KANSAS CITY DESIGN EXCELLENCE

2021 1

aiakc.org

As we welcomed 2021, many of us did so with hope. Hope that we were nearing the end of the global pandemic, hope that we could soon regain some normalcy, and hope that we could leave 2020 far behind. As we near the end of 2021, there are still reservations about the unknowns ahead, and we have seen incredible resilience and inspiration from some unlikely places. The initiative and resourcefulness that we have witnessed all around our AIA Kansas City chapter guided our selection of this year’s theme: “Be Inspired.” While we continue to navigate daily and long-term hardships, a few questions come to mind. Where do you find inspiration? How can we discover new motivations for not only ourselves, but also our industry? How do you shake up an old routine? What encourages you to keep moving forward? Where do you find joy? What challenges you to be a better version of yourself? How do you continue feeling energized and rejuvenated? This year and last have forced us to self-reflect and ask many of these questions. We have attempted to be bold in the uncertainty, while trying to solve many of the world’s current challenges. With our diverse and accomplished design community, we can remain part of the solution by inspiring others, sharing our talents, and being a positive voice for change. AIA Kansas City’s Design Excellence Awards program is our annual opportunity to honor great architecture and design in our community. The Design Excellence Awards committee evaluated several options for this year’s program to provide a safe approach in recognizing our great projects and talented peers. Our primary intent was to make this a true CELEBRATION. A celebration of being together, of the amazing design achievements in our community, and of all that inspires us on a daily basis. While many things have changed in the last two years, the Design Excellence Awards program maintains the fundamental benchmarks to ensure recognition is inclusive and emphasizes the diversity and innovation advancement in Kansas City. Sustainability continues to be a focal point within our submission requirements, and we are thrilled with the thoughtful and impactful ways this principle has been incorporated in so many designs. To ensure all project types are highlighted in a meaningful way, the award categories are arranged by scale. Architecture submissions were judged against others with similar opportunities and constraints in five scale-related categories: Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large. In addition, categories for Interior Architecture, Concept Design, and Divine Detail provided an opportunity to highlight the depth and diversity of design talent across a variety of scales and project types. With the large number of submissions and positive feedback received from our AIA Kansas City chapter, the Design Excellence Awards Committee would like to thank everyone for their support of this year’s program. We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to our committee for their time, creativity, and determination to make this celebration a success.

JJ U UR RO OR R SS SCOTT ERDY, FAIA

Scott has more than twenty-five years experience in the profession and his work has been recognized by the American Institute of Architects for excellence in design, earning more than 20 AIA local, regional and national design awards and has been recognized nationally in architectural publications, gallery exhibits and the national press. More importantly, his work is recognized by clients and colleagues alike for its formal expression of site conditions and functional programmatic requirements in a way that would not have been considered in the early project stages. Clients feel comfortable with Scott’s ideas because of his use of computer modeling beginning in the early conceptual stages and his conversational approach to the design process. Scott maintains a deep passion and commitment to the profession and the community in which we live. Scott is active in the profession, formerly serving on the Urban Design Committee of the AIA and as an invited juror for annual design awards programs. Recognizing that improving the profession and our built environment cannot be achieved solely by participation in professional organizations, Scott seeks to instill a similar passion and commitment in his students, serving as an instructor at the University of Pennsylvania teaching graduate design studio. Following a long and diverse work history culminating as Design Director at The Hillier Group Philadelphia, the third largest architecture firm in the country, Scott formed Erdy McHenry Architecture with David McHenry, also a principal with Hillier, believing that their combination of skill and talent offered significant value to local and national clients who believe that quality and service know no compromise.

JEFF GOLDSTEIN, FAIA

Jeff Goldstein is a Principal and co-founding partner at DIGSAU, a 50-person studio practicing contemporary architecture, urbanism and environmental design. DIGSAU’s philosophy of practice is guided by a commitment to design excellence, social and environmental sustainability, and cultural resonance. Since 2007, the firm has built a reputation for socially engaged, innovative work that connects people to place, time, and each other. The firm has been recognized more than sixty National, Regional, State, and Local Design Awards from the American Institute of Architects. DIGSAU was named one of North America’s “Emerging Voices” by the Architectural League of New York and the AIA Pennsylvania Chapter honored DIGSAU as the fifth recipient of the prestigious Firm Award, granted annually to a selected Pennsylvania firm whose efforts have consistently produced distinguished architecture for a period of at least 10 years. Their work has been exhibited at Temple University, Delaware College of Art and Design, and the Broad Museum and they have won multiple international design competitions. Projects have been published in trade and popular media outlets including Architectural Record, Architect, The Architect’s Newspaper, Dwell, CNN, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and the New York Times. Much of Jeff’s work engages vulnerable communities that have historically been the last to benefit from quality design. His passion and humility energize his clients, colleagues, and collaborators, and empower community members to become active participants. He regularly lectures across the country, sharing the firm’s experience and work.

ZINAT YUSUFZAI

Zinat Yusufzai, AIA is a principal at KieranTimberlake in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she synthesizes complex environmental, technical, and aesthetic goals into cohesive and elegant spaces. Zinat joined the firm in 2002 after working for several years in international development and has worked on many of the firm’s award-winning projects. Zinat is currently working on a multiuse development project in downtown Richmond, Virginia that will help restore the urban fabric of downtown while bringing a suite of health hospitality, early childhood education, and retail services to the neighborhood. Previously, she worked on New York University’s 181 Mercer, a large, multi-purpose building that will centralize much of the university’s arts, academic, athletic, and residential programming. She also oversaw sustainability strategies for the US Embassy in London. Outside of project work, Zinat is a dedicated mentor within the firm, sharing her knowledge and experience widely. Zinat received a Bachelor of Arts in Religion at Oberlin College and a Master of Architecture from Virginia Tech.
