When she returned to her home town in 1989 Dee joined WCPN 90.3 FM as Morning Edition host, and later hosted her own midday jazz show on 90.3. In 1996 Dee stepped into a new spotlight as host and Senior Producer for the arts and culture program Around Noon, today known as The Sound of Applause. That spotlight expanded following the creation of Ideastream in 2001, as Dee also became host and Managing Producer of the arts and culture TV show Applause on WVIZ/PBS. Since 1996 Dee has interviewed more than 10,000 artists and arts advocates. Along the way she has earned numerous awards , been inducted into the Broadcaster’s Hall of Fame, and a received a 2016 Cleveland Arts Prize. A little known fact about Dee is that just before she got her first job in radio, she entertained the idea of going back to school and studying architecture, so, she is VERY excited to be part of the ceremony for this year’s Cleveland Design Awards!

DPAW’s working methodology draws inspiration from regional traditions of craft and fabrication, placing an emphasis on the potential of conventional materials and construction methods. Through an immersive process of research and investigation, the studio cultivates an understanding of contextual specificity as a nuanced relationship between place, time and local culture. In implementing this approach, the Workshop purposefully embraces a design rigor aimed at simplicity and precision, with the underlying premise that innovation necessarily equals economy.

DAVE SIEGEL

Tonight’s Venue Hilton Cleveland Downtown Downtown Cleveland as we know it today was designed in 1903 by Daniel Burnham as a vast green Mall flanked by the City’s major government buildings. The mall is considered one of the most significant major urban spaces in the United States (Burnham also completed designs for Washington DC and the Chicago Lakefront). The site for the Hilton Cleveland Downtown Hotel occupies the last available site on that civic green. Cleveland’s newly opened Convention Center is located under two thirds of the Mall. The county and city posed the challenge to the team of architects to design a building respectful to the Burnham Plan that was unique to Cleveland, creating an iconic image for Cleveland’s skyline. The building can be viewed as having two parts: the building’s base and tower. The design for the building base was directly influenced by existing neoclassical buildings flanking the Mall. The shared characteristics of those buildings; base, middle and top, expressed with solid corners, were applied to the hotel base but in a modern architectural language. Buildings flanking the mall have a distinctive cornice line 90 feet above grade. The Hilton Hotel design has a cornice at 90 feet that becomes a tall porch and continues the strong horizontal line of the surrounding buildings. The porch connects the Hotel to the Mall. The result is a modern building connecting to the historic context unique to Cleveland. The glass tower of the hotel is articulated as three slender towers. Each of the three towers has a unique expression in the glass curtain wall. Near the top of the tower, the glass façade tilts out over the Mall. On the upper most floor a terrace for the roof top bar is cut out of the glass providing an outdoor area overlooking the lakefront. The tower’s unique sculptural form will create an iconic image for Cleveland’s skyline. The hotel entrance is on Lakeside Drive directly adjacent to the entry to the Convention Center to encourage a strong connection both visually and physically. The hotel’s restaurant and public spaces are positioned on the Mall by design for maximum exposure. The project is pursuing a LEED-Silver certification.
