welcome to AHRMA Mag

H

owdy readers. After an unusually cool and rainy July here in Texas, the weather has returned to normal. It’s hot, just like the AHRMA racing events across the country. We hope you enjoy our coverage of these events in this issue, some a bit overdue, a result of content overload. The July issue was ‘detained’ for a couple weeks due to a nationwide shortage of paper, and this set us back in our efforts to bring you the August edition. I just received my July copy, and I must say AHRMA MAG’s new Associate Editor and Page Layout Designer, Stephanie Vetterly, did a bangup job on the pages. We responded to your requests to eliminate squinting and increased the font size a tick. We are hopeful to get the magazine back on a normal release schedule by September (if the paper supply is not interrupted again). We are all suffering the heavy heart syndrome after hearing about the passing of one of our AHRMA brethren, Luke Conner. David Stark’s obit summed his contributions up nicely. He was a friend, a competitor, a giver, personified the ‘AHRMA family,’ and will be sorely missed at AHRMA events. The AHRMA MAG is on the hunt for off-road and roadrace content. We need a My Garage story and some Toolbox Tips content. If you have a stash of vintage motorbikes or race bikes sitting in an appealing-to-gearheads hangout, we’d love to share it with our readers in our ‘My Garage’ column. ‘Toolbox Tips’ can be a presentation based on hand tools, machine tools, shop techniques, tuning tips, safety (in the shop and on the track), time-saving devices, paint/ fiberglass work, etc. In addition to those two columns, we also like to feature special interest stories about AHRMA riders, tuners, builders and restorers. AHRMA volunteers make our fun-filled weekends possible. The AHRMA MAG’s ‘Volunteer Spotlight’ can always use a few photos, or even a story about an offroad or roadrace volunteer. Or you can submit photos of volunteers in action, working their magic keeping events running smoothly. We also need volunteers to cover events and create race recaps. We usually have photographers at every event, but many times come up short with adequate race write-ups. We’d love to paste your name on one of our pages. Let us know in advance if you can cover an event.

REMEMBERING CARLSBAD RACEWAY by Eddie Frank, AHRMA Life Member

P

reserving motorcycle racing history is something we are all a part of by being AHRMA members. There is an effort currently underway to preserve the memory of the famous Carlsbad Raceway, the majority of which has been swallowed up by a business park. Its natural terrain motocross course became the American leg of the Motocross World Championships beginning in the early ‘70s. The Carlsbad USGP brought the Europeans to American soil as the sport was growing here, and the hillsides overflowed with motocross fans trying to see the stars they had seen in magazines. I was fortunate to spectate the very first several USGP races, then race motocross there as an amateur, and to be there on its final day in 2004 as the bulldozers sat on the canyon rim waiting to begin leveling for the business park. What remains today is just a small portion of the lower canyon, overgrown with brush but familiar to those of us who remember its layout. The track was very rarely prepared for amature races (usually just hosed down), was hard pack, blue groove and brutal on both bike and body. Even when groomed for the USGP, it would quickly get ugly. Most Europeans vocally expressed disgust with it compared to the other 10 races in Europe. Although, Gerritt Wolsink seemed to have it mastered, and became known as the "King of Carlsbad."

that remains in the canyon. It is being built through donations. You can get a personalized engraved brick to be permanently laid at the monument when constructed. You get a 4 X 8 brick with three lines and twenty-one characters per line for a total of $250. Search "Carlsbad Raceway Monument Project" for details, an artist's rendering of the overlook, and to see what your brick will look like with the engraving you choose. And for those of you unfamiliar with Carlsbad, get the movie ‘Carlsbad USGP 1980-One Day of Magic’ for the incredible filming of the best race and story ever to happen there.

Carlsbad Raceway's memory is to be preserved with a proposed monument overlooking that little portion

Call for Help

As always, AHRMA events could not happen without the help of our volunteers. This year we will have two days of trials at the Barber Vintage Festival, and we are looking for checkers. If you are able to score a section on Friday and/or Sunday, please forward your name to me at grafoster@hotmail.com Working a section means you will be in the woods for approximately three hours. It is a laid back/low pressure job that is lots of fun and no experience is required (pre-event instruction will be provided). As a reward, you will get FREE ENTRY to the Festival for the weekend. Please know that if you do sign up, we will be depending on you to be there! For those of you who have ridden at Barber in years past, you may be familiar with the wonderful, whimsical and unique special awards fabricated by the talented Bill Catogni. This year’s event sees the return of his trophies for special classes such as farthest traveled, best (vintage) dressed, crowd favorite and more! So dapper yourself up, bring a positive attitude and have fun in the woods. Thank you and look forward to seeing you soon. GRAHAM FOSTER

CATCHING UP WITH CURT AHRMA continues to gain momentum as race entries have increased across all disciplines and total memberships are up 453 since the beginning of the year. This is welcome news coming off a challenging COVID year! July has been a busy month for the Comers, starting with a Trials School for AHRMA members at our property in TN taught by six-time National Champion Ryan Young. The following weekend I participated in the VMX national at Aztec Raceway in Colorado Springs. It has been over 40 years since I was last at this track! Next up was the AHRMA Classic MotoFest™ at Monterey (Laguna Seca) which boasted record Roadrace entries, a spectacular natural terrain VMX track crafted by trustees Kelly Shane and Rob Poole, and a popular trial designed and administered by the Ridge Runners Motorcycle Club. There were many spectators in attendance with lots of fan experience activities. Significant momentum was gained for an even bigger and better MotoFest next year on the same weekend. Also in July, AHRMA’s Cross Country riders headed to Shady Acres in Maryland for one our favorite events. Additionally, there was a Dirt Track double header in Southern California at Perris Speedway and Lake Elsinore. We are excited to once again be serving our west coast dirt track members. We welcome Jim Doyle onboard as AHRMA’s new Business Development Manager. Many already know Jim from his many years of AHRMA involvement and his leadership as Event Manager for the successful AHRMA Classic MotoFest™ in the Heartland earlier this year. Jim’s professional experience and industry involvement makes for a good fit as we position AHRMA for exciting things to come. Richard Brodock has enthusiastically embraced the initiative to reignite AHRMA’s Dirt Track program. Accordingly, he has been named DT Interim Coordinator and is leading the charge at some very high profile events gaining exposure for things to come. 8

Pastor Steve Hudson has been named AHRMA’s official Race Chaplain and is on-site at all Roadrace and select Off-Road events to care for members as needed or requested, as well as nondenominational chapel services at our events on Sundays. Pastor Steve was Race Chaplain for AMA Supercross for many years and continues to serve several prominent NASCAR teams. Although AHRMA is currently between Roadrace Directors, our experienced and dedicated staff have stepped it up to be sure our events go off in the safe and quality fashion members expect. I can’t thank you all enough for making this transaction as painless as possible for me and Dewanna. As a reminder, AHRMA is a member-owned not-for-profit volunteer based organization. Without the giving hearts of volunteers, we would not be able to provide the benefits members expect. Be sure to thank those who serve. With the MotoFest initiatives and a move toward more self-promoted Off-Road events, the task of recruiting, organizing and recognizing our volunteers has become even more important. On yet another note, even though he will be competing on a modern bike this time, AHRMA regular Fred Hoess will be competing in his 27th ISDE this September in Italy. Fred was the outright winner of the inaugural Vintage Trophy Event in 2016 riding a 1983 Husqvarna. Please join me in cheering him on for another gold medal as he will be representing AHRMA at this year’s ISDE. CURTIS E. COMER AHRMA Executive Director 931.308.0338 curt.comer@ahrma.org

STILL CRAZY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS... This has been a crazy busy year with a lot of AHRMA members traveling to get to some of AHRMA's special events. Personally, we traveled for almost four straight weeks between July and August, crossing the country twice during that time and driving through 23 states. It was REALLY good to get home even though we hated missing the Blackhawk Farms back-to-back with Gingerman Raceway.

As we approach our Barber Vintage Festival event, if you plan to compete in any of the events scheduled, you need to be aware that we will be providing a list of pre-entries from each discipline to Barber's marketing team to include in their souvenir program. This will allow attendees to have a general idea as to what is happening where and when. So... down to business. I would like every single member who competes in AHRMA, whether you will be at Barber or not, to do the following as soon as possible: 1.

Sign in to ahrma.motorsportreg.com

2.

Click on "My Account"

3.

Click on the profile image that has your name beneath it

As the roadrace competitors are aware, Roadracing World publishes full results from each of our race events on roadracingworld.com. What I've found when preparing the roadracing results for Roadracing World's press release is that quite a number of our roadracers do NOT have all the information on their vehicles.

4.

If your vehicle is in your "garage" but isn't fully listed with Year, Make and Model, delete it and create a new vehicle and make sure this information is included. For the roadracers this will require that you add your transponder number as well.

Every vehicle in your MotorsportReg "garage" should have Year, Make AND Model specified. In addition, model information often is not correct (i.e., cb or Cb instead of CB when specifying CB175, CB160, CB350, etc.). Please note, this issue is not restricted to roadracers, this situation exists across all disciplines.

5.

While you are in your account, please make sure that your personal information appears with upper and lower case information, for example "Your Name" - not "YOUR NAME" and not "your name" for all of your information, including "City." "Hometown, State" is something we share in Roadracing World results, and we will also be sharing it for the Barber Souvenir program.

It's been a few AHRMA MAG issues since I last submitted a column and it's been a nice break, but I decided it was time I put one together as there are some items I want to share with our competing members.

All this being said, if you want your name to appear in the Barber Vintage Fest program, PLEASE PRE-ENTER! CINDY MCLEAN AHRMA Communications cindy.mclean@ahrma.org

A PUBLIC SERVICE As a public service, I would like to re-introduce AHRMA's 'Eligibility Request Form.’ This form can be very useful to any racing member who is innovative and likes to gain a competitive advantage, legally. We all know that one of the ways to winning a motorcycle race can be having a faster, lighter bike with the best handling and braking. Often, we conjure up ideas, even fantasies as to how we can gain such an advantage. I know I do. Posing the question of legal eligibility on Facebook may get you good, or not so good, opinions. Next best thing is to contact the appropriate AHRMA Rules and Eligibility Committee. This will get you a more official opinion, but still only an opinion. If and when called out on the subject at the track, these opinions make for good debate but are not 'self-proving.’ By holding a written determination in your hand, it is very unlikely, if even possible, that the referee will disagree with your position. How do we get such a written decision to carry with us to the track? Thought you'd never ask. The Eligibility Request Form is to be used for determining the eligibility of:

Three photos must be uploaded through the form—one of each side, and one clearly showing the engine and submitted through the form found at www.ahrma.org/eligibility-request-form. The form must be submitted 21 days before the event in which you want to compete (please allow longer if possible). You will be notified by email whether your eligibility has been granted or denied. The decision of the Rules and Eligibility Committee will be valid until the conclusion of the next full rules change cycle. Lasting resolution and inclusion of the determination in the Handbook must be made by the member (not AHRMA staff) by submitting a Rules Change Proposal during the specified rules change proposal period. The Eligibility Request form can be found here: https://www.ahrma.org/eligibility-request-form/ Happy Racing, ARTHUR KOWITZ Chairman of the Board

A) A motorcycle not specified on the class list (example: a one-off, a motorcycle from another class, a motorcycle that might meet the definition of the class but unmentioned on the class list). B) A modification to an eligible motorcycle when the mod is unmentioned in the existing rules. C) A motorcycle modification is questionable, requiring interpretation of an existing rule. 10

with the always entertaining and competitive CB160 Le Mans start race. Rob Hall and Chris Akaydin traded wins on their Honda twins; Rob won on Saturday by just over a second and Chris nipped Rob by half a wheel on Sunday. Keith Hamilton wasn’t far behind them claiming third spot on day two. The fast guys were next with Mark Heckles (Ducati NCR) snagging the BOT 1 win over Gary Orr (BMW R9T Racer) and turning the weekend’s fastest lap at 1:27.857. On Sunday, Orr won over Dakota Wolter. Alan Perry crossed the finish line first in Formula Vintage with a narrow threesecond margin over Martin Jarusek (second) and Kevin Rammer. On Sunday it was Perry, Rammer and Mark Morrow.

But this was not just a motorcycle race, it was the Ninth Annual AHRMA Vintage Motorcycle Festival and Swap Meet with Friday Night Bike Night and Bike Show at the Finish Line Pub.

Michael Murray won the Sportsman 350 race both days by seven second margins over David Miller on Saturday and Eric “Ake” Smith Sunday. The battle for third came down to a scant .028 seconds with Chris Jackson barely edging John Waverka for that last podium spot. The sprint for second place was even closer in Sunday’s Sound of Singles 2 race. Marc Purslow won with Adrian Jasso taking second place over Dave Frick by .001! Christian Jensen (Ducati 888) and Michael Platt (Kawasaki Z7) went bar-to-bar in Next Gen Superbike both days and on Sunday, Matt Esterline (Honda CB750) locked up with Jeff Hargis (Yamaha XS650) for the narrow win

he venue shifted from the Heartland to just shy of the South New Jersey shore for rounds eleven and twelve of the Bridgestone Tires AHRMA National Historic Roadrace Series. The 2.25-mile, 12-turn “Thunderbolt” racecourse is located adjacent to the Millville Airport. Beginning in 1941, this was the site of the U.S. Army Airfield Gunnery School for fighter pilots flying the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft. The track was named after this famous WWII aircraft. There were plenty of roadrace pilots anxiously awaiting their shot at the track which is one of my favorites. My reaction to cutting laps there was always, “Wow. What a brilliant layout. Genius.”

On Friday, twelve students successfully completed the AHRMA Academy of Roadracing (AAR) under the tutelage of capable rider and instructor, Mark Morrow. Mark enthusiastically shared the AAR student numbers so far this year: Roebling Road Raceway 13; Carolina Motorsports Park 23; Streets of Willow 12; Willow Springs Raceway 6; Heartland Motorsports Park 19, New Jersey Motorsports Park 12, Laguna Seca 20. Over 100 new racers. Welcome aboard. We were not able to make the trip this year, but a few riders did mention there were more than a few mosquitos to battle. There were some close battles on the tarmac both days beginning

MOTORSPORTS PARK in Sportsman 750. This has been quite a rivalry all season long.

One of my favorite classes to watch is Open Twostroke as the riders skillfully control the powerbands of these high-horsepower machines. Ralph Staropoli (Honda RS250R) took the win on Saturday over Brian Surtees and Greg Glevicky, both on Yamaha TZ250s. His clutch succumbed to repeated red flag restarts on Sunday resulting in a Glevicky, Adrian Jasso (2017 Suter), Dave Frick Yamaha TZ250) finishing order. Clint Austin beat Tim Nelson in both Sound of Thunder races by less than two seconds. Brian Lowe had his work cut out for him Sunday barely edging Kevin Greimel in Sound of Singles 1. Karl Smolenski and Bill Doran mixed it up on their electron-powered racers in the Formula Lightning class separated by less than a second on Sunday, Smolenski the victor. Tim Joyce (driver) and Renee Schuelke (passenger) won both days in the Super Vintage SC2 Sidecar race. There were quite a few entries in the Classic Big Wheel Sidecar class. Byron P. Hannah II (driver) and Adam Bower (passenger) won Saturday’s race with Eric Fink (driver) and Samantha Fink (passenger) taking Sunday’s win. Saturday’s Formula 500 race was

a classic two-stroke twin (RD400 Yamaha) against inline four (CB550 Honda). Mark Morrow’s Yamaha took the hard-fought win over Martin Morrison’s Honda by 1.9 seconds. David Miller and Michael Murray duked it out for six laps in the Sportsman 500 class with Murray coming up a wheel short at the finish on Saturday. The 2021 featured Vintage Cup Race, 500 Premier, has been competitive this year with several different winners on a variety of machines. Tony Read rode Andy Findling’s 1961 BSA Gold Star to victory over the Seely G50s of Helmi Niederer and Brian Larrabure on Saturday. Read would finish second behind Tim Joyce on the Maurice Candy 1961 Norton Summerfield Manx on Sunday with Neiderer third. Eighteen riders lined up for the Sound of Thunder 3 ABOVE: Michael Perry (417) chased by Steve Massey (10), Michael Shumaker (703), Sakis Vasilopoulos (516), Keith Hamilton (265), John McCarty (928), Charles Miller (88) in 200GP Plus action

race on Saturday, sixteen on Sunday, for the clash of Suzuki SV650s. Daniel Miller took top honors both days over Dakota Wolter. Chris Akaydin chased Rob Hall around Thunderbolt for several laps in the 200GP Plus race that Hall won by two seconds. (There were 20 bikes on the grid for this race.) Those guys are setting the small-bore bar pretty high this year. Andrew Townsend (1950 Vincent Comet) took the Class C Footshift win over Dave Tompkins (1948 Vincent Comet) by just .003 seconds on Saturday. Now that’s a photo finish. Bob Demetrius won both Formula 250 races on his Honda CB350 over Eric Cook’s Honda CL350 and Steve Decamp’s Honda CB400F. The 250GP race was a Honda twin vs. Harley single affair. Dave Roper (1967 Harley-Davidson CRTT) barely beat Chris Akaydin (1970 Honda SL175) on Saturday.

race, the 1981 Ducati Pantah of David Eulberg nipped the 1982 Honda CB650SC of Kevin Rammer. Dakota Wolter took wins both days in Battle of the Twins 2 on his Ducati 800SS beating Tony Prust (Ducati Hypermotard 796) Saturday and Clint Austin (Ducati Monster) on Sunday. And last, but not least, the Next Gen Superbike lightweight class. Phillip Chovnick (Kawasaki EX500) snagged a close win over Gary DiPietro (Yamaha FZR400RR) with Jonathan Hollingsworth and Rick Crespo separated by a half second fighting for the final podium step, both on Yamaha FZR400RRs.

Brain Larrabure and Jeff Nelson kept it interesting in Next Gen Superbike 2, Larrabure a tick quicker at the line. Nelson won handily over Benjamin Baker on Sunday. Saturday’s Next Gen Superbike Middleweight race was a thriller with Jonathan Hollingsworth coming up just short of Rick Patrolia at the finish. Patrolia won over Hollingsworth by a larger margin on Sunday. In the Vintage Superbike Middleweight 14

ith the 2021 racing schedule in full mode this year one of the highlights of the spring would be a trip back to the Ozark Mountain National Forest and Mill Creek Motorsports Park for the Redwood Engineering AHRMA National Vintage Motocross Series, Race Tech AHRAM National Post Vintage Motocross Series and AHRMA Next Gen Motocross Series. Rain was the dominant discussion leading up to race day and not “if” it would rain but how much was the answer everyone was seeking. The forecast was decent as an indication of a couple of inches rain was to be expected, which to a motocross track is like having a good water truck. So much for weather forecasters as late Thursday night and most of Friday the rain never ceased. The rainbow to this story was while the very nice motocross layout was partially under water, there is a nice lush green grassy hill on an adjacent property that was utilized for part of the motocross section of the previous weekend ISDE/T Reunion Ride. AHRMA member Rick Owens is the property owner and allowed us to utilize this property to execute our vintage motocross program. This rainy weekend allowed us to run on one of the finest natural terrain pieces of land many of us thought we would never have such an opportunity to put a bike on. It was stunning and steep. The track meandered to the top of the property and snaked its way back down and up the hill eventually into the flat pasture of the track. Such great fortune this was available for AHRMA racers.

Onto racing! With a slight delay to allow the course to dry out, race two provided great action. A combined gate of Premier Lightweight Intermediates, 40+ Intermediates, and the large 60+ Intermediates group, the crowd was entertained with plenty of action and position changes in each moto. Gary Davis, Wesley Wallace, Chris Dublin, and James Golliher of Toledo, OH, led this packed gate for much of the race with Davis taking the moto one win in the 60+ group and Golliher first in the 40+ grouping. Moto two had plenty of great racing and Golliher jumped to the lead and held the pack off for a few laps, but it was Laporte, TX, racer Bill Fenner taking over on lap three, then subsequently, lap four found Davis in the lead. It was a dog fight to the last lap as Fenner and Dublin both worked their way past the always fast Davis. Sam Huggins put in a great ride as he worked his way past Golliher and the win in the 40+ Intermediate class and with a 1-3 finish Gary Davis won the 60+ Intermediate with Dublin taking second and Fenner third on the day. Daniel Beher won the Premier Lightweight Intermediate class. Our big Novice gate had Mike Gray shining on his CZ as he dominated all the other Novice riders. Gray, from Newton, KS, had a 1-1 finish to win the Classic 125 Novice with Jon Varvil edging out Michael Collier for second place. John Nelson ran well today by running second overall in this combined class gate and won the Sportsman Novice. Steve Clark showed some speed also during his ride and won the Vintage Open Age Novice. Many of these riders

have not experienced running through a relatively long water section in a long time, or possibly ever, and it was quite interesting to watch the Novice class approach to it and you could see who had more experience with running in adverse conditions.

Race four may have been the most spectator-engaged race of the day. It featured the extremely fast Danny Wirt, Bob Bean, Dennis Murphy, Jamie Adams, and Dempsey Elders all on the gate at once. Moto one saw Bob Bean somewhat schooling the riders on how to ride uphill and downhill in sloppy conditions, however race two was a little different. Danny Wirt jumped to an early lead overall, but on lap three Adams passed Wirt on the long uphill section and never looked back. Wirt managed to hold off Murphy and Bean and with a 2-1 finish in the 60+ Expert class. Wirt was the winner with Bean second and Murphy third overall. Adams, racing alone in the 50+ Expert class was the winner there and Elders put in great rides each moto to win the Classic 250 Expert. Other notable race winners were Rick Williams once again showing his dominance in the 70+ Expert class going 1-1 in a stacked class of competition as well as Wade Woodall showing great form against some very good racers in the Classic 125 Expert group on his CZ with a 1-1 finish. Sherri Parker found herself on the motocross track riding her recently acquired Bultaco 125 to win the Women’s Novice class with a 1-2 finish over Yamaha mounted Dallas Winter of Andover, KS, and Linda Dowell from Plano, TX. Pauly Chambers must be getting used to riding in the mud as he beat a very formidable foe being James Golliher in the Sportsman 500 Intermediate class in race eight along with Bob Bean winning the Vintage Open Expert class and Jamie Adams looking spectacular in this race and winning the Sportsman 250 Expert over some fast competition. Race nine had Daniel Behr looking steady as usual winning the Premier Open Twins, Kent Hanson winning the Sportsman 125 Intermediate and Dennis Murphy taking home first in the Sportsman 125 Expert. Saturday evenings at the Mill Creek are always a treat for those at the races. This year it was a burger and dog cookout with a live band in the background. We also celebrated Bob and Sharon Bean’s 50-year wedding anniversary. It was a great time for all to just hang out and catch up as many of us have not seen each other for a while. Sunday’s Post Vintage Racing was a blast. The regular motocross track had dried out enough and except for one

low area in the track you would not have known there was torrential rain the previous five days. Great work to get the track ready for Post Vintage racing. One of the fastest races of the day was race five which has the Post Vintage 50+ Intermediates and Post Vintage 60+ Intermediates on the track together. The 50+ Intermediates saw Brad Nuckolis move his way into first place on lap two of the first moto passing Mark Pope, but in moto two it seemed Brad had some mechanical issues and had to pull off the track during lap three. That gave way to Richard Freund to move into first and Pope in second. It remained that way for the rest of the race and Freund with his 3-1 finish brought home first place. Faster on the track were some of our 60+ Intermediates as Chris Dublin and Kent Hanson swapped moto wins over perennial national class champion John Fedor. Hanson rode great in the second moto and dominated the class and while finishing second in moto one his moto two win gave him the overall and Dublin second and Fedor respectfully third place. The 60+ Experts put on a clinic though in this race Bob Bean and

Greg Prestage battled closely in each moto but Bean is not an easy fellow to beat. Great racing, but Bean takes a 1-1 finish and the first-place trophy. The sixth race of the day was another fast gate which showcased the Grand Prix 250 Expert class. Robert Thornton, Steve Blakely, Keith Canfield, and Mike Parker all put in impressive rides, but it was Thornton taking first place each moto for the win. The racing was tight in that class as usual and fun to watch these experts battle with just a bike length separation for most of the racing. Ultima 250 saw Brian Miller beat out Suzy Moody for first place. The hotly contested Ultima Four-Stroke Intermediate group did not let anyone down either as there was position swapping each moto. Rick Owen may have had a little advantage on this day as it was his property we were racing on, though he was challenged by most of the gate. Owens finished first overall and it was Alan Steele finishing second and Jesse Reid third. Dempsey Elders brought out his beautiful CCM four-stroker and was impressive each moto in winning the Ultima Four-Stroke Expert class and Steve

Sanders looked great on his Yamaha once again to win the Post Vintage 40+ Expert group. Race eleven was a nice showing of Next Gen racing. Next Gen 60+ Intermediate had Jeff Hards going 1-1, beating John Fedor and Wesley Wallace for first place. Scott Sears looked great in winning Next Gen 60+ Expert, but it was our Intermediates in the Next Gen 250 and Current Two-Stroke Unlimited class that outran them all on this day. Pauly Chambers took the Next Gen 1 250 Intermediate first place trophy, but Jack McMillian led each moto start to finish on his modern Yamaha YZ250 to win the Current Two-Stroke Unlimited Intermediate class. Impressive ride. Overall, it was a great weekend with some challenges from Mother Nature but once again we persevered, and some very good racing occurred. Thanks to all the volunteers and workers for making the event run as smoothly as possible under the conditions and a special thanks to Rick Owens for the use of his beautiful hillside pasture. Mike Parker and the Razorback Rider Club put on a great event.

nce again, the town of Reynoldsville, PA, warmly welcomed the AHRMA gang to enjoy its Reynlow Park for a fantastic weekend of racing. While the park contains the typical amenities that you would expect in a community park, such as pavilions, picnic areas, and playgrounds, the large area in the northern part of the park is what makes it unique. This area is reserved almost exclusively for hiking, hunting, and use by off-road motorcycles and ATVs. As has been the case in the past, the yearly vintage events at Reynlow Park are a tremendous fund raiser for the park’s operating and upkeep expenses. It is wonderful to see a community embrace the cultural and economic benefit that comes from catering to off-road enthusiasts. In fact, the Reynlow Park Board of Directors has recently formalized the area as a membership-based off-road riding area known as “Reynlow Riders” to further embrace the off-road community and provide additional resources to maintain and improve the experience in Reynlow. After many years as a regional event, 2021 marks the second consecutive year that Reynlow has stepped up to hosting a Hagerty National Cross-Country Series event. Key to the event’s continued success on the regional and national level is the cooperation and dedication of Reynlow board member Tim Doan, who has consistently been the 20

point man in facilitating the event and is always looking to provide the best experience for the series. After working in a trials course at last year’s event, Tim was hard at work in the months prior to this year’s event to build a motocross track that allowed the inclusion of National Motocross in the 2021 event schedule. Built adjacent to the ample parking/camping area, the motocross track was a winding one-mile beauty planted with fresh grass and incorporating natural terrain with only minor manipulation to jump faces to increase the safety and vintage-friendly nature of the course. There was a tremendous amount of cross-over participation between the cross country and motocross racers, and there was quite a positive buzz vibrating throughout the pits on the MX portion of the event. But, Tim and trial-bosses Mike Zdybak and Randy Marshall were not about to let the motocross track outshine the cross country trail, after all, this location has a reputation of top-notch terrain and layout. With additional support from Craig and Anthony Lowery, Connie Zdybak, Joe Cole, and Becky Schreckenost, the pair of trail bosses set a plan of action that would create two wholly separate and unique courses for each day. Being a site of a former coal mining operation, the level of terrain variety and elevation change present on this site is breath-taking. Mike and Randy took full advantage of the ample acreage to push the courses

(730) Dane Brownawel l into new areas for this year with only a sparse amount of trail re-used from the previous year. While both courses incorporated the fan-favorite hill climb shortly after the starting area, they diverged shortly thereafter. Mike’s Saturday course focused on the western section of the property where long-ago piled mining spoils provide some extreme and entertaining elevation changes. Navigating the peaks and valleys of these piles and incorporating some tight pines, fresh single track, and a grass track, the course measured out at slightly less than four miles. Randy’s trail was laid out to the east for Sunday’s races in a similar area as last year’s day-two course. This area consists of more reclaimed mining areas with a bit less elevation change, but plenty of younger growth vegetation used to install some fresh single track. A couple grass track sections were interspersed among the single track, and in general the course, at over four miles, was a bit more open and faster than Saturday. Reactions to each day’s contest was very enthusiastic with near universal praise of the layout and competitiveness of the courses. Concerns earlier in the week, due to frequent rain showers leading up to the weekend, were relatively unwarranted as the course drained rather well with only minor sections showing significant evidence of the recent rainfall, and dust was of little to no concern. Excellent weather throughout the weekend further showcased the beauty and joy of Reynlow Park. AUGUST 2021

VINTAGE: Thirty-nine riders hit the track on Saturday morning, but none was faster than overall winner Josh Zerance. Once out front on his Can-Am, Josh settled into rock-solid consistency with nearly identical lap times throughout the last three laps to pull away for the win. Mid-Atlantic region head honcho, Dave Kutskel, piloted his Honda to the second overall position and class win in Vintage 50+ Expert over Chris Gillespie, also on a Can-Am, who rounded out the podium in the overall standings. Josh Horvath pushed the envelope of his Intermediate classification with a very strong ride into fifth place overall while taking the victory in Sportsman 200 Intermediate on his rare Yamaha YZ175. Horvath made the move past early leader Grant Reichart for the win while Reichart settled into second followed across the finish line by Suzuki-mounted Ken Cichy. Reichart and Cichy turned the tables on Horvath during Sunday’s race by finishing one-two and shuffling Josh’s YZ back to third. Ed Stagel found himself nearly a full minute ahead of Fred Walker’s Yamaha after lap one on Saturday, but Fred was on the hunt for Stagel’s Husqvarna as he staged a come from behind win with a last lap pass to claim the win. Dave Lyle was right behind Ed in the overall standings to lay claim to the top novice rider just ahead of fellow novice, Dave Leibgold. Each Dave was in command of their class

by winning Post Vintage 60+ Novice and Post Vintage 200 Novice respectively. Leibgold would push himself in day two to claim Sunday’s unofficial top novice distinction. Jenn Smith topped the Women’s Vintage Intermediate class on her way to a weekend sweep on her familiar “3R” Suzuki.

Brian Grove exited Saturday’s race too early for his liking and entered day two determined to salvage a strong finish for the weekend, thereby setting the stage for an epic duel with Zerance for Sunday’s overall. Both riders would take a turn in the lead with never more than two seconds separating them at each appearance through the scoring area. Grove’s Husqvarna charged to the lead on the last lap, and he made it stick leaving Zerance and twenty-seven others behind him. Z erance followed closely behind for the runner-up spot with John Fischer third. Fischer, although never quite close enough to the top two to witness the duel, was flying and took the victory in Vintage 60+ Expert over runner-up Charlie Walker and his MX360. Several riders used strong runs in Sunday’s event to wrap up weekend sweeps including Mike Stivason piloting a Triumph to the Classic Intermediate sweep, Pam Leibgold (Post Vintage Women’s Novice), and Dennis Brown (Premier Expert) on a Greeves. Steve Harouff spent most of Saturday’s race following eventual runner-up Ed Weger until making a last lap pass for the win. But Sunday, Harouff pushed his Yamaha to the front right off the start and never looked back in a dominating performance to win the Vintage 50+ Intermediate class. Lynn Parkins supplanted Weger for Sunday’s runner-up position. POST VINTAGE:

Kurtis Palmer, Brian Grove, and Russ Dixon swapped the overall lead several times throughout Saturday’s afternoon race with sixty other competitors navigating the course behind them. Palmer’s turn in the lead was the most effective, as he pushed himself up front for the initial time on the last lap and remained there to be the first to see the checkered flag. Grove was on his rear tire pressuring Palmer right to the flag only three seconds shy of the win himself. Mike Blackwell would make his way past Dixon to take third with Dixon falling to fourth, which was a remarkable finish considering Dixon was running in an intermediate class. Grove and Blackwell would take the first two spots respectively in the very competitive Post Vintage Open Expert class, with Dane Brownawell (YAM) and Mark Hummell (HUSQ) as third and fourth in class also locking down a spot in the top-ten overall. It has been a number of years since former Indiana Pacers star Rik Smits joined in the fun at an AHRMA National, so it was great to see him sitting on the starting line with his trusty Maico. With a solid eighth overall and a Post Vintage 50+ Expert win over 2020 National Champ Joe Cole’s Husqvarna and third place Joe Wallace, Rik made his return a resounding success. While a repeat win and top-ten overall on Sunday wrapped up a weekend sweep, the cooler story was seeing Rik joined on the line by his son Derrik, who is also a speedster and ended up just seconds behind the elder Smits in the day-two overall standing. Josh Horvath was poised to take a win in the morning and afternoon Saturday until Jeremey Peace made a last-minute pass on lap five to take the Post Vintage Open win. Josh held position for the runner-up with Aaron Walker and Eric Bolin following. Emily Reichart’s lap two pass for the lead was enough to take the Post Vintage Women’s Intermediate AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

win over Kelley Pearce, but typical of the relentless battle between these two, Pearce flipped the script Sunday by leading wire-to-wire for the win.

Brian Grove put the disappointment of losing the lead on the last lap Saturday behind him quickly on Sunday, as well as the rest of the field of fifty-seven. Grove led every lap on his Husqvarna with Saturday’s hero Palmer holding close by turning nearly identical lap times throughout. However, a lap one sprint to the front by Grove was enough to carry him to the checkered flag for the victory. John Ashcraft was right in the mix as well with a third overall. Cameron Pennington’s seventh overall finish was an example of another top-notch performance by an intermediate rider as he also took home the win in Early Modern Open Intermediate action over the Suzuki RMX of Timothy Brendlinger and Wally Naletko’s Yamaha in second and third. Jacob Ritorto hustled his KDX by early leader Grant Reichart’s CR250 to stand atop the Pre-Modern Open Intermediate podium on Sunday with Josh Folmar rounding out the top three, also on a Honda.

e

Larry Miller had his XR200 out front early in the Post Vintage 60+ Intermediate until Saturday’s victor Fred Walker made a successful challenge for the lead on lap three. Walker’s lead was short lived however as he was unable to complete the white flag lap thus handing the win back to Miller. Fred would fall back to third as Mike Zdybak also took advantage of his early exit to jump into the second spot. Kevin Thomas wound up in fourth behind the freight train of XR200s on his Yamaha IT.

Reynlow is always a highlight of the schedule in my book, and this year was no disappointment. The panache that the National status has brought to the atmosphere, as well as the additional competitions that are available for spectating and/or participating (trials and motocross) just add to the overall experience. The event just keeps improving and intends to do so again in 2022. If you can make it to Reynoldsville on Father’s Day weekend next year, do so, it is worth the trip! Many thanks to the town of Reynoldsville, Tim Doan, and the rest of the Reynlow Park Authority board for providing access to their slice of off-road heaven. Thanks to Cross Country Coordinator Becky Hayes for leading the National series efforts, regional coordinator Dave Kutskel for lending his talents, crew, and trail bosses to manage the event, and the participants for making the event a hit. Also, thanks to Hagerty Insurance for stepping up as the primary sponsor for the 2021 AHRMA National Cross-Country Series. few miles west of the wide Susquehanna River, and just below the town of Airville, PA, sits the property of Kirk Roycroft. Known as Twilight Farms, this would be the third time Kirk welcomed AHRMA’s Mid Atlantic Cross-Country series to his collection of hills and valleys. Already garnering a reputation as one of the tougher courses on the circuit, this year’s iteration would prove to be no different. After some tweaking following the inaugural event, the course had been dialed in nicely by year two. This year’s course would essentially follow last year’s with some minor variations. After some minor course work and final approval by local hotshot, and perennial top-ten finisher, Brett Reichart, the 3.5-mile course was ready for action in 2021. As stated earlier, it is challenging, but it sure is fun too. Certainly, a return to its former springtime spot on the schedule would remove the additional challenge presented last year, as the rescheduled event suffered from the heat and humidity of mid-summer. But, after the wacky weather of the previous round two weeks prior, where temperatures dropped into the low 30s and rain turned to snow, Mother Nature was not prepared to quit tossing wild cards on the table. Just as the course followed a similar path as 2020, so too did the weather. Despite the calendar stating late May, the thermometer registered solidly in the 90s. So much for avoiding the heat this year! In one of the few variations from last year, the tight starting area grew a bit larger and moved a bit further north to make way for some new construction at the site. The beautiful,

partially completed, barn would house the excellent ownerprovided concessions on this day, and would play host to the, by-now, Mr. and Mrs. Roycroft’s nuptials shortly after the race weekend. Congratulations! The newly opened starting area resides on the higher elevations of the property and is a bit unique. Laid out like bumpers in a pinball machine, multiple trees remained in the main path. Obviously, with safety being a primary concern, each tree was cushioned by hay bales and conspicuously marked. After dodging the trees, the course entered the western part of the property, which is dominated by flowing two-track following the rolling terrain, with an entertaining grass track section part way through before a return to the woods. A quick trip through the scoring tent and on to the eastern portion of the course where things change quite dramatically as the course crosses a creek and ascends a substantial hillside through a variety of roots, rocks, and single-track. Once atop the hill, the course becomes rather rock-strewn as it zigzags through some ATV width paths before hitting off camber single-track leading to a long rocky downhill return to the valley below. A bit of gnarly rock garden ends with a run back through the creek and into the distinct terrain of the northern bit. Ascending yet again, this time starting on a dirt road laden with glimmering mica-infused rocks. A couple short and steep climbs, often a site of potential traffic, follow one another as the trail enters the woods for a final set of switch-back single-track that meanders its way up in elevation in a return to the starting area to begin

another lap. In general, the trail condition was excellent, although with the warm temperatures, there was a bit of dust in some areas dependent on the level of traffic. RACE ONE (VINTAGE): After settling for the runner-up in the overall standing in his first two races, Josh Zerance used his front row, AA class, starting position as an advantage. With thirty-seven riders behind and a clear track in front of him, Josh set the pace on his Can-Am. Early troubles for AA class cohort Brian Grove, overall winner of every round so far, set the stage for Zerance to lead all four laps taking the overall and AA class victory. Vintage 200 Expert victor Brett Reichart followed in second overall on his Puch with Sanford Quickel close behind in third. Penton-mounted Quickel also won the Classic Expert class for the third time in as many tries this season. Josh Horvath outpaced the rest of the intermediate pack with a convincing fourth overall and a class win in the competitive Vintage 200 Intermediate class over runner-up Sylas Merrell with Brock Kutskel rounding out the podium. These three were all within the top-eleven overall in a strong showing for the class. Yamaha pilot Larry Warner knocked down fifth spot overall and topped Joe Cole’s Husqvarna for the

RACE TWO (POST VINTAGE): Fifty-one riders lined up amongst the trees to start the Post Vintage race, which would become a race of redemption for Brian Grove. He set aside his (51Z) Richard Colahan, woes from (470) Kerry Kubena an early exit in race one to take the overall win. Although Grove’s Honda XR200 led all four laps, it wasn’t an easy win by any means. At most any point in the race there was less than a minute separating the top three in Vintage Open Intermediate, but Dave Light took the class win for the second race in a row. though and settled for second. Lee Hickok joined the AA class and rode to a strong third overall and third in class as all were AA class riders. James McCommon took an early lead in Post Vintage 60+ Expert, but John Brunnett hustled his Can-Am into the lead on lap two. McCommon continued close pursuit of John throughout the remainder of the race, but Brunnett held strong to take the checkers. Yamaha-mounted Charlie Walker wasn’t far behind for third. 2021 is the year of parity in Post Vintage 200 Intermediate. Of the ten riders who took the green flag, eight were vying to be the fourth different winner in as many races. Sam Merrell was hoping to be that guy as he set the pace off the start. But, following up on a strong race one performance, Brock Kutskel proved he was on fire this day. Kutskel made the move past Sam’s IT175 on lap two and proceeded to lay down blisteringly fast lap times on the way to the win while Sam managed to stay on the podium in third. Brock’s win continued the trend of not only a different winner each round, but a first-time winner in the class as well. Glenn

Hershey and Howard Grove battled all race in Post Vintage 60+ Intermediate class. Howard led lap one on his XR200, but with Glenn only ten seconds back it wasn’t long before the lead changed hands. Grove held tight to the back tire of Hershey’s Can-Am as the two maintained pace. Ultimately, Grove’s bid to take back the lead fell (686) Dave Salmen short as he settled for runner-up behind Glenn with Fred Walker coming in third. RACE THREE (DISC BRAKE): As expected, the AA class riders again dominated race three, with the top four overall coming from the front row. Mike Blackwell and Luke Goonan put on quite a show as they were both turning in amazing lap times and were separated by mere seconds each lap. Mike held the lead on his Kawasaki when the white flag flew, but Goonan’s KTM was only seven seconds behind setting the stage for an epic last lap battle. When the pair emerged from the woods for the last time, Luke was now in front and took the checkers in a stellar series debut for the newcomer. Blackwell, giving it all he had, fell just four seconds short. Fellow AA class riders Brett

The Beginner class was nearly swept by new rider Jenny Newell, who lost only one point on her fist ol e loop, and then obviously got the hang of it for zeros on the next two loops. Cross county ran that afternoon, and everyone knew it would be dusty in the back of the property with no moisture. Jeff Bushey and Wayne Hawes took every possible chance to keep out of the dustiest areas with the lay-out, and all in all it was a good result. Unfortunately, the conditions no doubt kept some away. Fourteen vintage and twelve Post Vintage riders enjoyed the course and were, for the most part, spread out enough so dust wasnʼt a problem.

The 60+ Expert Vintage class was the largest, led by Kelly Shane, who was followed by Jeff Bushey and Wayne Hawes. Sportsman Open was won by Chet Mauer, also the overall winner. Mike Gorrono won the 60+ Novice class over Cy Yee. Most Post Vintage classes contained only one rider. The exceptions were 200 Novice, won by David Alamo over

Robert Toronto, and Women expert, won by Erin Gilkison over Jane Magee. The VMX on Sunday had just over ninety entries, which made for an early M i ke Houge day. Nine singlegated races ran without a hitch, and the water truck watering efforts worked perfectly, better than the usual irrigation sprinklers. Most races were made up of three to five different but compatible classes. The classes were small, but no less exciting or competitive; brothers Chet and Clay Mauer in Open Age Expert each won a moto, with Chet getting the overall for the final moto win. Ariel James and Erin Gulkison took the two top spots of three in the Open Age Intermediate class. Steve Gard, Kelly Shane and Stephen Newell had very close races in one of the larger classes, 60+ Expert, with Steve Gard taking the overall win even after Newell rode like a madman beating everyone in a gripping moto two. Iron Butt winners for the weekend, those who rode all three events—trials, cross country, and VMX—were Charlie Higdon (also the oldest competitor at a fast 79 years young), David Alamo, Layne Hanna, Kelly Shane, Russ Pfirrman, Cy Yee, Mike Gorrono, Chet Mauer and Pete Jorgenson.

Fascinated with Fasteners and Flanges

FIGURE A

I

’ve always been intrigued by the bolt thread—that rotating ramp or helical ridge responsible for clamping stuff together. Nuts and bolts. I still recall my very first attraction to the wizardry of something mechanical at around age 10. It was a buddy’s old Clinton two-stroke go-kart engine. He made it run, but it had no muffler, so I just stood in amazement watching the piston go up and down through the flaming exhaust port, smelling the premix and diggin’ all the racket. The seed was planted, and by the age of 17, I was pulling car engines and doing valve jobs. My attraction to fasteners emerged after working at a Honda shop for a few months in 1972. The fasteners on a motorcycle are noticeable and prominent, and Hondas always had attractive and nicely-finished nuts and bolts. Fast-forward fifty years and my obsession with nut and bolt form and function is alive and well. Every bike I build gets ‘the treatment.’ So, while form (the look) is cool, function is more important, especially on a vintage competition machine that spends most of its life buzzing away at high RPM. We’ve all been there: a nut or bolt takes the day off, and vanishes. I have been addicted to flange bolts for quite some time and use them for just about everything on race bike builds. (For period-correct restorations, I use the original fasteners.) Flange bolts and nuts are superior to the nut/lock washer/ flat washer stack, and dropping one thing on the floor is better than dropping three things on the floor. And, while working an all-nighter in the paddock on Saturday night,

the fewer parts to keep up with, the better. The flange provides a larger area of load distribution which is easier on the contact surfaces. That larger flange surface acts like a brake and keeps the fastener from loosening and spending the rest of its life in the grass outside turn nine. These flanged nuts and bolts are available in several grades and materials from a variety of sources. Here are a few I rely on. FIGURE A, above, left to right: Not flange bolts, but JIS crosshead screws, 5 and 6 millimeter. PSA: These are not Phillips® screws and using a Phillips® point will damage the screw and the driver. Next is my go-to 6 mm case bolt with 8mm hex head. They are superior to a socket head screw because of their wide flange. Socket head screws have smaller diameter heads which can dig in and deform crankcase cover castings. The fourth fastener is an OEM Honda dish-head bolt. The next two are drilled titanium with dished heads. The M6 has an 8 mm head; the M8 has a 10 mm hex head. FIGURE B left to right: standard 6 mm flange nut, aluminum 6 mm flange nylock nut, 6mm flange nut with metal locking device. I use the 8- and 10-mm versions of these metal lock nuts for securing engine mounting bolts. I like this setup (FIGURE C) for wind screens (with the rubber washer against the plexiglass) and number plates: aluminum 5 mm screw with an aluminum fender washer and aluminum lock nut.

And then there are those nuts and bolts that require safety wire. I’ve successfully drilled my share of bolts and nuts but have better things to do to occupy my time, so I source pre-drilled components. There are many sources for drilled stainless or titanium bolts. I prefer the titanium bolts with the smaller, dished hex head. I like the look of these bolts, they never tarnish and are also available undrilled. Prices for these aren’t too staggering.

And now, a safety wire tip or two. My first roll of lock wire was .032”. I used this size for decades until I discovered .025. This stuff changed my life. It is much easier to use, is still heavy enough for most motorcycle applications and is more suitable for hand grips (FIGURE H).

FIGURE E

FIGURE H

FIGURE D I use a Moto-D Nuthholer (FIGURE D) to drill flange nuts from flat-to-flat. This jig even works on M6 flange nuts. The Nutholers are getting hard to find though. I fabricated a jig (FIGURE E) to drill straight through bolt heads after I install, torque and mark the flats for proper orientation. Safety wire solves the disappearing bolt problem, but the wire should be installed in a position, with a tight pull, that prevents the fastener from loosening (FIGURE F, .025 wire).

I also use .020 for many harder-to-access or lighter duty safety wiring. It works great on fuel lines (FIGURE J) and brake adjusting nuts. I use the soft and pliable OEM Honda bulk fuel hose and two wraps of the .020 is all you need to pass the AHRMA Tech fuel line pull test. I keep a small waste wire receptacle handy (FIGURE K) for wire scraps with a weight in the bottom to keep it upright. Only problem with the smaller diameter wire: punctures. You’ll need more bandages.

FIGURE J

FIGURE F I use M6X20 stainless steel coupling nuts with 13 millimeters of thread machined out (FIGURE G) and then drill each flat. (Yeah, no flange. I searched the planet to no avail.) The holes clear the end of the exhaust stud to make safety wiring the nuts much easier and more effective. Fortunately, there are sources for drilled flange nuts, 8 mm and larger.

I use a more modern flange nut for front and rear axles for the same reason I use flange nuts and bolts: wider load distribution. I make these safety clips with stainless rod; you just need a small torch to bend the tight retaining U (FIGURE L).

FIGURE L I hope some of this form and function flange revelation finds its way onto your motorbike in the near future. May your nuts and bolts stay with you.

ur first MX event of the season for both the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, I can tell you that for many, many years this event is basically our version of the Jets vs. the Sharks from West Side Story. And 2021 was no different my friends, especially as we emerged from our pandemic cocoons. Lots of smack talk in the pits, made even better by our new Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Team Challenge for 2021. The blood was flowing, and the engines were warming up on a beautiful day that started out chilly (40s!) but reached 60 degrees by the afternoon. Once again, the Krebs family did a fantastic job of preparing their MX facility/track, which features some great elevation changes and challenging features. Imagine a track with not ONE, but TWO of Unadilla’s famous “Screw You” downhill/ uphills with a 180 at the bottom. That be Irish Valley, folks. 100 race entries were recorded for the day with both regions well represented. Our thanks to Merritt Brown and Ed Roman for making sense of it all and organizing nine races to make sure everyone had some fun. And some pretty intense racing as it turns out! In Post Vintage 60+ Intermediate, Bud Schaible (Mai) and Ed Abdo (Hon) exchanged moto wins, but Bud took home the foam board by virtue of winning the second moto. And the same thing happened in Post Vintage 40+ Intermediate between Brett Darrow (Yam) and Dave Royds (Hon), with Brett bringing home the bacon with his second moto win. Hold onto your seats because there were THREE more classes where riders exchanged moto wins on the day. In a GP 125 “Battle of the RMs,” Intermediate Russ Van Norman 32

(Suz) topped Henry Ahnert (Suz), and Greg Barrett (Mai) got the best of Merritt Brown (CZ) in ESS 500 Intermediate. And in Next Gen 250 Intermediate, Stephen Deveney won the first moto, but was beaten out to the blue ribbon/overall by Mark Curran’s second moto win. And here is a bonus fun fact for four of the five races I just described: one of the guys who took a moto win was from the Northeast and one was from the Mid-Atlantic! It just doesn’t get any better than this. I’d also like to mention who won the big “sign-up” classes of the day—which I will define as five or more entries. Mark Curran’s well-earned win in Next Gen 250 Intermediate was over four other guys. In Vintage 60+ Intermediate, Steve Lynch (CZ) earned himself a solid win over four other racers by virtue of his 1-1 finishes. And in Sportsman 250 Intermediate, Devin Trexler (Hon) beat out Bud Schaible (Hon) and three other riders with his 1-1 moto results. Congrats guys! Final recognitions before moving onto our next race event would be a shoutout to our multiple class winners on the day. Ironman Expert Darrell Wassil took home three foam boards with wins in three classes (GP 250 and 500, and Post Vintage 40+). Mark Curran also had three class wins, with his other two class win coming in Ultima 250 Intermediate, and Pre-Modern 250 Intermediate. Finally, Merritt Brown (ESS 500 Intermediate and Historic 500 Intermediate) and Steve Lynch (Sportsman 500 Intermediate and his Vintage 60+ Intermediate mentioned above) get honorable mentions was two class wins apiece.

ell, guess what? Upstate New York property saw a lot of rain leading up their event weekend? And here is a bonus question. What upstate New York motocross event saw an absolutely crazy cloudburst/rainstorm near the end of the first set of motos that resulted in cancellation of the second motos? If you guessed the 600 acres Geer’s Farm as the answer to both questions you would be absolutely correct! So, tell you what, let’s start out talking about Saturday’s cross country race and finish up with a short story about Sunday’s abbreviated event. Once again, Pete Komarek, John Manly—and a few other volunteers whose names I do not have handy—set up a great four mile+ course through hill and dale that proved challenging to the 32 rider entries who were recorded for the event. How challenging. Well, mid-week they had to build a bridge over a heretofore unknown stream on the property to keep riders from drowning. And there was one more “challenge,” a half-dozen riders in the Vintage race took a wrong turn on the first lap but eventually found their way back to the course! All was forgiven and intense racing ensued with Mike Ferguson bringing home the Expert Overall on his Penton 250 Hare Scrambler and Rick Ketcham leading the Intermediates home on his Bennett Brothers Honda 125 XLsinore, while also beating Dave Salmen (Yam) out for the 200 Sportsman Intermediate win. I typed “125” so all of Rick’s fellow competitors would get a good chuckle by the way. It was great to see Jay Lane

shaking off the dust (actually mud) and winning the Vintage 60+ Intermediate class on his immaculate high-piped CZ 250. With no rain on the day, the course got even better and the racing was faster in Post Vintage. Once again, expert Mike Ferguson led all challengers home, this time on his Honda XR200 (also winning Post Vintage 200 Expert). Experts Jay Danek (Post Vintage 60+ Expert), John Frackelton (Next Gen 200 Expert), and Mike Sciocchetti (Post Vintage 50+ Expert) also recorded class wins. Eric Roof (Kaw) was first overall Intermediate and also finished first of four riders in the 97-99 Two-stroke Open Intermediate class, with Trevor Badgely’s Suzuki finishing second. Another four-rider signup was found in Post Vintage 200 Intermediate, with Ryan Coyle’s Yamaha IT beating Keith Vanderwalker’s Kawasaki KDX for the win. Tony Yannitelli topped Joe Chodnicki (Hus) and Rick Ketcham (Hon) for the 50+ Intermediate win. Honorable mention to Dave Salmen for racing both Vintage and Post Vintage races, and having enough energy left to win Historic Open Intermediate on his Suzuki PE250. Sunday’s motocross event got off to a great start and went all downhill from there. Feedback from riders after last year’s race in October resulted in some course changes and additions by Pete Komarek that drew praise from the riders during practice. 66 courageous entries were farmed out into eight scheduled races by Merritt Brown and races were underway by 10 AM. The rain began—lightly at first—

about race three or four. The one-mile-plus course—which utilizes a Geer’s Farm crop field (on hiatus…) and some trail/routing adjacent to a former gravel pit—was mostly clay and we all know what happens when you add lots of water to clay. One of my favorite characterizations of the racers who carried on in the increasingly deteriorating conditions was the “Mudders of Invention.” AHRMA Northeast race leadership had to stop the event after race eight first moto when a long, heavy cloudburst struck the area. It was decided that all racers would be scored for their second moto the same as their result in the first moto.

Chris Miller (68) leads Colby Shore (92), Merritt Brown (557), and Dennis Foley (717) at Lamoka MX

Finally, it would not be right if I didn’t mention that Alex Moroz—longtime AHRMA member AND founder of the Legends of Motocross exhibits now seen at all major professional motocross event—has returned to race with us! Congrats on your Vintage 70+ Expert win, my friend! Thanks again to the Geer Brothers, Pete Komarek, and all the other volunteers for their help thru the weekend!

ake Lamoka has to be one of prettiest areas on our schedule to haul your race bikes to, set up your tent or pop-up or whatever, and get ready to race. And this year was no different, with the added bonus of sunny skies and 70s greeting the racers on both days. Let me say up front, that Rynn and Robyn Shepherd once again did a great job of hosting our 2021 event at their facility and we would like to say, “Thank You.” Now, as pretty as it might be on the top of the hill, that ain’t always the case on the bottom of the hill, and this was once again true for this year’s XC racing on Saturday. Your bikes start clean, but they do not EVEN finish clean. Funny thing is that for about three quarters of their four-mile-plus loop, you’re thinking, “Not bad—loamy, fast, great switchbacks.” And then you enter their “swamp,” not a real swamp mind you, but trail conditions that are not far removed. We 34

should mention that the loop also utilizes most of the MX track where, in theory, one has the opportunity to shed the accumulated mud. 35 racers showed up to race Vintage or Post Vintage (or both!) and eagerly plunged into the woods from the dead engine starts in both races. In Vintage, after four laps it was Mike Ferguson’s Penton that came home first for the Experts and Jay Lane and his CZ 250 who won first overall in Intermediate. Jay actually fell off his bike during the parade lap just to instill a false sense of hope amongst the rest of us Intermediates that we might be able to capture that spot. No chance of that, and nice job by Jay, who also led three others home in winning the 60+ Vintage Intermediate. Mike Ferguson’s cousin, Tim (Ferguson), was second overall on the day and first 60+ Vintage Expert on his Can-Am. Rick Ketcham (Hon) and Chris Miller (Ossa) brought home the rest of

In Post Vintage, there was a new sheriff in town—so to speak—as Darrell Wassil and his Yamaha IT200 put a whuppin’ on Mike Ferguson’s XR200R taking home first Overall Expert after five laps, also beating him for the Post Vintage 200 Expert foam board to boot. Bob Frederick (Yam) was fast and furious in winning Post Vintage 50+ Expert, beating Mike Sciocchetti. Leading the Intermediates home was Vince Monks on his Yamaha, and he also beat four riders for the Post Vintage 50+ Intermediate trophy. John Manly led home two other riders to win Post Vintage 60+ Intermediate and Dustin Loss is really liking his new Yamaha IT200 this year, so much so that he beat Ryan Collins to the flag for the Post Vintage 200 Intermediate. By Saturday night, the Shepherd’s “parc ferme” was full of trucks and trailers and RVs and that meant we were gonna have a big crowd of racers and families on Sunday. Ninetyseven (97!) race entries were recorded by Merritt and Ed and ten races were scheduled for the day around Lake Lamoka’s topside and hillside course that is always a challenge and loved by the racing community. Hence, the great sign-up! Remember Darrell Wassil (Mai) from above AND from Irish Valley MX? Well, he continued his winning ways on Sunday, winning Post Vintage 40+ Expert and GP 500 Expert in race one and race ten. Another very fast man in race one was Craig Lane (Yam) in Post Vintage 50+ Expert, who beat three other very talented Experts. Race two was where all the fireworks were at nine Post Vintage 60+ and four Post Vintage 50+ Intermediate racers. Monty Barnes (Hon) scored 1-1 to beat the 60+ crowd, and Jeff Rayeski’s Ossa Phantom won the 50+ class. In race three, it was Mark Curran (Hon) taking the Next Gen 250 Intermediate win over five other racers and Jana Schneider scored her first win on

Loren Wescott (Hus) beat out Paul Wawrynovic (CZ) in 60+ Expert in race four. They split moto wins but Loren came out on top because of his second moto win. Merritt Brown (CZ) earned his first place Vintage 60+ Intermediate foam board the same way, losing out to Renn Shepherd (Ric) in the first moto, but winning the second moto. But, Renn Shepherd did get a class win on the day, beating four other racers on his beautiful Rickman-Montesa to win Sportsman 250 Intermediate in race seven. Chris Hill was the best of the Vintage 50+ Intermediate class, beating three other riders. Tim Jackson (Hon) and Rob Clare (Hon) were class winners in race five, in Ultima 500 Expert and GP 250 Expert, respectively. And Dustin Loss (Suz) was king of the GP 250 Intermediate class, finishing ahead of four other racers. Consistent with new AHRMA rules, race six was all Novice classes and congrats (and welcome!) are in order for Rich Knepp (CZ/Sportsman 250), Greg Blanchard (Yam/Next Gen 125), Percy Clark (Post Vintage 40+), Jody Curry (Post Vintage 50+), and David Carmen (Post Vintage 60+). A final shoutout to some of our fastest Vintage racers. Mike Robinson (Bul) won Sportsman 250 Expert, Lee Curry in ESS 500 Expert, and Damon Shepherd (Hus) in Sportsman 500 Expert. THAT’S A WRAP. Once again, a big thank you to all the race facility owners, our Northeast region leadership (Merritt and Ed), and volunteers. Fall racing planning!

THE UPCOMING SCHEDULE:

Hope you all are having a fun 2021 racing season. I know, I know, the rain has been a deterrent, but our fall schedule will be packed and we all like racing in the fall better anyways down here. Let’s get to some business though as we are going to modify the South-Central Regional Championship Qualifications for our Cross Country and Motocross racers wanting to compete for what will be a very nice trophy and piece of apparel to show off with. Because the Post Vintage race at the Gator National in Desoto last spring was canceled and we had some bad mud conditions overall I am going to scale back some on requirements. Again, the REGIONAL ONLY events (Waco, Desoto Fall Regional, Kentwood Oilman’s Classic, and Donie XC race) will add 10 points to your overall score and you must make at least two regional-only events to qualify for a championship, so our racing is spread out for regionals and there is no good excuse to not support them. Long term, the program will expand as I expect the number of nationals in the region to decrease as we were out of balance severely to the rest of the country this year.

SEPTEMBER 10-12:

Here it goes:

REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY FOR SOUTH CENTRAL REGIONAL AWARDS: •

Vintage and Post Vintage MX minimum six of the nine events must be raced of which two must be a regionalonly event.

Next Gen MX minimum five of eight events must be raced of which two must be a regional-only event.

Cross Country minimum eight of the thiirteen events must be raced of which two must be a regional-only event.

All events will be counted towards points totals for championship.

Regional-only events will have an additional 10 points added to the total score of each event.

You must be an AHRMA member to receive Regional AHRMA Championship Awards and Points. Nonmember points will be removed and rescored for members.

Also, since we have last updated you all there are two new sponsors on board for 2021. Alan Drane has made a personal donation to the 2021 season as has Hypersports Garage owned by Larry Navarro. Anyone wishing to help fund our sponsorship program please contact me and I will get you the details. We should be in good shape for 2021 awards, and they will be special. As for 2020 awards I will have a nice trophy for presentation at the Texas Vintage GP race in October. 36

AHRMA and the International Motorcycle Show could not come to an agreement for 2021 so we will not be active in a display in early October at Texas Motor Speedway. Look for future shows in 2022 forward to get back together on the program. Next month, look for a feature on the recent return to racing at Waco Eagles! It was a blast. Keep it on the pipe! Making History Cecil Sandford made history as the first rider to win a World Championship riding an MV Agusta. Now, at the age of 91, he is motorcycling’s oldest-surviving World Champion and still has vivid memories of Grand Prix racing in the 1950s.

n Wednesday, June 11th, 1952, Cecil Sandford started something very big. He scored the first World Championship race victory for MV Agusta, the marque that went on to become the most successful manufacturer in Grand Prix racing, with 275 race wins and 75 Rider and Constructor world titles. Even now, almost half a century after By MickMV’s last race, only Honda, YaOfield maha, and Aprilia have achieved more Grand Prix success. Two months after Sandford took MV’s first classic win in the Ultra-Lightweight TT, he clinched the 125cc World Championship, MV’s first. Five years later he won his second World Championship, in the 250cc class, with rival Italian brand Mondial. During his 15-year career, the Gloucestershire, England rider had factory contracts with AJS, Velocette, MV, DKW, and Mondial. He raced against Geoff Duke, John Surtees, and Mike Hailwood,

undreds of racers from North America and other parts of the world converged on Daytona International Speedway to compete for race wins and National Championships at the 36th annual Championship Cup Series (CCS) Race of Champions, featuring the final rounds of the AMA-sanctioned American Sportbike Racing Association (ASRA) National Sprint and Team Challenge series. On the line were eight National Championships in the ASRA Sprint Series Presented by Pirelli Tire, decided by points accumulated over a seven-round season; four National Championships in the ASRA Team Challenge Series Presented by Michelin Tire, decided by points accumulated during an eight-round season; and 54 CCS National Championships, which were decided by winner-take-all sprint races. The Race of Champions also included two MotoGirlGT exhibition races, featuring only female competitors. After a full day of mostly dry practice time and the Team Hammer Advanced Riding School on Friday, racing began in wet conditions on Saturday; the track dried out later in the afternoon and

Former Moto2 World Championship rider and 2008 125cc Grand Prix World Championship runner-up Simone Corsi rode a Pirelli-fitted Squid Hunter Racing Yamaha YZF-R6 in the ASRA Team Challenge race as part of a last-minute deal put together as a possible precursor to a Daytona 200 effort. The 32-year-old Italian took the overall lead on lap 30 of the race and turned laps as quick as 1:53.485 to pull away and claim the overall and GTU class victories by 13.869 seconds. “I love this track,” Corsi said in English from the podium. “The race was very difficult, but I enjoy it very much. I want to thank my team. They did a great job.” West Side Performance’s Christian Miranda, age 19, raced closely with Corsi but fell behind after the first and only round of pit stops. Miranda, however, held on to finish second overall and in the GTU class on his Yamaha YZF-R6. Series regular Lloyd Bay-

ley finished third overall and first in the GTO category on his BMW S1000RR. Jinba Ittai Motorsport’s Joel Lenk crossed the finish line fourth overall and second in the GTO class, and that was enough to claim the 2019 ASRA Team Challenge Overall and GTO Championships. Jinba Ittai Motorsport edged out seven-time ASRA Team Challenge Champion Grease Monkey Racing (Eric Helmbach/Stephen Hoffman) for both titles. Grease Monkey Racing finished the race sixth overall and third in GTO. JoeyO Racing (Robert Bettencourt/Sean Osowski) took 18th overall and won in the GT Lights category on a Yamaha FZ07, while fourth place in the GT Lights division was enough for Racing 101 (Doug Stufflebeam/ Gino Angella/Mark Evry/Joseph Ciesnik) to secure the GT Lights Team Challenge Championship. The Team Challenge race was originally scheduled to run for 55 laps, but a crash in the chicane

Britain’s greatest riders of all time. And he won the race in which Hailwood made his debut, at Oulton Park in April, 1957. “Surtees was one of the best riders I ever watched,” recalls Sandford, a chipper nonagenarian with an amazing memory for the first decade of motorcycle World Championship racing. “And Duke was always a step ahead. He was the only bloke I ever saw drift a motorbike, at Monza.” Sandford started racing as a teenager, just after the Second World War, after converting his Triumph road bike for scrambling, trials, and grass-track duties. Next came road racing, usually at disused wartime bases like Haddenham, Dunholme, and Blandford Forum. He made his TT debut in the 1948 Clubmans Junior, although he very nearly didn’t make it to the Isle of Man. “We were taking my Velocetteto Douglas from Liverpool, with me, my mum and my dad in an MG with the Velo on a trailer.
