A Letter From the President

2018 was an outstanding year for AIA Cleveland! One where we experienced continued growth and opportunity with our numerous events and community outreach efforts. This year also saw many initiatives, including Membership, Education and Public Awareness, come to fruition. This led to an even better chapter presence for our current members and an enticing motivation for our future members. This year AIA Cleveland was able to build upon our tremendous previous year’s success by increasing membership to an all-time high of 540. The increase of membership arises from our continued engagement with our fellow members and in our community. It is my belief that our focus to increase awareness of EDI (Equity, Diversity and Inclusion), beyond WIA+, by making a conscious effort to include it at every event, meeting, and function, allowed us to reach more individuals and show that AIA Cleveland will be a leader in this national movement. Our members look to us for help in all stages of their career; as associate members looking to pass the ARE, registered architects needing quality continuing education sessions or experienced members of firms that are facing industry wide subjects like technology changes, demographic shift or succession planning. For some members, the AIA CLE Young Architects/Associate Members (YAAM) group continues to host ARE review sessions and provide study material for those working toward registration. For those maintaining registration, the Lunch and Learn program provides superior continuing education credits and our Makers Series events are insightful to the process and nuances that local artists bring to their work. In addition, for firm leaders, this year we launched the Firm Roundtable discussions. These meetings were meant to help local firms navigate issues

facing our industry by discussing possible solutions to current topics. 2018 was also a year to increase Public Awareness of both AIA Cleveland and architecture in general. Several community outreach events facilitated our goal to promote the value of design and the role of architects to the public, these included the always anticipated Beach Day at Edgewater and the E. 131st Charrette/trolley tour. In order to increase the awareness of AIA Cleveland’s benefit, we have broadened our support and partnership with our Peer Organizations like NOMA, CUDC, KSU, and CIA to name a few. As we come to the end of 2018, I would like to thank not only the AIA Cleveland Executive Board for their invaluable contributions and time, but also, all AIA Cleveland members for making this year a memorable and progressive year for AIA Cleveland. I look forward to the additional great work that not only next year’s president and board will bring, but that of those of whom will follow in their footsteps. Very Truly Yours,

Allan Renzi. aia 2018 President AIA Cleveland

Interaction with Peers You build your career through relationships—AIA provides that network.

Joint Association Mixers Over the past year, hundreds of professionals from all fields pertaining to architecture, construction and design gathered together for our monthly Design JAMs (Joint Association Mixer). Thanks to an outpouring of sponsor support, both food and drink were provided at several of the happy hours. Locations ranged from local cocktail bars and newly established breweries, to sponsor showrooms. Thanks to our members and sponsors for making this year an immense success! Dragon Boat Happy Hour This summer we held the second annual Dragon Boat Happy Hour. Organized by our Young Architects and Associate Member Committee, a group of members set out on a paddling excursion down the Cuyahoga River on a Friday evening. Afterward, members remained for a happy hour at Merwins Wharf and enjoyed summer down on the river. Goodtime for Design Cruise This year’s annual “Goodtime for Design” boat cruise signaled the beginning of summer bringing together several Cleveland area design organizations for an evening of networking and fun. On board the privately chartered Goodtime III cruise ship, 400+ guests were treated to pizza, drinks, raffle prizes, and a 50/50 raffle benefiting the American Planning Association Scholarship fund. A photo booth, complete with props, gave guests the opportunity to take their memories home with them. Thanks to generous sponsor support, the evening continued at Terrestrial Brewing Company, where drinks and light appetizers were provided. The Goodtime Cruise has its sights set on 2019 where it will be celebrating its tenth year of existence! AIA/IIDA Annual Golf Outing It was our 23rd year and another successful year for the AIA IIDA Annual Golf Outing. This event is a joint event between AIA Cleveland Chapter and IIDA Ohio Kentucky Chapter and never disappoints. The event was held on Friday, August 10th at Sweetbriar Golf Club in Avon Lake, Ohio. This year’s theme was the German Oktoberfest and many of our participants donned their lederhosen and dirndl dresses. Golfing was enjoyed by over 120 golfers on a beautiful summer day. After making their divots, attendees enjoyed a buffet style dinner outside where donated items were available to be won during the Chinese raffle.

AIA Cleveland Trivia Challenge This past spring AIA Cleveland held its inaugural Trivia Challenge, pitting teams of design professionals against each other in a match-up of intellect. The first installment of this newly created annual event consisted of ten teams, each formed from a maximum of six players. The epic showdown of brainpower was held in the upstairs private event room at XYZ Tavern where food and beverage where provided to all players. This intimate setting provided the perfect backdrop for trivia questions ranging from pop culture to AIA Cleveland chapter history. In the end, there could only be one Champion who can now lay claim as the “Smartest Design Firm in Cleveland.” The top three teams were: Grand Champion: Fabo Architecture Runner-Up: Perspectus | DLR Group | HSB | and K2M Design Third Place: Richard L. Bowen + Associates Firm Visits Each year the board of AIA Cleveland maintains direct communication with its members by visiting their workplace. In 2018, AIA Cleveland had the opportunity to provide lunch and meet with Studio Techne, K2M Design, and Then Design. These visits allow the board to listen to the concerns and questions of our members, while informing our membership of the current direction and objectives of AIA Cleveland. Members who attend our firm visits learn firsthand how AIA Cleveland advocates for our local architects, provides inspiration for great design, creates networking opportunities and offers educational resources to promote our members as community leaders. Contact your director of membership if you are interested in scheduling a firm visit in 2019. Annual Meeting & Tatiana Bilbao Exhibit This year’s annual meeting was a unique opportunity for AIA Cleveland to partner with both AIA Ohio and KSU CAED. Held at 1point618 Gallery in October, and combined with the Tatiana Bilbao exhibit, our annual meeting was not only a chance to finalize Chapter topics, but an occasion for AIA Ohio to recognize newly licensed architects. We honored 20 newly licensed architects, and were joined by Kate Brunswick, CAE, Hon. AIA, and Bruce Sekanick, FAIA, to recognize these professionals. Ivan Bernal, Architecture Program Director, also welcomed the KSU CAED students. Over 75 members and KSU students enjoyed the reception, meeting Tatiana and opening of the exhibit.

To Further the Profession As a unified body, we create greater visibility for the profession

Membership and Participation AIA Cleveland is working to create an engaged and connected local professional design community through a focus of communicating membership value, general and personal invitations to participate, promoting member participation in existing or new committees, and meeting with firms during firm visits to re-connect professionally. Through quality programming and good fellowship, local architects are attracted, or re-attracted, to AIA membership. In 2018, we grew our membership to 540 members which is now at an all-time high. Membership Breakfast This February saw the 2018 Membership Breakfast with over 75 AIA Cleveland Members attending the event at the Oswald Building. This year’s meeting included a chapter look ahead from President Allan Renzi, AIA; along with a panel discussion featuring AIA Cleveland members on how they use AIA to enrich their designs, practices and local communities. It was also a great opportunity for members to discuss the current state of AIA Cleveland and to learn what is on the horizon for 2018! Mentorship This year the Young Architects and Associate Member committee took on the task of revamping and expanding the chapters’ mentorship program. Now the AIA Cleveland Connect Mentorship Program kicked off with a mentorship mixer, the first of a bi-annual event at Vocon. This program brought together an expanded group of professionals of at all career stages, with the goal of strengthening the profession in Cleveland. Browse available mentors, and sign up by visiting AIA Cleveland’s website at aiacleveland.com/mentor. New Member Open House In November we held our second New Member Open House at the offices of Vocon. This free open house provided a meet and greet opportunity for new members and the Executive Board. New members learned about all of the different opportunities for involvement in the chapter.

19

ARE Study Sessions This year the Young Architects and Associate Member committee coordinated four ARE study sessions covering various topics of the exams. Thanks to the help from local experts in the architecture community, we were able to strengthen the knowledge of our members and better prepare them for these tests. Additionally we had our first ARE Demystification Session, in order to kick off the year with general testing information to make the test less overwhelming. Kent State Career Fair In February, several AIA Cleveland members attended the annual Kent State University Career Fair on behalf of the Chapter. This event provided an important interface between students, recent graduates, and professionals. The benefits of AIA membership were shared with students in attendance. In October, members from AIA Akron, AIA Cleveland, and AIA Eastern visited the AIAS Kent State Chapter and supported them hosting a meet and great for the College of Architecture and Environmental Design. Donuts and coffee were provided for students interested in learning more about AIAS and becoming AIA members. These are just a few examples of the improved relations between the AIA Cleveland Chapter and Kent State University. A relationship that we look forward to continuing to grow in future years! Lunch and Learns Throughout 2018, AIA Cleveland hosted over a dozen Lunch and Learns at the AIA Cleveland Center for Architecture and Design. These lunch and learns provided an important resource to members in helping to meet the required continuing education requirements. NEO College of Fellows The Northeast Ohio College of Fellows is a group of all FAIA members located in Northeast Ohio who come together to meet on a quarterly basis. This group aims to identify and to mentor younger professionals within the region who are looking to pursue Fellowship within the AIA.

Public Outreach Advisory Committee (POAC) The POAC is responsible for managing and facilitating the chapter’s efforts to reach out to the broader public, including the identification of event participation and sponsorship opportunities, establishing partnership between the chapter and affiliated groups, and the preparation of public policies and positions for Board consideration. 2018 accomplishments included the creation of the AIA Cleveland Public Policy Directory and the seven initial policies that populate it. These local policies will help the chapter to better advocate for architects and communities by more clearly asserting where we stand as professionals committed to a thriving built environment. The POAC meets on a bi-monthly basis. Hip Hop Architecture Camp The Hip Hop Architecture Camp is a one-week intensive, challenging youth to explore the cultural implications of architecture in the built environment through the lens of Hip Hop Culture. Focusing on the intersection of theory and practice, participants explore hip hop as a revolutionary approach to understanding, conceiving, and generating architecture for a just city. Each camp includes a rap battle by followed by the production of an official track and music video. The winners of the rap battle at each location receive Beats by Dre Headphones. Each location includes a (w)rap battle where students design building facades in Autodesk Tinkercad and the winners at each site receive a Google Chrome book.

+ AIA Cleveland

WIA+ aspires to educate, advocate, and empower on matters of: 1. Gender equity in our profession. 2. Visibility and influence of women architects and designers. 3. Leadership and mentorship of all members. As part of WIA+’s mission, we provided engaging programming in 2018 to educate and empower our members.

WIA+ Against the backdrop of a second National Women’s March, the #MeToo movement, the Voices of Women flash mob at the Venice Architecture Biennale, and many other displays of the steps taken towards gender equity and reminders of the strides that still need to be made, AIA Cleveland’s Women in Architecture committee re-examined its purpose this year. Reasserting our focus on gender equity and acknowledging that there are many facets to equity, we evolved into WIA+ NeXXtReads In August a diverse groups of 30+ architects and design professionals gathered at the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC) to discuss Pay Equity as part of the WIA+ Committee’s NeXXt Read series. The open discussion, led by Jeff Meyers, AIA, and Malaz Elgemiabby, Assoc. AIA, touched upon many aspects of pay equity in the architectural profession including the current pay inequities between gender as well as race and ethnicity. The annual AIA Compensation Report was presented as a foundation for salary negotiations, and firm leaders in attendance asserted that regular salary negotiation is a normative and expected aspect of annual employee reviews. The presenters emphasized that both firm leaders and employees bear responsibility to work towards pay equity. In addition to firm leaders’ being open to pay equity discussions and monitoring their firms’ payrolls, employees should enter into yearly reviews prepared to discuss their salary with concrete examples of their professional growth that supports an increase. Women in Architecture Celebration The annual Women in Architecture Celebration in March increases awareness of and recognizes women’s contributions to architecture and allied professions. Our 2018 WIA Celebration “An Evening with Kate: Achieving and Equitable and Inclusive Profession” featured Kate Schwennsen, FAIA, Director of the School of Architecture at Clemson University, and a recognized expert on issues of design leadership and diversity, in conversation with Rick Jackson, the awardwinning senior host and producer of Ideas on WVIZ/WCPN Ideastream. This exhilarating evening with Kate explored how architecture is actively seeking and sustaining the participation of people with different places of origin, points of view, and ways of knowing, and exemplified how minimizing barriers can keep architecture relevant, enrich design, provide meaningful engagement, and build stronger connections with our local, regional, and global communities. WIA+ will continue the momentum of 2018 into the upcoming year with aspirational and energizing events, and we look forward to seeing you there!

Hard Hat and Design Award Tours

Twinsburg Gleneagles Clubhouse Tour AIA Akron and AIA Cleveland took a tour of the newly completed Gleneagles Clubhouse in Twinsburg. This exciting project opened this August. The new $7 million, 20,000 sf clubhouse facility features breathtaking golf course views, a golf pro-shop, restaurant/bar, and a banquet hall for 250 people. Indoor storage for 80 electric golf carts is contained within the building footprint in the basement level. Gleneagles is a public course and this new clubhouse is the final phase of a multi-year improvement plan for the course by the City of Twinsburg. Centric Tour David Craun, AIA of Bialosky Cleveland and Bill Davis of Panzica led the hard hat tour of Centric, the new mixed-use, transit-oriented development in the heart of University Circle. Showing various stages of completion, our tour group learned about its unique hybrid structure: a system with five levels of wood framing over two levels of post-tension concrete podium. After the tour, our group of about 20 convened at ABC the Tavern to enjoy the summer day. The Athlon Tour In September, AIA Cleveland toured “The Athlon”, a rehabilitation of the former Cleveland Athletic Club Building into 160+ apartments. Sandvick Architects, J&S Management, and Precision led our tour and discussed the historic tax credit project, the significant architectural features of the building, and pointed out the various exposed stages of construction. After the tour, our group of about 15 convened at The Clevelander to reflect on the tour and enjoy refreshments. Design Awards Tour: Dealer Tire Our first tour of the year was at the recent design awards winner, Dealer Tire Headquarters, which occupies 165,000 sf of the historic Victory Center Building in Midtown. Led by vocon’s Bob Porter, the tour explored the creative spaces and branding execution of this design excellence project. A bonus: our group also viewed Dealer Tire’s impressive museum-quality art collection, which is carefully integrated across the site.

Summer Lecture Series & Events

Tremco Green Roof Tour AIA Cleveland could not have wished for more pleasant weather for the green roof tour at Tremco’s Beachwood facility. Nearly 30 professionals and students discussed the cost savings, environmental impacts, and aesthetic benefits that come with installing green roofs on various project types. Our group explored the diverse rooftop landscape, and learned more about specific methods and materials, installation, and plant species. The tour ended with an unbeatable Cleveland sunset! Summer Lecture Series Each year, our Summer Lecture Series focuses on local practitioners who are moving the needle in our profession. This year, a theme emerged of research-focused designers whose findings and innovations have influenced how we think about architecture, engineering, and construction. The series took place in Great Lakes Brewing Company’s new taproom, and featured Chris Maurer, Shariq Ali, and Diane Davis-Sikora . The series would not have been possible without the generous support of Dan Binford and Associates (Series Sponsor), Jacco / Samsung (Event Sponsor) and Great Lakes Brewing Company (Charitable Donation). Tatiana Bilbao Exhibit The House and the City: Two Collages exhibit explored different projects at the urban scale, analyzed how complex cultural, historical, and economic dimensions were activated simply by acknowledging and responding to context. In the domestic domain, it will explored the home as the basic unit of human space. Her work has been recognized internationally with awards such as the Kunstpreis Berlin in 2012, and the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture in 2014. BIG Time Documentary In February, AIA Cleveland, in collaboration with Kent State University, brought the documentary BIG Time (2017) to the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. BIG Time follows Danish “starchitect” Bjarke Ingles in his formative years. It was a one-night viewing event followed by a brief panel discussion.

Makers Tours

Rustbelt Reclamation In April, Rustbelt Reclamation opened up their impressive facility, located within a massive historic warehouse in Tyler Village, to AIA Cleveland for a behind the scenes look at their craft and process. Our tour investigated their superior quality furniture and installations, all of which the primary material was reclaimed wood sourced and upcycled in the United States for a global market. We covered wood species, production, and environmental impacts. 44 Steel In May, AIA Cleveland returned to 44 Steel for an “encore” tour of Jason Radcliffe’s stunning facility in Avon. A dozen of us visited to see Jason’s latest creations that harbor the beauty of the Rust-Belt and the industrial revolution. We discussed the journey of Ohio-sourced raw/discarded steel and aluminum to become iconic repurposed furniture. Equipped with a band saw, grinder and gas welder, Jason demonstrated techniques and equipment used to achieve his final designs. Halper Lighting & Beacon Metals Over a dozen designers visited the shared studios of Halper Lighting Solutions and Beacon Metal Fabricators last September. Their Midtown facilities showcased many fascinating completed and in-progress works, including the massive “Light Tornado” for Tri-C’s Campus Center. Bob Halper and Bob Grobelsek led the discussion, and even demonstrated equipment for custom sheet metal designs. Rooswork & 3 Barn Doors In October, AIA Cleveland visited 3 Barn Doors and Rooswork studio, a co-joined boutique custom fabrication studio. Aaron Cunningham of 3 Barn Doors opened up his new event space and showroom of unique live-edge slab tables. Tim Roos shared his focus on traditional woodworking paired with computer-aided construction techniques and his commitment to craftsmanship and geometry in every piece. Nearly 20 designers toured the space, and learned a variety of custom fabrication techniques with wood, rubber, and steel.
