DESIGN AWARDS JURY CHAIR

Steve Dumez, FAIA | Eskew Dumez Ripple+

In over 25 years of professional practice, Steve Dumez has led the design of complex projects in a wide range of building types. As Director of Design for our practice, he oversees the design of all projects from concept to construction documents, working closely with a team of senior designers in ensuring the consistent quality level that drives our design-first practice. His engaging design process concentrates on first developing a detailed design program for clients including building image and brand goals, program compliance and ultimately physical design drivers. Under his design leadership, EskewDumezRipple has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards for design excellence, including more than 25 national design awards and an additional 100+ awards at the local, state and regional levels.

Steve is a Past-President of AIA Louisiana and AIA New Orleans and serves as an active professional mentor within the region. He has also chaired AIA design awards programs at the local, state and regional level and has served on numerous design award juries across the country. He is actively engaged in many local civic organizations and has previously served on the board of the Contemporary Arts Center of New Orleans. His projects have been recently published in several books as well as numerous national architectural and design magazines such as Architect, Architectural Record, Contract, and Interior Design.

DESIGN AWARDS JURY

Paul Mankins, FAIA, LEED AP BD+C | Substance Architecture

Widely regarded as one of the leading design practitioners in the Midwest, Substance Architecture co-founder Paul Mankins dedicated his career to designing significant award-winning projects, influencing aspiring architects, and promoting design at the highest levels before retiring from Substance in 2022. For Paul, architecture reflects the values of its place—focused, direct, and tailored to the specific physical and cultural context. This philosophy remains fundamental to the culture of the firm today.

Paul’s efforts resulted in a significant body of work recognized with more than 130 design awards, including more than 65 from the AIA. He continues to extend this passion for design by serving as a frequent speaker and design awards juror nationwide. In recognition of his accomplishments, Paul received the Design Achievement Award from Iowa State University’s College of Design in 1998. In addition, he has been recognized with some of the highest individual honors bestowed by the AIA including the Young Architects Award (2003), admission to the College of Fellows in Design (2004), the Richard Upjohn Fellowship (2011), and the AIA Iowa Medal of Honor (2013). In 2022, Paul received the AIA Award for Excellence in Public Architecture. He is one of just fifteen private-sector architects recognized in the thirty-year history of the award. In 2023, Paul served as Chair of the AIA’s Committee on Design.

David Powell, FAIA, LEED AP | Hastings Architecture

David M. Powell has been creating nationally recognized, award-winning architecture since 1991. As a former musician, Dave’s work shares vocabularies across art forms—drawing from a perspective of sincere storytelling rooted in the legendary songwriters and music producers of his home city of Nashville, Tennessee. As a Principal at HASTINGS, Dave’s diverse body of work has garnered over fifty AIA design awards, including one of AIA’s top honors for “Excellence in Public Architecture,” and has been recognized by ARCHITECT Magazine, Architectural Record, The Chicago Athenaeum, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the Urban Land Institute.

In 2016, Dave was elevated to the American Institute of Architect’s prestigious College of Fellows for his design excellence, leadership, and positive contributions to architecture and society. Dave has served a variety of non-profit organizations serving on boards and committees for the Urban Land Institute, Thistle Farms, Restore Ministries, and Nashville Repertory and acting as President of the Board of Directors for AIA Middle Tennessee and the Civic Design Center.

Dale Omori | Omori Media

Dale Omori has spent his career telling stories both in print and in video. As a former newspaper photojournalist at The Plain Dealer and now as an independent video producer, he helps companies, both large and small, profit and non-profit, spread their message and their brand. His clients include some of Cleveland’s largest companies; the Cleveland Clinic and Avery Dennison and the area’s smallest non-profits; the Valley Arts Center in Chagrin Falls. His video work has been recognized by the Cleveland International Film Festival and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY JURY

Christy Gray, NCIDQ | Gray Haus Studios

Christy Gray, an artist and NCIDQ-certified interior design professional with more than 20 years of experience, leads Gray Haus Studios (https://www.grayhausstudios.com). She thrives on managing complex, trans-formative projects for ambitious, visionary brands. She takes special joy in connecting with a diverse array of artists working in a range of mediums to source works of art that sing in a space.

Stephen Manka | Photographer

Manka’s work is centered on experimenting in the public realm. He studied Architecture at Miami of Ohio, and received a masters in Architecture from Kent State. You will find at the core of his work an experiential engagement, a contemplative place to occupy, and some sort of imagined public function. With each project there is always a wide range of outcomes. This somehow ensures invention, mystery and new directions.
