2019 A Community of Leaders for AIA Cleveland
03
A Letter From the President AIA Cleveland – a community of leaders – has experienced another great year! Our record membership count is 550 and counting. New and experienced leaders stepped up to create a flurry of activities, symposia, tours, and educational options all year, as we started to implement our new Chapter Strategic Plan. Standing committees were active while new committees and taskforces were created. The chapter continues to grow in strength, opportunity, and relationships as the chapter increased its community presence and professional connection. We had a wonderfully busy year, full of fun, connection, and learning! The WIA+ Committee again created a wonderful March event for a large crowd and Negotiating Skills Workshops in August. COTE discussed sustainability with speaker Roger Wang, AIA in April. In May, our Design Cruise shared superb camaraderie with allied professionals, contractors, and material representatives, and the Celebration for Preservation celebrated the historic quality and character of Cleveland. In June, members attended the national convention; some presented their expertise. In July, Speakers-on-the-Square, hosted by our YAAM Committee, celebrated local grassroot sustainability. In August, SandFest – its competitive sand castles, volleyball and cornhole -- was enjoyed by thousands and raised funds for scholarships. Our Annual Meeting was in October and our incredible Design Awards Celebration was in November. In between, the Programming Committee hosted a variety of excellent tours, speakers, and hands-on sessions while the Camaraderie Committee hosted monthly joint happy hours. We closed out the year by thanking our sponsors with a holiday party. Because of our passion and our commitment to developing leaders and excellence, we proudly do more than any chapter our size, and we do it well. Following the AIA Knowledge Community structure, we encourage local members to start new chapter committees based upon their professional interests. This is an opportunity to increase member participation American Institute of Architects | Cleveland Chapter
while bringing together those with similar passions to create something to forward the chapter. Our Committee on the Environment restarted. The Designfor-Aging and Healthcare Committees started anew. Each group attracted a core group of members working towards chapter initiatives and projects. We expanded Advocacy and Community Outreach in 2019. Members advocate within our community by supporting the betterment of local projects with their professional expertise. The Advocacy Committee and Zoning Taskforce worked with City leaders to improve processes and new zoning, and with politicians on issues related to the built environment. In addition to SandFest, the Community Outreach Committee initiated its student art competition with the Shaker Heights School District. Members work with K-12 students to help raise their environmental awareness. In 2019, the chapter supported local leadership development through its Cleveland Connect AIA Mentorship Program. I thank all members who have donated their time to professionally mentor our next generation. And, the chapter helped local members attend the AIA national Women’s Leadership Summit in September. By supporting this type of leadership growth, the chapter and our local design profession genuinely benefit. All of this good, productive, meaningful work is celebrated by funding partners that help make this possible. Thank you! These partners helped to create a tremendous year of growth and opportunity. The chapter is strong and growing stronger. We all look forward to next year being even better under the leadership of Jodi van der Wiel, AIA.

Interaction with Peers You build your career through relationships—AIA provides that network.
Joint Association Mixers Over the past year, hundreds of professionals from all fields pertaining to architecture, construction and design gathered together for our monthly Design JAMs (Joint Association Mixer). Thanks to an outpouring of sponsor support, both food and drink were provided at several of the happy hours. Locations ranged from local cocktail bars and newly established breweries, to sponsor showrooms (with awesome lake views!). Thanks to our members and sponsors for making this year an immense success! Dragon Boat Happy Hour This summer we held the 3rd annual Dragon Boat Happy Hour. Organized by our Young Architect and Associate Member Committee, a group of members took out two dragon boats for a paddling excursion on a Friday evening. After an evening rowing on the Cuyahoga River we enjoyed a happy hour at Merwins Wharf and continued to enjoy summer down on the river. Design Cruise Line This year’s 10th annual “Design Cruise Line” boat cruise signaled the beginning of summer bringing together several Cleveland area design organizations for an evening of networking and fun. On board the privately chartered Goodtime III cruise ship, 400+ guests were treated to pizza, drinks, raffle prizes, and a 50/50 raffle benefiting the American Planning Association Scholarship fund. A photo booth, complete with props, gave guests the opportunity to take their memories home with them. Thanks to generous sponsor support, the evening continued at The Flat Iron Cafe, where drinks and light appetizers were provided. We look forward to continuing this annual event in 2020! AIA | IIDA Annual Golf Outing It was our 24th year and another successful year for the AIA IIDA Annual Golf Outing. This event is a joint event between AIA Cleveland Chapter and IIDA Ohio Kentucky / Cleveland Akron Chapter and never disappoints. The event was held on Friday, August 9th at Sweetbriar Golf Club in Avon Lake, Ohio. This year’s outing theme was a Hawaiian Luau and many of our participants dressed up in their coconut tops, grass skirts, tropical print and flower leis. The weather was also beautifully tropical like a day on the beach. Golfing was enjoyed by over 100 golfers and after making their divots, attendees enjoyed an outdoor, buffet-style dinner. Items donated by our generous sponsors were available to be won during the raffle.

Committee on the Environment (COTE) On the heels of 2030 worldwide initiatives AIA Cleveland’s Committee on the Environment has been reformed to educate and to advocate for responsible design practices which enhance environmental performance and occupant wellbeing through design excellence. The monthly committee meetings have focused on round table discussions centered on the Top Ten Toolkit. In July, in collaboration with the YAAM, the COTE hosted Speakers on the Square: #Sustainable Cleveland, a panel discussion which unpacked how responsible planning can impact the physical, emotional, and social well-being of occupants in Cleveland and how proven infrastructure can elevate the human experience and elevate the environment as whole. In November, AIA Cleveland’s COTE co-hosted an event with the Cleveland 2030 District on Environmental Health and the Impacts on Human Health. This session covered how our environment impacts our health, the effects of water and air quality, and the diseases and illnesses that are exacerbated by environmental issues and how we may mitigate these issues within the built environment. Advocacy • Continued constructive exploration of ways to improve the design, zoning, and permitting approval process with City of Cleveland Development Cluster staff. • Met with local, state, and federal elected leaders to advance the interests of AIA Cleveland members, including advocacy for lien rights protections (state), engagement of AIA members in school security conversations (state, federal), and against interior design licensure (state). • Participation in the Cleveland Form-Based Code Pilot Project by providing design and construction feedback to the consultants and will continue to offer charrette exploration of proposed approaches. • Met with firm leaders from across Cleveland to validate the local, state, and national advocacy priorities and effectively focus local efforts. • Commenced an inclusive conversation about design diversity and the continuum of outreach to future professionals from underrepresented communities. • Email AIA Cleveland if you are interested in helping advocate for architects. Design for Aging Committee This was the inaugural year for the AIA Cleveland DFA Committee, whose mission is to foster innovative design to improve the quality of life for seniors. The main initiative for this committee is to explore trends, features and amenities for creating a successful natural occurring retirement community (NORC) through a collaborative study with a local developer and students. 2019 | Year in Review

To Further the Profession As a unified body, we create greater visibility for the profession Membership and Participation AIA Cleveland is working to create an engaged and connected local professional design community. This is being accomplished through a focus of communicating membership value, general and personal invitations to participate, promoting member participation in existing or new committees, and meeting with firms during firm visits to re-connect professionally. Through quality programming and good fellowship, local architects are attracted, or re-attracted, to AIA membership. In 2019, we grew our membership to 550 members which is now at an all-time high. Leaders Breakfast “Declared and supported leadership is the refining fire by which Talent becomes Ability,” said our President. The chapter hosted its spring Leaders Breakfast at Ohio Desk on Tuesday, May 7. Chapter leaders and firm leaders attended to hear about issues facing the profession and the current board initiatives to address those issues. Participants were introduced to our “We are a Community of Leaders” 2019 chapter theme. The guest speaker was Mr. Edward Rybka, City of Cleveland Chief of Regional Development. Mentorship On its third year, the AIA Mentorship Program continues to grow. We are elated to hear so many success stories this year of our emerging professionals building confidence in the workplace, mapping a tangible path to licensure, and achieving milestones in their careers. We encourage all Associates and Young Architects to sign up! Browse available mentors, and sign up by visiting AIA Cleveland’s website at aiacleveland.com/mentor. New Member Open House In November we held our third New Member Open House at the offices of Bialosky Cleveland. This free open house provided a meet and greet opportunity for new members and the Executive Board. New members learned about all of the different opportunities for involvement in the chapter.

Thanks to help from local experts in the architecture community, we were able to strengthen the knowledge of our members and better prepare them for these important tests. These sessions will continue in 2018 as the growth of our emerging professionals is important to our profession! Kent State Career Fair For the second year in a row, members from AIA Akron, AIA Cleveland, and AIA Eastern visited the AIAS Kent State Chapter and hosted students for a meet and greet with donuts and coffee. Over 100 new students signed up for the AIA list serve. We look forward to continue growing a strong relationship between AIA Cleveland and Kent State University. Firm Visits In 2019, AIA Cleveland had the opportunity to provide lunch and meet with Bialosky Cleveland, Bostwick Design, Moody Nolan, and Vocon. Attendees learned how AIA Cleveland advocates for our local architects, provides inspiration for great design, and creates networking and educational opportunities. Lunch and Learns Throughout 2019, AIA Cleveland hosted over a dozen Lunch and Learns at the AIA Cleveland Center for Architecture and Design. These lunch and learns provided an important resource to members in helping to meet the yearly required professional continuing education requirements for HSW credits. NEO College of Fellows The Northeast Ohio College of Fellows regularly brings together FAIA members from the Cleveland and Akron chapters. Luncheons this year have hosted special guests of honor, such as Julia Gamolina of Madame Architect, Larry Scarpa, and Steven Holl. Community Outreach Speakers on the Square This year the chapter organized the sixth Annual Speakers on the Square event: #SustainableCLE. Organized as a panel discussion, the event is a way for the chapter to engage with those outside of our profession on a shared interest through the lens of Cleveland. Nearly fifty teams from across greater Cleveland competed in the sand castle, beach volleyball, and cornhole tournament that raised almost $8,000 for the ACE Mentor Program scholarship fund. The fifthannual event was again delivered by Independence Excavating and presented with the generous assistance of Live Cleveland, Turner Construction, and Cleveland Metroparks. When all the sand had settled, four teams stood above the others and solicited 6,892 votes on an online voting conest! The Undercooked Corndogs defended their volleyball title, while David and James Reschke took home the first-ever cornhole crown. Event planners hope to build on the regional appeal of the event next summer and welcome teams from Akron, Pittsburgh, and Youngstown to Edgewater Beach. dreamARCHITECTURE A community outreach initiative developed for the chapter is celebrated as an art/architecture contest with curriculum goals and benefits. Our theme for the 2019/2020 school year is “dreamSCHOOL, by which students in grades K~9 will be given the opportunity to design their very own school. Our goal creatively introduces school children to the profession of architecture in a hands-on and thoughtful way, with AIA Cleveland developing and nurturing a professional partnership with the Shaker Heights School District. Project Pipeline Architecture Camp Project Pipeline Architecture Camp is a National Initiative established in 2006 by The National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA). Project Pipeline encourages students to think creatively about the spaces around them and given the opportunity to investigate how they can best influence those spaces. Advocacy Payment Assurance Legislation (PAL) The AIA Ohio Payment Assurance Taskforce wrote legislation, added allies, reviewed it with potential opposition (none were against it), and it was introduced as Senate Bill 136. At this printing, it awaits its second hearing in the Senate Government Oversight and Reform Committee. Once passed, this legislation will offer lien rights prior to construction for architects, landscape architects, engineers, and surveyors. Grassroots More than 600 AIA members participated in 474 meetings that covered 83 percent of the country’s congressional districts and 96 out of 100 Senate offices. Capitol Hill Day 2019 was the most ambitious lobby day in AIA’s recent history. AIA members from across the nation had meetings in over 80% of congressional districts, all but four US Senate offices, and met with representatives from three US Territories. In addition, Virtual Capitol Hill Day generated over 5,800 emails and tweets to members of Congress. As most of you know, the primary goals of our collective efforts were to reinforce our message related to energy policy and school safety, make a big splash on Capitol Hill, and to strengthen strong relationships with federal legislators. Because of your help and great work, it is clear that we accomplished these objectives. We are already hearing from congressional leaders who appreciated meeting with you. AIA State and Local Government Conference The State Government Network Annual Meeting hosted a variety of sessions, panels, and breakouts on emerging state and local legislative issues trending across the country and best practices on how to address them. The conference took place between July 17 to 19, 2019, in Providence, RI. Dave Robar moderated a panel discussion entitled, “Influencing from Within: Refashioning the City Architect in Local Government”. The goal of this effort is to re-envision roles and expand pathways for city architects to make a positive contribution within the structures of local government. The panel included Dave Robar, AIA, Bryce Sylvester, Director of Planning and Development for the City of Lakewood, Allison Hennie, Urban Designer for the City of Lakewood, and Ric Abramson, FAIA. This annual conference is a vital part of every chapter’s legislative efforts and gives us a voice and the tools we need to advocate for the profession. Day on the Hill, Columbus OH State advocacy leaders from all seven Ohio components descended upon the Ohio Statehouse on Tuesday, May 28 to discuss issues important to architects with our elected representatives. This effort was led by chapter member and 2019 AIA Ohio Advocacy Committee Chair Jodi van der Wiel, AIA. Jodi was joined by AIA Cleveland Executive Director Patty Lampert, 2019 AIA Cleveland Advocacy Committee Chair Wayne Mortensen, AIA and 2018 AIA Ohio Advocacy Committee Chair / SGN representative Christopher Toddy, AIA. Design Award Tours GSA’s First LEED Platinum Net Zero Energy Courthouse Attendees learned about net zero energy building design definitions and considerations for modernization or adaptive reuse of existing structures for high energy performance and indoor environmental quality. This session included a discussion on the integration of design-build procurement, building analysis, commissioning, and post-occupancy monitoring for projects seeking net zero energy certification. This included the interrelationship of indoor air quality and energy efficiency, as well as public access, historic preservation, and existing building codes. Forest City Headquarters In May, the team from Vocon led a tour of one of last year’s Design Award winners, Forest City Headquarters, located on 6 floors of the Key Tower Building. Led by Bob Porter and Lindsay Kovach, the tour addressed some of challenges they faced in designing a cohesive office for a company that desired to connect the diversity of experiences within the organization. As a bonus, the group had the opportunity to view 360 degrees of the Cleveland landscape from one of Cleveland’s iconic buildings. GBX Group Headquarters The first Design Awards tour of the year was held at the GBX Group offices, located in Mid-Town Cleveland. Dean Spong and Scott Rodenbaugh from Vocon led the group through the former garment factory building, describing the design challenges they faced in restoring a historic timber-framed building. Intrigued by the history and complexity of the original 1913 building, the tour group came with many questions for the designers. The lessons on building codes and structural challenges were valuable take ways from this event.

Hard Hat Tours Lumen Located just behind the AIA Cleveland Office in Playhouse Square, AIA members and a variety of community members were thrilled to climb up the iconic 34 story modern glass skyscraper billed as the tallest tower in the Cleveland skyline in 40 years. Lead by Scott Bindel of Gilbane Construction, the tour featured several unique construction techniques and design solutions being employed for the first time in Cleveland. The initial tour up to the 12th floor in the spring was so popular that it led to two additional tours in the fall up to floor 29 and nearly to the top at floor 32. Key Tower and Marriott AIA Cleveland hosted a tour of one of Cleveland’s most iconic skyscrapers, Key Tower, which is undergoing a significant and high-profile renovation. Attendees learned how a new finish surface, a shallow structural system and a complex storm water management system was installed over a shallow foundation of gravel and sand that spans over a portion of the Key Center basement and the parking garage below, without penetrating the existing continuous waterproofing membrane. DERU Landscape Architecture discussed the design of the plaza, incorporating the key environmental, safety, and aesthetic factors into the ultimate design solution. Terminal Tower AIA members and friends had the opportunity to tour the residential interior renovation of an iconic Cleveland tower. Matthew Onslow and the construction team from Cleveland Construction led the tour and explained the complexities of building inside a historic structure. They even got bonus tour of the Terminal Tower Observation Deck! Rocket Mortgage Field House In February, we had the opportunity to take a rare behind-the-scenes construction tour of the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse renovation (formerly Quicken Loans Arena). Led by the Construction Management team of Whiting Turner, the group was able to learn about the challenges of running a construction site for a building that is still fully operational during concerts and games. Attendees even had a rare glimpse inside the Cleveland Cavaliers locker rooms and exercise facilities.

Bruce Bondy Drawing Workshop Returning for the third time in five years to Cleveland, Award-winning Architectural Illustrator Bruce Bondy brought his specialized training back in the form of an afternoon workshop for freehand drawing and visualization skills. The group got a refresher on basics of perspective, learning to simply forms, shade and shadow and introductions to quick design and sketch drawing techniques. Tri-C Fabrication Lab Tri-C has developed a state of the art 2,400 sf Fabrication Lab – the hightech Ideation Station. Alethea Ganaway of Tri-C offered this behind the scenes tour of the Lab and offered valuable lessons in preparing digital files for 3-D fabrication. Guests were able to view laser cutters, CNC machines, and 3D printers – all of which can be accessed by the design community as a resource for small, personal projects. Steven Holl Following his lecture at Kent State University, Steven Holl joined AIA Cleveland members for cocktails at his exhibit opening at 1point618 Gallery. The exhibition featured drawings, models, and photographs of not only his work, but also focused on Astra Zarina and Balthazar Korab. Attendees had the opportunity to enjoy candid, colorful chats with Steven Holl himself. An Architect’s Guide: Collaborating with Your Mechanical Engineer DLR Group opened up their offices and offered their unique perspective on integrated design with a lecture by former Professor Peter Marks, AIA and some of DLR’s Engineers. The lecture was set up primarily as an introduction for Architects to better understand the challenges and opportunities of our designs from a Mechanical Engineers perspective, but rolled into a robust dialog on how Architects and Engineers can work better together through all phases of design and construction.
