DESIGN AWARDS JURY CHAIR Carol Ross Barney, FAIA, Hon. ASLA | Ross Barney Architects Carol Ross Barney, FAIA, HASLA, is the recipient of the 2023 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal, and has been in the vanguard of civic space design since founding Ross Barney Architects in 1981. With a career that spans nearly 50 years, Carol has made significant contributions to the built environment, the profession, and architectural education. From the early days in the United States Peace Corps planning National Parks in Costa Rica to recent collaborations with City Governments, Carol has relentlessly advocated that excellent design is a right, not a privilege. Her body of work, being almost exclusively in the public realm, represents this ethos and occupies a unique place within the panorama of contemporary architecture. Carol’s projects vary in type and scale, but always uphold a deep commitment to the quality of life. This commitment manifests into spaces that enrich the metropolitan experience; buildings that are environmental stewards, embodying and showcasing sustainability; and spaces that inspire young, curious minds to learn, invent, and break boundaries. At the forefront for equity in the architectural profession, Carol has long sought to move beyond her gender as a contributing factor or hindrance to success. But it’s not enough just to blaze the trail, Carol continually teaches, mentors, and empowers young architects to contribute their ideas and designs to progress the profession. A native Chicagoan, Carol is the mother of three sons and grandmother of Kai and Han.
DESIGN AWARDS JURY Juan Gabriel Moreno, AIA | JGMA (Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects) Juan Gabriel Moreno, AIA, is an award-winning architect and President/Founder of JGMA (Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects). Mr. Moreno was born in Bogota, Colombia and studied architecture at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He also lived in Florence, Italy where he studied under Superstudio founders Christiano Toraldo di Francia and Gianni Pettena. Mr. Moreno has been creating provocative works for more than 30 years. His portfolio includes having worked on projects throughout the United States and internationally. These projects represent a diverse portfolio of public and private work in typologies ranging from education, government, research, commercial, urban planning, product design and graphic design. However, in 2010 he launched JGMA with the sole purpose of transforming Chicago’s diverse communities with his architecture. Since then, JGMA has become one of the most highly acclaimed design firms in Chicago.
Trina Sandschafer, AIA, LEED AP | Kahler Slater Trina is responsible for establishing, inspiring, and directing the comprehensive development of the firm’s design dialog and culture. She leads our Chicago office, leveraging her ability to build strong relationships and key collaborators to provide strategic growth. Trina uses the power of design to serve diverse clients as a national leader for our residential, hospitality, and corporate practices. Trina is the Director of the Kahler Slater Studio, a collaborative graduate studio bringing together the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, instructed within Kahler Slater’s offices. She serves as the Chair of the UIUC Architecture Alumni Advisory Board.
ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY JURY CHAIR Dale Omori | Omori Media Dale Omori, a Cleveland-based filmmaker and photographer, loves the stories films or photographs tell. Trained as a photojournalist, Omori spent thirty years in newspapers, first as a photographer then as an editor and finally as a multimedia producer, before starting his own company, Omori Media. His films have screened at the Cleveland International Film Festival, the Chagrin Documentary Film Festival and on WVIZ ideastream. His newspaper photography has been recognized by the World Press Photo Foundation, the National Press Photographers Association and the Society for News Design. Before switching to photojournalism, Omori entered college as a fine art major and his love of the visual arts and pure design endures. He appreciates what can happen when one art form interprets another, such as when architecture is experienced through photography. The results can be stunning.
ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY JURY Larry Kasperek | Pixellary LLC Larry got his first camera when he was 10. He graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Photojournalism. He then spent 25 years in newspaper business, working as a photographer, picture editor and director of photography. The journey took him from working with film into the digital age. After his newspaper career he worked 15 years doing commercial and editorial work in a partnership in Cleveland. His own photography is varied, and he enjoy photographing with film. He photographs things that catch his eye, whether it’s the composition, color palette, the quirky and humorous, historical importance or just a good documentary portrait. Larry lives in Bay Village, OH, with his wife of 40 years. They have two adult children. His interests include Civil War and other historical photography, birding, golf and collecting vintage photography.
Stephen Travarca | Photographer Stephen is a graduate of the Cooper School of Art 1978. He is a retired Staff photographer at the Cleveland Clinic Marketing Department where he worked for 44 years. He covered a variety of assignments from Medical Documentation to Studio & Environmental Portraits, Studio Illustration, and some Architectural photography.
