LETTER FROM THE CO-CHAIRS
2022 has yet again brought new and unprecedented challenges and changes to our industry. While some sense of normalcy has returned, new challenges have emerged. Inflation hit a 40-year high, supply chain issues due to the pandemic and war in Ukraine continue to greatly affect our industry. Despite all of this, we persevere and find new and exciting paths forward. The collective initiative and resourcefulness coming out of our AIA Kansas City chapter continues to progress and should be recognized.
It is time to celebrate! We celebrate our collective effort as an industry moving forward. We celebrate our community, our diversity, our city. We celebrate the challenge of competition that pushes us all to strive to do better work. We celebrate being a positive voice for change.
AIA Kansas City’s Design Excellence Awards program is our annual opportunity to honor great architecture and design in our community. The Design Excellence Awards committee evaluated several options for this year’s program to provide a safe approach in recognizing our great projects and talented peers. For the first time in 3 years, we are excited to return to a full celebration. A celebration of being together, of the amazing design achievements in our community, and of all that inspires us on a daily basis.
While many things have changed in the last two years, the Design Excellence Awards program still maintains the fundamental benchmarks to ensure recognition is inclusive and emphasizes the diversity and innovation advancement in Kansas City. Sustainability continues to be a focal point within our submission requirements, and we are thrilled with the thoughtful and impactful ways this principle has been incorporated in so many designs.
To ensure all project types are highlighted in a meaningful way, the award categories are arranged by scale. Architecture submissions were judged against others with similar opportunities and constraints in five scale-related categories: Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large. In addition, categories for Interior Architecture, Concept Design, and Divine Detail provided an opportunity to highlight the depth and diversity of design talent across a variety of scales and project types.
With the large number of submissions and positive feedback received from our AIA Kansas City chapter, the Design Excellence Awards Committee would like to thank everyone for their support of this year’s program. We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to our committee for their time, creativity, and determination to make this celebration a success.

MEET THE JURORS
JOHN SANDERS, FAIA FOUNDING PARTNER, SANDERS PACE ARCHITECTURE
John is a founding partner of Sanders Pace Architecture, created in 2002 primarily for focus on design opportunities within Knoxville’s Downtown Central Business District and its immediate surrounding neighborhoods. His passion for design can be seen on the challenging projects that he and his firm have been involved with in those areas. Along with his professional investment comes his personal redevelopment endeavors of several properties within the district that have been successfully completed, returning blighted or unusable properties back to vibrant reuses. His influence is evident in the thoughtful rehabilitation of forgotten, neglected buildings in fringe neighborhoods, elevation of overlooked project typologies, and energetic service through teaching and civic engagement. John’s work is meaningful, creative, and inspirational. John is an active member of the AIA and recently completed a term as chapter president. He has served and chaired on several chapter design award juries across the country. John has been an Adjunct Studio Professor at the University of Tennessee and continues to participate as an invited studio critic and juror for the College of Architecture and Design. John was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows in 2018 recognizing his body of work since 2002.

BARRY YOAKUM, FAIA PRINCIPAL, ARCHIMANIA
MEET THE JURORS
Barry is a modernist at heart and designs progressive projects with regional influences. He is copartner of archimania and strives to produce designs that spark architectural dialogue in a vastly traditional region.
As Principal-in-Charge of Vision and Collaboration, Barry promotes extraordinary architecture by leading the collaborative design process among client, project stakeholders, and design team. Through this process, Barry contributes to specific aspects of the physical design; he may develop the concept, execute a key detail, establish a form, frame a design position, or influence a critical part of the architecture.
He was elected to the College of Fellows American Institute of Architects for his contributions in design in 2010. He is also a Legacy LEED Accredited Professional, which recognizes him for his advanced depth of knowledge in green building practices. Barry is a recognized leader in the field of collaborative design, has invested more than 30 years in implementing sustainable design strategies, and produces progressive designs that encourage architectural advancement and dialogue to better the built environment.
His work has received more than 50 awards, including AIA regional, state, and local design awards, a NOVA Award, and a National Endowment for the Arts Citation.
