2017

A Letter From the President 2017 was a Year of Growth for AIA Cleveland. There was significant growth in chapter membership and our chapter development efforts. The chapter expanded upon its advocacy endeavors and focused more on its Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion aspirations. Chapter communications and branding efforts also advanced through improvements to the weekly e-newsletter, social media accounts, the office storefront projector system, and introduction of AIA Cleveland paraphernalia. A more engaged and active Chapter was the direct result of implementing these specific objectives. AIA Cleveland Chapter membership experienced tremendous growth in 2017. At the conclusion of 2016, AIA Cleveland had a total of 486 members. As this year comes to a conclusion, our membership now stands at 523 members which is an increase of 37 members, or a 7% increase! This is the largest membership total since 2004! In addition to those professional members, the Chapter also grew to 39 Affiliate Members, an increase from 23 Affiliate members in 2016. It is my belief that this increase can be directly attributed to the Chapter’s focus on providing exciting programming, and adding membership driven initiatives such as; firm visits, Members Matter features, and the new member reception. An improved relationship with Kent State University has also provided the Chapter with an influx of recent graduates joining the AIA. AIA Cleveland relies heavily on its industry partners and sponsors commitments in order to provide exciting and diverse programming for its members. 2017 was the most successful year for raising additional funds through the annual chapter partnership program. The continuous support from our partners provided the resources needed for a successful year. The chapter was challenged this year with advocacy issues that were realized on a local level and in some cases under the national spotlight. Whether it was the proposed downsizing of the Environmental Protection Agency and the disregard of specific environmental issues, the introduction of tax reform legislation that threatens the existence of Historic Tax Credits, or creating a task force to review and propose legislation to provide Ohio Architects with Lien Rights, AIA Cleveland made its voice heard! Advocacy is an extremely important facet of what the Chapter should be involved in, so the growth in taking on these issues is welcomed.
American Institute of Architects | Cleveland Chapter
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion were such important topics for AIA Cleveland, that this year we created a new board position to address these issues specifically. The Director of Women in Architecture position was created and this representative lead the charge for our Chapter to focus on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion themes throughout the year. This year was one of the most diverse programming calendars AIA Cleveland has initiated. In addition, the Executive Board sponsored and sent two AIA Cleveland representatives to attend the Women’s Summit in Washington, DC. The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion effort will continue to grow and will be an important focus for many years to come. Lastly, improved communications and increased branding of AIA Cleveland have created a new energy within the organization and its members. The weekly e-newsletter has grown to become the primary means of communication for the chapter and the place to go to get information about the local design scene. Chapter social media accounts have continued to grow exponentially with new followers each day. A new website, t-shirts, coffee mugs, and leather notebooks will help bring attention to AIA Cleveland and in turn promote great design and architecture back to people of Cleveland! As 2017 comes to a conclusion, I would like to personally thank the AIA Cleveland Executive Board and all AIA Cleveland members for providing me with this great opportunity and privilege to serve as your President. Due to the strength of its members, sponsors, and partners, AIA Cleveland has experienced such growth and is set-up for success for years to come! An organization is only as strong as its members which is why I believe AIA Cleveland has been on the rise for the past several years! It was my pleasure to help lead so many creative individuals with the common goal of promoting architects and architecture. (AIA) Cleveland Rocks! Very Truly Yours,
Adam Yaracs. aia 2017 President AIA Cleveland

Interaction with Peers You build your career through relationships—AIA provides that network.
Joint Association Mixers Over the past year, hundreds of professionals from all fields pertaining to architecture, construction and design gathered together for our monthly Design JAMs (Joint Association Mixer). Thanks to an outpouring of sponsor support, both food and drink were provided at several of the happy hours. Locations ranged from local cocktail bars and newly established breweries, to sponsor showrooms (with awesome lake views!). Thanks to our members and sponsors for making this year an immense success! Dragon Boat Happy Hour This summer we held the inaugural Dragon Boat Happy Hour. Organized by our Young Architect and Associate Member Committee, a group of members took out two dragon boats for a paddling excursion on a Friday evening. After an evening rowing on the Cuyahoga River we enjoyed a happy hour at Merwins Wharf and continued to enjoy summer down on the river. Goodtime for Design Cruise This year’s annual “Goodtime for Design” boat cruise brought together over 400 people from 20+ Cleveland area design oriented professional organizations for an evening of networking, dancing and drinks. Sponsored raffle prizes included a Steelcase chair, Cleveland Indians tickets, a Cleveland Zoo Basket, restaurant gift cards, and other local treats. A photo booth, complete with props, gave guests the opportunity to take their memories home with them. Thanks to generous sponsor support, the evening continued at Punch Bowl Social, where drinks, light appetizers, and shuffleboard on the private balcony level were provided. We are looking forward to another successful voyage in 2018! AIA | IIDA Annual Golf Outing It was our 22nd year and another successful year for the AIA | IIDA Annual Golf Outing. This event is a joint event between AIA Cleveland Chapter and IIDA Ohio Kentucky Chapter and never disappoints. The event was held on Friday, August 11th at Sweetbriar Golf Club in Avon Lake, Ohio. This year’s theme was Kentucky Derby and many of our participants were dressed to the nines in their derby hat and derby attire. Golfing was enjoyed by over 120 golfers on what started out as a rainy morning but eventually turned out to be a decent summer day. After making their divots, attendees enjoyed a buffet style dinner outside where donated items were available to be won during the Chinese raffle.

To Further the Profession As a unified body, we create greater visibility for the profession
Membership and Participation AIA Cleveland is working to create an engaged and connected local professional design community. This is being accomplished through a focus of communicating membership value, general and personal invitations to participate, promoting member participation in existing or new committees, and meeting with firms during firm visits to re-connect professionally. Through quality programming and good fellowship, local architects are attracted, or re-attracted, to AIA membership. In 2017, we grew our membership by 7%. At 523 members, our membership is now at its largest total since 2004! Membership Breakfast In February of this year, 80+ firm leaders and AIA Cleveland members attended the Spring 2017 Membership Breakfast held at Merwins Wharf. The meeting included an AIA Cleveland chapter update from President Adam Yaracs, AIA along with other board members and leaders. Following the update there was a keynote session from Brian Zimmerman, CEO of Cleveland Metroparks. This was a great opportunity for members to learn more about the Chapter’s plans for 2017. Firm Visits The AIA Cleveland Board is proactively scheduling visits with local firms to re-connect our professional community, to discuss ideas to strengthen our community, to share resources among members, and to invite colleagues to rejoin the organization. Between 2014-2017, the board has visited over 20 firms and has generated great ideas and goodwill and shared conversations as colleagues about bettering the profession together. These visits have been crucial to membership growth in 2017. Mentorship On its third year, the AIA Mentorship Program continues to grow. We are elated to hear so many success stories this year of our emerging professionals building confidence in the workplace, mapping a tangible path to licensure, and achieving milestones in their careers. We encourage all Associates and Young Architects to sign up! Browse available mentors, and sign up by visiting AIA Cleveland’s website at aiacleveland.com/mentor.

ARE Study Sessions This year, the Young Architects and Associate Members Committee coordinated five ARE study sessions covering various topics of the exams. Thanks to help from local experts in the architecture community, we were able to strengthen the knowledge of our members and better prepare them for these important tests. These sessions will continue in 2018 as the growth of our emerging professionals is important to our profession! Kent State Career Fair In February, several AIA Cleveland members attended the annual Kent State University Career Fair on behalf of the Chapter. This event provided an important interface between students, recent graduates, and .professionals. The benefits of AIA membership were shared with students in attendance. Advocacy Ohio Lien Rights Lien Rights allow those who add value to a site to be paid from that value; lien rights allow architects to secure their contracts to the land that they are benefiting. Upon learning that Ohio is the only state not offering these rights to architects, in 2017, local members instigated the creation of an AIA Ohio Task Force, worked with a statewide group of architects to research the issues, and then proposed a direction to the AIA Ohio Board. This report was approved and in 2018 the Task Force will work towards legislation for state legislative adoption. Tax Reform and Historic Tax Credits (Letter to Ohio Senators) I am writing to you on behalf of the Cleveland Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and its 520 plus members. As President of this Chapter, I need to share with you the deep concern of our community about the tax reform currently debated in the U.S. Senate. The issue of tax reform and the proposed removal of Historic tax credits has been covered extensively in our weekly e-newsletter that reaches over 3500 architects, interior designers, developers, contractors, and allied professionals alike. Overwhelmingly the response has been unfavorable to the removal of such Historic tax credits from the proposed tax reform legislation. I urge you to work towards keeping and even enhancing both the current credit for the rehabilitation of pre-1936 structures and the credit for rehabilitation of properties on the National Register of Historic Places. They are essential to keeping investment in our communities at healthy levels while helping protect our states historic architecture – both extremely important for Ohio’s future. Historic tax credits are a valuable economic development tool for all states and often introduce funds into the federal budget exceeding the initial investment. The state of Ohio, specifically the city of Cleveland, needs this to continue. These programs in Rustbelt regions and rural Ohio counties alike have transformed entire neighborhoods for the better. Eliminating Historic Tax Credits from the current tax code would be devastating for economic growth in areas of the state that this tax reform legislation targets. I ask that you please be a good steward of your constituents’ interest in Historic tax credits. The importance of this issue should not be underestimated or overlooked and it is my hope that you will see the value in preserving such tax credits that have helped communities rebuild, redevelop, and flourish. AIA Cleveland would like to offer help or support to you and your staff in any way with regards to this matter in order to help protect these vital resources. Members Matter AIA Cleveland is pleased to recognize those members who have recently become registered, have achieved a significant milestone in the profession or their practice or those members who have been recognized within the profession with a special honor or award. The membership of AIA Cleveland is key to advancing the practice of architecture and in advancing the mission of the AIA.

Women in Architecture and Design Women’s History Month: Susan Skarsgard: Intersection of Architecture+Design+Culture and a rich career at General Motors
Designed to appeal to Cleveland’s larger design community, AIA Cleveland was thrilled to welcome Susan Skarsgard, an artist and designer from Ann Arbor, Michigan, known internationally for her fine art works, artist books, design and calligraphy. Her lecture was structured around an unusual career path that has wandered through some of the most interesting and important legacies of design in America. It included an insider’s view of the General Motors Technical Center campus, designed by Eero Saarinen, and considered to be a modern masterpiece of industrial architecture. A deeper dive followed inside this highly-controlled campus at the Global Design headquarters, to see where GM vehicles are imagined today. This story was told with a profound link to GM’s design history and with a unique perspective on how her corporate career has been informed and influenced by her personal art work and relentless curiosity. For women seeking to forge their career paths on their own terms, Ms. Skarsgard was an exceptional role model. Over 100 members of the design community and the general public attended.
NeXXtRead
The first NeXXt Read this year explored the topic of “Negotiation,” led by Hallie DelVillan, Assoc. AIA, and Jodi van der Weil, AIA. Members explored the idea of “making the world negotiable,” knowing your worth, and learning the patterns and barriers of negotiation with respect to different genders. The second NeXXt Read focused on the topic of “Firm Leadership” and was led by Sandra Madison, AIA, and Jill V. Akins, AIA. Participants explored the complexity of starting one’s firm or becoming a leader within one’s firm or organization. Both sessions generated insightful and engaging discussions and debate, and offered a pre-event reception for networking opportunities, encouraging participants to engage in WIA initiatives, and if interested, take advantage of AIA’s mentorship program.
Cleveland Metroparks Nature Hike
The Saturday morning Cleveland MetroParks hike was introduced this Fall as a casual, family-friendly event, open to members and friends of the Chapter alike. Intended to promote camaraderie and informal networking, it is especially organized for connecting with members that struggle to attend the Chapter’s weekday and evening events. The hike offered the opportunity to enjoy Cleveland’s beautiful fall colors and nature preserves. Snacks were provided by Schirmer Construction, who built the unique stairs on this reservation, allowing access to the one of the most spectacular gorge views in the Emerald Necklace. We hope to make this an annual event.

Hard Hat and Design Award Tours The Palindrome Home The Palindrome Home, a single-family residence, is a 2-story new-build that resides on a half-acre within the historic Ambler Heights district of Cleveland Heights. The project scope consists of a full basement and two stories (1,250 sf per floor) above ground, with an attached garage. The goal was to have this modern structure blend into its surroundings while quietly contributing to the eclectic residential styles in the neighborhood. The house is composed of two flat-roofed boxes: the garage and the residence. While not designed to a specific sustainable design standard, it was practically designed with high insulation values and exceeds Passivhaus standards for air infiltration. Edgewater Beach House Edgewater Beach House, the Cleveland Metropark’s iconic new lakefront public facility is located at Edgewater Park on Cleveland’s near west side waterfront. Designed by Bialosky Cleveland and built by construction manager A.M. Higley Co., the new, 14,638sf facility utilized a unique research and stakeholder engagement design process, provides new concessions, restrooms, staff support staffs, and a second level public open-air pavililion with a seasonal bar and fireplace along with extensive site work including a new pedestrian connector bridge. Located in an extreme micro-climate on the shores of Lake Erie, the Beach House employs best practices in resilient design principles informed by wind driven sand migration and wave-run up studies. Cleveland Clinic Health Education Campus Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic are breaking down barriers in health education with a brand-new, 485,000-square-foot Health Education Campus to promote collaborative learning. At the Health Education Campus, located near Cleveland Clinic and approximately one-half mile from Case Western Reserve’s main campus, students from the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine and the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences will not only learn about their own strengths, but also develop a deeper understanding of how all of these fields complement each other to provide optimal patient care. Makers Series Tour: Freddy Hill Design This year’s MAKERS Tour featured craftsman Freddy Hill of Freddy Hill Design. “Freddy Hill is a rock star. No seriously, he was a real life ROCK STAR!! With a passion for music and craftsmanship Freddy is the full package. After taking his musical act on the road he started making furniture and other pieces. Lecture and Exhibit Series Michael Ford: Hip Hop Architecture
In April, Michael Ford, The Hip Hop Architect, delivered an engaging presentation for AIA Cleveland’s annual Spring Design Lecture. Set in the creative industrial showroom of Rustbelt Reclamation, nearly 175 architects, design professionals, educators, students, and music enthusiasts gathered to hear Ford speak on modernism’s relationship to hip hop culture. Using hip hop lyrics as dialogue, commentary, and counterpoints, a DJ provided a live soundtrack that enlivened the lecture. He also presented his own design work, ranging from urban furniture to the in-progress Universal Hip Hop Museum in the Bronx. During Ford’s visit to Cleveland, he visited John Hay High School of Architecture and Design for an afternoon workshop with students. Steve Litt interviewed him during his stay, and published an article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer that covered his work, his background, and his advocacy initiatives, such as the traveling Hip Hop Architecture Camp. Ford seemed truly inspired by our city and our design community. AIA Cleveland is thankful to Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Rustbelt Reclamation, NOMA, and The Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative for partnering for this memorable and impactful event.
Jonathan Jackson: WeShouldDoitAll
In October, AIA Cleveland hosted Jonathan Jackson, the co-founder of WeShouldDoItAll in Brooklyn NY, for a design lecture entitled Quietly, We’ve Been Very Loud. The lecture was held in the beautifully restored lobby of the Calfee Building and received generous event sponsorship from the project team behind the award winning design including Calfee Halter & Griswold, CRM Companies, Cleveland Construction and Vocon as well as supporting sponsors NOMA Cleveland and the Contractors Assistance Association. Jonathan shared the multifaceted design work of his firm WeShouldDoItAll that includes branding, interactive, books, environmental and spatial projects. His inspiring lecture gave an in-depth view into the firms 10+ year history from the first Nike product display to the Community Galleries of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The lecture was attended by a diverse group of design professionals that included architects, interior designers, graphic designers and industrial designers as well as design students, who were able to attend at no cost.
Neil Denari: Exhibit
Eleven inkjet drawings featuring unbuilt visions by Denari’s studio NMDA are showcased in his “Displaced Buildings in Aperiodic City” exhibition. NMDA created the drawings over the past seven years. Ranging from port terminals to museums, each project was originally designed for specific contexts in various cities.
Tim Hunsicker: Designing with Impact
Being an architect in a first world country is a privilege. We have so much technology, education and skilled peole compared to developing or underdeveloped countries. Tim Hunsicker’s role with ABWE International’s Project office is to provide project design and management input on projects for teammates around the world. These teammates range from church planters to surgeons to educators and everything in between. During this short presentation, Tim will be presenting two unique and diverse projects that have allowed him to introduce the building design advances being made in the U.S. to these regions of the world in culturally appropriate ways. You will see that not everything in other parts of the world looks like what we hae in North America, but it is still able to have similar results and impact.

Summer Design Lecture Series Summer Lecture Series Mission: To expose, promote, and celebrate Cleveland design excellence, of all project types and sizes through an inspiring and provoking lecture series from high-caliber architects. Practitioners of small, medium, and large firms share their portfolios with fellow architects, and the public alike to serve as a window into their practice, design aesthetic, and design process. Ronald Reed, FAIA On the Value of Silence: The thing that underpins Ron’s work is a belief that architecture can provide a respite from the barrage of stimulus that has become an integral part of our existences. If this is perceived as a form of “noise”, then our built environments may have the potential to counterbalance the static electricity and keep us centered. Dave Robar, AIA, IIDA Repurposing with Purpose: Three projects will focus on purposeful renovation of existing structures. These projects have transformed the work lives of varied commercial organizations, through strategic repurposing of both memorable and nondescript structures. These spaces reframe the expectations of the typical workspace and leverage the unique attributes of each building to communicate company brand and culture, foster collaboration and innovation and align business strategies with the original real estate objectives. Steven Kordalski, AIA Five Design Thoughts: 5 design thoughts which are a constant in projects Kordalski Architects designs were outlined. These ideas act as the cornerstone of our process no matter the project size. Using examples from the interior architecture portion of our portfolio the 5 design thoughts were expanded upon. Robert Maschke, FAIA Change Agency: Disruptive innovation helps create a new market and value network. Robert Maschke Architects utilizes the innovation of redefining boundaries through t he formation of alliances with other disciplines, leveraging relationships, and ARCHITECT everything to expand into a more sustainable and resilient design studio. This allows RMA t he opportunity to create architecture of complex spatial effects while exposing contemporary design to a broad and diverse public.

Improving Communications and Branding New AIA Cleveland Website
The end of 2017 saw the release of the re-designed AIA Cleveland website. The new website is much more visual and user-friendly than the previous one. Members are the primary focus of the re-design. With a new look, it is the goal of the chapter to promote architecture and architects to the general public, advocate for local firms and architects, and to feature its members!
New AIA Cleveland Office Projector System
The new AIA Cleveland Center for Architecture and Design window projection system has been in the works for several years. 2017 finally saw this effort come to a conclusion. The new projection system displays work by local firm and architects on to the storefront system throughout the day and evening. Located in the heart of Cleveland’s Theatre District, this new addition to the office will dramatically increase AIA Cleveland’s public awareness. In the future, we hope to showcase and advocate for the great work that is being done by Cleveland firms and members.
New AIA Cleveland Merchandise
AIA Cleveland has lnot had its own merchandise in quite some time. This year the chapter has set out to change this. The end of 2017 saw new t-shirts, coffee mugs, and leather notebooks branded with AIA Cleveland available for purchase. With new merchandise, we hope to increase the visibility and awareness of AIA Cleveland. In 2018 we look to add more items to our store!
