2020 PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS All proceeds from the 2020 AIA Cleveland Virtual Design Awards will benefit each of our three partner organizations.
ACE Mentor Cleveland
For more information visit: www.acementor.org/affiliates/ohio/cleveland.com
The ACE Mentor Program was founded in 1995 as an innovative way of attracting students, particularly minorities, women, and low-income populations into careers in the integrated construction industry including architecture, construction, and engineering. ACE Mentor is a not-for-profit, industry-created organization based in Washington, DC with a local affiliate operating in Cleveland, Ohio. ACE Mentor’s mission is to inform high school students about career opportunities in architecture, construction, and engineering; encourage students to pursue secondary and post-secondary education that will prepare them for careers in the integrated construction industry; and support the development of basic technical skills through mentor relationships.
Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless The mission of neoch is to organize and empower homeless and at-risk men, women and children to break the cycle of poverty through public education, advocacy and the creation of nurturing environments.
For more information visit: www.neoch.org
NEOCH has developed its vision by actively listening to, mobilizing, and working with those currently experiencing homelessness. We envision a society without homelessness. We know reaching this goal begins with pushing society, particularly service providers and the government, to treat people experiencing homelessness with dignity and respect. People experiencing homelessness need better shelter standards, more county support, more accessible housing, and – most importantly– more chances to have their input heeded.
NOMA Cleveland The National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) mission is to champion diversity within the design professions by promoting the excellence, community engagement, and professional development of its members.
For more information visit: www.nomacle.com

Our organization seeks to impact all aspects of the profession through community outreach, greater awareness, action planning and involvement with out cities existing collaborative design community. We ultimately aspire to achieve our goals through initiatives and programs.

GET TO KNOW THEM
DESIGN AWARDS JURY CHAIRS Anne Marie Duvall Decker, FAIA | Duvall Decker Anne Marie Duvall and Roy Decker formed Duvall Decker to foster Public Good in and beyond the lot lines of each project. As an amateur pianist and composer, Anne Marie sees architecture as instrument; allowing the transcendent to resonate among the conditions of our physical environment. As an amateur painter and teacher, Roy sees architecture as didactic; making hopeful critical propositions about the growth of our culture. Together, these perspectives have formed an engaging and critical conversation about why we practice architecture that is alive in the studio and work every day. Anne Marie is most comfortable putting buildings and documents together with everyone in the studio, finding ways to be efficient and make time for design quality and joy in the work. She also is a recognized leader to the advancement of the profession; teaching, lecturing, writing, serving on design juries, and serving the American Institute of Architects in various capacities at the state and national level.
Roy T. Decker, FAIA | Duvall Decker Roy and Anne Marie Duvall Decker formed Duvall Decker to foster Public Good in and beyond the lot lines of each project. Throughout his career, Roy has been a teacher, community leader, and practitioner. He regularly gives presentations and lectures on the firm’s design and planning work and is regarded as a multidisciplinary contributor to advancing issues such as public housing, community planning, and design.
DESIGN AWARDS JURY (CONT.) Carol Ross Barney, FAIA, Hon. ASLA | Ross Barney Architects Carol Ross Barney has been in the vanguard of civic design since founding Ross Barney Architects in 1981. With a career that spans over 40 years, Carol has made significant contributions to the built environment, the profession, and architectural education. As an architect, urbanist, mentor, and educator, she has relentlessly advocated that excellent design is a right, not a privilege. Her body of work, being almost exclusively in the public realm, represents this ethos and occupies a unique place within the panorama of contemporary architecture. A native Chicagoan, Carol is the mother of three sons and grandmother of Kai and Han.
Adam Ruffin | ArchitectureFirm Adam Ruffin studied architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Virginia, receiving a Master of Architecture in 2002. For 15 years he worked with Thomas Phifer and Partners in New York City rising to the role of Associate Director. As one of the longest tenured members of that team, he managed and developed some of the firm’s most important cultural and residential projects, including the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, North Carolina, the Cine Colombia Headquarters in Bogota, Colombia, the Chelsea Arts Studio in New York City, the Dallas Residence and Gallery in Dallas, Texas, the Fishers Island House on Fishers Island, New York, the United States Courthouse in Salt Lake City, Utah, and a Federal Office Building in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Many of these projects garnered AIA National Honor and Merit Awards as well as international recognition for the office. Adam joined ARCHITECTUREFIRM in 2017 and manages the Brooklyn office. Adam is a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board at the University of Virginia School of Architecture and he is a licensed architect in the state of New York, the state of Georgia, and Washington, DC.
DESIGN AWARDS PHOTOGRAPHY JURY CHAIR Matthew Carbone | Matthew Carbone Photography Matthew has a sharp eye for form, visual rhythm, and perspective. From the grand scale of a city or landscape to the precision and nuance of a detail, his photographs express that buildings are more than the sum of their parts, and that they are designed, first and foremost, to serve people. Each frame is a consideration of these values. Based in New York City, he travels to photograph architectural projects around the United States and the world. Passionate about the built environment, Matthew worked for the American Institute of Architects in Columbus and set up his own photography studio in 2008. Matthew works for corporate, editorial, advertising, and architectural clients. With his camera as his voice, he obverses, processes, and interprets both the design and function of his projects. Beginning with a process of research, preparation, and collaboration, he has created a methodology that while systematic, it is inherently designed to allow time for discovery. It is during this time that unique moments and unseen qualities often shine through. In collaboration with his clients’ designs, Matthew’s work has won numerous design awards and recognition. His photography, together with The Cultural Landscape Foundation’s “The Landscape Architecture Legacy of Dan Kiley,” was recently featured at the National Building Museum, AIA NY Center for Architecture, and continues as a traveling exhibit.
