riders enter turn one of the dirt oval to experience the dirt track feel for nearly two thirds of an entire lap. Flat out and attempting to power slide is an inimitable experience that you will only find at Pine Lake SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020
and will be talking about until next year! Back into the woods for the second creek trip and some more enjoyable trail with elevation changes, and you are through scoring and ready to hit the grass track again.
Vintage Races:
Forty-six riders lined up Saturday morning to kick off the weekend’s action. Since the series moved into the area, it has become clear that Christian Brumbaugh is the man to beat in the Northeast. He rides his Yamaha DT hard, and after four laps he was the first to the flag again for his fifth vintage overall win in a row. In his first national ever, Aaron Good would take his Suzuki to a second overall followed by John Fischer on a Husqvarna. Good would also capture the Sportsman 200 Expert class win over Harrison Walkama (Honda) and Tim Grow (Husky). These three riders would all place in the top six overall in a remarkably strong class. Chris Gillespie would put his number three Can-Am into the lead on lap two and hold on to take top honors in Vintage 50+ Intermediate over Kevin Marshall and John Denunzio on a CZ. Polly Grow would finish just ahead of Denunzio for a solid top-25 overall finish. In doing so, she claimed the class win over Becky Hayes in Post Vintage Women’s Jerry Graskauska Photo by: Joe Spayd Intermediate as well.

As riders lined up for Sunday’s race, one had to wonder if Brumbaugh could make it six in a row… no. After hanging onto Brumbaugh’s tail for two laps Saturday before failing to finish, Brian Grove would start the same way Sunday by hounding Brumbaugh throughout the race. Grove would push his Husqvarna to the quickest lap of the race when it counted most and took over the lead on the last lap. Brumbaugh would follow across the line in second while Harrison Walkama took third. The action in the Vintage 60+ Intermediate class was red-hot all weekend. Despite closing the gap from nearly two minutes to just seven seconds, Mark Schwab would settle for runner-up to winner Bill Harrison on Saturday. However, Schawb would carry the momentum into Sunday and take the class gapping second place Terry Koziara by over five minutes. Dennie Mitchell would improve on Saturday’s fourth place finish by landing on the podium in third. Another strong finish by Pamela Grow was overshadowed by Samantha Valish claiming top woman honors with a magnificent ride to seventeenth overall and a Vintage Women’s Intermediate win on her Penton, surely making the day’s spectators, John and Jack, proud. Jerry Allison would scream his race-modified Hodaka to the Sportsman 100 Expert win Sunday for a doublewin weekend. Ken Cichy would accomplish the same feat in Sportsman 200 Intermediate by leading every lap on his Suzuki and garnering a top-10 overall on Sunday.
Post Vintage Races:
In a field loaded with potential overall winners—Fischer, Farris, Ashcraft, Brumbaugh, Grove, etc.—it is still hard to bet against number 4x. Four-time AMA National Enduro Champion, Terry Cunningham, was on the starting line with his trademark Husqvarna, and you knew he was going to be in the hunt. Despite starting from the back row (of 55 riders!) in an Early-Modern support class, John Ashcraft was not to be denied Saturday. To make up for his poor starting position, he unleashed his 1990 CR500 on a first lap sprint that set the quickest lap time of the event by far and pushed him into the lead. Cunningham would run Ashcraft’s pace or better throughout the remaining laps, but the margin built early would carry Ashcraft to the overall win. Terry would hold on for second over fellow Husqvarna rider Brian Grove. Terry would win the battle in the Post Vintage 60+ Expert class while Perry Hodges, second, took comfort in knowing that the only guy who could beat him is a legend. Jerry Graskauskas would take third in the class, and Brian Ashcraft, knowing better than to interrupt a Terry, Perry, Jerry top three, would settle for fourth. Perry and his IT200 would benefit from Terry picking on the younger kids Sunday, as he switched to the Post Vintage 50+ class, handing Perry the top spot with the Hondas of Graskauskas and Ashcraft behind. Chris Gillespie would follow up his morning success with a Post Vintage 50+ Intermediate class win riding a clean Yamaha TT. Robert Ragon took second on his Husqvarna just ahead of Michael Miller on an early water-cooled KTM. James Smith would lead all four laps over Beno Rodi in Historic 200 Expert action. Robert Lisey proved septuagenarians still “got it” by besting Donald Harless in Post Vintage 70+ Intermediate on Saturday and go on to do the same Sunday, as would Fred Veator in the 40

Post Vintage 70+ Expert class.
An equally strong turnout of 51 riders lined up for Sunday’s race, excited by the previous day’s close races. When the checkered flag fell, the racing experienced on Sunday was even better. John Ashcraft was unable to get an early jump on the field this day, but he did settle into third early on just behind Terry. Brian Grove jumped to the early lead, but Cunningham was stalking mere seconds behind for three laps until making the move on lap four with Ashcraft right behind. Grove would eventually finish in fourth as Brumbaugh slid by as well. The crafty Cunningham did enough to keep Ashcraft at bay and secure the overall win. Aaron Good wrapped up a strong weekend with fifth overall on a twin-shock XR500. Michael Wright put his Suzuki in the lead early both days and did not relent in taking the Historic Open Intermediate win Saturday and Sunday over Husqvarna-mounted Michael Cotopolis. Ed Klinger was in the perfect position to take advantage of Saturday winner Joshua Schucker’s early flat tire. After mechanical problems of his own Saturday, Klinger claimed redemption as he and his XR200 took the lead and made it stick despite a mid-race challenge from Joe Spayd II. Both days provided excellent action on a memorable weekend with perfect weather. And if you thought you were going fast around the dirt oval, David Aldana brought his traveling crew of crazy-fast dirt-trackers to Pine Lake for an AHRMA National Dirt Track event Saturday afternoon. A completely different dynamic of racing, it was thrilling to spectate and a perfect addition to an already great event. And, if you still hadn’t experienced enough by the end of Sunday’s Post Vintage race, the AHRMA Great Lakes region hosted an afternoon motocross race that utilized the TT course and the grass track. Cumulatively, the Pine Lake event is wonderful, and reinforced its standing as a “can’t miss.” Plus, it is always amazing to rub elbows with motorcycling royalty as Terry Cunningham, John and Jack Penton, David Aldana, and others prove they are just cool as you’d think they are. Again, many thanks to the volunteers who make it all work, especially Becky Hayes, as she travels the country facilitating all the national events. Thanks to the Fischer family for allowing AHRMA to become a part of Pine Lake’s historic roster of events. & August 23, 2020 2020 Redwood Engineering AHRMA National Vintage Motocross Series Vintage, Race Tech Post Vintage, and Next Gen Motocross By: Jason Colón Promoted by the Rocky Mountain Vintage Motocross Club, the AHRMA Motocross National at Lakeview Motorsports Park in Ordway, Colorado, may have been added to the schedule last-minute, but it proved to be a worthwhile points-scoring opportunity for those who attended. You know the phrase, "If it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all. Well, this was kind of like that, only better. Part of what made the Lakeview National possible were the Covid-19-related cancelations of the Nationals that were to be held at Two 42

Rivers, in Milliken, Colorado, on the same date and at Mill Creek in Combs, Arkansas, on what would have been the following weekend after the Lakeview race. The Corona Virus pandemic has caused a chaotic pattern of race cancellations, rescheduled race dates, and changing venues that has become the norm for AHRMA's 2020 National Motocross Series. So, in this shortened racing season, capitalizing on any opportunity to actually have a race has become essential. Although this race may have come together last-minute, AHRMA could not have had better partners in making it happen. In the midst of a severe heat wave, it didn't take long for the one hundredplus-degree temperature to dry out the track and racers alike. Riders

accustomed to dust covered, hard pack had an advantage on race day. Exacerbating the heat was the jampacked, one-day schedule, the only viable way to hold the race in this unorthodox season, but any racing is still better than no racing Several of the Vintage and Post Vintage classes were closely contested. The Vintage 60+ had a stacked field with winner, Trey Jorski, cutting some of the fastest laps of the weekend. Fred Hoess was his usual blazing-fast self, riding an enduro, Fred's Husqvarna 250 WR bested all purpose-built Post Vintage motocrossers. Starting nearly a lap down after missing his motoone gate, Hoess managed to win his class and almost take the overall moto win against several 500-class bikes. team, Eric and Debbie Benson, both won their Post Vintage classes, Debbie going 1-1 in Women's Novice and Eric taking the Post Vintage 50+ Intermediate win on his CanAm. Charlene Campbell scored the Women's Expert win. Unfortunately, Suzy Barr Fann Moody didn't make the start; Suzy certainly would have given Charlene the serious competition she desired. Mike Parker wasn't
exhibiting any disappointment in having to cancel his Mill Creek National. Riding three bikes in four classes spanning Vintage to NextGen, racer 15p exhibited great sportsmanship and a congenial, fun-loving attitude all day despite the heat. Thank you to AHRMA Trustee, Kelly Shane, Executive Director, Curt Comer, and Off-Road Director, Anthony Paul, for making the trip and turning some quality laps on track. See you in Colorado next year!
Vintage 60+ Experts Chet Malito (38m) and Trey Jorski (j49) may have led the pack but only Intermediate Eddie Parks (859) was smart enough to beat the heat by bringing an umbrella girl to the starting gate. His wife, great job Deidra Parks! Image Credit - Jason Colรณn SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020

Making History Cecil Sandford made history as the first rider to win a World Championship riding an MV Agusta. Now, at the age of 91, he is motorcycling’s oldest-surviving World Champion and still has vivid memories of Grand Prix racing in the 1950s.

n Wednesday, June 11th, 1952, Cecil Sandford started something very big. He scored the first World Championship race victory for MV Agusta, the marque that went on to become the most successful manufacturer in Grand Prix racing, with 275 race wins and 75 Rider and Constructor world titles. Even now, almost half a century after By MickMV’s last race, only Honda, YaOfield maha, and Aprilia have achieved more Grand Prix success. Two months after Sandford took MV’s first classic win in the Ultra-Lightweight TT, he clinched the 125cc World Championship, MV’s first. Five years later he won his second World Championship, in the 250cc class, with rival Italian brand Mondial. During his 15-year career, the Gloucestershire, England rider had factory contracts with AJS, Velocette, MV, DKW, and Mondial. He raced against Geoff Duke, John Surtees, and Mike Hailwood,

undreds of racers from North America and other parts of the world converged on Daytona International Speedway to compete for race wins and National Championships at the 36th annual Championship Cup Series (CCS) Race of Champions, featuring the final rounds of the AMA-sanctioned American Sportbike Racing Association (ASRA) National Sprint and Team Challenge series. On the line were eight National Championships in the ASRA Sprint Series Presented by Pirelli Tire, decided by points accumulated over a seven-round season; four National Championships in the ASRA Team Challenge Series Presented by Michelin Tire, decided by points accumulated during an eight-round season; and 54 CCS National Championships, which were decided by winner-take-all sprint races. The Race of Champions also included two MotoGirlGT exhibition races, featuring only female competitors. After a full day of mostly dry practice time and the Team Hammer Advanced Riding School on Friday, racing began in wet conditions on Saturday; the track dried out later in the afternoon and

Former Moto2 World Championship rider and 2008 125cc Grand Prix World Championship runner-up Simone Corsi rode a Pirelli-fitted Squid Hunter Racing Yamaha YZF-R6 in the ASRA Team Challenge race as part of a last-minute deal put together as a possible precursor to a Daytona 200 effort. The 32-year-old Italian took the overall lead on lap 30 of the race and turned laps as quick as 1:53.485 to pull away and claim the overall and GTU class victories by 13.869 seconds. “I love this track,” Corsi said in English from the podium. “The race was very difficult, but I enjoy it very much. I want to thank my team. They did a great job.” West Side Performance’s Christian Miranda, age 19, raced closely with Corsi but fell behind after the first and only round of pit stops. Miranda, however, held on to finish second overall and in the GTU class on his Yamaha YZF-R6. Series regular Lloyd Bay-
ley finished third overall and first in the GTO category on his BMW S1000RR. Jinba Ittai Motorsport’s Joel Lenk crossed the finish line fourth overall and second in the GTO class, and that was enough to claim the 2019 ASRA Team Challenge Overall and GTO Championships. Jinba Ittai Motorsport edged out seven-time ASRA Team Challenge Champion Grease Monkey Racing (Eric Helmbach/Stephen Hoffman) for both titles. Grease Monkey Racing finished the race sixth overall and third in GTO. JoeyO Racing (Robert Bettencourt/Sean Osowski) took 18th overall and won in the GT Lights category on a Yamaha FZ07, while fourth place in the GT Lights division was enough for Racing 101 (Doug Stufflebeam/ Gino Angella/Mark Evry/Joseph Ciesnik) to secure the GT Lights Team Challenge Championship. Britain’s greatest riders of all time. And he won the race in which Hailwood made his debut, at Oulton Park in April, 1957. “Surtees was one of the best riders I ever watched,” recalls Sandford, a chipper nonagenarian with an amazing memory for the first decade of motorcycle World Championship racing. “And Duke was always a step ahead. He was the only bloke I ever saw drift a motorbike, at Monza.” Sandford started racing as a teenager, just after the Second World War, after converting his Triumph road bike for scrambling, trials, and grass-track duties. Next came road racing, usually at disused wartime bases like Haddenham, Dunholme, and Blandford Forum. He made his TT debut in the 1948 Clubmans Junior, although he very nearly didn’t make it to the Isle of Man. “We were taking my Velocetteto Douglas from Liverpool, with me, my mum and my dad in an MG with the Velo on a trailer.
