Dee Perry

Dee Perry began her broadcasting career in 1976, and worked for more than a dozen years in commercial radio. In 1989 Dee took a job with Cleveland Public Radio, which became the multimedia content provider ideastream in 2001, following a merger with WVIZ/PBS . Since then Dee has written, produced, and conducted thousands of interviews about arts and culture for radio, TV, and the web. Although retired from full-time broadcasting Dee continues to serve as a freelance researcher, interviewer, and host for various community organizations and events, like, for instance, the AIA Design Awards

Matthew Kreilich, FAIA

Snow Kreilich Architects 2018 AIA Architecture Firm Award Recipient

As design principal and partner of Snow Kreilich Architects, Matthew Kreilich is the heart of the firm’s collaborative working model taking an active role in both strategic and detail design resolutions in the studio. His passion lies in the belief that in addition to solving complex and pragmatic needs of a client’s program, design has the transformative power to enhance our everyday life experiences. Matthew provides design leadership and insight into all of the firm’s projects, as well as acting as the project designer on some of the studios’ most significant projects. Matthew’s design leadership and experience continue to be recognized both locally and nationally. Matt was recently honored with the AIA National Young Architect Award for outstanding design leadership and locally recognized with the Minneapolis/St.Paul’s Business Journal’s 40 under 40. His work has received numerous Awards including MN AIA Honor Awards, the National AIA Honor Award, Progressive Architecture Award and the Holcim Award. Matthew was also the recipient of the prestigious Ralph Rapson Traveling Study Fellowship. He continues to balance practice and academic endeavors and has recently taught graduate design studios at the University of Minnesota and Syracuse University and participated in design reviews at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and at Washington University St Louis. Matthew continues to dedicate time back to the profession, serving on national AIA honor award juries, presenting the firm’s work at universities, national conventions and professional organizations and currently is serving on the board of the MN Architectural Foundation advancing scholarship opportunities for the next generation of architects.


AIA Design Awards Jury Tim Carl, FAIA | HGA Since joining HGA in 1998, Tim has built a reputation for authentic, award-winning architecture. As CEO, his innovative leadership strengthens and guides the firm’s ongoing contributions to the built environment. As a designer, Tim’s holistic approach to architecture artfully connects ideas about program, technology and environmental impact with a deep understanding of place. The strength of the relationships he builds fosters creative, transformative solutions that revitalize organizations and enrich communities. Tim’s work has received numerous national and state awards. His projects have been published in Architectural Record, ARCHITECT, Contract and Dwell. In 2013 the Minneapolis Star Tribune identified Tim as one of the Twin Cities’ notable artists of the year and one of the most influential architects in the State of Minnesota.

Mamie Harvey, AIA | ALLiiANCE Mamie has served as lead designer on numerous life science, physical science and interdisciplinary building projects for both public and corporate clients. A skillful practitioner of thoughtful planning and inspired design, she works closely with clients to articulate a thorough project vision. A leader for our firm’s science and technology projects, and our overall sustainability initiatives for all projects, Mamie’s focus on energy efficiency is intensified by her involvement in high hazard and stringent laboratory environments that have significant safety and environmental impacts. Mamie has maintained a lifelong interest in the principles of Montessori education and has designed unique learning environments. She has successfully translated the basic principles of a “prepared environment” into dynamic design solutions for academic and corporate clients. Mamie is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Minnesota. She received the AIA Minnesota Young Architect Award in 2014 and has presented at numerous conferences on research and learning environments.


AIA Design Awards Makers Jury Jury Chair

Steven Kordalski, AIA | Kordalski Architects Inc. Since 1984, Steven has acted as president and lead designer of Kordalski Architects Inc., a boutique type architectural / interior firm specializing in quality design projects. The firm has received numerous AIA design awards, and in 2014 was awarded the AIA Ohio Gold Medal. In 2012, Steven received the prestigious Cleveland Arts Prize for Design. He has participated on numerous AIA award program juries at the state and national levels.

Olga Andriyevska, AIA | DLR Group Olga Andriyevska, Project Architect and Associate at DLR Group, is a crucial member of the global architecture & engineering firm’s Cleveland studio. She is an advocate for integrated design, craftsmanship, and contextual sensitivity. Her passion for the profession has earned her recognition with AIA Ohio. Having lived, studied, and worked in both Europe and the United States, Ms. Andriyevska draws on her diverse background as an inspiration for her approach to architecture. Ms. Andriyevska is fluent in German, Italian, and Russian.

Crystal DeCastro Knapik, AIA | Vocon A project designer at Vocon, Crystal DeCastro Knapik has seven years of design and project management experience with residential, healthcare, corporate office, retail and development projects. She began her career in architecture at the University of California in Berkeley, then continued to Ohio State University for her master’s in architecture. Her diverse project experience enables her to design solutions that balance many perspectives and create functional and enjoyable environments.

Robert Maschke, FAIA | Robert Maschke Architects Robert Maschke, FAIA, founded his eponymous firm in 1997 with the belief that a regional practice based in Cleveland, Ohio could contribute to global architectural culture. Many of Maschke’s civic, cultural, higher education, and residential projects have contributed to Cleveland’s built environment while also being internationally published and recognized. The recipient of many awards, including the Cleveland Arts Prize for design, AIA Ohio Gold Medal Firm Award, and national honors from the American Institute of Architects, Robert is committed to advancing the practice of architecture while serving the community. Currently, Maschke serves on several civic and cultural boards.

Kathryn Strand

Kathryn Strand is an Associate Professor in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design at Kent State University where she coordinates the First Year Foundation Sequence and conducts undergraduate design studios, architectural history, and a theory seminar on media and representation. Strand received a Bachelor of Science degree in Fine Arts and Art History from the University of Wisconsin Madison. In 2002, she received a Master of Architecture degree from University of Pennsylvania where she spent a semester studying at the Architecture Association in London and was a participant in the International Laboratory of Architecture and Environmental Design held in Venice, Italy.

Timothy Bell

Tim Bell earned both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Architecture at Columbia University in New York. Bell is a formally-trained photographer but by-and-large is self-taught, owing in part, to a life-long study of composition, lighting and abstraction and further enhanced by his training as an architect. As a professional for more than 20 years, he has shot for numerous magazines, including Architectural Digest, The New York Times, Interior Design, Elle DĂŠcor, House Beautiful, This Old House, Met Home, NY Spaces, Business Week, Fortune, Fast Company, Forbes, Time, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. Advertising clients include Knoll, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, Starwood Hotels, among others. Recent work includes pro-bono projects for Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club and DIFFA. He has work in private collections and is also represented by Corbis Images.


Ivan Bernal

Ivan Bernal is the Director of the Architecture Program at Kent State University College of Architecture and Environmental Design, and Guest Curator at the A+D Museum in Los Angeles. He holds a Master Degree from Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). Working as a designer, educator, and curator, Ivan is interested in the current and future role of Architecture, its cultural impact, and its evolution in different settings and venues. He has served as full-time faculty at Syracuse University School of Architecture and SCI-Arc. Prior to opening his practice, Ivan led studios in South America and The United States. His work has been exhibited in galleries around the world, and his research sits at the intersection of formal familiarity and non-traditional representation techniques exploring alternate realities.

Gianna Commito

Gianna Commito earned a BFA from The New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Alfred, NY and an MFA from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA. The artist has been included in exhibitions at Fleisher/Ollman Gallery, Philadelphia, PA; The Akron Art Museum, Akron, OH; Lehman College Art Department, New York, NY; Webster State University, Ogden, UT; MOCA Cleveland, Cleveland, OH; National Academy, New York, NY; and the Drawing Center, New York, NY; among others. Commito is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including the Ohio Arts Council Award; the Cleveland Art Prize; Artist in Residence at Yaddo, Saratoga Springs, NY; and the PollockKrasner Foundation Grant. In 2018, her work was featured in the inaugural edition of the FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art in Cleveland, OH. Commito lives and works in Kent, OH.

As a national organization, the American Institute of Architects is the voice of the architectural profession and a resource to its members in service to society. As the local chapter, AIA Cleveland is a professional association that promotes the value of architecture and design, fosters collegiality, advocates for local members, educates, and supports architects as leaders in the community.

Governance

The AIA Cleveland Executive Board believes that sound principles of governance are a key element of our business, and as such the Board is deeply involved in providing continuing insight and clarity into our governance process. Design Awards Committee Committee Chairs Aaron Hill, AIA

Design Awards Committee Co-Chair Bialosky Cleveland

Aaron is an Associate Principal with Bialosky Cleveland. He currently serves on the AIA Cleveland board, the AIA Ohio board and as the chair of the Union Club’s Arts and Culture committee. He is a graduate of The University of Florida and Georgia Tech. In his free time, he enjoys golfing, snowboarding and spending time with his 4-year-old twins.

Adam Yaracs, AIA Design Awards Committee Co-Chair Perspectus Architecture

Adam is a graduate of Kent State University, a Project Architect with Perspectus Architecture, and an Adjunct Faculty member at Kent State University’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design where he teaches First Year Design Studio. In addition to teaching he is also the Faculty Advisor for the Kent State University AIAS Chapter. He currently serves as AIA Cleveland Director of Communications and is the Immediate Past President. In his spare time, Adam enjoys playing volleyball, hockey, and is a dedicated and passionate Pittsburgh sports fan and season ticket holder.


Committee Members Beau Bock, AIA Bialosky Cleveland

Beau is an Associate with Bialosky Cleveland. Growing up outside of Orlando, he graduated from the University of Florida and Georgia Tech with a degree in Design and Architecture. He is also currently an Adjunct Faculty member at Kent State University’s College of Architecture and Environment Design. Beau enjoys spending time outdoors and is an avid runner, having completed 16 marathons.

Kate Csontos, Assoc. AIA HSB Architects + Engineers

Kate is a Principal and Project Manager at HSB architects + Engineers who graduated with her Masters in Architecture from Kent State University’s CAED. When she is not managing Client accounts or traveling across the US for work, she leads HSB’s local volunteering and company sporting events, further encouraging team comradery and giving back to the community. Although work is her first priority, Kate also enjoys participating in Fantasy Football, sketching Disney characters, snowboarding, and jumping horses year round..

Hallie DelVillan, Assoc. AIA Bialosky Cleveland

Hallie DelVillan serves as Marketing Director and Associate at Bialosky Cleveland. As a nontraditional practitioner, Hallie defines her role as a strategic coach, helping architects and clients become their best. In 2016, Hallie was honored with a Presidential Citation for her leadership, council, and for championing equity within our chapter. In 2018, she was named to the Top 25 Under 35 Young Professionals in Cleveland. She is a reoccurring juror of student work at her alma mater, Kent State University. She resides in a century home in Akron with fiancé, Charlie, and their pitt-mixes, Sadie and Zeus.

Lauren Konopka, Assoc. AIA HSB Architects + Engineers

Lauren is a Design Manager for HSB Architects + Engineers located in the Flats East Bank of Cleveland. She graduated with a Master of Architecture from Kent State University, CUDC and has been with the firm since 2012. Lauren focuses on tenant space and has had the opportunity to manage corporate, interior renovations across the country including commercial office, healthcare, retail, and industrial projects. Lauren has served as the Director of Camaraderie for the past two years and is excited to renew the position for the next term.


Melanie Lewis, AIA Richard L. Bowen + Associates

Melanie is an architect and principal at Richard L. Bowen + Associates Inc. She is a graduate of Kent State University CAED and a recent member of AIA. Melanie keeps busy with her two young children and loves introducing them to “all things Cleveland” every chance she gets.

Matt Lindsay, Assoc. AIA Maschke Architects

Matt joined Robert Maschke Architects in 2006 and over the past 12 years, has been responsible for the design and execution of many award-winning projects, published nationally and internationally. Matt’s designs and research focus on the architectural effects of origami-like folding to delineate volumetric enclosure and strategically blur interior and exterior distinctions. The ongoing discourse of architecture in and around RMA’s studio strategically draws upon contemporary architectural precedent and research, implementing fabrication techniques in modeling and construction to develop uniquely resourceful and efficient solutions to complex spatial and aesthetic constraints.

Marc Lins, Assoc. AIA MCG Architecture

Marc is a graduate of Kent State University and a Project Specialist at MCG Architecture. With a focus in Architectural Visualization, he enjoys creating and rendering virtual environments to help clarify the design intent to prospective clients. In his free time, Marc plays volleyball, rock climbs, and cycles.

Hillary Lyon, Affiliate AIA CTL Engineering

Hillary handles Business Development for CTL Engineering, and has been in the Architecture/Engineering/Construction industry for more than 6 years, with over 20 years’ experience marketing different products and services. Hillary is currently pursuing an Executive MBA at Case Western Reserve University, is a University of Denver undergraduate, who also has a graphic design degree from the Art Institute of Colorado. An experienced events and development professional, Hillary serves on several local boards/ committees, and is a supporter of arts and culture in NEO.


David Maniet, AIA Maniet Architects

David is a graduate of Kent State University, an Architect with Maniet Architects, and a member of Lakewood’s Architectural Board of Review. For AIA Cleveland, he is the Director of Young Architects ans Associate Members, assisting young members along the path to becoming licensed and encouraging networking through YAAM events. He is the recipient of the 2016 AIA Cleveland Emerging Professional Award. David enjoys traveling to experience architecture and urban environments around the globe.

Harrison Pappas, Affiliate AIA WD Partners/Cleveland Institute of Art

Harrison currently serves as the Chapter Promotions Associate at AIA Cleveland and Independent Contractor at WD Partners in Columbus, OH. He is a double major Graphic Design and Interior Architecture senior at The Cleveland Institute of Art who will be graduating in Spring 2019. Outside of school and work Harry enjoys exploring new places around the Greater Cleveland area. His favorite spots to hang out with friends are Punchbowl Social and Tabletop Board Game Café in Ohio City.

Allan Renzi, AIA Richard L. Bowen + Associates

Allan is a principal and VP of Operations at Richard L. Bowen + Associates Inc. He is a graduate of Kent State University College of Architecture and The Ohio State University where he was also a member of their NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championship team. Allan enjoys spending time with his family, being involved in his community, and following his favorite sports teams. Allan is proud to see AIA Cleveland’s recent successes and looks forward to helping continue the momentum as next year’s Past President.

Dave Robar, AIA Vocon

Dave is a Director at Vocon in Cleveland. With over 30 years of designing and directing projects, Dave knows that communication is crucial to developing a relationship with a client that unleashes the best in the team designing the new space and, in turn, those who use that new space. He is a Past President of AIA Cleveland and currently serves as the chapter’s Director of Development. Dave also serves as Chair of the Lakewood Architectural Board of Review and a member of the ACE Mentor Cleveland Board of Directors.


Nick Slaughterbeck, Assoc. AIA Onyx Creative

Nick Slaughterbeck is a graduate of Kent State University’s dual Master of Architecture/ Master of Business Administration program and has been involved in the Cleveland AIA Design Awards for the last four years. He currently works at Onyx Creative as a Project Manager and designer where he enjoys the challenges, both unique and every day, that the career puts forth. Nick is pursuing his licensure and enjoys being an active member in the AIA Cleveland community.

Christopher Toddy, AIA Christopher @ Architects LLC

Christopher is President of Christopher @ Architects LLC and is currently President-elect of AIA Cleveland. He also co-leads within the AIA Ohio Payment Assurance Taskforce, the AIA Small Firm Exchange national committee, and the local Cleveland 2030 District. Chris works on advocacy, leadership, and sustainability issues locally on behalf of our professional community. Chris understands that teaming often fosters a better world and a vision sets the direction. Chris is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the Charles Moore Program at the University of Texas at Austin

Jodi Van der Wiel, AIA Vocon

Jodi Van der Wiel, AIA, NCARB, NCIDQ, LEED AP BD+C is a Design Director with Vocon. She began her education studying Fine Art and completed her architectural degree at Iowa State University’s College of Design. For many years Jodi has been an active member on design review for the East Region and Downtown/Flats design review boards for the City of Cleveland. In 2015 Jodi co-founded AIA Cleveland’s Women in Architecture Committee and assisted in the creation of our chapter’s mentorship program. She is currently serving as First Vice President for AIA Cleveland.

Patty is AIA Cleveland’s Executive Director, and a graduate of Cleveland State University. She enjoys working with all of our members, sponsors, vendors, community partners, designers and volunteers to fulfill the chapter’s mission and build a stronger architectural and design community.
