Year In 2023 Review

A Letter From the Executive Director

Thank You to all our members, designers, sponsors, volunteers, community partners, and Board members for making 2023 a great year for AIA Cleveland! Your generosity and leadership helped us provide a connection for our architecture and design communities. In 2024, we will continue to bring our communities together, and create a meaningful experience for all members. We are excited to hear from you and look forward to our new conversations. Every day I am reminded that your talents, passion, and dedication help make AIA Cleveland the best it can be, while also bringing national recognition to our Chapter. I am most grateful for the opportunity to work with a passionate Board who values our members, community engagement, inspires leadership, and promotes diversity and inclusion within AIA Cleveland.

Membership offers many opportunities to pursue your passions, advance your career, share your stories, and to participate in new experiences. Currently, AIA Cleveland has over 550 members who tell me they value the connections within the AIA community, leadership opportunities, events, and education. It’s easy to get involved, and you have the flexibility to participate as much as your schedule allows. New graduates can take advantage of a free 18-month AIA membership and ARE library. All members can benefit from design inspiration, enriching educational events, mentorship, community advocacy and leadership development. We want to give you an opportunity to make a difference in the areas in which you are most passionate, and to let your voice be heard.

You’ll have the opportunity to connect with inspirational speakers, advance your career, and connect with friends. Annual events include Sand Fest, Celebration of Preservation, Design Awards, Design Cruise, Golf Outing, and Women in Architecture Celebration. Additional programming will offer Design Award Lectures & Tours, Hard Hat Tours, Coffee with the Fellows, ARE Study Sessions, Dragon Boat Races, and opportunities for Mentorship. You’ll be able to meet new friends while having fun and sharing ideas about architecture and design.

I invite you to join this dynamic community and enhance your professional development. In 2024, AIA Cleveland will continue its commitment to fostering the advancement of architecture and design, collegiality, networking, advocacy, leadership, and education for its members. We welcome your participation and look forward to building a stronger voice together!

All my best,

A Letter From the President Our Mission

AIA Cleveland uplifts our members and profession to engage and inspire our community through the power of architecture.

At the end of 2022, a month before my term as AIA Cleveland President began, I made a few remarks at the conclusion of the Design Awards Ceremony about the state of the Architectural profession and design community here in Cleveland. As 2022 came to a close, it was clear we, in our businesses and in our design community, were very much still trying to figure out how to re-engage. How much of our work and our programming should be in person? Which interactions were actually a better experience when done virtually? How could we take what we learned during the pandemic about connecting virtually, and combine it with the powerful interactions that are possible when we are all face to face.

How well we connect defines the strength of our relationships, and the strength of our relationships will define the strength of our design community here in Northeast Ohio. Over the past couple of years, it has not been easy to maintain the strength of our relationships with so much else requiring our attention. Over the course of 2023, AIA Cleveland witnessed a distinct trend of members starting to reconnect with one another and finding real value in coming out to programs to learn and grow with colleagues. Coming together is an important part of how we build and maintain relationships with one another.

In 2003, David Isay founded an organization called StoryCorp. Their mission is to “preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people.” It all started with a recording booth in Grand Central Terminal in New York City, where family members, friends, colleagues and even strangrs were asked to sit down and learn from one another by interviewing one another. StoryCorp is a wonderful example of the importance of strong relationships. While it’s not possible for all of the nearly 550 members of AIA Cleveland to sit down and interview one another, we can absolutely find ways over the course of a year to spend a little more time together, to learn about one another and find ways to build meaningful relationships that will strength the design community.

And that really is what AIA Cleveland is here to do; we are here to create opportunities for our members to build relationships with one another, to work together, and to grow the design community in ways that enrich our lives, our careers and our businesses.

You will find this booklet organized in chapters based on the five priorities of our Strategic Plan: Advocacy, Inclusivity, Inspiration, Outreach, and Engagement. Whenever people ask “What value does AIA Cleveland provide,” I reflect on these five priorities and the programs that are delivered for members. Many of the inspiring programs that AIA Cleveland put forth this year provided opportunities for members to enrich their lives, career and businesses, based on your passions and resources. With so many different perspectives on what passions and resources are most important, it is not always easy to thread the needle and provide programs that appeal to the entire membership. But when you look through this book and read some of the outcomes, we hope you will agree that it was a really great year that provided something for everyone. Thank you to all our AIA Cleveland members for entrusting us to lead your chapter this year. We look forward to continuing our mission to uplift YOU to engage and inspire our community in 2024!

Best,

Every five years, the AIA Cleveland Board of Directors update the organizations Strategic Plan. Membership Surveys are conducted every year to gather real-time feedback. This feedback is reviewed during the Strategic Planning process to ensure the Board leverages member feedback and current influences of the Architectural profession.

Advocacy

Serve as a Prominent Voice in the Community

Engage in Conversations that Impact the Built Environment

The AIA Cleveland Board is committed to advocate on behalf of our members by addressing concerns facing our profession in Northeast Ohio. As such, the Board has formed a committee dedicated to advocacy at a local level to take up issues related to planning, city zoning, review boards, approval processes, and others that impact the future of our communities.

The Advocacy Committee upholds the mission of AIA Cleveland by demonstrating the value of the architectural profession to elected and appointed public officials through meaningful dialog and frequent engagement; alerting the board to any regional legislative changes related to planning, zoning, reviews, or approval procedures that may impact our profession; and proposing qualified candidate nominations for open appointed positions on municipal boards and commissions as well as volunteer positions on design review committees.

Form-Based Code Charette June 09, 2023

In June of 2023, AIA Cleveland hosted an afternoon workshop with Cleveland’s City Planning Commission (CPC), APA Cleveland and ULI Cleveland exploring the FormBased Code that CPC has been working on for years. CPC invited architects, developers, planning and other involved with development projects in Cleveland to test the new code against theoretical projects.

Committee Partners

Held at MAGNET, this workshop commenced with several orienting and level-setting educational presentations, followed by group charettes testing the Form-Based Code against the selected theoretical projects. Dozens of professionals attended to provide feedback in advance of CPC introducing the new code to City Council.

Planning and Zoning Board Nominations

In 2023, the Advocacy Committee collaborated with our long term partners, Western Reserve Historical Society and the Early Settlers Association, to provide nominees for open seats on City commissions and boards, including Planning and Landmarks.

Connect Members to State and National Advocacy Efforts

AIA Ohio: Advocacy Day

March 07 2023

On Tuesday, March 07, 2023, representatives from AIA Cleveland, AIA Ohio, AIA Akron, AIA Cincinnati, AIA Columbus, AIA Dayton, AIA Toledo, and AIA Youngstown attended the annual day at the State House to meet with Senators and Representatives. The day began with opening remarks from Senator Louis Blessing III (R-08) and Senate Majority Leader nickie Antonio (D-23) who spoke about last year’s efforts to introduce and pass SB56 and how grassroots support of this legislation from organizations like AIA Ohio impacted the legislative process.

During one-on-one visits with twenty Ohio State Senators and Representatives, including Senator Matt Dolan (SD 24), and Representatives Tom Patton (HD 7), Michael Skindell (HD 13), and Bride Rose Sweeney (HD 14), AIA asked for their support of the following:

• Affordable Housing (HB 3)

• Historic Tax Credits (HB 33)

• Ohio Building Code Updates

• Better Buildings - Sustainability / Resilience

Expanding Affordable Housing Opportunities

AIA Ohio actively advocated for the expansion of Affordable Housing Opportunities. Ohio remains in an affordable housing crisis (housing that a household can pay for while still having money left over for other necessities). Ohio added a shortage of over 2,500 affordable rental units from 2021 to 2022. Actions by the previous assembly have made affordable housing more difficult to maintain and develop due to legislative changes to property tax valuable and removing a funding link to the Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Crdit Program. To combat this context, AIA Ohio advocated for the legislature to pass the state fiscal budget or the affordable housing tax credit bill HB3 to help increase Ohioans access to affordable housing.

AIA Ohio Political Action (PAC)

The Ohio Architects’ PAC is ONE tool that AIA Ohio can use to help increase our influence in the legislative arena. The Ohio Architects’ PAC represented the collective voice of individual members. AIA Ohio has over 2,225 active members who benefit from the advocacy work we do every day.

AIA Ohio used funds from the Ohio Architects’ PAC to support and recognize legislators / legislative-candidates who were supportive of issues important to architects. PAC fund contributions help legislators and legislative candidates remember who we are, and what issues are important to architects.

AIA National Leadership Summit February 14-17, 2023

From February 14-17th, AIA National hosted its annual Leadership Summit in Washington DC. Leadership from nearly every AIA Component in the United States gathered in DC to advocate for our profession. In one single day that week, the Senators and Representatives from every single State in the US, met with Architects from their own districts talking about the policy issues shaping our industry.

The Summit was kicked off by James Carville, who spoke candidly about the challenges we are going to face in the near future related to climate resilience and our decisions to live places that require extraordinary resources to create habitable space.

Attendees were then provided direct coaching on how to effectively communicate with Senators and Representatives on issues important to Architects. Hundreds of Architects spent the day on and around Capital Hill with talking points to ensure topics important to Architects were being presented to every senate office in the same way with a clear message.

“It was so inspiring to see Capitol Hill filled with Architects passionate about the future of our profession and its impact on the communities we call home.” - Michael Christoff, AIA

Guides to Equitable Practice AIA National

“Increasingly, architects and design professionals will be called to lead efforts in finding solutions to many of our society’s most pressing issues. To meet these challenges, as well as the unknown ones ahead, we must have the talent, passion, and creativity of a diverse cohort of students, professionals, and leaders.

The Guides for Equitable Practice, done in partnership with the University of Washington, the University of Minnesota, and The American Institute of Architects’ Equity and the Future of Architecture Committee (EQFA), are a vital part of AIA’s long-term commitment to lead efforts that ensure equity, diversity, and inclusion in architecture—that the architecture profession is as diverse as the nation we serve.

These guides will help you make the business and professional case for ensuring that your organization meets the career development, professional environment, and cultural awareness expectations of current and future employees and clients.” - AIA National

Wendell Burnette Lecture: Dialogues in Space

May 09, 2023

Organized by the AIA Cleveland Design Awards Committee and Steve Kordalski, AIA, this lecture by Wendell Burnette, FAIA (2022 AIA Cleveland Design Awards Jury Chair) featured Wednell’s thoughts about the current state of practice and how his office, Wendell Burnette Architects, navigates the boundaries between practice and the connections to space, light, context, the environment, and community. Over 200 design professionals enjoyed this wonderful virtual lecture that focused on four topics:

• Recognizing the value of an existing place, as a vehicle in the formation of architectural ideas that promote genuine Community and healthy environments.

• Defining an approach to site-specific design - the ability of the design team to carefully consider the context of the site from many different scales, and respond to the unique circumstances of climate, views and open space.

• Using construction practices to leverage the intrinsic properties of materials as both a spatial and construction system, with a focus on minimizing embodied energy and providing long-term sustainability.

• Incorporating a demonstrated use of passive and active environmental systems as an active part of a building’s construction and use.

2023 AIA Cleveland Annual Meeting & Keynote

October 12, 2023

The AIA Cleveland Annual Meeting took place in 2023 for the first time in person since 2019! The room was filled with nearly 100 members of AIA and the design community in a vacant storefront in the recently renovated May Company Building in Downtown, Cleveland. It was a wonderful chance to get together with friends and colleagues to hear some updates from AIA Cleveland and a truly wonderful Keynote Presentation by Jason Russel, VP of Operations and Leasing for Bedrock. What’s an Architect’s Value of Time Worth in Today’s Economic / Supply Chain Conditions

October 26, 2023

In this discussion, panelists discussed a wide variety of issues and opportunities facing the design industry now and far into the future. Topics included:

• How traditional fee structures for design and construction administration align with current economic conditions and supply chain impacts

• Various methods for structuring fees and how they relate to when it is most valuable to have the Architect involved in partnership with the Construction team.

• How project delivery is evolving and may require the Architect to shift where in a project more of their time is applied to the Project.

Over 65 people attended this virtual panel discussion to learn how the investment in information gathering, analysis, and decision making in the earlier phases of a project results in fewer expensive changes later in the project. Strategic thinking that is informed, integrated and builds intelligence will have a positive impact on project quality, costs and scheduling.

AI and the (un)foreseeable Future of the Profession

September 12, 2023

At the AIA Ohio 2023 Conference in Columbus, Mark Mistur, Dean of Kent State University’s College of Environmental Design, talked about the history of AI and how it is likely to change everything - for better and/or worse. If the architectural profession is not an early and critical adopter of AI, others will fill the gap. The session will provide a backdrop of possibilities and concerns stemming from the state of the art of AI and open the floor for speculation on its best and worst potential within and as a threat to the profession.

Student Sketch & Design Workshops

February, March, April, May, September, December

Throughout the school year, the AIA Cleveland Outreach Committee, led by co-chairs Ben Kweller, AIA and James Cowan, Associate AIA, organized several Sketch Workshops in several Cleveland Public Library locations, providing students the opportunity to sit down with a few Architects and explore sketching and design. These after school programs were a wonderful opportunity to engage early with students who might later be interested in a design career.

Yoga and Wine

January - December

Throughout the year, these popular opportunities for mental and physical restoration were provided by the WIA+ Committee, led by co-chair Kaitlyn Boniecki, Associate AIA, as a way of pulling together the design community outside the regular professional working environment. Each month, expert instructors would lead participants through a variety of yoga practices, followed by a networking happy hour for an additional chance to connect with colleagues.
